Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The present work deals with the theme of the universe of the movement: Dandy, as a fashion trend in men’s clothing and the influence that it has exercised since its appearance, until today. Dandy is the perfect modern man, who chooses to live life intensely, who gives enormous value and attention to aesthetics and the beauty of details, both exterior and interior. It has very peculiar and avant-garde characteristics for its time. Obsessed by the refinement in the way of being, being and dressing, keeping to the margin of what is common. In a first part of the dissertation, an approach on the origin of the European Dandyism as well as of the Black Dandies, with the purpose of understanding their historical-cultural context. Henceforth, we showcase the art of tailoring, in order to understand its history, as well as a small exploration of certain techniques used by them, also passing through mondaine practices. We also go through the Clothing Industry, since the Industrial Revolution of the century. XIX as well as certain agreements and practices of the time. In order to unite these two themes in the production of the capsule collection, a collaboration with the Diniz & Cruz Group emerges. Finally, with the formal and visual elements collected in the theoretical phase, it is intended to continue them through the creation of a capsule collection in the universe of men’s clothing, which applies the principles of Dandyism with all its components, using Tailoring and Industrial clothing. The creative process started with a survey of the target audience, in order to understand and meet today’s Dandies. In order to conclude the project, it finalizes with micro-validation of the final project of this same group of men.

The main objective of this research is to explore economics issues that may induce impact on lifetime of small businesses during 2002 to 2006. The group of enterprises studied was selected from database of taxpayers recorded at fiscal authority of State of CearÃ. To do that, the methodology was focused on a branch of statistics which deals with survival analysis, called duration analysis or duration modeling in economics. It was applied non-linear model whose non-parametric estimator chosen was KAPLAN-MEIER. Through that methodology, it was developed sceneries based on the following attributes: county where the enterprises were established; economics activities based on national classification, fiscal version 1.0/1.1; and, finally, the relationship between State of Cearà â as fiscal authority â and enterprises. The counties were grouped applying two parameters of stratifications: gross domestic product(GDP) per capita and investment in education per capita. Before any stratification, only counties with thirty or more enterprises starting their activities in year 2002 were considered in sceneries to analysis.

Abstract:
A fundamental question in biology is how cooperation and especially altruism evolves in nature. There is debate as to whether altruism evolves by individual or group selection and if kin selection is the key explanation. Recent research in evolutionary robotics has provided some evidence that altruism emerges in populations of evolving robot controllers. A set of experiments is presented here that evolve heterogeneous, but related, populations of simulated abstract robot controllers with a biologically inspired implicit fitness function based simply on 'eating' enough to survive. In predator-prey simulations, an internal fitness function that is implicit in the selection of individuals is implemented. Predators are paired in a series of trials where they interact to 'consume' the prey and those that survive are selected to reproduce and proceed to the next generation. When individual level selection is implemented, true artificial altruism emerges naturally, where an individual sacrifices its own 'life' so as to allow a related robot to survive. The altruistic trait evolves in situations where there is a high probability that neither of a pair would be successful if both attempt to survive. When situated communication is available, it is used by a robot to claim the prey once located, signalling to the other robot to behave altruistically. Under 'breeding pair' level selection where a pair of robots are required to survive together, they cooperate to ensure that both are successful and when situated communication is available, it is used by the robots to signal that the prey has been located, increasing the amount of collaboration in the population. In selecting for competition, where the robots are not allowed to survive as a pair, in addition to competing, the robots also act altruistically to achieve the goal of only one survivor.

