Abstract:
This study offers an analysis of the representation of chronic and episodic pain in narrative life-writing. I have surveyed six contemporary memoirs that are each concerned with the author's chronic pain experience. In the field of pain studies – both in the humanities and medical sciences – the adequacy of language to represent pain is a vexed issue. Many assert that pain is difficult to represent in language because, in part, we fail to experience it as a meaningful event. Narrative is the most common mode of communication with which we express events that happened in the past; it thus offers writers ways to represent their pain in the same respect, with the same effects, as other less problematic past happenings. In pain studies there is rarely a distinction made between the varying representability of acute pain (temporary) and chronic or episodic pain (long term), when in fact each form affects a life in radically different ways. Chronic or episodic pain implies a temporal element and will become a fixture in an individual's long-term experiences. As a mode that encodes change over time in space, narrative is ideal for the representation of both chronic and episodic pain. In this study I have isolated three types of autobiographical pain narratives that exhibit different ways chronic pain is represented. Chapter one describes the "triangulation of pain," in which narrators talk about their own pain obliquely by referring to the pain of others. Chapter two looks at the "translation of pain," in which narrators try to describe their pain as directly as possible. Chapter three observes the journey or quest pattern found in pain narratives that tend to focus on the pursuit of cures. Although pain can be difficult to articulate, there are a diversity of narrative methods that give it self-determined meaning that works to supersede the limitations we face when trying to come to terms with such an inexorable and interior phenomenon.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA (English Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: As existent beings, we identify with the world through our thoughts and perceptions. Man is driven to seek meaning by the very complexities and contradictions of existence. As self-conscious beings, we cannot live without a sense of awareness and understanding. Creativity allows an individual to develop a unique understanding of the nature and destiny of man. This study draws attention to writers who were able to transcend their external environment and immerse themselves in a setting where man’s individuality is fundamental to living an authentic life. Camus, Dostoevsky and Kafka made every effort to live consciously and authentically. They believed that inwardness was not to be defined by an external, social setting, but rather through an intimacy of consciousness. This awareness and unveiling of being enables us to create meaning. These authors removed their social mantles and were willing to sacrifice acceptance in the pursuit of this cause. They believed that every man has a responsibility to live an individual and authentic life. This psychological and even physical isolation is not easy, however, and often causes much suffering. Using existentialism as a framework, this thesis will focus on solitariness, suffering and creativity, all of which point to the importance of individual consciousness rather than living a life of societal pressures and conformity.

Rapson, Jessica. "Topographies of suffering : encountering the Holocaust in landscape, literature and memory." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2012. http://research.gold.ac.uk/8025/.

Full text
Abstract:
As the Holocaust passes out of living memory, this thesis re-evaluates the potential of commemorative landscapes to engender meaningful and textualised encounters with a past which, all too often, seems distant and untouchable. As the concentration camps and mass graves that shape our experiential access to this past are integrated into tourist itineraries, associated discourse is increasingly delimited by a pervasive sense of memorial fatigue which is itself compounded by the notion that the experiences of the Holocaust are beyond representation; that they deny, evade or transcend communication and comprehension. Harnessing recent developments across memory studies, cultural geography and ecocritical literary theory, this thesis contends that memory is always in production and never produced; always a journey and never a destination. In refusing the notion of an ineffable past, I turn to the texts and topographies that structure contemporary encounters with the Holocaust and consider their potential to create an ethically grounded and reflexive past-present engagement. Topographies of Suffering explores three case studies: the Buchenwald Concentration Camp Memorial, Weimar, Germany; the mass grave at Babi Yar, Kiev, Ukraine; and the razed village of Lidice, Czech Republic. These landscapes are revealed as evolving palimpsests; multi-layered, multi-dimensional and texturised spaces always subject to ongoing processes of mediation and remediation. I examine memory’s locatedness in landscape alongside the ways it may travel according to diverse literary and spatial de-territorializations. The thesis overall brings three disparate sites together as places in which the past can be encounterable, immersive and affective. In doing so, it looks to a future in which the others of the past can be faced, and in which the alibi of ineffability can be consigned to history

Abstract:
This thesis aims to provide an examination of texts produced by and about the New Woman of the late-nineteenth century, with specific reference to the trope of self-harm. It aims to explore the connections between the fictional bodies of text in which the New Woman was represented, and the damaged bodies of women who committed self-destructive acts. It examines both the religious frameworks within which Victorian women’s fiction operated, and three specific forms of self-harm which feature across a range of textual artefacts. To this end, the thesis discusses New Woman novels, poems, and short stories as well as newspaper and magazine articles, archival materials, and popular works of art, all of which discuss or display the damaged female body. The scope of this project is limited to New Woman writing produced between 1880 and 1900, although it does consider the ways in which the New Woman built on, or challenged, discourses about self-harm which appear in materials produced during the earlier half of the nineteenth century. This research demonstrates that New Woman writers drew on forms of self-harm such as anorexia, alcoholism, and self-mutilation, to express their frustrations at the contradictory requirements of women endorsed by conventional religion, at a time during which attitudes towards the body were changing. It shows how the female form embodied various Victorian political and social debates, and how it was deployed as a strategic symbol, in writing which sought to disrupt women’s subordinate position within the patriarchal system. Consequently, this research contributes to the fields of psychiatric history, New Woman studies, and more generally the study of Victorian women’s writing, by examining both canonical and critically neglected texts by women alongside non-fictional materials from the period. It explores both fictional acts of self-harm, and textual strategies, which have yet to be examined in New Woman writing, and which are key to understanding her complicated place in the male-oriented publishing environment of the Fin de Siècle.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between the city and the individual in literature, thereby acknowledging the anthropomorphic qualities we endow with our cities and in turn, how these qualities consolidate into the trope of the city character. We build this understanding by discussing the social, moral, political, literary, etc. associations of the city, and how these lend themselves to expressions of human energy or reflections of human character. These understandings are then given form through close readings of Gustave Flaubert’s Sentimental Education and Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment.

