Gretton, Jud Lorna. "Supporting sustainable change : executive summary." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1999. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/2618/.

Abstract:
A review of modern business literature demonstrates that despite a proliferation of best practice models for managing change, none leads to consistent and sustainable success. In this work, action research within three separate projects leads to a model that facilitates change at a project level. Three main arguments for success are made: individuals and their relationships are more critical to success than technology and structure; an ability to look at problems from a systems point of view provides the key to identify excellent solutions; and making room for individuals to use their uniqueness leads to sustainable change. The final model developed is an innovative, content free support framework for change that guides the change team in creating options and making choices throughout the change process. Its role is to support the application of existing tools and techniques. The framework can lead to consistent and sustainable success because its use ensures congruence with the needs of the individuals and the business.

Webb, Justin. "Physical activity behaviour change : supporting cancer survivors to move more." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2018. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/850020/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is presented in five chapters. Chapter one offers a review of the literature, divided into six sections. The first section of this chapter provides an understanding of cancer as a disease and a public health concern, including detail on its incidence and prevalence, the biology of cancer and its treatment. The second section of this chapter reviews the literature on physical activity and cancer across the cancer continuum, from prevention of cancer, through cancer treatment, living with or beyond cancer, advanced cancer, and detail on physical activity and cancer mortality and recurrence. The third section of this chapter discusses the determinants of physical activity in cancer survivors, framed within behavioural theories and models to support the identification of intervention opportunities. The identified intervention opportunities are covered in the fourth section. The fifth section of this chapter presents the scope and relevance of the research included in this thesis. The sixth section provides a summary of chapter one. Chapter two presents the first study included within this thesis, a service evaluation investigating the reach, adoption, and impact of a training intervention to influence UK healthcare professionals to give very brief advice on physical activity to cancer survivors. This study also includes an assessment of the predictive value of the behavioural theory upon which the intervention is based, the COM-B model of behaviour (Michie, van Stralen, & West, 2011). Chapter two includes four sections covering an introduction, the method, results, and discussion. Chapter three presents the second study within this thesis. The second study is a randomised waiting list control trial to investigate the impacts of a remote-print based intervention supported by Internet-based tools on the physical activity, self-efficacy, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of cancer survivors. The randomised waiting list control trial also includes a cost-consequence analysis. Chapter four presents the third study of this thesis, a process evaluation of the remote-print based intervention supported by Internet-based tools. This process evaluation aimed to contextualise use and perceived usefulness of the intervention, supporting the identification of what works and for whom. Chapter five then closes this thesis with a discussion on the theoretical and practical contributions of the body of research as a whole. This final chapter also includes discussion on how the interventions under assessment influence the identified determinants of physical activity in cancer survivors, and identification of future research possibilities.

Abstract:
Problem - The challenge investigated in this present study is for a project-based organization to create a well-planned implementation by knowing the current state of the organization and its readiness for a change. This while also taking the time for unexpected events and communicating the issue while also taking their organizational structure into consideration. Purpose - The purpose of this study is to analyze the readiness to change for the case company with focus on three aspects of readiness: information sharing, common views and implementation approach, while also taking into account the distinct features of a PBO-structured organization. The study aims to identify supporting factors for successfully managing an implementation of a new business system at the individual level. Method - This study is a case study based on a single case company: Sweco, which is a Swedish technical consulting firm that is about to change their business system. A literature review was conducted in order to collect previously conducted research within the research area. The primary methods used for data collection in this study have been semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire, the data was mainly analyzed though thematic analysis. Results – The readiness for change for the case company is affected by their organizational structure. The results of the questionnaire show that collaboration within Sweco works relatively well, but there are some aspects that can be improved, such as communication and information sharing. The results of the conducted interviews show that most employees at the case company perceive the change of business system to be good, but they were unsure about why it would be carried through. Guides on how the change would affect the specific individual and knowing where to turn for feedback and information was pointed out as a suggested improvement by the employees. A lot of responsibility of implementing the new system was put on the unit managers. Conclusions - The study strengthens the existing theory regarding change readiness and individual supporting factors for successful change implementation. It confirms some of the strengths and drawbacks for organizations working with projects. The study also concludes how the case-company and other companies in a similar situation can utilize some advantages of being familiar with working in projects.

Abstract:
Software maintenance and evolution is arguably a lengthy and expensive phase in the life cycle of a software system. A critical issue at this phase is change propagation: given a set of primary changes that have been made to software, what additional secondary changes are needed to maintain consistency between software artefacts? Although many approaches have been proposed, automated change propagation is still a significant technical challenge in software maintenance and evolution. Our objective is to provide tool support for assisting designers in propagating changes during the process of maintaining and evolving models. We propose a novel, agent-oriented, approach that works by repairing violations of desired consistency rules in a design model. Such consistency constraints are specified using the Object Constraint Language (OCL) and the Unified Modelling Language (UML) metamodel, which form the key inputs to our change propagation framework. The underlying change propagation mechanism of our framework is based on the well-known Belief-Desire-Intention (BDI) agent architecture. Our approach represents change options for repairing inconsistencies using event-triggered plans, as is done in BDI agent platforms. This naturally reflects the cascading nature of change propagation, where each change (primary or secondary) can require further changes to be made. We also propose a new method for generating repair plans from OCL consistency constraints. Furthermore, a given inconsistency will typically have a number of repair plans that could be used to restore consistency, and we propose a mechanism for semi-automatically selecting between alternative repair plans. This mechanism, which is based on a notion of cost, takes into account cascades (where fixing the violation of a constraint breaks another constraint), and synergies between constraints (where fixing the violation of a constraint also fixes another violated constraint). Finally, we report on an evaluation of the approach, covering both effectiveness and efficiency.

