Dore, Michael James. "Subject and subjects : conceptions of high school English." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2017. http://e-space.mmu.ac.uk/619497/.

Full text
Abstract:
‘English’ as a high school subject discipline is a deeply contested space. Since its inception in the early twentieth century, the discipline of English has taken on many forms and purposes. From the preservation of grammatical standards to the induction into high culture and creativity, it seems fair to say that few subjects suffer such an identity crisis over their purpose and function as English does. Added to this, the growing intensity in the politicisation of educational practices has led to significant reforms in English curriculum and assessment with a new GCSE course introduced recently. This thesis describes and analyses debates in English teaching before using data gathered from my own school to explore and evaluate how English is being created and what is happening to its participants. To aid my analysis of what English is and its purposes, I have chosen to use the ‘Four Discourses’ theory offered by Jacques Lacan (1901-1981). Far from merely an exotic range of ideas, Lacan’s theory is used here because it offers interesting explorations of subjectivity, language, and insights into the unconscious. Basically, Lacan looks at four ways to see human interactions in a social world: Master (governance over others), University (institutions and how they deliver the Master’s messages), Hysteric (protesting and objecting to the Master), and Analyst (revolutionary ways of rebelling against the Master). The use of Lacan’s theory is not seen as a panacea to educational complexities, but as offering alternative perspectives and as having the capacity to generate new understanding. It would be tedious to merely write diatribic invective and polemic about the surreptitious forces of the master signifiers. Instead, the research looks at the effects upon and within classroom English to create new understanding. Drawing on Lacan, I argue that the ‘subject’ of English and how it makes its participants ‘subjects’ can be seen in interesting ways. I use the Lacanian theory of ‘Four Discourses’ and classroom data to interrogate the difficulties and opportunities presented in navigating the new English curriculum.

Abstract:
This essay examines the subject-object dichotomy between men and women in Toni Morrison’s Jazz and the thesis of the essay is that this dichotomy develops into subject-object harmony. Through Simone de Beauvoir’s theory regarding the subject-object dichotomy and a close reading of the novel, this essay concludes that Jazz shows the possibility of reciprocal relationships built on friendship. In other words, the dichotomy changes into harmony, which makes it possible for both men and women to reach freedom and fulfilment in transcendence.

Abstract:
The process of obtaining the Master of Fine Arts degree led me to probe the aims and methods of my artmaking. What emerged and became uppermost was the issue of form and content or perhaps form versus content. While highly concerned with the formal aspects of art, content (subject matter) would not fade from my intentions or cease to occupy my mind. Through much "soul searching" and inquiries into numerous materials both familiar and new to me, I concluded that my intended content was about my experience of being. I further distilled my conclusion and focused on my ontological experience in terms of the self (subject) as contained by the body (matter). I realized that the successful and specific translation of my intentions into my artistic works had become one of the core issues in my artmaking endeavors. Thus, clarification of subject matter emerged as a core issue from the two year process and focused my attention. The many mediums I worked with helped to increase my sensitivity to the inherent nature, characteristics, and behaviors of materials. The body of work exhibited in the Autzen Gallery m Neuberger Hall from June 5th through the 20th reflects the preliminary residuals of this process.

Vicente, Nicolás Stindt. "Spanish subject pronouns." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Philosophische Fakultät II, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/16919.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation presents and discusses a series of experiments concerning how monolingual adult and child speakers of Chilean Spanish interpret and produce anaphoric subject personal pronouns in discourse. In Spanish, subject pronouns can be either overt or covert. Both forms are used in discourse anaphora. The dissertation investigates what difference in meaning they express. It begins by presenting a common general view, according to which the two kinds of pronouns have complementary anaphoric preferences. This means that, under the presence of two possible antecedents, each kind of pronoun is expected to pick out a different one. Three possible forms of conceiving complementarity are taken into account. Throughout the dissertation, their predictions are tested in different comprehension and production experiments. The results present strong evidence against the idea of complementarity. The dissertation considers then an alternative line of explanation, based on how the sentences of a discourse are related through rhetorical (coherence) relations. According to it, the resolution of pronouns can be seen as a by-product of inferring these relations. The difference between using overt and covert subject pronouns would not obey pre-determined anaphoric preferences (for subject and object antecedents, for instance), but depend on how pronouns contribute to the establishment of coherence in the discourse. Within this frame, better sense can be made of both adults’ and children’s performance in the experiments.

