Abstract:
The thesis is made up by four studies, on the comprehensive theme of integrated and subject-specific science education in Swedish compulsory school. A literature study on the matter is followed by an expert survey, then a case study and ending with two analyses of students' science results from PISA 2003 and PISA 2006. The first two studies explore similarities and differences between integrated and subject-specific science education, i.e. Science education and science taught as Biology, Chemsitry and Physics respectively. The two following analyses of PISA 2003 and PISA 2006 data put forward the question whether there are differences in results of students' science literacy scores due to different types of science education. The expert survey compares theories of integration to the Swedish science education context. Also some difference in intention, in the school case study, some slight differences in the way teachers plan the science education  are shown, mainly with respect to how teachers involve students in their planning. The statistical analysis of integrated and subject-specific science education comparing students' science results from PISA 2003 shows no difference between students or between schools. The analysis of PISA 2006, however, shows small differences between girls' results with integrated and subject-specific science education both in total scores and in the three scientific literacy competencies. No differences in boys' results are shown on different science education.

Strand, Tomas.

Massey, Ingrid Ahrens. "Faculty and Student Perceptions of Reading and Language Arts Preparation and Preparedness for the State Subject Area Test." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3177.

Full text
Abstract:
Since changes to the reading/language arts State Subject Area Test (SSAT) in late 2010, elementary education teacher candidates at a teacher training college in the Southern United States have experienced declining scores resulting in test failure and delaying student teaching and graduation. The purpose of this case study was to identify factors that students and faculty perceived as most beneficial in preparing students to pass the SSAT. Constructivism served as the conceptual framework for this study addressing the effects of collaboration, hands-on learning, and application of knowledge. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit 6 elementary education students who had taken the SSAT and 4 full-time reading and language arts faculty members who participated in semistructured interviews. Analysis of coded data indicated themes of preference for experiential learning, intensive strategy instruction, and a review of tested content. Based on study findings, a 3-day professional development training was created to provide students a review of tested subject matter through embedded strategy instruction and opportunities for hands-on application of learning. Implications for positive social change include preparing students to pass the SSAT in fewer attempts so they can graduate on schedule and begin their careers. Local communities may benefit from the addition of highly qualified teachers ready to enter elementary classrooms across the state during a critical teacher shortage.

Raymond, Alberta. "Southeastern High School Teachers' Perceptions and Experiences in Preparing Students for Required Standardized Testing." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2684.

Full text
Abstract:
The reauthorized No Child Left Behind requirement for annual state-mandated student examinations led some teachers to believe that they must teach solely for test preparation. This case study explored teachers' perceptions of preparing students for the state-mandated tests at an economically disadvantaged high school in the southeastern United States. Ten teachers were interviewed to understand their perceptions of 'teaching to the test,' feelings of pressure and stress, motivation to teach, and recommendations for integration of creative teaching strategies. The researcher collected demographic data, such as gender, grades taught, and subjects taught, and manually calculated frequencies and percentages. With an electronic software program for qualitative data management, the researcher analyzed the data manually by iterative review of the interview transcripts for codes and themes. Teachers' perceptions of standardized test preparation were both positive and negative. Preparation fostered discipline and content mastery but inhibited teacher creativity and stressed students. Teachers experienced pressure and stress with unhealthy physical reactions, lack of competence, and responsibility to students. Teachers' motivations were both positive and negative. Some experienced increased self-efficacy, and other experienced decreased motivation; commitment to students; and inadequate institutional support. Teachers recommended incorporation of creative teaching strategies and professional development (PD) programs. Findings led to a PD for addressing the problems and creative strategies (e.g., reciprocal teaching, graphic organizers). Findings may help teachers reduce negative feelings toward standardized test preparation and use innovative strategies for students' more effective learning.

