Rathee, Vikas, and Vikas Rathee. "Narratives of the 1658 War of Succession for the Mughal Throne, 1658-1707." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/579017.

Abstract:
This dissertation studies certain Hindi and Persian narratives of the War of Succession (1658) to succeed Shah Jahan (r.1627-1658). All the narratives under study were written during the reign of Aurangzeb (r.1658-1707), the successor of Shah Jahan. The study evaluates the significance of the War as a landmark moment in the social history of India, especially in the formation and inter-relationships between religious communities. The dissertation demarcates the larger epistemological and ontological canvas on which these communities took shape and interacted with each other. The research outlines the ways and the contexts in which terms such as Hindu, momin, musalman, Islam, din and Rajput were deployed in literary texts. It asks whether Hinduism and Islam were two disparate traditions, as previous histories of the War and Mughal India had contended. The dissertation argues that social communities of Hindus and Muslims were mutually and similarly circumscribed within an Islamic worldview and concept of din. Hindu traditions could portray Muslims in concepts and terms borrowed from Indian epics but within an over-arching Islamic cultural dispensation. The War was not a moment of evolution between two independent Hindu and Muslim traditions. Rather, the War was a moment that saw the evolution, even if it be of an antagonistic kind, of Hindu and Muslim traditions within a larger Islamic framework. Besides the above primary focus, the dissertation provides the reader with important insights and overviews regarding allied subjects such as the literary histories of Persian and of Hindi/Urdu, especially in the Dingal and Khari Boli dialects, the political culture of Hindu India, Rajput political culture, Mughal political culture, patronage networks in Mughal India, notions of soldierly duty in seventeenth century India, language and status, preaching in the Hindu and Islamic traditions, the sociological ideas of acculturation and Islamisation, and twentieth century history-writing.

Harper, Leah Wheelbarger. "Plant Biodiversity across Three Successional Stages in Forests of Southern Illinois." OpenSIUC, 2020. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/2794.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the time of European settlement, land-use history, management practices, the introduction of non-native invasive species (NNIS), and climate change have dramatically changed the successional pathways of Southern Illinois forests. Biodiversity is considered essential for ecosystem health and resiliency, so understanding the impact theses forest changes have on biodiversity is necessary to guide future management decisions. This study was conducted at Touch of Nature Environmental Center (TONEC) in Southern Illinois using the Shannon diversity index (H') to compare the levels of biodiversity in the overstory, shrub, seedling, and herbaceous layers across early, mid, and mature successional stages. Twenty plots were randomly placed within early, mid, and mature forest successional stages for a total of 60 plots. Four circular nested vegetation plots were recorded at each plot location. In the overstory plots (area 314.16 m2), woody stems above 6.5 cm diameter at breast height (dbh), age class, and crown were all recorded. In the shrub layer (area 28.27 m2), all woody stems between 2.5 and 6.5 cm dbh were recorded, while in the seedling layer (area 3.14 m2), all woody stems < 1 cm dbh were recorded. In the herbaceous layer, (area 1 m2) species were measured by percent cover. Shannon diversity index (H') was calculated for each plot. When vegetation layers were combined and mean H' within forest successional stages were compared, no differences were found. However, when successional stages were combined within each vegetation layer, the shrub layer had the least H' increasing to seedling, increasing again to overstory and herbaceous; these being equal. When breaking down the vegetation layers separately and comparing H' across successional stages within each, both the overstory and shrub layers had no difference. Early successional was the least diverse in seedling, rising to mid and mature, which were equal. The herbaceous layer showed an opposite trend with early having the highest H' decreasing to mid and decreasing again to mature. Finally looking at the differences across vegetation layers within early, mid, and mature successional stages. Early-successional had the most variability with the highest H' in herbaceous; this decreased progressively to overstory then to shrub and seedling, which were equal. In mid-successional plots, overstory, seedling, and herbaceous layers were equal with H' decreasing in shrub. In mature plots, all vegetation layers had the same H'. Across all vegetation layers, the highest percentage of NNIS was in early-successional, followed by mid, with notably less found in mature forest. Even in instances where H' values were the same, species composition across forest successional stages were quite different. While overall biodiversity is the same across successional stages, differences in H' can be seen when looking at the vegetation layers. Management should focus on removing NNIS in the early and mid-successional forests paying particular attention to the shrub layer, which has the overall lowest H' with the most dramatic differences in composition and the presence of NNIS across all successional stages. Also of concern is the low H' in the seedling layer in early-successional forest, which reduces the likelihood of successful regeneration of these hardwood stands in the future.