Pidcock, Steve. "Conformity or improvement? : subject benchmarking in some subject areas in some universities." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/7666.

Full text
Abstract:
This study takes as its starting point the recommendation of the National Committee into Higher Education (1997) that the Quality Assurance Agency should establish a system providing benchmark information on standards operating within the qualifications framework in UK higher education. The introduction of subject benchmarking led to fears of increased external intervention in the activities of universities and a more restrictive view of institutional autonomy, accompanied by an undermining of the academic profession, particularly through the perceived threat of the introduction of a national curriculum for higher education. The study situates subject benchmarking in the context of a potentially changing identity for UK higher education, which some observers see as dominated by a growing lack of trust in universities and university professionals on the part of government and articulated through the increasingly prevalent use of performance indicators requiring institutions and individuals to conform to externally imposed norms. The various requirements of the Quality Assurance Agency, including, therefore, subject benchmarks are seen by some as threatening diversity by enforcing conformity. After a consideration of the literature on various aspects of this context, and in particular of the benchmarking principle, the findings of an empirical investigation are presented in which higher education professionals in chemistry, history and quality assurance were asked about their perceptions of subject benchmarking and its impact. The investigation did not bear out the fears articulated at the inception of subject benchmarking. Furthermore, the investigation showed that subject benchmarking was perceived as having none of the characteristics normally associated with a benchmarking system; in particular, it was not perceived as leading to improvement. Finally, observations are offered on the way forward for subject benchmarking, and areas are suggested for further research.

Sookgasem, Prapa. "Postverbal Subject in Thai." University of Arizona Linguistics Circle, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/226571.

Full text
Abstract:
In this paper I provide an analysis of the postverbal subject in Thai. Thai is described as a SVO language by Hawkins (1983) and by Thai grammarians such as Surintramont (1979), Sriphen (1972), Waroamasikkhadit (1972), Kullavanija (1968), Chaiyaratana (1966) and in Thai traditional grammar books. However these analyses seem to be problematic due to the peculiar characteristics of such verbs as mii 'exist', kEEt 'occur', duumlan 'seem' as well as verb-like adjectives, which do not require any element or unit at all in the position right before them in a declarative sentence. To my knowledge these particular verbs have been analyzed simply as taking a non -overt subject or a deleted subject. This phenomenon raises the following questions: Do these verbs and verb-like adjectives require subjects? If so, where are they located? If not, what types of verbs are they? Are some sentences spoken in isolation in Thai are subjectless? In this analysis, I focus on the occurrence of the existential verb mii in a sentence spoken in isolation. I first present the forms of subject and object of intransitive and transitive verbs, including an element or a unit in the post-position of verb mii 'exist'. I argue that the misconstruction is a sentence, not a verb phrase. Then I argue that the element following the verb mii 'exist' is a subject, not a direct object, of this verb. Hence there are two subject types in Thai: preverbal and postverbal, with the subject verb (SV) structure for the former and the verb -subject (VS) for the latter. The paper ends with an application of HPSG theory (Pollard and Sag 1987) to the SV and VS structures in this language. I give the mii 'exist' and kEEt 'occur' constructions as examples for the VS structures. I divide the paper into five sections. Section 1: The Notion 'Subject'; Section 2: Background of the Thai Language: the points relevant to this particular analysis; Section 3: The Analysis; Section 4: Application of HPSG Theory to the SV and VS Structures in Thai; and Section 5: Conclusion.

