Semlali, Hicham. "Translating deixis : a subjective experience." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/1844.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes some of the conscious cognitive processes that are inherent in equivalence formation commencing from the transfer of deixis and culminating in the experience of source-to-target and target-to-source indexicality. Its scope is interdisciplinary and the methodology is varied depending on the segment of analysis. It combines a process-oriented analysis with a product based assessment. The stance is also partly subjective because it is based on the personal experience of the translator-researcher of four translating operations. Besides, the structure of the thesis is modular since the main objective is to develop a holistic translation model founded on verbal behaviourism. This approach seeks to put the translator back at the centre of translation theory. All the deictic and indexical aspects of the source-to-target and target-to-source lexico-grammatical, semantico-pragmatic, textual, literary, poetic, discursive, political, ideological and socio-cultural movements are monitored in order to identify the intrinsic cognitive, psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic rules which govern the verbal behaviour of the translator. That is why the focus is on the translator’s parole though without any negligence of the influence of langue. As complex linguistic forms, deictic expressions and indexicalities are closely tracked and examined at different phases of the translating process commencing from the lexico-grammatical segment and moving to higher levels of textuality. The deictic projection of the translator-researcher is evaluated during the appropriation and manipulation of the deictic centre of the implied author. The aim is to unravel how the system-common and systemspecific forms preside over the cycle of equivalence formation starting from the source cue, moving to the intermediate draft versions and culminating in an actual target performance. Taking the standpoint of the anthropological linguist, nearformal correspondence is found to depend on intersystemic coincidence as to the similarities and differences between the content of the source form and the equivalent. Relativities of reading, translating and rewriting are identified as the places where the translator essentially exercises her/his creativity and fulfils her/his subjectivity in terms of competence and intuition. Based on decision theory, the verbal behaviour of the translator is defined in terms of the creation of a source-to-target deictic relationship during an indexical reaction to source cues. As equivalence emerges, it sets an interlinguistic precedence. This latter target form often develops into a socially motivated target icon thanks to the overt and covert intersubjective verbal cooperation between the members of a community of practice. The decision-making operation of the individual translator turns into an act of conscious and, sometimes, subconscious verbal reinforcement of established equivalents. It is also based on the elimination of some viable target options which either collapse from the final target performance during the rewriting phase or remain dormant in bilingual lexicographies. The encounter of the translator with different genres also divulges how bilingual competence, poetic attitude, literary prejudice, political affiliation, ideological conviction and sociocultural assumptions shape the mode of the intersubjective, intertextual, interliterary and intercultural dialogue that is eventually held between two universes of discourse. The target re-contextualisation and by implication the decontextualisation of the source ideological grounding are also explained in terms of the aspiration of the translator to adhere to a set of prevailing target linguistic, literary, poetic and socio-cultural norms. Thus target choice, be it informed or instinctive, grows to be a permanently negotiable verbal process among the active subjectivities of any given community of translators.

Moore, James William. "Voluntary action : subjective experience and brain processes." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2009. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/17279/.

Full text
Abstract:
Humans interact with the world through voluntary, goal-directed action. A phenomenal corollary of this capacity is the sense of agency. This refers to the conscious experience one has of one's own agency; the sense in which actions and their results are caused or controlled by one's ‘Self’. Recent accounts have tended to emphasise either the role of efferent processes within the motor system or the role of general-purpose inferential mechanisms in the sense of agency. In this thesis these different accounts of agency, and their neural substrates, were systematically investigated. It was found that the sense of agency is best understood as a combination of both mechanisms. Several factors selectively influencing the two mechanisms were identified across a series of behavioural experiments in healthy volunteers. Physiological experiments confirmed the efferent contribution to the sense of agency, and identified it with the pre-supplementary motor area. The importance of the sense of agency to normal human functioning can be seen in certain disorders. Abnormal sense of agency profoundly impacts the overall sense of self and also social functioning. This thesis investigated the sense of agency in Schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease. Abnormalities in the sense-of agency were found in both clinical groups, and these abnormalities were explained by known pathophysiology and cognitive impairments in these groups.

Abstract:
This descriptive investigation explores experimentation of the disease in 15 schizophrenic patients from the perspective of the patients themselves through semistructured interviews. The most significan! testimonies were the attribution of the disease to a lack of orientation from the parents, the perception of difficulties in learning and attention abilities in class and the scarce and conflictive interpersonal relationships. Having an occupation, psychological support and stability in their Ji ves were mentioned as aspects that contribute to significan! improvement. Feelings like fear, depression, lack of peace among others are inherent aspects of the disease. In our opinion listening to the patient helps to better understand the experiencing of schizophrenia.