Abstract:
In cancer research the efficacy of a new treatment is often assessed by means of a clinical trial. In such trials the outcome measure of interest is usually time to death from entry into the study. The time to intermediate events may also be of interest, for example time to the spread of the disease to other organs (metastases). Thus, cancer clinical trials can be seen to generate multi-state data, in which patients may be in anyone of a finite number of states at a particular time. The classical analysis of data from cancer clinical trials uses a survival regression model. This type of model allows for the fact that patients in the trial will have been observed for different lengths of time and for some patients the time to the event of interest will not be observed (censored). The regression structure means that a measure of treatment effect can be obtained after allowing for other important factors. Clinical trials are not conducted in isolation, but are part of an on-going learning process. In order to assess the current weight of evidence for the use of a particular treatment a Bayesian approach is necessary. Such an approach allows for the formal inclusion of prior information, either in the form of clinical expertise or the results from previous studies, into the statistical analysis. An initial Bayesian analysis, for a single non-recurrent event, can be performed using non-temporal models that consider the occurrence of events up to a specific time from entry into the study. Although these models are conceptually simple, they do not explicitly allow for censoring or covariates. In order to address both of these deficiencies a Bayesian fully parametric multiplicative intensity regression model is developed. The extra complexity of this model means that approximate integration techniques are required. Asymptotic Laplace approximations and the more computer intensive Gauss-Hermite quadrature are shown to perform well and yield virtually identical results. By adopting counting process notation the multiplicative intensity model is extended to the multi-state scenario quite easily. These models are used in the analysis of a cancer clinical trial to assess the efficacy of neutron therapy compared to standard photon therapy for patients with cancer of the pelvic region. In this trial there is prior information both in the form of clinical prior beliefs and results from previous studies. The usefulness of multi-state models is also demonstrated in the analysis of a pilot quality of life study. Bayesian multi-state models are shown to provide a coherent framework for the analysis of clinical studies, both interventionist and observational, yielding clinically meaningful summaries about the current state of knowledge concerning the disease/treatment process.

Abstract:
The goal of this work is to expand the knowledge on the field of Venn Prediction employed with Survival Data. Standard Venn Predictors have been used with Random Forests and binary classification tasks. However, they have not been utilised to predict events with Survival Data nor in combination with Random Survival Forests. With the help of a Data Transformation, the survival task is transformed into several binary classification tasks. One key aspect of Venn Prediction are the categories. The standard number of categories is two, one for each class to predict. In this work, the usage of ten categories is explored and the performance differences between two and ten categories are investigated. Seven data sets are evaluated, and their results presented with two and ten categories. For the Brier Score and Reliability Score metrics, two categories offered the best results, while Quality performed better employing ten categories. Occasionally, the models are too optimistic. Venn Predictors rectify this performance and produce well-calibrated probabilities.

Abstract:
This thesis is focused on the question -of how authoritarian leaders remain in power. The main idea is that non-democratic leaders may use repression as a key electoral tool. Chapter 1 develops a model where an incumbent leader faces electoral competition from the opposition. The leader may seek to use violence, produced by the military, in order to improve his chances of re-election. The core of the chapter is the analysis of a collusive equilibrium in which the leader offers a bribe to the military and the latter responds by producing politically motivated violence. The collusive equilibrium gives rise to several policy implications. For instance, higher foreign aid donations contribute to the political survival of authoritarian leaders.

Abstract:
The importance of developing personalized risk prediction estimates has become increasingly evident in recent years. In general, patient populations may be heterogenous and represent a mixture of different unknown subtypes of disease. When the source of this heterogeneity and resulting subtypes of disease are unknown, accurate prediction of survival may be difficult. However, in certain disease settings the onset time of an observable intermediate event may be highly associated with these unknown subtypes of disease and thus may be useful in predicting long term survival. Throughout this dissertation, we examine an approach to incorporate intermediate event information for the prediction of long term survival: the landmark model. In Chapter 1, we use the landmark modeling framework to develop procedures to assess how a patient’s long term survival trajectory may change over time given good intermediate outcome indications along with prognosis based on baseline markers. We propose time-varying accuracy measures to quantify the predictive performance of landmark prediction rules for residual life and provide resampling-based procedures to make inference about such accuracy measures. We illustrate our proposed procedures using a breast cancer dataset. In Chapter 2, we aim to incorporate intermediate event time information for the prediction of survival. We propose a fully non-parametric procedure to incorporate intermediate event information when only a single baseline discrete covariate is available for prediction. When a continuous covariate or multiple covariates are available, we propose to incorporate intermediate event time information using a flexible varying coefficient model. To evaluate the performance of the resulting landmark prediction rule and quantify the information gained by using the intermediate event, we use robust non-parametric procedures. We illustrate these procedures using a dataset of post-dialysis patients with end-stage renal disease. In Chapter 3, we consider improving efficiency by incorporating intermediate event information in a randomized clinical trial setting. We propose a semi-nonparametric two-stage procedure to estimate survival by incorporating intermediate event information observed before the landmark time. In addition, we present a testing procedure using these resulting estimates to test for a difference in survival between two treatment groups. We illustrate these proposed procedures using an AIDS dataset.