Abstract:
Background: Continuity of care and post-discharge follow-up visits can improve the quality of care and reduce the likelihood of relapse and re-hospitalization in patients with psychotic disorders. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze post-discharge follow-up interventions in patients with psychotic disorders, and to identify measurement instruments for intervention outcomes. Method: The literature review described here used a specific framework, where the follow-up interventions and the measurement instruments were analyzed systematically, to investigate fifteen studies identified through electronic databases such as Pubmed, Psychinfo, ProQuest, Cinahl, Medline, and Scopus. Results: The studies used interventions including psychoeducation, cognitive-behavioral therapy, cognitive behaviorally oriented service, optimal clinical management, relapse prevention plan, software suggested intervention, ambulatory outpatient care, community re-entry module, integrated treatment, and hospital-based community psychiatric service. Additionally these studies used thirty-eight measurement instruments to assess change in psychiatric patients or their relatives, based on psychological, social, and occupational factors as well as specific symptoms and symptom severity. The instruments also measured quality of life, insight, self-esteem, and cognitive function. Further, the studies examined therapeutic alliances and the experience of family members. The most commonly used instruments were the Global Assessment of Functioning and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. Conclusion: The interventions reviewed here emphasize an individualized approach that targets education, illness management, coping strategies, social skills training and relapse prevention, and seeks to alter any harmful understanding of the illness. Although researchers can choose among numerous interventions, psychoeducation was the most appealing follow-up intervention for patients suffering from psychotic disorders. Importantly, evaluation instruments must be relevant to psychological symptoms, treatment, time and resources available, and what questions were being sought to answer. Approximately eleven of the thirty-eight instruments reviewed here showed weak or unclear reliability and validity. The most practical instrument for evaluating the outcome of an intervention for patients suffering from psychotic disorders wasthe Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the language of pain/suffering in Ancrene Wisse, the Wooing Group, and the Katherine Group, arguing that the anchoress nourishes an acute but discriminating sensitivity to pain. It seeks to demonstrate that the anchoress uses these early Middle English texts to cultivate sophisticated affective stirrings. Chapter 1 foregrounds the multidimensional penitence in Ancrene Wisse, situated in the context of Latin and vernacular penitential and homiletic material. The anchoress’ penitential processes demand not only physical pain, but also affective pain and intensive cognitive processes of self-examination. Chapter 2 argues that the Wooing Group meditations are tools of pain-cultivation, which the anchoress uses to nurture her affective pain as she develops her intimacy with the Spousal Lamb and his Mother. Chapter 3 assesses imagery of physical and affective woundedness. This chapter examines the anchoress’ use of imagery of Christ’s wounds, sin-wounds, and penitential wounding in Ancrene Wisse and the Wooing Group, and then studies her use of the saints’ wounding in the Katherine Group. Chapter 4 contends that spectatorship and performance of suffering are not separable acts for the anchoress. The chapter assesses: the anchoress’ spectatorship in the Katherine Group hagiographies, a spectatorship based on defamiliarization; the anchoress’ participation with the pain of Christ in Ancrene Wisse and the Wooing Group, including an examination of her potential use of church wall paintings; and the female reader of Hali Meiðhad, who immerses herself in the suffering of a married and child-bearing woman. Chapter 5 examines the crucial affective phenomenon of compassion, arguing that compassion in Ancrene Wisse and the Wooing Group is not a distanced ‘pity’, but a complex ‘co-feeling’ (using Milan Kundera’s (1984) term). The thesis concludes by underscoring the fact that the anchoress’ painful existence is not pathological; it is an existence characterized by agency and emancipation.

