Abstract:
Data centre networks are currently experiencing a dramatic increase in the amount of network traffic that needs to be handled due to cloud technology and several emerging applications. To address this challenge, mega data centres are required with hundreds of thousands of servers interconnected with high bandwidth interconnects. Current data centre networks, based on electronic packet switches, consume a huge amount of power to support the increased bandwidth required by the emerging applications. Optical interconnects have gained more and more attentions as a promising solution offering high capacity and consuming much lower energy compared to the commodity switch based solutions. This thesis provides a thorough literature study on optical interconnects for data centre networks that are expected to efficiently handle the future traffic. Two major types of optical interconnects have been reviewed. One is referred to hybrid switching, where optical switching deals big flows while electronic switches handles traffic in packet level. The other one is based on all-optical switch, where power-consuming electronic interconnects can be completely avoided. Furthermore, the thesis includes a qualitative comparison of the presented schemes based on their main features such as topology, technology, network performance, scalability, energy consumption, etc.

Abstract:
High precision data from household travel survey (HTS) is extremely important for the transportation research, traffic models and policy formulation. Traditional methods of data collection were imprecise because they relied on people’s memories of trip information, such as date and location, and the remainder data had to be obtained by certain supplemental tools. The traditional methods suffered from intensive labor, large time consumption, and unsatisfactory data precision. Recent research trends to employ smartphone apps to collect HTS data. In this study, there are two goals to be addressed. First, a smartphone app is developed to realize a smartphone-based method only for data collection. Second, the researcher evaluates whether this method can supply or replace the traditional tools of HTS. Based on this premise, the smartphone app, TravelSurvey, is specially developed and used for this study. TravelSurvey is currently compatible with iPhone 4 or higher and iPhone Operating System (iOS) 6 or higher, except iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 plus and iOS 8. To evaluate the feasibility, eight individuals are recruited to participate in a pilot HTS. Afterwards, seven of them are involved in a semi-structured interview. The interview is designed to collect interviewees’ feedback directly, so the interview mainly concerns the users’ experience of TravelSurvey. Generally, the feedback is positive. In this study, the pilot HTS data is successfully uploaded to the server by the participants, and the interviewees prefer this smartphone-based method. Therefore, as a new tool, the smartphone-based method feasibly supports a typical HTS for data collection.

Abstract:
The idea that emergent content generation for video games will add depth to the gameplay experience is something often mentioned. With this article I want to make a connection between the science of complex systems and emergence, and the area of video game research and development. Not only does emergent content generation add depth to gameplay experience, it would also reduce the stress on developers, if diverse content could be generated automatically. I have conducted a keyword search on 412 articles from renown conferences with the following keywords: complex system", "emerg", and "spontaneous". The results show that while emergence is quite popular in the fi eld of video game research, complex system as a term is not.

Abstract:
In this paper, we discuss the question whether or not the real estate market is efficient. We define market efficiency and the efficient market hypothesis as it had been developed in the literature on financial markets. Then, we discuss the empirical evidence that exists concerning the efficiency or inefficiency of financial markets, usually seen as the reference markets as far as market efficiency is concerned. In a separate section, we turn to the real estate market. There, we define the real estate market and discuss various aspects that are decisive for the efficiency of that market. As it turns out, the result found in the literature is inconclusive. Majority of studies provide evidence supporting inefficiency of the real estate market while several studies maintain the notion of real estate market efficiency.

Pader, Kruthardh. "Blockchain Applications in Healthcare Industry : A literature survey." Thesis, Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:bth-21800.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Blockchain technology may seem like a complex system, but it is simply a decentralized database designed to remove the need for third-party organisation in data management. Blockchain is being researched for uses in the various industry out of which healthcare is one. Healthcare industry suffers from various issues such as imperfect data, a broken medical history that is split across various healthcare institutions, and so on. Blockchain might be the approach it needs to optimize it to a greater level of functioning. Objectives: The objectives of this report are to understand whether the decentralization feature along with other features of blockchain technology can be advantageous to the healthcare industry and also to summarize the previous implementation for the use cases of the technology in the domain. Methods: The method used is a literature survey. We perform a study selection process in four steps. After each step, the number of publications is reduced as unwanted publications are omitted using search strings, inclusion and exclusion criteria. We even conducted a study quality assessment which helps us analyse the quality offindings from the final set of selected papers in answering the research questions. Results: We have summarized the findings from the 36 selected papers from the study selection process according to the research questions. Conclusions: Blockchain technology provides data security, once any data is registered on the blockchain it cannot be altered or manipulated. It eliminates the need for a third party to verify the transactions on the chain. As blockchain is a budding new technology with very little age under its belt, there needs to more research on the topic before this can be applied over a large scale of systems that are operating in critical areas such as healthcare. Even though implementing blockchain for the use cases such as Electronic Medical Records (EMRs), research trials and so on, it can not be done immediately as the exposure of this technology to the common public and healthcare individuals is very limited.

Full text
Abstract:
For decades, literature has reported on the perceived conflict between usability and security. Their mutual trade-off needs to be considered and addressed whenever security products are developed. Achieving well-balanced levels of both is a precondition for sufficient security since users tend to reject unusable solutions. To assess it correctly, usability should be evaluated in the context of security. This paper aims to identify and describe universally applicable and solution-independent factors that affect the perceived usability of security mechanisms. The selected methodology was a systematic literature review during which multiple database resources were queried with different search terms. Application of predefined selection criteria led to the creation of an initial bibliography before backward snowballing was applied to minimize the risk of missing further material of importance. All 70 included publications were then analyzed through thematic analysis. The study resulted in the identification of 14 themes and 30 associated sub-themes representing aspects with reported influence on perceived usability in the context of security. While some of them were only mentioned sparsely, the most prominent and thus presumably most significant ones were: simplicity, information and support, task completion time, error rates, and error management. The identified novel themes can increase knowledge about factors that influence usability. This can be useful for different groups: end-users may be empowered to choose appropriate solutions more consciously, developers may be able to avoid common usability pitfalls when designing new products, and system administrators may benefit from a better understanding of how to configure solutions and how to educate users efficiently.