Abstract:

There is growing acceptance in interactive systems design for research approaches built on Phenomenological foundations. These approaches, which include methods such as Ethnomethodology and Participatory Design as well as techniques such as Personas and Cultural Probes, concern themselves with the lived experience of real people. They give insight into subjective experience—what it is like to be a particular person in a particular situation engaged in a particular activity. With greater insight into subjective experience should come greater ability to construct systems which fit into the worlds of users

However, insights into subjective experience are not always effectively sustained throughout systems development. Such findings do not blend smoothly with typical systems-development mechanisms for organizing and analyzing information, which work from an epistemology base more akin to Cognitive Science then Phenomenology. In contrast, narrative techniques, like scenarios and storyboards, tap human beings' basic abilities to use stories to understand the subjective worlds of others. But this primal nature makes narrative untrustworthy; good fiction reads like fact. To be trusted, stories for technology development must be built on a visible scaffolding of empirical data.

This research presents the Contextual Scenario Platform (CSP) design support tool. The CSP helps designers write scenarios about hypothetical people, in hypothetical situations, with thoughts, feelings, perceptions and choices for action based on empirical research. Underlying the CSP is an information framework whose structures reflect Phenomenological models of conscious experience. When encoding information into the CSP, researchers describe situations as collections of small situation-description components. Scenario authors use the same situation-description components when writing scenarios to describe each character's situation. Where these description sets overlap, the empirical finding applies to the hypothetical character.

Two case studies demonstrated the CSP's capabilities for encoding research findings and delineating complex situations with simple components. Designers in a subsequent study created scenarios using two approaches: CSP as auditor, restricting deviation from the empirical while constructing the hypothetical; and CSP as improvisational partner, with empirical data serving as catalysts for creative scenario construction.

Nowell, Zoe. "The subjective experience of personhood in dementia care settings." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.551666.

Full text
Abstract:
The term 'person-centred care' is used widely within mental health and healthcare fields and is particularly prominent ~thin the dementia care sphere. Specifically, it is posited as the preferred approach to care with individuals with dementia but in terms of evaluating the effectiveness of this approach, numerous methodological challenges appear prevalent. A narrative literature review, reported in section one of this thesis, posits that the methodological challenges of person-centred care evaluation research include problems with delineation, the outcomes used and the diversity of person-centred care approaches. The review suggests possible solutions to these methodological challenges and highlights overcoming the present challenges would enable the person-centred care philosophy to be increasingly well-supported, through high-quality research evidence. In exploring the factors involved in the care of people with dementia, the research paper, reported in section two of the current thesis, explored the subjective experience of personhood for those with dementia within dementia care settings. The research employed qualitative methodology, specifically interpretative phenomenological analysis, and the findings highlighted the impact of the hospital ward environment, other members of the groups within this environment, as well as individuals' past roles upon the support of personhood . ./ These findings were discussed in relation to other relevant literature and highlighted the salience of considering the group dynamics and the specifics of dementia care environments, when successfully supporting personhood in dementia. Limitations of the current study and future research in this area were also considered. Reflections upon the different stages of research process were discussed in a critical review, reported in section three of this thesis.

Abstract:
Previous research has shown that the subjective expenence of ease or difficulty evoked by memory retrieval operations can play an important role in shaping a range of people's judgments (e.g., Schwarz, 1998). Rather than basing their outputs on the products of the retrieval process, people use experiential cues to guide response generation. Extending work of this kind, the present research investigated the extent to which experiences associated with prior processing operations (e.g., memory encoding and memory retrieval) may affect people's judgments of elapsed time. In Experiments 1-5, participants committed material to memory under encoding conditions that varied in difficulty. Estimates were then taken of the duration and subjective difficulty of the encoding task. As predicted, the subjective ease or difficulty of prior processing operations was shown to guide people's retrospective duration judgments. Specifically, judgments of elapsed time were shorter under difficult processing conditions. In Experiments 6-8, this prediction was further supported when differential demands were placed on the memory retrieval process. That is, when retrieving information was experienced as difficult rather than easy, people judged that less time had elapsed. In Experiment 9, the same experiential effects emerged when immersive virtual environment technology was used to create a more dynamic task environment. These results are considered in the context of contemporary work on retrospective temporal estimation, with particular emphasis on the role of experiential factors in social cognition .

Abstract:
Transcendental meditation is a popular meditation technique that has been taught worldwide since the 1960s. The aim of this thesis was to explore the subjective experience and process of individuals who practice transcendental meditation in order to illuminate the essential meaning of meditating. Prior research on transcendental meditation, although exhaustive, has neglected the objective aspects of the technique and this thesis aimed to address this paucity, by supplementing the previous research with subjective insight and meaning.

Abstract:

Throughout history, experiencing auditory hallucinations has been described as highly complex and personal. Although early research was conducted in attempts to understand the process and phenomenology of auditory hallucinations, in more recent years the ontological understanding of auditory hallucinations has evolved into inconclusive neural explanations, cognitive models of pathology and psychopharmacological treatments. Despite their importance, these avenues of inquiry attempt to ameliorate auditory hallucinations as a symptom rather than understand the experience for the hearer. In order to re-visit the experiential importance, this qualitative and phenomenological dissertation explored a deeper understanding of the lived experience of auditory hallucinations in the schizophrenic individual using a psychoanalytic (i.e. Lacanian) framework.