Sutherland, Terri. "Phytoplankton succession and resting stage occurrence in three regions in Sechelt Inlet, British Columbia." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30379.

Full text
Abstract:
Phytoplankton were monitored in three regions in Sechelt Inlet, British Columbia between June and September in 1989. The purpose was to compare the phytoplankton community (region I) transported into the inlet via a strong tidal jet to that which exists inside the inlet (region II) and in an inner shallow basin (region III). Core samples were also collected to compare the phytoplankton present at the water-sediment interface. In 1989 between June and September the temperature, salinity, and nutrient profiles show that the hydrographic conditions in region I were well-mixed, while those in region III were well-stratified. The conditions in region II fluctuated between mixed and stratified conditions. The depths of the 1 % light levels were generally deeper in region I. The depth of the 1 % light level fell above the nitricline in region II on September 25 and in region III on June 9 and July 8. In region III nitrogen and ammonium levels fell below 1 μM in the surface waters between June 25 and September 8. The nitrogen to phosphorus ratios in regions I, II, and III were 8.6, 7.5, and 7.2 respectively. Diatoms exhibited the highest relative biomass of the total phytoplankton groups in regions I and II. Fluctuations within each plankton group were more gradual in region III than those in region I. A reciprocal dominance of diatom to dinoflagellate biomass was observed from one sampling trip to another. The vertical distributions of dinoflagellates, photosynthetic flagellates, and diatoms reveal uniform profiles in region I and thin horizontal layers in region II and III. The biomass maxima of these phytoplankton groups in region III generally remain below the nutrient-depleted surface waters. A temporal succession was observed in region I. Small changes in the relative percent of successional phytoplankton stages in region II and III were observed over the sampling period. The distribution of potentially harmful phytoplankton such as Heterosigma akashiwo, Protogonyaulax catenella and P. tamarensis, Prorocentrum minimum, Dinophysis fortii and D. acuminata, Chaetoceros convolutum and Ch. concavicorne, and Nitzschia pungens are discussed in the text. The water-sediment interface samples of region III in contained the highest number of phytoplankton. Chaetoceros spp. resting spores were found only in region III. Auxospores of Skeletonema costatum were formed only in the incubated cores of region I and III. The mean diameter of sedimented S. costatum cells found in the core samples was significantly different than the mean cell diameter of the larger post-auxospore cells.

Full text
Abstract:
Large school districts face a number of challenges due to their sheer size. One of these challenges involves staffing the role of the principal. With Baby Boomers reaching retirement age, large school districts, especially those experiencing growth, have to fill numerous leadership positions. In order to fill these positions efficiently and effectively, many school districts are beginning to develop and implement succession planning programs to expand their internal pool of leadership candidates. Succession planning strategies have been utilized in the business world for years and the education realm is beginning to realize their value. This study explores three large school districts in a southeastern state and their efforts to implement effective succession planning systems. While all three districts have a variety of strategies in place, none of the districts have a comprehensive, written succession plan and corresponding evaluation. Other similarities across the three districts include administrator certification programs, coaching programs, the predominant use of self-selection into succession planning initiatives, the principal position as the focal point, and the value of utilizing the cohort concept. Some differences across the three districts are the departments and positions responsible for succession planning initiatives, the categorization of some strategies as succession planning, and an additional position as a secondary focal point.