Jlassi, Mohamed. "The multiple subject construction in Arabic : evidence from subject doubling in Tunisian Arabic." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/1890.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the syntax of set of subject constructions in Tunisian Arabic (TA) comprising a NP and a third person free-standing pronoun, known in the literature of Arabic grammar as an H-Form (Fassi Fehri 1993). The subject NP-H pair has three main realisations, each of which will be shown to have a distinct information structure: an NP-H sequence, where the NP is doubled by the H-form, conveying contrastive topic, an H-NP sequence, where the NP is again doubled by the H-form, expressing a thetic meaning, and an NP-H sequence conveying contrastive/exhaustive focus where the H-form is a nominal copula of a cleft construction. The two subject doubling sequences are analysed as realisations of the same syntactic structure, a multiple subject construction (MSC), but for the values of the syntactic information-structural features [Top(ic)] and [Foc(us)]. The NP-H sequence has the NP in the spec(ifier) of a Top head and the H-form in the spec of the head Fin(ite), specified for Focus. The combination of [+Top] and [+Foc] yields the contrastive topic reading. The H-NP sequence has the H in the spec of Top and the NP in the spec of Fin. The combination of the expletive H in spec of Top and the focused NP in spec of Fin yields the thetic reading. The parameter distinguishing between languages with subject doubling of the TA type and languages without, as English, is about the specification of Fin. In English Fin has an EPP feature attracting any subject, topic or focus or expletive. In TA, Fin is specified for [Foc EPP] only. Topic-marked subjects are attracted by a higher Top head, marked for [Top, EPP], where the latter can be satisfied by an expletive in the absence of a topical subject. It will be shown that Finnish and Icelandic have the same parameter specification as TA, therefore exhibiting a MSC with properties similar to the MSC in TA. The NP-H pair is base-generated as a Small Clause embedded in a so called ‘big DP’, where the NP is the subject and the H-pronoun the predicate. There is only partial agreement between the two terms; in particular there is no person agreement. The MSC is derived by separate movement of the NP and the H-pronoun.

Mae, Christine Carmel. "Subject Matter Knowledge: It Matters!" Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/20166.

Full text
Abstract:
In mathematics education, teacher knowledge matters. However, the amount, type and nature of knowledge required for quality mathematics teaching is remains unclear. This may be due to the ways in which teachers’ subject matter knowledge has been measured. This study explored relationships between three aspects of teacher knowledge: knowledge for designing mathematical tasks; knowledge for solving mathematical problems; and knowledge for making judgements of student learning. Positivism was applied to establish expectations for objective, context-free generalisations throughout the research and used to attach corresponding methodologies and tools. Examining relationships between aspects of teacher knowledge required the selection, testing, development and use of instruments to gain insights into aspects of teacher knowledge before correlations among them could be tested. This necessitated the selection of content that could illuminate conceptual, rather than procedural, knowledge. All data were gathered in a single day from a group of 64 participants teaching 10 to 12 year old students in a large metropolitan schooling system in New South Wales. Relationships between aspects of teacher knowledge were identified and tested using measures of statistical association before correlations among all three aspects were studied simultaneously. Strong correlations were identified between teachers’ understandings of mathematics, the level of challenge in the tasks they designed and their noticing of higher levels of student achievement. Stronger subject matter knowledge, to the extent that teachers could solve more complex, unfamiliar, non-routine problems, was predictive of higher levels of pedagogical knowledge. Australia aspires to increase the proportion of students studying higher levels of mathematics. It is argued that teachers’ understandings of mathematical content are foundational to their development of aspects of pedagogical content knowledge essential for effective teaching. Without increasing the knowledge of the key stakeholders responsible for student learning, changing the syllabus, raising professional standards and testing students may not lead to higher levels of achievement in mathematics.