Morgan, Brett Bethany Rowan. "The negotiation of midlife : exploring the subjective experience of ageing." Thesis, University of Essex, 2010. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/2394/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the subjective experience of ageing with a particular focus on midlife. I argue that midlife signifies an important phase of transition in the life course which is often characterised by essential changes in personal circumstances. Although many of these changes are anticipated their impact can still come as a surprise, reawakening old psychological threats and anxieties as well as creating new ones. The death of parents, children leaving home, changes at work and an awareness of an ageing body: these changes are usually anticipated at a practical level but can create a sense of emotional instability and insecurity. The three central themes of this thesis include the way the ageing process is experienced physically and how this in turn, effects the individual psychologically, the way personal and family relationships change during this period and the impact this has and finally how people evaluate their lives and compare this evaluation to their imagined sense of what they thought their lives would be like. I highlight how the social experiences and cultural expectations which influence attitudes and pragmatic reactions to ageing are necessarily intertwined with unconscious psychic processes, conflicts and ambivalence. My method involves interviewing twenty-two men and women aged between thirty-nine and fifty-eight years old using a psycho-social approach. This method focuses on how individuals emotionally and psychically deal with age-related changes. I conclude that midlife is a time of complex emotional and psychical conflict which is triggered and challenged through a culmination of natural and anticipated losses. In order for people to negotiate midlife and move forward in a positive and productive way they must first acknowledge and then accept the natural losses and disappointments that life inevitably brings.

Deacon, Charlotte. "Male pornography use in heterosexual relationships : the female's subjective experience." Thesis, University of East London, 2017. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/6341/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is aimed at exploring how female partners experience their male partners’ use of pornography. It is reported that therapists are increasingly being called upon to support female partners presenting with difficulties relating to their male partners’ porn use (Hall, 2015), but that clinicians feel under-prepared to work effectively with these clients due to a lack of training and the limited availability of empirically based literature (Ayres & Haddock, 2009). Consequently, there appears to be a growing need for research in this area that can provide insight and guidance for clinicians. The phenomenological epistemology and relativist ontology that underpin this study place an emphasis on understanding the subjective lived experiences of the participants; a focus which seems congruent with the philosophical underpinnings of counselling psychology. Using a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six female participants. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis through which four master themes were identified: ‘Pushing her limits of acceptance: The ongoing discoveries’; ‘The female partner’s meaning-making’; ‘A lonely experience’; and ‘The layers of loss’. New insights regarding the interplay between the female partners’ meaning-making and their responses highlight the multi-layered and complex experiences of these participants. A number of implications for practice are discussed including the importance of clinicians moving away from a model of pathology to one of promoting well-being and validating female partners’ emotions and experiences regardless of whether a diagnosis (of porn or sexual addiction, for example) is present. The findings may serve to inform individual and group work with both female partners and male users, as well as couple work. Finally, it is hoped that providing insight into the lived experiences of female partners may encourage a more empathetic and understanding response from male porn users and society when female partners seek their support. The limitations of the study are discussed as well as further areas for research.

Abstract:
As the challenge grows in the vehicle industry, tightening the margins on financial and environmental costs of the vehicle development, computer aided engineering becomes more and more attractive. Extensive work is being invested in creating detailed models that can replicate vehicle behaviour accurately and efficiently. The work in this thesis starts with studying objective and subjective evaluations of vehicles as well as their counterparts in vehicle models and a simulator environment. Then, it continues to locate the weaknesses in the models, and investigate the possible improvements. The first part of the thesis focused on performing a literature study concerning the objective metrics and their use in the vehicle industry, as well as the use of simulators. This served as a foundation for the use of objective metrics in the validation of the CarRealTime models. The tools used in the thesis were also introduced. The work continued with the study of previously collected data concerning vehicle evaluation through subjective assessment and objective metrics, with different anti-roll bar configurations, to build trust in the ability of the drivers in evaluating these criteria. Similar data from the CarRealTime models and the simulator were also studied. The aim was to evaluate the simulator driving experience accuracy through the subjective assessment. The weaknesses of the model were identified, and an improved steering model was introduced, replacing the old lookup tables with a Pfeffer model from CarRealTime combined with the steering assist unit in Simulink. An extensive parameter study was performed to understand the effect of selected parameters on the driving experience. Using the same model, the simulator delays were studied in terms of replicating yaw and lateral movements, and how this can affect the driver’s perception of the driving experience. Finally, the results from the parameter study were used to assign the weight parameters in the optimization objective function where the goal was to study the possibility of improving the accuracy of the driving experience as well as counteracting the effects of simulator delays. The Matlab Optimization Toolkit was used in the process. As a conclusion, it was shown that the subjective assessment together with the objective metrics played a crucial role in identifying model and simulator weaknesses. The parameter study showed promising opportunities in solving the aforementioned issues, with the optimization tool and boundaries needing more elaborate work to reach conclusive results.