Abstract:
Context: Scoping is admitted as a key activity in Market Driven Software Development for handling the constant inflow of requirements. It helps in identifying the features, domains and products which help for gaining economic benefits in Software Product Line (SPL) development. Beyond SPL, managing the scope of the project is a major risk for project management. Continuously changing scope creates a congestion state to handle the requirements inflow which causes negative consequences like scope scrap and scope creep. However, for managing negative consequences caused due to requirements volatility depicts a need for work on requirements scoping outside the product line.  Objectives: In this study, an exploratory work is carried to identify the literature and industrial perspectives on requirements scoping outside the product line. The main objectives are: Identifying the state of literature of requirements scoping outside product line and variability analysis. To explore the industrial practice on requirements scoping. Suggesting recommendations in improving the scoping process based on the literature and survey.  Methods: Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using snowballing procedure was conducted to identify the literature available on requirements scoping outside the product line. Quality assessment using rigor and relevance was performed to find the trustworthiness of the papers obtained through SLR. The data obtained through SLR was analyzed using narrative analysis. Furthermore, an industrial survey was performed using web questionnaire to identify the industrial perspective on requirements scoping. Statistical analysis was performed for analyzing the data obtained from survey.  Results: 23 relevant papers were identified through SLR. The results were categorized as definitions obtained, phenomena, challenges and methods/tools identified. From the finding of SLR, an industrial survey was conducted, which has obtained 93 responses. The challenges that were identified through literature were validated through survey and are prioritized. Moreover, the study identified additional challenges that are not discussed in the literature. Additionally, the approaches followed in organizations while scoping the requirements were identified through the survey. Conclusions: This study identified that scope creep is the most frequently occurring phenomenon that organizations are facing throughout the lifecycle of the project. In addition project delays, quality issues and project cost were identified as the most occurring scoping associated challenges. Moreover, scoping activity was identified as the continuous activity which changes significantly throughout the lifecycle. Finally, suggestions were given for improving the scoping process.

Emmett, Gloria J. "The Process of Ritual: a Twenty-Year Survey of Literature." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1998. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc279261/.

Full text
Abstract:
Use of the term "ritual" in PsycLit from 1975-1995 was examined through an archival study. Abstracts identified as including any form of the term were coded for valence, target population, study type, and differential area of interest. Valence was predominantly positive, consistent across time, with a growing negative trend. Interest in ritual has increased. Key elements of adaptive ritual were identified as recurrence across time, shared symbolism and volitional participation. A Dynamic Process of Ritual is proposed which includes the individual, society, and chaos in a fluctuating relationship, all operating within an additional dimension of a continuum of ritualization in which the individual's position is determined by personal and societal complexity and individual response to crisis.

Soderberg, Karen Amelia Phillips. "A survey of selected contemporary Swedish choral composers and literature." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185410.

Full text
Abstract:
This study presents a survey of selected Contemporary Swedish Choral Composers and Literature representative of the trends in contemporary Swedish choral music. The varied compositional styles and techniques of composers Sven-David Sandstrom, Thomas Jennefelt, Karin Rehnqvist and Andres Hillborg exemplify these trends. Little information is readily available about the current generation of choral composers outside of Sweden. Most of the available materials concentrate on the music of composers of the 1940s Monday Group such as Sven-Erik Back and Ingvar Lidholm and Karl-Birger Blomdahl, the works of Gunnar Bucht of the 1950s who reacted against modernism, the 1960s avant-garde styles of Bengt Hambraeus, Sigfriend Naumann, Arne Mellnas and Folke Rabe. This survey discusses the life, career and musical styles of each of the composers and analysis of an a cappella work illustrative of their musical styles. Fundamental to the growth and musical development of the representative composers is an examination of the historical background, foundation and tradition of choral singing in Sweden. The select bibliography, list of works by the composers, catalogs of choral music, list of institutions and organizations, and publishers, is intended to serve as a reference guide.

Full text
Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to discuss and analyse the influenceof data uncertainties with regard to the reliability of materialflow analysis (MFA) studies. MFA, as a part of environmentalsystems analysis, is a method belonging to the research field ofindustrial ecology and more specifically industrial metabolism. As such, the method strives at giving a holistic view of thecomplex world we live in, in order to reduce negativeenvironmental impact. Among other things, MFA studies have beenproposed to be useful for priority setting and following up inmunicipalities.

Serving as a starting point is a local case study of flows ofnitrogen in a Swedish municipality, Västerås. The casestudy has been performed using the ComBoxmodel. The years studiedare 1995 and 1998. The main sectors in society emitting nitrogento water were identified as the agricultural and householdsectors. The dominating sectors emitting nitrogen to air wereidentified as the agricultural, transport and infrastructuresectors.

As a basis for discussing data uncertainties qualitatively andquantitatively a literature survey was performed. 50 articles andbooks were identified as in some way or another dealing with datauncertainties in MFA. The literature survey showed that theuncertainties for results from a MFA study might vary between±30 % and a factor 10 depending on what kind of parameter isinvestigated. Only one method was found that dealt with datauncertainties in MFA in a complete way; a model developed byHedbrant and Sörme (HS model).

When applying the HS model to the case study of nitrogen flowsin Västerås, it was found that when uncertaintyintervals were calculated the possible conclusions changed. Ofthe two pair of flows compared in relation to priority setting, none of the earlier conclusions remained. Of the three flowsanalysed in relation to following up, only the flow from onepoint source supported the same conclusion when uncertainty wasconsidered.