Burns, Robert. "Supporting staff development through change in learning technologies in higher education." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2007. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/10324/.

Full text
Abstract:
The challenge to enhance staff development processes in a way that reflects a changing global learning environment and supports academic staff in their efforts to integrate the affordances of the rapidly changing learning technology opportunities into their learning environments is a common one for many of the institutions in higher education. This dissertation records a response to this challenge in the context of a higher education institution in Ireland. In an attempt to understand how a selected cross-section of the academic staff of the institution were aware of the pedagogical underpinning required for the effective use of learning technologies, a grounded theory approach was used to interpret their individual and degree group responses to a guided interview process. Co-raters independently identified learning issues raised by the informants in the recorded data, and, reliability tests were performed on the results from the co-raters. Having identified the highest occurring learning issues from this phase of analysis these key issues were taken back to the informants for further discussion in focus groups aimed at clarifying their thinking regarding these issues. Cluster Analysis was used at the next phase to inform how best to analyse the recordings of the focus groups. The application of grounded theory methods is set out in a way to provide transparency, seeking to respond to the, sometimes critical, comment made regarding the use of this methodology. The use of grounded theory methods enabled themes to be identified from the focus group data leading to a definition of theory that affirmed some existing theoretical positions and extended others by more specific identity of the role that academic management need to play in understanding, and planning for the integration of, the use of learning technologies by the academic staff for whom they have management responsibility.

Eddington, Margaret Maree. "Informing and supporting climate change adaptation in British Columbia’s forests through monitoring." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/45750.

Full text
Abstract:
Given the large uncertainties associated with climate change, regular and systematic measurement of various aspects of the natural environment is the primary means for understanding what changes are actually taking place. This research is focused on the development of a strategy for monitoring the biophysical attributes of British Columbia’s forest and rangelands in order to supply the information needed to bring climate change adaptation considerations into decision-making in the Province. A framework of indicators for monitoring the impacts of climate change was developed through iterative, bottom-up processes involving both expert and end-user participation. The former involved interviews with key experts and an indicator development workshop attended by 58 delegates from across the Province. The latter involved a web-based survey designed to better identify the indicator framework’s target audience as well as their key information needs and management questions with regard to climate change adaptation. The resultant framework identifies seventeen indicators of varying importance for monitoring in light of climate change. I developed approaches to measuring some of the indicators and analyzed the capacity of current monitoring and inventory programs to support their evaluation. Where possible, the data available to support the indicators was tested in south eastern British Columbia. This was designed to assess the capacity of the existing data sources to meet decision makers’ climate change adaptation needs. The results of these tests showed that, while there are some relatively good data sources that can be used to support climate change adaptation in forests and rangelands, there are some indicators for which there is a paucity of data. Through this research I have been successful in developing a solid foundation for increasing the information available to incorporate climate change adaptation considerations into British Columbia’s forest and range management. My research also offers an example to other sectors, countries and regions who are seeking to use their data to track climate change and better understand its impacts.

Abstract:
This PhD dissertation is about interdisciplinarity for climate change: a research dynamic that has found a very broad expression in the literature, especially since the 1980s. This PhD tries to better understand how cooperations across disciplinary boundaries emerge and develop. More specifically it proposes an emphasis on reflexivity, in the sens of individual and collective scrutiny of the personal as well as disciplinary assumptions, motivations and interests, to facilitate innovative and authentic interdisciplinarity. Beyond this pragmatic objective, the exploration of interdisciplinarity for climate change allows for critical discussions on the role and organisation of science for this issue

Albadvi, Amir. "Supporting design understanding in evolutionary prototyping : an application of change theory and semiotics." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1997. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2467/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis researches the problem of building design understanding in rapidly changing environments. Although evolutionary prototyping has been proposed before as a solution, little serious investigation has been undertaken into its practical and theoretical adequacy. This thesis assesses the evolutionary development approach and on the basis of the findings of an exploratory case study conducted in a large car manufacturer company, proposes a new perspective in this approach. It combines the planned organisational change theory and semiotics which respectively underpin implementation management and design understanding. The cornerstone of the proposed perspective is a semantic analysis technique which complements evolutionary prototyping. The perspective builds on three cycles of planned change model: a vision cycle providing easy access to design knowledge, an action cycle supporting modular development of prototypes based on the semantics of design knowledge, and a fusion cycle institutionalising design understanding. An explanatory empirical study conducted in a management consultancy, provides a first step towards a subjective validation of the proposed approach. A conceptual training process is suggested as a means of partnership between designer and user. This process provides a way for both user and designer to find a common designation for the terms they share in their communication, and to build a shared meaning and interpretation of actions in the workplace.

Ahmad, N. "Supporting the management of the engineering change process through a cross-domain traceability model." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.595381.

