Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
There is continued confusion and controversy about the importance of perception versus actual exchange of social support, that I argue in this paper leads erroneously to the conclusion that it is perception that is key. This paper argues that this confusion follows from the lack of study of the time sequence by which social support, and therefore its perception, is accumulated. Unless people are delusional, social support and its appraisal are created primarily as a product of real events in their lives. Most research comparing “perceived” and “received” social support actually compares perceptions of reality that have accumulated over long spans of time to a micro exchange of received support. Further, I illustrate that when social support does not behave as people expected (i.e., there are misperceptions) then people's belief systems about their support change, but, again, based on the facts. In this way, people are depicted as active operators in the support process, such that they make ongoing adjustments in their beliefs and in their actual social support by creating new relationships and how they interact in these relationships so that perceptions and reality match.

Abstract:

This study examines the associations among financial hardship, perception of situation, social support, and perceived stress using data from the second wave of the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States. Both financial hardship and perception of situation were hypothesized to be positively associated with perceived stress, whereas social support was hypothesized to act as an intervening variable between perception of situation and perceived stress. The results from a structural equation model showed that (a) financial hardship was a precursor of perception of situation, (b) perception of situation exhibited a positive effect on perceived stress, and (c) social support was negatively related to the level of perceived stress.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim in this study was to determine the effect of certain sociocontextual variables on the level of perceived spousal support. Family members are the most significant source of social support for an individual throughout his or her life. Spouses' mutual support in a marital relationship, however, seems to be particularly important compared to other sources of social support. We interviewed 579 randomly selected married individuals in Ankara, Turkey. They responded to the Spousal Support Scale and completed the personal information form that included individual and family data. Results showed a significant relationship between the level of perceived spousal support and a variety of sociocontextual factors such as number of children, length of marriage, form of marriage, and income level. Theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed.

Abstract:
This descriptive and cross-sectional study aimed to measure social support among subjects hospitalized for surgical treatment of cardiac diseases and to verify the relations between social support and socio-demographic variables. Data were collected between May, 2004 and June, 2005. A total of 86 patients were studied, 47 men, 58 married and the average age was 53 years old. Regarding social support, in an interval from 1 to 5, we found an average of 4.2+0.74 (interval of 1.92 to 5) for the emotional support and 4.2+0.6 (interval of 2.3 to 5) for the instrumental support, which indicate high satisfaction and availability of received supports. We found weak but statistically significant correlations between instrumental and emotional supports and the participants' age and between instrumental support and years of education. We did not find any differences in the perception of social support in terms of participants' gender and marital status.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract The article describes a research study focused on determining the level of social support for innovative activities. Based on a questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews conducted among engineers working in the United States and in Poland, data was obtained to determine the level of social acceptance and the level of support from third parties and institutions encouraging innovative activities. Conducting a comparative analysis of innovation support in the United States and Poland made it possible to learn about the social climate strengthening and inhibiting innovative behavior in both countries. An important element in the aspect of social acceptance is the perception of innovation from the perspective of corporate social responsibility, responsibility of business leaders and engineers as well as sustainable development.

Abstract:
Based on Data Riset Kesehatan Dasar Indonesia (2013), 65% cases of diseases are caused by non-contagious diseases, one of them is cervical cancer. Individual response to the cancer varies depend on personality and their perception about social support. This study uses McCrae-Costa’s Big Five Personality Theory (2003) and Cohen’s Social Support (2002). Sixty cervical cancer patients, selected by accidental sampling, were given personality and social support questionnaire. Each trait’s score tested its contribution to social support’s score with Multilinear Regression Test by SPPS 20. Agreeableness contributes to perception about appraisal support (F=8.303) and belonging support (F=4.501). Extraversion contributes to perception about appraisal support (F=7.7). Openness to experience contributes to perception about belonging support (F=5.465) and tangible support (F=3.922). Neuroticism and Conscientiousness do not contribute to perception about any social support dimensions. Hopefully this study can be used by the patient’s family, the hospital, and LSM in giving social support and also for the patient to understand about their personality and know what kind of help they do need from people around. This study investigated the association between perceived social support, blood pressure, and heart rate during rest and stress. 29 men were selected from 184 students on the basis of having high and low perceived social support. During rest and two of the laboratory stressors, the low-support group had higher diastolic pressure than the high-support group. Systolic blood pressure and heart rate did not differ between the two groups during either rest or stress. The low-support group was slightly older (24.8 yr.) than the high-support group (22.4 yr.), but the groups did not differ with respect to parental history of hypertension, body mass index, smoking, anxiety, anger inhibition, or environmental stress.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction. The patients in situations of “being ill” have to face not only pain and disabilities, but also problems in their social relationships. Perceptions of illness are results of reactions to the changes in the existential situations, and that these correspond to determined illness coping strategies. Aim. The aim of the research was to determine the relationships between perception of illness and social support, with the indicators of the adequacy of the renal replacement treatment and the level of urea as a biomarker of disease offset. Material and methods. The study was conducted on a group of 150 patients who were on chronic hemodialysis, and who were suffering from end stage renal disease. The patients were treated at on of the several Fresenius Medical centres. As a group, average Kt/V value was 1.45 (SD=0.22) and the URR ratio 71.78 (SD=5.95). Moreover, average urea concentration before HD equaled to 133.78mg% (SD=39.68) and after hemodialysis - 38.22mg% (SD=14.60). The research procedure was based on a questionnaire study. This applied three standardized scales: the Imagination and Perception of Illness Scale (IPIS), the brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ-Brief) and the Berlin Social Support Scale (BSSS). Results. Patients who exhibited higher values of urea concentration in the blood serum measured before HD, perceived their disease (IPIS scale) as causing more motivation loss to carrying out specific activities, as well as mental and physical sphere destruction, pessimism and lost control over the disease. What is more, higher values of urea reduction ratio (URR) positively correlate with the loss of control over the disease (r=-0.20, p=0.024). Moreover, patients characterized by higher values of urea concentration in the blood serum before hemodialysis, evinced greater need for social support (BSSS). Conclusions. The need for social support among ESRD patients treated by hemodialysis does not correlate with dialysis adequacy indicators. Furthermore, the level of urea marked before hemodialysis exhibits an interdependence with psychological determinants of illness perception and social support.

