Abstract:
Translation is an important communication skill between different languages. In modern society, audiovisualproducts are distributed to worldwide areas as a popular means of mass media. As the globalization of economy and culture is advancing in the new century, audiovisual subtitle translation plays an increasingly important part. Good subtitles can enhance the audience’s experience of appreciating foreign films and make cultural communication more effective. This thesis conducts a brief survey on the strategies for film subtitle translation using the case study of the famous film The Shawshank Redemption. In this paper, based on Skopos theory, the author made a comprehensive analysis of subtitling activities and pointed out that subtitling, as a specialized area of translation, is not only guided by translation studies but also under the constraints of film properties. The Skopos theory of film subtitle translation is to provide, within the constraints of time and space, a well-translated subtitle that can contribute to a good understanding of what is happening on the screen. In short, the end justifies the means. Therefore, during the process of subtitle translation, the subtitler should take all the factors into consideration to identify the translation purpose, and then adopt corresponding translationstrategies. From this perspective, the author takes the Skopos theory as instruction and applies the reduction and addition method to analyze the film subtitle translation. In the age of globalization, foreign films are increasingly entering people’s lives. Watching foreign films is a popular and effective way to understand foreign cultures. However, in China, subtitle translation has not attracted as much academic attention as it deserves and few theories could be appropriately applied to subtitle translation. Therefore, the author hopes that subtitle translation could be paid more attention in terms of crosscultural communication.

Abstract:
The objectives of this study are (1) to classify the translation techniques used between subtitles and dubbing (2) to identify the quality of the accuracy instrument between subtitles and dubbing (3) to compare the quality of the accuracy instrument that is more accurate to use. The source data is a movie that is limited to the translated utterances that have different translations in subtitle and dubbing versions. This study used a qualitative method with the following steps; (1) Classifying the translation techniques of subtitle and dubbing data based on Molina and Albir’s (2002) classification. (2) Tabulating the comparison of translation techniques between subtitles and dubbing. (3) Identifying the translation quality of accuracy based on the theory of Nababan et al., (4) Drawing conclusions. As a result, both subtitle and dubbing mostly used the established equivalent technique. An established equivalent has a good effect on the quality of accuracy obtained. This technique makes it easier for the audience to understand because it prioritizes the prevalence and naturalness so that the message from SL is conveyed properly. The researcher discovered that dubbing translation is more accurate than subtitle translation. Some subtitle translations are still considered less accurate. The researchers concluded that subtitles are appropriate for adolescents or adults, particularly foreign language learners. Language learners can broaden their knowledge of the language by watching films with subtitles. Meanwhile, dubbing is more appropriate for younger audiences because the language used is typically simpler to comprehend and does not contain swear words or inappropriate words.

Abstract:
Movies are carriers of culture and have become an indispensable means of cultural dissemination in today's society. The demand for subtitle translation is also constantly increasing. Subtitle translation in films is constrained by time, space, and culture; therefore, subtitles should be concise and easy to understand. This article analyzed and evaluated the subtitle translation of the Chinese film "Chang 'an" based on three rules of Skopos theory: skopos rules, intratextual coherence and fidelity rule. The translation purpose of the translator is to help the audience have a better viewing experience and accurately convey the information of Chinese subtitles through a concise English translation. When translating Chinese to English subtitles, translators should omit repetitive or plot-irrelevant information, add conjunctions to make the translation smooth and coherent and transform cultural differences.

Abstract:
This study examines how subtitlers in underground subtitle groups in China perform skills and display competence in applying the rules around which annotations are built. I argue that by annotating, the act of creating notes, representing information not linguistically coded in the original US TV programs, subtitlers engage in a performative act in concert. Annotations reveal not only subtitlers’ stances toward the contents being translated, but also their metathinking on these contents. The analysis shows that two contradictory forces provide the impetus for annotations. On the one hand, the desire for objectivity refers to subtitlers’ attempts to represent a professional and organized account of how Chinese subtitles are produced in the process of explicating knowledge. On the other hand, the desire for authenticity is implicit in the subtitlers’ narrative of what they actually experience when translating US TV programs.