Abstract:
A non-proportional hazards model is developed. The model can accommodate right censored, interval censored and double interval censored data sets. There is also an extension of the model to include multiplicative gamma frailties. The basic model is an extension of the dynamic Bayesian survival model developed by Gamerman (1987), but with some alterations and using a different method of model fitting. The model developed here, the Normal Dynamic Survival Model, models both the log-baseline hazard and covariate effects by a piecewise constant and correlated process, based on some division of the time axis. Neighbouring piecewise constant parameters are related by a simple evolution equation: normal with mean zero and unknown variance to be estimated. The method of estimation is to use Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations: Gibbs sampling with a Metropolis-Hastings step. For double interval censored data an iterative data augmentation procedure is considered: exploiting the comparative ease at which interval censored observations may be modelled. The model is applied within a range of well known, and illustrative data sets, with convincing results. In addition the impact of censoring is investigated by a simulation study.

Abstract:

Texas white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) breeding operations frequently release captive-reared deer in anticipation of increasing the genetic quality of their deer herd. There is little understanding of how well captive-reared deer acclimate following release. My goal was to determine survival, distribution, and fawn survival of captive-reared white-tailed deer following spring and fall releases. Thus, 223 deer (120 F, 103 M) were released in spring and fall liberations from fall 2013–spring 2015 into a 2,631-ha high-fenced pasture. Deer were released by age cohorts ranging from 1.5–≥3.5 years of age for does and 1.5–3.5 years of age for bucks. During spring 2014 (n = 18) and 2015 (n = 18) 36 does were fitted with Vaginal Implant Transmitters, which resulted in the capture of 29 fawns. In 2014, fawn survival was estimated 60%, whereas 2015 fawn survival was 21%. Adult survival was measured for 127 (70 F, 57 M) radio-collared deer for 1-year following liberation. Survival of does and bucks across all releases was 90% and 75%, respectively. A selection index was used to determine the preferred distance of 54 (29 F, 25 M) captive-reared white-tailed deer distributed following release. Does stayed close to the corresponding breeding pen (75% of locations ≤ 1 km from pens), while bucks (40% of locations ≤ 1 km from pens) of all age cohorts covered a larger expanse of area compared to does. In conclusion, captive-reared white-tailed deer were capable of surviving liberation from pens, but accommodations such as maintaining a high density of water and supplemental feed will aid in survival. Philopatric nature of does was evident in the lack of distribution following release. High density of does around the breeding pens during fawning may explain the decrease in fawn survival. Distributing release sites across the property could promote a more even distribution of does.

Möller, Christine. "Regulation of Mast Cell Survival." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala University, Department of Genetics and Pathology, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-4703.

Full text
Abstract:

Mast cells are long-lived effector cells of importance for both acute and chronic inflammations. Mast cells can be activated in many different ways, leading to the release of inflammatory mediators. In contrast to most other inflammatory cells, activated mast cells have the capacity to recover, regranulate and thereby be activated again.

In this thesis I have investigated the mechanisms involved in regulating activation-induced mast cell survival. We have found that cross-linking of FcεRI-bound IgE with an antigen (IgER-CL) induces a survival program in mast cells. Upon IgER-CL, mouse and human mast cells upregulate the pro-survival Bcl-2 family gene A1/Bfl-1. A1-/- mast cells degranulate upon FcεRI activation but they cannot recover most likely due to the lack of A1. Sensitized and provoked A1-/- mice exhibit lower amounts of mast cells compared to littermate controls. In contrast to mast cells, no Bfl-1 expression or survival promotion can be detected in basophils after IgER-CL. Another mast cell secretagogue, an adenosine receptor agonist, neither promoted upregulation of A1 nor survival.