Jarrah, Marwan Ali Saleem. "Subject extraction in Jordanian Arabic." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/3912.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes a minimalist and cartographic analysis of A-bar movement in Jordanian Arabic (JA) with a particular focus on subject extraction. Adopting the Criterial Freezing approach to A-bar movement and chain formation (Rizzi 2005, 2006, 2014, Rizzi and Shlonsky 2006, 2007), it argues that Spec,SubjP in this Arabic variety is a criterial position and, hence, subject to the effects of the so-called Subject Criterion that prevents movement from this position. In order to facilitate subject extraction from root clauses, the thesis argues that JA resorts to a set of skipping strategies ruled by the postulated D(iscourse)-linking condition of the Subject Criterion which requires Spec,SubjP to be filled with an element with the same D-linking status as the extracted subject wh-word. When the subject wh-word of a root clause is D-linked, Spec,SubjP is filled with the D-linking element ʔilli. The thesis also shows that Spec,SubjP in such cases may alternatively be filled with a deictic temporal/locative adjunct. Deictic temporal adjuncts may fill Spec,SubjP, regardless of the type of the verb used (i.e. transitive, unergative, or unaccusative), whereas deictic locative adjuncts only fill Spec,SubjP in questions with unaccusative verbs. The thesis shows that this discrepancy is due to the effects of the Phase Impenetrability Condition (PIC) (Chomsky 2000, 2001, 2005), which blocks Subj° from probing goals within the complement of v*P. The study provides evidence to the effect that locative adjuncts are adjoined to VP, whereas temporal adjuncts are adjoined to TP, something that makes them immune to the effects of the PIC. On the other hand, when the subject wh-word is not D-linked, Spec,SubjP is filled with an expletive pro. In pursuit of exploring subject extraction from embedded clauses (introduced by the complementizer ʔinn ‘that’), the thesis explores the derivations of the possible word orders used in such clauses. It also provides an account of the bound forms attached to the complementizer ʔinn, arguing that such forms are better treated as inflectional suffixes whose PF form is a consequence of the locality-ruled Agree relation between C° ʔinn and the closest c-commanded visible DP. Contra Chomsky’s (2007) feature inheritance, the present thesis assumes that C° in JA retains its uΦ-features, while T° is separately endowed with a bundle of uΦ-features, given its positive setting of the postulated T°-Φ parameter (i.e. To is endowed with Φ-features). iv Additionally, the thesis shows that factivity is a key factor that determines the possibility of (subject) extraction from embedded contexts or lack thereof. Unlike the clauses embedded under a nonfactive predicate such as jifkkir ‘to believe’, no extraction is possible out of clauses embedded under a factive predicate such as jiħzan ‘to regret’. A full analysis of subject extraction from nonfactive complements is provided, and the relevant observations such as the impossibility of A-bar movement of some elements within the same clause while the subject of the embedded clause is extracted are accounted for, using the feature-based approach to locality (Starke 2001). As for the ban against extraction out of factive complements, the thesis argues that such clauses are DPs, headed by a null determiner. In so doing, the thesis provides substance to the Kiparskian stand that the structural difference between factive and non-factive complements lies in subcategorization of the matrix verb. At the same time, the proposed analysis challenges several recent approaches to factive complements that have argued either for a reduced left periphery for factive complements (e.g. Haegeman 2006, de Cuba 2007) or for the presence of an operator that has the effect to block movement out of these clauses (e.g. Zubizaretta 2001, Starke 2004, Haegeman 2012).

The dissertation turns to the thoughts of Immanuel Kant and Michel Foucault in order to establish a comprehension on the relations that could be traced between the elements of subjectivity and politics. It will try to identify in Kant’s work the terms through which the modern subject was assimilated to a model of autonomy, which would be its only guarantee of fulfillment. He will be seen as a theorist of limits, authorizing the frontiers that separate what is human from what is not, doing it by minimizing politics to a technical instrumentality in favour of a universal ethics of law. By pointing to the impossibilities of this model, as well as to the insufficiency of a politics framed in these terms, the article will move, then, to a reading of Foucault’s oeuvre. Its author will be found negotiating at the frontiers, but, differently from Kant, refusing its stabilization through appeals to a universality. In this sense, his thought will be investigated in order to pin down which keys allow thinking about politics in less totalizing schemes, moving beyond the model of a rational subject identical to itself.