Sunnetcioglu, Mehmet Akif. "A Sequence Stratigraphic Approach To The Depositional History Analysis Of The Upper Eocene Sedimentary Succession, Northwest Of The Thrace Basin, Turkey." Phd thesis, METU, 2008. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12609346/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the depositional history of the Late Eocene sedimentary record in the northwest of the Thrace Basin in a sequence stratigraphic approach and estimates the contribution of regional tectonics, basin physiography and eustasy. Late Eocene sedimentary succession was analyzed in two third-order sequences based on two major data sets
seismic reflection and well data sets. Depositional Sequence-1, represented by progradational stacking patterns, comprises the coarse-grained Hamitabat turbidite system. The base of the Sequence-1 was defined as the base of channel fill deposits in the northern shelf setting and the base of slope fan deposits in the slope setting. This boundary separates Lower-Middle and Upper Eocene sediments. In the slope setting, the Hamitabat turbidite system was analyzed in three major depocenters
Western, Northwestern and Northeastern depocenters respectively. Hamitabat turbidite system was controlled by the interaction of regional tectonics, basin physiography and eustatic fluctuations in the Late Eocene. This study highlighted the role of the regional variables
tectonic influence and basin morphology on the submarine canyon formation. The facies distribution was controlled by the high subsidence rate of sea-floor dominantly instead of eustasy. Depositional Sequence-2, represented by mostly retrogradational stacking patterns, is a clastic-carbonate mixed system. Depositional Sequence-2 was subdivided into three higher-order sequences. The lower sequence boundaries were induced by the rapid relative sea-level rise. The upper boundary of the Depositional Sequence-2 was defined as the termination of clastic-carbonate mixed system and a candidate for the Eocene-Oligocene contact.

Abstract:
It is presented results from observations of gross rainfall and throughfall regimes for three successional phases in a stand located at Caçambe sub-basin, Pedra Branca massif, Rio de Janeiro. From 04/11/10 to 04/11/11 were carried 27 samplings after the rain events. Gross rainfall and throughfall were measured with 12 rain gauges in an area of advanced secondary forest, 6 in an early secondary succession and 6 in the edge. Total gross rainfall was 2357,07 mm. Average throughfall, 89±13% in the edge, 94±14% in initial secondary bush and 75±07% in advanced secondary forest, are in range of literature values for the Atlantic Rain Forest. Interception increased simultaneously to the advance of the secondary succession. This improved interception suggests the importance of forest preservation to mitigate flooding in vulnerable cities such as Rio de Janeiro. Chemical analysis for Na+, K+, Mg+2 e Ca+2 were evaluated in 12 out of 27 rain events. The results resembled literature, with the exception of high total quantity and concentration to Ca+2. The urban-industrial expansion in the zone west of the city is spoiling the forest patch and probably is causing the excess of metal emissions at Caçambe. In addition, Rio Centro record confirms a growing gross rainfall tendency in the end of this decade. From December to April is the mass movement and flooding period in Rio de Janeiro and its increasing intensity of gross rainfall completes the environmental fragility scenario.

Mitchell, Robin A. "A comparison of three natural succession chronosequence case studies from the South Island, New Zealand to select predictable indices for evaluating restoration success." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Forestry, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4802.