Abstract:

This is a descriptive ethnographical study with the purpose of examining teachers’ and students’ experiences of oral examination at a State Pedagogical University in western Russia. The study also focused on finding the characteristics of oral examination and the contextual factors influencing its implementation. The research was done using participatory observations and interviews. The results show that interviewees experience oral assessment in general as positive. Their descriptions are summarised and analysed using a number of key concepts, of which flexibility, subjectivity, individualisation, and fairness are the most important. The study also shows that contextual factors such as culture, traditions, and organisational framework have large impact on how the examination is done. The conclusion is that oral examination has both gins and losses, since the teacher’s active participation creates possibilities for individualisation and deep probing of the students’ knowledge, but is also a source of bias because of its subjectivity.

Abstract:
Introduction Lateral elbow pain is a common disorder and affects 1-3 % of the population each year. Beside the typical characterization with pain in restricted dorsal and radial deviation of the wrist and local tenderness of the lateral epicondyle, a neurodynamic dysfunction of the radial nerve can co-exist with the tendon dysfunction.  Purpose The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of individualized neurodynamic treatment in combination with neurodynamic self-treatment in patient with persistent lateral elbow pain with a neurodynamic dysfunction of the radial nerve on grip strength, pain, disability, and function.  Method A single subject experimental design with A-B-A design was conducted. Seven participants with lateral elbow pain and a neurodynamic dysfunction of the radial nerve were recruited for the study. Five participants completed the study which consisted of individualized neurodynamic treatment directed to the neurodynamic dysfunction in combination with home exercises which included self-mobilization with sliders and/or tensioners in combination of the strengthening- and stretching exercises. The treatment was evaluated by pain-free and maximal grip strength, the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) and Patient-rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation (PRTEE) questionnaires and range of motion of the upper limb neurodynamic test (ULNT) biased n. radialis.   Results The result of this SSED shows that neurodynamic treatment with manual mobilization and self-mobilization improves the ROM of the ULNT n. radialis in all five participants. Neurodynamic treatment also improved outcomes of DASH and PRTEE in 3 of the 5 participants.  Conclusion Neurodynamic treatment including manual mobilization and self-mobilization in combination with individual strength exercises tends to improve self-rated pain and disability, function and mechanosenstivity of the radial nerve in patients with persistent lateral elbow pain.

Abstract:
Medical imaging technologies offer the benefits of faster and accurate diagnosis. When the medical imaging combined with the digitization, they offer the advantage of permanent storage and fast transmission to any geographical location. However, there is a need for efficient compression algorithms that alleviate the taxing burden of both large storage space and transmission bandwidth requirements. The Perceptually Lossless Medical Image Coder is a new image compression technique. It provides a solution to challenge of delivering clinically critical information in the shortest time possible. It embeds the visual pruning into the JPEG 2000 coding framework to achieve the optimal compression without losing the visual integrity of medical images. However, the performance of the PLMIC under certain medical image operation is still unknown. In this thesis, we investigate the performance of the PLMIC by applying linear, quadratic and cubic standard and centered B-spline interpolation filters. In order to evaluate the visual performance, a subjective assessment consisting of 30 medical images and 6 image processing experts was conducted. The perceptually lossless medical image coder was compared to the state-of-the-art JPEG-LS compliant LOCO and NLOCO image coders. The results have shown overall, there were no perceivable differences of statistical significance when the medical images were enlarged by a factor of 2. The findings of the thesis may help the researchers to further improve the coder. Additionally, it may also notify the radiologists the performance of the PLMIC coder to help them with correct diagnosis.

