Abstract:
The intellectual and political roots of present-day China lie in the late imperial era and the transition to modern statehood. As the last chain of the thousands years of dynastic rule in China, the Qing Dynasty ended in 1911 with a revolution. Even though the Republican regime was immediately established after their revolution, it took three decades until thenew government (People&rsquo
s Republic of China) achieved full sovereignty on the territory. The thesis argues that the 1911 Revolution is a major turning point in Chinese transformation not only because of the regime change but also the ideological shift towards modern statehood. In this study, first, the social forces and actors on the eve of the Revolution are analyzed. The gentry-domination of society and the power relations within the forces involved in the Revolution - especially the intellectuals and the military - appear to be the two major reasons why the transition was not completed with the Revolution. The second focus of the study: the process of breaking with the past. In other words, how was the shift in people&rsquo
s mind achieved? In China, this turning point did not coincide with the 1911 Revolution and/or regime change. It came later in 1910s, reaching its peak in 1919, with the New Culture Movement of the May Fourth intellectuals. There had been some influential intellectuals building a nationalist discourse even before the May Fourth Movement (e.g. Liang Qichao, reformist and ideologue in late Qing dynasty) but the radical and outspoken tone of the New Culture Movement achieved the grounds for a shift in minds. I will briefly analyze the intellectual work of the period and its politicization. A special emphasis is given on Sun Yat-sen&rsquo
s political and intellectual contribution to the transition since he was not only a major political activist but also a theoretician whose works (Three Principles of People) have been influential on China&rsquo
s nation-building process.

Abstract:
This thesis project aims to repurpose an abandoned railway tunnel in Eriksdalslunden, Stockholm into an experimental activity/farming center for the purpose of teaching people of all ages different farming methods. The learning center implements exciting farming techniques such as aquaponics, where plants get their nutrients from live fish.  This center also teaches about the new technologies that make it possible to grow plants beneath the earth´s surface. These technologies harness the benefits of the sun into a concentrated form and then leads it deep underground. Repurposing unused underground spaces such as this can help develop our cities in a more efficient way.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of self-reported skin cancer risk outcome measures proposed as standards by prevention experts to aggregated estimates of behavior from weekly diaries. Weekly electronic diaries of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) behaviors, initially validated by comparison with daily electronic diaries, were used to assess the accuracy of commonly used end-of-summer self-reported measures among 250 adults. Results revealed low biases, and good correspondence between simple open-ended self-reported estimates of days outside, hours outside, sunbathing days and hours, and days outside when not protected by either sunscreen, long-sleeved shirts, hats, or shade. Rating scale measures commonly used in the current literature and those recently recommended as standards by a workshop of experts showed evidence of being non-interval and lacking precision for more frequent behavior (e.g., >1 h sun exposure daily). These data indicated that open-ended frequency self-reports of skin cancer risk behaviors that follow procedures designed to increase accuracy were reliable over a summer-long period.

Cirtain, Jonathan Wesley. "The Solar Extreme Ultra-Violet Corona: Resolved Loops and the Unresolved Active Region Corona." Thesis, Montana State University, 2005. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2005/cirtain/CirtainJ0505.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
In this work, physical characteristics of the solar corona as observed in the Extreme Ultra-Violet (EUV) regime are investigated. The focus will be the regions of intense EUV radiation generally found near the locations of sunspots. These regions are commonly called active regions. Multiple space-based observing platforms have been deployed in the last decade; it is possible to use several of these observatories in combination to develop a more complete picture of the solar corona. Joint Observing Program 146 was created to collect spectroscopic intensities using the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer on Solar and Heliospheric Observatory and EUV images using NASA's Transition Region and Coronal Explorer. The emission line intensities are analyzed to develop an understanding of the temperature and density of the active region coronal plasma. However, the performance of the CDS instrument in the spatial and temporal domains is limited and to compensate for these limitations, data collected by the TRACE instrument provide a high spatial and temporal resolution set of observations. One of the most exciting unsolved problems in solar astrophysics is to understand why the corona maintains a temperature roughly two orders of magnitude higher than the underlying material. A detailed investigation of the coronal emission has provided constraints on models of the heating mechanism, since the temperature density and evolution of emission rates for multiple ionic species are indicative of the mechanism(s) working to heat the corona. The corona appears to consist of multiple unresolved structures as well as resolved active region structures, called coronal loops. The purpose of the present work is to determine the characteristics of the unresolved background corona. Using the characterizations of the coronal unresolved background, results for loops after background subtraction are also presented. This work demonstrates the magnitude of the unresolved coronal emission with respect to the total emission along the line of sight, and the relationship of the coronal background emission to the resolved loop emission. It is apparent from this analysis that the unresolved corona is the dominant source of radiation in active regions. Additionally, the unresolved active region coronal emission can be characterized by hydrostatic scaling laws.

