Abstract:
The role of women in politics has remained an area of interest, but there is still a dearth of research the documents of such participation. Given the dominance of patriarchal values, it has generally been accepted that there was little scope for women to participate in public/political life. However, history does throw up a few names of queens like Raziya Sultana, Nur Jahan, Chand Bibi, Jijabai, Tarabai, and Ahilyabai Holkar, who must, however, be seen as rather exceptional cases. This does not mean that there were no women in politics other than these. An attempt is made in this paper to throw light on the role of women in the establishment of the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur. The establishment period (1489-1534) was the period of the first three sultans. During these 45 years the mother of the founder Sultan Yusuf Adil Shah, his foster sister Dilshad Agha and Queen Bubuji Khanum played an important role, which helped to establish the Sultanate on a firm foundation.

Kata Kunci: Hukum, Sultanah, Kesultanan, Aceh, DarussalamAbstract: Aceh is a special region. From this area, an Islamic kingdom was born, one of which was the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam. In the course of its history, the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam was once led by a woman (sultanah). Women's position as leader or sultanah is often a controversial issue. Departing from these historical facts, the problem in this study is how the political policies of the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam Sultanate in 1641-1699. This study uses historical methods, namely heuristics, interpretation, source criticism and historiography. The results showed that after the death of Sultan Iskandar Thani, the Sultanate of Aceh was led by sultans namely Sultanah Taj 'Alam Safiyyat al-Din, Sultanah Nur al-'Alam Naqiyyat al-Din, Sultanah' Inayat Shah Zakiyyat al-Din and Sultanah Kamalat al-Din . Sultanate's political policy became an attraction because the Sultanate of Aceh Darussalam was a kingdom with an Islamic pattern. Keywords: Law, Sultanah, Kesultanan, Aceh, Darussalam

Deer, TWW, and JR Whiting. "Evaluation of Sultana grapevine selections for table grape production." Australian Journal of Experimental Agriculture 29, no. 6 (1989): 901. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/ea9890901.

Full text
Abstract:
Eight selections of Sultana grapevine were assessed over 3 seasons for their suitability for table grape production by using specialised cultural techniques to enhance berry size. Moss Sultana consistently produced greater berry weights than did the other selections and on average was about 27% heavier than H5 (6.1 v. 4.8 g) a commercially popular selection. The larger berry weights of Moss Sultana were reflected in greater berry length (mean 28.4 mm) and greater berry diameter (mean 18.9 mm) compared with the other selections. Moss Sultana had the lowest sugar levels and the highest pruning weights in all seasons. There were no significant differences between selections for marketable yield (range 13.4-16.0 kg), bunch number per vine, bunch weight, titratable acid and 0Brix : acid ratio. Moss Sultana has potential to be cultured specifically for table grape production to increase the berry size of Sultana (Thompson Seedless) grapes.

Full text
Abstract:
Nitrogen supply to irrigated Sultana grapevines on own roots or on Ramsey rootstock was varied in a field trial conducted at Irymple, north-western Victoria, over 3 seasons. The nitrogen treatments imposed were 0, 40 and 80 kg N/ha.year supplied in 4 equal applications (2 pre-flowering — late September and mid-October; 1 post-flowering — mid-November; 1 post-harvest — late February) Yields of dried vine fruit were responsive to both nitrogen supply and rootstock. Despite lower bud fertility, Sultana on Ramsey rootstock out-yielded Sultana on own roots due to greater numbers of 1-year-old canes suitable as bearers, more berries per bunch and larger berries. Yield of Sultana on own roots responded in a similar manner to increasing nitrogen supply as yield of Sultana on Ramsey rootstock. Yield increases were due to improved bearing potential (more suitable bearers) and more berries per bunch when nitrogen supply increased from 0 to 40 kg N/ha.year. When nitrogen supply was raised from 40 to 80 kg N/ha.year, a further yield increase was due to enhanced bud fertility and larger berries. These yield components behaved differently for Sultana on own roots compared with Sultana on Ramsey rootstock, but, overall, balanced out such that final yield was not affected by rootstock. Consequently, rootstock was not a significant factor in the dried vine fruit yield response of Sultana to nitrogen supply.