Njovane, Thandokazi. ""The wings of whipped butterflies" : trauma, silence and representation of the suffering child in selected contemporary African short fiction." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1004214.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation, which examines the literary representation of childhood trauma, is held together by three threads of inquiry. Firstly, I examine the stylistic devices through which three contemporary African writers – NoViolet Bulawayo, Uwem Akpan, and Mia Couto – engage with the subject of childhood trauma in five of their short stories: “Hitting Budapest”; “My Parents’ Bedroom” and “Fattening for Gabon”; and “The Day Mabata-bata Exploded” and “The Bird-Dreaming Baobab,” respectively. In each of these narratives, the use of ingén(u)s in the form of child narrators and/or focalisers instantiates a degree of structural irony, premised on the cognitive discrepancy between the protagonists’ perceptions and those of the implied reader. This structural irony then serves to underscore the reality that, though in a general sense the precise nature of traumatic experience cannot be directly communicated in language, this is exacerbated in the case of children, because children’s physical and psychological frameworks are underdeveloped. Consequently, children’s exposure to trauma and atrocity results in disruptions of both personal and communal notions of safety and security which are even more severe than those experienced by adults. Secondly, I analyse the political, cultural and economic factors which give rise to the traumatic incidents depicted in the stories, and the child characters’ interpretations and responses to these exigencies. Notions of subjectivity and intersubjectivity, identity and community, victimhood and survival, agency and disempowerment are discussed here in relation to the context of postcolonial Africa and the contemporary realities of chronic poverty, genocide, child-trafficking, the aftermath of civil war, and the legacies of colonialism and racism. Thirdly, this dissertation inspects the areas of congruence and divergence between trauma theory, literary scholarship on trauma narratives, and literary attempts to represent atrocity and trauma despite what is widely held to be the inadequacy of language – and therefore representation – to this task. There are certain differences between the three authors’ depictions of children’s experiences of trauma, despite the fact that the texts all grapple with the aporetic nature of trauma and the paradox of representing the unrepresentable. To this end, they utilise various strategies – temporal disjunctions and fragmentations, silences and lacunae, elements of the fantastical and surreal, magical realism, and instances of abjection and dissociation – to gesture towards the inexpressible, or that which is incommensurable with language. I argue that, ultimately, it is the endings of these stories which suggest the unrepresentable nature of trauma. Traumatic experience poses a challenge to representational conventions and, in its resistance, encourages a realisation that new ways of writing and speaking about trauma in the African continent, particularly with regards to children, are needed.

Full text
Abstract:
In an introduction and five chapters, each devoted to one novel, the thesis examines the different aspects of suffering and sin with which Golding is particularly concerned. The Introduction briefly examines all of Golding's novels and two of his short stories (The Scorpion God and Clonk Clonk), giving an overview of Golding's concerns and suggesting the possibility that Golding, in his last two novels and in Rites of Passage, tried to account for some of the reasons for suffering and sin in the contemporary world. The suffering caused by the sin of egoism and greed is examined in the chapter on Pincher Martin, which also discusses the effect of sin on dying and the fear of death. The chapter on Free Fall shows suffering and sin under the aspect of the individual's inability to relate in any meaningful way to another individual. Golding's preoccupation with freedom and determinism is also briefly examined in this chapter. Much of The Pyramid is concerned with exploitation and the lack of understanding of love, and the suffering which arises as a consequence is discussed in the third chapter - a theme which is also important in Darkness Visible. The sin of egoism and its consequences, and the suffering arising out of the long process of development during a divine call to self-sacrifice are further themes examined in the chapter on Darkness Visible. The right of the individual to determine his own life is examined in the last chapter The Paper Men, where suffering is shown to arise from an individual's refusal to accept his responsibility for others and in his attempt to evade a possibly divine call to duty by 'running away'. A bibliography of works by Golding and on Golding concludes the thesis.

This collection of short stories explores the different ways in which women experience suffering. The narrative focuses on the daily lives of women who have undergone some type of heartbreak. While the stories occasionally include the incident which leads to despair, the collection is more concerned with the way women function after a personal tragedy. The stories show the grace of people who continue to move forward when their lives are filled with suffering. Sexuality enters the stories and exposes both the triumph and destructive nature of sexuality. Jensen, Anna M. "Modernity and the Good Death : Heidegger and Jose Clemente Orozco's Epic of American Civilization /." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2009. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/1905.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis will analyze José Clemente Orozco's mural The Epic of American Civilization in terms of the problem of suffering. It will focus specifically on two panels, “Human Sacrifice in Ancient Times” and “Human Sacrifice in Modern Times.” This analysis will comprehend not only the works of art within their historical context, but also within Martin Heidegger's philosophical discussion of the question of suffering. Heidegger presents a unique perspective on the question of human suffering when he writes that Western humans have forgotten how to “dwell.” This dwelling is defined by Heidegger's novel conception of ontology as relational rather than individualistic. According to this theory, humans must identify themselves through their associations, both with other people and with things. Without these associations, humans are not be able to escape the anxiety associated with suffering and death brought about by the isolating effects of Western modernity. A discussion of Mexico provides a practical example of the complexities of the question of dwelling in Western thought. At the time Orozco was painting his mural, Mexican identity was rapidly fragmenting. In the decades after the Mexican Revolution, many artists wrestled with the concept of Mexican identity, and it was in this time of flux that Orozco offered his interpretation of the cyclical progress of humanity. The two paintings depict two forms of suffering, which this paper will refer to as a “good” and a “bad” death. This nomenclature is not strictly accurate as neither form could be said to be desirable in any concrete way. Consequently a Rivera painting (“Revolution – Germination”) will also be presented that suggests an ideal death. However, the focus will remain on Orozco's paintings. Of course, in his own paintings Orozco is not endorsing the act of human sacrifice. However, because of differences in their composition, they suggest not only a cyclic pattern to human history, but also a downward progression where the persistent problems of violence and suffering in human societies have grown more difficult and complicated since the advent of modernity. As Orozco's paintings seem to suggest and Heidegger will argue, the solution to the isolating ‘bad death’ is learning to live relationally. These relationships comprehend the social and the cultural, but the focus will be on the ecological and the divine, because, as several critics will argue, these are the greatest deficiencies in modernity.

