Abstract:
The scope of the research is to provide evidences about the benefits, in terms of healthiness, environmental sustainability, and productive efficiency, related to barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), a widespread crop in the Apulia region (italy). Seeking to pursue this general goal, the aim of the research is twofold: (i) investigating consumers’ perception about quality of organic food, in terms of sustainability and healthiness, and analyzing how and to what extent perceived quality of organic food is influenced by the presence of information related to quality on food products’ label, and consumers’ socio-demographic profile; (ii) comparing organic and conventional cultivation of barley, under favorable pedo-climatic conditions, to evaluate the potential environmental impacts related to the cultivation of barley and to identify the most suitable solution in terms of environmental sustainability and productive efficiency. An approach based on Combination of Uniform and shifted Binomial random variables, named CUB model, was performed to analyze consumers’ preference in terms of two latent components, feeling and uncertainty. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was performed alternatively using, as Functional Units (FUs), 1 ha of land involved in cultivation of barley to seek environmental sustainability and 1 kg of dry matter grains of produced barley to check productive efficiency. Findings from CUB models highlight that the presence of specific information on food’s label (e.g. environmental label, organic certification, healthy claims) contributes to perceive organic food as food of superior quality. Results also underline how consumers’ socio-demographic profile plays a significant role in driving food purchasing decision mechanism. Findings from comparative LCA show that organic barley cultivation is the most environmentally sustainable solution (but not efficient in production), vice versa conventional barley cultivation is the solution most efficient in production (but not environmentally sustainable). Efficiency in production and environmental sustainability may be balanced with methodological assumptions (choice of functional unit, allocation procedure) and qualitative elements (crop quality and adaptiveness to specific pedo-climatic conditions). A land-based FU is preferred in the analysis of the agricultural stage, while a mass-based FU is suitable for the assessment of a wider context, such as the entire supply chain. The research seeks to fill the lack, existing in economic literature, about barley crop, which is a potential strength for Apulian farms and firms, thanks to its sustainability and healthiness properties.

Abstract:
In recent years, trends in the population of large wild ungulates (wild boar, red deer, chamois, mouflon) have become worrisome for Italy and many European countries. Ironically, while two decades ago these animals were listed as endangered species, they turned out to be a social cost. In fact, their population is growing with damage to ecosystems, economic losses in forestry and agriculture, increased risk of zoonotic diseases and increased frequency of vehicle collisions. Due to this overpopulation, management and containment strategies have been developed, with a cost to public institutions and an increase in culling rates, and the availability of game meat. Furthermore, according to European trade and safety regulations (Reg. EC No. 178/2002, No. 853/2004 and No. 854/2004), hunters are considered primary food producers (such as farmers and breeders) and, under certain conditions, they can sell the game they harvest. On the consumers’ side, recent years have seen a notable increase in the popularity of hunted wild game meat among consumers. In fact, large wild ungulate meat has optimal nutritional attributes, can be considered an environmentally friendly and local food and represents a sustainable alternative to intensive livestock production of beef, pork or poultry. The growing demand and availability of these products has led to a growing number of emerging markets for hunted wild game meat in many developed countries, including Europe. However, expansion of these markets is often hampered by the lack of a structured food supply chain. This is especially the case in Italy where the hunting sector continues to have only a recreational and social connotation. Also from a scientific point of view, despite the growing potential of the hunting sector, only a few economic studies to date discuss the case of wild game meat, and there is no research examining the Italian context. All of these premises considered, the present thesis aims to contribute to the possible future development of the Italian local supply chain of wild game meat and is structured as a step-by-step feasibility analysis that takes into consideration all of the involved stakeholders with the final goal of creating this new market. Specifically, the thesis is organized into three different studies, each one developing different aspects of the analysis. The first study focuses on the primary producer of the game meat, namely, the hunter, trying to estimate the potential market availability and quality of meat of large wild ungulates produced by hunting activities in a local mountainous context. The second study aims to assess the real economic value of the local supply chain of the hunted wild game meat by performing an exploratory analysis aimed at the quantification of the value transmission along the chain. Finally, the third study addresses the need to broaden the knowledge of consumers’ attitudes towards hunted wild game meat by profiling Italian consumers and assessing whether their attitudes and perception towards hunted wild game meat, socio-demographic characteristics and objective knowledge affect their intentions to purchase hunted wild game meat products. The results of this research led to better understand some aspects of the current scenario of the Italian hunted wild game meat sector, with the final aim of understanding if and what types of strategies implement for the promotion of its future development.

The wide range of the petroleum industry's products as well as the varied value of these products coupled with the global nature of the petroleum industry presents both challenges and opportunities within the petroleum supply chain. It is along this supply chain that challenges for creating value for the customer exist as well the opportunities for reaching this goal. Value chain analysis methodology has been hailed as being capable to lend itself to process improvement challenges faced along supply chains. To achieve this objective, a case study method was used to collect and analyse data. This dissertation identifies and follows one of the supply chains of a petroleum company operating in South Africa to investigate how value chain analysis can be implemented along its supply chain.