Abstract:
Bryozoans are sessile, filter-feeding, and colony-building invertebrate organisms. Fredericella sultana is a well known primary host of the myxozoan parasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae. There have been no attempts to identify the cellular responses induced in F. sultana during the T. bryosalmonae development. We therefore performed transcriptome analysis with the aim of identifying candidate genes and biological pathways of F. sultana involved in the response to T. bryosalmonae. A total of 1166 differentially up- and downregulated genes were identified in the infected F. sultana. Gene ontology of biological processes of upregulated genes pointed to the involvement of the innate immune response, establishment of protein localization, and ribosome biogenesis, while the downregulated genes were involved in mitotic spindle assembly, viral entry into the host cell, and response to nitric oxide. Eukaryotic Initiation Factor 2 signaling was identified as a top canonical pathway and MYCN as a top upstream regulator in the differentially expressed genes. Our study provides the first transcriptional profiling data on the F. sultana zooid’s response to T. bryosalmonae. Pathways and upstream regulators help us to understand the complex interplay in the infected F. sultana. The results will facilitate the elucidation of innate immune mechanisms of bryozoan and will lay a foundation for further analyses on bryozoan-responsive candidate genes, which will be an important resource for the comparative analysis of gene expression in bryozoans.

Abstract:
Fruit of the variegated grapevine mutant Bruce's Sport is known to dry to a lighter colour than other seedless varieties. The biochemical basis for this decreased browning capacity was investigated. Bruce's Sport grapes had similar levels of phenolic compounds to Sultana H5. Activity of the enzyme polyphenol oxidase (PPO EC 1.10.3.1) in mature berries of Bruce's Sport was only 20-30% of that in Sultana H5. No evidence of inhibitors or activators of PPO was found when berry extracts were mixed. PPO activity on a fresh weight basis was highest in the grape seed traces, intermediate in the skin, and lowest in the pulp in both varieties. In each tissue type, however, PPO activity in Bruce's Sport was less than 25% of that in Sultana H5. On a fresh weight basis, PPO activity in Sultana H5 berries was high at fruit set then declined as the berry developed. PPO activity per berry increased from fruit set until veraison, then remained constant. PPO activity showed similar changes during development of Bruce's Sport berries but was lower than in Sultana H5 at all stages. The Bruce's Sport grapes were variegated and the green regions of skin had similar PPO activity to Sultana H5 skin while the white regions had very low activity. Only the green regions of skin of Bruce's Sport grapes stained for PPO activity with endogenous or exogenously applied phenolic substrates. The decreased browning in this grapevine mutant apparently results from decreased levels of PPO activity in the white regions of the berry, possibly arising from a disruption in chloroplast development.

Abstract:
Bryozoans are aquatic invertebrate moss animals that are found worldwide. Fredericella sultana is a freshwater bryozoan and is the most common primary host of myxozoan parasite, Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae. However, limited genomic resources are available for this bryozoan, which hampers investigations into the molecular mechanisms of host-parasite interactions. To better understand these interactions, there is a need to build a transcriptome dataset of F. sultana, for functional genomics analysis by large-scale RNA sequencing. Total RNA was extracted from zooids of F. sultana cultivated under controlled laboratory conditions. cDNA libraries were prepared and were analyzed by the Illumina paired-ends sequencing. The sequencing data were used for de novo transcriptome assembly and functional annotation. Approximately 118 million clean reads were obtained, and assembled into 85,544 contigs with an average length of 852 bp, an N50 of 1,085 bp, and an average GC content 51.4%. A total of 23,978 (28%) contigs were annotated using BLASTX analysis. Of these transcripts, 4,400 contigs had highest similarity to brachiopod species Lingula anatina. Based on Gene ontology (GO) annotation, the most highly scored categories of biological process were categorized into cellular process (27%), metabolic process (24%), and biological regulation (8%) in the transcriptome of F. sultana. This study gives first insights into the transcriptome of F. sultana and provides comprehensive genetic resources for the species. We believe that the transcriptome of F. sultana will serve as a useful genomic dataset to accelerate research of functional genomics and will help facilitate whole genome sequencing and annotation. Candidate genes potentially involved in growth, proteolysis, and stress/immunity-response were identified, and are worthy of further investigation.