Abstract:
How have the conceptions of the subject in Contemporary Philosophy changed? There are four moments in this development: a) The ethical conception of enlightened subjectivity; b) the different suspicious altitudes of such project in the XIX and XX centuries; e) the follow-up of those suspicious altitudes in what is called the philosophies of malaise in the XX century; d) the new conceptual articulation at the end of the century. Why have these changes and processes occurred? A general interpretive hypothesis belonging to the realm of moral philosophy is suggested: n the realm of practical life we are oriented forwards and the subject has aperformative and projective attitude; this dimension becomes opaque when the interpretation of such practica! life is understood as the result or product (and is understood as moving backwards). In light of that hypothesis, the different ways in which the philosophies of suspicion and malaise are blind to the ethical subject are analized and it is claimed that they are. therefore.blind to the ways in which the Twentieth Century has built, against those philosophical interpretations. moral dimensions -as the rejection of damage and the imputation of responsibilities- to which only the last moment of the last century seems to do justice.

Vigo, Eugenio M. "Copular inversion and non-subject agreement." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/397778.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I propose an explanation for the facts of copular inversion in Spanish, Catalan, and other Romance languages, as well as in German. Copular inversion is a phenomenon found in some languages, in which, at least superficially, the copula may be found agreeing with the postverbal DP instead of the preverbal DP. At first sight it appears that the agreeing postverbal DP is the subject of the sentence, but in this work I provide evidence that this is not the case: the agreeing postverbal DP is, in fact, the complement of the copula. This yields a singular case of non-subject agreement in Spanish, Romance and the rest of copular inversion languages that is not found in the rest of the grammar of these very same languages (e.g. they do not ever show object-agreement in transitive sentences). This requires an explanation that is integrated with the rest of the grammars of the languages. I claim that coreference is the driving force behind the presence of copular inversion: in copular inversion languages, all verbs actually seek agreement with it and all those grammatical functions that are coreferential with the subject. In intransitive and transitive sentences, the only possible candidate is the subject, but in copular sentences the complement is usually coreferential with the subject. The choice of the agreeing function among the possible candidates is decided with respect to a Person-Number Hierarchy: the copula will always agree with the function that has the most marked person and number agreement features with respect to it. This requires challenging the standard view of LFG by which the lexical entries of verbs determine the person and number features of the subject: the solution requires accepting that the person and number features of the verb must be represented in a function-independent “bundle” that is unified with the right grammatical function according to syntactic well-formedness constraints in an OT setting. Additionally to explain the facts of copular inversion languages, the proposed OT-LFG hypothesis predicts why other languages do not have copular inversion. Moreover, the proposed hypothesis can easily be extended to other phenomena of non-subject agreement, e.g. Catalan cleft sentences, Icelandic non-subject agreement in “quirky case” constructions, English locative inversion and agreement phenomena in the Dargwa family of languages.

Full text
Abstract:
This work investigates two distinct constructions which appear to induce a constraint on verbal agreement. The first construction involves inanimate plural subjects and verbs appearing in third person singular/default morphology. Adopting the framework of Distributed Morphology which has recently been used as a key to capturing several agreement restrictions in languages, I propose that the restriction caused by Animacy in Persian resides in post-syntactic morphology through an impoverishment operation. The second construction I study contains Psychological predicates which have not been entirely explored from the point of view of Psychological Constructions in the previous literature. The nominative experiencer does not induce agreement on the verb and the verb appears in third person singular, which provides evidence for separation of agreement and Nominative case assignment. I argue that the lack of verbal agreement in Persian Psychological constructions is only apparent and I provide evidence to show that they do not involve compound verbs. I propose that these constructions have a Tense requirement and involve applied arguments. The experiencer is licensed by a Super High Applicative head which takes a TP (a sentential predication/full proposition) as complement. Furthermore, I propose that the Super High Applicative phrase is a strong phase, a new category to be added to the set of strong phases proposed by Chomsky 1999-2004.

Denic, Stojan. "Communication subject to normed channel uncertainties." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/29288.

