Barozzi, Laura. Italienisches Capriccio di Glauco Pellegrini. Venice: Fondazione Università Ca’ Foscari, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.30687/978-88-6969-452-3.

Full text
Abstract:

Grafius, Brandon. The Witch. Liverpool University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781800348356.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The book offers an overview of the religious history, generic background, and folklore influences on Robert Eggers’ film The Witch (2015). In addition, it provides close readings of the film and the individual characters which argues for the film as a critique of patriarchal family structures. The religious background of the film’s Puritan context is explored, including a discussion of some of the documents which Eggers used for his screenplay. The film is placed in the context of 21st century horror cinema, with an argument for its place in the context of the current wave of folk horror.

In 1955 Edith and Penrose undertook sabbaticals at the Australian National University in Canberra. Edith and her three sons travelled across the USA by train and sailed from California. She and Fritz Machlup corresponded extensively whilst she was away discussing the draft of her book, The Theory of the Growth of the Firm, particularly the final chapters. In Australia she encountered and began to study the multinational firm or enterprise, writing her first articles on the subject. The family returned to the USA via the Suez Canal and sailed from Southampton to New York so that Edith and her sons had completed a round the world voyage.

Full text
Abstract:
SEE! HEAR! CUT! KILL!: Experiencing Friday the 13th, is the first book entirely devoted to the analysis of the Friday the 13 th franchise. The story a film tells is usually filtered through a particular perspective, or point of view. This book argues that slasher films, and the Friday the 13th movies particularly, use all the stylistic tools at their disposal to create a complex and emotionally intense approach to perspective, which develops and shifts across the decades. Chapter one discusses the history of perspective in horror, and the different critical conversations around this. Chapter two looks at the use of camerawork, specifically point-of-view camerawork in the way these films visually communicate perspective. The fourth chapter talks about the way sound and editing work together to communicate perspective and experience in the death sequences these movies capitalize upon. The fourth chapter considers the perspective of viewers, and how each movie speaks to viewers who are either familiar or unfamiliar with the ongoing story in the series. The final chapter first explains how these trends look across a chronological timeline, and what this tells us about the historical development of perspective before looking at the influence these stylistic approaches have had on ‘serious’ film, particularly those recognized by the Hollywood critical establishment.

Evans-Powell, David. The Blood on Satan's Claw. Liverpool University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781800348349.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Widely regarded as one of the foundational 'Unholy Trinity' of folk horror film, The Blood on Satan's Claw (1971) has been comparatively over-shadowed, if not maligned, when compared to Witchfinder General (1968) and The Wicker Man (1973). While those horror bedfellows are now accepted as classics of British cinema, Piers Haggard's film remains undervalued, ironically so, given that it was Haggard who coined the term 'folk horror' in relation to his film. In this Devil's Advocate - the first monograph dedicated solely to an analysis of the film, and released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the film’s release - David Evans-Powell explores the place of the film in the wider context of the folk horror sub-genre; its use of a seventeenth-century setting (which it shares with contemporaries such as Witchfinder General and Cry of the Banshee) in contrast to the generic nineteenth-century locales of Hammer; the influences of contemporary counter-culture and youth movement on the film; the importance of localism and landscape; the relationship between cultural notions of nature and civilisation; and the film as an expression of a wider contemporary crisis in English identity.

Herle, Anita, and Jude Philp, eds. Recording Kastom. Sydney University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.30722/sup.9781743326480.

Full text
Abstract:
Recording Kastom brings readers into the heart of colonial Torres Strait and New Guinea through the personal journals of Cambridge zoologist and anthropologist Alfred Haddon, who visited the region in 1888 and 1898. Haddon's published reports of these trips were hugely influential on the nascent discipline of anthropology, but his private journals and sketches have never been published in full. The journals record in vivid detail Haddon's observations and relationships. They highlight his preoccupation with documentation, and the central role played by the Islanders who worked with him to record kastom. This collaboration resulted in an enormous body of materials that remain of vital interest to Torres Strait Islanders and the communities where he worked. Haddon's Journals provide unique and intimate insights into the colonial history of the region will be an important resource for scholars in history, anthropology, linguistics and musicology. This comprehensively annotated edition assembles a rich array of photographs, drawings, artefacts, film and sound recordings. An introductory essay provides historical and cultural context. The preface and epilogue provide Islander perspectives on the historical context of Haddon’s work and its significance for the future.

Walden, Kiri Bloom. Peeping Tom. Liverpool University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3828/liverpool/9781800348370.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Reviled on it’s release, Peeping Tom all-but ended the career of celebrated director Michael Powell. The story of a murderous cameraman and his compulsion to record his killings, Powell’s film stunned the same critics who had acclaimed him for work he had made with Emeric Pressburger (as ‘The Archers’) in the years before. Luckily Peeping Tom was rediscovered and saved, largely due to the efforts of Martin Scorsese, and it is now considered a masterpiece of the Horror genre. In this Devil’s Advocate, published in the wake of the film’s 60th Anniversary, Kiri Bloom Walden charts the origins, production, and devastating critical reception of Peeping Tom, comparing it to another key film released in 1960, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. The author has interviewed people close to Powell to gain new insight into how he approached making the films and reacted to the way it was initially rejected.

Myers, Carla S. Copyright and Course Reserves. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216184911.