Full text
Abstract:
Engineering change originating from rework or from changed requirements is a significant part of any product development programme. The thesis then presents a framework to create a model which captures the four domains of requirements, functions, components/subsystems and detailed design process and subsequently shows how the resulting models could be used to make cross-domain models by creating the AutoBell (product of Digital Research Labs) model. Elements are linked within and across these four domains via a systematic approach, which allows representation of key aspects of designers’ knowledge regarding the change process. A laboratory experiment is also conducted to evaluate the framework for structuring information where modellers were asked to model using this framework. This experiment provides interesting insights into the thinking of designers and the effectiveness of the framework for modelling products. In particular, the dissertation shows how changes in requirements can be viewed as propagating through these four layers to cause rework in the design process, and how a traceability approach based on the model can be used to help reason about the cost of implementing a given requirement change. This technique is implemented in a software tool which is applied to the management change cases of the AutoBell. The change management support approach is separately evaluated through a series of student experiment which were divided into two groups to test the usability and utility of the approach and the tool. This dissertation also reflects on the importance of using change management methods with the project management methods. A simulation approach is developed which is used with the Gantt charges to devise a schedule for managing changes through the project. The initial results of the simulation experiments show that a schedule can be made where by packaging change requests and executing them after a fixed interval will reduce the delay in project lead time.

Abstract:
Concerns within geography over public engagement and understanding has necessitated a new strategy to be developed that moves away from the top down approach to disseminating knowledge to a dialogue between expert and learner. The study aimed to identify how practice within eLearning could be applied within the context of climate change science to form a strategy that supports the public with understanding the holistic nature of the discipline that is relevant to the individual. The study also aimed to identify whether there is knowledge within the discipline that can be described as troublesome and act as a barrier to developing a deeper understanding. The study used a sample population of 94 students over a three-year period from an undergraduate module, at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford. This formal situation allowed a blended communication strategy to be evaluated within known parameters of a university module before being applied to the wider public. A coding analysis of the students’ weekly online journals identified the perceived key concepts whilst an assessment of the coded entries using the Biggs and Collis (1982) SOLO taxonomy illustrated their level of understanding. In conjunction with the weekly journals the students contributed to a group wiki website that over the course of the module developed into a representation of their collective understanding of the scientific debate. The taxonomy is applied to the wiki contributions allowing a comparison between the understanding within an individual forum (online journal) and a social forum (wiki). An end of module questionnaire evaluated the students’ perception of the learning process. The research showed that within the limitations of the study, eLearning could be used as a successful mechanism in a contextual model of communication with the role of the ‘expert’ a key factor in facilitating the learners’ experience.

Abstract:
Commercial buildings are one of the main contributors to energy consumption while both energy management and occupants’ consumption behaviour play crucial roles in how energy is consumed. This study explored the energy awareness of occupants in a commercial building with the goal to investigate how increased awareness could support behaviour change. For this purpose, a cooperative gamified visualization of energy consumption data, “EnerSpace”, is designed, implemented and evaluated. 8 occupants participated in this study who experienced a one-week baseline period and a one-week “EnerSpace” game period. In EnerSpace, the participants were divided into two teams and powered a spaceship with their energy saving respectively on a resource exploitation trip to Mars. Each participant had an avatar in the spaceship who introduced the participant’s personal consumption data. The energy conservation of the participants affects the moving speed of the spaceship and the living condition of their avatars. Participants were rewarded by a postcard sent by the avatars when reaching a destination. The results showed that the participants 1) decreased their energy consumption, 2) reported a fun and engaging experience with EnerSpace, and 3) felt motivated for energy conservation by different motives. This study indicated a potential for energy saving in a commercial building using a cooperative game.

Abstract:
This exploratory study comprising two phases examines the role of networks in academics' professional learning about teaching and changes in extant teaching practices. The importance of networks for professional development, provision of support and enhancement of teaching practices is well documented in compulsory educational settings. However, there is limited empirical evidence on with whom academics cultivate their significant connections, and also how they capitalise on network benefits for their professional development. Drawing on the combination of Social Network Analysis and semi-structured interviews, this study investigates the social structure, processes and value of academics' personal networks relating to teaching. Study participants represent a wide range of disciplines and institutions, enabling comparisons of networking practices across academics with different educational backgrounds and experience levels. Findings show that participating academics have the tendency to forge physically-proximate and strong-tie learning and advice-seeking connections. The proportion of boundary-crossing connections is higher in academics' learning networks than in their advice-seeking networks. High proportion of external connections suggests better learning opportunities and potential for innovations in teaching within the participants' personal learning networks. Moreover, networks of experienced, rather than of novice and mid-career, participants reveal more diversity, pointing to the optimal network value. In summary, personal networks support development of different aspects of teaching, facilitation of changes in teaching and also provision of professional and emotional support. This investigation adds to limited empirical research reporting academics' learning through networks, emphasising the significance and relevance of informal relationships for professional development and practice.