In all, it is concluded that data uncertainties in MFAanalysis are an important aspect and that further research isneeded in order to improve input data quality estimations andframeworks for determining, calculating and presenting data, datauncertainties and results from MFA studies. However, theunderlying reality remains, e.g. that management of materialflows are important for understanding and reducing the negativeenvironmental impact. Thus, MFA is one useful tool in thiswork.

Abstract:
The International fragmentation of production processes is of rising importance. One part of this fragmentation involves the relocation of a production process from a home- to a new host country. This literature survey deals with the effects of such relocations on the home country. First of all, we try to conceptualize the terms and definitions most frequently used in this context which are "outsourcing", "offshore outsourcing" and "offshoring". Despite the fact that there is little textual documentation dealing directly with the phenomena of offshoring and offshore outsourcing we try to give an overview of possible empirical literature to which one can regard to. Including FDI literature we try to cover empirical literature which can provide helpful insight on the effects of a relocation to foreign countries on the home country in connection with wages, skill upgrading, prices, profits, taxes and unions. Ilyas, Bilal, and Islam Elkhalifa. "Static Code Analysis: A Systematic Literature Review and an Industrial Survey." Thesis, Blekinge Tekniska Högskola, Institutionen för programvaruteknik, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:bth-12871.

Full text
Abstract:
Context: Static code analysis is a software verification technique that refers to the process of examining code without executing it in order to capture defects in the code early, avoiding later costly fixations. The lack of realistic empirical evaluations in software engineering has been identified as a major issue limiting the ability of research to impact industry and in turn preventing feedback from industry that can improve, guide and orient research. Studies emphasized rigor and relevance as important criteria to assess the quality and realism of research. The rigor defines how adequately a study has been carried out and reported, while relevance defines the potential impact of the study on industry. Despite the importance of static code analysis techniques and its existence for more than three decades, the number of empirical evaluations in this field are less in number and do not take into account the rigor and relevance into consideration. Objectives: The aim of this study is to contribute toward bridging the gap between static code analysis research and industry by improving the ability of research to impact industry and vice versa. This study has two main objectives. First, developing guidelines for researchers, which will explore the existing research work in static code analysis research to identify the current status, shortcomings, rigor and industrial relevance of the research, reported benefits/limitations of different static code analysis techniques, and finally, give recommendations to researchers to help improve the future research to make it more industrial oriented. Second, developing guidelines for practitioners, which will investigate the adoption of different static code analysis techniques in industry and identify benefits/limitations of these techniques as perceived by industrial professionals. Then cross-analyze the findings of the SLR and the surbvey to draw final conclusions, and finally, give recommendations to professionals to help them decide which techniques to adopt. Methods: A sequential exploratory strategy characterized by the collection and analysis of qualitative data (systematic literature review) followed by the collection and analysis of quantitative data (survey), has been used to conduct this research. In order to achieve the first objective, a thorough systematic literature review has been conducted using Kitchenham guidelines. To achieve the second study objective, a questionnaire-based online survey was conducted, targeting professionals from software industry in order to collect their responses regarding the usage of different static code analysis techniques, as well as their benefits and limitations. The quantitative data obtained was subjected to statistical analysis for the further interpretation of the data and draw results based on it. Results: In static code analysis research, inspection and static analysis tools received significantly more attention than the other techniques. The benefits and limitations of static code analysis techniques were extracted and seven recurrent variables were used to report them. The existing research work in static code analysis field significantly lacks rigor and relevance and the reason behind it has been identified. Somre recommendations are developed outlining how to improve static code analysis research and make it more industrial oriented. From the industrial point of view, static analysis tools are widely used followed by informal reviews, while inspections and walkthroughs are rarely used. The benefits and limitations of different static code analysis techniques, as perceived by industrial professionals, have been identified along with the influential factors. Conclusions: The SLR concluded that the techniques having a formal, well-defined process and process elements have receive more attention in research, however, this doesn’t necessarily mean that technique is better than the other techniques. The experiments have been used widely as a research method in static code analysis research, but the outcome variables in the majority of the experiments are inconsistent. The use of experiments in academic context contributed nothing to improve the relevance, while the inadequate reporting of validity threats and their mitigation strategies contributed significantly to poor rigor of research. The benefits and limitations of different static code analysis techniques identified by the SLR could not complement the survey findings, because the rigor and relevance of most of the studies reporting them was weak. The survey concluded that the adoption of static code analysis techniques in the industry is more influenced by the software life-cycle models in practice in organizations, while software product type and company size do not have much influence. The amount of attention a static code analysis technique has received in research doesn’t necessarily influence its adoption in industry which indicates a wide gap between research and industry. However, the company size, product type, and software life-cycle model do influence professionals perception on benefits and limitations of different static code analysis techniques.