Although it is well established that mast cell survival is dependent on stem cell factor (SCF), it has not been described how this process is regulated. We have found that SCF promotes survival through Akt-mediated inhibition of the forkhead transcription factor FOXO3a and its transcriptional target Bim, a BH3-only pro-apoptotic protein. SCF-treatment prevents upregulation of Bim protein expression and leads to an upregulation of Bim phosphorylation through PI3-kinase and MEK-dependent pathways. Overexpression of FOXO3a causes an upregulation of Bim and induces mast cell apoptosis, even in the presence of SCF.

Taken together, the work in this thesis demonstrates that A1/Bfl-1 and Bim play key roles in mast cell survival. These findings might be of importance in understanding the mechanisms of mast cell longevity and hence for possible new therapeutics used for mast cell-associated inflammations.

Cohn, Susan Art College of Fine Arts UNSW. "Recoding jewellery: identity, body, survival." Publisher:University of New South Wales. Art, 2009. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/43809.

Full text
Abstract:
RECODING JEWELLERY: identity, body, survival addresses a central problem facing contemporary jewellery practice: through the course of the Contemporary Jewellery Movement, the potential of the jewellery-object to mediate intricate social relationships has become constrained. This is in part due to a singular focus of ideas in the field, and in part due to the developmental trajectory of contemporary jewellery networks. Caught up in the art-craft debate, contemporary jewellery missed the potentials in theory for developing a critical voice. This was not helped by the fact that academic discourse (philosophical, social, sexual, political) has largely neglected the significances of jewellery. The aim in this thesis is to negotiate this mutual neglect - or 'double gap' - by finding connections between theory and jewellery in practice. Jewellery involves complex interactions between makers, objects, wearers and audiences within social networks. Possessing a distinct set of codes enlivened by its relationship to the body, jewellery is a way of thinking and connecting which is strongly embedded in the activities of managing identity that define cultures and epochs. In the process, the instinct for adornment becomes an integral means of survival. This thesis draws on modern and postmodern theory, as well as art and jewellery practices, to examine contemporary shifts in thinking about identity, the body and reproduction. Through the three main chapters of this thesis I endeavour to: (i) provide an informed interpretation of the internal and external pressures that have defined contemporary jewellery practice over time; (ii) introduce relevant examples of my own work, and seek ways to move beyond the limitations of my own practice; and (iii) advocate new ways of thinking about contemporary jewellery that might lead it to a different voice. Reflected in this approach are three fundamental influences to my practice: the Contemporary Jewellery Movement; non-jewellery practices such as art, architecture, street culture, technology and performance; and academic writing across a number of fields. The thesis concludes with a discussion of how these interests came together in a single show, Black Intentions. However, the span of work covered extends through my career in jewellery to provide a basis for future directions.

Abstract:
Election boycotts are a common occurrence in unconsolidated democracies, particularly in the developing world, with prominent examples from recent years occurring in Venezuela, Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia. Despite the frequent occurrence of boycotts, there are few studies available in the scholarly literature concerning the effectiveness of electoral boycotts, particularly as a strategy of opposition parties seeking to bring about the end of electoral authoritarian governments. This paper is based in the democratization literature, with a particular focus on the behavior and vulnerabilities of hybrid or electoral authoritarian regimes. Using an original dataset with global coverage including hybrid regimes from 1981 to 2006, this paper uses event-history analysis to determine the efficacy of boycotts in national elections among other risk factors thought to undermine electoral authoritarian regimes as well as the possibilities for subsequent democratization occurring following both contested and boycotted electoral processes.

