Abstract:
This chapter examines the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), a new peer-review procedure that provides scrutiny of each UN member state’s human rights record every five years. The review process culminates in a set of recommendations issued to each “State-under-Review” (SuR). The UPR provides an unprecedented opportunity to routinely hold all states to account for their obligations under international human rights law, including health-related human rights. Health recommendations have featured prominently in the recommendations issued to SuRs and have a comparatively high implementation rate. Empirical data indicate that the UPR could have a potentially, or already, important role in holding states to account for health-related human rights as well as political global health commitments, such as those found in the Sustainable Development Goals. However, certain shortcomings should be addressed, including an uneven spread of recommendations across different health issues and limited engagement of the public health community.

Thorsteinsson, Runar M. Jesus as Philosopher in the Gospel of Mark. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198815228.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter discusses the following aspects of the question of Jesus as philosopher in the Gospel of Mark: ascetic appearance, abandoning one’s family, attitude towards material possessions and outward appearance, Jesus and the philosophers as messengers of God, the wisdom of Jesus, the philosopher’s emotions, and the philosopher’s suffering and death. It is concluded that, in many respects, the figure of Jesus is consistent with contemporary philosophical figures, especially the Stoics, as regards his reported words and deeds. To be sure, there are some minor differences, particularly as regards the feelings of Jesus and the philosopher. In this case, Jesus showed and expressed feelings, like grief and anger, that were not considered characteristic of philosophical figures in general. However, most other features dealt with suggest that Mark may have benefited from contemporary discussions of the philosophical sage.

Abstract:
Chapter 6 explores the issues of eyewitness accounts and testimony. In both legal disputes and for information about foreign countries great reliance was placed on the accounts of eyewitnesses. But how could anyone be sure that those who provided testimony were telling the truth? Reliable, honest testimony was central to questions of truth and lying and so features heavily in discussion in this period. The chapter explores a variety of cases such as the accounts given of the death of Robert Greene; the murder of Anthony James by Annis and George Dell; the case of the mysterious herring with lettering on its side, and the plots against Mary Queen of Scots, as well as the fictional account of issues about travel in Thomas Nashe’s The Unfortunate Traveller, to show how debates about truth and lies were undertaken.

Abstract:
This article examines ritual ordeals that inspire terror regardless of the participants' preexisting beliefs. In such traditions, the relationship between belief and emotion is more or less the converse of that entailed by fears of supernatural punishment. Fear is a major part of the psychological processes that give rise to the gradual formation of mystical knowledge. Focusing on terrifying rituals has the advantage of picking out a generalizable feature of religion—not a feature of all religions, to be sure, but a “mode of religiosity” that is probably as ancient as our species and is still found in every corner of the globe. Given the shocking nature of the rituals in question, it is not unreasonable to refer to these practices as “rites of terror.” Two strategies, broadly speaking, have been developed in an attempt to understand the nature and origins of rites of terror. The first strategy is sociological in orientation, while the second is a psychological one. This article also discusses the rituals, memories, and motivations associated with rites of terror.

Abstract:
Sports have become an international spectacle that influences nations’ foreign policy, world economies, and regional morale. Hundreds of billions of dollars are at stake as governments and multinational corporations rush to make sure they have a place at the table. And yet, sports come from humble beginnings. We are fascinated by who can run the fastest, lift the most weight, jump the highest, swim the farthest, and act with the most precision. The history of sports is the history of the world. Modern Sports around the World examines 50 of the world’s most popular sports. Each chapter features one sport and details that sport’s origins, global migration, economic forces, media influences, political environment, pop-culture inspirations, scandalous moments, and key individuals. Sports history is a tapestry of sociological variables; Modern Sports around the World weaves them together to create a unique history book that explains not only where humanity has been, but where it might be going.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 first addresses the regional refugee definition according to the 1969 Convention , beginning with a description of article I(2)’s international influence and an interpretation of the definition using orthodox methods. The context and object and purpose of the 1969 Convention are discussed, followed by analysis of the ‘every person’ term and each of the 1969 Events and the test for refugee status under article I(2), including a discussion of internal flight alternative, ongoing risk, and sur place claims. Section B then addresses how article I(2) has been invoked in practice. Section B also addresses prima facie refugee status determination. Section C covers further key features of the 1969 Convention: whether it advances an individual right to asylum; non-refoulement; the formalization of responsibility sharing, temporary protection, and voluntary repatriation; and the Convention’s prohibition of subversive activities. Section D concludes.