Abstract:
Context: Despite continuously increasing importance of Agile and Lean in software development, the number of studies that investigate on use of metrics relevant to Agile or Lean are limited and yet few studies implements was unclear. Unclear is which are the prominent metrics that are useful in industries, and their purpose of usage. Objectives: Main goal of this study is to find the metrics useful in Agile and Lean practicing industries; that are evaluated in industries by systematically identifying all the metrics from empirical evidence found in Literature as well as verifying which of them are prominently being used in industries. In addition, the purpose of using these metrics in industries are reported, and causes for dissatisfaction on use of some of the identified metrics among surveyed companies are investigated and reported. Methods: Two research methodologies are used; Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and Industrial Survey. SLR is performed using snowballing as search approach to select primary studies. SLR is used to identify all the metrics that are useful for Agile and Lean software development. Rigor and relevance analysis is performed to assess the quality of the resulted primary studies. Industrial survey was conducted in order to verify and extend the empirical evidence exists in Literature regarding metrics by finding which of them are more prominently being used. Moreover causes for dissatisfaction over outcome of metrics use for process improvements were observed by performing comparative analysis between unsatisfied respondents results and satisfied respondents results. Results: In total 20 metrics were identified from the studies having high rigor and high relevance. Moreover 11 out of these 20 metrics were identified to be prominently being used in industries using survey and other 9 metrics are found useful for Agile or Lean methods but need more awareness. Evidence from both SLR and survey shows that most of these identified or potential metrics are used for time associated purposes which are predictability, tracking, forecasting or planning, and very little evidence found for metrics that are being used directly for quality purpose. It was observed that some of the surveyed respondents who answered not satisfied with the metrics being used are not aware of the potential benefits these metrics can offer in Agile or Lean settings. Conclusion: Evidence from both SLR and survey shows that the identified 20 metrics are very important and useful for Agile or Lean methods. 11 out of these 20 metrics are prominently being used by industries and evidence shows for other 9 metrics are also useful for Agile but needs more awareness for industries to realize their potential benefits in large scale. Also, more evidence is found for metrics that are used for time related purposes which are being dominant and important in industries than quality focused metrics. Therefore, it is important for industries not only to know which metrics are appropriate for Agile or Lean but also to have a deep understating of metrics behaviors. This will help to realize the level predictability these metric’s offer in order to make right assumptions or planning.

Van, Niekerk Lydia Mary. "Personality changes after complex trauma : a literature survey and case study." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52994.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A century of clinical observations and literature has repeatedly noted that trauma responses occur in across a spectrum and on a continuum of severity. The existing, DSMIV trauma response classifications include Acute Stress Disorder and PTSD as anxiety disorders. Complex PTSD or DESNOS was considered as a proposed, alternative classification during the DSM-IV PTSD Field Trials. It was not included as a separate diagnosis, but briefly mentioned as an associated feature ofPTSD. Subsequent research and replica studies have not proved conclusively whether Complex PTSD should be a separate or associated feature ofPTSD, and the controversy continues to date. Childhood traumatization is strongly associated with adult psychopathology, and various Axis I and Axis II disorders, especially Borderline Personality Disorder, and to a lesser extent, Antisocial Personality Disorder. Prolonged, repeated traumatization during adulthood is also associated with subsequent Axis II pathology, including Borderline, Obsessive-Compulsive and Avoidant Personality Disorders. Chronically traumatized people with Axis II pathology often present with comorbid Axis I disorders including Major Depression, PTSD, Substance Abuse, Somatization Disorder, and Dissociative Disorders. There are divergent views regarding the etiology of personality disorders in chronically traumatized individuals. On the one hand, repeated, prolonged trauma could cause enduring personality dysfunction in individuals despite normal premorbid functioning. On the other hand, genetics, temperament, environmental factors and even a pre-existing stress diathesis in the pre-trauma personality could contribute to the development of post-trauma personality disorders. These two views do not necessary contradict each other, but illustrate the complexity the human stress reaction. Despite the controversy the inclusion of DESNOS into the diagnostic canon, it is a valuable measure of predicting prognosis to existing treatment options. The present main psychological treatment for post-traumatic stress disorders has been a cognitive-behavioral based, exposure intervention. Alternative therapies include psychodynamic approaches, pastoral interventions and more recently, ecological and recovery based models. The Complex PTSD conceptualization contributes to a better understanding of the personality structure of chronically traumatized people. There are three main areas of disturbance. Firstly, a complex symptomatic presentation including somatization, dissociation, and affect dysregulation. Secondly, deep characterological shifts including deformations in concepts of relatedness and identity. Thirdly, and increased vulnerability to harm, either self-inflicted or at the hands of others. The usefulness of integrating these three concepts into the personality conceptualization of chronically traumatized individuals is illustrated a case study.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die literatuur en kliniese waarneming vand die afgelope eeu dui herhaaldelik op trauma reaksies oor 'n spektrum. In die bestaande DSM-IV stelsel, val trauma reaksies net Akute Stress Steuring and Post-Traumatiese Stress Steuring. Abstract:
Context and Motivation: Technology play a vital role in the people’s present life. These technology has different types of softwares and devices. Now a days people mostly live around the digital devices and involve with them. These softwares when using causes digital distraction. Mostly digital distraction occurs only when using digital devices. For the development of software and devices requirements play a major role in the development in an organization. Question/Problem: The requirements are developed into the features of software. These features when using can cause distraction. So to manage these digital distraction causing by the software, we considered requirements engineering, by introducing the requirements engineering process at the beginning of the development of software, so to develop a distraction-free software. This can be helpful for the developers to develop the distraction-free software from early stages for the user. Principal Ideas/Objectives: Our thesis mainly focus on the identification of quality factors requirements contributing to the digital distraction and analyse them and we also tried to identify feature usage and user experience of software to identify distraction of software and a mind-map is designed for the study of digital distraction. So that these can provide useful information for future studies. Methods/Contributions: In our thesis study, we conducted Systematic Literature Review using snowballing process for the identification of the literature about the digital distraction and analysed the SLR. Further an online survey is conducted on Instagram users to extract distraction features and reasons for distraction and then we used this data to plan a mind-map of different categories contributing to digital distraction. Results: The main findings and observations in our research are observed through SLR and survey results. For research question 1, the data that is extracted through SLR gives quality factor requirements that contribute to the digital distraction. An understanding of digital distraction among software and feature and also the causes are observed. For the research question 2, the data from the survey is collected from the users of Instagram are observed. The results from the survey are extracted to know about the distraction of software using the feature usage which is extracted from the survey and also the user experience. From these results of SLR and survey data, a mind map is designed to know about the study of the digital distraction. Conclusions: Finally, we come up with a idea by planning mind-map that helps the software developers and requirement engineers to build a distraction-free software. The results of this study can be helpful to all the software developers and also to the ones who want to carry our the research on requirements connection with digital distraction, this can be a start point for them.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a critical survey of Mauritian literature written in English between 1900 and 2000. It covers the four different genres of the novel, the short story, poetry and drama. It aims to place the writing produced over this span of time within the social, historical and cultural context of production. Throughout, I have used the Structuralist construct that authors can only begin to shape themselves into being as authors within the existing discursive literary structures which exist at a specific point in time. It is argued therefore that the strong imitative bent of most of the writing here studied originates from this structuralist determination of authorial identity. However, the authors show their originality by hybridising these discursive genres with alternative cultural influences, emanating from their specific socio-cultural and temporal location In this context I trace the effect of British Colonial Literary pedagogy, as it was developed for India and implemented in British colonies. This substantially contributed to shape the sense of English Literature for the first generation of writers of the novel and for poets. In addition, writers in Mauritius were functioning within a local context where language use was associated with ethnic appurtenance, thus English was appropriated to counteract the elitist tendencies of French and Francophone culture on the island. Thus caught between the elitism of French and the bias of English pedagogy, Mauritian writers in English have remained fairly fixated in conventional notions of canonical genres. This is applicable for all the three major genres: the novel, poetry and drama. It has to be highlighted though, that in the case of drama the forms which have wielded the greatest influence on the dramatists is European and American drama. But, as in the case of the novel and poetry, these authors still function within the same schema of imitation as they reproduce the genres. Innovation can be traced to the new writing of short story writers who have published in a series of anthologies since 1990. This is the focus of my last chapter.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a plan for an archaeological survey of the ancient Greek city of Tegea, in Arcadia. Excavations at the temple of Athena Alea in Tegea have uncovered evidence of cult practice that extends into the tenth century BC, which provides the basis for further archaeological investigation. An archaeological survey would connect known developments within the religious sphere to developments in the social and political spheres of the surrounding territory. The survey will be an intensive, pedestrian, and all-period survey, will follow the methodology of the Cambridge/Bradford Boeotian Expedition, and will use computer databases and GIS. From the diachronic changes in settlement pattern discovered, we can infer the answers to questions regarding the social, political and economic structures in all periods from the Neolithic to modern times. The materials collected by the survey will provide opportunities for research beyond their immediate usefulness to the survey itself.

