This thesis aims to study and apply the multi-criteria methodologies of decision support for supplier’s evaluation and selection in a civil construction company. Connected to this, it was sought to reduce the risks of the incorrect selection of a supplier, enhancing and maximizing relationships in the medium / long term. Considering the changes assigned to supplier’s evaluation in the recent years, as well as the integration of multiple selection criteria instead of only the price criterion, led us to develop this study. This case of the company “ABC” allowed us to verify and directly study the problems of supplier’s selection applied to the business environment. To link the whole process, a literature review was carried out, aiming at the perception of the state of the art, as well as to acquire knowledge regarding multi-criteria methods and criteria commonly used in supplier’s evaluation. From this literature review, the AHP - Analytic Hierarchy Process method was chosen to determine the best HVAC (Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) supplier for company "ABC". The definition of criteria was carried out considering the preferences of the company "ABC" regarding its supplier’s, and it was possible to define 5 essential criteria. The selection and execution of the AHP method, was decisive for supplier’s screening, being possible to determine which is the most beneficial for the company, in five possible suppliers who applied for this process. The work carried out constitutes an important contribution to supplier’s evaluation and selection in the company “ABC”, due to its value, as well as the way in which it will allow the resolution of decision problems with different criteria.

Full textDue to the ongoing globalisation and fast changes within the business environment companies are forced to adapt more quickly to customer needs. Therefore, they depend on reliable suppliers which provide them with the necessary goods and services. As a consequence, finding suitable suppliers is of utmost importance for companies. To be able to choose those suppliers companies need to establish criteria on which basis potential suppliers can be evaluate and select afterwards.
Against this background, this master thesis researches the supplier selection process from the end manufacturer’s point of view. Hereby, the focus is laid on theoretical supplier evaluation criteria and methods. Due to the lack of investigations in this branch of industry the authors have chosen the sporting goods manufacturing industry within Sweden and Austria as their field of study. They have been supported in their research by the companies the Arctic City Counting House AB, the ATOMIC Austria GmbH, and the HEAD Sports AG which provided them with the essential empirical data.
Keeping the above mentioned fact in the back of one’s mind, the authors deduce the following research question:
On which basis and how do manufacturers of sports equipment in Sweden and Austria evaluate and select their suppliers?
Within the theoretical part the reader of this thesis first of all gets an overview of supplier-buyer relationships and afterwards is informed about the structure of the supplier selection process, starting with the preparation step, followed by prequalification and evaluation steps and resulting in the final selection and the continuous controlling of the suppliers. In addition, common criteria which are necessary to evaluate suppliers are presented. Furthermore, the reader is provided with an insight into general evaluation models whereby four common theoretical methods are explained in detail (AHP, TCO, DCA, and DEA). Out of this theoretical data a conceptual model was created.
The empirical part consists of practical information which was provided by the three researched companies mentioned above through questionnaires and interviews. The analysed data concludes that the evaluation criteria which are given in theory are also used in practice. In addition, it was discovered that a further criteria category is applied within the researched companies. The values of the evaluation criteria depend on the goals of the respective company. The theoretical evaluation models on the other hand are not used by the examined sporting goods manufacturers. All of them use their own methods which are presented in the empirical as well as in the analytical part of this thesis. Finally, this thesis ends with a conclusion and with the answer of the research question.
Based on this thesis sporting goods manufacturers get an insight in specific supplier evaluation methods and thus gain the chance to learn how other companies within this industry evaluate and select their suppliers.

Sikorsky Aircraft Co. currently finds itself in a critical growth period, in terms of both sales contracts and supplier agreements. Popular supply chain strategies preach reduction and simplification of the supply base, but Sikorsky encounters "must-grow" situations with their supply base, due to factors like international offset provisions and capacity needs. Growth in the number of supplier relationships each year strains the supply management department and makes it difficult to complete full analyses of new suppliers. The goal of this research is to provide tools that combine the knowledge of experienced supply chain employees with statistical analysis in a package that will allow any member of the supply chain group to complete a thorough supplier risk analysis in the minimum amount of time. To address Sikorsky's supply chain risk, a concrete framework is desired that will ask the right questions about a supplier and produce an indicator of the level of risk involved in a supplier agreement. This project sets out to identify the connections between the sources of risk (risk drivers) and affected performance metrics (effects). These connections can be presented in an easy-to-use tool that enables quick yet thorough analyses. The framework links supplier analyses with the resulting performance, and uses the results to make data driven inferences about future supplier relationships. This allows quick and informed assessments by anyone in the supply chain group, regardless of their level of experience. The result of this project is a software-based risk assessment framework with scoring based on historical Sikorsky supplier performance.
(cont.) The data have revealed through statistical regression analysis strong correlations between a number of risk drivers and resulting supplier performance. These correlations can be used to score suppliers with similar attributes through the model. In addition, the model can be used as a knowledge retention mechanism of supplier performance data to facilitate future refinements of both the model and risk driver/effect correlations.

