Holstein, John. "Les grands saints successeurs de Saint Patrick en Irlande." Rennes 2, 1990. http://www.theses.fr/1990REN20011.
Full textOften characterized by their widespread culture, their prolific literary works as well as their distinct originality, the early medieval Irish have never ceased to intrigue historians of Celtic Christianity. From the arrival of Sant Patrick in the fifth century up to the council of Cashel in the twelfth, Christian Ireland enjoyed the attributes of a highly unique civilization resulting from the union of both Celtic and Judaeo-Christian traditions. Using authentic legal and ecclesiastical documents in the Irish language, the author proposes a methodical investigation into the spiritual reality behind the golden age of Irish saints. This study has a twofold purpose: firstly to explore and analyse the ties between the early medieval Christian community and its mythological past, secondly to reveal the influence of these ties upon the evolution of Irish monasticism. Far from being exhaustive, the main objective of our thesis is to throw light on some of the least considered and often misunderstood aspects of medieval Ireland

Full textGastornithidae are a familly of large ground fossils birds present in the Tertiary (Paleocene- Eocene) from Europe, North America and Asia. Although these birds are known since the beginning of the 19th century, their ecology and the environment where they lived are still poorly known. Therefore, this PhD propose to bring some answers about this two points in order to better understand these birds using a multidisciplinary approach, including functional morphology, isotope geochemistry and paleontological studies. We have determined that this two meter high bird should weigh around 110 to 260 kg, and had a relatively slow locomotion not allowing him to run quickly and for a long time. The diet of the Gastornithidae, discussed since more twenty years, has been studied using an isotopic geochemical approach combine with a morphofunctional study, which permits to conclude to an herbivore diet. In parallel, paleo-environments where lived this bird have also been studied using isotopical analysis applied on fossils bird’s eggshells from the southern France, attributed to Gastornis in this thesis. Thus these large birds lived in an environment relatively dry and hot, with probably an alternance of dry and wet saison in the southern France, which is different than which is known in middle Germany environments where other Gastornis fossils were found, and where vegetation shows an environment wetter. Therefore, that shows that this bird had a good adaptability to different environments, which allowed him to cross the PETM without being particularly affected as shown in the fossil record, on the contrary to numerous mammals

Full textThis study is about the aesthetic links between jazz tenor saxophonist Lester Young and his successors, from 1935 to 1955. By analysing the different processes, ways and figures which determine Lester Young as an archetype, this work attempts to define which effects Young had upon his contemporaries and the various jazz movements. By focusing on the notions of influence and modelling, this thesis is also more generally a reflection about the processes of continuity and return in aesthetic history

Full textSuccession of the family business is an issue that continues to be of great interest to researchers and practitioners because of its perilous nature. Although some studies have considered the succession in family businesses from a knowledge based approach, the existing theoretical deficiencies needs further studies. This research aims to formulate a better understanding of the process of knowledge transfer that takes place within the succession process of family businesses. A better description of this process and its features in time provides family and professional actors involved in the training of successors useful knowledge. Futhermore, the formalization of the steps are likely to guide the action of family businesses that prepare succession. To this end, an empirical investigation of family business successors was undertaken using narrative method. The qualitative data analysis was carried out by complementary techniques : diachronic, thematic and comparative analysis. As a results an integrated process of successor’s development in family businesses, which is carried out in three stages, marked out by influencing factors, transfer methods, actants, critical events and disruptive elements. This dynamic process brings out temporalities and describes, through the use of the theatrical metaphor, a rise in the stage of the successor in order to obtain the role of leader

Full textThis thesis is the first in-depth and comprehensive study on Sattaka, an Indian dramatic genre whose characteristic lies in its language, the Prakrit. The name of this genre goes back to Kohala (2nd to 4th centuries), but it has become known by Rajashekhara’s Karpuramanjari (9th-10th centuries, Kannauj) who gives, for the first time, in the prologue of this play, its definition. According to this, it is a genre related to the Natika, a hybrid genre of classical theater. Prakrit - the generic term for various dialects – has developed in parallel with Sanskrit as a literary language. Its regional varieties have been attributed to various characters in classical theatre in order to indicate their social status. Rajashekhara, breaking with the multilingual rules of classical theater applied, inter alia, to the Natika, composed his Sattaka entirely in Prakrit, in accordance with the rules on phonetic qualities of literary languages in Indian poetics. His choice of language has been the matter of discussion among theoricians and his Karpuramanjari has become the standard for the later authors of Sattakas. In this thesis, after having traced the evolution of this genre, we analyze not only the various theories about the language and the dramatic structure of the Karpuramanjari, but also the plays themselves, in order to elucidate the following question: what is a Sattaka? This work also aims to promote related research works on the evolution of dramatic art during the Middle Ages, on the authors, as well as on their times. This study contains numerous citations of Sattakas, of which we give the first French translation and, for some of them, the very first one