Jung, Alesia Marie, and Alesia Marie Jung. "Sun Sensitivity and Sun Protective Behaviors during Sun Exposure in Indoor Office Workers in the Midwestern United States." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/621165.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Sun exposure is strongly associated with skin cancer. Sun protection to reduce harmful effects of sun exposure, including skin cancer, is encouraged. However, sun sensitivity, a possible confounder of the association between sun exposure and sun protection, is often overlooked. Objectives: This study examined how sun exposure and sun protection behaviors among indoor workers vary between sun sensitive and less sun sensitive individuals. Methods: Diaries over 45 days (August and September of 2009) from indoor workers in the Midwest were examined. Diaries included daily sun exposure, sun protection, and sun sensitivity. Sun sensitivity was measured by determination of fair and non-fair complexion, categorized based on inability to tan and tendency to sunburn. Sun exposure was compared between fair and non-fair complexion. Total exposure (sunrise to sunset) was examined, along with exposure between 10 am and 4 pm, and long exposure between 10 am and 4 pm (at least 60 minutes). Percentages of time in the sun spent practicing sun protection were reported by study participants with fair and non-fair complexion. Logistic regression was used to determine odds ratios between fair complexion and mean sun exposure and mean sun protection times. Results: Fair complexioned individuals spent less time in the sun than non-fair complexioned individuals. In addition, fair complexioned individuals spent greater percentages of time practicing sun protection behaviors while they were in the sun. They were more likely to practice sun protection behaviors related to sunscreen application and protective clothing, notably, wearing a long-sleeved shirt. Conclusion: Fair complexioned individuals spend less time in the sun and practice more sun protective behaviors than non-fair complexioned individuals. These interrelations between sun sensitivity, sun protection and amount of sun exposure suggest that controlling for potential confounding when examining one of these factors and skin cancer may be challenging.

O?Keefe, Stephen A. "Autonomous Sun-Direction Estimation Using Partially Underdetermined Coarse Sun Sensor Configurations." Thesis, University of Colorado at Boulder, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3704787.

Full text
Abstract:

In recent years there has been a significant increase in interest in smaller satellites as lower cost alternatives to traditional satellites, particularly with the rise in popularity of the CubeSat. Due to stringent mass, size, and often budget constraints, these small satellites rely on making the most of inexpensive hardware components and sensors, such as coarse sun sensors (CSS) and magnetometers. More expensive high-accuracy sun sensors often combine multiple measurements, and use specialized electronics, to deterministically solve for the direction of the Sun. Alternatively, cosine-type CSS output a voltage relative to the input light and are attractive due to their very low cost, simplicity to manufacture, small size, and minimal power consumption. This research investigates using coarse sun sensors for performing robust attitude estimation in order to point a spacecraft at the Sun after deployment from a launch vehicle, or following a system fault. As an alternative to using a large number of sensors, this thesis explores sun-direction estimation techniques with low computational costs that function well with underdetermined sets of CSS. Single-point estimators are coupled with simultaneous nonlinear control to achieve sun-pointing within a small percentage of a single orbit despite the partially underdetermined nature of the sensor suite. Leveraging an extensive analysis of the sensor models involved, sequential filtering techniques are shown to be capable of estimating the sun-direction to within a few degrees, with no a priori attitude information and using only CSS, despite the significant noise and biases present in the system. Detailed numerical simulations are used to compare and contrast the performance of the five different estimation techniques, with and without rate gyro measurements, their sensitivity to rate gyro accuracy, and their computation time. One of the key concerns with reducing the number of CSS is sensor degradation and failure. In this thesis, a Modified Rodrigues Parameter based CSS calibration filter suitable for autonomous on-board operation is developed. The sensitivity of this method's accuracy to the available Earth albedo data is evaluated and compared to the required computational effort. The calibration filter is expanded to perform sensor fault detection, and promising results are shown for reduced resolution albedo models. All of the methods discussed provide alternative attitude, determination, and control system algorithms for small satellite missions looking to use inexpensive, small sensors due to size, power, or budget limitations.