Scapin, Nuria. "'The flower of suffering' : a study of Aeschylus' Oresteia in the light of Presocratic ideas." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/9314.

Full text
Abstract:
My PhD thesis, The Flower of Suffering, offers a philosophical evaluation of Aeschylus' Oresteia in light of Presocratic ideas. By examining several aspects of the tragic trilogy in relation to some of Aeschylus' near-contemporary thinkers, it aims to unravel the overarching theological ideas and the metaphysical and epistemological assumptions underpinning the Oresteia's dramatic narrative. My aim is to bring to relief those aspects of the Oresteia which I believe will benefit from a comparison with some ideas, or modes of thought, which circulated among the Presocratic philosophers. I will explore how reading some of this tragedy's themes in relation to Presocratic debates about theology and cosmic justice may affect and enhance our understanding of the theological ‘tension' and metaphysical assumptions in Aeschylus' work. In particular, it is my contention that Aeschylus' explicit theology, which has been often misinterpreted as a form of theodicy where the justice of heaven is praised and a faith in the rule of the gods is encouraged, is presented in these terms only to create a stronger collision with the painful reality dramatized from a human perspective. By setting these premises, it is my intention to confer on Greek tragedy a prominent position in the history of early Greek philosophical thought. If the exclusion of Presocratic material from debates about tragedy runs the risk of obscuring a thorough understanding of the broader cultural backdrop against which tragedy was born, the opposite is also true. Greek tragedy represents, in its own dramatic language, a fundamental contribution to early philosophical speculation about the divine, human attitudes towards it, indeed, the human place in relation to the cosmic forces which govern the universe.

Allen, Francine LaRue. "Reclaiming the Human Self: Redemptive Suffering and Spiritual Service in the Works of James Baldwin." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2006. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/english_diss/6.

Full text
Abstract:
James Arthur Baldwin argues that the issue of humanity—what it means to be human and whether or not all people bear the same measure of human worth—supersedes all issues, including socially popular ones such as race and religion. As a former child preacher, Baldwin claims, like others shaped by both the African-American faith tradition and Judeo-Christianity, that human equality stands as a divinely mandated and philosophically sound concept. As a literary artist and social commentator, Baldwin argues that truth in any narrative text, whether fictional or non-fictional, lies in its embrace or rejection of human equality. Truth-telling narrative texts uphold human equality; false-witnessing texts do not. Baldwin shows in four of his novels the prevalence of the latter narrative type. Within the fictional societies of Go Tell It on the Mountain (1953), Giovanni’s Room (1956), If Beale Street Could Talk (1974), and Just Above My Head (1979), Baldwin reveals how society’s powerful bear false witness against the marginalized through stereotyping social narratives. However, Baldwin uses his novels to show the humanity of the marginalized. In so doing, he connects his works, as well as the works of contemporary black literary artists, to the concept of Christian spirituality.

Abstract:
Background: When patients suffer from sicknesses such as rectal cancer, Chrons disease and ulcerative colitis, then ostomies can be a course of treatment. Earlier research show that nurses lack knowledge to be able to care for patients with ostomies while expected to have an important role in the patients’ well-being.  Problem: Lack of knowledge from the general nurse about ostomy care impacts patients since their lives are affected by living with a stoma.  Aim: To describe patient´s experiences of living with a stoma. Method: A literature review based on ten qualitative scientific articles with descriptive synthesis. Results: Experiences shown in the results were divided into three themes: “Emotionell influence”, “Changes in everyday life” and “Acceptance of living with a stoma”.  Out of these themes came six subthemes: “To feel worry”, “To feel frustration”, “To feel shame”, “To live with a changed body”, “To be limited physically in one´s life”, “To lose control”.  Conclusion: Life with a stoma brings daily changes and influences the patients emotional state in relation to their body and their new situation. These experiences can in their turn evolve and patients can come to accept the stoma over time. Patients experiences a lack of information concerning ostomy care and support in living with a stoma. The results show that patients due to their ostomy experience suffering related to illness, to care, and to life.

Abstract:
This thesis offers an analysis of the intertextual practices in Marie-Claire Blais's trilogy Soifs by which we explore the way the author integrates into her novels significant literary figures and texts in order to underline one of the trilogy's constant themes: the innocence and suffering of the victims of the twentieth century and of today. In this fiction saturated with literary and artistic references, literature appears as a standpoint on modern world and works are considered to be acts of creation that opposes to the "choeur de la destruction" the voices of writers and artists.