Abstract:
The pulmonate snail, Helix aspersa, has the ability to survive long bouts of anoxia by depressing its metabolism. Direct calorimetry was used to measure the metabolic heat production of the snails in this state. During 24-48 hrs of anoxia, heat production varied with the oxygen levels and fell as low as 2% of that during normoxia. The Helix central nervosa system also depressed its metabolism during anoxia. Electrophysiological recordings revealed decreases in both action potential firing (spike arrest) and membrane conductance (channel arrest). These processes allow the maintenance of ionic gradients during a period when ion pumping has presumably been down-regulated to conserve ATP. These abilities to respond to anoxia were found in both whole brains and isolated neurons. The mitochondrial inhibitor antimycin resulted in responses very similar to those seen in anoxia. This may be due to the fact that mitochondrial blockade with antimycin results in an increased production of reactive oxygen species, intracellular messengers which have been implicated in the anoxia responses of several cell types. The similar responses of anoxia and antimycin suggest that a high concentration of oxygen radicals triggers entry into metabolic depression. Support for this hypothesis came from neurons incubated in ascorbate (an antioxidant). With the amount of reactive oxygen species diminished, these neurons no longer responded to an anoxic challenge, evidence for the importance of reactive oxygen species in the anoxia response of snails. During anoxia, intracellular calcium levels are protected by an upregulated Ca2+ pump, resulting in the rapid clearance of any calcium transients and a decreased basal calcium level. These experiments have revealed the potential for the snail to become a model organism in the study of oxygen sensing and metabolic depression.

Abstract:
Using data from Hedge Fund Research, Inc. (HFR), this study adapts and expands on existing methods in survival analysis in an attempt to investigate whether hedge funds mortality can be predicted on the basis of certain hedge funds characteristics. The main idea is to determine the characteristics which contribute the most to the survival and failure probabilities of hedge funds and interpret them. We establish hazard models with time-independent covariates, as well as time-varying covariates to interpret the selected hedge funds characteristics. Our results show that size, age, performance, strategy, annual audit, fund offshore and fund denomination are the characteristics that best explain hedge fund failure. We find that 1% increase in performance decreases the hazard by 3.3%, the small size and the less than 5 years old hedge funds are the most likely to die and the event-driven strategy is the best to use as compare to others. The risk of death is 0.668 times lower for funds who indicated that an annual audit is performed as compared to the funds who did not indicated that an annual audit is performed. The risk of death for the offshore hedge funds is 1.059 times higher than the non-offshore hedge funds.

Robertson, Fiona E. "Starvation-survival in Escherichia coli." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1996. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/63636/.

Full text
Abstract:
The population dynamics of carbon-starved E. coli K12 cultures was investigated. It was found that less cell lysis occurred when cells were previously grown in low glucose concentrations. Exponential-phase cells grown previously in 0.05% (w/v) glucose had survival rates comparable with their stationary-phase counterparts, suggesting that the rate of growth is more important in determining the outcome of starvation than the phase of batch culture growth. Long-termstarved cells (18-24 months) showed very little protein, DNA and RNA synthesis. Methionine was shown to alter the de novo synthesis protein profiles of longterm- starved cells and growth was seen to occur in the presence of methionine. This suggests that radio-labelling of proteins with 35S-methionine in these cells should be interpreted with care as the cells have been subjected to a nutrient upshift. Radio-labelling of proteins with 3H-leucine did not have the same effect. The ATP content of cells during prolonged incubation was shown to decrease in the first 48 hours incubation, increase until 5-7 days incubation then decrease after 7-8 days. After 13 days a slow, steady increase occurred. The ATP content of cells incubated for 16 days was higher than that of 48 hour-incubated cells. The physiology of long-term-starved cells was investigated with respect to their permeability to routine bacteriological stains ( e.g. DAPI, saffranin, Geimsa) and it was found that very few of these dyes were able to penetrate the cells, indicating that a decrease in cell permeability may be an important factor in survival as is seen in endospores of Bacillus species and swarmer cells of Rhodomicrobium vannielii and Caulobacter crescentus. Resistance of long-term starved cells to heat and biocide challenge was increased in comparison with exponential- and short-term (48 hour) stationary-phase cells and the resistance to biocides was shown to be retained through subsequent generations. Examination of the nucleoids of long-term-starved cells revealed that a more condensed form was present in cultures incubated for over 14 days, suggesting that dehydration of the DNA had occurred, similar to the situation found in endospores of Bacillus species and suggestive of dormancy. Analysis of outer-membrane proteins and lipopolysaccharide of long-term-starved cells showed that alterations occurred to the surface of the cells and it was demonstrated that hydrophobicity changes occurred. Hydrophobicity reached a maximum after 48 hours incubation then subsequently declined between days 2 and 3 which corresponded with an increase in cell numbers. Cell surface hydrophobicity was shown to be a potential method for separating heterogeneous, carbon-starved populations into homogeneous subpopulations. The data suggest that E. coli produces a dormant survival cell type which is morphologically and physiologically distinct from the parent cell.