Full textThis dissertation is constituted by three main chapters : the first chapter describes the micro-economic foundations of the gravity model which is used extensively in the two toher chapters. This model links the import demand of the importing country to the exporting country with gnpi and gnpe, which are the gnp of both countries, popi and pope, which are their respective populations, dis, which is the distance between their economic centres, and dummy variables which are supposed to capture the effects of systematic trade barriers or systematic trade preferences, and which will be used to estimate the effects of trade creation (or trade destruction). The second chapter analyses the consequences of the break-up of the austrohungarian empire in the twenties and in the thirties, and the transition from the war to the peace. The third chapter aplies this historical analyse to the case of the russian transition to a market economy and put the stress on both the russian integration to the world economy and the new pattern of specialisation of russia

Full textThe subject matter and chronology indicated in the topic strictly define the object of my interest, and it includes not only the character of Berek Joselewicz, who has been treated by me as a symbol of a much wider phenomenon. This thesis has radically a chronological order. The plot of the narrative is Berek Joselewicz' s work. In Chapter One I am trying to present the shaping of the history and the lines of development of the Jews in Poland over many hundreds of years, which is essential for understanding the history of the Jews in general. Thus I encroach on the ground of a subjective history of historiography. In further part I reflect on the situation of the Jews in the Napoleonic France and its implications in the Duchy of Warsaw, which was a natural orbit of the Empire. Chapter Three is devoted totally to the essence of the issue and the main topic of this thesis, namely Berek Joselewicz. A Polish Jew, a member of the Polish legions, a character contrasting with an established stereotype of a Jew not fit for military service has not attained a biographic elaboration yet. The next chapter is a kind of Berek son's - Józef Berkowicz - biogram, who is in a way his natural inheritor. In Chapter Five I present the characters of not less interesting Polish Jewish heroes, who are presently half if not totally forgotten, and at the same time, in the part closing the chapter, I draw attention to a separate and enticing for a researcher issue, namely the Frankists, who departed from Judaism in favor of Catholicism or protestant confessions. In the annex, which crowns the thesis, I discuss the influence of Berek Joselewicz's legend on present - day generations, especially in the context of a modern perceiving of heroism. The thesis is crowned with an epilogue, in which I offer a slightly different outlook on the role of great Jews fighting for democratic and independence ideals in the Napoleonic period

Full textThe purpose of this research is to analyse the role of the state in development. Development is here defined as a set of dynamics proper to each society, resulting from the interplay of many factors, among these factors we have examened six variables in their relationship to sate action. They are : territory, population, constitutional life, public finance, the education system and the role of the state in the economy. The interplay of these variables has been studied over a relatively long period. Lebanon, 1876-1964 and Syria, 1876-1963, have witnessed three types of state-power : Ottoman rule, the French mandate and the modern independant state. The Lebanese and yrian development experiences rely upon differents patterns, leading to divergent options. Guided by the assumption that the history of a society enrichies our analysis and comprehension of its economic organisation, our multi-disciplinary aproach has led us to pose the ititial question in a different manner : could state-power, rather than being regarded as a primary actor in development, be considered merely as one of its variables ?

Full textThe Graeco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek kingdoms find their origins in the consequences following Alexander the Great’s expeditions in Central Asia and India. Circa 250 BC, the Seleucid satrap seceded from the Seleucid kingdom and became king under the name Diodotus I; the Indo-greek kingdom appears circa 180 BC when the Greeks cross the Hindu Kush. 260 years later, the Indo-Scythians put an end to their presence. The coins struck by the 45 Graeco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek kings are the main data available to historians.Mostly based on unpublished coins sold on the art market, our PhD focuses on six kings, each of them offering a specific problematic: the coinages of Diodotus I and II, that presents the same title and typology; the evolution of the Heracles on the reverse of Euthydemus I’s coins; the links regarding especially the position of the legend on Eucratides I’s and Menander I’s coins; the position of Hippostratos among the last Indo-Greek kings in the West Panjab and the Indo-Scythians.The data provided by the die-studies allows us to dismiss or sustain the many hypotheses concerning the mints and their locations, as well as the meaning of monograms