Full text
Abstract:
Evaluating the success of ecological restoration interventions in establishing self-sustaining development toward distant goals within project timescales is problematic. Trajectory analysis is a promising evaluation strategy to this end yet it has received little research attention and is uncommonly used. This thesis aims to identify indices predictable enough to be suitable for trajectory analysis, focusing plant assemblage structure. The primary objectives were to: a) accurately infer plant assemblage development gradients of primary successions in three different ecosystems of the South Island, New Zealand by means of sampling well aged chronosequences, and b) establish which indices had sufficiently strong and consistent response trajectories to all three inferred vegetation development gradients to be considered predictable. The vascular plant assemblages of at least five development stages in each of the three sites were sampled intensively using multiple fixed area plots. Ordination and stepwise regression established that age was highly correlated with the main floristic gradient and environmental variables were unimportant in explaining floristic variation. Data for index calculation consisted of plant species cover abundance and leaf area estimates as well as soil chemical properties. Development stage age estimates enabled index response trajectories to be constructed from stage mean values. Regression models were fitted to observed index trajectories for each site to test response strength and predictability. Comparisons of regression statistics and trajectories among the three sites for each index showed that the majority of indices had predictable responses to all sites; these were: soil pH and organic carbon, importance score, Simpson's species diversity, distance from the lognormal model of species relative abundance distribution, growth form diversity, taxonomic distinctness and DCA axis one. Together, these indices are suggested to be able to evaluate if development trajectories indicate progress towards three restoration goals via intermediate objectives. These goals are: 1) a persistent plant assemblage, 2) a plant assemblage with specific structural attributes and 3) a well functioning ecosystem. For trajectory analysis to effectively evaluate restoration success with these goals it is recommended that recovery gradients are long, monitoring periods are at least three decades and multiple indices are used that convey complementary information.

Abstract:
Nyckelord: Femininitet, Game of Thrones, populärkultur, representation, kvinnlig identitet, performativitet.

Abstract:
This thesis provides a detailed interpretation of three key texts described in Egyptological research as "coronation inscriptions:" the Historical Inscription of Hatshepsut, Thutmose III's Texte de la jeunesse, and Horemheb's Turin inscription. Similarities and differences between these texts, as well as other sources, both textual and pictorial, are discussed. A clear terminology is laid out, distinguishing between accession (the royal heir becoming king at the death of their predecessor), crowning (the action of placing the crowns on the new king's head), and coronation ceremony (following the accession by some time on which occasion the new ruler would have been bestowed with the crowns and regalia of his office, perhaps for the first time). The main aim of this thesis is to determine whether it would be accurate to label the discussed texts as coronation inscriptions and, if not, how they can best be described. It is determined that the evidence supports the earlier conclusion reached by Redford, that it would be incorrect to speak of a “coronation ceremony” in the dynastic period, for new kings would have been crowned at their accessions in a palace setting, soon after the death of their predecessors, this followed some time later by a public “appearance ceremony” in a temple festival setting. While it is determined that Thutmose III's inscription describes the time when kingship was predicted to him, it is concluded that the Hatshepsut and Horemheb texts narrate exceptional events on which occasion their accessions in a palace and public "appearance ceremonies" intersected.

Abstract:
The life and fate of Maximilian I, the last emperor of Mexico, has attracted a substantial amount of research since his death in 1867. However, these works either only deal with the last few years of Maximilian’s life, from his candidature for the Mexican throne to his death at the hands of the Mexican liberals, or with other aspects of his life such as his time as governor of Lombardy-Venetia. Thus the main aim of this thesis is to offer a biography of Maximilian, which will not only look at Maximilian’s reign as emperor of Mexico but will also examine the Habsburg aspect of the story. It is thus necessary to look at the extent to which his Habsburg upbringing, his education and his experiences as governor of Lombardy-Venetia shaped his idea of kingship; how his travels and his time in Italy conditioned him to regard the “other” in a certain imperial way; and how all these essentially Habsburg experiences and ideas played a part in his failure and demise in Mexico. This thesis will thus aim to give a rounded picture the life and death of Maximilian I by examining his upbringing, his education, and his experiences in the navy and in Lombardy-Venetia. For without an understanding of these it is impossible to fully comprehend Maximilian’s actions in Mexico.

Huang, Qingan. "The power of words : CEOs' psychological influences : exit, change & hold : the stories of leadership succession : three empirical studies on companies in the FTSE All-Share Index." Thesis, City, University of London, 2014. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/17608/.