Abstract:
The hearing and understanding problems of the people with high frequency hearing loss are covered within the scope of this thesis. For overcoming these problems, two main studies, developing hearing loss simulation (HLS) and applying new frequency lowering methods (FLMs) were carried out. HLS was developed with the suprathreshold effects and new FLMs were applied with different combinations of the FLMs. For evaluating the studies, modified rhyme test (MRT) and speech intelligibility index (SII) were used as subjective and objective measures, respectively. Before both of the studies, offline studies were carried out for specifying the significant parameters and values for using in MRT. For the HLS study, twelve hearing impaired subjects listened to unprocessed sounds and thirty six normal hearing subjects listened to simulated sounds. In the evaluation of the HLS, both measures gave similar and consistent results for both unprocessed and simulated sounds. In FLMs study, hearing impaired subjects were simulated and normal hearing subjects listened to frequency lowered sounds with the specified methods, parameters and values. All FLMs were compared with the standard method of hearing aids (amplification) for five different noisy environments. FLMs satisfied 83% success of higher speech intelligibility improvement than amplification in all cases. As a conclusion, the necessity of using subject-specific FLMs was shown to achieve higher intelligibility than with amplification only. Accordingly, a methodology for selection of the values of parameters for different noisy environments and for different audiograms was developed.

Abstract:
This study examines the psychic constitution of alcoholic women and seeks to broaden the comprehension of their psychic functioning in order to assist those who work with this population. The study uses the Rorschach test and interview analysis as assessing instruments. The participants are 15 alcohol-dependent women who have been referred to us by their own psychiatrists. In search of common elements, we have found significant alterations in the intellectual mode of adaptation to external reality, characterized by stereotypies and submission to environmental impositions that probably derive from a need of approval. These characteristics also demonstrate indifference towards the other, as if the patients did not feel any affection for them and did not register the affection received from them. This fact displays undifferentiation. The generic and superficial adaptation mode, speech dispersion, affective turbulence, non-fixation and non-retention of experiences are aspects that hinder the creation and inscription of significant marks that go beyond the alcoholic individual. Even though the phantasmic universe is present, it is not integrated into the psychic dynamics and the subjects present a tendency of denying their own fantasies. The excessive use of alcohol seems to favor and maintain the subject\'s alienation as the negation mechanism is reinforced and the fantasies are psychically displaced. As for sexuality, we think of alcohol as a metonymy for man (: alcohol/bottle/penis/man/father) with a flowing meaning that is supported by fantasies that carry the signifier devastation in their core. As a conclusion, we state that alcohol dependence may culminate in hysteria, obsessive neurosis and psychosis; however, a deeper study on the function of alcohol use in each of the psychic structures is still necessary.

Abstract:
IMT genomfördes under åtta veckor. Dyspnén skattades med Borg CR-10-skala och University of California San Diego Shortness of Breath Questionnaire (UCSD SOBQ).
Introduction: In idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), dyspnoea is the predominant symptom that affects walking distance. In other patient categories, walking distance has been increased and dyspnoea has been reduced after inspiratory muscle training (IMT). Only two studies on IMT for people with IPF have been found and none of these studies have IMT as the sole study intervention. Purpose: The purpose was to investigate whether IMT increases respiratory muscle strength (MIP), if walking distance and dyspnoea alter after practice, and if there is a relation between MIP and walking distance, MIP and dyspnoea and walking distance and dyspnoea. Method: Single-subject experimental design was used. Six people with IPF participated. IMT was carried out in eight weeks. During baseline, intervention and about six weeks after the intervention, MIP was measured with Micro RPM® and walking distance with a six-minute walk test. Dyspnoea was estimated with Borg CR 10-scale and the University of California, San Diego Shortness of Breath Questionnaire (UCSD SOBQ). Results: The results varied among the study participants. For four participants, the MIP increased. Five study participants had a clinically relevant increase in walking distance. Four participants had a clinically relevant reduction in dyspnoea on measuring with Borg CR 10 at rest or UCSD SOBQ. The correlation between MIP and walking distance was significant for two study participants with rs 0.88 and 0.99, respectively. Conclusion: IMT can increase MIP and provide clinically relevant improvements in walking distance and dyspnoea. All study participants do not benefit from exercise. Further studies are needed to determine which ones have the advantage of IMT and the amount of exercise needed to achieve improvement.