Abstract:
This thesis combines phenomenological and neuroscientific research to elucidate the effects of psychedelic agents on the human brain, mind and psychological well-being. Psychoactive plants have been used for thousands of years for ceremonial and ritual purposes. Psychedelics are psychoactive substances that affect cognitive processes and alter perception, thoughts, and mood. Illegalization of psychedelics in the 1960s rendered them impossible to study empirically but in the last couple of decades, relaxed legal restrictions regarding research purposes, renewed interest in the effects of psychedelic drugs and new brain imaging techniques have started to reveal the possibilities of these mind-altering substances. Psychedelics mainly affect the serotonin receptor 5-HT2A which in turn affect the functioning of largescale cortical areas by changing cerebral blood flow, alpha oscillations, and functional connectivity. These cortical changes not only induce immediate alterations in perception and cognition but have been shown to have positive effects in therapeutic interventions for depression, anxiety, and addiction, and also positively affect well-being in general. Although the pharmacology and neurobiology of psychedelics are still poorly understood, the potential benefits justify empirical research on psychedelics in humans.

Full text
Abstract:
There have been many attempts to explain the experience of anxiety during different types of performance situations. There are several different views on the brain mechanisms of anxiety. The traditional view has its focus on amygdala but recent research questions this view. In this essay the focus is on how two recent theories, namely the two-system model (LeDoux & Pine, 2016) and the attentional control theory (Eysenck, Derakshan, Santos & Calvo, 2007) has changed the theoretical landscape of the brain mechanisms behind the experience of anxiety. The two-system framework model claim that the subjective experience of anxiety uses the same cortical circuits as executive functions involved in attention and working memory. Whereas the attentional control theory argues, that due to the limited attentional capacity, increasing the subjective experience of anxiety would result in less capacity for executive functions involved in working memory and attention resulting in impaired performance. This review shows that research on the relationship between the subjective experience of anxiety and performance is inconsistent and researchers possess different views on what gives rise to the experience. Some data indicate that the amygdala is crucial for the subjective experience of anxiety while other data suggest that other cortical circuits have a much more prominent role. If the cortical circuits are strongly involved in the subjective experience of anxiety, this would be strong support for the attentional control theory and the two-system framework model.

Abstract:
This paper gives a detailed account of rural-urban migration in South Africa. Using data from the recent National Income and Dynamics Study (NIDS) it defines the determinants and nature of rural-urban migration in South Africa before providing a thorough analysis of changes in a range of economic and social factors that individuals experience when they leave their rural homes and relocate to the country’s urban areas. These factors include income, housing standards, access to utilities, relative deprivation, interpersonal trust, crime and safety, physical health and depression. In particular the paper looks at subjective well-being, defined in terms of individuals self-reported satisfaction with life.

Semino, Semira 1964. "Integrating the experience of institutionalization: Subjective perceptions of nursing home residents." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/291764.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this exploratory study, using grounded theory methodology, was to investigate the impact of institutionalization on the elderly nursing home resident's sense of connectedness with valued attachments. The five female subjects who participated in the study ranged in age from 76 to 92 years. Their lengths of stay at the facility ranged from two months to three years and six months. Data collection and analysis involved interviewing the subjects and comparing and contrasting their responses. This resulted in the identification of a core process labeled Integrating the Experience of Institutionalization. This core process incorporated the subjects' cognitive appraisal of conditions and contingencies related to their past and present lives and involved coping strategies and consequences. The findings of this study were viewed from a developmental perspective in light of the universal need of the elderly individual for integration. This study has implications for nursing research, education and practice.

Abstract:
The phenomenon known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) has been researched across many disciplines including Psychology, Women's Health, Women's Studies and Sociology. It has been researched as a personal issue, a health issue, a psychological issue, and a political issue. Underlying these approaches to the study of PMS are two basic paradigms: the medical model and the social constructionist model. A rather polarized debate has emerged between the two. While both approaches have contributed to research on PMS, neither paradigm has focused particular attention on what PMS is and what it means from the perspective of the women who experience it. In this project, I have examined narrative accounts of PMS as told by eight women who identify themselves as women who report experiencing the phenomenon. Findings suggest that these women view PMS as a complex phenomenon. They seem to view this phenomenon as both a "thing," something that has a bodily nature and bodily symptoms, and also as a label. They also seem to view the label as something that can be beneficial because it gives this "thing" a name that is used and accepted in their social worlds. These findings confirm some aspects of previous research while also yielding some new insights into the lived experience of the phenomenon known as PMS.

Abstract:

The field of User Experience (UX) consists of a wide range of different aspects about the interaction with products or services. User experience differs from the performance-based objective paradigm, focusing on a wider point of view where users needs, desires and fantasies have a role in the users decision-making process. Quantitative analysis and hypothesis and validation approaches have difficulties to deal, in a structured way, with information other than that, which is strictly related to aspects regarding product usage (i.e. emotions and affect, social interaction) and the results obtained are ephemeral and complex to measure.