Abstract:
In today's society, it is extremely important to find new ways for companies to improve their businesses and in that way increase profitability. One area for improvement is the company's supply chain that can be improved by streamlining and reviewing the supply chain design which can lead to increased competiveness. Streamlining the supply chain can be achieved by introducing categorization models to structure, prioritize and to use supply chain resources optimally. The aim of the thesis is to show what the usage of categorization models can contribute with, how these models work in reality and how they can be used to achieve optimal results. The focus of the thesis is the categorization when it comes to the company's supply chain and how the categorization of products/ suppliers can affect different parts in the supply chain such as inventory, purchasing, product / supplier management, relationships and strategies. The commissioner for this thesis is Cykloteket they are in the process of modifying and streamlining their supply chain. For instance they will introduce a central warehouse instead of local warehouses and examine the possibility of structuring the business to clarify the daily tasks related to the supply chain. The result of the thesis addresses the appropriate models for categorization, what categorization contributes with, recommendations how products / suppliers should be classified for a distinct categorization and discusses what can be generalized from the study.

Liquid fuels such as gasoline and diesel are traditionally derived from petroleum. Since petroleum has the potential to be exhausted, there is interest in large scale production of fuels from renewable sources. Currently, ethanol and bio diesel are liquid fuels that are mainly derived from field crops. This paper examines the supply chain challenges and issues that exist for bringing biofuel production up to scale. One major challenge that exists is how to transport the feedstock from a farm to a refinery in the most cost efficient manner. One way to improve transportation efficiency of feedstock is to increase the energy density of the feedstock. However, increasing the density of a feedstock comes with a cost. We use switchgrass as a case study and examine the tradeoff between higher transportation costs in transporting a less energy dense feedstock to processing a feedstock to increase its energy density. We show that creating ethanol from switchgrass in the United States is not competitive in price to gasoline without government subsidies, but as the supply chain matures, efficiencies gained will narrow the gap.

Abstract:
Supply Chain Management has become the primary competitive weapon in many industries. This thesis describes a model of intelligent supply chain networks that will improve information visibility and flow within the supply chain. In the proposed model, products will have the intelligence to direct themselves throughout the distribution network and will have the capability to be purchased and sold while in transit. The report gives an overview of the supporting technologies that make such a supply chain a reality. It is intended to provide a preliminary outlook at the various issues related to implementation and could be used for future research as a basis for building the infrastructure required for the new model. An effort has been made to provide a design structure for XML identification tags, which will be one of the most critical components of the system. In addition to that, this report will describe the results of a simulation analysis using a model of a hypothetical public logistics network covering the southeastern United States. The network consists of 36 nodes representing the public distribution centers and 59 arcs, which represents various interstate highways connecting them. The simulations help identify the critical parameters associated with the material flow through the network and provide an insight into the capacity requirement of the public distribution centers. The results of the simulations will be used as a benchmark for future research and development associated with building an actual negotiating agent model.

With customer satisfaction and lifecycle product quality becoming a competitive advantage, technology companies are motivated to look beyond their historical focus on forward supply chain management. Operational excellence in customer returns management, failure analysis, and closed loop corrective action is taking on an increasingly important role as companies strive to improve their business processes, policies and supply chains to achieve a world-class leadership position in their industry. In the competitive high-tech industry, companies face a number of challenges in managing customer returns and re-architecting their failure analysis supply chains to support a closed loop corrective action approach to product quality. Supporting globally distributed customers through a diverse network of outsourced manufacturing, repair, failure analysis and logistics partners increases the complexity of the supply chain architecting problem. This thesis proposes a holistic enterprise architecting approach, including governance, process, network design, organization, enabling technology, and performance management elements that should be considered when re-architecting the failure analysis supply chain. During this process, strategic decisions need to be made regarding supply chain designs that are aligned with the vision of the enterprise.
(cont.) Operations managers and leaders can use data-driven, collaborative approaches supported by decision support tools like the "Decision Model for Failure Analysis Supply Chain" to align decisions with customer value and stakeholders' needs. Implementing changes based on these strategic decisions requires understanding organizational dynamics within the enterprise. An understanding of the "frame of reference" that guides decision makers can help address implementation challenges. In addition, communication, training and alignment of incentives across functional groups to encourage collaboration can allow enterprises to make strategic decisions that are successfully implemented. The strategies proposed in this thesis are intended to aid managers in making monumental changes to their "reverse" operations and exceeding customer expectations.

Morgan, Thomas V. "Supply Chain Learning: A Grounded Theory Analysis." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2018. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1248435/.

