Abstract:
Islam’s perspective on sustainable development arises from its vision of a moral economy and society, which may, in turn, be articulated into a structure of values and principles that are conducive to sustainability and growth. This would entail a coherent reading of the Islamic scripture as well as a number of Shariah concepts, such as the principle of public interest (maslahah), the higher purposes (maqasid) of Shariah, the divinely-ordained balance (mizan) in the created universe, and moderation (wasatiyyah). This last proscribes prodigality and waste in the use of resources, but more importantly, it seeks to inject moderation as an integral part of the personality and outlook of Muslim individuals and communities. Other principles that relate to our understanding of the Islamic perspective include that of Divine Oneness (tawhid), the vicegerency of humankind in the earth (khilafah), and justice (al-‘adl).

Abstract:
A change in human development patterns is needed, including mankind’s environmental, economic, and social behavior. Engineering methods and practices have a substantial impact on the way to sustainable development. An overview of the guiding principles of sustainability, sustainable design, green engineering, and sustainable engineering is presented first. Sustainable engineering principles need to be updated to include the present state of the art in human knowledge. Therefore, the updated principles of sustainable development are presented, including traditional and more recent items: a holistic approach, sustainability hierarchies, sustainable consumption, resource scarcity, equalities within and between generations, all stakeholders’ engagement, and internalizing externalities. Environmental, social, and economic impacts that respect humans’ true needs and well-being are of importance to the future. The updated 12 principles include the tridimensional system’s approach, precautionary and preventive approaches, and corporate reporting liability. The environmental principles comprise a circular economy with waste minimization, efficient use of resources, increased share of renewables, and sustainable production. The social pillar includes different views of equality, the engagement of stakeholders, social responsibilities, and decent work. Economic principles embrace human capital, creativity, and innovation in the development of products, processes and services, cost-benefit analysis using the Life Cycle Assessment, and the polluters must pay principle. The principles will require further development by engaging individual engineers, educators, and their associations.

Abstract:
In this article, “things” lawyers call “principles” of environmental law will be discussed from a theoretical perspective. Three fundamental questions are answered: 1. Where does the high moral value that is usually attributed principles come from? 2. What is the exact difference between a principle and a legal rule, and between a principle and a policy? 3. What is the relationship between a principle and more concrete legal rules and policies? It is argued that principles of environmental law receive their high moral value from the ideal of sustainable development. An ideal is a value that is explicit, implicit or latent in the law, or the public and moral culture of a society or group that usually cannot be fully realised, and that partly transcends contingent, historical formulations, and implementations in terms of rules and principles. Principles form a necessary link between directly applicable and enforceable environmental legal rules and the underlying ideal. They are a necessary medium for ideals to find their way into concrete rules and can be used to bridge the gap between the morality of duty and the morality of aspiration. Because of their basis in (written or unwritten) law and their possible direct and intense influence on legal rules concerning activities that may harm the environment, they must be placed within the morality of duty: a bridgehead within the morality of duty reaching out for the morality of aspiration. From the general function of principles of forming a beachhead in the morality of duty, nine more concrete functions can be derived. These functions principles, both of a substantive and of a procedural nature, have, make it possible to distinguish them from legal rules.

Abstract:
Education has an important place in transitional strategy of society to sustainable development that is proved by many international acts. In the outlines of modern approaches, education for sustainable development is characterized as innovative concept of changes to educational activity, as mechanism of realization of strategy of sustainable development, as instrument of modernization of educational practice, as one of the basis of modern educational quality and continuity standards. National system of global aims for consolidation of society of sustainable development with an accent on the significance of educational matter was created in Ukraine. Education for sustainable development is characterized by being part to structure creating social institutes of modern society, transversality, subjective direction, integrativity, forward-looking character. This vector of education research is same with global man’s intentions of civilization development – increase in human’s value in all spheres of life, developing of democratic management, constructive cooperation and communication, etc. Among multidimensional potential of researched phenomenon the most practical value has environmental education. As for today, environmental education is a practical mechanism of transformation of educational system on the principles of sustainable development. Environmental education is seen as an instrument for systematic formation of man’s basic attributes for being part of education for sustainable development field – critical thinking, environmental worldview, subjective-value approach to environment, eco-cultural values. Cumulative result of environmental education is formation of environmental culture. Key words: education, sustainable development, environment, ecology, synergetic, culture, humanism.