The aspects of user experience that involve feelings related to inherent needs, desires and fantasies are called subjective experience information. To obtain this kind of information, user experience analyzes the psychological relationship between users and products or services. This thesis describes constructivist psychology and its relevance for user experience research in early stages of product development. First, a general overview of the proposed point of view introduces constructivist psychology to user experience practitioners. Then several exploratory studies illustrate, with examples, how these techniques should be used as subjective user experience information gathering tools:

- The experience landscapes technique use the repertory grid as an alternativist approach to constructivism for gathering information about consumers' response to a certain group of products and extract users' experience requirements.
- The tightening procedure uses laddering techniques (discursive approach to constructivism) to get core information, the values a person holds. In order to increase the level of accuracy, obtaining design relevant information that relates emotional, functional and physical product attributes.
- The sensory metaphor generation method can be considered a rhetorical approach to constructivism and uses products, objects and contexts as carriers of meaning of subjective experiences.
- The visualization of inner needs and desires technique is a narrative approach to constructivism. It uses video presentations to unveil future interactions behaviours that fulfil users' desires and aspirations.

The Subjective Experience Gathering and Inspiring Techniques proposed in this PhD thesis (SEGIT) emerges from the analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of those exploratory studies. It can be considered a set of techniques (explorative and projective techniques) to be used throughout the design process as an inspirational tool to guide the creative process, a generation technique of experience ideas to develop interaction concepts and a model for consumers' future response validation. The information obtained with the SEGIT method is analyzed for inspirational and informational purposes:

- From an inspirational point of view, the set of techniques provide key aspects of the inspiration process in relation to exploratory (detailed and complete ideas) and projective techniques (concepts with high level of abstraction and coherence at the same time). In addition, results show that different aspects like the participants' linguistic abilities and practitioners' guiding skills affect consistency.
- From an informational point of view this set of techniques can be used to obtain subjective experience construing profiles about consumers' product preference. At the same time the results show how variables like participants' cognitive complexity of consumers' response and the cognitive structure of the valuation process affect its reliability.

In conclusion, the approach to interaction design presented by this research and the proposed techniques for inspirational and informational purposes show an optimistic path to explore with the aim to help designers to bring peoples' sensorial experience and technology closer together.

Buchtel, Emma E. "A sense of obligation : culture and the subjective experience of meeting expectations." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/8447.

Abstract:
How do we feel about our obligations? And are there cultural differences in our sense of obligation? In this dissertation, I examine the question of the degree to which we believe we “own” our obligations to help others—if, while being motivated by a sense of duty, we also feel motivated by our own desires and sense of choice. In contrast to Confucian “virtue ethics,” which promote feeling unity between one’s desires and social obligations, the autonomy-seeking philosophies of the post-enlightenment West may have inadvertently encouraged a disassociation of duties from self-endorsement. In four studies, I examine cultural differences in the degree to which we feel congruency between our sense of obligation to help others and our sense of agency about helping. Comparing participants from East Asian and Western European cultural backgrounds, I find that a) East Asians are more likely than Westerners to feel a sense of congruency between agentic and obligated motivations to help others; b) these cultural differences are partially mediated by positive attitudes towards hierarchy and filial values; and c) East Asians are more likely to have positive emotional associations with both obligated and agentic motivations to help others. The studies suggest that East Asians, in comparison to Westerners, are more likely to feel that their obligations are self endorsed and involve a positive emotional experience. Implications for theories of motivation, in particular Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000), are discussed.

Cox, Georgina Rose. "Using Emotional and Autobiographical Material to Study Facial EMG, Subjective Emotional Experience." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.489710.

Abstract:
This thesis examined the effect ofdysphoria on emotional experience and memory processes using standardised emotion-eliciting stiinuli and Autobiographical Memories (AMs). In the first two experiments, facial Electromyographic (EMG) responses were recorded whilst participants viewed emotional stimuli. Facial EMG responses were found to be influenced by the category of stimulus type used, as well as the ratings of emotional content. In addition, facial EMG responses were found to be different for participants who were actively appraising the stimuli, compared to participants who were viewing them passively. In the next study, the effect of dysphoria on facial EMG responses and self-reported emotional experience was investigated. Although there were few differences between dysphoric and non-dysphoric individuals in their facial EMG responses or subjective emotional experience when confronted with emotional stimuli, differences were found in participants' AMs. Although memory for experimentally-presented emotional stimuli did not differ between the two groups, dysphoric individuals displayed mood-congruent memory biases when recalling AMs, verbally describing negative AMs using a higher proportion of negative emotion words, and recalling a low proportion of specific AMs compared with non-dysphoric individuals. To extend the AM finding, a personally relevant emotion-eliciting task was developed and tested on normal participants. This methodology was refined in a final study which investigated the effect of dysphoria on emotional experience and mood-congruent memory recall of AMs. During the recall ofAMs, dysphoric individuals displayed a number of heightened negative emotional responses and to a lesser degree, blunted positive emotional responses, compared with non-dysphoric individuals. However, the two groups did not differ in the amount of specific AMs that they recalled. Taken together, the results from these studies emphasize the degree to which emotional responses in both dysphoric and non-dysphoric participants differ depending on the type of stimuli used, and the exact task being performed.