Abstract:
SUMMARYColonial hosts offer unique opportunities for exploitation by endoparasites resulting from extensive clonal propagation, but these interactions are poorly understood. The freshwater bryozoan, Fredericella sultana, and the myxozoan, Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae, present an appropriate model system for examining such interactions. F. sultana propagates mainly asexually, through colony fragmentation and dormant propagules (statoblasts). Our study examines how T. bryosalmonae exploits the multiple transmission routes offered by the propagation of F. sultana, evaluates the effects of such transmission on its bryozoan host, and tests the hypothesis that poor host condition provokes T. bryosalmonae to bail out of a resource that may soon be unsustainable, demonstrating terminal investment. We show that infections are present in substantial proportions of colony fragments and statoblasts over space and time and that moderate infection levels promote statoblast hatching and hence effective fecundity. We also found evidence for terminal investment, with host starvation inducing the development of transmission stages. Our results contribute to a growing picture that interactions of T. bryosalmonae and F. sultana are generally characterized by parasite persistence, facilitated by multiple transmission pathways and host condition-dependent developmental cycling, and host tolerance, promoted by effective fecundity effects and an inherent capacity for renewed growth and clonal replication.

Abstract:
Abstract We thoroughly investigate conformally Schwarzschild spacetimes in different coordinate systems to seek for physically reasonable models of a cosmological black hole. We assume that a conformal factor depends only on the time coordinate and that the spacetime is asymptotically flat Friedmann–Lemaître–Robertson–Walker Universe filled by a perfect fluid obeying a linear equation state p = wρ with w > −1/3. In this class of spacetimes, the McClure–Dyer spacetime, constructed in terms of the isotropic coordinates, and the Thakurta spacetime, constructed in terms of the standard Schwarzschild coordinates, are identical and do not describe a cosmological black hole. In contrast, the Sultana–Dyer and Culetu classes of spacetimes, constructed in terms of the Kerr–Schild and Painlevé–Gullstrand coordinates, respectively, describe a cosmological black hole. In the Sultana–Dyer case, the corresponding matter field in general relativity can be interpreted as a combination of a homogeneous perfect fluid and an inhomogeneous null fluid, which is valid everywhere in the spacetime unlike Sultana and Dyer’s interpretation. In the Culetu case, the matter field can be interpreted as a combination of a homogeneous perfect fluid and an inhomogeneous anisotropic fluid. However, in both cases, the total energy–momentum tensor violates all the standard energy conditions at a finite value of the radial coordinate in late times. As a consequence, the Sultana–Dyer and Culetu black holes for −1/3 < w ⩽ 1 cannot describe the evolution of a primordial black hole after its horizon entry.

AbstractThis article examines the relationship between the leader of the Aqquyunlu Turkman confederation, ‘Uthmān Beg Qarā Yulūk, and the Mamluk Sultanate, with an eye to the ways in which the Mamluks sought to define the limits of sultanic sovereignty on the frontier, as well as the ways in which Qarā Yulūk sought to pursue his own interests and those of his tribal followers within the framework of the Mamluk political order. What becomes apparent is that while the interests of the Turkmans ultimately clashed with those of the Mamluk sultans on the Anatolian frontier, both Qarā Yulūk and the Mamluks shared a common interest in maintaining a relationship in which formal recognition of Aqquyunlu autonomy was exchanged for ritual submission to the sultan.

