Abstract:
Concrete structures exposed to harsh environments, especially including bridges, harbor structures are often suffered from durability problems. Typical external signs include surface deterioration, cracking caused by for example sulphate attack, frost action or reinforcement corrosion. All are strongly linked to the porous microstructure of the binder matrix and chemical decomposition of certain phases. Full replacement of deteriorated concrete structures is costly and can be troublesome for their users. The increasing demand to reduce the carbon footprint and to prolong the service life of concrete structures adds yet another argument to restore the existing structures. One alternative is to use very dense Ultra-High-Performance concrete (UHPC) as an external protective coating. The goal of this study was to determine the interfacial bonding characteristics between a damaged normal concrete (NC) and the applied thin layer of the UHPC. To curb the CO2 emission, UHPC is produced by substituting 50 wt% of Portland cement with a fine limestone powder. Fresh and hardened properties, shrinkage and frost durability have been evaluated. Mechanical properties were determined on a full-scale hybrid element using ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and bond test (pull-off test). The results showed a significant increase of mechanical properties. Despite the applied thin layer of UHPC and volumetric restrain from the substrate normal concrete (NC) only limited surface shrinkage cracks were observed. The bond test and UPV showed good excellent values.

Abstract:
Sustainability has to penetrate more and more into higher education. It should not focus only on traditional elements. It should also enter new, but for future improvement, extremely important areas. Based on this premise, creativity and motivation, when additionally interconnected and supported by trust that is provided and achieved, decide on the progress and sustainability of universities. This connection is gaining importance especially from the point of view of building solid foundations and mechanisms that functionally preserve the potential effects of these elements in the future. For this reason and following the nature, importance, and content of sustainable academic motivation (SAM), the paper introduces two new concepts: sustainable academic creativity (SAC) and sustainable academic trust (SAT). For further original contributions, the paper hypothesizes the existence of mutual—spiral—relations of sustainable academic motivation (SAM), sustainable academic creativity (SAC), and sustainable academic trust (SAT). The empirical section tests the validity of this claim in the universities of two countries: the Slovak Republic and Poland. A survey performed on a sample of n=181 pedagogical, scientific, management, and administrative staff in higher education confirms the existence of these spirals. The results indicate the spiral effect of motivation when connected with creativity and trust and show that it is accented by the crucial principles of sustainability (responsibility, novelty, usefulness, progress, etc.). Therefore, the paper’s conclusion contains the explanations for the potential occurrence of three types of sustainably mutual systems and complexes. These are: (a) individual sustainable systems of SAM, SAC, and SAT; (b) group/sectional sustainable systems of SAM, SAC, and SAT; and (c) the global sustainable complex of SAM, SAC, and SAT in the university.

Abstract:
This short paper makes the case that most impact assessment (IA) has sustainable development as the stated goal, but that it doesn't deliver sustainable outcomes. A key pillar of sustainable development is equity, both intra-generational (defined after Lamorgese and Geneletti (2013, p.119) as ensuring "equity of opportunity for everyone, particularly the poorest and most vulnerable members of the community and seek to create a good quality of life for everyone") and inter-generational equity (defined after Gibson et al. (2005, p. 235) as favouring "present options and actions that are most likely to preserve or enhance the opportunities and capabilities of future generations to live sustainably"). Notwithstanding the importance of intra-generational equity, this paper focuses on the problem that inter-generational equity presents to IA both because of the prevalence of short-term planning, and because approaches developed to deal with inherent uncertainty associated with impacts considered in the long term are overly resource intensive and therefore impractical. A research focus on IA processes that can deal with inter-generational impacts cost effectively might provide the basis on which to develop an IA tool that actually delivers on its stated goal and fits in with current decision-making norms.