A negative-sloped Treasury curve is often cited in financial news articles and by Federal Reserve economists as a predictor of recessions. This report reviews previously published research examining the reliability of yield curves predicting recessions. Findings show that the yield curve inverts two or more quarters before recessions, with short-term interest rates rising above long-term interest rates. Probit regression has proven a reliable method for generating estimated probabilities of future recessions that, in turn, are useful for both monetary policy and asset allocation decision-making.

Abstract:
Introduction: Stress and stress related diseases are pressing issues in today’s society. The proportion of stressed teenagers in Sweden are high. 30 % of girls in school year 4-9 and 23 % of boys at the same age indicates stress. 40 % of girls in school year 2 in high school indicates stress and 20 % of the boys at the same age. The reason for it is school related demands and homework. The aim: The aim of this study was to investigate if there is a gender difference in perceived stress in Sweden, Denmark and Norway among teenagers.Method: This study is a literature survey. Databases such as PubMed, PsycINFO, Sociological abstracts, Social Services Abstracts and Medline were used to find studies. To be able to choose studies with a high quality we used a grading template.Result: Both girls and boys indicate a high perceived stress. A higher proportion of girls than boys. Girls also indicated a higher level of demands from achievements and a lower degree of self-esteem.Conclusion: It is difficult to reach a conclusion about what impact the gender has on the teenagers’ health or lack of it, and how much that can be explained by biological factors. However, girls and boys have different expectations and demands of the society, which may create a higher level of stress amongst girls.

Abstract:
A growing uncertainty in the global economy is forcing many manufacturers to reassess their corporate outlook towards the environment. Today there is a growing attention to sustainability in industry accompanied by a paradigm shift towards realizing a sustainable society. It is now very common to hear about Green Production and Green Systems, but few literature exist that deal with the relatively newer subject of Green Maintenance. The term green production is often used to describe production with a sustainable perspective. Also, lean production has been proposed as a means of achieving sustainability. Lean and Green production systems require efficient production and low use of resources such as energy, materials, etc. One major facilitator of this is effective maintenance. Sometimes regarded as the necessary evil, maintenance still has a negative image in the industry. But as the paradigm on manufacturing shift towards realizing a sustainable society, we should also begin to realize the changing role of maintenance. Still, the impact of maintenance on sustainability and Green production is not very well described in research.   This Master Thesis within the School of Innovation Design and Engineering at Mälardalen University presents a literature review on green maintenance by trying to identify and assess the key factors of maintenance effects on green production, life cycle assessment and sustainability of maintenance activities. In addition, a brief introduction to the greening of remanufacturing activity, part of a green process by itself, is provided. The research is based upon extensive literature study, questionnaire survey and interviews with relevant industry as well as academic personnel. A discussion of the results of the interview followed by a conclusion on the key factors of maintenance on sustainability is provided. Future research areas have also been suggested.       Keywords: Green maintenance, Production maintenance, Sustainable maintenance,     Total Productive Maintenance