Abstract:
The focus of this research is to analyze the subtitle of 2 types of figurative languages; personification and simile, taken from the Anna Karenina movie directed by Joe Wright. This research aims to reveal the types of subtitle strategies applied to translate personification and simile found in the movie. The researcher uses qualitative method and document analysis to explain and describe the data. To analyze personification and simile, the researcher uses the theory of personification and simile proposed by Perrine (1997). Meanwhile, the researcher uses the theory of subtitle strategies proposed by Gottlieb (1992) to analyze the subtitle strategies. The researcher finds that there are 2 data classified as personification and 5 data classified as simile. However, there are 3 of 10 strategies applied to translate personification and simile, those are transfer, decimation and deletion. The result of this research indicates that the most used of the subtitle strategy is transfer. By using transfer strategy, all of the messages in the subtitles are delivered well because there is one on one equivalent in SL and TL.

Abstract:
Cultural exchanges have drawn more and more attention in the literature in recent years, in which film and television subtitle translations play an undeniably important role. The study on the English to Chinese subtitles provides a good perspective to reveal the process of cultural exchange and thus is a promising topic to look into. This study investigates the Chinese subtitle translation of the US TV series Wednesday, which is a horror and fantasy drama released on 2022 by Netflix, and the analysis is based on the framework of Peter Newmarks eight translator methods. The translations have been mainly put through the three translation techniques: addition, omission and shift, and three translation methods are found, namely communicative translation, idiomatic translation and free translation. The analysis reveals the target-audience emphasis tendency of the subtitle translation, which is resulted from the translators habit, the purpose of the subtitle translation, the consideration of the audience, etc.

Abstract:
Abstract How much time do viewers spend reading subtitles and does it depend on the subtitle speed? By posing these questions, in this paper we re-analyse previous data to address this issue while promoting two methodological advancements in eye-tracking audiovisual research: (1) the use of proportional reading time (PRT) as a metric of time spent on subtitle reading and (2) the analysis of data via linear mixed models (LMMs). We tested 19 Polish L1 viewers with advanced English proficiency watching two clips with English soundtrack with Polish subtitles. First, we compared PRT at two different subtitle speeds: 12 characters per second (cps) and 20 cps. Then, we used actual subtitle speed rates to better understand the speed-PRT relationship. The results showed a significantly higher PRT for 20 cps compared to 12 cps, with the models predicting a PRT of 45.24% at 20 cps. We have also found strong evidence of the advantage of LMMs over more commonly used statistical techniques.

Abstract:
Abstract The growing popularity of streaming services has led to innumerable audiovisual material available for the audience. As movies, documentaries, or TV shows are part of the entertainment industry, they aim at reaching viewers worldwide with the help of dubbed and subtitled versions. Our aim is to collect the acronyms used in the transcripts/subtitles of several American political TV shows (24, Designated Survivor, House of Cards, and The West Wing) and analyse their translated versions into Hungarian. However, the strenuous activity of opening each subtitle file one by one and browsing through them to spot and collect the acronyms and initialisms would result in countless mouse clicks. Hence, a specific software (SRT Manager) was designed to speed up the process. As the majority of definitions regarding acronyms and initialisms focus on the fact that they result from the combination of at least two capital letters, once the software gets the input (multiple subtitle files of entire seasons), it provides all the consecutive two- or more capital letter instances (with or without periods) found in the raw data, such as AA or A.A. Further statistical data (the source file of each instance, counting all unique values and numbering occurrences, and adding sample lines from the subtitle) also saves a lot of time and energy, as it can easily be exported to spreadsheet programs for further data analysis.

Abstract:
The research aims to develop an analysis of the cognitive load produced by the use of subtitles in multimedia educational material and its relationship with learning. The methodology used for the development of the research presents a qualitative approach of experimental type, the population selected for experimentation is made up of 100 students of the fifth year of secondary school of Regular Basic Education, of which a sample of 45 students was selected through a simple random sampling, which have been divided into 3 groups of 15 students each, four learning sessions are developed using subtitled multimedia videos and without subtitle and a pre test and post test are applied in order to analyze the cognitive load involved in the use of subtitled videos in the learning sessions, the scale standardized by Pass and Van Merrienboer is used. The results show that the application of subtitles in the videos mean a potential proposal in the teaching-learning processes, due to the improvement in learning since 30% of students improve their performance in relation to the initial Pretest, in addition to promoting inclusion through support for people with hearing disabilities, they also represent a constant support material. In conclusion, the application of subtitles in multimedia material is evaluated by the student and the developer, because not all videos are productive to apply them if there are videos where subtitles of an intralinguistic, bilingual and other nature are required; except for situations where the learning condition warrants it.