Abstract:
This chapter presents a commentary on François Ozon's entire film career to date. It suggests that despite tremendous diversity in terms of cinematic choices (on generic, formal, and thematic levels), Ozon's oeuvre is decidedly consistent in its desire to blur the traditional frontiers between the masculine and the feminine, gay and straight, reality and fantasy, auteur and commercial cinema. The moving fabrics mentioned above are a leitmotif that visually represents the permeability of those frontiers. The chapter begins by exploring the director's own path to filmmaking before considering the colorful cast of characters in the short films that Ozon wrote and directed between 1988 and 1998. It then moves on to an analysis of his feature films: Sitcom (1998), Les amants criminels (1999), 8 femmes (2002), Sous le sable (2000), Swimming Pool (2003), Le temps qui reste (2005), Gouttes d'eau sur pierres brûlantes (2000), 5x2 (2004), and Ricky (2009).

Abstract:
Abstract Descriptions of tremor encompass ancient civilizations to the present day. This book covers the increasingly rich and diverse research arena in tremors, and how research connects with improved recognition and treatment of tremors. The initial book sections cover fundamental concepts in tremor nosology and classification, pathophysiology, and etiology. “Tremor Foundations,” presents work across research modalities, providing an overview on the underpinnings of tremor as symptom and disease. Recent developments in the understanding of tremor pathology, pathophysiology, and genetics, spurred by new basic research and neuroimaging techniques, illustrate the breadth of immediate opportunity in tremor research. “The Family of Tremors” presents the extended range of tremors, spanning isolated tremors, tremor as one of several features of a neurological disorder or medical disease, and other hyperkinetic movement phenotypes commonly referred to, mimicking, or framed as tremors. The final section, “Tremor in the Clinic,” puts the fundamental concepts of the initial sections into clinical context. This section covers current and emerging frameworks for assessment, diagnosis, and holistic treatment of tremors, and the accelerating growth in new therapeutics development. All sections connect across key concepts in defining and working with tremors, illustrating how work in state-of-the-art clinical care feeds back into understanding causes of tremors and new therapeutics development. Tremor is one of the most common movement disorders. This dynamic, rich topic is sure to see continued rapid growth in research and clinical care options.

Abstract:
The essays for the Ascona Balint Award give a deep impression of the students’ experiences, reflections and conclusions. And they show an insight into medical education in different countries. “Mr. Mikheil was not just another assignment for me anymore, not an interview I had to ‘get over with’, he was a patient, a person, a human, worthy of respect. […] He taught me that medicine is an interplay of Expertise, Ethics and Empathy and as we are only chasing the ‘Expertise’ in medical sciences, the ‘Ethics’ and ‘Empathy’ are just as valuable […]. As the interview ended, I promised myself that I would learn the theories in lectures, and I would learn the humanism by the bedside; and only by the integration of the two will I be a humane healer.” Jill Kar “All of the above made me realize that people have the right to life, but they also have the right to die. It may seem counterintuitive to our fundamental duty as physicians to preserve and protect life, and might raise ethical and moral issues, and yet, one has autonomy over one’s own life. There’s no doubt that the medical staff must offer the best patient care and do everything in their power to provide support and maintain hope, but the final decision is in the patient’s hands. It can be a patient with aggressive cancer who refuses chemotherapy, for instance, or a patient signing a DNR order. We need to discuss patients’ preferences and choices with them, make sure they understand all their meanings and consequences, and if they do, we have no choice but to respect their decision.” Keren Meir “I have come to appreciate that one of the joys of medical school is that it provides a rich experiential milieu in which to learn both the science and the art of medicine. […] It is often unscheduled, unexpected encounters that can lead to the greatest personal and professional growth; I can certainly attest that my relationship with Ereuti taught me far more than any formal teaching could. These moments can also be the most confronting and the most challenging. […] Empowering students to draw on their human skills, supporting them to make sense of and grow from pivotal experiences, and facilitating the development of their unique approaches to the student-patient relationship, along with the confidence to adapt those approaches to the needs of different patients, may be key features of effective medical training.” Thomas SwinburnWith contributions by Madison Booth, Grace Borchert, Pedro Thadeu Mertens Brainer de Queiroz Lima, Chaninda Desjuba, Sahar Effati, Felix Flechtner, Amin Hatami, Alexios Iakovidis, Jill Kar, Christian Krätzig, Keren Meir, Johanna Pahl, Valmir Nascimento Rastely Junior, Re’em Sadeh, Felix Simpson-Orlebar and Thomas Swinburn.
