Full textThis paper utilizes survey data to compare several non-survey methods of modeling the economic impacts of biofuels plants. It examines differences in the input coefficients derived from the survey versus the trade coefficients generated through the non-survey methods. It finds that of the three non-survey methods examined, the Swenson (2006) scenario input coefficients most closely represent those found in the survey based on the performance of the non-survey scenario input coefficients in a variety of statistical tests. Further, it examines the economic impacts (multipliers) generated by these scenarios compared to those generated from the survey. Based upon statistical tests of the multipliers, the Swenson scenario’s estimated impacts most closely represent the impacts derived from the survey.

Full textChen, An-Le. "A survey of cataclysmic variables from the Edinburgh-Cape Blue object survey." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/17033.
Full textThis thesis is based on the Edinburgh-Gape Blue Object Survey and includes a general review of blue star sky surveys, a detailed discussion of the selection techniques, the present status of the survey, and follow-up photometry and spectroscopy of the cataclysmic variable stars (GVs) found by the survey. Because of the north-south imbalance in the number of blue objects, the Edinburgh-Gape Blue Object survey was designed to discover previously unknown blue objects with B≤~18 at high galactic latitude in the southern hemisphere. At present, all the planned fields (61 fields) in the North Galactic Pole region and 26 fields in the South Galactic Pole regions are complete, covering 2488 square degrees. The preliminary results show that the survey has an internal completeness of ~94% for objects with U-B bluer than the cutoff --0.3, and selects objects with an accuracy in photographic U-B of 0.16 mag. UBV measurements and spectra have been obtained for ~2000 objects. Half of these objects are hot subdwarfs which comprise the sdO, sdB, and sdOB stars. The white dwarfs account for about 17% of the total. About 18% of the objects are horizontal branch B and normal B stars. Cataclysmic variable stars and quasars comprise only a small fraction, 2 and 6 percent, respectively. Less than one percent are galaxies. The remaining ~5% have unknown spectral classes at present. So far, 25 cataclysmic variable stars have been found by the survey. The space density was estimated to be 1.6xl0-⁶ pc-³. Among these cataclysmic variables, 6 dwarf novae and 8 nova-like variables are new discoveries; detailed study of their photometric and spectroscopic characteristics are discussed in Chapters 6-10. One of the stars discovered, a close binary with large reflection effect, is a predecessor of the cataclysmic variables. Napier's (1968) method for the reflection effect in close binaries was used to model the light curve in order to solve for the physical properties of the system. Photometry, spectroscopy, and model fits for this system are discussed in Chapter 5.

Full textThis dissertation aims to present a structured overview of the state-of-the-art in cooperative robotics research. As we illustrate in this dissertation, there are several interesting aspects that draws attention to the field, among which 'Life Sciences' and 'Applied AI' are emphasized. We analyse the key concepts and main research issues within the field, and discuss its relations to other disciplines, including cognitive science, biology, artificial life and engineering. In particular it can be noted that the study of collective robot behaviour has drawn much inspiration from studies of animal behaviour. In this dissertation we also analyse one of the most attractive research areas within cooperative robotics today, namely RoboCup. Finally, we present a hierarchy of levels and mechanisms of cooperation in robots and animals, which we illustrate with examples and discussions.

Salmonsson, Martin. "Foreign aid : an elite survey." Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, Political Science, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-915.
Full textThe inability of foreign aid to generate an appropriate model for development and the complexities related to Official Development Assistance (ODA) to the “Third World” are what initiated my interest to write about foreign aid. In this study I seek to further elabo-rate on this complex issue on foreign aid; does it lead to development or dependency?
Within the debate, the controversy exists around aid dependency and economic growth and is fuelled by the fact that Sub-Saharan Africa has barely achieved any poverty reduction since the 1960´s. Mr. William Easterly an ex-World Bank employee represents the critical opinion to Foreign Aid. He argues that the international foreign aid programme is characterized by a westernized, patronizing and post-colonial approach, which yields dependency rather than development in today’s world of free-market economies. Foreign aid as we know it must therefore be abolished. Mr. Jeffrey Sachs Current World Bank employee and UN secretary advisor represents the supporters of foreign aid. He argues that foreign aid works efficiently and calls for the doubling of foreign aid and the need for donor countries to reach the one percent target of GDP.
In this case study of foreign aid, the subject under investigation (the argumentation within the public debate) is studied through a historical perspective. Secondly a comparison will be made between the public debate and the way this issue is discussed among field workers.
An interesting observation when analyzing the discussions on foreign aid efficiency in international aid programme is that the polarization witnessed in the public- or “elite” debate is not as obvious when analyzing the opinion of aid-workers. This would imply that uncertainty about aid efficiency is exaggerated in the public debate.
By resolving problems of classical development theories, rather than rethinking the purpose of aid based on its positive affects, foreign aid may be robbed of its real potential.