Abstract:
<span>The article discusses the principles of education for sustainable development and examples of their implementation in the context of the ecological culture formation. The subject of the study is environmental education for sustainable development. The aim of this research is to formulate the principles of education for sustainable development and to show the ways of their practical implementation. The research uses the comparative approach with elements of hypothetical-deductive analysis. As a result of the study, a set of interrelated principles determining education for sustainable development was defined: continuity, inclusiveness, interdisciplinarity, integration, unity of theory and practice. The results of this study can be used in educational practice in the creation and implementation of curricula and courses, as methodological recommendations for the work of volunteer organizations and educational environmental activities. The results can be used in the sustainable development programs designed by the administrative authorities. Environmental education is an important tool for implementing the concept of sustainable development. Thus, the outlined educational principles should become the basis of educational practices and technologies aimed at the formation of ecological culture and the ecologization of consciousness.</span>

Abstract:
The concept of sustainable development in comparison with other paradigms was the most acceptable, from the point of view of determining the development strategy of society, in the medium and long term. Due to that, such important trends in science and practice as the restructuring and modernization of the economy, energy efficiency, environmental security, "green economy", etc. have been developed. One of the most important areas of research, important both for science and practice, is the measurement sustainability of development using the system of indicators. The quantitative measurement of sustainability makes it possible to shape strategies for the development of countries and regions, taking into account the ecological, social factors that previously could not even compete with economic factors. For Russia, this is important from different perspectives. Among the main reasons there is a significant differentiation of regions in terms of development level and the predominance of "raw materials" in the structure of the economy of many regions. Rational use of natural resources is a necessary condition for the sustainable development of any state or region.

Anthropocentrism apsolutizes existence in relation to human essence. In this, it may downgrade generic essence of human and its primeval need for nature. Principles of sustainable development are challenged. The way of life and work are out of step with these principles. Therefore, central question of sustainable development is: where are the causes of modern man alienation from principles of sustainable development. We have to search for the answers in human nature and nature of human community. Their synthesis can direct socioantropogenesis of modern man in direction of accepting principles of sustainable development, in which principle of need is more important than need itself.

Abstract:
It is universally accepted that renewable energy is an important contributing factor towards the promotion of sustainable development. The implementation of renewable energy needs to be regulated in an effective manner which in turn necessitates the formulation of law and policy geared towards sustainable development. Recent policy developments in South Africa propose to facilitate the promotion of sustainable development through the implementation of renewable energy, among others. In terms of existing energy policy in South-Africa, the interconnectivity of renewable energy and sustainable development is evident. Most notably, the White Paper on Renewable Energy of 2003 promotes increased access to affordable renewable energy in order to contribute to sustainable development. Moreover, the 2008 first review of the National Energy Efficiency Strategy of the Republic of South-Africa of 2005 states that in order for the country’s renewable energy policy to be considered sustainable, it needs to facilitate development in the social, economic and environmental spheres. Notwithstanding, attaining the goal of sustainable development depends on whether all its effecting principles are catered for in the policy developments. Accordingly, in order to ascertain whether South-African law and policy can successfully facilitate/enable sustainable development via the implementation of renewable energy, a specific methodology is proposed. In terms of the New Delhi Declaration of 2002 there are 7 principles of international law effecting sustainable development. These principles will be used as criteria in a principled assessment of South-African renewable energy law and policy in order to establish whether the goal of promoting sustainable development would be effected through the national policy developments.

The task of the national sustainable development strategy is to provide a long term conception for the economy and society, so that this might function and develop in harmony with the environment. Creating the conditions for sustainable agricultural production requires the elaboration and implementation of long-term programs spanning generations. The objective is to find a compromise between the conceptions appearing in the long-term and the short-term programs. In Hungary, several principles, conceptions and proposals have been suggested regarding sustainable agriculture. In the present study, I intend to systematize the above mentioned principles and conceptions, and compare them to the conceptions regarding agriculture in the national strategies of the EU member states. Furthermore, I examine to what extent the agricultural policy of the European Union supports the conceptions regarding agriculture in the strategies. This topic deserves special attention, as the Hungarian national sustainable development strategy is being prepared and is supposed to be finished by the end of 2005.