Abstract:
Abstract The land is one of the determining factors for sustainable agriculture. However, attention to the protection of agricultural land in economic development has not fully sided with the interests of agricultural development in the long term. The conversion of agricultural land because of the growth of the industrial and service sectors has displaced agricultural land, making this a serious problem for the existence and sustainability of agriculture. This study aims to analyze the willingness of farmers to maintain sustainable food agricultural land (SFAL) in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. This study can contribute thoughts in the formulation of sustainable agricultural development policies. The survey was conducted on rice farmers at 25 observation points from eight irrigation source rivers spread across the Special Region of Yogyakarta. A total of 125 rice farmers were taken at simple random as the sample of this study. The determinants of farmers’ willingness were analyzed using binomial logistic regression. The results of the analysis show that education, the distance to irrigation sources, rural areas, farm income, and access to credit are factors that influence the willingness of farmers to maintain SFAL, especially rice plants. Therefore, it is important for farmers to maintain sustainable food fields through various programs such as extension, farming credit, production price incentives, and the provision of good irrigation facilities.

Abstract:
The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) offer specific guidelines for improving sustainable forest management, especially Goal 15. Goal 15 protects, restores and promotes the sustainable use of land ecosystems, manages forests sustainably, prevents was against desertification, stops and reverses land degradation and prevents biodiversity loss. The Civilian Control Zone (CCZ) south of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating North and South Korea has functioned as a unique biological preserve due to traditional restrictions on human use but is now increasingly threatened by deforestation and development. We used hot spot analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze spatial patterns of forest land use and land cover (LULC) change and variables influencing these changes, within the CCZ. Remote sensing imagery was used to develop land cover classification maps (2010 and 2016) and a GIS database was established for three change factors (topography, accessibility and socioeconomic characteristics). As a result of Hotspot analysis, Hotspots of change were distributed mainly due to agricultural activities and the development of forest and expansion of villages. Subsequent factor analysis revealed that accessibility had greater influence (−0.635) than the other factors. Among the direct factors, change to bare land had the greatest impact (−0.574) on forest change. These results shed light on forest change patterns and causes in the CCZ and provide practical data for efficient forest management in this area with regards to the SDGs.

Abstract:
At present, successful companies are those which, compared to their competitors, are concerned with aspects of sustainable development. Indeed, the practice of sustainable development is more or less used by PMEs to distinguish themselves and preserve their image. But the question is how do PMEs integrate themselves into the practice of sustainable development? Sustainable development could be considered as a new project for society, a new stage in the organisation of human activities, which requires cultural factors to be taken into account, because taking sustainable development into account is first and foremost a matter of culture before becoming an economic concern. Based on the hypothesis that the culture of sustainable development holds an important place in the integration of companies in the practice of sustainable development, the objective of this study is to analyse qualitatively, through the results of interviews with twenty Malagasy PMEs, the importance of the culture of sustainable development in the practice of sustainable development.