Abstract:
In collaboration with HappyTail, a Swedish company developing a mobile application for dog owners, this qualitative research study examines and identifies important factors, for developers or other stakeholders, to have in mind when developing mobile applications that aim to support dog health. According to behavioural scientists, there needs to be a bridge between health themed mobile applications and behavioural change theories in order to achieve desirable results. Therefore, literature on dog health as well as on behavioural and persuasive technologies were reviewed. To fully understand dog owners’ behaviours, empirical data was collected from five in-depth interviews with dog owners recruited from groups on Facebook. The data collected, in combination with the reviewed literature, results in increased understanding of dog owners’ behaviours in relation to their dogs’ health, their sources of motivation and inspiration, and how persuasive technologies can affect their behaviours towards their dogs. It turned out that psychological aspects, such as the relationship between the dog and dog owner, was crucial among the interviewees, and that they prefer to use dog themed mobile applications with features such as social support and tailored content as parts of the design. Finally, ethical aspects that need to be considered when including dogs as stakeholders in new technologies were discussed. The result is valuable for researchers investigating dog owners’ behaviour as well as for those developing new technology, especially mobile applications, with focus on dog health.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Responding appropriately to anthropogenic climate change presents a considerable challenge to humankind. Projected changes in climate are anticipated to affect the world's natural systems, human health and economies in many ways. Consequently, there is an urgent need to implement climate change mitigation and adaptation measures that are appropriate and efficient. This dissertation focuses on aspects of risk and feasibility associated with land use based climate change mitigation. First, it reviews policy, implementation and incentive issues that are key to promoting permanence and reducing the risk of leakage associated with reducing emissions from deforestation and forest deforestation (REDD1) in sub-Saharan Africa. Secondly, it assesses the transaction costs associated with the implementation of avoided deforestation and reforestation activities and their effect on the financial feasibility of ventures located in woodland and rangeland systems. Thirdly, it explores the potential impact of biophysical risk factors (such as fire) on the outcome of REDD activities in two chapters. The first risk chapter introduces the notion of biophysical risk and reviews the risk of fire to REDD activities located in important African vegetation types. The second chapter on risk uses the Century Ecosystem Program and published climate projection data to assess the effect of projected changes in temperature, rainfall and atmospheric carbon dioxide on the outcome of REDD activities. The results indicate that, among the biophysical risk variables assessed, fire may not present a major risk to REDD activities located in African woodland, savanna and grassland systems. In contrast, fire may present a significant risk in moist forests where unprecedented dry periods may allow fire to occur in a system where it has previously been absent. The analysis of the affect of climate change found that changes in climate are generally predicted to lead to an increase in carbon stocks and sequestration rates for the vegetation types assessed. Exceptions do occur, such as the modeled effect on nutrient-rich savannas, which require further investigation. The analysis of transaction costs associated with REDD activities illustrated that such costs may inhibit the feasibility of smaller-scale activities, especially in ecosystems outside of moist forests with relatively low carbon stocks and associated revenues. Whereas the proposed creation of national-scale capacity may reduce some transaction costs to a certain extent, there is a clear need to better understand the true cost of REDD activities. In terms of required supporting policy and implementation capacity, it is noted 1) that multi-criteria land use planning is particularly important in reducing permanence risk, 2) that the scope of recognized land use activities that reduce atmospheric GHG needs to be expanded if the benefits of REDD are to be fully realised and 3) that informal land tenure may not require transformation prior to successful, sustainable implementation. A review of the appropriateness of community-based forest carbon monitoring found that such an approach presents significant cost savings while providing local employment and incentive opportunities. Exposure to such initiatives to date indicated that the quality of data collected is adequate and sufficiently robust to fulfill project and national-scale reporting and verification requirements.

Abstract:
This research investigates the potential incentives have on driving behaviour change towards the adoption of sustainable business practices by rural tourism operators in British Columbia (BC), Canada. Even though operators in rural BC have recognized the importance of making their business practices sustainable so that future generations are able to enjoy living and visiting these communities, they claim there is a lack of incentives from the industry. To support the BC rural tourism industry in attaining its aspiration to enhance the social/cultural, environmental and economic well being of the province, a model and corresponding recommendations on how to better support operators through strategic incentives was developed. Using the lens of strategic sustainable development, understanding the mechanisms of behaviour change and the role of operators as early adopters of sustainable practices, this research takes a whole systems perspective to identify in what ways sustainability can be encouraged by the tourism industry through the use of incentives in the context of rural BC.

Abstract:
Health behaviours are actions taken by a person to achieve or maintain good health, and prevent disease evolution. Health risk behaviours like medication non-adherence, physical inactivity, smoking and unhealthy dietary choices are associated with development and progression of chronic diseases like coronary heart disease (CHD). Individual behaviour is a complex pattern that is shaped over many years from the interplay of diverse socioenvironmental factors. Patients own perception towards their illness may also influence their health-related behaviours. Modifying these behaviours is the key to long term success in preventing disease and its recurrence. Traditionally, changing health behaviours among patients have focused on individual specific needs assessment and brief advice provided by health professionals at consultation. The resultant success of such efforts are variable, probably due to time constraints, the financial cost to the patient, infrequent interaction and lack of constant support. Simple interventions like text messaging that provide prolonged engagement, are low cost and have the capacity to offer regular reminders and motivation presents a potential management solution to influence patient behaviours that may also be scalable.