Abstract:
AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF DIANE M. LAND, for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Health Education, presented on December 3, 2014, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: PSYCHOSOCIAL PREDICTORS OF HIGH SCHOOL ADOLESCENTS' SUN-TANNING AND SUN-PROTECTIVE BEHAVIORS MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Roberta Ogletree Background: The incidence of skin cancer among adolescents and young adults is increasing in the United States (American Cancer Society, 2014). Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure via sun-tanning is considered an important risk factor for development of melanoma. Sun-induced skin damage and sun-tanning habits are initiated in early life and promoted through later sun exposure patterns. Social norms, appearance attitudes, and perceptions of fitness and health attributed to sun-tanned skin and tanning bed usage have been established. The primary aim of this study was to investigate high school adolescents' sun-related attitudes and behaviors through a theoretical framework of psychosocial constructs grounded primarily in Bandura's (1986) Social Cognitive Theory. Assessing the differences in predictors of adolescents' UVR sun-tanning and sun-protective behaviors (including sunless tanning) has the potential to aid in developing age-appropriate strategies to prevent the adoption of sun-tanning habits and reinforce more health enhancing behaviors. Methods: This research study utilized a quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive research design to assess the attitudes, motivations, and behaviors regarding sun-tanning and sun-protective practices of high school adolescents in rural Southern Illinois. A purposeful sample of 9 - 12th grade students (n = 900) enrolled in physical education class during the fall 2014 semester were invited to complete a self-report paper and pencil survey consisting of 56 Likert-type items and five demographic variables. Results: A total of 156 adolescents received parental permission and completed the survey, providing a 17.3% response rate. Intentional sun-tanning (UVR exposure) continues to be prevalent. Study participants reported sun-tanning more often and had a higher number of sunburns within the past twelve months that in previous national studies. Participants from low socio-economic status (SES) were more likely to outdoor suntan and use sunless tanning lotions, gels or creams than their not low SES counterparts. For sun-tanning behaviors, a significant amount of the variance in mean sun-risk behavior score was explained by the constructs situation, outcome expectations, and value expectancies. Situation, outcome expectations, value expectancies, and self-efficacy were all predictive of outdoor sun-tanning; whereas only outcome expectations were predictive of indoor sun-tanning. Self-efficacy explained a significant proportion of variance in sun-protective behavior mean score. Outcome expectations were predictive of both sunless tanning with lotions, creams or gels and spray tanning product use. Sunless tanning appears to be used as both an additive behavior for those reporting the highest frequency of indoor tanning and a substitution behavior for adolescents who reported never indoor tanning.

Abstract:
“Walking Towards the Sun," for string quartet, is a collection of musical meditations on my experiences hiking the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia. The scale, structure, and musical language of the composition are related to the Trail. Lasting almost eight hours, the piece is massive and idealistic. It is comprised of 80 movements that give unique interpretations to places and experiences from my hike. The movements are organized to trace my journey southward from Maine to Georgia. The musical material utilizes both abstract and symbolic expressions to reflect my experiences on the Trail. The sound of the composition transports the listener by suggesting emotional states reflective of my journey. This paper will introduce the composition and explain its connection to my hike. The first section of this paper gives the premise behind my thesis and suggests a precedence in other composers’ work. This is followed by an overview of the composition’s structure and its relationship to the trail. Section 3 delves into specific musical techniques and procedures utilized in the work and an explanation of the instrumentation choice. The paper concludes with an aesthetic statement, suggesting a context for the composition as a work of art. A complete version of the score, a table detailing the textural, harmonic, and other contributions to the works structure, and a program note for the composition’s performance are included in the appendix.