Rawlings, Gregg. "Investigating the subjective experience of living with epilepsy or psychogenic nonepileptic seizures." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/19266/.

Full text
Abstract:
Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) are paroxysmal events superficially resembling epileptic seizures. Although exploring the subjective experience is key in the management and care of patients with epilepsy or PNES, there is a lack of research into the subjective symptomologies. The primary aim of this thesis was to investigate the phenomenology and clinical implications (diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic) of the lived experience of epilepsy or PNES. Firstly, a systematic synthesis of 21 qualitative studies investigating personal experiences of PNES was conducted. Five key themes emerged revealing experiences of treatment, impact to daily life, and emotional events, as well as differences between the seizure accounts of those with epilepsy. The first empirical study in this thesis explored a series of self-reported measures demonstrating that, subjective experiences could contribute to the diagnostic process as symptoms of panic associated with episodes of transient loss of consciousness could be used to distinguish between PNES and epilepsy or syncope. In study two, a series of multiple-regression analyses revealed that in both epilepsy and PNES, illness perception was a stronger predictor of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) when compared to demographic and condition-related factors. In study three, it was found that writing about experiences of living with a seizure disorder was associated with qualitative and quantitative benefits, including improved HRQoL one-month later. In the final series of studies, it was demonstrated that analysing and comparing individuals’ written accounts of PNES or epilepsy could help to improve our understanding towards some of the problems that individuals experience, as well as highlight clinical implications. In conclusion, research into the subjective experience of seizure disorders is a valuable area of research. More specifically, in-depth investigations are needed into the impact, prevalence and management of specific experiences, which include the voices of individuals that so far have been under-represented.

Abstract:
This study has the purpose of measuring three variables which were hypothesized to be related to the subjective experience of auditory hallucinations in African American, alcohol dependent clients. The sample for this study consisted of thirty—one African American individuals (twenty males and eleven females) who were selected from 150 African Americans based on homogeneity on prescreen admission logs. The logs were obtained from the records of a metropolitan Atlanta crisis intervention service. Each case of the sample was previously diagnosed with the alcohol dependent syndrome. An instrument consisting of sixteen questions was employed and utilized to check off the answers provided by archival records (progress notes). The scores from the list were analyzed to determine the percentages and correlations of all hypotheses. The findings of the study demonstrated that there were statistically significant relationships in regards to the percentages in all three hypothesized variables. The dependent variable, auditory hallucination, did not show statistically significant correlations with the independent variables, namely auditory hallucinations, in alcohol dependent African Americans; marital status in the incidence of alcoholic auditory hallucination and employment status in the occurrence of auditory hallucinations. The pattern of percentages showed that the relationship was in the predicted direction; however, the pattern of correlations were not as anticipated.

Abstract:

Inspired by the heightened representation of reality in early twentieth century art, the costume design for Machinal utilizes techniques found in Cubism, Futurism, and Vorticism to reveal the principle character’s inner experience and communicate her state of mind to the audience. Modifying traditional twenties’ dress with these aesthetic practices provided an opportunity to emphasize aspects of each character in relation to the protagonist, Helen. Additionally, by seamlessly including moments of modernity, the costumes emphasize the relevance of Machinal’s themes to today’s social and political environment. In fusing the aesthetic practices that contextualize Sophie Treadwell’s play with historical fashion, a visual language developed that successfully meets Expressionist goals of communicating interior human reality while also remaining faithful to the twenties’ aesthetic and reinforcing the constraints of the patriarchal machine of society.

Clare, Ysabel. "A study of the structure of subjective experience in Stanislavsky's 'An Actor Prepares'." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2014. http://research.gold.ac.uk/10545/.

Full text
Abstract:
Stanislavsky’s seminal text An Actor Prepares remains popular and highly influential, difficulties of translation and editing notwithstanding. This thesis proposes that the book delivers a systematic encounter with an implicit and orderly model of subjective experience, to be found in the embodied practice articulated in the text, and which has therefore influenced generations of actors. Process orientated logical typing is employed as an analytical methodology in order to reveal the underlying structure of this model. This new approach to Stanislavsky’s core concept of Perezhivanie reveals the extent to which subjective experience informs the text and affects the reader. Systematic analysis of structural aspects of the text demonstrate them to be consistent with the disposition of classical rhetoric. Within this robust framework, patterns of exercise function and distribution indicate an underlying lesson plan and a strategic pedagogy, in the context of which difficulties and successes incrementally potentiate aspects of the model of experience that then provide possibilities among which choices can be made for the purposes of the actor. Stanislavsky’s pedagogy is condensed and represented, and the structure of the underlying model is made explicit. Five governing principles offer a new perspective on the problem of the actor and Stanislavsky’s solutions to it, and show how specific idiosyncracies of individual experience can be used in practice. The System is then revealed in its own terms, in the light of which key concepts and their inter-relationships can clearly be situated. This research sheds new light on the value of An Actor Prepares as a pedagogical tool and a model for the depiction of training on the page. The identification of new levels of specificity in Stanislavsky’s model of experience affords a recontextualisation of the System that will clarify practice, facilitate differentiation between interpretations and permit effective comparison with the work of others as well as making it possible to generate new versions while maintaining the consistency and coherence of Stanislavsky’s model.