McInnis, Jeff. "Shadows and chivalry : pain, suffering, evil and goodness in the works of George MacDonald and C.S. Lewis." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/2881.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that George MacDonald's literary influence upon C. S. Lewis-concerning the themes of pain, suffering, evil and goodness-was transforming and long-lasting. It is argued in the opening chapter that MacDonald's work had a great deal to do with the change in young Lewis's imagination, helping to convert him from a romantic doubter to a romantic believer in God and his goodness. A review of both writers' first works suggests that such influence may have begun earlier in Lewis's career than has been noticed. The second chapter examines how both authors contended with the problems that pain and suffering present, and how both understood and presented the nature of faith. Differences in their treatment of these subjects are noted, but it is argued that these views and depictions share fundamental elements, and that MacDonald's direct influence can be demonstrated in particular cases. The view that MacDonald was primarily a champion of feelings is challenged, as is the idea that either man's later writing displays a loss of faith in God and his goodness. The third chapter, in specifically refuting the assertion that MacDonald's view of evil was inclusive in the Jungian or dualistic sense, shows how both authors' work maintains an unmistakable distinction between evil fortune and moral evil. The next two chapters examine fundamental similarities in their treatment of evil and goodness. Special care is taken in these two chapters to trace MacDonald's direct influence, especially regarding the differences they believed existed between hell's Pride and what they believed God to be. The fifth chapter reviews their ideas and depictions of heaven in summing up the study's argument concerning the overall influence of MacDonald's writing upon Lewis's imagination-in particular the change in Lewis's understanding of the relations between Spirits, Nature, and God.

King, Daniel A. "Painful stories : the experience of pain and its narration in the Greek literature of the Imperial period (100-250)." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2011. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:c5509a42-cd3f-4e11-b9a1-8a3b6fa84101.

Abstract:
This research project investigates the relationship between pain and the practices of explaining and narrating it to others. Current scholarship argues that the representation of suffering became, during the Imperial period, an increasingly effective and popular strategy for cultivating authority and that this explains the success of Christian culture’s representation of itself as a community of sufferers. One criticism of this approach is that the experience of pain has often been assumed, rather than analysed. Here, I investigate the nature of pain by attending to its intimate relationship with language; pain was connected to the strategies used to communicate that experience to others. I will show that writers throughout the Imperial period were concerned with questions about how to communicate pain and how that act of communication shaped, managed, and alleviated the experience. I investigate this culture along three axes. Part 1, ‘The Sublime Representation of Pain’, investigates the way different authors thought about the capacity of sublime language and rhetorical techniques such as enargeia to effectively communicate pain. I argue that for writers such as Longinus, the sublime offers an opportunity to replicate the traumatic experience of the pain sufferer in the audience or listener—pain is narrated to the audience through a traumatic communicative mode. Contrarily, I show how authors such as Plutarch and Galen were particularly concerned to desublimate the representation of pain, reducing the affective power of images of pain by promoting the audience’s conscious engagement with the text or representational medium. Part 2, ‘Medical Narratives’, examines a conflict between Galen and Aristides over the way language and narrative signified or referred to painful experiences. I show how both writers negotiate the way pain destroys and transcends ordered, structured, narrative by engaging in a process of narrative translation. I will illuminate the difference between scientific, diagnostic narratives which explain and rationalise pain experiences (in the case of Galen) and those which attempt to give witness to the nebulous, ineffable qualities of pain. In Part 3, ‘Narrating Cures’ I investigate ancient practices of psychotherapy. I show how various philosophical consolations were underpinned by an understanding of the power of pain to continually return and overwhelm the individual. I show further that the Greek romances engage in a type of talking cure: the novels use narration and story-telling to help assert the protagonists’ distance from their past traumatic experiences and, thus, allow the individual to overcome their painful past.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine ways of writing experiences of the strange and different, experiences of the other in his or her otherness and experiences of suffering. The study focuses possibilities and limits for the writing of these experiences and aims at finding a tangible way of writing literature. Part of the aim of this study is to elaborate a proposal for a way of writing experiences of the strange and different, experiences of the other in his or her otherness and experiences of suffering.     The material for the study consists of three different approaches to literature, in which theories on literature or analyses of literary works are presented. This material is initially analysed in separate analyses in which conceptions, strategies and methods for writing experiences of the strange and different, the other and suffering are identified. Secondly, the material is analysed in a comparative analysis, aimed at finding similarities and differences between the approaches but above all to let the approaches supplement and challenge each other. The second part of the study consists of the elaboration of a proposal for a way of writing based on the result of the first analyses.    The result of the study is a way of writing in which the limitations and inabilities of literature are used as critical and creative resources. These limitations and inabilities consists of the violence of the literary naming and designation, and the boundaries between identities that render a complete insight in the experiences of someone else impossible. With these limitations and inabilities as a starting point, conceptions, strategies and methods for writing literature are distinguished and developed. A movement between nearness and distance both in content and form is identified as a fruitful way of writing that can mediate experiences and avoid to arrange what is strange and unfamiliar in these experiences into the familiar, as well as and openness for a manifoldness of possibilities. As distinct way of writing is distinguished in the metaphor, a literary device in which the movement between nearness and distance is made concrete. In the elaboration of a proposal for a way of writing these conceptions, strategies and methods provided the framework for a way of writing which doesn’t reduce experiences or close the literary text for a multitude of possibilities.