Full text
Abstract:
An Action Research approach to supporting change management and associated governance strategies in a community services organisation. Following a report on the Civil Society in the New Millennium Project, which was based upon the responses of citizens from forty-seven Commonwealth countries, a Compact Approach involving the state, intermediary organisations and citizens was developed in 1999, as a framework to enhance civil society. A literature review indicated that there was no research in Australia, as well as internationally, that had investigated the efficacy of this formalised agreement or Compact, particularly in a practical setting. The researcher had been working in the community services sector and had an interest in supporting community services organisations to meet the impact of change, particularly in response to government policy reform agendas. The Compact Approach was identified as a model to navigate change and develop partnerships with a civil society organisation operating in environments characterised by certainty as well as uncertainty. The researcher made himself available to a case study organisation to support change and to investigate the Compact Approach by undertaking Action Research as a participant observer. This exploratory research involved two main reference groups, board and staff, in planning, acting, observing and reflecting. A large amount of data was generated and a need was identified for it to be collated and simplified for further analysis. A new methodology was developed drawing upon the traditions of case study method and story-telling to represent the research themes of: the Compact Approach; change management; and, governance. With the Compact Approach what was found was evidence of some degree of civil society enhancement, particularly at the individual organisation level. As the study was undertaken from an organisation’s perspective the other dimensions of civil society and government had been underrepresented. It was found that government policy of promoting the market meant that competition was overshadowing co2 operation in the case study organisation. For community services organisations the main partner is government and policy frameworks need to support partnerships and civil society beyond current contractual agreements. Carver’s (1997) Policy Governance framework was partially implemented to assist with infrastructure development. However there was a lack of time and a commitment from the board and senior staff. Not all governance responsibilities can be met through such a framework and community organisations need to be mindful of its limitations, particularly for those connected to civil society. There were mixed results with Action Research being used as a change management tool. The dominance of power by those in ‘control’ highlighted management styles, but they also overshadowed group processes. Action Research methodology was also complemented by Stacey’s (1996) ordinary and extraordinary management framework. It was found that when applied to the Action Research cycle of planning, acting, observing and reflecting; that the process of reflecting was particularly supported by such conceptual mapping. What was also highlighted was the need for professionals to undertake in the field Action Research but also to draw upon their professional or technical expertise, using participant-observer-consultant modes. The capacity for a small community services organisation to change can be based upon levels of infrastructure, governance skills, available resources and level of development to operate at an associative level with other stakeholders. The viability of these smaller organisations is being challenged by the ‘managerialist’ business paradigms of government policy where the fabric of civil society has not been incorporated within accountability frameworks. Here there is a challenge for new frameworks such as the Compact Approach, to lead the way as formalised agreements with government, to enhance the role of civil society in the delivery of community services in countries such as Australia.

Abstract:
A growing body of work has emerged regarding the responsibilities required of district leaders in establishing plans that initiate and create conditions for sustainability of continuous improvement achieved through a systemic reform structure such as professional learning communities. However, limited research exists in respect to sustaining cultures of continuous improvement in rapid growth districts. Rapid growth districts can be described as school systems, which construct and open multiple campuses annually. The underlying premise of this study considered how humans interact with one another within a rapidly changing professional organization. Change theory, professional capital, organizational learning theory, and system reform emerge as the conceptual framework in this study of district support of professional learning communities. Data collection for this qualitative descriptive case study included interviewing six K-12 principals, administering the PLCA-DS survey to 247 K-12 staff members, and document review. Recognition of the importance of the PLC framework, building capacity, development of collaborative culture, and issues resulting from constant change due to rapid growth were the four themes generated by the participants to support continuous improvement in a rapid growth district. The four themes combined with the components of the conceptual framework outline how district leaders in a rapidly changing environment cultivate a process leading to system-wide improvement.

Abstract:

In the information systems development process there are important success factors. By doing an extensive literature survey we have found that these factors emerge mainly from organisational issues concerning the objective of the process and the stakeholders. One factor - to discuss the system, its subsystems and to define the system's boundary - is a prerequisite for all the others. Factors emerging from the objective are mainly about the objective being well analysed and defined, being accepted among the stakeholders and meeting business objectives. Factors emerging from stakeholders are mainly about involving the right stakeholders in the process, achieving a positive attitude and taking care of their needs about knowledge and confidence. Based on this we have developed a framework aiming to guide organisations in what considerations they should make before the project begins. As a result of our framework there will be both a clear objective, which support the business mission, as well as positive stakeholders to support the information systems development process.

Abstract:
Sustainable, effective and affordable access to energy plays a significant role when it comes to improving people's living conditions, and supporting human and economic development. Therefore, the access and availability of electricity is an important factor and indicator of how well developed a country is. Furthermore, the generation of electricity is often strongly interlinked with other sectors such as climate, land use, and water. All these resources’ systems can have a certain effect on the energy production and vice versa. It is therefore a complex sector, and it needs to be developed with these interlinkages in mind. The aim of this project is to study and analyze the future electricity system in Ghana and its linkages to climate change and water resources. In this project, the modelling tools focus to optimize the electricity generation in consideration of economic values, as well as analyzing climate change and its impact on electricity generation by hydropower. To make a projection of the electricity system in Ghana, two modelling tools were used in the study, OSeMOSYS and ONSSET. The results generated by the models give an indication of potential optimal generation mixes between 2015 and 2050, for the different set of considerations on which the scenarios were built. The projected electricity generation consists of a combination of both renewable energy technologies and fossil fuel dependent technologies. The contribution from concentrated solar power (CSP) stands for the largest share of the mix in the long term. The results also suggest that climate change most certainly will have an impact on the electricity production in Ghana, due to its effect on the performance of hydropower production. This is an indication that Ghana’s reliance on hydropower for its electricity production, could not be sustainable and reliable in the long term. Ghana is an unequally developed country and there are still many undeveloped regions with poor access to electricity, especially in the northern parts of the country. There is also a rising demand of water and land for agricultural use. Since these resources also are important for the sustainable production of electricity, further and more detailed investigation of the conflicts between these sectors is necessary for a sound and compatible sectoral development and sustainable management of resources.