Full text
Abstract:
Leadership transition is a critical period for any organizations. By researching finns in the FTSE All-Share Index, this thesis offers three empirical studies to explore some interesting problems in this important epoch. The samples used for the research are those companies that changed their CEOs in a six-year (from 2002 to 2007) window. This study identified the importance of CEOs' psychological factors not only for the predecessors but also for the new leaders. The first study looks at the old CEOs before the CEO turnover; the second and third studies follow the new CEOs longitudinally after the succession. The first essay investigates how old CEOs' psychological factors influence their types of departure, i.e. voluntary and involuntary CEO turnovers. This study integrates both cognitive and emotional factors, appreciating the proactive roles of CEOs in the leadership succession process. Apart from conventional reasons, e.g. firms' prior perfonnance, old CEOs' power, their future focus attention (FF A) and negative emotion (NE) provide crucial explanations determining the turnover types. Empirically, this study identifies that the level of CEOs' FF A, signaling the planned career management behaviors, will increase the likelihood of voluntary CEO turnover. I also found that the level of CEOs' NE, reflecting the uncooperative behaviors, will increase the likelihood of involuntary CEO turnover. The second essay studies how new CEOs' psychological factors influence the post succession strategic changes (PSSC) of firms. Using the trilogy of mind perspective, on top of cognition, I advocate that new CEOs' emotion and conation serve as the impetus for the PSSC. By tracing the identical new CEOs over years after their succession, the empirical results of this longitudinal study demonstrate that those intra-individual psychological (time-varying) factors of new CEOs are important for the PSSc. New CEOs' future focus attention (FF A), commitment to change (C2C) will significantly increase the PSSC and new CEOs' negative emotion (NE) will significantly reduce the PSSC. Based on the cognitive continuum theory (CCT), the third research study advocates that new CEOs' cognitive reasoning provides new explanations for the mechanism behind the cash holding phenomenon. It is down to CEOs to appreciate the needs and the associated risks. I identify that the degree of analysis (DoA) in new CEOs' cognitive continuum will increase firms' cash holding level because DoA tends to raise the calculated transaction costs, the management controls, the uncertainty avoidance behaviors and the opportunity costs. Using a psycholinguistic approach and computer-aided text analysis (CATA) technique, directly measuring CEOs' mind, we expect to explore the "black box" ofCEOs' roles comprehensively in the leadership succession period.

Abstract:
Abstract Background The succession process of a family firm is associated with a number of challenges, and hence a potential for conflicts is strongly pronounced. However, succession is of utmost importance for a family firm, as it is the only way to avoid a company closure in the long run. Previous literature has already extensively researched the phenomena of conflicts in family firms. However, there is a lack of research that looks from a multi-perspective lens into the context of succession and post-succession conflicts. Therefore, in the present research, we examine how family businesses experience and cope conflicts that appear after a successfully mastered intrafamily succession. Purpose This study aims to advance the understanding of conflicts in family firms related explicitly to the context of successions and post-successions. Hence, the thesis aims to determine how conflicts that appear in these contexts are experienced and how they are coped with. Method The study follows a qualitative methodological approach and an inductive analysis. The sample consists of three companies and 14 research respondents, and the data was collected with semi-structured qualitative interviews. Afterwards, the data was coded, and the emerging patterns and themes have been formulated and presented with a general model. Doing so, the focus was on patterns of succession- and post-succession-related conflicts and their coping strategies. Conclusion Our findings reveal that succession and post-succession-related conflicts are experienced as evoked intangible and provoked tangible conflicts and these conflicts are consciously as well as unconsciously coped with. Furthermore, our findings suggest that succession and post-succession family firm conflicts appear as conflict loops. Hence, the coping mechanisms identified and presented are helpful to solve a conflict, but the loop can hardly be escaped.

Public management is a field of study within public administration that is gaining momentum and is strengthening both its theoretical and empirical bases. In this dissertation I build upon the very small literature on managerial (or executive) succession to develop a theory of the effects of managerial succession on performance. I posit that in the short-term performance will decrease; however, over time organizations that have had a succession event will see an increase in performance. I employ the use of three unique datasets: Texas school district superintendents, British local education authorities, and Major League Baseball field managers. All datasets have particular strengths that allow for a more complete empirical analysis. What we find is that, while there appears to be no significant relationship between managerial succession and performance in the year following the succession event, there is a positive and significant event over time. Furthermore, in the British analysis, which is designed to test a similar organization to the Texas analysis yet in a vastly different organizational structure, we find no significant relationship between performance and succession.

