Abstract:
This chapter gives a reflective account of a values-based model of involuntary psychiatric seclusion and treatment (henceforth “involuntary treatment”) adopted in the training materials produced by the UK government to support implementation of its Mental Health Act 2007 and associated Code of Practice. Values-based involuntary treatment supports balanced decision-making on individual cases within a framework of shared Guiding Principles. A critical factor in developing the model was partnership between stakeholders representing the plurality of value perspectives embodied in the Guiding Principles. Values pluralism however has not been widely reflected in practice. Possible reasons for this include a fault-line in values-based practice. This has been focused on individual decision-making whereas the decisive influences on involuntary treatment have turned out to be social and political. Broadening the philosophical resources of values-based practice to include those of political philosophy may contribute to the development of more effective approaches to values-based involuntary treatment.

Abstract:
This chapter identifies and explores three different models of peer support that are currently in widespread use. There is a brief review of the policy and practice context of peer support. The chapter explores and explains some of the language associated with peer support and some of the assumptions that this language implies. The nature of power relationship and its impact on peer support is considered. The three models of peer support are explored in detail, with a particular emphasis on the commonalities and differences between them, the motivation of those involved, and the underpinning values of each approach. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the nature of peer relationships and the characteristics that make people peers in the context of peer support.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses mental health advocacy in the UK and how the history of mental health care has influenced current practice, as well as how the advocacy sector in general has shaped government policy and legislation. The emphasis is on England and Wales, although advocacy delivery in Scotland and Northern Ireland is also considered. The chapter first defines advocacy and outlines its history in the UK before analyzing recent developments in the country. It then examines the principles of advocacy (independence; empowerment; representation, information, support; accountability; confidentiality), together with different forms of advocacy in the UK and key legislation, including the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the Mental Health Act 1983 in England and Wales. Finally, it looks at issues and challenges faced by mental health advocates with regard to ethics and values, such as conflicts of interest and duty, the nature of professional obligations and neutrality, and social justice.

Abstract:
Misgivings concerning the value of beauty are widespread. Outside the academy, beauty is often regarded as frivolous, and public support for aesthetic activities is often justified by appeal to their economic and cultural spillover effects, rather than their inherent value. Arts scholars who regard perceptions of beauty as contributing to oppressive social formations have come to emphasize non-aesthetic values in art. Meanwhile, philosophy has been stuck for some time with a consensus that aesthetic values are hedonic values—an item’s aesthetic value is its power to produce finally valuable experiences. The trouble is that aesthetic hedonism plays into misgivings about the value of beauty. A plan is laid out for working towards the network theory of aesthetic value as an alternative to aesthetic hedonism.

Abstract:
The holistic assessment of the patient with ALS and their family will help to maximize the care as the disease progresses and the end of life approaches. This includes consideration of advance care planning, so that the person’s wishes are known if they lose capacity or communication late in the disease course. Discussion of ventilatory support, either by non-invasive ventilation or tracheostomy ventilation, is particularly important so that decisions are not made in a crisis situation. Although ventilatory support may improve quality of life (QoL) and length of survival, there may be increased dependency and continued disease progression. The recognition of the later stages of disease progression can allow further discussion and anticipation and preparation for end of life care—for patient, family, and professions—so that QoL is maximized until death.

Abstract:
We draw on recent work on peer-supported recovery to explore the roles respectively of values-based practice and of its African-enhanced form,Batho Pele, in co-production and other positive practice initiatives in mental health. Interdependence, as the aim of peer-supported recovery, is set in context first with the dependence of asylum hospital care and then with the independence of community care. Each has positive and negative aspects reflecting the diversity of values in mental health. We then show how the resources of values-based practice support effective engagement with diversity of values. The traditional formulation of values-based practice, focusing mainly on individual values, has limitations when applied to the individual-community values of interdependence. Here,Batho Pelecomes into play. Building on the combined individual-community values of the African concept of ubuntu,Batho Peleoffers a novel resource for interdependence in peer-supported recovery practice and other areas of co-productive positive mental health practice.