Diban, Bassel. "Life Estimation of HVDC Cables Subjected to Qualification Test Conditions." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2019. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/18955/.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of the Master Thesis is estimating the life of HVDC XLPE-insulated cables subjected to the Qualification Tests conditions according to CIGRÉ Technical Brochure 496 and for different values of the coefficients (a) and (b). During the Electrical Type Test (TT), a series of load cycles (LC) with DC voltage UT=1.85 U0 (rated voltage) are applied in three stages, i.e.: • 12 cycles lasting 24 hours each with a negative polarity of the applied voltage (12 days). • 12 cycles lasting 24 hours each with a positive polarity of the applied voltage (12 days). • 3 cycles lasting 48 hours each with a positive polarity of the applied voltage (6 days). according to CIGRÉ technical brochure 496, Load Cycles are of two types: 1. A 24-hour Load Cycle consists of 8 hours heating (with steady conductor temperature equal to the rated one during at least the last 2 hours), followed by 16 hours of natural cooling. 2. A 48-hour Load Cycle consists of 24 hours heating (with steady conductor temperature equal to the rated one during at least the last 18 hours), followed by 24 hours of natural cooling. Results: -The phenomenon called “Field Inversion” takes place only in the case of high values of “a” and “b” coefficients where the outer part of the insulation is stressed more than the inner part. -In case of low “a” and “b” that the lower those values are, the more the inner part of the insulation is stressed. -The life of the cable under the Type Test condition (around 90 days) is three times longer than the Type Test duration (30 days), considering the worst-case which corresponds to low values of “a” and “b”. -The loss of life in one 48-hour Load Cycle (LC) is twice that in two 24-hour LC (equivalent to the same duration of 48 hours). -For the same values of a and b, the inversion of the life curve over the insulation thickness in the Pre-Qualification Test is greater than that in the Type Test because of the High Load period in PQ test.

Abstract

Examining essay in history C of Henrik Ragnarsson, vt -09. Tutors: Ann-Kristin Högman

”History canon. A written interview study about teachers attitude to a  history canon”

The intention with the essay is to examine how teachers relates to the question about an uniform canon and compare their opinions with the Swedish researchers'. The survey is based on eight written interviews with teachers in history in Värmland.

My conclusion is that six of ten researchers is positive to a canon if it helps to enhance the status of the subject, brings to a conclusion with the informal canon that already exists and works as an elucidation of the curriculum. And that seven of eight teachers is positive to a cannon in history if the following premises apply:

  • That a canon will not take up more than approximately: 25% of the subject.
  • That a canon must be able to be pupil centred.
  • That a canon will function as common basics to emanate from.
  • That a canon concentrates on overall skills.
  • And that the teachers are aloud to be a part of  then decisions of the content in canon.

All in all we can see that a majority of the teachers and the researchers are positively suspended to a canon if they are aloud to be a part of the formulation of it.

Keywords: Histotory canon, written interview, national standardized test in history, history as a compulsory subject

Sammandrag

Examensarbete i historia C av Henrik Ragnarsson, vt -09. Handledare: Ann-Kristin Högman

”Historiekanon.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to document the construction of subject matter content through the description of daily lesson activities that occurred in two eighth grade Civics classes. Utilizing daily observations, field notes, audio-tapes, and interviews to collect data, this study focuses on how students and teachers work collaboratively during activities in order to construct a "text" of the subject matter of lessons. The metaphor of classroom as text was used as a framework for this study. Participants in this study were two teachers and their students in one section each of an American Civics course. Both classes were observed daily by a non-participant observer over the course of one semester. Field notes and audio-tapes were recorded by the observer during each lesson. Copies of materials and resources used during lesson activities were also collected. Interviews with teachers took place during the summer following the observation semester. Data were analyzed using an adapted version of Doyle's Activity Analysis Procedures (1984). In this procedure data from all data sources except interviews are combined in order to describe individual lesson activities. The focus of analysis was one unit that was taught as part of the curriculum in both classrooms. Results of analysis indicate that teachers and students in the two classrooms constructed different texts of the subject matter of the unit. Though there seemed to be similarities in general structure, the unit as it was enacted in each classroom, reflected differences in what aspects of content were represented, how content was constructed, how teachers and students interacted within the contexts of activities, and how activities were internally structured.