Sustainable development in Azerbaijan Abstract As the population increases, so does the demand for natural resources. However, natural resources are not inexhaustible, and in the near future some of them are likely to run out completely. people do not realize that natural resources can be exhausted during their lifetime, and only after they are exhausted, they face big problems. The ever-increasing demand of the world's population can result in the depletion of natural resources, economic crises, environmental tensions, and political and social problems. In order to prevent this from happening, each country should determine its own development strategy and explore ways to preserve resources for future generations. Experts see the way out of the current situation in ensuring sustainable development. The sustainable development model is a balanced, sustainable and dynamic development model. This model is considered a development that does not jeopardize the full satisfaction of the needs of future generations. It includes two main concepts: the concept of needs, especially the needs necessary for the existence of the poor population, which should be the subject of first-order priorities and the concept of limits placed on the ability of the environment to meet current and future needs, conditioned by the organization of society and the state of technologies. Abstract:
Cultural Tourism offers a strong motivation to preserve the elements of cultural heritage in tourist destinations. It helps to preserve cultural elements as important tourist attractions. Cultural tourism’s notion is unlimited to visiting monumental attractions only, but it has also become an interactive experience with the social fabric of the community through attending exhibitions, festivals and events, and the purchase of traditional local products. Thus, the human capital factor in tourism is linked to the quality of tourism products. With the growth of international tourism, the importance of sustainable tourism development has emerged to protect natural, cultural, and human resources, in addition to achieving economic development. As non-sustainable tourism development has led to the deterioration of tourism resources. This research paper examines if cultural tourism contributes to decrease tourism seasonality and achieve sustainable tourism development in cultural heritage sites. A case study of Aswan was selected. Aswan has unique and important elements of cultural heritage (Tangible and Intangible), but it still faces many problems like tourism seasonality, besides its tourism is still weak compared with other cities that have the same tourism potential. Based on a literature review and analytical study of global examples that achieved sustainability in cultural heritage sites, a field study of Aswan was conducted to evaluate the current status of cultural tourism, besides illustrating the challenges of achieving sustainability. The major result that has emerged from the study is paying attention to cultural tourism is the possible solution to the challenges that Aswan tourism faces. Finally, the paper concluded that investment in human capital creates opportunities for cultural tourism which in return resolves one of tourism’s major challenges: seasonality.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate historical environmental destruction and subsequent land use policies enacted over the last 400 years in the Adirondacks Park & Preserve – America's largest park and preserve in the lower 48 states. Design/methodology/approach – The paper includes a historical analysis using an extensive literature review. The historical analysis is divided into four distinct waves of time analyzing the specific environmental destruction and the policies enacted. They closely mimic century waves: 1700s, 1800s, 1900s, and the present 2000s. Findings – Findings indicate that each of the major policy or land use instruments applied to the Adirondack region were appropriate at the time, however, were retroactive approaches to stem widespread environmental devastation. These strong measures still impact the region today, impairing the 2.5 million ha and the ability to ensure a sustainable future of environmental protection, economic prosperity, and societal well-being. The conservation easement as a tool can proactively return the region to a sustainable balance. Originality/value – While there have been studies analyzing the historical importance and others highlighting the political uniqueness of the Adirondacks, this paper fills the gap in reframing the history and policies in a sustainable planning paradigm. Exposing retroactive responses when the environment was on the brink of destruction, the paper suggests a proactive approach using the conservation easement. Here, sustainability can be achieved through partnership between government, non-profit, and private business. This collaboration can build on one of the best regional planning models in the nation and ensure a balance between environment, economy, and society for more than one century wave.

Abstract:
Design education is practical and theoretical; however, it does not usually include the study of cultural heritage. Nonetheless, relations with academia have been strong since the 18th century, when the need to educate designers spread across the continent to improve design and make it competitive in the market. In this paper, we recover that spirit and act as mediators between heritage and young people to create links and preserve cultural heritage. A case study was conducted at the Public Valencian Design School with 31 product design students. The methodology applied was based on iterative processes that allowed students to discover design and silk heritage when they proposed innovative ways of approaching it. A qualitative survey was used to evaluate the case study. The results showed that students increased their appreciation for cultural heritage (by more than 90%) as well as their willingness to preserve it and reuse it in their future creations. Collaboration between cultural heritage and design might foster sustainable conservation and mark the future steps of ongoing collaboration.

One of them is the application in tourism of the basic principles of the concept of sustainable development, which meets the needs of today and does not endanger the needs of future generations. The sustainable development strategy focuses on realizing the two most important goals. First of all, efficient and rational use of resources and their potential, as well as the optimal solution to regional development issues. These two goals can be achieved through the development of ecological tourism, as it will be possible to preserve the unique beauty of natural areas, reduce anthropogenic pressure on the environment, improve the welfare of local people, and more. Ukraine has sufficient ecotourism resources, the use of which, along with the growing demand for tourism services, will naturally lead to the intensification of infrastructure development and territorial organization of ecotourism activities. The concept of ecotourism emphasizes the need to preserve natural and cultural heritage, and biodiversity and improve the ecological, social, and economic status of the regions visited by ecotourists. Ecological tourism should become a model for reorganization, and greening of the entire tourism industry. Sustainable ecologically balanced tourism should become not only a philosophy but also a leading management strategy for tourism development. In recent years, the sphere of tourism in Ukraine has been going through difficult times. The Covid-19 pandemic has become a challenge for the tourism industry, making domestic travel, including ecotourism, more prevalent in Ukraine. The next terrible event for Ukraine was the war. Several hundred crimes against the environment prohibited by the Geneva Convention as a result of Russian aggression have been recorded since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russian troops into the country. After our victory, in the conditions of growing needs of the population in recreation and tourism, extensive and intensive interaction of society and nature, there is a well-founded need for systematic use of natural resources through the use of appropriate mechanisms of sustainable nature, one of which is ecologically oriented tourism. aimed at implementing the conceptual foundations of sustainable development.