Abstract:
Subtitling has constraints that are different from other types of translation. In the pedagogical field, lecturers in subtitling courses must ensure that the students are aware of the constraints to creating a qualified subtitle. The constraints in subtitling frequently cause errors in the subtitles composed by the students. This article discusses the errors found in students’ subtitle products. The researchers took the subtitles of Miacademy Youtube channel videos composed by EFL students studying in one of the state universities in Central Java, Indonesia. Nine videos of Miacademy and their subtitles were analyzed to find the errors in the subtitles. The results revealed that the most frequent error is errors in spatial parameters, specifically on the excessive number of characters per line. The second most dominant error is the errors in the temporal parameter in which most of the students still found problems in obeying the rules of the maximum duration for either a full two-line or a single-line subtitle. Punctuation and letter case errors result from students’ lack of comprehension in mastering the target text language convention. Error in target text editing mainly occurs due to the too-long subtitles, segmentation that is not syntactically acceptable, the decision to omit or retain the source text, and the occurrence of dialect. Further analysis showed that the students need to practice adjusting their translation with the constraints. Likewise, a subtitling brief must be conducted before the lecturer delivers the task to the students by helping the students analyze the possible problems and solutions when composing the subtitles.

Abstract:
The object of study is the series, which were shown on various Ukrainian TV channels: “Merezhivo Doli” (“Inter” TV channel), “Boronene kokhannya” (“Inter” TV channel), “Forget & Zgadai” (“Ukraine” TV channel), “Slid” ( TV channel "Ukraine"), "Bezsmertnik" (TV channel "Ukraine"). Subject of research: lack of subtitling as a way of audiovisual translation, as well as analysis recorded in Ukrainian subtitles, made in the course of working with Russian-language TV shows. Objective: to prove the need for more thorough and competent editing of Ukrainian subtitles, received in text form on the air of the leading domestic TV channels based on specific examples from subtitled films. During the work the following methods were used: observation, descriptive, comparative, analysis and synthesis, as well as generalizations. As a result of the research, it was established that it is the poor quality work of the editor that leads to the fact that Russian-language TV shows are superimposed on low-quality Ukrainian subtitles, and this plays an important role in shaping the general literacy of Ukrainians. The analysis of errors requiring the response of the professional community and recipients has a social and cultural significance. Visual perception of incorrectly written words or unedited sentences and phrases is one of the ways to popularize illiteracy among the population of our country. Today, representatives of the media community, having the necessary arsenal of knowledge and relevant technical equipment, are sometimes disregarding the performance of their professional duties, and this indicates a low level of their skills and special training. Conclusions: working on subtitles for an audiovisual product, the editor or subtitle covers not only all textual material, but also draws attention to other aspects of media art (working with monologues, dialogues, sound effects, images, and the general atmosphere of the frame). Professionalism involves not only creating a high-quality text product for the viewer / reader, but also an appropriate and adequate connection between non-verbal and verbal elements of the original and the translation.