Abstract:
The complexity of environmental and sustainability challenges has created an ongoing need for innovative and integrated approaches to address them. Design disciplines have a long history. The method “design thinking”, originally applied in architecture, engineering and business, has led to new and creative problem solving, thus creating much potential for use in sustainable development planning. While principles of good design are well established, there has been limited integration of design thinking with environmental science, sustainable development planning and education. This research was focused on how a sustainability approach can be merged with design thinking to develop socially responsible and environmentally sustainable products and services. The case study has been carried out in the master’s study course Sustainable Development Planning. Some of basic principles and stages of design thinking, such as empathy, creativity, collaboration, responsibility and interdisciplinary approach have been tested by using students project work evaluation regarding certain criteria and survey after the study course. The first results of approbated design thinking principles and methods, significant advantages and disadvantages and the perspective of using this method have been analysed and discussed. As the result from this study proposals for the improvement of the content of this study course and related study courses (a study course on sustainable development issues is compulsory in all undergraduate study programs in Latvia) and for the specification of test tasks have been developed, considering also future needs to provide the study course remotely.

In order for sustainability assessments to realise their full potential, there is a need for criteria against which sustainable development might be evaluated. In this article, we employ a principle-based theoretical approach to develop a framework of sustainable development criteria. From an analysis of the different views of the concept of sustainable development, we arrive at two main principles that might guide assessments for sustainable development: resilience and justice. These two principles are explored using the John Rawls's justice theory, and the ideas of C.S. Holling in relation to resilience. We also consider the value to the framework of the concept of efficiency. Finally, the paper concludes with a proposal for the application of this framework within sustainability assessment processes based upon Participatory Integrated Assessment.

Abstract:
This study aims to assess the outcomes of the transition period in terms of sustainable development in Lithuania in 1990–2004. The author aims to reveal the synergies and contradictions between the period of transition and the progress to sustainability. The research uses the conceptual framework for assessment of progress towards achieving sustainable development (APASD) for economies in transition (Kobus, 2005). The framework is based on three principles of sustainable development: the principle of carrying capacity, the principle of intergenerational equity and the principle of intragenerational equity. A three-tier system has been formed: each principle has been assigned two operational criteria and a number of sustainable development indicators. Finally, the framework has been applied to Lithuania unveiling the situation of sustainability and providing recommendations for policy response. The transition period has moved the national development closer to sustainability according to the principles of carrying capacity and intergenerational equity; however, it has not been so favourable for the principle of intragenerational equity.

Abstract:
Of the renewable resources of The Biosphere, agricultural land, including its water resources, is very high among the most important, because it is elemental for human and domestic-animal life. The stability and sustained fertility of the soil largely depend on both prevailing soil–climate conditions and on anthropogenic influences. There are strict limits to the human interference which soil substrates, ground, soil, and surface water, flora, fauna, and microorganisms, can tolerate under moderate, let alone subtropical and tropical, soil–climate conditions. Economic, social, and aesthetic, yield of agricultural resources is limited even where economically and technically optimal use is made of capital and labour. A ‘maximum sustainable yield’ varies as a function of the soil–climate location, the established land-use system, and the technology applied, but only as long as this yield is not exceeded is the enduring availability of the resource ensured. With the demand for land and energy to produce food and agricultural raw materials rising throughout the world, per caput food production continuing to fall (especially in Africa), and the cultivated area per caput declining worldwide, the urgent question for the long term is how to preserve the natural resources of water, soil, and vegetation cover, and how to arrest desertification, deforestation, salinization, soil degradation, and soil erosion. These reflections centre on the call for farming systems which are suited to given locations and do no harm to the environment, and also for sustainability of agricultural production—two aspects which have been badly neglected in the past. The necessary simultaneous tasks of developing farming systems and preserving resources, can be tackled only in relation to specific locations and in a conducive development ‘climate’, where appropriate general conditions prevail. As a rule, the microeconomic development options for coping with these tasks can be improved only at a supra-farm and community level, and require new, environmentally oriented national agricultural and rural development policies.