Full text
Abstract:
Under the unifying theme of supply chain learning, this three essay dissertation extends scholarship by investigating these multi-tier relationships. Theory is emerged, grounded in data, gathered from functioning supply chains in an effort to provide scholars and practitioners with an increased understanding of the SCL phenomena. Essay 1, entitled "Supply Chain Learning: An Exploratory Literature Review" examines the current literature in an attempt to address the shortcomings and emerge areas that have been less explored and less understood. By exposing these areas of research opportunities using a grounded theory methodology, a framework was emerged allowing identification of the limitations of extant literature and providing a springboard for future research. This framework also allowed further investigation into the SCL processes and expansion of the current understanding by providing academia with a comprehensive review of the literature and revealing the shortcomings that exist related to SCL. Using the framework emerged in Essay 1, Essay 2 entitled "Toward Supply Chain Learning: A Focus on the Customers of Logistics Service Providers" explores the rationalization and cognitive processes of senior level executives of firms utilizing national or global supply chains. These respondents are directly engaged in creating, establishing and operating relationships with third party logistics (3PL) providers within a functioning supply chain. By examining the relationships and processes from the point of view of customers of third party logistics providers, a unique perspective provides insight into these relationships. Using semi-structured interviews with these executives, grounded theory was once again used to emerge theory explaining the phenomena of SCL. In particular, this research examines the elements studied from the perspective of customers of third party logistics providers as they seek to develop new processes and solutions in hopes of obtaining a competitive advantage by adaptive learning with the help of their providers and trading partners. In addition, this research increases our understanding of SCL by examining a relationship between customers and 3PL providers, their experiences and outcomes. Essay 3, entitled "Practical Application of Supply Chain Learning" focuses on the implications of the learning relationship and its impact on the practitioner. By providing the findings of the research in a context relatable to practitioners, this culmination of findings allows practitioners to relate the findings directly to their existing supply chains. Realizing that many supply chains are relationship driven, this research focuses on the findings of previous research to provide a more holistic view of the learning relationship process as it exists in multiple tiers of their existing supply chain. Providing a step-by-step explanation of the SCL process as emerged from previous research, executives are provided a tool to better identify, analyze and understand these processes as relatable in their existing environment. As a methodical analysis of the IOL process, these essays provide the foundation for understanding the relationship process that exists between learning partners in a supply chain. Essay 1 provides basis for theory development by examining current literature and exposing the shortcomings while also emerging a preliminary framework on which to build future research. Essay 2 follows up on these deficiencies and attempts to saturate understanding of the IOL process, particularly from the point of view of 3PL customers in an existing supply chain. Essay 3 delivers these findings to executives in a relatable format, providing a holistic understanding of the phenomena. In summation, this dissertation provides theory emerged from data, explaining the learning relationship from the point of view of the customers of 3PL services, the cognitive dimensions and outcomes of these decisions as they relate to learning in the supply chain.