With increased global competition, companies find that they must adjust and adapt to a supply chain model that incorporates more strategic suppliers. Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technology Corporation, is no different as it seeks to streamline selection of suppliers to satisfy their business and manufacturing needs. In addition to improved product costs, low cost sourcing also expands its global footprint as emerging markets, such as China and India, continue to grow at phenomenal rates compared to Western markets. This research focused on development of a supplier evaluation process for Pratt & Whitney to meet its business goals. This introduces a change to the way that the company has historically operated. The first focus is to understand how to implement change within the company setting by introducing a formal supplier evaluation process. The second is to understand develop and refine the process to be utilized within Pratt & Whitney. This thesis focuses first on how to implement change within a company. The existing culture of the company must be evaluated to determine the approach to be taken. Within Pratt & Whitney's culture, research indicates that support from management and key influential personnel within the company are critical in producing a true change in the way the company conducts itself. Three different case studies are discussed that highlight the impact of this support on the successful implementation of change within the corporation. Secondly, this thesis researches the design and development of the supplier evaluation process. The most important aspect is to interview and listen to the needs of the customer. The success and failure of the system rests on being useful, intuitive, and simple. Through constant feedback, the tools were continually improved. In addition, information technology can be an enabler for business processes. With a well-designed system, IT can provide a secure, robust, scalable system for use in large corporations, like Pratt & Whitney.

Three different clustering schemes (4-clusters, 8-clusters, and 18-clusters) are analyzed to see the effect of number of clusters on the cluster means. A supplier selection model is constructed by the PROMETHEE method as was done in a former study at the same company. Two different scenarios are considered in the supplier selection phase: First, data from the former study are kept as they are. The second scenario considers a change of criteria weights. As a result, the qualified suppliers were found to be the same in both scenarios, but the rankings and net flows, which were inputs to the order allocation model, changed. The effects of these changes were discussed at a conceptual level, due to a lack of case data for the order allocation model.

Low-cost sourcing is a strategy many companies, including Pratt & Whitney, use to reduce part costs. As they increase their efforts to resource products to low-cost regions, Pratt & Whitney needs a robust process to effectively evaluate potential suppliers and identify those suppliers that are most capable of satisfying their manufacturing and business needs. Through the development of a Supplier Evaluation Process, this need is realized and a case study is presented that highlights the use of such a process. In addition, the topic of trust in buyer-supplier relationships is also explored. Through the process of developing new suppliers, Pratt & Whitney invests time, labor, knowledge and skills that they have developed to quickly improve a new supplier's business and manufacturing capabilities. The methods that Pratt & Whitney uses to accomplish this task, as well as the risks that they are subject to, are closely linked to what is deemed in the literature as trust building activities. This thesis seeks to understand the role of trust in the buyer-supplier relationship that Pratt & Whitney creates with low-cost sources and to highlight the benefits that Pratt & Whitney realizes as a result of these relationships.

For companies pursuing opportunities by expanding manufacturing to new markets, one major challenge is unavoidable: identifying and developing capable, local suppliers. In developing markets suppliers often lack the cutting edge technology, processes, and management methodologies driving the world's best businesses. The ability to identify and develop, relocate or build suppliers with World-Class capability becomes a competitive advantage. This thesis discusses the state of the art in Industrial Conglomerations (including Industrial Clusters and Supplier Cities) as well as their benefits and limitations. To analyze the potential opportunity for manufacturing firms considering supplier cities, we have developed a technical, operational, and financial framework for considering the opportunity and making key decisions about structure, location, and included processes. The framework includes a discussion regarding process selection based on an analysis of critical technical issues at each manufacturing step. This analysis considers the relationship of process capability to overall product performance and ultimately to product competitiveness.

