Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of the paper is to analyse how transport activities are embedded in supply chains and networks.Design/methodology/approachThe paper is empirically grounded in a single case study that describes and analyses a supply chain of a particular product, Geocloth, focussing on how transport activities are organised in the supply network.FindingsThe paper concludes that transport activities are embedded in two related settings – the supply chain setting and the transport network setting – with implications for how adjustments can be made to increase transport performance. Furthermore, the paper shows how transport performance can be analysed as a function of how business relationships are connected vertically (i.e. how transport activities are sequentially connected within supply chains) and horizontally (i.e. how transport activities are connected across supply chains with regard to joint resource use).Originality/valueThe paper contributes to the understanding of how transport is integrated in supply networks by focussing on the connections between business relationships in supply chains and by pointing to how transport activities are embedded both in supply chain settings and in transport network settings.

Abstract:
Purpose In today’s ever-changing global business environment, successful survival of manufacturing firms/production units depends on the extent of fulfillment of dynamic customers’ demands. Appropriate supply chain strategy is of vital concern in this context. Lean principles correspond to zero inventory level; whereas, agile concepts motivate safety inventory to face and withstand in turbulent market conditions. The leagile paradigm is gaining prime importance in the contemporary scenario which includes salient features of both leanness and agility. While lean strategy affords markets with predictable demand, low variety and long product life cycle; agility performs best in a volatile environment with high variety, mass-customization and short product life cycle. Successful implementation of leagile concept requires evaluation of the total performance metric and development of a route map for integrating lean production and agile supply in the total supply chain. To this end, the purpose of this paper is to propose a leagility evaluation framework using fuzzy logic. Design/methodology/approach A structured framework consisting of leagile capabilities/attributes as well as criterions has been explored to assess an overall leagility index, for a case enterprise and the data, obtained thereof, has been analyzed. Future opportunities toward improving leagility degree have been identified as well. This paper proposes a Fuzzy Overall Performance Index to assess the combined agility and leanness measure (leagility) of the organizational supply chain. Findings The proposed method has been found fruitful from managerial implication viewpoint. Originality/value This paper aimed to present an integrated fuzzy-based performance appraisement module in an organizational leagile supply chain. This evaluation module helps to assess existing organizational leagility degree; it can be considered as a ready reference to compare performance of different leagile organization (running under similar supply chain architecture) and to benchmark candidate leagile enterprises; so that best practices can be transmitted to the less-performing organizations. Moreover, there is scope to identify ill-performing areas (barriers of leagility) which require special managerial attention for future improvement.

Abstract:
The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number seven expressly calls for universal access to affordable and sustainable energy. Energy sustainability will require a reduction in energy consumption, including embedded energy consumption in sectoral demand and supply chains. However, few studies have estimated the amount of coal, petroleum, and gas (fossil fuel) embedded in demand-and-supply chains (FFEDS). Furthermore, the inter-and intra-sectoral energy linkages are understudied. This study quantifies China’s FFEDS, the world’s largest energy consumer. According to the findings, the highest levels of coal, natural gas, and petroleum consumption (CNGPC) are embedded in the construction sector’s input demand. “Electricity and steam production and supply” total intermediate exports (internal plus inter-sectoral) stimulated the highest coal consumption. “Crude petroleum products and natural gas products” and “railway freight transport” aggregate supplies induced the highest volume of natural gas and petroleum consumption. Compared to intra-sectoral demand, inter-sectoral demand stimulated significantly larger CNGPCs. In contrast, CNGPC’s inter- and inter-sectoral supplies were nearly identical. Modifying current carbon taxation and credit mechanisms to include energy embedded in demand and supply can help to achieve SDG 7.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate how management attention and supply chain complexity affect the decision-making process and cost estimation accuracy of supply chain design (SCD) decisions.Design/methodology/approachThe research follows an embedded case study design. Through the lens of the behavioural theory of the firm, the SCD decision process and realised outcomes are investigated through longitudinal data collection across ten embedded cases with varying degrees of supply chain decision-making complexity and management attention.FindingsThe findings suggest that as supply chain decision-making complexity increases, cost estimation accuracy decreases. The extent to which supply chain decision-making complexity is readily recognised influences the selection of strategies for information search and analysis and, thus, impacts resulting cost estimation errors. The paper further shows the importance of management attention for cost estimation accuracy, especially management attention based on conflicting goals induce behaviours that improve estimation ability.Research limitations/implicationsA framework proposing a balance between supply chain decision-making complexity and management attention in SCD decisions is proposed. However, as an embedded case study the research would benefit from replication to externally validate results.Originality/valueThe method used in this study can identify how supply chain complexity is related to cost estimation errors and how management attention is associated with behaviours that improve cost estimation accuracy, indicating the importance of management attention in complex supply chain decision-making.