Abstract:
One of the most significant changes in the evolution of modern business management is that organizations no longer compete as individual entities in the market, but as interlocking supply chains. Markets are no longer simply trading desks but dynamic ecosystems where people, organizations and the environment interact. Products and associated materials and resources are links that bridge supply chains from upstream (sourcing and manufacturing) to downstream (delivering and consuming). The lifecycle of a product plays a critical role in supply chains. Supply chains may be composed by, designed around, and modified for products. Product-related issues greatly impact supply chains. Existing studies have advanced product management and product lifecycle management literature through dimensions of product innovation, product growth, product line extensions, product efficiencies, and product acquisition. Product deletion, rationalization, or reduction research is limited but is a critical issue for many reasons. Sustainability is an important reason for this managerial decision. This study, grounded from multiple literature streams in both marketing and supply chain fields, identified relations and propositions to form a firm-level analysis on the role of supply chains in organizational product deletion decisions. Interviews, observational and archival data from international companies (i.e.: Australia, China, India, and Iran) contributed to the empirical support as case studies through a grounded theory approach. Bayesian analysis, an underused empirical analysis tool, was utilized to provide insights into this underdeveloped research stream; and its relationship to qualitative research enhances broader methodological understanding. Gibbs sampler and reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation were used for Bayesian analysis based on collected data. The integrative findings are exploratory but provide insights for a number of research propositions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Information technology (IT) has been used extensively by organisations in the supply chain (SC) to improve efficiency, control and competitive advantage. Research on this innovation has often neglected the drivers, facilitators and risks associated with the approaches adopted. In response, this research investigated and classified approaches to using IT in the SC and identified key drivers, facilitators and risks with each strategy. It forms a model to guide researchers and practitioners In the use of IT in the SC for organisational change. Leveraging investments in IT to improve SC efficiencies is complex and requires a well defined strategy that is supported by the drivers, facilitators, and risks (three variables) addressed in this study. In addition, organisations have different ambitions in relation to these investments with some aiming to make minor cost reductions whilst others aim to transform the organisa1ion through radical supply chain development. This ·research places special emphasis on the characteristics of IT and supply chain strategies that lead to organisational transformation. The main research question for this thesis is: How can firms most effectively leverage Information Technology Investments in the supply chain? A grounded theory approach has been used to build theory from journal articles published in 1997-2007 inclusive. A comprehensive meta-analysis of research articles, dealing with IT use In the SC and organisational change, from a broad range of academic business and scientific journals was undertaken to identify the drivers, facilitators and risks associated with leveraging IT Investments in the SC. The outcome of the meta-analysts is a model for IT use in the SC for organisational change. The results of the meta-analysis suggest that investment Inn in the SC cannot be successful unless the drivers of IT use are understood properly and the facilitating conditions are developed before using IT. A comprehensive list of drivers was reduced to ten key factors: 'improvement of Information quality', 'supply chain cost reduction', 'better decision making', 'reduction of cycle time and lead time', satisfaction of high quality service', 'real-time information accessibility', 'increased operational capability', 'sharing risks with others, 'market sharing and expansion', and 'better relationships with suppliers and individuals'. In a similar approach, ten critical facilitators were identified: 'firm's dynamic capability', 'enterprise application linkages through the chain', 'network of partnering firms or suppliers', 'willingness and trust of the partners and users', 'conductive culture of knowledge and information sharing', 'universally usable and accessible-systems and services', 'management guidance and trainings', 'expertise and experience', 'high levels of implementation planning', and 'community of users and suppliers for learning and sharing'. The key risks are also identified as these act as major constraints to the successful investment of IT in SC: 'poor ·understanding of firm's capability', 'inability to build trust between the SC partners and individuals', 'insufficient willingness of information sharing and support', 'lack of top management capability', 'incapability of managing sensitive data', and 'lack of control over the increased interdependencies'. Together these factors determine the overall level of success in relation to IT investment in the SC. Several SC strategies were identified and their characteristics defined as they form the basis of a model of IT use in the SC. These strategies include a low complexity cost reduction approach, a medium complexity collaborative approach, and a high complexity transformational approach. A key contribution of this thesis is the models and frameworks related to using IT in the SC. These provide significant directives for planning successful IT investment in the SC and related organisational transformation.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on logistics and supply chain costs to provide an analysis of sources of publication, citations and authorship using bibliometric analysis techniques (VOSviewer and CitNetExplorer tools). Design/methodology/approach: A review of 756 articles published during the period 2014 to 2019 referenced in the Scopus database was performed. The review was limited to articles published in English and directly related to logistics and supply chain costs. Findings: The research identified more than 2,000 authors representing more than 5,000 keywords and 10,000 references from a total of 155 journals investigated. A critical synthesis of the resulting data revealed several insights about various aspects of studies in this field. For instance, the review identified a scarcity of academic publications in three key areas, namely “supply chain,” “optimization” and “transportation”, which are concepts focused on the total supply chain. Originality/value: This research highlights important areas of attention for both researchers and practitioners considering costs associated with logistics and supply chain operations and strategies. The results can also help identify thematic areas, journals and topics for future research. The paper identifies and proposes research areas to contribute to the literature when challenges to investigating logistics and supply chain costs are discussed.

Given the importance of operational inefficiencies and their negative impact on the bottom line in today's competitive economy, CVS/pharmacy is very interested in implementing operational improvement initiatives across its inbound supply chain to minimize the number of non-value-added activities. Undertaking such efforts requires collaboration amongst all trade partners and a systematic approach in measuring the important performance metrics. Currently there is not a single procedure that defines the necessary metrics and the analytical tools necessary for identifying improvement opportunities. Leveraging research from the manufacturing industry, specifically supplier certification and statistical process control, this thesis aims to develop a comprehensive methodology for analyzing, monitoring and improving the operational performance of the retail industry supply chain. In this thesis, through an innovative approach to perfect order performance measurement combined with the practical application of statistical analysis methods, a complete supplier evaluation process is established. Further, by utilizing statistical sampling and based on the evaluation results, an inspection plan is provided that allows for accurate monitoring of ongoing processes with a reduction in inspection efforts. Finally through introduction of statistical process control models and root cause analysis, a complete procedure is developed for continuous evaluation and improvement, leading to efficiency gains and cost savings across the entire inbound supply chain.