Abstract:
Free radical and aldehydic breakdown product content were determined, by EPR and UV / visible spectroscopy, primarily in intermediate (desiccation tolerant) seeds of Carica papaya L. (Papaya) and recalcitrant (desiccation intolerant) seeds of Aesculus hippocastanum L. (Horse chestnut), but also in other species covering a range of desiccation tolerances, with a view to determining the role of oxidative stress as a diagnostic marker for desiccation tolerance. Axes of non-senescent highly viable recalcitrant seeds of horse chestnut were metabolically active, contained products of lipid peroxidation, displayed low levels of enzymatic protection against activated oxygen and peroxides, and a two-peak free radical EPR signal. During fully hydrated storage at 16 °C for up to 18 months, seeds exhibited, sequentially, an increase in germination rate, a transient increase in intensities of both the low field and high field EPR peaks, a significant increase in membrane leakage and decrease in seed viability, germination rate, and SOD and peroxidase activities. Drying 'unstored' seeds below and embryonic axis moisture content of 40 to 50 % initiated viability loss. At < 25 % moisture content all axes were inviable and displayed a 2- to 4-fold increase in solute leakage, lipid peroxidation products and the low field EPR signal. Seed desiccation sensitivity increased with hydrated storage. The accumulation of lipid peroxidation products and free radicals on drying generally occurred to a greater extent, or at a higher moisture content, than observed with unstored seeds. The results indicate a mediating role for oxidative stress in recalcitrant seed viability loss which is differentially expressed during hydrated, 'natural' ageing and desiccation. Similar trends were seen in other recalcitrant species with the increase in lipid peroxidation products occurring around the point of viability loss. However the study of a more orthodox species (papaya) revealed no such trends.

Abstract:
Survival analysis is an old area of statistics dedicated to the study of time-to-event random variables. Typically, survival data have three important characteristics. First, the response is a waiting time until the occurrence of a predetermined event. Second, the response can be "censored", meaning that we do not observe its actual value but a bound for it. Last, the presence of covariates. While there exists some feasible parametric methods for modelling this type of data, they usually impose very strong assumptions on the real complexity of the response and how it interacts with the covariates. While these assumptions allow us to have tractable inference schemes, we lose inference power and overlook important relationships in the data. Due to the inherent limitations of parametric models, it is natural to consider non-parametric approaches. In this thesis, we introduce a novel Bayesian non-parametric model for survival data. The model is based on using a positive map of a Gaussian process with stationary covariance function as prior over the so-called hazard function. This model is thoughtfully studied in terms of prior behaviour and posterior consistency. Alternatives to incorporate covariates are discussed as well as an exact and tractable inference scheme.

The main aim of this empirical study is to determine which factors influence the survival of new Portuguese companies. We will do so through survival analysis of 1130 companies born in the Portuguese manufacturing sector between 2005 and 2009. The database used SCIE, based on the report published by the INE. Our survival analysis is centered on five company variables: Growth, Size, Technological, Dimension, and Sector. To determine the impact of these variables on survival we used the Cox regression model. Before we ran an analysis through the Cox model we also studied the behavior of the variables through a Kaplan-Meier survival estimate, where we concluded that the second and the third year are those in which firms present the highest mortality rates (about 10% in each year). Moving into the Cox regression analysis, we were unable to reject any of our original hypotheses.

Abstract:
Environmental entrepreneurs are considered to be important drivers for an environmentally sustainable development. As other entrepreneurs, they face survival challenges while operating their businesses. Due to the increased importance of environmental entrepreneurs in counteracting environmental issues we argue that it is necessary to gain an understanding of their specific challenges of survival. In this thesis, we build theory based on environmental venture cases located in Sweden. We provide an extensive overview of the current literature and contribute by identifying an institutional dimension being of high relevance in this field. Our findings are of particular interest for policy makers, public institutions, environmental entrepreneurs and their advisors. Additionally, we provide further necessary access to this relatively new research field and suggest future research directions.