Full textWe worked around two fundamental bounds: that of S. Freud and that of J. Lacan that we imagined in Moebian link between them. Their discovery and the effects that one has had on the other are summarized in the formula of an artist: one must leave an inheritance to the father.Freud gave the structure of the psychic dynamics that interrogated since Aristotle. The discovery of the unconscious and the psychic causality linked to infantile sexuality produced a revolutionary epistemological break. This discipline of plague continues to be transmitted. The love of transference, the desire of the analyst, lack of being, knowledge and truth, after-the-fact, sublimation and pass are concepts braided together in a Borromean way. Knowledge of the referential in the knowledge of the cure belongs to the two discourses, which also take precedence in transmission: academic and analytical discourse.Through the elaboration of his own traumatic traces, the subject will slip out of his fantasy by extracting his new structural position. It is this knowledge that he will have to transmit, by knotting effect, the lack being accepted and generating the push to know more and more.Psychoanalysis has an agalma object function and causes transfer. The epistemophilic impulse, renouncing its incestuous aim, causing the destitution of the object, may, by transfer, apprehend the vast world. Possibility offered by the paternal metaphor that breaks between the initial Thing and the subject, dismissed from his "paradise."Experience passed through the pass. Circulation of the life impulses which, while encompassing the mortiferous impulse linked to enjoyment, unfold around the Thing giving rise to a knowledge, bordering on itself without losing itself: as sublimation consents to parlêtre. The analytic knowledge is transmitted in a Moebian way entangling the knowledge of the antecedents without the knowledge of the successors who by their desire, modify what predeceased them

Full textMontaigne had a significant and preponderant influence on la rochefoucauld. Even though through other writings he had improved his knowledge of montaigne's work, there is, in the classic moralist's work, a source which is directly derived from the "essais". But particularly in the omitted or not published maxims, we can recognize montaigne's decisive influence. In fact, montaigne's presence in la rochefoucauld's work is permanent and essential. La rochefoucauld appropriated montaigne's favourite rethoric methods, the very style of montaigne. La rochefoucauld's talent was to bring that style to a successfull conclusion ; the specific style of the "maximes" is his own personal property

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: We critically assess the successes and failures of the economic phenomenon that is Black Economic Empowerment as represented by the Ownership Element of the Scorecard. We briefly evaluate the successes and failures of the first wave of BEE deals on the JSE and through the use of contemporary observations of this phenomenon as reported on by the media, we make the key assumption that these media reports are an unbiased account of the phenomenon. We critically assess the current status of BEE and find that progress has been made in terms of black ownership on the JSE, as well as on the legislative front, through the introduction of a comprehensive standardised measurement framework. The progress has in the main been extremely slow and limited. We also find that whilst funding models have improved, the success of BEE deals is still to a large extent dependent on stellar performance of the Stock Exchange and generous dividend policies. Disappointingly we also find that the debate about what constitutes broad-base BEE continues unabated as most deals continue to fail to meet public expectations of broad-base empowerment and equitable equity participation by all BEE deal beneficiaries.

Full textBy focusing on one specific way of the transmission of the personal network within the family enterprise, which managed to transfer the enterprise to at least one member of the next generation, that means to reflect on an emerge phenomenon which researchers on. SME and Entrepreneurship have shown, till this time, little interest. Therefore, o objective is to focus on a potential transmission of the Tunisian family enterprise to its daughter-successor. Within the regard, this PhD thesis aims at providing a good understanding of the transmission of the personal network from the predecessor to the daughter-successor in addition to finding out the funding resources, the favouring factors as well as the obstacles hampering this transmission. As a response to the central question of this thesis, we opted for a multi-site qualitative research by adopting interpretative paradigm. Besides, we have also chosen to conduct interviews as a qualitative approach of data collection. Therefore, the research was carried out by analysing seven case studies of Tunisian family enterprises transmitted fro predecessors to daughter-successors. Concerning the data collection, it was carried out through semi-direction) conversations, while the analysis of content was done by using the software NVivo010. The investigation has shown that despite the importance of the transmission of the personal network from the predecessors to the daughter-successors as well as the importance of the resources gained thanks to these relationship and the profitable resources provided for the successors and the family company as whole, Sociocultural constraints mi exclude the girls from this network. Nevertheless, the analysed qualitative data do emphasize the reasons behind the choice of the Tunisian daughter successor as the core of the investigation. Besides, the predecessors have pointed out that rarely has the gender of tl successor been at stake during the transmission and this reflects the remarkable social status of Tunisian women. Lastly we have realized that there are other reasons which have allowed the Tunisian women to take part in the family enterprise such as the commitment in the enterprise, the close relationships with the predecessor, the skilfulness and the character

Full textA review of the literature relating to family firms reveals a lack of research addressing successor commitment and what happens “after” succession. In this study, I further investigate this phase of retirement and commitment in the parent/child relation and the role of the predecessor. My research reveals the important role played by the predecessor in the continuity of the family firm and how it impacts the successor’s attitude. I propose four successor attitudes following their integration into the family firm. We have identified four categories of attitude: “gradual independence”, “unfettered independence”, “imposed continuity” and “agreed continuity”. This research also highlights the factors which can block or facilitate the course of successor commitment in French family firms