With the recovery of semiconductor industry, semiconductor FABs have one after another expanded their capital to purchase main equipment in order to get enough capacity to get the leading place in the market; however the semiconductor tool suppliers are the key factor affecting the capital expenditure of the semiconductor FABs. So how to select semiconductor tool suppliers are the most important issues for semiconductor FABs. Since supplier selection is very important portion in the supply chain management, the purchasing requirements will be changed according to the development of technology; the criterions also need to be revised from time to time. According to previous researches, AHP is the most commonly used measure to find out important factors for creating weighting of each factor; in this research, cost of ownership is used as the major measure and also referencing the AHP weighting result to establish the effective method. So that both cost and quality can be measured in the meantime. This research is firstly, via surveying the historical data and thorough interview with semiconductor expert, analyzing the semiconductor suppliers selection criteria, and secondly find out the weighted point of each criterion by Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. Finally 6 dimensions are developed according to the research results: 「quality control」, 「cost efficiency」, 「supplier’s management profile」, 「technology capability」, 「logistics accuracy」and 「supporting ability」, and 23 items are proposed as indexes appropriate to be used for the evaluation of key equipment suppliers in semiconductor industry. The evaluation model is applied in this research to be used in a DRAM company and then proved as well as double confirmed by cost of ownership (C.o.O). The evaluation result appears that by using AHP weighting method at regular interval to obtain the ranking result for the supporting capability of all suppliers, and supported by C.o.O, can not only give the improve their competitivty but also help semiconductor FABs to select more accurate suppliers.

With the recent increasing of the environmental consciousness, there has been a tendency that international manufacturers have gradually implemented environmental consciousness as mandatory requirements. There are more and more stringent environmental standards internationally, such as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, Restriction of the use of Hazardous Substance, Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of Chemicals, Energy-related Products Directive and End-of-Life Vehicle, implemented by Europe Union. They all meet the market demand by following the idea of environmental protection and building the green demand chain and green purchasing standards. Therefore, the selection of the suppliers is the key in the purchasing and supply chain. Choosing qualified suppliers carefully can help enterprises provide low-cost and high-quality parts or raw materials and lower the risk of having a single supplier. Also, since international purchasing standards tend to be stricter and stricter, it can provide appropriate amendments. Using the consuming electronic products, OEM/ODM manufacturers, as an example, this research analyzes the standard of choosing suppliers under the green purchasing standard in this industry. Through Analytic Hierarchy Process, it helps enterprise decision-makers to organize data using a logical and hierarchy structure to simplify the complicated decision-making process to a set of supplier choosing module and to integrate all the analysis results in order to provide strategic recommendations for the industry to choose qualified suppliers when they are doing the evaluation. It is proven that when using this evaluation module to score and rank suppliers, it can effectively shorten the time of the evaluation, moreover, assist purchasing staff to select the best supplier effectively, efficiently, and objectively.

The competitiveness of an enterprise is affected by the capability of suppliers. So it is important to evaluate suppliers regularly to improve the performance of suppliers. In this study, we conducted expert questionnaire with Delphi method, and found that quality power, logistics, engineering capabilities and costs were the most important evaluation criteria of the performance of suppliers. Then we applied the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method to evaluate the relative importance between criteria to construct the weighting system of hierarchical criteria structure. The evaluation model of the performance of suppliers then could be established, and the priority of criteria can be determined. In the study, we have learned that "quality power" is the most important criteria, and In-coming QC, In-process QC, Out-going QC are the most important sub-criteria. The enterprises and suppliers should focus more on these items. This evaluation model could effectively evaluate the performance of fire escape lighting suppliers, and the assessment results could serve as improving direction and reference to enhance their competitiveness.

This target of the research is the global top 15 semiconductor equipment suppliers, gathering the financial information of each supplier from 2002 to 2006. The evaluation index is based on the following factors: size, growth, profit, efficiency and risk. The grey relation model of multiple objective decision-making is harnessed to do the analysis and prioritize with a view to comparing the competitiveness among the suppliers. The objective Grey Relation Model analysis reveals the niche of semiconductor industry is transnational organization, harnessing diversification operating strategies to enlarge revenue, fight for higher market share, and beef up competitiveness. Without a doubt, professional leading brands as well as relentless R&D are nothing but the approach to generating high margins and maintaining competitive edges. In terms of research and development, the U.S. is still dominating the development of key techniques in the field of semiconductor industry and holding the leading position. Given management strategies, American corporations put emphasis on margins, growing revenue and risk control. Instead, Japanese tend to expand its shares through stable and steady management.