Abstract:
This study will reveal leadership practices that formal leaders and their followers identify as contributing to sustainable change in schools through the analysis of trends in quantitative data and synthesis of related qualitative data. Explored within the framework of the Alberta Initiative for School Improvement (AISI), this study is a timely contribution to the provincial context of public education. From provincial politics to grass roots strategies in schools, this research complements the current literature base with an informed Albertan perspective on effective leadership for continous school improvement. The interviews in this study demonstrate leadership practices that are prevalent in schools with improvement projects through Cycle 1 of AISI and into Cycle 2. These practices correlate, in varying degrees, with a model of transformational leadership. As Cycle 2 enters its third and final year, AISI has served as a catalyst for leadership strategies creating a culture of continuous improvement. Momentum is building as teachers become accustomed to using a data to show how student learning is improving. Alberta Initiative for School Improvement has undeniably impacted the responsibilities and experiences of teachers in schools and has moved educational leadership along the spectrum from traditional to transformational. considerable work has been done to engage staff in decision-making and setting priorities for improvement, resulting in the mobilization of school communities looking for ways to ensure high quality learning opportunities for all.

Abstract:
As the society becomes more internationalized and companies spread operations to multiple locations in different countries, there is a growing need for systems that can link information between different company departments and make it available for users at any time. Over the years, companies have used several information systems for different business activities and purposes, but due to complexity and high costs, a need for an integrated platform has emerged. A system that can connect different business functions within a company, and at the same time link systems owned by customers and suppliers through modern technology is an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. Today, management control may be regarded as an information intensive company process where managers can improve control by working with relevant and accurate information. An ERP system represents a natural bearer of that information, and because of that, it becomes interesting to analyze the effects on management control when its fundamentals (the ERP system) change. As previous publications mostly have examined organizational changes and effects of ERP implementations from a more general perspective, the authors realize a need for addressing ERP systems in relation to management control. Though prior research indicates that implementation of ERP systems have affect on management control, there is still uncertainty how it may be affected. The aim for this study is therefore to create understanding of how a major change such as an ERP implementation may affect management control by causing changes among supporting roles and activities. In order to achieve the purpose for this work, the authors have exemplified an ERP implementation through a case study of a manufacturing company implementing Electronic Invoice Processing (EIP) as a part of a larger ERP change. By using a scientific research approach characterized by an iterative process that moves between theory and empiricism, some valuable outcomes can be drawn from the analyzed case material. These outcomes become in the end target for a broad interpretation of roles, activities, and how changes among them may affect management control on a more generalized ERP level. Analyzing the case, the authors have been able to identify three distinctive roles that may be affected by an ERP implementation; the Executor, the Supervisor, and the Supporter. These three roles have been found to carry out five prime activities; Information Assembling, Information Verification, Information Registration, Information Presentation, and Information Storing. Finally, the changes and altering of focus between these roles and activities were found to potentially affect management control positively through five prime aspects; Timeliness, Accuracy, Accessibility, Richness, and Control.

Abstract:
This longitudinal qualitative study concerns the investigation of the impact of a professional development (PD) programme conducted at an English department in Thailand. The PD programme was carried out as a series of nine in-service workshops with five non-native English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in the English Department. The workshops aimed to provide these teachers with theoretical and practical understanding of performance-based language assessment with a focus on the rating process. In the investigation of the impact of the PD on these teachers, individual and focus group interviews were used as the research methods. From the analysis of the data, guided by Grounded Theory, the findings show that the PD programme had a positive impact on the teachers who participated in the workshops. These teachers have become aware of their rating styles, established their own consistent rating styles, become confident when rating students’ performances, become critical to the assessment practices, realised roles of teachers in assessment, and recognised possibilities of changes in assessment. In other words, they have become more self-consistent when rating their students’ performances and they have become more critical to the assessment being used in the department. The insights gained from this research pose the implications for professional development, indigenous rating criteria and collaborative action research.