Abstract:
The influences of the composition, environmental humidity, and temperature on the stability of dried fruit bars during storage were investigated. Sultana bars were chosen to represent similar types of fruit bars. The moisture sorption isotherms and textural stability of sultana bars with and without glucose and maltodextrin additives were determined at 20°C and 40°C using the standard static gravimetric method. The shape of all of the isotherms was found to be typical of high sugar foods and could be explained by four different models. Additives and storage temperatures affected the monolayer moisture content, equilibrium moisture content, and the textural stability of the sultana bars during storage at the same water activity. The relationship between the loss of stiffness and water activity had a sigmoid shape and was explained by Fermi’s equation. This paper fills an important gap with that which does not exist in a large number of sorption behaviour publications available in the literature. It presents real data explaining the true mechanism of textural change during storage with both water activity and glass transition theories for high sugar fruit pastes. The information obtained from this study may help the food producers, who make high sugar containing dried fruit products, to create better textural and sensory properties, and may also help to predict the storage stability and packaging requirements.

Abstract:
The image of the historical Turkish Prince Mustapha (1520-1566) is symbolic in Elizabethan Age as a reflection of paternal filicide. The tragedy of Prince Mustapha is portrayed in many plays. It is a unique portrait of subjugation in the Elizabethan eyes of the European fear of Turkey. Although some historians envisage Mustapha with admiration for his tragic fate by the Turkish tyrant, Greville stands by the side of the Turkish prince. Greville’s Soliman is an arrogant sultan with bloody hands who cares only for his crown. Roxolana is the evil sultana who plotted the demise of Mustapha to save the crown for her own son. By an irony of fate, Roxolana ends up a victim to her own plot. Though Greville expresses his allure in the Turkish court's affairs, he portrays his apprehension in the Turkish Sultan. Keywords: Mustapha, Soliman, Roxolana, Zanger, Ambition, Treachery, murder, filicide

Abstract:
Abstract This essay explores the forms of political legitimacy claimed by Muslim sultans and received by their Muslim and non-Muslim subjects in sultanate and early Mughal Kashmir. The establishment of the Shahmirid sultanate in 1339 marked the beginning of a new multilingual situation where Sanskrit and Persian were both used as official languages. In such a situation, presentation of the Shahmirids’ political legitimacy took different forms depending on the language in which it was made. Shahmirid sultans declared their Indic legitimacy in Sanskrit and Islamic legitimacy in Persian. A polyglot chose the Indic legitimacy to praise the contemporary sultan in his Sanskrit writing with full knowledge of the Islamic legitimacy claimed by the same sultan. In such a situation, a ruler’s action that was deeply linked with his claim of legitimacy, e.g., Akbar’s sun-veneration could be interpreted differently by the observers depending on the language used to express their interpretations.

Abstract:
The seasonal development of vine canopy size and vine morphology of minimal- and cane-pruned Sultana was examined by destructive harvests during the 1982-83 growth period. Leaf canopies of minimal-pruned vines developed more quickly, grew larger, and filled sooner than those of cane-pruned vines. Minimal-pruned vines had 4 times the number of shoots and 3 times the number of nodes on current seasons's shoots at 34 days after budburst. This largely explains the more rapid canopy development and fill of minimal-pruned vines. Minimal pruning had a stunting effect on growth, resulting in shorter shoots, shorter internodes, and smaller leaves compared with cane pruning. Indirect optical measurements of the seasonal leaf canopy development of Sultana vines in the same experimental vineyard during the 1991-92 growth period confirmed the results obtained in 1982-83.