Abstract:
Harm facilitated by corporations has received increased attention in recent years. However, corporate crime and harm remain under-researched themes in relation to labour exploitation, in both theoretical and empirical terms. The purpose of this article is to argue that, in the context of agricultural and food supply networks, harmful labour practices result from structural problems associated with the demand for products. Although individual employers and businesses have a role in facilitating these harmful practices, these practices also emerge from otherwise legitimate agri-food supply network dynamics, such as subcontracted labour, which results in fragmented responsibility. Therefore, labour practices have significant implications for the nature, organization and control of corporate harms, whereby harmful consequences become normalized, accepted and embedded in agri-food supply network practices. Criminological analyses of food production and contemporary markets more widely can begin to address the systemic challenges of harmful labour practices, in both domestic and global supply networks.

Abstract:
Intent, initiative, immersion, impact manifest through the renewable energy embedded sustainable supply chains. The value-add is more enhanced with COP26 determination to curb methane minimum minus thirty percent. The change obviously embeds benefits, through intent on societal empowerment, initiative on water waste energy rehaul, immersion with gender aligned supply chains. This paper is on the construct of mixed method based qualitative methodology on value-add change that embeds benefits in the renewable energy embedded sustainable supply chains with methane harness. Embedded energy in supply chains can now focus on innovation retaed to methane and not alone carbon dioxide. Developing regions are vibrant with economic activity that proliferate supply chains. They innately depend on water waste energy footprint. There is resonating need for positioning sustainable supply chains with renewable energy that is gender aligned. Methane is a ultra-potent greenhouse gas that has a win win focus on adoption of renewable energy as well as attain sustainability of energy needs of supply chains. Methane traps one hundred times more heat when present in the atmosphere. Focus on methane is potent as it gets removed within a decade, in contrast to carbon dioxide that lingers over centuries. The linkgage options through innovation, intent, impact is a contribution of this paper. Supply chain resource corridors are tenable to potential renewable inclusion. The possibility of varying the impacts of different values of the independent variables, future research can confirm the extent of renewable energy adoption with sustainable supply chain growth. One could also design for variance on the changes of location or habitats, that can define the need of a distributed and differentiated range of combinations. A metric could be designed which is responsive to varying combinations of water quality, waste parsimony and renewable energy minus methane feasibility.

Abstract:
The work is dealing with the problem of developing an embedded system for supply voltage converter of Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) with advanced built-in ability to measure the volt-ampere (I – V) characteristics of structures directly during their operation. This feature is crucial in the development of a new generation of intelligent OLED controllers, which in relation to known solutions, are characterized by reduced power consumption and increased speed of periodic or continuous measurement of the I – V characteristics of OLED structures. On the basis of such measurement the drift of characteristics of OLED structures in the course of their operation is carried out, and therefore, the possibility of operative correction of their power modes is provided. The measurement of I – V characteristics of OLED structures is performed on the transients of voltage generation in the boost circuits of the drivers. To meet the requirements for such measurements, the parameters of the transient pulses must meet certain criteria. The pulse amplitude should be sufficient to scan the I – V characteristics of OLED structures in the whole range of their possible operation, and the shape and rise time should be optimal from the point of view of further detection of these I – V patterns, in particular, regarding their drift in temperature modulation or OLED structure degradation. In a number of tasks scanning and measurement of I – V characteristics should be fast enough to prevent heating, but acceptable for high-precision analog-to-digital conversion. The parameters of the pulses provide the ability to measure the thermal parameters of thermal resistance and its dependence on the duration of heating. The controller is implemented on the basis of programmable systems on the chip, namely on the PSoC 5LP.