Abstract:
This thesis in Sciences of education and formation is based on a research-intervention approach theorized within the UMR-EFTS. It was the object of a contract with the La Salle Educational Fraternity with a view of leading and supporting change; it is made of two parts. The praxeological part consisted in implementing an observatory through an approach of “prospective re-reading” in three stages : a) a re-reading of the experiment, b) an analysis of the present functioning, and c) a projection into the future. The proceedings of these three stages led to settling the indicators of the observatory of the fraternities. The heuristic part dealt with characterising and conceptualizing the device. We resort to two complementary models of devices to characterize the Educative Fraternity : a) the comprehensive model (Boudjaoui & Leclercq, 2014) and b) the two-process model (Aussel, 2013). We then offer a new model for a device, focusing on governance and based on four principles : delegation, subsidiarity, involvement, and synodality. This model is centred on the group and articulates descending prescription and ascending prescription (Six, 2002)

Abstract:
In the context of yet another curriculum revision in South Africa, this study investigates how teachers can be supported to meet the environmental discourse requirements as outlined in the revised curriculum in the Life Sciences. The study takes place in the context of a National Case Study which has resulted in a development of a national network, curriculum framework and resources for teacher education, with specific focus on the integration of environment and sustainability in the South African teacher education system. The study intends to provide insights into what constitutes adequate professional support and assistance to teachers that enables them to understand and work with the environment and sustainability content knowledge requirements of the Life Sciences Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS). The study seeks to inform future curriculum implementation decisions and teacher education programmes. The study is designed as a qualitative case study inquiry that has used open-ended, individual and focus group interviews, direct field observation and document analysis to generate data. The study revealed that: * Teachers developed confidence from an in-depth analysis of the CAPS curriculum. * Teachers have content gaps in environment and sustainability knowledge and these can be addressed through professional development that emphasises rich subject knowledge. * Teachers are not familiar with teaching methods that can be used to teach environmental and sustainability content knowledge. * Teachers struggle to see the relationship between teaching and assessing. * Teachers do not have enough and adequate resources for teaching and learning. * Training given to teachers should be interactive to enable them to recontextualise training received in their work places. * Teacher training should go beyond content knowledge that teachers have to teach, but should also consider how teachers can teach and assess that knowledge. * It is important to have a strong framing for selection and sequencing of content knowledge and a relatively weak framing for pacing and hierarchical rules in teacher training workshops. * Professional development has the potential to lead to whole school development. The study recommends that: ** Recontextualisation should be grounded on interpreting the policy requirements ** Teacher pre- and in-service training should focus on developing teachers’ understanding of the foundational knowledge in the Life Sciences ** The links between Life Sciences pedagogy and environmental pedagogy should be made explicit. ** Good quality resources should be provided for teachers and they should be supported to use these appropriately. ** Teachers’ academic literacy needs to be developed. Further recommendations: * Further studies should be conducted that would look at how teachers can be supported to work with environment and sustainability content knowledge within other subjects or other content areas of Life Sciences. This could provide some insights in terms of looking at the patterns, similarities or differences between different cases. It would be valuable to trace the teachers who participated in this pilot to observe how they recontextualise the training in their classroom practices. There is no point in attending a course or training if it will not impact one’s practice. Some insights into classroom practices were gained through reflective interviews from the teachers who had taught the biodiversity content, but this was not observed in practice.

Abstract:
In the early 2000s the Swedish government financed a health statement project. This project aimed primarily to provide experience and knowledge of the usability of various management control models to function as health statement models. Furthermore, the project was expected to provide experience and knowledge of the supporting processes that was essential for the successful use of the selected management control models. The Ministry of Enterprise, Energy and Communications, which was the principal of the project, expected that the project would lead to the presentation of a common health statement model that could be used within the municipal sector. The basis for this thesis consists of a longitudinal case study in which the health statement project has been studied in three of the municipalities involved in the project. The investigation has made it possible to get four research questions answered: How were the management control systems within the municipalities changed by the introduction of health statements in each municipality? What initiated this change? How was the change in the management control systems achieved? What was the result of the changes of the management control systems within the three municipalities? By answering these research questions it has been possible to gain insight into how management control models have been affected in a change process. The empirical material consists mainly of focus group interviews which have been supplemented by personal interviews and secondary data from three of the municipalities that participated in health statement project. The findings from the research can be observed in several areas. An organization's vision of itself in relation to similar organizations can determine whether a change process can be initiated. Individual forces, and especially stabilizing forces, are important to consider, and influence, if a change program shall be implemented. Institutional forces are linked not only to existing structures and individual drivers are not only linked to individuals' actions. Both types of forces are affected by and affect modalities that exist as interfaces between structures and actions according to the structuring theory. Supporting processes are important to consider in relation to organizational learning and individuals' actions. The communication and motivational processes has been important as mobilizing supporting processes.

Fennell, Jacqueline E. "Chance memories : supporting involuntary reminiscence by design." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2015. http://research.gold.ac.uk/11740/.

Full text
Abstract:
People give huge importance to preserving their memories as a way of understanding who they are and what they are about. Current memory support systems, however, favour people self-prescribing time and space to collect, store and maintain explicit memory triggers (e.g. photographs, videos, memorabilia). Finding time to access such systems and their potential triggers to engage in reminiscence is a process requiring great effort, organisation and dedication. This thesis builds on the view that it is not the supports that contain the memory but people to explore new systems that hint at memories rather than serving as repositories. This offers great scope for designers, as systems no longer have to be designed around personal memory evidence alleviating the need for people to contribute, update and retrieve personal content. To achieve this, understanding around involuntary memory provides inspiration towards designing support and is considered through more specific questions: . What are current methods for capturing, archiving and accessing memory triggers? . Through understanding the nature of memory, how can design support unexpected remembering? . How might designed support for unexpected remembering enhance reminiscing experiences? The methodology is an iterative evaluation of current practices, analysis, proposals and recommendations, with three methods used throughout. First, I review literature around the nature of memory and exploring the current approaches for designing reminiscence support as a foundation for new approaches. Second, I report empirical studies to collect anecdotal evidence of unexpected remembering. Finally, I develop proposals and recommendations that reflect on the findings of the literature review and explorations showing how design can extend and enhance current experiences of unexpected remembering. Overall, this thesis develops a new approach to designing memory support. As an alternative to prescribing explicit, intense and proactive memory recall instalments, this research presents design recommendations that are sympathetic to how people naturally remember and their need for spontaneous, lightweight memory recall.