Abstract:
Categorizing books and literature of any genre and subject area is a vital task for publishers which seek to distribute their books to the appropriate audiences. It is common that different countries use different subject categorization schemes, which makes international book trading more difficult due to the need to categorize books from scratch once they reach another country. A solution to this problem has been proposed in the form of an international standard called Thema, which encompasses thousands of hierarchical subject categories. However, because this scheme is quite recent, many books published before its creation are yet to be assigned subject categories. It also is often the case that even recent books are not categorized. In this work, methods for automatic categorization of books are investigated, based on multinomial Naive Bayes and Facebook's classifier fastText. The results show some amount of promise for both classifiers, but overall, due to data imbalance and a very long training time that made it difficult to use more data, it is not possible to determine with certainty which classifier actually is best.

Hilts, Wade William. "Emulating Balance Control Observed in Human Test Subjects with a Neural Network." PDXScholar, 2018. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4499.

Full text
Abstract:
Human balance control is a complex feedback system that must be adaptable and robust in an infinitely varying external environment. It is probable that there are many concurrent control loops occurring in the central nervous system that achieve stability for a variety of postural perturbations. Though many engineering models of human balance control have been tested, no models of how these controllers might operate within the nervous system have yet been developed. We have focused on building a model of a proprioceptive feedback loop with simulated neurons. The proprioceptive referenced portion of human balance control has been successfully modeled by a PD controller with a time delay and output torque positive feedback. For this model, angular position is measured at the ankle and corrective torque is applied about the joint to maintain a vertical orientation. In this paper, we construct a neural network that performs addition, subtraction, multiplication, differentiation and signal filtering to demonstrate that a simulated biological neural system based off of the engineering control model is capable of matching human test subject dynamics.

Abstract:
This study investigates the washback effects on teaching practices caused by the national test in the course Swedish 1 which was introduced in upper secondary school in 2011. The test consists of three parts; oral presentation, writing proficiency and reading comprehension. The focus of the study is on the washback effects of the reading comprehension test which is an entirely new type of test for upper secondary school in Sweden. The study draws on qualitative data from interviews with 18 teachers of Swedish in upper secondary school. The interviews were carried out in four focus groups and also in a series of four interviews with five individual teachers. The theoretical framework consists of Stephen Ball’s theory of policy enactment. In addition, theory about reading comprehension and an adaptation of Ivanič’s concept discourses of writing transferred into the context of reading are used in order to analyse data. The findings indicate that even though there seems to be substantial washback from the oral and the writing tests, the reading comprehension test does not seem to have affected reading instruction to any large extent. One reason seems to be that reading instruction already covers the contents of the test to a great extent. The teachers in the study also perceive that there is a discrepancy in the alignment between the results of the test and the assessment critera of the course, making it problematic to communicate the results to pupils and to relate them to the final grade. As the result of the test is not interpreted as being useful to the teachers they admit to paying little attention to the reading comprehension test. Furthermore, the teachers tend not to consider the test as an important indicator of pupils’ reading competence as they seem to oppose the notion that interpreting fiction is something that can be measured and objectively assessed according to preset standards. When talking about reading instruction the teachers seem to value most the type of reading which deals with basic values, gives new perspectives on what it means to be human and which encourages pupils to want to read more literature, a type of reading the test cannot offer. Findings also indicate that even though the teachers have adequate knowledge about the teaching of reading comprehension they seem to lack a metalanguage to talk about the different components it is made up of which affects how they perceive the national reading comprehension test.

Abstract:

Fernandez, Mercedes 1963. "EEG measures of subjects with idiopathic chemical sensitivity: A test of the sensitization model." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/282608.