Abstract:
The term "eco" originates from the Greek word "oikos" and means "home, household", and the fact is that hotel is a kind o f home (at least for a certain period of time) for both tourists and employees. However, being a certain kind of home (oikos), hotel has to follow the basic principles of good housekeeping and those are the principles based on maximising benefits and minimising costs. These principles are at the same time the main principles of the ecology as a scientific approach and as a global movement aimed at preserving our environment and implementing so called "sustainable development" concept. Accordingly, eco-hotel is a hotel that, acting according the principles of "good housekeeping" keeps the environment clean and improves its quality, rises up the level of satisfaction of more sophisticated and ecologically more conscious guests and reduces costs, which, all together helps promoting the concept of tourism sustainable development. These are the principles of so called "environmental management". The main objective of this paper is aimed at analysis of the results that have been achieved so far in implementing different ecological standards in hotels abroad and in the Republic of Croatia. Attention will also be paid to some examples of how these efforts have been supported by the state through the measures of the economic policy.

Abstract:
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations. However, that concept lacks of clarity, which leads to various interpretations. Scholars have argued that the definition of sustainable development can be explained into four elements, namely the integration principle, sustainable use, intra-generational equity, and inter-generational equity. It analyses the elements of integration and sustainable using both legal and non-legal perspectives and shows how the elements have been recognized in various legal documents, while finds that various international commitments have indicated the growing concerns for conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

Purpose Education is a natural process of improvement. Education’s specific features and challenges include a large number of students, with different psychophysical characteristics, simultaneously taking part in a lesson. The purpose of this paper is to examine the factors that can help to meet the challenges of classroom teaching. Design/methodology/approach The principle of “equal opportunities in education” is adopted as the basic premise to improve education. The general sustainability model developed by the author is used as a reference model to analyze the sustainability of the education process. Findings The following elements of the process of sustainable development in education are defined: the improvement micro-projects, as the basic form of using and developing students’ knowledge, and the principles of sustainable development in the classroom as conditions necessary for the effectiveness of micro-projects, in the teaching process carried out in the classroom. They point to the key role of the teacher as the leader in the improvement process. Originality/value The principles of sustainable development define the conditions necessary to ensure the development of the reserve of the students’ knowledge capacity and the possibilities of using it in the classroom teaching process. The micro-project system enables personalization of the teaching process through the use of the capacity reserve contributed by students.

The aim and contribution of this paper at a theoretical level is to discuss CAS and the principles thereof as an alternative to traditional management models as an option to enhance SD in an integrated and holistic manner. At a practical level, the author discusses management and leadership suggestions to implement the principles of CAS to enhance SD. A CAS approach is not static and allows for and encourages emergence as a result to the changing internal and external environments. As CAS is a process that allows for constant change and adaptation it could be compatible in the organization’s SD challenge that is also constantly changing and adapting in response to the internal and external environments. Translating an integrated, holistic and CAS approach might require some cognitive, structural and political changes in the thinking about and understanding of how to deal with SD

Abstract:
The authors studied the indicators that impacted on the sustainable development of industrial enterprises and developed the comprehensive method for their evaluation. This methodology consists of 4 stages: data collection, evaluation of indicators, identification of deviations from the principles of sustainable development, recommendations for adjusting the business model and the network structure of cooperation. A scoring evaluation of the indicators of sustainable development for enterprises is proposed. The authors selected 12 indicators and grouped them according to the economic, environmental and social principles of sustainable development. The study identified seven classes of sustainability for enterprises and their characteristics. If enterprises had higher score, it meant they had higher class and higher sustainability, and vice versa. The method was tested on the example of the evaluation of production of construction-polymer products for 2020. The proposed methodology will enable enterprises to independently evaluate the level of sustainable development. It will also show deviations from the norm separately for each principle of sustainable development. The perspective of this study is that it is possible to develop recommendations for each class of sustainable development.

Implementation of the concept of sustainable development requires the use of a variety of instruments. These instruments may be legal or financial. One of the financial instruments to support sustainable development might be state aid. However, not all aid is beneficial from the point of view of sustainable development. Therefore, an important task is to identify the types of aid that have a positive impact on sustainable development, and on the other hand to show aid which is harmful from the point of sustainable development view. The purpose of this article is to group the principles of sustainable development, in the context of individual order creating sustainable development. The article will also specify the objectives to be achieved by providing different types of support. Then an attempt will be made to answer the question how different types of aid contribute to the achievement of sustainable development.