Abstract:
Portable devices are mostly powered by battery. With the products tending to the direction of light, thin, short and multi-functional integration, the power requirements of portable devices are increasing all the time, but the energy density of battery is far behind the speed, the improvement of performance relies heavily on the power management technology. Therefore, it’s needed that manage the power of whole system with the integrated viewpoint to reduce power consumption and extend the system work time. After the analysis and research for power management technologies, one kind of a combination of hardware and software power management solution is proposed. The power management IC with embedded Linux operating system's Dynamic Power Management technology, better to reduce system power consumption, meets the requirements of the power system supplied by portable equipment.

Abstract:
The migration enhanced embedded epitaxy (ME3) mechanism and 2D dopant distribution of the embedded trench region is investigated with the aim to realize the all-epitaxial, normally-off junction field effect transistor (JFET). We found that the embedded growth consists of two main components. First one is the direct supply without gas scattering and the other one is the surface migration supply via the trench opening edge, which dominate the ME3 process. An inhomogeneous 2D distribution of Aluminum (Al) concentration was revealed for the first time in the 4H-SiC embedded trench regions by the combined analysis of secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and scanning spreading resistance microscopy (SSRM) results. The maximum variation of Al concentration in the trench is estimated to be about 4-times, which suggests that the Al concentration is highest for the (0001) plane and lowest for the trench corner (1-10x) plane. Al concentration in the (1-100) plane, which determines the JFET p-gate doping level is 1.5-times lower than (0001) plane for trench region fabricated on Si-face wafers.

Abstract:
Adopting digital technologies in a business can help with sustainable supply chain management. These technologies can make e-commerce development faster and empower the emergence of B2B e-commerce businesses. In this study, our focus was to develop a framework for an Internet of things (IoT) embedded sustainable supply chain to deliver textile items using a B2B e-commerce business model. We formulated a mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) model to minimize the total supply chain cost, including the B2B orders’ packaging, handling, and transportation, with carbon emission taxation. Furthermore, the purchasing cost of the RFID tags and IoT facilities that were provided on the transport vehicles was high. The proposed model was solved by using the global solver in the LINGO software package and finding the optimized value of the total supply chain network cost. We tested the proposed model in different case scenarios, i.e., small- to significant-sized problems. Then, a sensitivity analysis was performed to observe the variations in the overall cost of the supply chain network when there were changes in the main parameters of the proposed model. The results of the models showed that models can be helpful for efficient logistics planning and supply chain design.

Abstract:
Government carbon policies and consumers’ preferences are forcing companies to reduce their carbon emissions. Due to financial and technical constraints, carbon-dependent manufacturers are seeking embedded services from energy service companies. By considering these government carbon policies and consumer preferences, this paper constructs a revenue-sharing contract and a two-part contract model for an embedded low-carbon service supply chain using the Stackelberg game to investigate the contractual coordination between the manufacturer and energy service company and their optimal decision making. The equilibrium decisions and the selection of contracts in the supply chain with different parameter levels were obtained. The model’s validity was verified through numerical simulation analysis, and the impacts of the main parameters on the equilibrium decisions and expected utility for the supply chain were analyzed. The results showed that both contracts would enable manufacturers and low-carbon service providers to achieve profit maximization goals when the parameters meet certain constraints. Changes in consumers’ low-carbon and low-price preferences can cause manufacturers to change their business strategies. In addition, the level of technology of ESCOs affects the selection of the type of contract between manufacturers and energy service companies. The findings described in this paper can provide management insights for manufacturers regarding carbon reduction in practice.

Abstract:
Currently, industry is going through the fourth Industrial Revolution, also termed Industry 4.0. It is characterized mainly by the cyber-physical systems dominated by digital technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT). Organizations are making significant effort to understand customer needs and subsequently align them to the business goals for achieving market leadership. It is imperative for the longevity of the organization that goods and services be made available to the customer at the most appropriate place, time, and price. Supply chains are contributing to achieving this organizational goal. A paradigm shift was observed in the past few decades when organizations competed as supply chains in the market more than an individual brand. This shift brought forward the importance of collaborative supply chains. Researchers in this study have presented the impact of IoT origins on real-time data on a collaborative supply chain model, including internally and externally aligned parameters. The study recommends the best model basis for the goodness of fit from the customer and vendor perspective for the automotive industry in India.