After the global developments that occurred, the most important of which is the spread of the Covid 19 pandemic, it was imperative to pay attention to outdoor spaces to preserve public health. There are important of studying the relationships between sustainable landscape design, the people, and the urban environment. The research problem revolves around a commitment to sustainable landscape design rules, which included variables in the sustainable natural space environment: environment, economy, justice, beauty, experience, and ethics. The research hypothesis is that there must be a system for the variables of sustainable spaces that determine relationships, opportunities, contradictions, and system parameters about people's health and safety, environmental services, biodiversity, and resource management. To achieve the above goals must be studied; compatibility with systems, the positive effects of globalization, the appropriate scale, and the interactive – behavioral, meaningful landscapes, the distinctive paradigm, using the alternative landscape and regenerated landscapes.

The policy of each state is aimed at preserving the life and health of people. Longevity of people depends on environmental and legal protection guaranteed and respected by the adopted normative legal acts of states, as well as interstate agreements. Sustainable development is based on three areas: environmental, economic, and social. In the case of accidents (industrial injuries, environmental emergencies, and etc.), non-observance and violation of the rights of people and employees of enterprises in the environmental sphere of activity is observed. Therefore, it became necessary to solve the problem in the direction of social and economic responsibility. The article authors have developed exceptional offers for implementation and maintenance of these areas, both in environmental law and in labor law (social protection). By applying and following these offers, we will try to preserve and protect the ecology of the world countries, thereby implementing social and labor protection of people.

AbstractThe transformation of agriculture according to an industrial model has had clear benefits in improving efficiency and lowering production costs, but also has had adverse consequences on rural culture and the environment. Sustainable agriculture offers alternative practices and values intended to promote environmental stewardship, conserve resources, preserve farm traditions, and support rural communities. Strong arguments can be made that it will have these consequences, based on the interactions among agricultural structure, rural community viability, and environmental quality. However, counterarguments can also be made, and the claimed benefits of sustainable agriculture for rural communities must be regarded as not yet demonstrated.

Abstract:
This article examines the legal category sustainable use of wildlife as a process of realization of rights and obligations by the subjects, based on the provisions of the Concept of Sustainable Development, International law and National legislation on wildlife. This process is aimed at ensuring biological diversity, achieving a balance of economic, environmental and social interests of the citizens, society and the state as a whole, the process, as well as to preserve the reproductive ability of the animal world. Based on the analysis of certain provisions of the legislation on wildlife and law enforcement practice, the author makes a conclusion that Russia lacks a complex system of legal support measures for the sustainable use of wildlife. Legal, economic, ideological, organizational measures, proposed by the author of the article will make it possible to use wildlife in such a way, that will preserve and increase the number of wildlife populations, maintain an ecological balance, and ensure the needs in favorable environment for life and health for the present and future generations. The measures proposed by the author can create the legal basis for sustainable management of wildlife. The author suggests, that these measures can be useful in developing national programs for sustainable use of wildlife; providing incentives for the transition to sustainable use; strengthening the dialogue between the authorities and the population in order to involve them into the process of sustainable use of wildlife, so that to ensure a balance of economic, environmental and social interests.