Abstract:
The Golden Throne Quadrangle is located within Capitol Reef National Park, south-central Utah. Geologic mapping of this 1:24,000 scale 7.5 minute quadrangle began in 2003 as the National Parks Service desired to have geologic maps at this scale produced within the park. Stratigraphically, ten bedrock formations and ten Quaternary deposits are exposed within the Golden Throne Quadrangle. Geologic formations range in age from Permian to Jurassic. This map contains details not included on previous geologic maps including; the members of the Carmel, Chinle, and Moenkopi Formations. Additionally, the Page Sandstone is herein mapped as an independent unit. Structurally the Golden Throne Quadrangle encompasses most of the southern quarter of the Miners Mountain uplift. The crest of this southwest verging uplift is cut by the left-lateral strike-slip Teasdale Fault zone. Preparation of a cross-section through the axis of the uplift within the quadrangle has not permitted the use of usual faulting and folding mechanisms (i.e. fault-bend folds and fault-propagation folds) for the creation of the uplift. Two structural models can account for the geometries observed in the field. The first model is a high angle reverse basement fault; the second model is a fold over an inverted basin. The Jurassic Page Sandstone, in the Golden Throne Quadrangle, is composed of the Harris Wash and Thousand Pockets Members, which are divided by the Judd Hollow Tongue, a member of the overlying Carmel Formation It represents an erg deposit and is primarily composed of eolian sandstone. Study of the formation within the Golden Throne Quadrangle helped in the understanding of its local characteristics. Previous research has helped to develop a regional stratigraphic framework for the Page Sandstone. This study cannot be easily incorporated into the regional framework of previous studies. In order to fully understand the sedimentology of the Page Sandstone additional research will need to be accomplished.

Abstract:

Individual level factors related to the successor have a central role to play in the succession process of the business. When these factors are viewed in relation to succession planning models, these factors have a direct relation to the succession models in terms of success or failure of the succession process. The major contributing factor to the success or failure of the succession process is that of the leadership provided to the organization by the predecessor. These leadership qualities change from one form to another during different phases of the succession planning models.

Abstract:
It is difficult these days to determine all the persons entitled to inherit under french succession law. The concept of the family has considerably changed : often the traditionnal family circle is widely dispersed and the number of families with illegitimate off spring is on the increase. This development accounts for the emergence of an unusual profession known as succession genealogist (genealogiste successoral), whose task is to establish, upon the request of a notary, the identities of the beneficiaries of the estate of a deceased who has died leaving no known heirs. Once the genealogist has identified the relations of the deceased, he will then be in a position to inform them of their inheritance rights, previously unknown to them, by virtue of what is known as an agreement for the identification of succession beneficiaries (contrat de revelation de succession). In consideration for his services, he will be entitled under this agreement to payment of a percentage of that part of the net estate devolving to the heir in question. The legal classification of such a contract is no simple matter. The courts have decided, with a considerable degree of caution, to place the contract in the category of a sui generis risk contract. The validity of contract is subject to the ordinary common law rules of contract. Until recently, there was an unbroken line of precedent over a period of twenty-three years to the effect that such contract be subject to no particular regulations. However, the french supreme court, by a recent decision dated 30th october 1996, ruled that the genealogist falls into the same category as that of door-to-door salesman and, as such, is subject in the performance of his duties to the restrictions laid down in articles l. 121-23 et seq of the consumer code