Abstract:
From the beginning of architectural history, climate has been a major controlling force in building design. A building’s envelope must keep out the elements and minimize great temperature changes as well as admit light. Massive masonry walls were employed as thermal storage to alleviate excessive temperature swings. The thickness of these thermal barriers affected lighting conditions within the structure. Sunshine was prevented from reaching the interior. Instead, the daylight was softened and diffused as it reflected and bounced along the fenestration’s thick walls. Not only was the skin used for thermal control, it also provided illumination for the interior. Daylight was the primary method of illumination which was supplemented with candles and oil lamps. Because the skin of a building was the only mediator between the interior and exterior climates, all perforations had to be carefully considered. Buildings were designed to make use of the daylight. Activities which needed illumination were limited to daytime hours. Rooms were placed along the exterior walls of buildings to make the most of the daylight illumination. Building depth was restricted by how deeply daylight could penetrate into a room. Interior courtyards were implemented to illuminate interior spaces that could not be accommodated by exterior windows. People who wanted to remain within the confines of their building but needed large quantities of light to complete their various tasks would gather here. The courtyards lent a sense of community to its inhabitants. People were able to communicate with one another both verbally and visually. Daylight did more than illuminate interiors. It provided a constantly changing visual atmosphere. The light which passed through the fenestrations reflected the ever-changing movements of the sun and clouds. Without looking out a window, one could sense the moods of the day as well as the passage of time, the atmosphere within was always changing. With the advent of the Industrial Revolution, building design was changed. Climate could be ignored in building design. Inventions such as electric lighting and forced air circulation replaced windows. Rooms no longer depended on their proximity to the exterior face for illumination. Large workspaces could be partitioned into small individual offices. With smaller space and individual offices, employees no longer had direct access to one another. The uniform electric lighting produced a static atmosphere. The visual atmosphere and the sense of community that came from courtyard design was lost. Was it really necessary to lose the subtle qualities produced by ancient building methods just to have modern amenities? Was there not some way to use technology to enhance those ancient qualities? At a time when most architects shunned the old ways to embrace the new technology, three architects stood out because they chose to incorporate the new building methods with the old. The three architects were Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Kahn and Alvar Aalto. These men were able to design buildings based on the climatic conditions of a site and integrate those designs with twentieth century technology.

Abstract:
This thesis is an attempt to address the phenomenon of the sun in architecture. Particular use is made of the notions of warmth, light, shadow and energy as form generators. Of specific concern is how one structure can work in harmony within its environment and existing constraints.

An analysis of an existing building is performed, with an eye to its strengths and weaknesses as a residence. It is an interesting challenge for an architect to take an undistinguished building - one designed for a bygone age of surplus energy - to identify those substantive elements to be retained and reused, those which are to be eliminated or substantially altered, and then harmonize them, in conjunction with a new plan, in order to create a warm, energy efficient, aesthetically appealing, and ultimately livable family residence. The possibilities concerning the highest and best changes to be made to improve the use of an existing structure are first identified.

This thesis shows how a physically and spiritually cold, unattractive, and unremarkable building, one of little or no architectural merit, can be transformed - through improved natural light and heat - to create a better environment for a family.

Abstract:
In this thesis the notion of a theoretical approach to the beginning stages of designing lighting for a theatrical production will be discussed. The topic being researched is: How a theoretical approach to entering the design process will enhance the final lighting design. The target audience for this study is theatrical lighting designers. A theoretical approach, in this case to the beginning of the design process, could be described as utilizing current dramatic theories to develop a better understanding for the design of this production. In order to better understand this topic one would need to know how the process of lighting design is typically created and where the theoretical approach is implemented. An issue with this approach is that the short period allowed for the design process does not allow sufficient time to utilize a theoretical approach in a real world setting. A way of determining if this process is effective is through personal self review. Journaling and discussion with my advisor for this production will be the method of data collection. The method of validation will be a self reflection at the end of the final performance. An issue with the collection process is its reliance on personal opinions, including the author's. There are no ethical issues relating to this study. When applied, a theoretical approach to the design process will enhance the quality of the final lighting design through allowing the designer to be better prepared for a specific scene that he/she is struggling with.

Khotyaintsev, Mykola. "Radar Probing of the Sun." Doctoral thesis, Uppsala University, Department of Astronomy and Space Physics, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-7192.

Full text
Abstract:

This thesis is dedicated to the theory of solar radar experiments. The Sun exhibits a variety of interesting and complicated physical phenomena, examined mainly through analysis of its radiation. Active solar probing by radar provides an alternative possibility to study the Sun. This concept was tested originally in the 1960's by solar radar experiments at El Campo, Texas, but due to an insufficient level of technology at that time the experimental results were of a poor quality and thus difficult to interpret. Recently, the space weather program has stimulated interest in this topic. New experimental proposals require further development of the theory of solar radar experiments to meet the current knowledge about the Sun and the modern level of technology.

Three important elements of solar radar experiments are addressed in this thesis: i) generation of wave turbulence and radiation in the solar corona, ii) propagation of the radar signal to the reflection point, and iii) reflection (scattering) of the incident radar signal from the Sun.