Full text
Abstract:
This study tested the sensitization model proposed by Bell, Miller & Schwartz (1992) to study multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS). The sensitization models indicates that a traumatic event which elicits a strong response can sensitize limbic and/or mesolimbic pathways and future less intense trauma or stimuli, in the same or different modality, can elicit an amplified response. Three groups of subjects were tested: (1) women who reported chemical sensitivity; (2) sexually abused women without chemical sensitivity; and (3) healthy woman without chemical sensitivity nor sexual abuse history. All subjects were exposed to odorant and nonodorant control stimuli once a week for three weeks. Electroencephalographic (EEG) activity was recorded while subjects sniffed the odorant and control stimuli. Based on the sensitization model, it was hypothesized that subjects who reported chemical sensitivity as well as subjects who reported a history of sexual abuse would show increases in the amplitude spectrum in the alpha frequency band across experimental sessions during exposure to odorant stimuli. Additionally, it was hypothesized that the healthy control subjects would show little or no changes over time. As predicted, the chemically sensitive and the sexually abused groups showed sensitization across experimental sessions. Additionally, the healthy control subjects showed habituation across experimental sessions. These findings indicate that individuals with chemical sensitivity show evidence of sensitization and that sensitization is not specific to MCS.

Abstract:
Background: Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is a determinant of an individual’s ability to handle oxygen during maximal exercise. To measure VO2max expensive equipment and expertise personnel are required. To make the process of measuring VO2max easier, several submaximal and maximal tests have been created in which an estimation of VO2max could be made. Cooper’s 12-minute run (12MR) was created in 1968 and was tested on 115 military men with a mean age of 22 years. Since then the 12MR test has been re- tested and validated towards maximal treadmill tests on several occasions. When an age of 30 years is reached, VO2max starts to decline with 9-10 percent per decade but can be halted by different forms of exercise. With exercise of moderate to high intensity the decline can be halted by almost 50 percent. Objective: To investigate the reliability of estimated VO2max in a test retest scenario of Cooper ́s 12MR on a mixed healthy population between the ages of 28-60. Method: Nine women and five men, healthy subjects with a mean age of 43 ± 8 participated in the present study. A test retest of Cooper ́s 12MR took place with a minimum of seven days between tests. The subjects had to run as many laps as possible on the track during a 12-minute period. Finished laps were then counted and the fraction of the last lap was measured with a measuring wheel and then added to the total distance. To estimate the subjects’ VO2max Cooper ́s table was used. Results: The single measure Intraclass correlation (ICC) that was found, between the estimated VO2max made from the initial test to the retest on Cooper ́s 12MR, was 0.979. ICC showed a small error variance correlation between the tests and was close to the optimal correlation of 1.0. Conclusion: A standardized protocol for performing Cooper ́s 12MR showed good repeatability for estimating VO2max in two separate tests for a mixed population between 28 to 60 years of age.

de, la Motte Sarah J. "3-D Analysis of a Functional Reach Test in Subjects With Functional Ankle Instability." VCU Scholars Compass, 2008. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/1629.