Abstract:
Eco-translatology is a theory of translation put forward by Professor Hu Genshen, which regards translation as a process of “selective adaptation” and “adaptive selection”. The popularity of American TV dramas has aroused a huge demand for subtitle translation, resulting in the rapid growth of subtitle translation by fansub groups and increasing enthusiasm for subtitle translation studies in China. While there is no accordant idea about the understanding of subtitle translation of TV dramas on the internet translated by fansub groups. Based on the theoretical framework of Eco-translatology theory, this study examines the subtitle translation of The Big Bang Theory to analyze translators’ “selection” and “adaptation” on linguistic, cultural, and communicative dimensions. It also pays attention to the inappropriate selection of translation techniques made by the fansub groups. The analysis shows that in the translation process of The Big Bang Theory’s subtitles, the translators adopted various translation techniques which include the applications of buzzwords, Chinese idioms, annotations, and free translation to implement adaptive selection in linguistic, cultural, and communicative dimensions. And the fansub groups make some inappropriate selections as abusing the Chinese dialect in translation. These findings attempt to provide a reference for subtitle translation of American TV dramas available on the internet, as well as evidence of the explanatory power of Eco-translatology theory in subtitle translation studies, in order to supplement a new perspective on subtitle translation and more attention on this developing translation theory.

Abstract:
As an art form, the film plays an important role in spreading national culture and enhancing cultural exchanges. Nowadays, more and more English movies are screened on the big screen in China and have received wide acclaim and lively discussions among audiences in China. In this context, a good translation of English movie subtitles is important for understanding foreign cultures. Based on the application of relevance theory in translation and combining with the characteristics of film subtitles, this paper makes a simple analysis of the subtitle translation of the film Green Book from the aspects of content and style, with a view of removing the barriers and providing a better experience for the target language audience. Besides, this paper believes that when translating, translators also master the basic subtitle translation theory and do more information checks in many aspects when translating to ensure the accuracy of the translation. This is responsible for both the movie and the audience.

Abstract:
The paper examines the role of typographical devices in subtitling practices. As subtitling is significantly determined by its temporal and spatial constraints, the verbal part of a subtitle may be rather condensed and incomplete for perception, which requires additional means to modify meaning-making processes and add up information. The research gives a systematic account of typographical devices and their functions in a subtitled filmic text. The common graphical devices featured are typefaces, colour, punctuation marks, and numeric signs. The performed analysis showed that typographical devices do not only assist in dealing with technical considerations, but they may also serve as means of intersemiotic cohesion linking subtitles with visual or acoustic-or both-components of a film and enabling their functional cooperation. The drawn conclusions allow to state that graphical devices in subtitling possess such functions as they contribute to intersemiotic texture of a subtitled filmic text; help to manoeuvre in spatial and temporal circumstances; enhance reading and comprehending.

Abstract:
Subtitle translation is a field of translation where the subtitles of films or TV series are translated simultaneously. With the development of China's film and television industry and the inflow of outstanding foreign films and TV dramas, subtitle translation for film and television is flourishing.Due to the constraints of space and time, film and television subtitles are generally characterised by the following features: synchronicity, brevity and clarity, accessibility, colloquialism and a high degree of aesthetics. In recent years, the Chinese film and television industry has gradually begun to tell the stories of marginal characters, who are mostly told in dialect. In the vast expanse of China, according to incomplete statistics, there are about seventy dialects, which are officially divided into ten broad categories. Replacing Mandarin with dialects in film and television dramas not only reflects the regional characteristics and makes the audience feel more immersed, but dialect films are also highly aesthetic works of art with a cultural load. In this paper, we will analyse the dialect subtitle translation in the famous 2018 dialect film A COOL FISH from the perspective of the theory of functional equivalence, providing a detailed analysis of which for dialect words, sentences and rhetoric.

Abstract:
In order to investigate the correlation between teachers’ age and anatomy education online in China during the Covid-19 pandemic, we conducted a nationwide survey among the anatomists in three age cohorts (i.e., 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 years old) at the medical schools in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. Of the 359 respondents, there were 31% (n=108) anatomists aged 30-39, 46% (n=160) anatomists aged 40-49, and 23% (n=80) anatomists aged 50-59 years old, who were teaching clinical medicine students online at medical schools in China during the pandemic. The survey questionnaire contains the following items on online anatomy courses during the pandemic: theoretical sessions, practical sessions, active learning, assessment and perception. Based on the Chi-Square statistical analysis, although this study demonstrated that some noticeable differences existed in several items, we found the statistically significant difference was on “the formats of recording the theoretical sessions for asynchronous recorded broadcasting of online course”, among the three age groups, more teachers aged 30-39 chose to capture the PowerPoint presentation screen without the teacher appearing in the recorded video. Overall, this survey revealed that the teachers’ age and their teaching experience offline would not be the decisive factors in implementing anatomy online course effectively during the pandemic.