Abstract:
The purpose of this review is to identify and summarise qualitative research focusing on the subjective experience of worry. The majority of research to date has focussed on quantitative measures of worry which limit participants’ responses to ratings on pre-defined questionnaire items. In summarising open ended subjective studies about the experience of worry, this review aims to identify phenomenological aspects of the experience of worry that may further advance theory development. Findings are summarised. The following key qualitative themes were identified, a) control over worry, b) value assessments of worry, c) perceived causes of worry and d) cognitive features of worry. However, all qualitative studies identified by the review were lacking in quality, transparency and/or richness. It is recommended that further research be conducted which utilise qualitative methodologies involving rigorous and transparent processes.

Full text
Abstract:
Human movement is a ubiquitous behaviour that is performed to achieve goals by affecting changes in the outside world. The creation of the manmade environment has depended on our ability to plan, execute and monitor movements. This thesis will investigate the subjective experience and underlying brain processes that accompany voluntary and outcome-directed actions. Experiments in this work will make use of an established paradigm to quantify and compare participants’ perceptions of their own actions. Specifically, through the use of a rotating clock, participants report when they perceived action-relevant events to occur, such as the intention to act, the action itself, or the outcome produced by the action. The experience of producing an action, even in the absence of a desired outcome, varies among populations. This thesis will compare the experience of volition in patients with Parkinson’s disease and in healthy controls. It will be seen that manipulation of dopamine availability, either through medication or deep brain stimulation, influences the subjective experience of making an action. Using EEG, it will be seen that differences in the experience of volition are associated with the time-course of activation in brain areas typically related to movement initiation. The sense of agency, a feeling of control of over one’s own actions and their outcomes, will also be investigated by combining the paradigm described above with an established decision-making task. Results from a series of experiments will reveal a sequential effect in which an implicit measure of the sense of agency (intentional binding) is stronger following actions that produce negative outcomes. Finally, this novel effect, which appears to be related to learning processes, will be subjected to meta-analysis. The results obtained in this work will inform further research into volition, motor-control and movement-related pathology.

Horarik, Stefan. "Social Environment and Subjective Experience: Recovery from Alcoholism in Alcoholics Anonymous in Sydney, Australia." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/1117.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis studies the relationship between subjective experience and social environment during recovery from alcoholism in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). As a result of participation in AA meetings, many alcoholics undergo healing transformations involving a sense of acceptance of themselves, others and the world. In early sobriety these experiences often remove an alcoholic’s desire to drink. Outside AA, however, alcoholics frequently experience subjective unravelling – a sense of conflict with themselves, others and the world. For many, this subjective state is associated with actual or potential craving for a drink. Regular participation in AA meetings alleviates these states. This thesis construes the relationship between subjective experience and immediate social environment in terms of ‘experiential stakes of relevance’. This conceptual category can be used to characterise both the structural properties of the social environment and the key attributes of the subjective experience of agents within this environment. Listening to stories at AA meetings results for many alcoholics in a radical change in ‘experiential stakes of relevance’. It is argued that the process of spontaneous re-connection with one’s past experiences during AA meetings is akin to the process of mobilisation of embodied dispositions as theorised by Bourdieu. Transformation in AA takes place in the space of a mere one and a half hours and involves processes of intensification of experience. These are analysed in terms of Bourdieu’s notion of ‘illusio’ and Chion’s notion of ‘rendu’. The healing experiences of acceptance presuppose a social environment free of interpersonal conflict. This thesis argues that the need to structurally eliminate conflict between alcoholics has turned AA into a social field which is sustained by the very healing subjective experiences that it facilitates. In the process, AA has developed structural elements which can best be understood as mechanisms inverting the social logic of competitive fields. The fieldwork entailed a detailed ethnographic study of one particular group of Alcoholics Anonymous in Sydney’s Lower North Shore as well as familiarisation with the more general culture of AA in Sydney. Methods of investigation included participant observations at AA meetings and interviews with a number of sober alcoholics in AA.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to explore managers’ subjective experience of having a coaching approach to management. This has been researched through a Q methodological approach where 18 participants sorted a sample of 36 statements based on their subjective experience. These statements were prepared on the basis of a research design which included how managers perceive their role as both manager and coach, how they relate to a focus on process and product, and how they experience the relational quality to their employees. Four factors were identified through the factor analysis, and represents different views or experiences of coaching management. Factor 1 experiences coaching as a natural part of their role as managers and find that coaching promote results, learning and growth through reciprocal relations. Factor 2 does not seem to recognize coaching as a central role or management style, and emphasizes independence and autonomy as essential for efficiency and success. Factor 3 experiences that coaching management is primarily about being supportive. They also find that the position as manager brings with it a certain authority. Factor 4 has a results oriented focus and considers shared control as central to promote cooperation. These findings are discussed in relation to two models that show different ways of understanding the experience of being a coaching manager. The theoretical frame includes polarity management, situational leadership and transformational change. The results show that coaching management entails contradictory aspects that the factors relate to differently. What is perceived as polarities also varies. The thesis further addresses how the development of a coaching approach to management can be seen as an integration of polarities through transformational learning.