Full text
Abstract:
The transmission of information over a communication channel vastly depends on the level of knowledge that a transmitter and a receiver have about the channel and the interference. The transmission of information subject to insufficient knowledge of communication environment is called communication subject to uncertainties. The goal of this thesis is twofold: (1) To introduce new models for uncertain communication channels; (2) To define, compute, and analyze the performance of communication systems subject to introduced uncertainties from an information theoretic point of view. Various communication scenarios of compound single-input single-output and multiple-input multiple-output Gaussian channels are considered. There are three main contributions of the thesis: (1) The modeling of the channel and the noise uncertainties using Hinfinity and L1 normed liner spaces in frequency domain; (2) In the case of single-input single-output channels, the channel uncertainty is modeled as a subset of H infinity space; while the noise uncertainty is modeled either by a subset of Hinfinity space or by a subset of L1 space. Explicit formulas for the channel capacities, called robust capacities, and the optimal transmitted powers in the form of new water-filling formulas, are derived that explicitly depend on the sizes of the uncertainty sets. Moreover, when the noise uncertainty is modeled by a subset of L1 space, the capacity formula has a game theoretical interpretation, where the transmitter tries to maximize the mutual information, while the noise tries to minimize it. It is shown that a saddle point exists and that the optimal PSD of the transmitter is proportional to the optimal PSD of the noise; (3) In the case of multiple input multiple-output channels, two problems are considered. When the channel uncertainty is described by a subset of Hinfinity space, it is found that the transmission over the strongest singular value of the nominal channel frequency response matrix, representing the partial channel knowledge, is optimal for a large uncertainty set. When the noise uncertainty is described by a subset of L1 space, the optimal power spectral density matrix of the noise is proportional to the optimal power spectral density matrix of the transmitted signal.

Abstract:
On 1 November, 1954 an armed insurgency against French rule commenced with a large scale terrorist attack throughout various parts of Algeria. France responded by sending troops from the continent to Algeria and was soon involved in a full out counterinsurgency against the Front Liberé National (FLN), a revolutionary movement organised in a classical communist insurgent pattern. Many of the experiences the French gained conducting counterinsurgency in Algeria have been examined by writers of COIN literature. The conclusions have been incorporated into counterinsurgency doctrines of many countries, and the works of Galula, who experienced the war, is considered basic literature for many counterinsurgency courses. This has been inherited by modern COIN literature. The US FM 3.24 draws from the French experiences and theorists in its main body. This essay examines whether modern counterinsurgency literature derived from French experiences and theories gained, fighting FLN fails to address the question on how the insurgent organisation is structured. It provides a few arguments why we should know this, such as knowing your enemy’s structure will help you understand his vulnerabilities. To archive this and lay a foundation for the argumentation it first compares the Algerian FLN to modern day Taliban to establish if their organisational structures are different or similar.

Harrison, David Christopher James. "Ancestral subject catalogue of chapbook themes." Thesis, University of Surrey, 1996. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/844333/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to offer a substantial bibliographical resource for the study of chapbook literature in the early-modern period. It lists all titles known to have been published in the 'prestructure' (or format) of the chapbook before 1700. Furthermore it details the development of titles and themes from their earliest cultural origins (whether in the form of folk-plays, or printed literature). The inclusion of items associated by theme and subject allows the texts themselves to be shown in the context of other printed productions of the time that relate to them. There is no hard and fast rule here. Some texts are associated by title similarity, some by subject similarity, and some by the use of the same theme. As well as including associated texts for each title, they are often given for groups of titles (ie. gender, medical, cookery, anti-Welsh). These are not comprehensive lists. In each case the basis for the selection will be given. The section numbers will correspond with those of the relevant sections of a forthcoming comprehensive study of the origin and development of chapbook literature to 1700. The basic layout runs from Tales (early romances - popular legends - rogues and jests - apprentice literature) through didactic texts (incl. gender), and fables to conduct texts that use narrative, and then those which don't (complement books). Next come other 'how-to' guides. Then garlands, 'useful' information, riddles and trivia. The work continues with miscellanies, and concludes with texts relating to the production and distribution of cheap print. The general movements within sections or within the whole are from fiction to non-fiction, and from texts with earlier origins to those with later, complementing the prose study. The main titles in each section are ordered alphabetically by keywords and preceded by an index. Each entry is chronologically ordered.