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the late nineteenth century, bright tobacco came to dominate the agricultural production of the Virginia-North Carolina Piedmont. as the cultivation of bright tobacco spread, it created a new economy and social order centered on small, family-operated farms. For over a century, tobacco remained at the center of the region's economic and social order, even as numerous economic, technological and cultural forces reshaped the realities of tobacco agriculture. This dissertation explores the effects of these forces on the lives of the region's farm families. While many historian's have described tobacco farm life in terms of inexorable decline, this work takes pragmatic creativity as its theme; instead of viewing farm families as the hapless victims of industrial rapacity and government mendacity, it argues that tobacco farm families have shown themselves to be infinitely creative in responding to the shifting demands of a global tobacco economy. at the same time, this work jettisons the notion that tobacco farming is inherently retrograde, and argues, instead, that tobacco farm families have adapted to new technologies as they became available. In total, this work suggests that the farm families of the Piedmont have had a stronger hand in shaping their world than existing accounts of the transformation of southern agriculture over the last century, and especially since World War II, might suggest.;The dissertation is divided into three sections: land, labor, and life. The first examines the changes in the geography of tobacco brought on by both technological and economic developments and the expansion of federal programs into the countryside. The second section first documents the centrality of family labor to the production of bright tobacco by the beginning of the twentieth century before examining the rise of the use of hired farm labor in recent decades. The third section examines the impact of changing federal policy and economics on farm families lives by exploring how tobacco farm families helped to shape federal tobacco policy and by examining how farm families have used off-farm work to maintain viable farms.

Abstract:

Parkhurst, Michael. "Founder succession in small businesses." Thesis, Pepperdine University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3556877.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this study is twofold. The first is to replicate and expand on previous studies by Rubenson and Gupta (1992, 1996) who introduced a contingency model for the initial succession of an organization. The second purpose is to verify that their model is applicable to organizations that are substantially smaller than the original 54 Fortune 1000 companies that were studied. The researcher used a qualitative research methodology to answer the following research questions. 1. Is the Contingency Model of the Initial Succession proposed by Rubenson and Gupta (1996) transferable to organizations of smaller size and lower revenues? 2. Were the founders of small sized organizations planning for their eventual succession? 3. What other factors came into play beyond those outlined by Rubenson and Gupta (1996) during the succession process?

The qualitative research methodology employed was a grounded theory research design utilizing personal interviews with the first successors of an organization. The researcher used a combination of structured and unstructured questions during the interviews of 15 successor CEOs about the process of succession from the founder to them as the next organizational leader. Participants in this study were chosen by a combination of purposeful sampling and chain referencing methods. All the participants and organizations in this study met the following criteria: (a) the interviewed successor must be the first leader after the founder, (b) the organizations must have been between $5 and $200 million dollars in annual revenue at the time of succession, (c) the organizations must have had 200 employees or less at the time of succession, and (d) the succession must either be in process or have happened within the last 5 years.

The results of this study suggest that founders who maintain a controlling equity position in their organizations are able to set the date and method of their succession with impunity. Only 6 of the 12 sub-factors in the model for the initial succession were confirmed in the sample population of this study. It is the authors conclusion that the proposed model by Rubenson and Gupta (1996) as it is currently constructed had minimal explanatory power in the target population of this study. Additionally, 6 themes were discovered during the interview process: founders are thinking in terms of how to cash out of the business rather than their legacy; founders are not planning for succession until it is thrust upon them by illness, old age, or by their family; founders did whatever they wanted because they were the majority shareholder; successors are not inclined to confront the founder; founders have a high level of self identification with the organization; and founders hung onto the organization because it was their hobby.

Abstract:
Approximately 50% of New York City hospitals lack succession planning as baby boomers transition out of the workforce into retirement. The potential loss of knowledge capital could affect leadership development and corporate stability. Guided by the transformational leadership theory, the purpose of this single site case study was to explore successful strategies executive-level leaders used to facilitate succession planning within their hospital. Three hospital executive-level leaders from a single site location participated in a semistructured face-to-face interview and provided data that assisted the analysis. Four themes emerged from the data analysis through a word cloud format that showed the most commonly used words and phrases from participants' responses to interview questions and review of company succession planning documents. The themes were organizational strategies used to promote executive-level succession planning, encouraging peer-mentorship, knowledge sharing strategies, and talent management. The findings revealed that the participants' organization lacked formal succession planning strategies, but policies were in place that promoted in-house training and development to prepare the next generation of executive-level leaders. The findings of this study can contribute to positive social change by providing a work-related environment that embraces knowledge sharing and leadership development to increase leadership performance, income, and productivity, to ensure a better quality of life for employees and to improve the healthcare of patients and the community served.

