Abstract:
After discussing the reasons for Facebook’s popularity among adolescents, we proceed by analyzing the different types of superego and their structure during the great psychic upheaval of this developmental period. The prevalent use of the logic of orality and anality by Facebook causes regression in adolescents and may provoke a de-eroticization or even a desexualization of the Oedipal superego. This puts the cultural and the archaic superegos to the forefront, which may ultimately result in complete avoidance of sexuality, as it is experienced as dangerous. All of these factors may threaten the structuring capacity of the categories of lack and desire.

Abstract:
This paper explores the possibilities of complementing Freud’s theory of human nature with the doctrine of St Thomas Aquinas on the virtue of prudence (phronesis). The paper builds on the foundation laid down by Freud’s theory of the id, the ego, and the superego in relation to moral behaviour. However, it takes a rather different approach to moral decision-making and behaviour, culminating in the author’s creation of the concept of the moral-ego. What is being raised in this paper is a concern that Freud’s theory reduces morality to the dictates of the superego.

Abstract:
This article offers a psychoanalytic explanation of why blacks commit a disproportionate number—half—of violent crimes in the United States. Slavery and its crippling psychological effects are discussed, as are the devastating psychological consequences of the hundred years of discrimination, segregation, and antiblack terror that followed. The conclusion reached is that black aggression was stimulated inordinately by all this, while simultaneously the black superego was decisively weakened and rendered incomplete and conflicted. These psychological difficulties have persisted and become endemic among the poor, uneducated, lower-class blacks who populate the rotting core of many American cities. Unlike their parents and grandparents, however, they no longer fear imminent bodily harm or death at the hands of violent whites and no longer turn their aggression back upon themselves and become depressed, but feel free to externalize their aggression in periodic riots and violent crime. The solutions suggested in this article include the elimination of social policies that stimulate the aggression of blacks by threatening their sense of self-worth, and the promotion of social policies that help to strengthen their superegos; e.g., minimizing the number of fatherless black households. Ways of using the criminal law to reinforce the black superego are also considered.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Just as the couple becomes the repository of both partners' conscious and unconscious sexual fantasies and desires, and of their consciously and unconsciously activated internalized object relations, so does the couple activate both partners' conscious and unconscious superego functions. The interaction of the partners' superego over time results in the forging of a new system, which I am calling the couple's superego. The functions of the couple's joint superego structure is described, as are the symptoms of superego pathology in the couple's love life. The vicissitudes of gratitude and guilt, of stereotyping and conventionality, of deceptiveness and long-range destructive and self-destructive scenarios, are explored in the context of a spectrum reflecting the severity of joint superego pathology. A clinical case vignette illustrates some of these developments in a couple's life.

Abstract:
This paper shows how superego conflicts can affect and disturb supervision. On the one hand the supervisee's wish is to shift the responsibility for his or her group on to the supervisor; on the other, the supervisee would like to be independent and autonomous, to conduct his or her group the way he or she wants, without being forced to tell anyone about it. The supervisor has to refuse to take over the supervisee's superego functions completely, but he or she does have responsibility for ensuring that the trainee will be a capable group-analyst at the end of training. The supervisor has to watch out that the supervisee's group-analytic superego is neither too loose nor too strict. Supervision peer groups are of inestimable help in reaching these difficult and complicated, but very fascinating, goals of supervision. The use of the supervision group as a stage for hidden conflicts of the reported group has further advantages.

Abstract:
The research refers to the relationship between lies and personality. In the present study, we started from the following assumption: the superego of persons of the same culture and same generation tends to be constant regarding content and strength. That is, the superego of 21 years romanian people tends to follow a certain pattern. This assumption is motivated by the fact that in Romania, the middle class is by far the majority; among the middle class, social perceptions tend not to vary too much, those of 21 years were born in the communist period and their superego formed before the revolution, which generated a strong similarity in shaping their superego, the kind of education both formal and informal resembles very much for Romania (see Romanian proverbs), etc. This assumption leads us to the following statement: given that the superego is similar for most Romanians of the same age, it tends to refer similarly to lying as social value as well as internalized prohibition, and its censorship. So, the lie will have substantially the same value and interpretation for all young people in this category, which will tend to refer to it similarly. This leads to a very simple conclusion: given that in the Romanian culture, as in other cultures, the lie is disapproved, people who lie will experience a conflict between the censorship of the superego and the desire of the ego, which is reflected in the sense of guilt.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This research project studies Pip’s ego fluctuations in Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations. Freud’s division of the human psyche into id, ego and superego is appropriate for the analysis of the rise and fall of the hero in his pursuit to attain gentlemanhood. Four main questions have been addressed: First, what makes up Pip’s id? Second, what are the main components of his superego? Third, does Pip’s ego succeed or fail in striking a balance between his id and superego? In what ways does it fail? And fourth, how does Pip’s ego eventually succeed in striking a balance between his id and superego? The study finds out that Pip’s id is demonstrated through his fascination with high-class lifestyle and relinquishment of common life. It shows that his superego is constructed from the hurdles that prevent him from pursuing gentlemanhood, namely past common life restraints and present high class deficiencies. It also demonstrates how Pip’s faulty ego comes as a result of his frustration at high class lifestyles and resentment of his old common life. The study eventually reveals that two important factors contribute to the success of Pip’s ego: His reconciliation with the past and appreciation of the present in order to have more realistic expectations of the future.

Abstract:
Adaptive design refers to experimental design where the next sample point is determined by information from previous experiments. This article presents a constrained optimization algorithm known as superEGO (a variant of the EGO algorithm of Schonlau, Welch, and Jones) that can create adaptive designs using kriging approximations. Our primary goal is to illustrate that superEGO is well-suited to generating adaptive designs which have many advantages over competing methods. The approach is demonstrated on a novel human-reach experiment where the selection of sampling points adapts to the individual test subject. Results indicate that superEGO is effective at satisfying the experimental objectives.

Abstract:
This paper offers a psychological interpretation of the character Tony in Julian Barnes’ The Sense of an Ending. The study is divided into two sections. In the first section, the character of Tony is analyzed using Freud's theory of psychoanalysis, focusing on the id, ego, and superego and how Tony’s id has prevailed over his superego in most of the actions in the first part of the novel. It presents a big store of aggression and conflicting ideas. Some examples are provided in evidence of how the ego tries to solve the conflict between the id and the superego and supports the superego over the id. The second section of the study interprets some psychological core issues developed and manifested in the life of Tony, such as fear of abandonment, fear of betrayal, insecure or unstable sense of self, and low self-esteem. Throughout the analysis, the objective is to shed light on the character’s psyche in order to interpret his personality and self-destructive behavior using Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis.