Abstract:
Gerard Manley Hopkins suffered deeply. His “Terrible Sonnets” are confessional poetry that demonstrate his struggle with his God and with himself. This work analyses the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, starting Noah and ending with Jesus’s promise of a Paraclete, to analyze how both God and Man approach earthly and heavenly comfort. The work will then turn to Hopkins’s poetry to show that Hopkins’s unshakable faith and deep understanding of the Bible is both the cause and the cure of his suffering. This essay concludes that it is only through suffering that Hopkins, like Job, Jesus, and King Lear, is able to achieve both comfort and wisdom.

Abstract:
Background: It is important that clinical nurse specialists working in the perioperative care have the knowledge and skills of key factors that cause pressure sores so that preventive measures can be implemented. It is well documented that there are significant cost savings to society in the prevention of pressure ulcers. Pressure ulcers in the literature reviews discussed primarily in the context of long-term care, intensive care and rehabilitation. There is less focus on literature reviews on the acute care and the operating environment related to pressure ulcers. Objective: The purpose of the systematic study was to identify factors that are important to pay attention to reduce the risk of developing pressure ulcers perioperatively. Method: A systematic literature review with quantitative method. Results:In the result analysis showed this result in three different themes: a, intra and post-operative factors that are important to consider for the perioperative team in pressure ulcer prevention. Recurring factors in the outcome affecting pressure ulcers development were operative time, diabetes, points Braden Scale, BMI, mobility, measuring instruments, blood pressure, drugs, anesthesia shape, temperature, postoperative period, friction and shear, vulnerable areas where pressure ulcers develop as well as moisture and incontinence. Conclusion: Our systematic literature review reveals factors affecting pressure ulcer development in the operating environment. The result of this systematic literature could possibly prove that there are many perioperative factors affecting pressure ulcer development, and the perioperative environment is a high-risk environment for developing pressure ulcers. Important factors that the perioperative team needs to pay attention to reduce the risk of pressure ulcers occurring perioperatively evident in the results.

Abstract:
Backgrund: Dialysis is the most common form of treatment for patients suffering from end stage renal disease, an increasingly common ailment throughout the world. As such, there is a growing need for health care personell and society at large to learn about this group of patients to provide the best care possible. Aim: The aim of this study is to describe the experiences of patients undergoing dialysis. Method: The design of this study is a literature review consisting of 16 articles aquired from databases PubMed and CINAHL. Result: Patients described physical issues related to the treatment. But patients stories focused on the loss of everyday life, always having to shape their lives around the treatment, och the loss of their former identity as a result. Conclusion: The experiences described by patients seemed to change over time, and healthcare personell play a role in how this process develops.

Abstract:
This thesis is a study of four graphic novels that depicts the Israeli-Palestinian conflict: Palestine (1993) by Joe Sacco, How to Get to Know Israel in 60 Days or Less (2011) by Sarah Glidden, Not the Israel My Parents Promised Me (2014) by Harvey Pekar and JT Waldman, and Jerusalem: Chronicles from the Holy City (2011) by Guy Delisle. By comparing the graphic novels, I study the differences and similarities in regard to postcolonial aspects by applying the theoretical framework of Edward Said concerning the “Other” and the Orient. I study the making of the “Other” in the graphic novels by analyzing the use of time in comics, as well as narratological aspects such as focalization. The making of the “Other” is complicated in graphic novels due to its complex use of time and narratology, where a multitude of perspectives and aspects of time can exist simultaneously. Moreover, the theme of the conflict and concept of the “Other” and is further complicated in the graphic novels’ since the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is an ongoing and complex conflict.  This thesis aims to deepen the understanding of how the “Other” is depicted in the material. It also has an ambition to expand the knowledge of the medium by analyzing comics in regard to stereotypes and simplification as well as the comic’s subversive strategies. Furthermore, I analyze the relationship between objectivity and subjectivity in the graphic novels which are often categorized as journalistic comics. In regards to the genre I discuss its relationship with traditional journalism and the school of “New Journalism”.

The present work seeks to englobe Joy in a clinical situation and in literature. In its writing we sought to reconstruct fragments of clinical cases presented throughout a decade in several places and institutions. It has also sought to redeem a series of literary fragments, which in this way or the other, has maintained a curious proximity to the cases mentioned. The dissertation reveals this same joy, in the clinic and in critique, in four specific lines of work which compose a unique architectural structure. In the first one, there is a relation with the intensive that transforms a clinic in a space for the metamorphosis of sensations into intense vibrations. In the second one, joy appears situated in its relation to time and duration. However, in the third line of work, joy is formulated as strength and the expression of this same strength. And, in the last one we show how pain and suffering constitutes a plan conducive to joy, albeit, pain and suffering as material in a clinic, however accosted of this perspective. The conceptual research carried out in an attempt to deal with the problems was made from the encounter with the thoughts of several authors, especially Nietzsche, Espinosa and Blanchot, and mainly Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. The strategy used consisted of the minute research into clinical cases and literary short stories, the elaboration of a thought surrounding the theme joy and the careful note-taking of concepts with the persistent concern about the writing and the actual production of the paper. Concerning the procedures involved in the elaboration of the dissertation, a procedure that contemplates its own ethics, we reassure it was done with utmost joy.