Full text
Abstract:
With the guidance of this book, academic librarians wishing to provide print, electronic, and streaming media (music and film) course reserve services for their campus communities can do so in compliance with U.S. copyright law. Many academic libraries offer print and electronic course reserve services that encourage learning by connecting students and faculty with less expensive and supplementary educational materials. Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions regarding how U.S. copyright law affects course reserve services; as a result, many academic libraries restrict the scope of the services they provide or refrain from pursuing new options, such as media reserves, out of fear of violating the law or being sued for copyright infringement. Copyright and Course Reserves addresses this problem, providing authoritative advice for making print, electronic, and media course reserves available in compliance with U.S. copyright law. It explains options for implementing and sustaining media reserve services through which students and faculty can access online music, sound recordings, and film. Additionally, short examples from a wide range of libraries explore real-world scenarios and current issues related to course reserve services to help readers better understand and apply the information found in the book.

Papanikolaou, Dimitris. Greek Weird Wave. Edinburgh University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474436311.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is the first to provide a reading of the recent ‘Weird’ or ‘New Wave’ of Greek cinema, both through the concept of biopolitics and in the context of contemporary World Cinema politics, aesthetics, as well as production and circulation strategies. Its main aim is to show the ways in which, since the beginning of the 21st century, cinema and other cultural forms in Greece have responded to a sense of Crisis and an ever expansive management of life that we have now come to call biopolitics. Through close cultural and film analysis, the Greek Weird Wave is proposed as a paradigmatic cinema of biopolitical realism, a trend observable more widely in world cinema today. Key films such as Yorgos Lantimos’s Dogtooth, Alps and The Lobster, Athina Rachel Tsangari’s Attenberg, Syllas Tzoumerkas’s Homeland, Alexandros Avranas’s Miss Violence and Panos H. Koutras’s Strella, are read together with less well-known short, medium and feature-length films by directors such as Konstantina Kotzamani, Yorgos Zois, Vassilis Kekatos, Alexandros Voulgaris, Argyris Papadimitropoulos, Babis Makridis. At the same time, the book offers an analysis of the larger cultural context of 21st-century Greece, often explaining the films’ major thematic and formal choices through references to contemporary novels, theatre performances, activist texts and political events.

Reades, Jonathan, and Martin Crookston. Why Face-to-Face Still Matters. Policy Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1332/policypress/9781529215991.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Face-to-Face: The Persistent Power of Cities In a Post-Pandemic Era, is about the way that people and firms are adapting to the world of always-on and everywhere digital access, and what that means for cities and regions. Twenty years after The Death of Distance—and in the midst of a pandemic that has led some to question the future of cities—many people still think that we are on track for ‘business anywhere’. The book shows why that's not the case, and provides a structure for thinking about the next twenty years of social and economic upheaval. It shows how the changing fortunes of cities are tied to the ongoing importance of face-to-face contact to our most valuable industries, and thus why the ‘human touch’ will continue to be crucial in the cities of tomorrow. Drawing on interviews with artists and advertisers, bankers and bakers, software devs and property developers, across some forty interviews we home in on what people actually do and why. ‘Contact’, in all its forms, is shown to still matter hugely to companies and individuals, even in a world with high-quality video conferencing and free online calling. And when the pandemic hit, a further digital survey explored interviewees’ experiences of an ‘e-only’ world, gaining ‘front-line’ insights into the short- and long-terms. The book seeks to provide guidance for city leaders, businesses, policymakers and students of urban and regional planning on how to think about 21st Century urban change.

Fisk, Nathan. Understanding Online Piracy. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216029663.

Full text
Abstract:
The complex world of online piracy and peer-to-peer file sharing is skillfully condensed into an easy-to-understand guide that provides insight into the criminal justice approach to illegal file sharing, while offering guidance to parents and students who have concerns about potential legal action in response to file-sharing activities. While the actual impact of digital piracy is nearly impossible to precisely calculate, the threat of financial damage from illegal peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing to the world's highest-grossing entertainment firms (and even entire industries!) has garnered attention from government, industry, and academic leaders and criminal justice professionals. Oftentimes, those providing access to computers and file sharing capabilities-parents, schools, libraries-don't know about or understand these activities and, therefore, put themselves and their families at risk for criminal and civil prosecution. This work describes the technological, legal, social, and ethical facets of illegal peer-to-peer file sharing. Geared toward parents, teachers, librarians, students, and any other computer user engaged in file sharing, this book will help readers to understand all forms of traditional and digital copyright violations of protected music, movies, and software. To date over 18,000 P2P users have been sued by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Most of these users have been college students and parents of high-school students. While word of these law suits are spreading, and many parents fear that their children may be using a family computer to illegally download and share copyrighted works, few supervising adults have the technical knowledge needed to determine whether and to what extent pirating may be occurring via a computer and Internet connection they are legally responsible for. Additionally, while P2P networks are filled with millions of users with billions of copyrighted files, few users understand the ways in which they are illegally using computers and other mobile electronic devices to download protected content. While describing both technical and social issues, this book primarily focuses on the social aspects of illegal file sharing, and provides technical concepts at a general level. Fisk skillfully condenses the complex nature of file sharing systems into an easy-to-understand guide, provides insight into the criminal justice approach to illegal file sharing, and offers guidance to parents and students who have concerns about potential legal action in response to file sharing activities.