Abstract:
This paper, taking the subtitle translation of an American comedy The Big Bang Theory as the object of the study, selects the subtitle translations of some typical clips. Based on the integrated framework of multimodal discourse analysis proposed by Professor Zhang Delu, the subtitle translation is analyzed from four levels including culture, context, content, and expression. This paper concludes that multiple modalities interact each other in complementary ways. The interactions between multiple modalities help viewers better understand subtitle translation. Subtitle translation, together with other modalities, helps viewers grasp the plot of the TV series. The author hopes that this study can provide some reference for subtitle translators.

Abstract:
Throughout the history of language teaching, using subtitles has had their particular advocates in teaching English as a second language. This study was conducted to investigate the impacts of Persian subtitled movies on vocabulary knowledge improvement of Iranian intermediate EFL learners. To achieve this goal, out of 35 participants, 20 female learners from a language institute in Isfahan, took part in the study. Their ages were between 12 to 16 years old and they were randomly divided into two homogenous groups (controllable and uncontrollable subtitle groups) based on Oxford Placement Test (OPT). As the pretest of the study, a content specific vocabulary test was administered which consisted of 30 multiple-choice items and was developed by the present researchers. Instructional materials included 10 parts of a movie, titled ‘Tangled’ (produced in 2010). During 10 sessions of treatment, vocabularies were instructed to the participants. Experimental group was instructed watching a controllable subtitled movie (English dialogues with repeated Persian subtitles) while control group was instructed using the same audiovisual materials but without any repetition; watching an uncontrollable subtitled movie (English dialogues with unrepeated Persian subtitles). After treatment, as the posttest, the two groups were administered a test similar to the pretest and under the same conditions. Based on the findings of analysis of covariance on the pretest and posttest vocabulary test scores, the results indicated that the group using controllable Persian subtitles outperformed than the other group. Material designers and instructors can use the findings of this investigation to include movies with Persian subtitles for learners to learn more vocabulary due to the fact that these learners have learnt to appreciate the importance and the value of vocabulary, including its effectiveness in communicative tasks.

Abstract:
English films, TV series, and audiovisual materials are widespread in the Middle East, and they require subtitle translation to convey the intended meaning and engage the viewer. Subtitle translation can be very challenging, and this is especially the case with cultural-specific items. This study will analyze the Arabic subtitle translation of the film Mulan 2020. The study aims to contribute to the literature evaluating subtitle translation in the Arab world. Therefore, the analysis will identify translation violations in light of the Skopos theory at different linguistic levels. To address the issues underpinning the violations in the subtitle translation, the strategies used in translation will also be analyzed. Moreover, using a questionnaire, the study will investigate the audience’s perception of the quality of the subtitle translation. The analysis of the data employed a mixed-method design. The findings show that the rules of Skopos theory were sometimes dismissed at the word and phrase levels in the subtitle translation. At the discourse level, the skopos rule was violated. The findings also reveal that the most used strategy was providing a literal translation. As for the audience perception, the findings reveal that the audience rated the Arabic subtitle translation of Mulan 2020 as fairly good. Overall, the findings suggest that the Skopos theory can be used as a tool to evaluate subtitle translation and help improve the overall translation quality while meeting the audience’s expectations.

Abstract:
The study aims to identify the subtitling strategies used in translating cultural words in the subtitle of Disney Animation Movie: Coco. This descriptive qualitative study employed the data in words, sentences, and logical arguments related to the topic. The data were English combined with Spanish subtitle as the source language and Indonesian subtitles as the target language. The theories used in the analyzing process and describing the analysis were the classification of cultural words by Newmark (1988:94-103) and the subtitling strategies based on Gottlieb's theory (1992:66). There were 100 cultural words found in the subtitles, which were divided into five classifications of cultural words, namely: Ecology (26%), Material Culture (22%), Social Culture (20%), Gesture and Habit (18%) and also Organization (14%). On the other hand, after the researcher grouped the cultural words, then the words were analyzed using the subtitling strategies theory of Gottlieb (1992), in which the subtitling strategies were divided into ten types: Transfer (41%), Imitation (14%), Transcription (14%), Paraphrase (7%), Expansion (7%), Deletion (4%), Condensation (3%), Dislocation (3%), Decimation (2%), and Resignation (2%). The dominant subtitling strategy in translating the cultural words is Transfer with 41 data. Based on the analysis result, within this mainly used Transfer strategy, the translator directly translated the text, word-to-word, so that the translation result in the subtitle becomes complete and accurate with its literal meaning according to the source language.