With the increase of importance and dependence of supplier selection in supply chain management, it many enterprises pay more attention to developing partner relationships with their suppliers. One of the key points for purchase managers selects suitable suppliers. As a result, it’s a significant decision for them to select suppliers and allocate the ordering volumes. In this paper we proposed a model to solve the problems of supplier selection and order allocation in single part and multiple sourcing situations. The model includes expected loss cost and expected purchase cost from a set of suppliers. In case of multiple sourcing, the model takes into consideration the ability of suppliers to increase their output when one or more of the rest suppliers fail to deliver. We concern all-unit discount and incremental discount simultaneously, and it makes problems more complicated and difficult to be solved. Hence, we use the MATLAB method which minimizes total cost analysis to obtain the optimal supplier order allocation.

In the last ten years, the international Green Environment Protection has become the most important subject between governments and industries. The Research Agency of Nations have built the law of international Green Environment Protection and researched the tools for the appraisal of Green issues of industries via the system of evaluation that could get the correct Green Environment information from industries. These efforts also could assist sustainable management of industry. In this thesis, we built the appraisal system of electronics industry base on the law of RoHS and WEEE. First, we utilize the questionnaire investigation to understand the suppliers’ motivation of implementing the green environment protection. Second, we evaluate the performance factors via reviewed suppliers’ information and enforcement effort. The factors include environmental management system, document process system, procurement, and production management system. Third, we integrate experts’ assessment policy of questionnaire investigation to get the index weight by Expert Choice 11 and LINGO to perform the analysis of Analytical Hierarchy Process(AHP) and Choquet-fuzzy-integral model. Finally, we evaluate the green score of suppliers to check which meets the green environment protection in electronics industry then suggest the decision maker to choose the appropriate suppliers. With this research of supplier appraisal system, the performance of environmental management of the regulation restriction and customers’ requirement and that of document process system have the higher fuzzy weights. These two items indicate the importantance to the industries. Obviously, these evaluated results are due to the regulation WEEE and RoHS of European Union(EU). In addition, We observe that the suppliers with high capital emphasize much more on green environment protection, their evaluated scores are also higher.

As economic development between China and Taiwan, most traditional and labor intensive industries have had transferred to China extensively. However, the quality control level of their suppliers is more uneven than ever, which causes extra costs from rework and replacement. What is worse, someone’s fault in overheat of battery used in notebook computer has damaged its customers’ reputation seriously. Hence, electronic industries ought to choose suppliers for better competitiveness when faced with tremendous change. The purpose of this research is to help electronic industries construct a performance evaluation of connector suppliers. In the beginning, it collects related papers concerning connectors and performance as basis; then, surveys status quo of connector industries in Taiwan. Making use of five perspectives quoted from balanced scorecard (BSC), except for financial capability, customer service capability, process capability, learning and growth capability, the research modifies the perspectives into five by adopting flexibility response capability. Also, it searches for proper and positive performance evaluation method for connector purchasers by means of expertise survey and weighted indicators computed by analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The result of this research can offer not only performance evaluation for electronic companies to purchase connectors, but also infrastructure for further study of suppliers’ competitive strategy.

Outsourcing has broadened the concepts and enriched the activities of traditional subcontracting. It provides business owners a new direction of thinking of how to gain competitive strength by means of incorporating with the business partners to ensure the outsourcing activities are aligned to business strategies of long-term successfulness. In order to achieve such goal, it is necessary to have a measurement tool to indicate if there is any misalignment between the results of outsourcing activities and business long-term strategies. This thesis proposes a measurement methodology that encompasses two major tools, i.e. Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and Balanced Scoreboard, to be used to identify the successfulness of outsourcing. QFD is used convey the business requirements outsourcing the managerial attributes of successful outsourcing. Balanced Scoreboard is the core to ensure and guide the measurement processes to be aligned with business strategies. The outsourcing of die-casting processes of the valve industry in Taiwan is taken as an example to show the feasibility and strengths of the proposed methodology. The results show that there are 34 attributes, which can be used to indicate the degrees of successfulness of outsourcing. Further analysis extracts 8 dimensions of evaluating outsourcing activities. Additionally, 6 evaluation sheets are developed and can be selected by a valve manufacturing company based upon the quantity of outsourcing and the material of products.