Abstract:
This Thesis discusses the Supply Chain Management topic, in particular the Supply Chain Planning (SCP) area is analyzed. It refers to evaluations concerning how best to plan the market demand and how to design and manage the company supply side in order to perceive the company financial and service level objectives. The analysis is entirely based on a case study: De’Longhi Appliances Srl, the Italian productive plant of De’Longhi Group, specialized in the production of coffee maker machines. It mainly analyzes the content of the Production & Material Planning office, where I did an internship period. It refers to the short term side of the supply chain planning, meaning the way Production & Material Planning personnel adjust the production program and plan the material procurement, so that to satisfy upper level market requests. Moreover, it describes the De’Longhi Appliances supply relationship network and the way everyday information and data sharing are managed with suppliers. This work is based on two key concepts: Flexibility and Collaboration. Flexibility refers to the ability of the company to properly answer to market requests through a flexible and dynamic configuration of internal operations. On the other side, collaboration refers to the relationship among offices and enterprises to improve the information sharing process, reduce the aggregate lead time, and properly answer to supply side criticalities. It refers to vertical collaboration when analyzing the relationship among internal offices and departments, while it deals with the concept of horizontal collaboration concerning the relationship among companies. This Thesis is divided into three sections: 1_Content contextualization. It introduces the Supply Chain Management topic and the company object of the analysis, De’Longhi Group. Starting from a general overview, the business examined during the following sections is described; 2_Supply Chain Planning analysis. A description and an analysis of the current Supply Chain Planning process is provided, in order to explain how market demand comes into the factory and how it is translated into components production and purchasing orders; 3_Supply Chain Planning improvements. It introduces the Swim Lanes project that is dramatically changing the De’Longhi Appliances Supply Chain Planning process. After a brief introduction, the short-term side of this process s analyzed: Swim Lanes Operation. Possible medium-term evolutions are introduced in the last chapter.

Abstract:
In this study, we analyze a decentralized supply chain with a single retailer and a single manufacturer where the retailer sells two products in a single period. The products offered by the retailer consist of families of closely related products, which differ from each other in terms of a limited number of features only. The retailer places initial orders based on preliminary demand forecasts at the beginning of the period and has an opportunity to modify his initial order after receiving perfect demand information. However, the final orders of the retailer are constrained by his initial orders. Furthermore, the manufacturer is obligated to fill the retailer&rsquo
s final order for each product. The manufacturer has two options for procurement. The first procurement option is regular delivery at the beginning of the period, after the initial orders of the retailer. The next one is expedited delivery, after the updated orders of the retailer are received. The expedited delivery is more expensive than regular. In this setting, our objective is to present an analytical model for this contract and characterize the optimal policies for the retailer and the manufacturer. We analyze three different levels of order adjustment flexibility settings: (i) no order adjustment, (ii) unlimited order adjustment and (iii) limited order adjustment.

Supply chain visibility is critical for businesses to manage their operational risks. Availability of high quality and timely data regarding shipments is a precursor for supply chain visibility. This thesis analyses the errors that occur in shipment data for a freight forwarder. In this study, two types of errors are analyzed: system errors, arising from violations of business rules defined in the software system, and operational errors, which violate business rules or requirements defined outside the software. We consolidated multifarious shipment data from multiple sources and identified the relationship between errors and the shipment attributes such as source or destination country. Data errors can be costly, both from a human rework perspective as well as from the perspective of increased risk due to supply chain visibility loss. Therefore, the results of this thesis will enable companies to focus their efforts and resources on the most promising error avoidance initiatives for shipment data entry and tracking. We use several descriptive analytical techniques, ranging from basic data exploration guided by plots and charts to multidimensional visualizations, to identify the relationship between error occurrences and shipment attributes. Further, we look at classification models to categorize data entries that have a high error probability, given certain attributes of a shipment. We employ clustering techniques (K-means clustering) to group shipments that have similar properties, thereby allowing us to extrapolate behaviors of erroneous data records to future records. Finally, we develop predictive models using Naive-Bayes classifiers and Neural Networks to predict the likelihood of errors in a record. The results of the error analysis in the shipment data are discussed for a freight forwarder. A similar approach can be employed for supply chains of any organization that engages in physical movement of goods, in order to manage the quality of the shipment data inputs, thereby managing their supply chain risks more effectively.