It is believed that the radio emission of solar type II and III bursts occurs due to conversion of Langmuir waves, generated by electron beams, into electromagnetic radiation (plasma emission mechanism). The radar signal propagating through the emission source region can get scattered by the Langmuir turbulence and finally deliver the observer insights of the physics of this turbulence. Such process of scattering is considered in this thesis in the weak turbulence limit by means of the wave-kinetic theory. Scattering frequency shifts, scattering cross-sections, efficiency of scattering (the coefficient of absorption due to scattering), optical depths, and the spectra of the scattered signal are estimated.

Type II solar radio bursts are known to be associated with the electron beams accelerated by interplanetary shocks. From their dynamic spectra the properties of the shocks and regions in the vicinity of the shock are usually inferred by assuming a plasma emission mechanism. In situ observations of the source region of type II burst, presented in this thesis, suggest that an additional emission mechanism may be present. This mechanism is related to energetic particles crossing the shock front, known in electrodynamics as transition radiation.

Plasma density fluctuations are known to scatter radio waves and thus broadening their angular dispersion. In the thesis this process is studied in the solar wind and terrestrial electron and ion foreshocks on the basis of in situ observations of density fluctuations. It is shown that the angular broadening of the radar signal is negligible in this regions.

The results of this thesis can be applied for the preparation of future solar radar experiments and interpretation of experimental data.

This works explores how to work with Event scores as a design method. In the search for what is real or what is reality the already existing things are being explored. The work started with investigating suitable ways to work with the moving body in the design process, with the aim to find a method that gave control but also left some parameters to the undecided and ambiguous. Convinced that this will lead to something new some parts of the process were highlighted and re-formulated.

Abstract:
This Master of Science thesis work is written in Stockholm 2014 in collaboration with Scania CV AB and as a part of the Technical Design Master education at Royal Institute of Technology. The project focuses on interior sun visors in Scania trucks. The objective of the thesis work was divided into two parts; to map when, how and in what way sun glare becomes a problem to truck drivers and also develop a concept that solves those problems.Scania is a well-known manufacturer of trucks and has a profile that stands for high quality. The trucks produced by Scania are considered to be among the best regarding reliability and driver environment. Today, the sun visors that are mounted in Scania cabs are traditional and similar to the ones in cars. A result from interviews with, and observations of, drivers showed that there are difficulties when it comes to activating the passenger visor. To be able to reach the visor on the passenger’s side, many drivers are forced to stand up from the seat, something that jeopardises traffic safety.Initially, a mapping of research reports that have been made about sun glare measuring methods was made. The question was whether the work at Scania would benefit from these methods or not. The conclusion is that, in large context, this probably would not be the case. Measurements of trucks and competitor vehicles were made in order to clarify and map the different sun glare solutions that exist today. This was also a way to develop a suggestion for future measuring methods. From the knowledge gathered, several concepts of various kinds were developed. Selected concepts were prototyped and evaluated by drivers. Finally two concepts were mounted in an actual cab and compared by users. This led to the final concept choice. The final concept consists of a parted sun visor, as before, but with the difference that these parts can be coupled. The driver no longer needs to endanger him/herself and others when activating the sun visor, since they can easily be connected and folded down. There is an on/off mode at the driver’s visor that allows the driver to decide whether the visors should be attached or not. Inside both visors is an extended part that can be pulled down and placed in different positions to fully cover the driver vertically.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was two-fold. First, an investigation into the design process was conducted in order to find the influences, which bring forth architecture from various methods of play and interaction with materials, media and idea forming. This work was documented with several stop motion animations and compiled in the form of a movie that is attached to this book. Following this examination, a more traditional design method was used to create a Montessori School that would draw inspiration from its position between the earth and sun to guide its architecture. The result of this method is evident through the following drawings and models.

Abstract:
For humans, architecture is a shelter for dwelling. People seek protection and a sense of belonging in their surroundings. Architecture should reveal the time passage, changes in weather and the character of the place in order to make a place for people to dwell. Sunlight, as an abstraction of the sun, can be received by architecture and connect the place with the universe. This thesis explores how to apply sunlight research as a meaningful tool in architecture design. The research focused on two criteria: orientation and identity. Orientation and identity are the two elements that make a location into a place and make a space into a room.