Dias, Victor. "Supporting software integration activities with first-class code changes." Thesis, Lille 1, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015LIL10101/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Developers typically change codebases in parallel from each other, which results in diverging codebases. Such diverging codebases must be integrated when finished. Integrating diverging codebases involves difficult activities. For example, two changes that are correct independently can introduce subtle bugs when integrated together. Integration can be difficult with existing tools, which, instead of dealing with the evolution of the actual program entities being changed, handle code changes as lines of text in files. Tools are important: software development tools have greatly improved from generic text editors to IDEs by providing high-level code manipulation such as automatic refactorings and code completion. This improvement was possible by the reification of program entities. Nevertheless, integration tools did not benefit from a similar reification of change entities to improve productivity in integration. In this work we first conducted a study to learn which integration activities are important and have little tool support. We discovered that one of such activities is the detection of tangled commits (that contain unrelated tasks such as a bug fix and a refactoring). Then we proposed Epicea, a reified change model and associated IDE tools, and EpiceaUntangler, an approach to help developers share untangled commits based on Epicea. The results of our evaluations with real-world studies show the usefulness of our approaches

Stockton, Karen. "An explorative study considering the process of change at school and local authority level as a result of implementation of the Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004 and The Additional Support for Learning (Changes in School Education) (Scotland) Regulations 2005, with its support document, Supporting children's learning - code of practice 2006." Abstract:
This research evaluates the process of change at school and local authority level, as a result of the implementation of the Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act 2004. Five research questions investigate the perceptions of those school staff taking part in the process of change, in that they query: the properties staff attach to the process of change; the conditions they believe may foster or inhibit the process of change; the skills they feel are important to facilitating a process of change; what changes there may be for children with Additional Support Needs; and, importantly, what meaning they infer from taking part in the process of change. This research pursues a flexible qualitative design, marrying Grounded Theory and a Constructivist philosophical perspective. The method utilised to address these questions involved administering initial Quality Indicator Schedules, followed by twelve semi-structured interviews in three phases (A, B & C) with staff in two schools. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of the transcribed interviews took place at the end of phases A, B and C. The research findings suggested that those staff taking part attached the following properties to the process of change: change in school practice; good understanding; and an understanding and attitudinal shift. In addition, staff were able to depict the conditions, from their own perspective, that either fostered or inhibited the process of change, to the extent that, during phase C, they had conceptualised their thinking into a framework: the Bottom-Up Model/Approach which offered them a preferred framework to help support future processes of change. The meaning inferred, from the perspective of those staff taking part in the process of change, focused on self and school improvement better to support children with Additional Support Needs.

Tokadli, Guliz. "Supporting general aviation pilots during rerouting process due to sudden weather changes." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/53961.

Full text
Abstract:
General aviation pilots need different types of flight information in order to follow events and the changes related to the aircraft environment while flying. However, general aviation cockpits have some limitations as space to install flight displays to provide flight information beyond the basics to the pilot. Additionally, more sophisticated instrumentation is often expensive to install and maintain. With the development of the tablet-based software applications (such as ForeFlight, WingX Pro7 or Garmin Pilot applications for iPad), general aviation pilots have started to use them instead of paper documentation. These software applications provide essential flight information such as weather forecast, aviation charts, flight documents, etc. Unfortunately, the expectations for their capabilities are changing with the increased demand and popularity of these software applications. Therefore, these flight planning software applications are compared to find what is missing and what have not met the expectation of pilots. First, how the software applications support their decision-making process was described and demonstrated to choose the appropriate flight parameters to change flight path while handling with the other cockpit responsibilities. Finally, these design requirements were validated via HITL tests in a part-task flight simulator. The results provided that the suggested design requirements are found highly useful for both novice and expert general aviation pilots. Specifically, novice general aviation pilots might be able to get visualization to compare real-time weather and weather forecast, and then they might gain experience to improve their success for a in-flight re-planning. On the other side, expert pilots might prefer to use this system if they fly an airspace which they are not familiar to weather features of that region.

Burt, Stephanie. "Re-Branding Palliative Care: Assessing Effects of a Name Change on Physician Communicative Processes During Referrals." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2011. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc67964/.

Full text
Abstract:
Although provision of palliative care on the United States is growing, referrals to the service are often late or non-existent. The simultaneous care model provides a blueprint for the most progressive form of palliative care, which is palliation and disease-oriented treatments delivered concurrently. Research indicates the existence of a widespread misconception that associates palliative care with imminent death, and some organizations have chosen to re-brand their palliative care services to influence this perception. The goal of this study was to assess the effects of a name change from palliative care to supportive care on the communicative process during referrals to the service.