Abstract:
Women and relations to women are a central focus of Genji monogatari. Questions regarding women and their relationship to power need to be explored in order to provide understanding to the Genji. While there have been many feminist accounts of the Genji, most assume notions of patriarchy. This thesis will begin to historicize power and how women are inside its formations. Chapter one will discuss marriage politics and the regency system to show how women function in relation to these formations. Chapter two will historicize sexuality in the Genji. Chapter three will discuss perspective in the e-maki of Genji monogatari. Discussion in these three chapters will show that power relations in the Genji are more complex than notions of male domination over female. Resistance in the text is better understood as resistance against the social formations of mid-Heian court society than resistance against men in general.

Abstract:
Recent research literature on learning to teach has several important strands: the role of subject matter; the extent to which pedagogical knowledge and procedural routines are significant; concepts of learning and teaching; and the role of reflection in learning to teach. The present study adds both to the debate on the links between subject knowledge and pedagogy, and to the case law on learning to teach. A two-year longitudinal comparative case study was carried out on four postgraduate student-teachers. Data sets included: biographical data; details of course content and structure; diaries kept by the students on courses and teaching experiences; tests at entry to the course and exit on subject knowledge in maths, science, music and English; tests on iesson planning (pedagogical content knowledge); questionnaires on beliefs about teaching; lesson observation transcripts and notes on the two teaching practices; prelesson planning questionnaires; post-lesson interviews and general interviews with students and staff; and similar lesson observation and interview data for the first year of teaching. The student-teachers were selected on the basis of a number of criteria, including specialism within the course of maths, music or science; performance in subject knowledge tests; participation in the follow-up study during the first year of teaching; the quantity and quality of diary evidence foreach student; and the initial assessment of lesson quality made by the trained observers. A major part of the research involved the analysis of discourse in lessons for evidence of subject matter knowledge and teaching competences. This part of the analysis was underpinned by theoretical models of teacher knowledge and teaching competence. From these detailed analyses a fine-grained evaluation was made of a sample of each student-teacher's lessons. The case studies were written so as to present data chronologically and from a number of different viewpoints. The analysis of the various data sets and comparison of the sample students has revealed patterns about the relationship of subject knowledge and teaching performance. These have implications for teacher education, especially for the relationship between university-based training and schoolbased work.

The novel As Naus, by António Lobo Antunes, tells us about a country properly fragmented. In this book, the author strengthens this fact which a plot whose structure does not follow any lines - including those of chronological and narrative order. This novel, therefore, potentiates the splinter of Portugal’s own identity. After all, I believe the main theme of As Naus represents the exact point of rupture where the peninsular country thought she could find itself to, just after that, get lost - perhaps irreparably.

Abstract:
Thesis (PhD (Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A methodology to facilitate analysis of dynamic subject-specific patellofemoral function is presented. An enhanced understanding of patellofemoral biomechanics will enable orthopaedic surgeons to identify the mechanisms responsible for imbalances in the joint stabilisers, while also providing objective information on which to base treatment methods. Dynamic patellofemoral function of three volunteers was simulated with a musculoskeletal computational model. The individuals underwent scans from which three-dimensional models of their patellofemoral joints were constructed. Skeletal muscles and soft tissue stabilisers were added to the skeletal models, after which subject-specific motion was simulated. After trochlear engagement, the patellae of the volunteers followed a lateral path, whereas patella tilt was subject-specific. Comparison of the predicted tilt and mediolateral position values at 30 degrees knee flexion to in-vivo MRI values showed a mean accuracy of 62.1 % and 96.9 % respectively. The patellofemoral contact load . quadriceps tendon load ratio varied between 0.7 and 1.3, whereas the mediolateral load component . resultant load ratio ranged between 0 and 0.4. Both parameters. values were similar to previous findings. The medial patellofemoral ligament tension decreased with knee flexion, while the patellar tendon-quadriceps tendon ratio followed a similar trend to that of previous findings (varied between 0.4 and 1.2). After induction of a tubercle osteotomy in the coronal plane, Volunteer One.s patella engaged the trochlear groove at an earlier knee flexion angle, while the patella of Volunteer Two only underwent a small medial displacement. Finite element analyses were employed to investigate the influence of the osteotomy on the patellofemoral pressure distribution. The mean pressure in Volunteer One.s patellofemoral joint was alleviated (17 % smaller) at all angles of flexion with the exception of 60 degrees (12 % greater). Pressure in Volunteer Two.s joint was alleviated at 30 and 45 degrees knee flexion (6 % smaller), while it was elevated (9.1 % greater) at other angles of flexion. Two commercial patellofemoral prostheses were tested on the three Volunteers. joints in the virtual environment. Prosthesis Two delivered patella shift and tilt patterns similar to the baseline values. Patellar tendon tension was slightly greater after resurfacing, with the tensions elevated most with Prosthesis Two. Medial patellofemoral ligament tension was reduced most with Prosthesis Two, while lateral retinaculum tension was increased slightly. Prosthesis Two was the best candidate to reproduce patella kinematics, while the patellofemoral kinetics was largely independent from the type of prosthesis used. The prostheses performed worse for Volunteer Three, supporting the need for the development of patient-specific prostheses. Three validated subject-specific musculoskeletal models facilitated the analysis of the individuals. patellofemoral biomechanics. The technique can potentially be employed by orthopaedic surgeons to visualise the change that an osteotomy or patellofemoral arthroplasty might induce on an individual.s patellofemoral joint. This technique might aid in the development of a tool to assist biomedical engineers in the development of new patellofemoral prostheses. Most importantly, the outcome of surgical intervention may be predicted beforehand, and a treatment procedure may be tailored to optimally fit the patellofemoral biomechanics of that individual.