Abstract:
Although the perception of available support is associated with positive outcomes, the receipt of actual support from close others is often associated with negative outcomes. In fact, support that is “invisible” (not perceived by the support recipient) is associated with better outcomes than “visible” support. To investigate this paradox, we proposed that received support (both visible and invisible) would be beneficial when it was responsive to the recipient's needs. Sixty-seven cohabiting couples participated in a daily-experience study in which they reported on the support they provided and received each day. Results indicated that both visible and invisible support were beneficial (i.e., associated with less sadness and anxiety and with greater relationship quality) only when the support was responsive. These findings suggest that the nature of support is an important determinant of when received support will be beneficial.

Abstract:
Purpose – The development of individual work competencies through work integrated learning (WIL) emanates from expectations of students to learn from both the workplace and their educational institution, and an assumption that WIL stakeholders will support them. This exchange between individuals and organizational insiders, according to the social exchange norm of reciprocity, may also nurture organizational behaviors. WIL student-workers may perceive support from insiders, and orient their behaviors to increase their contribution to the host organization in terms of performance, by developing specific bonds of commitment toward different targets. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – By designing a “WIL perception of workplace support system” including four core stakeholders as a predictor of bonds of commitments, the author tested these relationships on a sample of 2,457 co-op students enrolled in a North American University. Findings – Results globally supported the hypotheses. Student-workers perception of co-workers and supervisor supports developed commitment to team. Student-workers perception of co-workers, supervisor, and organizational supports developed commitment to the host organization and to the work. However, the effect of perception of University support on commitment to host organization and to work was non-significant. Originality/value – Given the lack of studies in the WIL field from an organizational approach, the author propose to investigate what supports are perceived by WIL student-workers, and whether these supports develop specific bonds of commitment.

Abstract:
This is the first in-depth study of the social support satisfaction of Australian children, measured using the “My Family and Friends” interview (Reid, Landesman, Treder, & Jaccard, 1989). This, together with the Self-Perception Profile for Children (Harter, 1985), was administered to 70 Adelaide children aged 9–11. A main effect of support provider and an interaction between support type and provider were found. Self-esteem was predicted by both overall social support satisfaction and network size. The Australian children reported lower levels and different patterns of support in comparison with previously published data from the USA. Australian parents were perceived as less “generalist” in their support, giving particularly low levels of companionship support. Friends gave high levels of companionship support but low levels of all other types; this, as in the case of parents, makes Australian friends more “specialist” supporters than their US counterparts.

