Abstract:
Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have achieved remarkable success in associating thousands of genetic variants with complex traits. However, the presence of linkage disequilibrium (LD) makes it challenging to identify the causal variants. To address this critical gap from association to causation, many fine-mapping methods have been proposed to assign well-calibrated probabilities of causality to candidate variants, taking into account the underlying LD pattern. In this manuscript, we introduce a statistical framework that incorporates expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) information to fine-mapping, built on the sum of single-effects (SuSiE) regression model. Our new method, SuSiE2, connects two SuSiE models, one for eQTL analysis and one for genetic fine-mapping. This is achieved by first computing the posterior inclusion probabilities (PIPs) from an eQTL-based SuSiE model with the expression level of the candidate gene as the phenotype. These calculated PIPs are then utilized as prior inclusion probabilities for risk variants in another SuSiE model for the trait of interest. By prioritizing functional variants within the candidate region using eQTL information, SuSiE2 improves SuSiE by increasing the detection rate of causal SNPs and reducing the average size of credible sets. We compared the performance of SuSiE2 with other multi-trait fine-mapping methods with respect to power, coverage, and precision through simulations and applications to the GWAS results of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and body mass index (BMI). Our results demonstrate the better performance of SuSiE2, both when the in-sample linkage disequilibrium (LD) matrix and an external reference panel is used in inference.

Abstract:

Richardson, Tracy Bryant. "Susie G. Gibson High School: A History of the Last Segregated School in Bedford County, Virginia." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26157.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to document the history of Susie G. Gibson High School from its opening in 1954 to its closure in 1970. The researcher documented and described the establishment, operation, and closure of the school. The study includes a description of how Bedford County transitioned from a dual system of segregated education to a single school system for students of all races and how Susie G. Gibson High School was converted for use as a vocational school as it still functions today. Historical research methods were used to collect data and describe the education of Black students who attended the Susie G. Gibson High School. The evidence for the study consists of primary and secondary sources. This evidence includes written records, archives, manuscripts, maps and documents, but also artifacts (Williams, 2007, p.11). The researcher conducted in-depth interviews with students, school employees, and community members who were involved with the school. Minutes of school board meetings and other contemporary records were utilized as well. Studies by Bonner (1939) and Harrell (1951) and histories by other authors were used as secondary sources for historical context. Susie G. Gibson High School opened in the fall of 1954. It was a much anticipated event because it was the first new high school for Blacks in Bedford County, Virginia. Susie G. Gibson High School replaced the much smaller Bedford Training School that began as an elementary school, but which provided some secondary schooling after 1930. The opening of the school was a culmination of negotiations between the Black community and the Bedford County School Board. The school was the pride of the Black community for over a decade and a half. Susie G. Gibson High School changed to a vocational school in 1970 when the U. S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) ordered Bedford County to fully integrate its school system.

Abstract:
Susa is a city of western Iran located in the current plain of Khuzestan close to the Zagros mounts. Throughout its history, Susa was subjected to the double influence of Mesopotamia and Elamite Confederation. In such a dual context has grown a complex and original civilization. This survey is based on the acts of purchase which were discovered during excavations realised by R. De Mecquenem, between 1927 and 1928, in the so-called «Royal City» area. The corpus is made up of 99 texts written in akkadian on uncooked clay shelves, a first publication of which was accomplished by V. Scheil, assyriologist of mission from 1930. This study is organized around two main parts. In a first part, the complete legal analysis of the contracts made it possible to highlight their evolution like their progressive structuring. The results have been compared with those known for the main Mesopotamians sites like for the elamite city of Kabnak. This showed some points of resemblance and dissimilarity attesting of the originality of the Susan right. Within this analysis, a detailed attention was paid to the contracts utilizing elamite concepts, so as to try to give the most precise possible interpretation of it. In a second part, the data contained in these contracts are analysed in order to obtain the characteristics of the Susan society. To establish a realistic portrait of the city, the indications provided by the purchases were compared and supplemented by the consultation of the whole legal corpus, and by the study of the archaeological and ethnological data. The crossing of these various sources offers a complete image of the Susan society during first half of the second millennium

Paris 1, 1997. http://www.theses.fr/1997PA010504.

Full text
Abstract:
529 figurines of terracotta dated of the hellenistic and parthian periods, which are from the Iranian site of Susa, are studied. The aim is to determine the action of the greek civilization in a great city of the near east and to examine cultural contacts between greek and oriental populations. Technical, iconographical and stylistical characters of the terracottas are discribed and commented in a catalogue which takes the evolution of the research in consideration : the use of molds allows a mechanical and industrial production of terracottas. With the catalogue, another volume is divided in three parts. First, the figurines are replaced in their archaeological context for specifying their chronology and their function. The works of the archaeological expeditions which have explored the late levels of susa had even not been published. It was interesting to present their results. The second part is about the fabrication of the figurines. If we compare the technic with the ancient ones, we can determine that the coroplasts were oriental workers. It's also possible to prove the circulation of figurines or molds from on site of the near east to another. The iconography and style of the Susian figurines are examined in the third part. The oriental origin of the coroplasts is corroborate by the fact that the workers frequently adopted a greek iconography but worked in an oriental style. The originality of the Susa's repertory and the importance of the greek culture in Susa are also showed

Abstract:

Abstract:
The scholarly publishing ecosystem is being forced to adapt following changes in funding, scholarly review, and distribution. Taken alone, each changemaker could markedly influence the entire chain of research consumption. Combining these change forces together has the potential for a complete upheaval in the biome. During the 2019 Charleston Library conference, a panel of stakeholders representing researchers, funders, librarians, publishers, digital security experts, and content aggregators addressed such questions as what essential components constitute scholarly literature and who should shepherd them. The 70-minute open dialogue with audience participation invited a range of opinions and viewpoints on the care, feeding, and safekeeping of peer-reviewed scholarly research. The panelists were: James King, Branch Chief & Information Architect at the NIH; Sharon Mattern Büttiker, Director of Content Management at Reprints Desk; Crane Hassold, Senior Director of Threat Research at Agari; and Susie Winter, Director of Communications and Engagement, Springer Nature. The panel was moderated by Beth Bernhardt, Consortia Account Manager at Oxford University Press. Beth posed questions to the panel and each panelist replied from their vantage point. The lively discussion touched on ideas and solutions not yet discussed in an open forum. Such collaborative approaches are now more essential than ever for shaping the progress of the scientific research community. In attendance were librarians, editorial staff, business development managers, data handlers, library collection managers, content aggregators, security experts and CEOs.