Abstract:
Drought caused by climate change increased the relevance of irrigation management in viticulture. In order to regulate irrigation strategies for Vitis vinifera L., their influences on vine performance, yield and quality attributes need to be understood. This study evaluates the effects of different irrigation schedulings on vine performance and grape composition in a vineyard of cv. ‘Sultani Çekirdeksiz’ (Sultana clone, H5) during three consecutive years (2015–2017). Three irrigation treatments were assayed: (i) full irrigation (FI), soil water content was completed to field capacity within one week intervals; (ii) DI65, applying 65% water of FI and (iii) DI35, applying 35% water of FI. Water stress caused by the deficit irrigation treatments limited vine performance in terms of vegetative development and yield. The highest phenolic content, antioxidant capacity and total flavonoid accumulation were obtained under DI35, although this treatment had lowest yield. In conclusion, DI65 (moderate stress) might result in a more balanced yield and grape quality attributes in comparison with FI and DI35.

Abstract:
Summary Soybean, Glycine max, is a relatively new crop in Europe gaining increasing interest for its potential to fix atmospheric nitrogen and thus increase sustainability of modern agricultural production systems. Under temperate conditions, root-lesion nematodes (Pratylenchus spp.) are one of the most prominent plant-parasitic nematode taxa of economic concern in soybean. Here, we investigated the susceptibility of soybean cultivars towards naturally occurring populations of Pratylenchus spp. and their effects on soybean yield. At the site Bundesallee the cultivars ‘Abelina’, ‘Primus’ and ‘Taifun3’ supported the highest infestation and multiplication of a mixed population of P. neglectus and P. crenatus, while ‘Sultana’ and ‘Solena’ were least susceptible. At the field site Groß Lüsewitz, ‘Primus’ and ‘Merlin’ cultivars were significantly more susceptible to P. neglectus than ‘Sultana’. Soybean yield was reduced by high initial densities of Pratylenchus spp. Results are expected to contribute to a better nematode management.

Abstract:
The article concentrates on the reign of Sultan Mehmed Reşad (1909–18) to discuss the last phase of the Ottoman sultanate. Notwithstanding the significance of the Second Constitutional Period, Mehmed Reşad’s reign itself is often mentioned merely as representing the twilight of the Ottoman sultanate, when it became devoid of political power. By using a variety of primary sources, archival, printed and visual documents, this paper focuses on the rule of Mehmed Reşad as representing an attempt to shape a new stage of the Ottoman sultanate. It analyzes the use of Ottoman history at that time and the diffusion of imperial representations to evoke the grandeur of past sultans and its links to the reign of Mehmed Reşad. By promoting his image as a benevolent ruler and the supreme icon of the imagined Ottoman past, Mehmed Reşad endeavored to safeguard his status as a sultan and the future of the sultanate.

Abstract:
The writing of the Qur’an has started since it was revealed to the Prophet S.A.W in the seventh century AD. The effort to copy this sacred words was also done by the caliph al-Rashidin, especially Sayidina Uthman al’Affan until through various improvement processes to ensure that Muslims can use this scripture more easily and in accordance with the latest approach. There are a number of great Islamic empire has made an effort to copy the manuscripts of the Qur’an and this is also true in the Malay world. The Sultanate of Terengganu is recorded among the 11 Islamic sultans that have carried out this copying effort since the 18th century AD. The objective of this study is to identify the era of the Terengganu sultanate who carried out this noble endeavor as the Terengganu sultanate was founded in 1708 AD and ruled by 17 sultans until now. To ensure that the objectives of this study are achieved, qualitative research methods are used by looking at the evidence available in all Terengganu Qur’an manuscript and examining the colophon notes found in the manuscript. To support this study, historical records on the development of Islam and culture are also used as reference. The results of the study found that the Terengganu Quran manuscript has been actively produced during the era of the Baginda Sultan Omar. This is evidenced when four of the five manuscripts of the Qur’an have recorded the date of writing which occurred with the date of his reign. In addition, Baginda Sultan Omar is one of the longest-ruling sultans of Terengganu and and his contribution in knowledge and culture has been recorded in past historical records. The heritage of the Quran manuscript is proof that Baginda Sultan Omar was a ruler who always upheld Islam as the official religion of the state.