In this paper a kind of architecture for an energy-saving EDM supply composed of three serial stages in the topology and its practical design are discussed. Various special controllers and its assisted circuits are introduced in the each of the three serial stages. The PFC controller UC3854 placed on the front stage provides satisfactory input power factor of the system. The PWM controller UC3875 mounted on the middle stage realize the closed control of the current of the inductance limiting machining current. An embedded controller PIC16F877 on the final stage is chosen to setting such machining variables as peak current, discharge duration and pulse interval. The communication with host PC is also realized by the same embedded controller. The architecture based on model of multi-controller parallel working guarantees capacity of the system real-time process. The prototype of the energy-saving EDM pulse supply using MOSFET power device is developed. A lot of experiments have demonstrated the feasibility and stability of the practical design.

Abstract:
In the modern world different products and goods are available throughout the world thanks to the complex supply chain system. Often products are transported on long journeys with different transportation systems where products can be damaged or spoiled. Smart Sticker is a concept for product environmental condition monitoring that can resolve some problems in the supply chain. Smart Sticker will record product environmental data in the supply chain and enable producer/consumer product monitoring. Because of ultra-low power design, Smart Sticker component selection must satisfy ultra-low power specifications, besides standard accuracy, and real-time implementation. In this paper we give an overview of the necessary measured environmental parameters and the selection of sensors with emphasis on low power design. We provided a model for the calculation of the maximum operating time, which is applied for the two Smart Sticker instances with significantly different energy consumptions. In the worst-case scenario operation time is 198 days which can be increased with a higher capacity battery

Abstract:
Abstract A two-period model is widely used to derive optimal hedging rules for reservoir water supply operation, often with storage targets as the goal to conserve water for future use. However, the predetermined storage targets adopted in the two-period model result in shortsighted decisions without considering the control of long-term reservoir operation. The purpose of this paper is to propose a new model to seek a more promising water supply operation policy by embedding the hedging rule derived from the two-period model in an optimization program for storage targets. Two modules are incorporated in the new model: the two-period model for optimizing water release decisions in each period with given storage targets and the optimization module to determine the optimal values of storage targets for connecting different periods. The Xujiahe water supply system is taken as a case study to verify the effectiveness of the proposed model. The results demonstrate that the new model is superior to others based on standard operation policy or rule curves during droughts and reduces the maximum water shortage.

Abstract:
This paper examines knowledge sharing in supply chain by developing analytical models to minimize knowledge sharing uncertainty. Analogies from thermodynamics are used to describe the phenomenon in supply chain knowledge sharing. The study finds that distance and sender capacity are important to reduce knowledge sharing uncertainty. Furthermore, higher contact frequency between the sender and the receiver without considering sender capacity is proven to be insignificant to reduce uncertainty. This mechanism provides a new approach to explicate knowledge sharing in supply networks. It also serves as a deep-rooted opening point for supplementary empirical assessment. The mechanism facilitates managers to expand their understanding of composite circumstances embedded into global supply networks to share their knowledge. With enhanced understanding, managers can spotlight their actions, increasing their firms’ competitiveness. This study provides a deeper theoretical understanding of knowledge sharing in supply networks with a practical approach.

Electronic textiles belong to the broader range of smart (or “intelligent”) textiles. Their “smartness” is enabled by embedded or added electronics and allows the sensing of defined parameters of their environment as well as actuating according to these sensor data. For this purpose, different sensors (e.g., temperature, strain, light sensors) and actuators (e.g., LEDs or mechanical actuators) are embedded and connected with a power supply, a data processor, and internal/external communication.

Abstract:
The deformation of the surface of epoxy resin plates with an embedded linear shape-memory alloy (SMA) wire as an actuator in smart structure members is measured as a function of the duration of the supply of electric current to the SMA wire, using a digital image correlation technique. Results show that the two-dimensional deformation of the plate surface can be measured, and that the maximum deformation of the plate surface can be obtained on both sides of a crack and increases with the duration of the current supply. Therefore, the deformation of the plate surface measured using the digital image correlation technique suggests the possibility of its application in the prediction of crack closure in epoxy resin plates with embedded SMA wires heated by supplying electric current.