Abstract:
Succession planning is the creation of a pool of high potential employees that receive specific training and developmental opportunities with the intention of promotion. There is a definite need to deepen our understanding of what implications there are from a psychological point of view for employees when a major process like succession planning is implemented. Employee engagement is the experienced commitment, which leads to discretionary effort. The purpose of this research is to explore an underlying factor structure for engagement drivers and understand how a major organizational initiative, succession planning, impacts employee engagement. This research was conducted at a petroleum organization in the Southwest United States (N = 2023) and compares engagement based on group membership in a succession planning process (Informed-High Status, Uninformed-High Status, and Uninformed-Low Status). The underlying factor structure of drivers was found to have one factor of engagement. There was a significant difference in the engagement levels based on membership within the succession plan (high status versus low status). However, communicating to an employee their involvement in the succession plan did not differentiate between engagement levels.

Abstract:
Our mandate in this thesis is in essence to tackle and complete two inter-linked, tripartite tasks. Firstly, the sources and traditions of the inaugural throne-vision of the Apocalypse (Rev. 4-5) will be considered; its contents and omissions will be closely examined; and its progressive context will be traced throughout the book with special attention being given to its relationship with the final eschatological vision (Rev. 21-22). Secondly, in parallel and in conjunction with these first three objectives, there is a further threefold consideration which stems from this primary analysis. This secondary concern will deal with the doctrine of God, the Christology of the Lamb, and the eschatological hope of the Christian. These tasks will serve to firmly anchor Revelation in its Jewish traditional background, and John's methods employed in handling these sources will be described. The comparison of the inaugural and the final throne-room visions will be made, and also their resemblance with and difference from other throne-room scenes will be highlighted. Finally John's theological messages, that develop from this, will be detailed.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the manner in which British officials attempted to impose ideas of 'good government' upon the Indian states and the effect of such ideas upon the ruling princes of those states. The work studies the crucial period of transition from traditional to modem rule which occurred for the first generation of westernised princes during the latter decades of the nineteenth century. It is intended to test the hypothesis that, although virtually no aspect of palace life was left untouched by the paramount power, having instigated fundamental changes in princely practice during minority rule the British paid insufficient attention to the political development of their adult royal proteges. In many cases traditional royal practice and authority were deemed expendable in the urgency to instigate efficient and accountable methods of administration in states. The five sections following the introduction examine the life cycle of an Indian prince and the role of British officials at each stage of the cycle. The first section examines the position of the British in determining disputed successions to the Indian princely thrones. The second section deals with the first generation of Indian rulers to be exposed to a western education, either under an English tutor attached to a court or at one of the new princely colleges. The third section looks at marriages of Indian rulers and the extent to which royal women were empowered by British indirect rule. The fourth section tackles the administration of princely states and the relative success of political officers in turning Indian princes from traditional rulers into westernised administrators. The final section looks at British efforts to alter court hierarchy and ritual to conform to strict British bureaucratic guidelines and ideas of accountability. In analysing this critical phase of princely development the thesis makes a major contribution to the understanding of the progression of indirect rule under the Raj.

The efficient operation and succession of family owned businesses plays a critical role in our national economic health. This study was built upon the Family Business Succession Model, which is based on family systems theory. The impact of owner characteristics, enterprise characteristics, business formalizing activities, family influence, access to resources, and external environmental conditions, all on the extensiveness of family business succession preparedness, was assessed. These results were moderated by the generation of the business. With an exploratory and descriptive methodology, primary survey data were obtained from family business owners in Missouri, Illinois, and Kansas. Research results provide family business advisors with important insight for developing recommendations around improving the extensiveness of family business succession preparedness, provide important policy implications, and serve as a basis for additional theory development in family business succession planning.