Doubell, Susan. "The subjective experience of being HIV-positive : needs, strengths and coping strategies / Susan Doubell." Thesis, North-West University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/165.

Full text
Abstract:
Adequate assessment of the needs of HIV-positive individuals in the South African context is essential, as it may provide insight concerning limitations in healthcare. This study focuses on the subjective experience of nine HIV-positive individuals, in order (a) to investigate their needs; (b) to gain knowledge and understanding of the strengths available to them; (c) to investigate their coping strategies; and (d) to generate a set of guidelines for the development of a secondary prevention programme to improve their psychological well-being and immune functioning. This article employs a qualitative research method, utilising hermeneutic thematic analysis to gain a greater understanding of the subjective psychological functioning of HIV-positive individuals in the South African multicultural context. To a great extent, this research focuses on the salutogenic/fortigenic perspective, where the focus is on strengths, capacities and emotional/psychological well-being. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine asymptomatic HIV-positive individuals. The needs identified during this study involved the psychological, economical, informational and social categories. The strengths available to HIV-positive individuals in order to make sense or construct meaning in their lives, consisted of four themes, namely internal, social, self-regulative and spiritual strengths. The study further indicates that the psychological strengths utilised by HIV-positive individuals are closely related to the concept of meaningfulness, the mechanisms of coping and psychological resilience. A broad range of coping strategies was identified that participants employed in the management of the disease and in dealing with the negative emotions associated with an HIV-positive diagnosis. These strategies could be conceptually grouped into five categories based on the functions these strategies served, namely self-management coping strategies, cognitive coping strategies, social support coping strategies, religious coping strategies, and avoidance coping strategies. The implications of this study are that the various identified concepts related to needs, strengths and coping strategies, may contribute to the development of a secondary prevention programme, in order to improve HIV-positive individuals' psychological well-being and immune functioning. The concept of "Sense of Coherence" which consists of three elements, namely Comprehensibility, Manageability and Meaningfulness, could be successfully incorporated into an intervention programme in order to achieve a positive redefinition of participants' subjective feeling that life is meaningful, as well as to improve their comprehensibility and manageability of their illness.

The colours present as taking on their own lives, explaining the compelling force behind these works that lead to a pure sensation.

Abstract:
The aim of the research was to explore the subjective experience of patients admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Sub-aims were to explore how these experiences relate to self management, stress and psychological well-being. This study was motivated by research literature that documents a wide variety of negative experiences by patients. A recent psychiatric patient survey conducted in England and Wales (Mind, 2004) found that more than 50% of respondents indicated that hospital surroundings had not helped their recovery. In fact, close to a third of those thought that it had a detrimental effect on their health. Wood and Pistrang (2004) found that psychiatric patients often represent a lower status, marginalized group in society and thus their views are often not taken into account in mainstream research. These results, however, were overwhelmingly based on research conducted in an American or European context. The South African context is unique in the sense of our political, economic and social issues that influence people's perceptions. In relation to other developing and developed nations little research has been done. The research was conducted at a large Psychiatric hospital in Pretoria South Africa. An availability sample of five adults from the hospital was used. A qualitative case study method design was used. Data were obtained through interviews and analysed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (PA) (Smith, 1996; Smith et al., 1997, 1999) Using the IPA method the data was analysed to extract significant or relevant points related to the research topic. These themes were then collated with themes that occur in other accounts and from there tested against the hypothesised outcomes of the investigation. Positive experiences and negative experiences were identified as the main themes; these were each divided into sub themes. The negative experiences related primarily to interaction with hospital staff and -environment, while positive experiences primarily related to effective treatment. Implications of results are that patient experiences and perceptions may be more influential for long term psychological wellbeing than has been acknowledged by care givers within larger mental healthcare facilities. It was concluded that many if not all of the results of previous studies were confirmed. Additionally this study recognised that singular positive experiences may to a greater degree influence patients recovery and maintenance than a combination of negative experiences. Recommendations following from the findings include further studies to assess enhanced interpersonal skills training for nursing staff, and greater community based care facilities.