Abstract:
To inhibit the degradation of the forest reserves it is necessary to stimulate the consciousness and involvement of the surrounding communities. This work would be more effective with a program of ecological consciousness applied within an environment where people can learn by practicing. For this purpose, we envisage the creation of a Sustainable Building Program (SBP) to build ecological school-villages surrounding the forest reserves subjected to constant aggressions. This is the case of the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve whose vulnerability has increased due to Manaus urban expansion. As the worlds largest urban forest fragment, it demands protection of its borders. It is suggested to implement the SBP to build ecological school-villages as a protection belt to preserve the forest integrity and its natural water fountains. It may also attract eco tourism and serve as a prototype sustainable eco barrier. The school-villages shall shelter people enrolled in social residential programs who will learn by practicing environment education and green building techniques. Storage and selective collection of recyclables shall be emphasized. The organic residues generated by the village shall be used to feed biogas tanks to support the kitchen of the Community Center (CC). The CC shall host the theoretical classes. This program shall also shelter victims from natural disasters, families relocated from risky areas, and low-income families from the rural areas coming to the capital for health treatment by the state. The SBP envisage two-pavement villages comprised of green roof, and green materials such as bamboo, clay from site excavations, wood and bamboo residues, and hydrated lime of carburet. The villages shall comprise rain water catchment and utilization, ecological sewage treatment, and green roof supported by a structural bamboo ceiling. The structural bamboo shall be of the species Guadua angustifolia. The apartments shall comprise bamboo based modular wall panels. Wall panel structures, columns, and beams are prefabricated with bamboo-based structures and cemented with micro concrete. This way, the bamboo used as a non-conventional construction material shall substitute the wood partially, or totally, reducing the pressure on logging.

Abstract:
Soil degradation is one of the most topical environmental threats. A number of processes causing soil degradation, specifically erosion, compaction, salinization, pollution, and loss of both organic matter and soil biodiversity, are also strictly connected to agricultural activity and its intensification. The development and adoption of sustainable agronomic practices able to preserve and enhance the physical, chemical, and biological properties of soils and improve agroecosystem functions is a challenge for both scientists and farmers. This Special Issue collects 12 original contributions addressing the state of the art of sustainable agriculture and soil conservation. The papers cover a wide range of topics, including organic agriculture, soil amendment and soil organic carbon (SOC) management, the impact of SOC on soil water repellency, the effects of soil tillage on the quantity of SOC associated with several fractions of soil particles and depth, and SOC prediction, using visible and near-infrared spectra and multivariate modeling. Moreover, the effects of some soil contaminants (e.g., crude oil, tungsten, copper, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) are discussed or reviewed in light of the recent literature. The collection of the manuscripts presented in this Special Issue provides a relevant knowledge contribution for improving our understanding on sustainable agriculture and soil conservation, thus stimulating new views on this main topic.

Abstract:
The goal of my research is a sustainable development that is perfectly designed and defined as an idea, but in its implementation we encounter difficulties, depending on the demographic picture of the country, political organization, cultural differences, etc. However, in order for sustainable development to take place on the "right path" in all segments of our society, we need a strategy, but even if it were, the question arises: "In a world that relies on money as the main indicator of everything, Sustainable development or the natural resources that we need to leave to future generations have any chance of existence ? " In this sense, sustainable development is a harmonious relationship of environmental protection, economics and social development in order to preserve the resources of our planets for future growth. This is the general direction to create a better world for future generations by trying to balance the social, economic and environmental factors of the environment. The application of this concept varies depending on the branch in which the company is located, from the characteristics of the complete national environment in which the company operates. Because the economies of each country have emerged as a result of different historical and socio-economic factors, the institutional framework is different from country to country in the European Union.

AbstractObjectiveThe Balanced Menus Challenge (BMC) is a national effort to bring the healthiest, most sustainably produced meat available into health-care settings to preserve antibiotic effectiveness and promote good nutrition. The present study evaluated the outcomes of the BMC in the Maryland/Washington, DC region.DesignThe BMC is a cost-effective programme whereby participating hospitals reduce meat purchases by 20 % of their budget, then invest the savings into purchasing sustainably produced meat. A mixed-methods retrospective assessment was conducted to assess (i) utilization of the BMC ‘implementation toolkit’ and (ii) achievement of the 20 % reduction in meat purchases. Previous survey data were reviewed and semi-structured interviews were conducted.SettingHospitals located in the Maryland/Washington, DC region, USA, that adopted the BMC.SubjectsTwelve hospitals signed the BMC in the Maryland/Washington, DC region and six were available for interview.ResultsThree hospitals in the Maryland/Washington, DC region that signed the BMC tracked their progress and two achieved a reduction in meat procurement by ≥20 %. One hospital demonstrated that the final outcome goal of switching to a local and sustainable source for meat is possible to achieve, at least for a portion of the meal budget. The three hospitals that reduced meat purchases also received and used the highest number of BMC implementation tools. There was a positive correlation between receipt and usage of implementation tools (r=0·93, P=0·005).ConclusionsThe study demonstrates that hospitals in the Maryland/Washington, DC region that sign the BMC can increase the amount of sustainably produced meat purchased and served.