Abstract:
Introduction: Maternal smoking during pregnancy is becoming less common. However, it is still a significant predictor of adverse outcomes. Smoking during pregnancy has been associated with impaired fetal development and growth. The purpose of this systematic litera-ture study was to describe the placental molecular targets that have been identified as poten-tially affected by maternal smoking, with emphasis on alterations in placental gene expres-sion. Objective: To decribe the impact of maternal smoking on mRNA expression in placental tissue. Design: Systematic literature survey Methods: We searched for studies in PubMed. To be included in the survey the studies had to be written in English and asses mRNA expression in isolated placental cells, animal, or hu-man placental tissue in conjunction with exposure to some or all elements of tobacco smoke. Out of 54 studies found, 14 met the eligibility criteria. One reviewer assessed the eligibility and quality of the studies. Results: Eight studies investigated human placental tissue, two investigated rodent placental tissue, and five studies investigated isolated placental cells. Two studies profiled the global gene expression, while the other studies examined the expression of the CYP genes, or genes involved in angiogenic regulation, cellular proliferation, or amino acid metabolism and transport in relation to cigarette smoking. Discussion: We conclude that even though the influence of cigarette smoking on gene expres-sion in placenta has only been investigated in a few studies, they all found transcriptional al-terations in relation to smoke exposure. Future investigations are necessary for the examina-tion of how these changes may impact fetal development and growth.

Full text
Abstract:
Tax rates on capital income, corporate income tax rates in particular, have been declining in most industrialized countries since the mid 1980ies. Among the explanations for this development tax competition between countries for mobile capital has been mentioned frequently. A vast empirical literature dealing with tax competition for mobile capital has emerged. This paper gives a comprehensive overview of these empirical studies. A particular focus is put on studies modelling strategic interaction in tax policies of competing jurisdictions - which is at the heart of the competition concept. The paper also addresses the issue whether existing studies convincingly isolate tax competition as a driver of falling capital / corporate income tax rates. Given the empirical evidence surveyed it appears that tax rates indeed fall due to tax competition, in particular due to competition for new firms and for paper profits. However, closer look at the empirical approaches applied in the papers surveyed suggests that fully convincing evidence establishing tax competition as driver of falling tax rates is still lacking.

Full text
Abstract:
Context: In the requirements engineering phase, requirements elicitation is considered as the most important task as it is the initial phase in which the requirements are gathered and prioritised. Changes in requirements may lead to project failure or delay in project deliveries. So, it is essential to elicit the requirements at the early stage to avoid changes in requirements in the later stage of development. Therefore, there is a need to study the impact of volatility in elicitation techniques to gather requirements appropriately in the early stages. Objectives: In the present thesis, we focused on the analysis of the requirements volatility in the requirement elicitation phase. The main objectives we have formulated to achieve our goal are Objective 1: To identify and determine the various causes of requirement volatility. Objective 2: To examine the impact of requirement volatility in the requirement elicitation process. Objective 3: To examine whether the procedure of elicitation techniques differ if volatility occurs while eliciting the requirements. Methods: In this thesis, we have implemented a Systematic Literature Review(SLR) and Survey research methods in order to attain our aim and objectives. SLR is performed for objective 1, to receive the data about the causes of volatility in various development life cycle phases. A survey is conducted to identify the causes of volatility in all phases of development, in the elicitation phase, and check whether the process of elicitation techniques differ if volatility occurs while eliciting the requirements. Results: From the SLR and survey, numerous factors of causes of volatility on the software development lifecycle were identified. Several new factors were identified from both the research methods. The factors have its own interpretation for the cause of volatility. Moreover, from the survey results, we can determine that the volatility occurs in the elicitation phase and has a huge impact while eliciting the requirements. Most of the practitioners working with the agile development process and waterfall model have stated that the impact of volatility results in prolonging the elicitation phase, slowing down the project, etc. Conclusions: For this research, our contribution is to provide insights on the impact of volatility in the elicitation process and check whether the elicitation techniques and its process change due to volatility. Based on the results of the respondents, we can conclude that the elicitation techniques procedure change is not intentional and not only because of the volatility but also due to some external factors while eliciting the requirements.

Abstract:
In this study, the Eucharist as a liturgical ritual celebrated in the online space is explored. The study begins with an exploration of the terms worship, liturgy and ritual, settling on the term liturgical ritual. The methodology of practical theological interpretation is then considered, with the first step, the descriptive-empirical task being undertaken. The conceptual framework for the study is located within the postmodern discourse of liminality, using the metaphors of language, play, bricolage, embodiment, time and space to explore the intersection of liturgical ritual, network culture and liminality. A literature survey considers the research completed in the area of online ritual, and highlights two major themes, those of embodiment and community, which challenge the Eucharist online becoming a reality.

Abstract:
This thesis attempts to investigate EFL literature teaching in Italian high schools. Our work consists of three parts. Part 1 aims at providing the theoretical framework literature teaching belongs to. Firstly, we focused on the concept and the aims of literary education. Then, we moved on to discuss the pedagogical roles that teachers and students play in the learning process. Lastly, we commented on the main methodological principles currently informing literature teaching. Part 2 is concerned with the research we conducted. In order to collect data, we devised two questionnaires which were administered to a sample of high school students and teachers. Data show that EFL literature appears to be an instrument for both language learning and cultural enrichment. However, EFL literature teaching seems to be primarily concerned with British classics, hingeing upon a traditional historico-chronological approach. Eventually, part 3 puts forward a teaching proposal which we devised in the light of the theoretical framework we discussed in part 1 and the results of the questionnaires we analysed in part 2.