Abstract:
Sustainable Supply Chain Management has become a topic of increased importance within the research domain. There is a greater need than ever before for companies to be able to assess and make informed decisions about their sustainability in the Supply Chains. There is a proliferation of research about its understanding and how to implement it in practice. This is mainly since sustainability has been assessed from various disciplines, organizational industries and organizational functional silos . There is a lack of comprehension, unified definition and appropriate implementation of Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM), leading to failure in decision making for sustainability implementation within supply chains. The proposed research identifies the research gaps through the novel application of Systematic Literature Network Analysis (SLNA) to SSCM literature. In doing so, methods including Systematic Literature Review (SLR), Citation Network Analysis (CNA) and Citation Network Mapping of literature have been used to identify definitions, KPIs, barriers and drivers of SSCM from the literature. Furthermore, a combination of methods from Text Mining and Content Analysis has been used to identify KPIs, barriers and drivers from sustainability reports of top global manufacturing companies, to better understand the practices of organizations for SSCM. The consolidation of the findings from literature and practice led to the development of an SSCM Performance Evaluation Framework built on multiple methods. A 4-level hierarchical model has been developed by classifying the identified KPIs into Economic, Environment and Social as well as considering the key decision areas including tactical, strategic and operational. Furthermore, a rigorous data collection process was conducted among supply chain and sustainability managers from top global manufacturing firms and leading academicians in the field, assessing the identified SSCM KPIs. The collected data were analyzed through novel application of hybrid Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) methods, which includes Values Focused Thinking (VFT), Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchical Process (FAHP), Fuzzy Technique of Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (FTOPSIS) and Total Interpretive Structural Modelling (TISM), for prioritizing and modelling of interdependencies, interactions and weightages among SSCM KPIs. The results obtained were subsequently used to develop a Decision Support System (DSS) that allows managers to evaluate their sustainability by identifying problem areas and yielding guidance on the KPIS and most important areas to focus on for SSCM implementation. The application of DSS has been demonstrated in the context of a case company. From a theoretical development point of view, a Tree perspective framework contributing to the ecological Theory of Sustainability has been proposed through the identification of the most influential organizational theories, and how they interrelate with each other. Overall, the proposed research provides a holistic perspective of SSCM that incorporates the various aspects of organizations, relevant organizational theories and perspectives of academics and practitioners together. The proposed DSS may act as a guiding tool for managers and practitioners for SSCM implementation in companies.

Abstract:
Practitioners operating within the construction industry are faced with considerable challenges and difficulties when attempting to manage their supply chains and obtain value for money. This work highlighted that in response to these problems, recent industry reports and academic literature have called for the adoption of more sophisticated 'best practice' approaches including proactive integrated supply chain management to provide significant commercial benefits and alter construction's supposed obsolete practices. This advice has been contested by a number of academic writers, who are more sceptical about whether generic approaches can be claimed to be 'best practice', without providing a convincing and robust methodological justification. In response to this ongoing debate, and following the power and appropriateness school of thought, this thesis developed testable hypotheses regarding the ability of construction clients and contractors to implement specific sourcing approaches under particular external power circumstances, and the impact that internal capabilities has on the ability of buyers to effectively implement proactive or reactive sourcing approaches. In testing the hypotheses, it has been demonstrated that the implementation of proactive approaches to upstream supply management are not appropriate (or possible) in all supply chain circumstances and power structures and therefore, reactive sourcing approaches may be the most effective supply strategy for some buyers, or indeed their only option.

Abstract:
Scopo.

Abstract:
This thesis is based on the application of flexibility analysis on a supply chain contract. The work was implemented using a practical case exploring a relationship between a car manufacturer (buyer) and a parts supplying company (supplier). Commonly, such contracts are ratified for a fixed duration - typically three years. A nominal order quantity (or initial capacity reservation) and a variation rate controlling the potential adjustments with respect to the nominal quantity for each period are imposed on the supplier when signing the contract. The supplier guarantees to meet the firm order should it fall within the range agreed upon, and charges a unit price of the product linear in the variation rate in order to protect himself from risks. The buyer in return is required to order the minimum quantity in each period defined by the nominal quantity and variation rate in the contract. The overall goal throughout the course of this PhD was to analyse this Quantity Flexibility (QF) contract at the strategic (or contracting) level. The prime focus - from the buyer’s perspective - was to develop a policy that determines the optimal nominal order quantity (Q) and variation rate (β) underpinning the contract that ensures the actual order quantity satisfies the actual demand as much as possible in each period and the total cost, including purchasing cost, inventory holding and backlogging costs, is minimised over the contract length. The approach taken in this study is aimed at solving the problem in two different settings. One is called the deterministic setting, where the demands are considered as deterministic and the other is called stochastic setting, where the demands are stochastic and stationary. For the deterministic setting, a parametric Linear Programming (pLP) model is developed from the buyer/retailer’s perspective to help analyse the optimal combination of values of β and Q. In the pLP model, the decision variables are the actual order quantity in each period, represented by vector x and β and Q are treated as the parameters. For each combination of values of β and Q, the optimal value of the vector x can be found by solving the corresponding Linear Programming (LP) model to optimality. However, the number of the combinations of the values of β and Q could be unlimited. To explore the optimal combination of values of β and Q, the convexity of the optimal value of the pLP model has been examined. Due to the fact that the optimal combination of values of β and Q cannot be analytically found due to mathematical intractability, this thesis numerically evaluates the best combination of β and Q to draw some managerial insights based on the findings. For the stochastic setting, this thesis analyses the long-run behaviour of the system when the signed contract is executed and calculates the mathematical expectation of per-period total purchasing, inventory holding and backlogging costs, as a function of the contracting parameters β and Q. The optimal values of these parameters are calculated through simulation of various demand patterns. For this purpose, we consider the basic case with zero lead time and a very simple order policy during the execution of the contract. These assumptions are nevertheless reasonable in the context of a car manufacturer and a supplier delivering Just-In-Time (JIT) parts using a QF contract. The evolution of the inventory position can be modelled with a Markov chain and the long-run behaviour of the system can then be analysed by considering the steady-state. Due to mathematical intractability, the steady-state is estimated through simulation. Our models differ from the previous similar works found in the literature where the QF mechanism is implemented in a way that in the models used in these works the nominal quantity (Q) and the flexibility parameter (β) are: analysed separately, coupled with other forms of coordinative drives, or computed using approximate methods and heuristics that are unable to firmly guarantee global optimum solutions.