It is based on contributions of end-users as well as scientific and scholarly communities from across borders, languages, nations, continents, and disciplines. It consists in collecting knowledge about all worldwide translations of one original work and sharing that data through a digital and interactive global knowledge map. Collected translations are processed in order to build multilingual parallel corpora for a large number of under-resourced languages as well as to highlight the transnational circulation of knowledge. Building such corpora is vital in preserving and expanding linguistic and traditional diversity. Our first experiment was conducted on the world-famous and well-traveled American novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by the American author Mark Twain. This paper reports on 10 parallel corpora that are now sentence-aligned pairs of English with Basque (an European under-resourced language), Bulgarian, Dutch, Finnish, German, Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Ukrainian, processed out of 30 collected translations.

Abstract:
The durability of reinforced concrete strongly depends on the environment in which it is located; in any case, the concrete and the reinforcing bars it contains are constantly subject to slow deterioration processes. The protection of concrete structures is, therefore, essential to increase their service life, reducing the costs for their repair and maintenance. The commercial widely used coatings are mainly based on petroleum derivatives (i.e., resins, solvents): increased sensitivity and attention to human health and the protection of the environment pressed research to find alternatives to synthetic products, identifying safer materials with a low environmental impact to employ as protective coatings. In this review, new sustainable products already used or potentially suitable to act as protective treatments for concrete were analyzed and presented. These are natural (bio-based) or waste materials, in which the use of synthetic resins and hazardous solvents, for humans and the environment, are minimized, exploiting waste materials or by-products of other processes, if possible. The main properties and characteristics of these new products are illustrated, highlighting the potential advantages over commercial products also in terms of performance.

Abstract:
Road infrastructure in appropriate conditions is a requirement for the development of any country. The formulation of policies oriented to preserve road networks responds to political, socio-economic, and environmental interests. Through a hybrid methodology that integrates system dynamics (SD) and analytic hierarchical process (AHP) approaches, this paper compares some strategies employed in the development of sustainable road maintenance policies in Colombia. Using a hypothetical case study of a national road network, a set of maintenance policy alternatives are evaluated through the SD model in order to analyze the evolution of road conditions, and quantify costs and emissions. Then, a multi-criteria evaluation is performed applying the AHP methodology. Results show that in the Colombian context, decision-making processes regarding maintenance policies are highly influenced by economic factors, which lead to short-term strategies such as performing corrective maintenance over predictive maintenance. However, further analysis demonstrates that predictive maintenance allows the road network to remain in good conditions. Simultaneously, roadways in adequate conditions contribute to mitigate the environmental impact, because CO2 emissions are directly related to the interventions performed to preserve these roads. The proposed methodology can be used as a support tool to formulate maintenance policies that consider the long-term effects at the technical, environmental, and economic levels.

This article examines the possibility of using solar energy as a viable alternative, necessary to diversify the country’s energy matrix under the potential the Northeast presents. The approach is made with a view to highlighting clean and renewable energy and a global effort to preserve the environment, embodied in treaties and legal instruments of International Law. The central core is the idea of sustainability. The methodology approach is qualitative, in which legal and doctrinal surveys will be used in the legal literature. The text is divided into an introduction that gives an overview of the subject studied, then subdivided into 3 (three) specific topics that discuss the search for alternatives to the Brazilian energy matrix, considering about solar energy and, finally, the regulation of that energy. In the research, the economic viability is verified when the installation expands through this energy matrix, as well as the incremental benefits generated to the environment, in addition to the cost savings in the productive sector.