Abstract:
Context: Requirements change commonly occurs during the software development lifecycle. Requirements traceability is one of the important techniques to support requirement change management and analysis, ensure quality and keep requirements consistent during development. We find that existing research mentioned various issues and challenges during practicing requirements traceability, and the practitioners show certain obstacles on the subject. Major existing work of the area focuses on requirements traceability processes, frameworks, and techniques to address certain issues accordingly. And we want to focus on and investigate the existing challenges to practice requirements traceability systematically. Method: We investigate the requirements traceability and its challenges through a systematic literature review (SLR) of various concepts and existing challenges of requirements traceability, and a survey of 7 Chinese small-and-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). With 7 interviews, we studied different traceability practices and situations with the surveyed companies under the possible impact of requirement change, development processes, tools, and other factors. And then we conducted conventional qualitative content analysis to identify and classify the challenges in practicing requirements traceability. Results: With the systematic literature review, we classified 14 categories of academic identified challenges. Through the collected data of the survey, we identified and discussed 6 categories of the requirement traceability challenges, involving costs, tools, awareness, documentation, etc. And we compared and discussed the connections and differences of the survey results with the literature for validation of our survey results and possible extension to the existing work. Through research, we may help the practitioners to deal with requirements change with traceability practice better by recognizing and preventing the obstacles. Our research may provide researchers with more information on practical situations. And in the future, researchers may study the traceability models more effectively aiming at addressing the existing problems.

Abstract:
In recent years there has been an increasing interest in understanding how organizations can utilize big data in their process management to create value and improve their processes. This is due to new challenges for process management which have arisen from increasing competition and the complexity of large data sets due to technological advancements. These large data sets have been described by scholars as big data which involves data that are so complex traditional data analysis software are not sufficient in managing or analyzing them. Because of the complexity of handling such great volumes of data there is a big gap in practical examples where organizations have incorporated big data in their process management. Therefore, in order to fill relevant gaps and contribute to advancements in this field, this thesis will explore how big data can contribute to improved process management. Hence, the aim of this thesis entailed investigating how, why and to what extent big data is used in process management. As well as to outline the purpose and challenges of using big data in process management. This was accomplished through a literature review and a survey, respectively, in order to understand how big data had previously been used to create value and improve processes in organizations. From the extensive literature review, an analysis matrix of how big data is used in process management is provided through the intersections between big data and process management dimensions. The analysis matrix showed that most of the instances in which big data was used in process management were in process analysis & improvement and process control & agility. Simply put, organizations used big data in specific activities involved in process management but not in a holistic manner. Furthermore, the limited findings from the survey indicate that the main challenges and purposes of big data use in Swedish organizations are the complexity of handling data and making statistically better decisions, respectively.

Duffett, Lisa. "Management of Superficial Venous Thrombosis: A Systematic Review of Literature and Survey of Canadian Physicians." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/37105.

Full text
Abstract:
Superficial venous thrombosis (SVT) is a common inflammatory and thrombotic pathology occurring within a superficial vein. SVT can result in distressing symptoms of redness and pain in the affected area and exposes patients to a risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Various therapeutic options are available to patients including anti-inflammatories, anti-coagulation and surgical procedures, however which of these therapies is the best first line treatment remains unknown. Several randomized controlled trials have been conducted addressing this question, yet methodological and design flaws have limited the translation of their results into a change of clinical practice. The following thesis consists of a multi-step process of reviewing the evidence to date followed by a process of engaging with clinician stakeholders with the goal of designing a randomized control trial that would provide a meaningful answer to patients and their clinicians. In the first step of this process, a systematic review of the literature was performed, including a meta-analysis to estimate pooled risk of developing symptomatic venous thromboembolic (VTE) complications in patients with isolated SVT following various treatments. These results were then presented to expert Canadian clinicians in a series of surveys using a Delphi process to determine the clinical trial design that would have the greatest impact on changing clinical practice. An additional survey of expert clinicians was conducted to determine current practice variation in the diagnosis, management, and follow up of patients with SVT, in order to design a clinical trial that best reflected current standard Canadian clinical practice. Our systematic review identified 15 articles and including 5775 patients. Quality and assessment of risk of bias was moderate for most included studies. The findings of our meta-analysis identified that Fondaparinux, at prophylactic dose, to had the lowest event rate of 2.0 events per 100 patient years of follow-up (95% CI 0.4 to 4.7, I2=33%) for the primary outcome of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE) during follow-up. Pooled event rates ranged from 8.6-16.6 events per 100 patient-years across other treatment categories, including placebo/observation only, with an event rate of 10.5 events per 100-patient years (95% CI 3.0 to 22.0). Heterogeneity was moderate to high for most pooled estimates, limiting the interpretation of these findings. Our survey of practice variation among expert Canadian clinicians revealed wide practice variation in in diagnosis and therapeutic management including sub-groups (e.g. cancer). There was agreement that clinical equipoise exists for the optimal treatment of SVT (77% of respondents), supporting the need for further research. Two rounds of surveys were performed using Delphi process methods, resulting in consensus for the design of a future randomized control trial (RCT). The agreed on design was for a randomized control trial comparing a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) such as Rivaroxaban, to Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories (NSAIDs), using a non-inferiority RCT design with a non-inferiority margin of 3%. Future direction of this research will be to continue stakeholder engagement by engaging patients in the clinical trial design, followed by development of a pilot RCT protocol and application for peer-reviewed funding.

Abstract:

Natural selection, the driving force behind evolution, acts on individual phenotypes. Phenotypes are the result of an individual’s genotype, but the development from genotype to phenotype is not always accurate and precise. Developmental instability (DI: random perturbations in the microenvironment during development) can result in a phenotype that misses its genetic target. In the current study I assert that developmental instability may itself be an evolvable trait. Here I present evidence for DI’s heritability, selectability, and phenotypic variation in the form of empirical data and evidence from the literature from the years 2006 through 2016. Phenotypic variation contributed by DI was estimated using fluctuating asymmetry and was found to contribute up to 60% of the phenotypic variation in certain trait types. I suggest that selection against developmental instability in some traits may result in higher evolvabilities (i.e., rates of evolution) for those traits or for entire taxonomic groups.