Abstract:
In recent days, more and more Chinese films and TV series including political-themed TV series are aired internationally and have received extensive attention with the improvement of the quality of Chinese audiovisual works. Such political-themed TV works are produced to reflect social realities and include the bulk of political terminology such as official titles and institution names as well as concepts related to newly-mentioned political terms and slogans, which may be quite unfamiliar to foreign audience. Therefore, audiovisual translation and subtitling play an important role in avoiding misunderstanding. Although a striking number of studies on subtitle translation have been made, these analyses appear to emphasize more on the verbal mode instead of different multimodal contexts. Guided by the theory of multimodal discourse analysis, this paper is aimed to analyze the characteristics of the subtitle translation of China’s politicalthemed TV series in terms of content, conversation and social semiotic levels by building a micro-corpus based on the research materials of the knockout. This paper will discuss not only the translation of interlingual subtitles for dialogues or monologues, but also that of other captions shown on the screen such as voiceover and images of shop signboards, in order to point out the shortcomings and provide reference for further relevant studies.

Abstract:
With the development of cross-cultural communication, subtitle translation has gradually become an important part of translation in various countries. My people, My country is a masterpiece jointly directed by seven directors to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of China in 2019. The film contains four stories and tell the history of China's gradual prosperity and strength since its founding to domestic audiences. It also shows the strength of China to foreign audiences. Skopos theory is the most important theory in functionalist translation theory. It was founded by Vermeer, a German translation theorist, in the 1970s as an external study of translation. It focuses on the choice of various purposes in the process of translation and adds a new research perspective to the multi-disciplinary study of translation. This thesis will discuss and analyze the subtitle translation of My people, My country from the perspective of Skopos theory, and will use the three principles of Skopos Theory and the combination of literal translation, free translation, omission, amplification, conversation to analysis and discussion the subtitles in the film. By studying the translation methods and techniques of this film, more translators can pay more attention to the subtitle translation of China's excellent films, promote the international cultural communication of China's excellent films to a certain extent, and enable foreign viewers to have a better experience and make a better evaluation of China's excellent films.

Abstract:
Based on the principle of truth, the documentary exchanges knowledge and conveys emotions. The documentary Wild China has received strong attention from domestic and foreign audiences since its launch on National Geographic. However, due to the differences between Chinese and Western cultures, most Chinese viewers need subtitle translation to have a better understanding of this documentary. Unlike the subtitle translation of films and TV plays, the content of the documentary has strong professionalism and knowledge. Thus, documentary subtitle translation requirements are also higher than those of films and TV plays. Meanwhile, it is necessary to discuss the subtitle translation of documentaries. Ecological translation was first proposed by Professor Hu Gengshen. In the past ten years, many remarkable research results have been achieved. Taking ecological translation as the theoretical support, this paper chooses the subtitle translation of the documentary Wild China (CCTV) as the research object, and combines the theoretical discussion and the case analysis to focus on the translator’s “adaptation” and “selection” in the linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions, thus verifying the guiding significance of eco-translatology to the subtitle translation of the documentary and supplementing the theoretical research perspective of subtitle translation of the documentary.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper examines how digital users in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia responded to the COVID-19 pandemic via engaging with crisis translation by subtitling COVID-19-related videos. It explores two aspects: (1) how did social media during the pandemic encourage subtitled videos? and (2) how were these clips distributed and received by social media users? It is argued that during the pandemic, social media facilitated the production and circulation of user-generated content by both individuals and institutions to subtitle global news and other genres. To understand the socio-digital dynamics of (fan)subtitling, this article analyses the subtitled clips posted on Twitter by the Saudi Ministry of Health (MoH) and 17 fansubbers during 2020. Subtitling is considered crucial in spreading accurate information to KSA people in time for them to take precautions against the pandemic in 2020. Another relevant factor is the developed technological infrastructure in KSA and the increased digital practice of Saudi Arabians using social media. Following the analysis of 175 clips from the 17 chosen fansubbers and 255 clips from the MoH, it was discovered that social media increased the visibility of COVID-19 clips with subtitles. There was an apparent competition among the fansubbers to accumulate social capital (social media capital), which gave rise to social media fansubbing, a form of non-professional subtitling produced by social media users. The subtitled clips were accompanied by various digital parataxis that supports the analysis and examination of social media fansubbing and crisis transition on Twitter1.