Full text
Abstract:
CONTEXT: 3-D kinematics and kinetics of the lower extremity during the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) have not been examined in FAI subjects. Additionally, the effects of Kinesio® tape use in subjects with functional ankle instability (FAI) during functional tasks is uninvestigated. OBJECTIVE: To determine if lower extremity kinematics and kinetics differed in FAI subjects using Kinesio® tape during maximal SEBT reach. SUBJECTS: Twenty subjects with FAI (Age=24.2±3.8yrs; Ht=169±11.6cm; Wt=69±12.4kg) and twenty uninjured subjects (Age=25.7±5.6yrs; Ht=170.1.4±8.8cm; Wt=69.9±10.5kg) with no history of ankle sprain. FAI was operationally defined as repeated episodes of ankle “giving way” and/or ankle “rolling over”, regardless of neuromuscular deficits or pathologic laxity. All FAI subjects scored < 26 on the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool. METHODS: SEBT reaches included the anteromedial, medial, and posteromedial directions. FAI subjects used their unstable side as the stance leg, while control subjects were side-matched to the FAI group. The stance leg ankle was taped using 1) Kinesio® tape and the Kinesio taping method (Kinesio method); 2) white linen tape with the Kinesio method; 3) Kinesio® tape along the distal peroneals tendons (lateral method); 4) white tape with the lateral method. Three-dimensional lower extremity kinematics, kinetics, and force plate data were collected during SEBT performance. A repeated measures ANOVA analyzed the effects of group, tape, tape method, and reach direction on all variables (α=0.05). Tukey HSD post-hoc analyses were performed for significant interactions. RESULTS: Normalized reach distance was not significantly different between groups in any direction (F2,76=1.16, P=.32). A significant four-way interaction for tape, method, direction, and group (F2,72=3.874, P=.03) was found. Post-hoc testing showed FAI subjects exhibited hip abduction while control subjects used hip adduction (Condition 1: .65±8.23° vs. -2.14±8.51°; Condition 2: 1.29±7.71° vs. -1.75±8.29°; Condition 3: 1.08±8.39° vs. -1.88±18.33°; Condition 4: 2.13±7.62° vs. -1.54±6.61°). Additionally, a significant difference in FAI subjects’ hip abduction angles between the white tape/Kinesio method (.65±8.23°) and Kinesio tape/Kinesio method (1.08±8.39°) was found. Conclusions: These results indicate that FAI subjects’ movement strategies differ from those of uninjured subjects. Furthermore, the use of Kinesio® tape at a distal joint can alter proximal joint movement in subjects with FAI.

Abstract:
Learning in school is in many respects done through language. However, it has been shown that the language of school assignments is seldom explicitly discussed in school. Writing tasks are furthermore assigned without clear guidelines for how certain lexical choices make one text more powerful than another. The present study is a contribution to a linguistic and pedagogical discussion of student writing. More specifically the focus is on the use of evaluative language in texts written by students in the school subject of Swedish in grades 5, 8 and 11. The major investigations of the study have been accommodated within the theoretical framework of Appraisal. An overview is given of the language resources in the student texts for constructing emotion, judging behavior in ethical terms and valuing objects aesthetically. Another question addressed is that of how attitudinal meaning is intensified, thus creating greater or lesser degrees of positivity or negativity associated with the feelings. The results show that manifestations of attitude are found in practically all texts in the study. However, variations are noted in relation to different genres, age, proficiency level, language background and gender. A contribution of the study in relation to the theoretical framework upon which it draws is an extension of the system of Attitude as well as an identification of different patterns in the use of attitudinal resources. These patterns are furthermore discussed in relation to how students talk about their own written production in terms of text movability. Results indicate that students with a high degree of text movability also use attitudinal resources to a large extent. It is argued that applying the linguistic tool of Appraisal can facilitate a discussion of how to make one aspect of the hidden curriculum more visible, namely, how to write with an Attitude.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the test-retest reliability of digitally recorded word recognition materials. Word recognition testing is included in a complete audiological evaluation to measure an individual's ability to discriminate what they hear. A phonetically balanced list of 50 monosyllabic words was presented to each participant at four different sensation levels (SL) using the American Speech Language Hearing Association recommended protocol for word recognition score testing. Each participant took a 10 minute break before the test was readministered. Participants included 40 subjects with varying levels of hearing loss, from normal hearing to severe hearing loss. The test and retest scores of all participants were analyzed to estimate the test-retest reliability to be .65 at 10 dB SL, .87 at 20 dB SL, .88 at 30 dB SL, and .95 at 40 dB SL. It was concluded that the word lists have strong test-retest reliability at 20, 30, and 40 dB SL and that the reliability increases as the presentation level increases.

Wagg, Heather. "Subject and text in Réjean Ducharme’s L’Avalée des avalés and Le Nez qui voque." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/25990.