Abstract:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive and irreversible disease that affects the respiratory function and causes suffering. The disease contributes to a significant need of healthcare and constitutes a large cost to society. The care needs to come from a person-centered perspective and in the form of multidisciplinary team with the purpose of promoting the patient's ability to manage their disease as well as possible. The aim of this literature study was to examine the patients experiences of living with COPD. The method was a literature study with ten scientific articles who were analyzed with the help of a five step-model. The result is presented in four themes: Everyday life limited by COPD, Coping- strategies are important to manage the disease, Experiences of wellbeing with COPD and Experiences of support needs. The conclusion is that COPD is a disease which limits the daily life greatly and contributes to experiences of lost health and wellbeing. To manage the limitations, it is important to use coping-strategies. The disease also entails a great need of support which can be met by the relatives, the healthcare system and the community.

Abstract:
This thesis purpose is to analyse the purpose and use of religious motifs, with a focus on Lutheran faith and elements of the ideal of the passive woman in Sweden during the 17th century, in three novels written by Selma Lagerlöf. The three novels are “Tösen från Stormyrtorpet”, ”Legenden om Julrosorna” and “Gudsfreden”. Neither of them have a lot written about them therefore other sources has been used. The first part consists of an introduction to Lutheran faith and values, based on Vägen mellan himmel och jord: underströmmar av luthersk livsförståelse i Selma Lagerlöfs författarskap by Margareta Brandby-Cöster. As well as a short summary of the religious landscape of Sweden during the 17th century, the female emancipation movements relation and its negative view on passive female ideal. The first part will also contain a brief summary of how Christianity and the industrialisation has affected the male image. The second part is the analysis of the three novels where the first one is “Tösen från Stormyrtorpet”. The focus will be to explore how Lutheran values are expressed in the story as well as how the female protagonist Helga is used to reveal problems in society and its view on women related to religious values. In “Legenden om Julrosorna” I look at the how Lutheran values are expressed especially the thought of love for the other and the belief that you need to be part of society to live in the world created by God for humans. In the third novel “Gudsfreden” I will examine what male identities are constructed and expressed as well as the consequences of a “Christian hero” putting himself above God. In the third and final part I will connect my thesis to the subject of Swedish with a focus on upper secondary school. I will compare it to the curriculum and discuss the importance of exploring themes in literature.

Abstract:
Background: Intimate partner violence is classified as a societal problem, hence the importance to highlight different types of violence, i.e., physical, mental, sexual and material violence. The nurses play an important role in identifying the women who are exposed to intimate partner violence. Nurses work to promote health and alleviate suffering. Purpose: The aim of the study was to describe nurses’ experiences of meeting women who seek medical attention and have been exposed to intimate partner violence.  Method: A literature review with a qualitative approach where 12 articles were compiled and analyzed with the five-step method according to Friberg (2017). Results: The result showed nurses' experiences in meeting women who have been exposed to intimate partner violence and are presented through three main categories; Nurses’ prerequisites (Knowledge and development and Experience), Prerequisites in care facilities (Time constraints, Routines and Team collaboration) and Nurses' manageability (Reactions in the meeting and The importance of relationships). Conclusion: Nurses’ confidence in caring for abused women can increase by increasing nurses’ competence and expanding resources in care facilities. The identification and care of abused women can thereby improve.

Bokström, Malin, and Henrik Tellefsen. "Strategier för att förebygga och reducera perioperativ oro hos barn : En systematisk litteraturstudie." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för hälso- och vårdvetenskap (HV), 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-81983.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Today numerous paediatric surgeries are performed – In Sweden, 2017, approximately 90 000 children from zero to fourteen years of age underwent surgery/were operated on. To receive anaesthesia and have an operation is probably among the most disturbing and stressful a child can experience. Anxiety is found in 50-75% of children undergoing surgery. Anxiety can, among other things, complicate anesthesia, increase medical need and cause postoperative complications. Purpose: The aim was to elucidate strategies to prevent and reduce children’s perioperative anxiety through a systematic literature review. Method: A systematic literature review with quantitative approach. Children two to twelwe years of age who are to undergo or have undergone anesthesia and surgery. Article searches were carried out in three, for the subject area, relevant databases. Result: The study comprises 25 result articles that show varying strategies for dealing with children's perioperative anxiety. Five of these did not show any superior or reducing effect compared to conventional or comparative strategies. Information and distraction were distinguished as main categories. Multimedia was a prominent subcategory that included several different strategies. Some protruding strategies included scented inhalation masks and theater performances. Conclusion: There is a variation in how anxiety can be managed to be prevented and reduced in pediatric perioperative care. The strategies in the sub-category multimedia appear prominent in this study, which may indicate that these strategies occur to a greater extent within this form of care. It was made clear that there is no single individual strategy considered to be accepted or superior to others. A nonpharmacological strategy might be preferred as it can be considered a safe, non-invasive and thus pleasant alternative to conventional pharmacological strategies such as premedication.