Abstract:
Core enterprise is the center of Green Supply Chain (GSC) and it helps partners to meet the environmental standards and to improve GSC’s performance. However there are two questions for core enterprise when it establishes GSC: What roles do core enterprise play in GSC? How does core enterprise improve GSC’s performance? What criterions are considered when core enterprise chooses partners in GSC?   In order to answer these questions, this paper will use following methods: firstly, Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and Analytic network process (ANP) have be used to study on three research companies (IKEA, TOYOTA and Apple); Secondly, six interviews with research companies’ employees.   After case study, the results show that when core enterprise chooses partners, it will draw up some criterions and sub-standards for partners to fulfill. Furthermore, core enterprise plays the roles as GSC’s builder, director, coordinator, and designer in the system.   Finally, this paper answered the research questions: Firstly, in order to improve the performance of GSC, core enterprise should direct all partners in GSC to save materials and recycle waste in each link of GSC. Secondly, core enterprise can use four criterions to choose partners. These criterions are: environmental management performance, product-related elements, production-service levels, and enterprise culture.

During the past few years, blockchain technology has shown great potential to disrupt existing supply chain finance solutions, as it could increase the efficiency of invoice processing and provide a more transparent and secure transactions. However, the costs and benefits of implementing blockchain technology in supply chain finance for involved parties are still unclear, since research on the topic is scarce. This thesis explores the net value of implementing blockchain technology in supply chain finance arrangement by using cost-benefit analysis. A cost-benefit model and the operating processes of traditional and blockchain-based supply chain finance solutions are proposed and applied to a real-world case study. We prove that blockchain technology increases the total net benefit among involved parties participating in the supply chain finance arrangement as a result of improved efficiency of invoice processing. We also find that suppliers would benefit from blockchain-based supply chain finance if the benefit from the unlocked working capital outweighs the cost of the platform fee. Another finding is that the buyer does not benefit from the technology in terms of unlocked working capital.

Abstract:
A supply contract, which achieves the optimal performance for the buyer or the supply chain as a whole, does not necessarily maximize the supplier’s expected profit. Therefore, it is important to understand the impacts of supply contracts and their differences from a supplier’s perspective, which is the aim of this thesis. This thesis considers six types of supply contracts, namely, Returns Policy, Quantity Discount, Channel Rebate, Backup Agreement, Quantity Flexibility, and Quantity Commitment, in a supply chain of seasonal goods with a single selling season with a retailer and a supplier. Each contract is modelled in the framework of the interaction between the retailer’s and the supplier’s decisions. The contract parameters are optimized to maximise the supplier’s expected profit with consideration of retailer’s acceptance. Furthermore, the impacts of the demand pattern and cost structure on the performance of each contract are investigated. These contracts are then compared with each other and the best contracts are identified for various situations. In order to facilitate the supply contract selection in practice, a rule-based decision support system has been developed using Visual Basic, for user interfaces and MATLAB for the optimization engine. The rule base embodies the outcome of the comparison of supply contracts, and therefore is able to direct the system to select the best supply contract for a particular situation.

Abstract:
We consider a distribution system in which one supplier provides a single product to several retailers at the beginning of a selling season. The supplier has infinite capacity. The customer demand at each retailer is randomly distributed. Customers who encounter a stockout at one retailer may search other retailers for the product. We study the effects of this market search behavior under both decentralized and centralized control. For the decentralized control model, we show the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a Nash equilibrium, and the sufficient conditions for its uniqueness. For the centralized control model, we find that the payoff function is submodular, and thus we can only obtain allocations that are locally optimal for the entire supply chain. We also design a channel coordination mechanism to match the allocations in the decentralized control model with one of the local optimal allocations under centralized control.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Due to increased supply chain complexity, ensuring the quality of supply materials or products from upstream suppliers has become a challenge for firms. A great deal has been written on possible solutions and strategies to deal with supply chain quality risk (SCQR) in recent years. However, the manager’s decision-making process in relation to SCQR has not been fully researched. To close this gap, the aims of this study were to scrutinise managers’ perceptions of SCQR, as well as the antecedents of and decision-making related to perceived SCQR. The relevant literature was comprehensively reviewed in order to build a foundation for the conceptualisation of perceived SCQR. This study proposed that the managerial perception of SCQR was a multi-dimensional concept with four representations. A rigorous scale development process was adopted to develop a set of reliable instruments to measure perceived SCQR. With a sample of 316 Chinese manufacturers, the validity and reliability of the measurement scales for the representations of SCQR perception were assessed. Based on the risky-decision making model, a theoretical framework of the managerial decision-making process in relation to perceived SCQR was proposed. Furthermore, the agency theory and resource dependence theory were drawn on to identify factors related to the supply chain relationship and supply chain quality barriers that might have effects on three of the representations of SCQR. Based on the resource dependence theory, it was found that buyer and supplier dependence affect the representations of SCQR differently. The empirical results indicate that the inability to test and inability to trace are significant drivers of the perception of SCQR. The representation of SCQR impact on the intention of adopting two oriented quality management practices was also examined. The result reveals that when managers face increasing SCQR, they tend to be conservative in applying the quality management practices.