Abstract:
The nutritional needs of the renal patient vary as the renal function decreases. Little information exists concerning energy requirements for patients on hemodialysis. Renal failure has been called a wasting disease as evidenced by decreased body weight, body fat, arm circumference and serum proteins. This research was designed to help precisely define energy requirements for the hemodialysis subject. Resting energy expenditure (REE) was measured by indirect calorimetry in 17 male hemodialysis subjects whose mean age was 55 years at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Hampton, Va. The Beckman MMC Horizon System, a portable device which permits the determination of heat production from gas exchange, oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production was used. By regression analysis, the measured REE was compared to the basal energy expenditure (BEE): the ideal weight based on the Metropolitan Life Insurance tables, the current weight taken on day of indirect calorimetry, a non-dialysis day, and the post dialysis weight taken immediately after dialysis. A correlation analysis of the dependent variable, IEE, with the current, ideal and post dialysis BBE variable resulted in correlation coefficients of .3783, .0003, and .3946 respectively. None of these correlation coefficients were significantly correlated with the REE. The post dialysis variable had the highest correlation coefficient, and thus the strongest relationship to the REE. While any of the weights studied could be used to determine energy needs for the hemodialysis subject, post dialysis weight may be the most desirable choice.

It examines the relationship between gender and subject specialisation, looking in particular at the reasons for the predominance, at undergraduate level, of men in the physical sciences, and of women in the humanities. It investigates ideas of `masculinity' and `femininity' and how these relate to constructions of `science' and `arts'. The thesis argues that students choose which subject to study on the basis of certain qualities these subjects are seen to hold, and that these qualities have close connections with beliefs about `masculinity' and `femininity'. It examines this through an interview study of male and female students on six higher education courses: two university courses of physics, two university courses of English, a polytechnic course in communications and a polytechnic course in physical science. The interview study demonstrates that the science subjects are perceived by science students as more certain, more useful and more important than the humanities, and emphasise the value of their degree in gaining a well-paid and important job. Female science students, however, experience conflict between being `a good scientist' and being `feminine'. English and communications students emphasise the breadth, uncertainty and individuality of their subjects, and find science restrictive and narrow. They make little link between their degree and their future career. Men, however, feel no conflict between their identity as men and their chosen subject. It is argued that there is a close link between the construction of masculinity and the construction of physical science, but that English and communications are more ambivalent: in some senses `masculine', in some `feminine'. Men are advantaged in these subjects because of their greater visibility and assertiveness. The thesis concludes that the division between `science' and `arts' reinforces ideas of masculinity and femininity, and argues that female `failure' in education is in part the result of higher education's inability to transcend that division.