Liljeroth, Jennifer, and Lisa Tannerfalk. "Lätt sederade patienter under invasiv ventilation : En strukturerad litteraturstudie om patientupplevelser." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för hälso- och vårdvetenskap (HV), 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-81751.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Earlier research show that invasive ventilation has been uncomfortable for the patients. Therefore the patients have been deeply sedated. Routines have changed and the patients are nowadays often lightly sedated during invasive ventilation in the ICU. Light sedation results in positive physical effects. It's important to illuminate the patients'  experiences by light sedation during invasive ventilation. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe lightly sedated patients experiences during invasive ventilation in the ICU.  Method: A structured literature study with systematic data collection was implemented. 13 articles was included after quality control. The qualitative content were analyzed with data extraction.  Result: The result were constituted by the following three main categories with subcategories: Experiences of the condition, Experiences of being seen and heard, and Experiences by yearning. The patients expressed both positive and negative experiences associated with light sedation. Experiences of powerlessness and lost dignity were central parts of the result. Nevertheless, the majority of patients wanted to be lightly sedated. Several areas of improvement emerged from the result based on the patients' experiences. Conclusion: The result can provide the ICU-nurse with increased knowledge about the patients experiences of care during improvement within the intensive care. Patients hospital stay could be facilitated by health-promoted actions and reduced risk of suffering in care. The authors believe that nurse-patient ratio 1:1 can provide increased patient-focused care. The literature study has also illustrated the existing research and ideas for further research.

Abstract:
In this study of Lev Shestov, the biographical method is used to explain his philosophy. The grave crisis or nervous breakdown Shestov went through caused a total transformation of his - convictions and values. It was probably this drama that led to his repudiation of the common life and traditional philosophy with its emphasis on reason, knowledge, and ethics in favour of an extreme individualism and religious transcendence. The aim of the dissertation is to examine, amongst the great number of philosophers and writers Shestov analysed, mainly those in his view “marginal thinkers”, who were of the greatest interest to him – Fyodor Dostoevsky, Lev Tolstoy, Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Luther, and Søren Kierkegaard. On the basis of this analysis the character of Shestov’s philosophy is defined. According to Shestov, like his own crisis, the crises that these thinkers experienced occasioned a total transformation of their convictions and values. Šestov does not let his life find complete expression in his philosophy. Instead he projects his crisis into the five thinkers’ crises and philosophy. To characterize the previous and new modes of thinking, the concepts of alienation (degeneration, degradation, depravity) and authenticity (deliverance from alienation) are used. Shestov’s judgment of the consistency of the five thinkers’ new attitudes is presented, i.e. deliverance from the common life with its emphasis on rational eternal truths and moralism. Authentic life is in Shestov’s opinion the from the individual’s everyday life concealed experience of despair in extreme situations. This constitutes a grave crisis that leads to the repudiation of all hitherto held convictions and cherished hopes. The contrast between the Russian philosopher’s personal, (after his crisis) mainly tranquil, harmonious life and his philosophy is glaring. Analyzing the five thinkers, Shestov finds that they did not persevere with their new convictions, instead they complied with the by everybody accepted and everywhere valid truths. Shestov’s “theoretical”, uncompromising and consistent stance on one side and the lack of these characteristics with the aforementioned thinkers on the other side, to a great extent places Shestov in another category than these. In Shestov’s view freedom is in the region of tragedy, which nobody enters on his own will and in the incomprehensible trust in a capricious, “inhuman” God. According to Shestov, only the philosopher, who derives his thinking from a situation, where he experiences extreme despair and hopelessness, can claim to be a true philosopher.

Kronqvist, Tora, and Ida Wallerstig. "Specialistsjuksköterskor på IVA kan lindra lidande hos patienten som vårdas oralt intuberad genom munvårdsåtgärder : En kvantitativ litteraturstudie." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Sjuksköterskeutbildningar, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-444901.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Patients who is orally intubated in intensive care units gradually deteriorates oral health. Endotracheal tubes causes dry mouth, pressure ulcers, bacteria and plaque, which implies suffering from affected oral health. The study focuses in the specialist nurse's role in preventing and alleviating patients’ suffering by examining measures of oral care whichaffects oral health. Aim: To compile measures of oral care that affect oral health in patients who are orally intubated. Method: Quantitative literature review with systematic approach. The impact of oral care on oral health has in the studies been measured through different outcomes and methods. The result of the oral cares’ impact on oral health were compiled through the categories mouthwash, mechanical cleaning, oral care protocol and endotracheal tube fixation, divided by the outcomes bacteria and plaque and the status of oral mucosa. Results: Mouthwashes resulted in varied positive, absent and negative effects on bacteria and plaque as well as the oral mucosa. All methods of mechanical cleaning had a positive effect on oral health. Oral care protocols with individualized frequency and repositioning of the endotracheal tube had a positive effect on oral health. Endotracheal tube fixations affected the oral mucosa both positively and negatively. Conclusion: Oral care affects oral health of patients who are orally intubated with both positively, absent and negatively effect. Specialist nurses can prevent and alleviate thepatient's suffering with assessment of oral health and individualized oral care. It is of utmost importance that the nurse evaluates the effect since oral care also can result in negative impact on oral health.