The amount of cargo that enters the US border is at an all time high. Cargo containers and vessel shipments enter the US from all over the world. Tracking these shipments from their origin to destination requires professional expertise. Security organizations, such as the Regional Maritime Security Coalition of the Columbia River, realize the potential of these professionals, who track and coordinate cargo containers as they move through a supply chain, to enhance security of maritime cargo. In order to utilize these supply chain logistic professionals in a security coalition, proper training and certification would be required to comply with the US Federal Code on Liability Protection. This study examines the requirements that are necessary to certify supply chain logistic professionals as certified volunteers in an information sharing, security communication network to prevent terrorist activity, smuggling, theft, and to assist in general crisis mitigation. The thesis studies how the RMSC is currently developing its security communication system around supply chain logistic professionals, and the requirements and training that would be necessary to certify them under the US Federal Code.

Abstract:
Supply chains have expanded rapidly over the decades, with the aim to increase productivity, lower costs and fulfil demands in emerging markets. The increasing complexity in a supply chain hinders visibility and consequently reduces one’s control over the process. Cases of disruption such as the ones faced by Ericsson and Enron, have shown that a risk event occurring at one point of the supply chain can greatly affect other members, when the disruption is not properly controlled. Supply chain management thus faces a pressing need to maintain the expected yields of the system in risk situations. To achieve that, we need to both identify potential risks and evaluate their impacts, and at the same time design risk mitigation policies to locate and relocate resources to deal with risk events. This dissertation aims to analyse how supply chain risks could be effectively managed. This is done firstly by positioning the research agenda in supply chain risk management (SCRM). Then, methods for effective management of supply chain risk are identified and analysed. In order to find these, we develop a research framework in which the supply chain system is divided into subsystems based on the operations of make, source and deliver; as well as on material, financial and information flows. Furthermore, research questions are raised in order to understand the impact of risks on supply chains, to identify the performance measures for monitoring supply chains, and to determine risk mitigation strategies for improving system performances. This dissertation includes a bibliometric analysis of relevant literature of SCRM published in recent years. Based on the co-citation analysis, we identify the changing interest in SCRM, from performance-focused individual issues in the early years to integrated system issues with management perspective in recent years. We also identify the growing importance of information issues in SCRM. However, there is a relative lack of research into risk mitigation focusing on information flows in the literature. This dissertation also develops a conceptual model for analysing supply chain risk. The adoption of tools from the established field of reliability engineering provides a systematic yet robust process for risk analysis in supply chains. We have found that the potential use of a stand-alone tool of Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA) or a hybrid application of Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), will be most appropriate in SCRM. Apart from above mentioned studies, this dissertation then includes three manuscripts respectively investigating the risk mitigation policies in SCRM. First, we suggest a dynamic pricing policy when facing supply yield risk, such as price postponement, where price is determined only after receiving the delivery information. This postponed pricing, can improve the balance between supply and demand, especially when the delivery quantity is small, demand has a low uncertainty and there is a wide range when demand is sensible to price change. In another paper, a system dynamics model is developed to investigate the dispersion of disruption on the supply chain operation as well as along the network. Based on this simulation model, policies are tested to observe their influence to the performance of the supply chain. The study results support the benefit of a dual-sourcing strategy. Furthermore, information sharing, appropriate order splitting and time to react would further improve the supply chain performance when disruption strikes. In the last paper, we study how capacity should be expanded when a new product is introduced into the market. The major risk here is due to a quick capacity expansion with large investments which could be difficult to recover. Using the Bass diffusion model to describe demand development, we study how capacity expansion, together with sales plan could affect the economics of the system. Using sales information for the forecast, delaying the sales and adding initial inventories, should create a better scheme of cash flows. This dissertation contributes in several ways to the research field of SCRM. It plots research advancements which provide further directions of research in SCRM. In conjunction with the conceptual model, simulations and mathematical modelling, we have also provided suggestions for how a better and more robust supply chain could be designed and managed. The diversified modelling approaches and risk issues should also enrich the literature and stimulate future study in SCRM.