Abstract:
Overexposure to the sun is associated with an increased risk of melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer, but indications of improvements in sun protection behavior are poor. Attempts to identify emerging themes in skin cancer control have largely been driven by groups of experts from a single field. In December 2016, 19 experts from various disciplines convened for Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Skin Cancer, a 2-day meeting hosted by the National Academy of Sciences. The group discussed knowledge gaps, perspectives on sun exposure, implications for skin cancer risk and other health outcomes, and new directions. Five themes emerged from the discussion: (1) The definition of risk must be expanded, and categories for skin physiology must be refined to incorporate population diversities. (2) Risky sun exposure often co-occurs with other health-related behaviors. (3) Messages must be nuanced to target at-risk populations. (4) Persons at risk for tanning disorder must be recognized and treated. (5) Sun safety interventions must be scalable. Efficient use of technologies will be required to sharpen messages to specific populations and to integrate them within multilevel interventions. Further interdisciplinary research should address these emerging themes to build effective and sustainable approaches to large-scale behavior change.

Despite the enthusiasm that prevailed during sub-Saharan Africa’s initial wave of independence, representations of quality of life in the region over the last half-century focused on themes that typically characterize failed states: maladministration, violence and conflict, disease, impoverishment and suffering. Although considerable hardship persists, the subcontinent experienced impressive economic growth over the last decade. This, together with increasing gains from state-led social spending, has prompted a new narrative that speaks of promise and opportunity. Against this backdrop, the chapter reviews quality of life in the region using select objective and subjective wellbeing measures. The results confirm the general pattern of recent social progress, though lingering deprivation, inequality and often difficult political conditions. While this situation is reflected in relatively low life satisfaction evaluations, it is also accompanied by a resolute optimism that attests to the resilience of the region’s citizens in the face of adversity. The chapter also assesses the influence of certain objective conditions on subjective wellbeing at the macro-level.

Seeing as how the leadership of both the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China have claimed a sense of inheritance and legitimacy from the political philosophy of Sun Yat-sen, it seems a paradox how different the political situations are in their respective domains. It is the intent of this thesis to discern how prioritizing different elements of Sun Yat-sen's political theory resulted in divergent decisions made by the leaders of the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party, which in turn help explain conditions found in the Republic of China on Taiwan and the People's Republic of China

Abstract:
For many centuries, the study of the Sun has been an important testbed for understanding stars that are further away. One of the first astronomical observations Galileo Galilei made in 1612 with the newly invented telescope concerned the sunspots, and in 1814, Joseph von Fraunhofer employed his new spectroscope to discover the absorption lines in the solar spectrum that are now named after him. Even though more refined and new modes of observation are now available than in the days of Galileo and Fraunhofer, the study of the Sun is still high on the agenda of contemporary science, due to three guiding interests. The first is connected to the ages-old human striving to understand the structure of the larger world surrounding us. Modern telescopes, some of them even based outside the Earth’s atmosphere in space, have succeeded in observing astronomical objects that are billions of light- years away. However, for practical reasons precision data that are important for understanding stars can still only be gained from the Sun. In a sense, the observations of far-away astronomical objects thus call for a more precise study of the closeby, of the Sun, for their interpretation. The second interest stems from the human desire to understand the essence of the world, in particular the elementary particles of which it consists. Large accelerators have been constructed to produce and collide these particles. However, man-made machines can never be as luminous as the Sun when it comes to producing particles. Solar neutrinos have thus served not only as an astronomical tool to understand the Sun’s inner workings, but their behavior on the way from the Sun to the Earth is also being studied with the aim to understand their nature and interactions. The third interest is strictly connected to life on Earth. A multitude of research has shown that even relatively slight changes in the Earth’s climate may strongly affect the living conditions in a number of densely populated areas, mainly near the ocean shore and in arid regions. Thus, great effort is expended on the study of greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. Also the Sun, via the solar irradiance and via the effects of the so-called solar wind of magnetic particles on the Earth’s atmosphere, may affect the climate. There is no proof linking solar effects to short-term changes in the Earth’s climate. However, such effects cannot be excluded, either, making it necessary to study the Sun. The experiments summarized in the present work contribute to the present-day study of our Sun by repeating, in the laboratory, some of the nuclear processes that take place in the core of the Sun. They aim to improve the precision of the nuclear cross section data that lay the foundation of the model of the nuclear reactions generating energy and producing neutrinos in the Sun. In order to reach this goal, low-energy nuclear physics experiments are performed. Wherever possible, the data are taken in a low-background, underground environment. There is only one underground accelerator facility in the world, the Laboratory Underground for Nuclear Astro- physics (LUNA) 0.4 MV accelerator in the Gran Sasso laboratory in Italy. Much of the research described here is based on experiments at LUNA. Background and feasibility studies shown here lay the base for future, higher-energy underground accelerators. Finally, it is shown that such a device can even be placed in a shallow-underground facility such as the Dresden Felsenkeller without great loss of sensitivity.