Full textDuring the last years in Latin American there have been researches that identifythe family business inside their scope of study, contributing some data thatconfirm their important presence and role in the economy of several countries(Poza E. (1995); (Khulman, 1996) (Kajihara, 1998); (Davis J. A., 2006).Dominican Republic is not the exception, as explained by Van der Linde & Bello(2001); in the country exists a solid family business network in its first andsecond generations, with some big companies on their third, statement thatproduces evidence to develop an interest and need to prevent the mortality ofsuch companies. The practice that is modeled in the family business to achieve their intergenerationalsurvival is succession, understood as a process that culminates withthe decision making of a new successor leader who will have the company underhis/her command (Chua, Chrisman, & Sharma, 1999); (Chrisman, Chua, &Sharma, 2003).What we usually call “decision making” is a process that is applied to everydaysituations in the management of organizations, which turns complex andintricate in the context of family business. Thereon Basly S., (2005) made acomparison between family and non-family businesses proposing a logic ofdecision making different in each one, and highlighting the dominant dimension, process, speed and assumptions in which the decision is sustained. This studysuggests that family businesses are not governed by the normative model of decision making, assertion that gave us a clue to step into the subject ofrationality and decision making in the family business.Citing Simon (1955) the purpose of all constructions of an approximaterationality is to give materials for the development of a theory of the behavior ofdecision making individuals in the context of an organization. Nonetheless andopposite, we have the paradox that if we assume the type of overall rationality ofthe classical theory, the problems of the inner structure of the company, orwhatever organization it is, disappear almost completely

Full textThe debate on international intervention is a very difficult topic. As a main issue in it, the differences lies on decisions regarding - what, when and who. This essay will address the importance of accurate intervention in disaster affected states. It will identify what types of interventions that is most commonly used and if there is one type of intervention that are the most effective one. It will show if the disaster in it self related to the area in question will determine what kind of intervention that should be used – is the identification of them two the deciding factor or is there one particular intervention model that is better to use? The essay will also question whether intervention might lead to a weakened state sovereignty and if sovereignty has to be protected and be taken in consideration before any intervention can be done. To address this, recent history is analysed with two cases as examples – the Darfur conflict and Cyclone Nargis that struck Burma in 2008. The conflict in Darfur is a man-made disaster which lead to plenty of suffering and many lost lives. Cyclone Nargis was a natural disaster which in it self caused many deaths. In Darfur the discussion regarding what, when and who delayed actions from the international association. It was also disrupted by the government in Khartoum constant refusals of help from the outside world. In Burma, relief could be sent in the initial phase, however, the government was hard to cooperate with, which made it quite impossible for the relief to reach all the affected areas. Putting the empirical part against those theories that has been brought up in this essay, the thesis of it has been answered with the conclusion that whether one type of intervention model is being used or another model, the most important part in any kind of intervention is that the humanitarian assistance along with the provision of needs for survival will reach those who has been affected by a disaster, also, not to create any kind of pressure against the affected state in question, this to prevent further conflicts.

Full textThe job of CEO is rich and complex and the "number one" change, poorly understood, may have an impact on the socio-economic performance, strategy, policy and the organization of the company. Facilitate the arrival of new manager is an important issue for the survival and development of the organization, as well as its organizational socialization remains little studied. The first part explains the conceptual and methodological research, and presents lots of experiments of our assumptions and our tools. We use interviews with executives to define the business leadership and highlight the specifics CEO’s roles and skills. The specific relationship between the leader and its Governance is also studied. Its specific needs of organizational socialization are then demonstrated, particularly in relation to a buyer company and a "classic" employee. In the second part, the concept of organizational socialization is suitable for demanding and unique leader, through the concept of CEO’s Organizational Socialization. This model meets the needs of leader’s socialization, especially during integration, organizational socialization’s milestone. It consists of three types of recoveries: politico-strategic, organizational and managerial. The quality of these recoveries led to the quality of leader’s integration, reclassified strategic integration because of its strategic challenges. An analytical framework is proposed to allow both the new leader to better understand the organization that will lead, but also its own needs through organizational socialization variables and factors that compose it

Among the most used statistical concepts and techniques, seen even in the most cursory of introductory courses, are the confidence interval, binomial distribution, and sample size estimation. This paper investigates a particular case of generating a confidence interval from a binomial experiment in the case where zero successes are expected. Several current methods of generating a binomial proportion confidence interval are examined by means of large-scale simulations and compared in order to determine an ad-hoc method for generating a confidence interval with coverage as close as possible to nominal while minimizing width. This is then used to construct a formula which allows for the estimation of a sample size necessary to obtain a sufficiently narrow confidence interval (with some predetermined probability of success) using the ad-hoc method given a prior estimate of the probability of success for a single trial. With this formula, binomial experiments could potentially be planned more efficiently, allowing researchers to plan only for the amount of precision they deem necessary, rather than trying to work with methods of producing confidence intervals that result in inefficient or, at worst, meaningless bounds.