Abstract:
Introduction: Treatment adherence is an indispensable strategy in the management of chronic diseases and can be influenced by various factors. Aim: The present study aimed to investigate the mediatory role of life expectancy in the relationship of treatment adherence with illness perception, self-compassion, and perceived social support among patients with cardiovascular diseases. Method: The present study was correlational and was conducted according to structural equation modeling. The population included all patients with cardiovascular diseases that visited Shahid Madani Heart Center in Tabriz, Iran, during the spring of 2021. Then, 234 patients were selected as the sample using the convenience sampling method. The instruments included Broadbent’s Illness Perception Questionnaire, Raes’s Self-compassion Scales, Zimet’s Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Snyder’s Adult Hope Scale, and the Modanloo’s Treatment Adherence Scale. Data analysis was conducted using Pearson’s correlation test, Path Analysis, and Sobel’s test in SPSS-24 and AMOS-24. Results: The findings showed that illness perception, self-compassion, perceived social support, and life expectancy had a direct and significant impacts on treatment adherence, and illness perception, self-compassion, and perceived social supports had a direct and significant impacts on life expectancy (P<0.001). Moreover, the results of the Sobel Test indicated that illness perceptions (β=0.095), self-compassion (β=0.086), and perceived social support (β=0.087) had a significant indirect influence on treatment adherence by the mediation of life expectancy (P<0.01). Conclusion: The findings showed that illness perceptions, self-compassion, and perceived social support increased treatment adherence by the mediation of life expectancy. Thus, goals could be set to train and increase life expectancy and – consequently – treatment adherence in patients with cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract:
This research aimed at describing perceived social support and its relation to academic achievement in a sample of 760 Argentinean college students. Perception of social support was assessed in terms of four possible sources: parents, teachers, classmates, and boyfriend/girlfriend or best friend. Academic achievement was measured using three different indicators: the rate of passed, failed and dropped classes in the time since the academic career was initiated. The main hypothesis posed was that a higher perception of social support would be related to a better academic achievement (a bigger rate of passed classes, and a smaller rate of failed and dropped classes). Findings showed that women perceived significantly more support than men from all sources, except from teachers. Both males and females perceived more support from best friends or boyfriends/girlfriends, and identified teachers as the less supportive source. A higher perception of social support was associated with better academic achievement but only for females. Limitations of the study and implications for the set in motion of different interventions in the academic field, which could be specific to certain type of students, are discussed.

Abstract:
Introduction: Secure parental attachment improves the perception of available social support and the socialization of emotion regulation strategies. Research has suggested that both perceived social support and emotion regulation help individuals reappraise stressful situations as less stressful. Individuals under stress are at an increased risk for psychological problems. Method: The current study examined whether social support, emotion regulation, and psychological inflexibility mediated the relation between parental attachment and psychological problems after a social exclusion task. Results: Results indicated that secure parental attachment was associated with an increased ability to up-regulate emotions and with an increase in the perception of available social support. Secure attachment to either parent was indirectly associated with psychological problems reported after social exclusion. Discussion: Indirect effects were found only for pathways from attachment through emotion regulation strategies, which suggests that emotion regulation may be a driving factor between attachment to parental figures and stress induced psychological problems. Further results, limitations, and implications were discussed.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to analyze the perception of families and concerned social workers. The research was conducted in an underprivileged and disadvantaged microregion in North Hungary. The main focus was on the available health, educational, child welfare, and social services and supports. The starting point was to enquire about the target group’s knowledge of these services. The study examined the extent to which social work is able to provide support to disadvantaged, marginalized families with children and the way the dysfunctional operation of the system contributes to the perpetuation of the clients’ living conditions. Analyzing the quality of these services and supports is crucial to understanding the social mobility opportunities of the children living in this microregion. The results show that without capability and talent development for the children and given the lack of welfare services, the social mobility opportunities of these families are extremely low in Hungary.

Abstract:
Social isolation measures implemented in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic generated occupational imbalance, discomfort, and mental health impairment in residents. We aimed to analyze the lived experience of elderly nursing home residents during the lockdown and social contact restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Exploratory qualitative study. Information was collected through in-depth interviews and field notes. An inductive thematic analysis was performed and international recommendations for the development of qualitative studies were followed. Results: Twenty-four participants residing in nursing homes were included. Two main themes were identified: (1) emotional impact of the experience of COVID-19 lockdown (subthemes: experience of contradictory feelings; illness and death; importance of routine; feeling busy; and role of religious beliefs); and (2) support as a therapeutic tool (subthemes: family support; peer support; and professional support). Conclusion: Social restrictions by COVID-19 caused significant changes in residents’ occupations and routines, producing fear, loneliness, and abandonment of desired occupations; however, very important supports were also identified that helped to overcome the lockdown, such as social support, spirituality, and gratitude.

Abstract:
Objectives: This study was aimed to determine (1) the associations between adherence to warfarin, social support, perception of illness, and demographic factors on the quality of international normalized ratios (INRs); as well as (2) the relationship between the patients’ scores in the Malaysian medication adherence scale (MALMAS) and their current INRs. Method: This cross-sectional survey was conducted from November 2017 to January 2018 at the warfarin clinic of Jerantut Hospital, Malaysia. Results: Some 58 participants were recruited, of whom 70.7% were diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AF). Overall, 87.9% of the participants claimed adherence to their warfarin regimens. Patients with good-quality INR therapy were significantly older, had a higher median income and longer appointment durations. In terms of illness perception (IP), participants with good-quality INR therapy had significantly lower scores in the identity, personal control, and consequence domains. Overall, the total scores for IP were significantly lower in the good-quality INR therapy. Meanwhile, the MALMAS scores were significantly lower in patients with sub-therapeutic current INR. However, there were no associations between warfarin adherence and perceived social support with current TTR. Conclusion: Monitoring of demographic factors and IP’s domains is vital since they were associated with quality of INR therapy. Meanwhile, the occurrence of sub-therapeutic current INR should raise suspicion of poor adherence in these patients. Overall, IP and MALMAS are useful tools that should be integrated into the patient care protocols. Article Type: Original Research