Abstract:
Reception studies in audiovisual translation seek to explore how translation choices affect the audience’s comprehension, emotional engagement, enjoyment, and overall viewing experience of audiovisual materials. This study focuses on the subtitling product and analyzes the acceptability of swear words translated through different stimuli: subtitles with softened, maintained, and intensified swearing, along with standard Netflix subtitles (control). Employing a multi-method approach, the study collected data through a survey, using questionnaires with a Likert scale and interviews, following the user-centered translation model to understand how participants receive and perceive swear words in subtitling. The results indicate that the control group had the highest acceptability of the participants, while the group with softened swear words presented the lowest acceptability rate. The analysis shows that participants across all groups reported that discomfort does not arise from reading the swear word in the subtitle but from perceiving a deliberate change in its offensive load—usually softened. The findings demonstrate that this change can lead to a breach of the contract of illusion in subtitling, as participants are exposed to the original dialogue and the translated subtitle simultaneously. In conclusion, when perceived, the change in the offensive load can redirect the viewer’s focus from the video to the subtitles, negatively affecting the enjoyment of the audiovisual experience.

Abstract:
Translation is important for people who don't know a foreign language. Translators face challenges, but use of techniques like translation shifts can make translations sound more natural and effectively communicate the original meaning to the target audience. This research aims to identify the types of translation shifts used in the Indonesian subtitle of Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant movie and to identify the possible reasons the translators used translation shifts in this movie. The research applied the theory of translation shift proposed by Catford to analyze the data. It used descriptive qualitative methods and the data is from the movie subtitle of Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant. The researcher used the Oxford Dictionary and Big Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI) applications as instruments for analyzing the data, and to ensure the analysis results. The analysis found that the Indonesian subtitles for Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant movie included all types of shifts as proposed by Catford's theory. The shifts identified in the Indonesian subtitles included level shifts and category shifts (including structure shift, unit shift, class shift, and intra-system shift). However, among these shifts, category shifts especially unit shifts, were the most dominant. The translator probably used these translation shifts due to cultural and linguistic differences, time constraints, and creative translation choices.

Abstract:
Abstract Slang is one of the aspects of languages that requires experience and knowledge. Some of the slang is not only for delivering certain meaning but also for identifying or expressing the speaker. Slang also appears in the subtitles of the film. Related to this case, this research aims (1) to describe types of slang that is found in 21 Jump Street movie by Original Film, (2) to describe what subtitle strategies that the subtitler used to translate the slang in 21 Jump Street movie by Original Film, and (3) to describe the relationship between the most widely used subtitling strategies and the type of slang that dominantly appears in 21 Jump Street movie. This research is descriptive qualitative research and the expert is involved in the case to validate the data analysis. There were 145 data collected. 21 data are categorized as "Group- and subject-restriction", 2 data as "Secrecy and Privacy", 67 data as "Informality and Debasement", and 55 data as "Vulgarity and Obscenity." The most common category is the "Informality and Debasement" category. On the second analysis, of these 145 data, the strategy mostly used by the subtitler or translator is the "paraphrase" strategy with a total of 57 data. The type of slang that is mostly found which is "Informality and Debasement" is most dominantly translated using the "paraphrase" strategy. This suggests that slang representing intimacy and informality cannot be translated into the same form and way as the source language. The informality here can mean that the characters in this film see the people around them as close people or even to make strangers closer. The strategy used also influences the meaning contained. Some of them need to be translated not synthetically in order to convey the meaning of the slang.