Supplier selection is an important issue in supply chain management. In recent years, determining the best supplier in the supply chain has become a key strategic consideration in marketing researches. However, these decisions usually involve multi-goal and multi-criteria or qualitative and quantitative factors. The previous research force in qualitative criterions and ignore the quantitative factors for supplier selection. This study considering both tangible and intangible criteria proposes two integrated methods. First, this study use Taguchi loss function, analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and multi-choice goal programming (MCGP) model for solving the supplier selection problem. Second, it addressed fuzzy techniques for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) and MCGP approach to evaluate the best supplier. The advantage of these methods is that it allows decision makers to set multiple aspiration levels for supplier selection. The integrated models are illustrated by two examples in watch and food firms.

Expert interview method was adopted to summarize and analyze the considerable factors for the selection of domestic suppliers, which was taken as the supplier selection indicators of TFT-LCD supply chain management to understand the key factors of TFT-LCD supplier management. In addition the key differences on the selection indicators of domestic and foreign suppliers were analyzed to make reference for the construction of supplier category management and provide reference guidelines and recommendations for enterprises’ selection of suppliers. According to most experts, the three basic indicators of supplier selection were quality, delivery, and cost, which were relatively beneficial to the manufacturers’ control on estimated cost and cash flow, as well as to the stability of incoming material which could lower the management costs and guarantee a reasonable profit, thus ensure stable supply quality. The indicators were consistent for both domestic and foreign supplier selection. However, international trade and exchange rate issues were still concerning portion assessment in the consideration of foreign parts suppliers.

Semiconductor ceramics include ceramic material and ceramic parts / tools in IC fabrication. Because Taiwan foundry capacity is the best in the world, the demand for semiconductor ceramics is growing as rapidly as the growth of IC production. China is determined to establish its IC industry, which may become a major supplier of ICs to the world. Hence, China’s market for semiconductor ceramics is something to be expected. This research gave a thorough description of the background and current status of global semiconductor ceramic industry. The main goal was to establish a Multi-Criteria Decision Making assessment model, which can be used to evaluate semiconductor ceramic suppliers by vendors or representatives of semiconductor equipment manufacturers. Major semiconductor equipment vendors from Japan and the US were surveyed to come up with weighting factors for each evaluation criteria. The study results showed that a supplier’s technical capability is the most critical consideration. Among all criteria, “price and payment terms” has the highest weight, “quality stability” has the next highest weight, and “technical superiority” has the third highest weight. Comparing the five world leading semiconductor ceramic suppliers, Kyocera has the highest utility score according to overall survey responses.

Abstract This thesis specially addresses performance evaluation of auto-assembler suppliers in after market (AM). In order to tackle these issues, this study adopts data envelopment analysis (DEA) to measure the relative efficiency of resource utilization of auto assemblers in Taiwan. The input variables of the proposed DEA model include the operational indices and the financial indices. They are “the number of employees”, “the annual asset”, “the average inventory time”, and “the average production time”. The output variable is “the annual revenue” Considering the data imprecision about these two variables, “the number of employees” and “the annual revenue”, this thesis adopts three approaches of imprecise DEA to evaluate auto-assembler suppliers’ relative efficiency and to deal with the data imprecision. All approaches are based on the DEA methodology, including α-cut DEA approach, possibility FDEA approach and IDEA approach. In order to follow the principle “homogeneous” of DMUs when applying DEA model to evaluate efficiency, this study categorizes auto-assembler suppliers into auto-component suppliers and auto-accessories suppliers, by means of the products. This study sends questionnaires to the 303 Taiwan auto assemblers of after market, and 75 questionnaires are received. 39 auto-assembler suppliers are selected out of 75 responses. All of our survey firms are Small Medium Enterprises (SEMs). This thesis has successfully applied α-cut DEA, PFDEA and IDEA approaches to evaluate auto assemblers’ performance. We also find advantage and disadvantage of each approach. Besides, the efficiency score of comparison analysis, OTE analysis and PTE analysis are provided to the auto assemblers for their reference. The main research finding indicates that Taiwan auto assemblers are already operating at respectable levels of pure technical efficiency. The thesis finds that the overall technical inefficiency of auto assemblers of Taiwan is caused from the scale inefficiency. The implication of results reflect the auto assemblers operate well in company management even if the most part of auto assemblers in Taiwan are SMEs in realistic situation.