Stagl, Sigrid. "Delinking economic growth from environmental degradation? A literature survey on the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis." Inst. für Volkswirtschaftstheorie und -politik, WU Vienna University of Economics and Business, 1999. http://epub.wu.ac.at/1490/1/document.pdf.

Abstract:
The effect of economic growth on environmental quality is much under dispute. A number of empirical studies have made the claim that there exists in some income ranges a positive relation between per capita income and some measure of environmental quality. According to this inverted U-shaped pattern of different pollutants relative to per capita incomes in different countries which is also called the "Environmental Kuznets Curve" (EKC), environmental pressure increases up to a point as income goes up; after the turning point environmental quality improves as income keeps rising. Possible explanations for this pattern are seen in the progression of economic development, from clean agrarian economies to polluting industrial economies to clean service economies. This trend is enhanced through the transfer of cleaner technology from high-income countries to low-income countries and the tendency of people with higher income having a higher preference for environmental quality. Since this relationship is so fundamental to questions of economic development and sustainability it has provoked a vast load of research over the last seven years supporting but also heavily criticizing the results and conclusions. This paper gives an overview of the literature published on this topic to date and the conceptual, methodological and fundamental critique put forward. (author's abstract)

McMahon, Thomas. "Aboriginal people and discrimination in the justice system: A survey of Manitoba inmates and related literature." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/6859.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis examines how the criminal justice system treats Aboriginal people. While the survey is principally concerned with examining evidence of systemic discrimination, it points out from the beginning that an ineffective justice system needs reform even if it is fair in all respects. I believe the present justice system generally does not protect Aboriginal victims and communities, and intrudes excessively into the lives of offenders without realizing substantial benefits. The thesis concludes that discrimination against Aboriginal persons is widespread in the criminal justice system, and that the system is not serving Aboriginal people well, whether as victims, offenders, or communities. One of the recommendations proposed is for the establishment of Aboriginal justice systems, including criminal law-making powers. Other recommendations are directed at that part of the justice system that will always be governed within the present jurisdictional structures, and calls for blunt measures to make the justice system more effective in protecting victims and reducing discrimination against Aboriginal persons. The thesis concludes that the problems with the justice system are fundamental and in many ways involve inherent contradictions in its operation. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
Context: Today’s software development industry requires high-speed software delivery from the development team. In order to do this, organizations make transformation from their conventional software development method to agile development method while preserving customer satisfaction. Even though this approach is becoming popular development method, from security point of view, it has some disadvantage. Because, this method has several constraints imposed such as lack of a complete overview of a product, higher development pace and lack of documentation. Although security-engineering (SE) process is necessary in order to build secure software, no SE process is developed specifically for agile model. As a result, SE processes that are commonly used in waterfall model are being used in agile models. However, there is a clash or disparity between the established waterfall SE processes and the ideas and methodologies proposed by the agile manifesto. This means that, while agile models work with short development increments that adapt easily to change, the existing SE processes work in plan-driven development setting and try to reduce defects found in a program before the occurrence of threats through heavy and inflexible process. This study aims at bridging the gap in agile model and security by providing insightful understanding of the SE process that are used in the current agile industry. Objectives: The objectives of this thesis are to identify and evaluate security activities from high-profile waterfall SE-process that are used in the current agile industry. Then, to suggest the most compatible and beneficial security activities to agile model based on the study results. Methods: The study involved two approaches: systematic literature review and survey. The systematic literature review has two main aims. The first aim is to gain a comprehensive understanding of security in an agile process model; the second one is to identify high-profile SE processes that are commonly used in waterfall model. Moreover, it helped to compare the thesis result with other previously done works on the area. A survey is conducted to identify and evaluate waterfall security activities that are used in the current agile industry projects. The evaluation criteria were based on the security activity integration cost and benefit provides to agile projects. Results: The results of the systematic review are organized in a tabular form for clear understanding and easy analysis. High-profile SE processes and their activities are obtained. These results are used as an input for the survey study. From the survey study, security activities that are used in the current agile industry are identified. Furthermore, the identified security activities are evaluated in terms of benefit and cost. As a result the best security activities, that are compatible and beneficial, are investigated to agile process model. Conclusions: To develop secure software in agile model, there is a need of SE-process or practice that can address security issues in every phase of the agile project lifecycle. This can be done either by integrating the most compatible and beneficial security activities from waterfall SE processes with agile process or by creating new SE-process. In this thesis, it has been found that, from the investigated high-profile waterfall SE processes, none of the SE processes was fully compatible and beneficial to agile projects.

Dahl, Ian Carl, and Ian Carl Dahl. "Barbarians as Romans: A Survey of the Presentation of Western Barbarians in Trajanic Literature and Art." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/625313.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper examines how the monuments and literature during the reign of Trajan imbue the portrayals of westerns barbarians with Roman-like qualities in order to create sympathetic barbarian characters. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate that both imperial monuments and authors employed these presentations of Roman-like barbarians for political purposes. In order to achieve this goal, the portrayals of barbarians found both major imperial monuments at Rome and in the literature of Trajanic authors, such as the Column of Trajan and the historian Tacitus, are examined. The portrayal of barbarians in imperial monuments primarily serves to portray Trajan as virtuous ruler. The authors Frontinus and Pliny similarly use Roman-like barbarians in their works to glorify Trajan. The historian Tacitus employs Roman-like barbarians to criticize the morals of Rome during the reign of past emperors, namely Nero and Domitian. By examining these thematic similarities between the monuments and the authors of the time of Trajan, this paper demonstrates the importance of the portrayals of barbarians in politically charged art and literature of the time and the attentiveness the authors had towards the political stances of the principate.