Abstract:
With the exchange of world cultures, cultural industries between different countries have begun to spread widely. Foreigners discuss Chinese costume dramas enthusiastically, and Chinese people also like to watch foreign sitcoms. As the number of people watching American TV dramas is increasing year by year, how to do subtitle translation well has become the focus of translation scholars. Based on the theory of domestication and foreignization put forward by the famous American translation theorist Lawrence Venuti, this paper analyzes the subtitle translation in the classic American TV series Modern Family, and discusses how to promote the best communication between different cultures in subtitle translation.

Abstract:
Translating a movie subtitle from Indonesian into English should be done carefully because Indonesian and English have some differences which may lead to ineffective communication, such as the changing of structures, the difference of meanings, and also dissimilarity of corresponding cultures. This phenomenon might be a concern since many Indonesian movies have entered international audiences and won some international awards, such as the Gundala movie that is directed by Joko Anwar. This study focused on analyzing the cultural filter implemented in Indonesian – English audio-visual translation of Gundala movie subtitles. The analysis utilizes the cultural filter theory proposed by House (2015). The data analysis focused in this study includes the characters’ utterances in Indonesian and its English subtitle provided in the Gundala movie. The subject is the Indonesian transcription from verbal dialogues produced by the movie characters in Gundala movie and its English subtitles shown on the screen. The object of the study is words, phrases, and sentences produced by the characters in the Gundala movie. Most translations applied cultural filter achieves functional equivalence. Theoretically, the cultural filter can help the translator to achieve functional equivalence. Practically, for the next translation project, it could be a good challenge for the next researcher to explore the translation studies using this theory. Pedagogically, the reader should be more familiar with the cultural differences between Indonesian and English.

Abstract:
A mistake in translating a single word may cause thousands of deaths. An unimaginable fact that mistranslation cost 80.000 lives in Japan in August 1945 proves that translating a text should be taken into consideration and done carefully. Translating a source language (SL) into a target language (TL) is problematic and not as simple as only transposing SL into TL because this activity closely relates to different cultures. Therefore, this study is aimed at analyzing the translation techniques in the English subtitle of the movie “Ketika Cinta Bertasbih 1”. This qualitative study focuses on Molina and Albir’s translation techniques used in the English movie subtitle. The primary data were collected from the dialogs and the English subtitle and selected based on the translation problems. Furthermore, the data were analyzed and interpreted descriptively to identify and explain why and how the translation techniques are used in the English subtitle. This study found that five translation techniques were used to translate the dialogs in bahasa Indonesia (SL) into English subtitle (TL). In the subtitle, this study found the use of adaptation (10 times), transposition (9 times), borrowing (7 times), generalization (3 times) and compensation (once). Those techniques were applied to solve problems in translation, such as cultural differences, in equivalence, untranslatability, and grammatical differences. This study concludes that the techniques proposed by Molina and Albir in 2002 have been a great contribution in the field of translation. The cultural problems which lead to in equivalence and untranslatability, as well as grammatical differences are no longer problematic to translators.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to describe the possibilities and limitations of the corpus approach to the analysis of film subtitles, taking into account their technical, social, and culturalnational features. It offers a review of existing film content corpora accompanied by their critical interpretation, firstly from the perspective of subtitle quality as empirical data for linguistic research, and secondly from the perspective of corpus quality as an environment for quantitative analysis of empirical material. Furthermore, based on established subtitling practices, the author proposes her own viewpoint on subtitles as material for studying film speech, considering technical (line length, screen size adaptation), social (subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing), and cultural-national (subtitling countries vs dubbing countries) aspects of subtitling in different languages and countries. In the course of the work, it was found that the largest number of subtitles available in open repositories are translated equivalents of cinema speech. It is noted that subtitling is preferred in the USA, UK, India, China, and Japan. The features of subtitling in countries such as Serbia, Finland, and Russia are described. The author concludes that these features are important for the quality of linguistic research on the basis of translated movie speech represented by subtitles.