Full text
Abstract:
Although Réjean Ducharme is a major literary figure in Quebec, he is virtually unknown to English Canada. His novels L'Avalée des avalés and Le Nez qui vogue are important in the evolving literary tradition of Quebec because they foreground the functioning of language, but this tendency also explains why translation of Ducharme is a difficult undertaking. Thus, as of 1985, Le Nez qui vogue has not been published in English. The purpose of this study is to examine L'Avalée des avalés and Le Nez qui vogue from two complementary points of view: traditional and metafictional. Both of these novels diverge substantially from the norms of verisimilitude while presenting a wealth of psychological motifs. The psychological coherence of the first-person represented in these texts points out the individual subject's dependence vis-à-vis social and cultural values, the relativity of the concept "subject," and its status as a social construct or "text" in its own right. In other words, the psychological representation of subject evokes the latter's status as fictional or constructed, within the text, as character, and outside of the text, as writer/reader. At the same time, the divergence of the novels from the norms of verisimilitude constitutes an interpretation and critique of those norms and of literary and expository discourse in general. L'Avalée and Le Nez are metafictions, or novels about fiction. The image of subject in L'Avalée des avalés repeats the myth of schizoid deterioration presented in Laing's The Divided Self, while the subject in Le Nez qui vogue repeats Freud's obsessive self. In Part I, I discuss these rapprochements in the light of a traditional interpretation of character. The description of the subject assumes the first-person narrator to be the origin of the discourse which becomes the novel. In Parts II and III of my discussion I reverse this point of view. In Part II, I show how the language and structure of L'Avalée reveal the text as constituting a parody of the psychological novel, by using Linda Hutcheon's concept of parody as repetition with a difference. Semantic incongruity defines the parameters of the text, pointing to meaning as a complex or non-univocal structure, just as the schizoid subject caricatures the non-schizoid subject by never being at one with itself. The subject emerges as an image of the text as realized in the act of reading. Part III of my discussion addresses the relations of subject and text in Le Nez qui vogue, which conforms to verisimilitude more than L'Avalée, by representing its own inscription as the narrator's practise of keeping a journal. Passages of nonsense and word play in the journal gradually give way to a narrative account of the subject's cure and separation from his alter ego. The discourse which produces the cure also performs a critique of discourse itself as tautological, a critique outlined in Patrick Imbert's discussions of Ducharme. This discourse can be displaced only by a récit which is ultimately included within the closed conceptual universe critiqued. The narrative of the alter ego's endangerment and death displaces the narrative of the subject's cure. Instead of reaffirming his cure, the narrator's neglect of textual practise in favour of narrative constitutes his entrapment within a closed conceptual universe; and specifically within the ethos of castration which interprets the other as a degraded version of the same, the unknown as the already known. The possibility of this reversal of interpretation in Le Nez qui vogue accords a high-profile role to the reader by making overt the latter's responsibility in imposing closure on a text. The reduplicating of the narrator's conscious discourse by the unconscious discourse representing castration makes explicit his status as result rather than origin of discourse. The pursuit of psychological subject in L'Avalée des avalés and in Le Nez qui vogue leads one to appreciate subject as text, that is, as an interpreted plurality. It also leads one to recognize text as subject, that is, as realized by the reading process.

Chung, EunKyung. "A Framework of Automatic Subject Term Assignment: An Indexing Conception-Based Approach." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2006. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc5473/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of dissertation is to examine whether the understandings of subject indexing processes conducted by human indexers have a positive impact on the effectiveness of automatic subject term assignment through text categorization (TC). More specifically, human indexers' subject indexing approaches or conceptions in conjunction with semantic sources were explored in the context of a typical scientific journal article data set. Based on the premise that subject indexing approaches or conceptions with semantic sources are important for automatic subject term assignment through TC, this study proposed an indexing conception-based framework. For the purpose of this study, three hypotheses were tested: 1) the effectiveness of semantic sources, 2) the effectiveness of an indexing conception-based framework, and 3) the effectiveness of each of three indexing conception-based approaches (the content-oriented, the document-oriented, and the domain-oriented approaches). The experiments were conducted using a support vector machine implementation in WEKA (Witten, & Frank, 2000). The experiment results pointed out that cited works, source title, and title were as effective as the full text, while keyword was found more effective than the full text. In addition, the findings showed that an indexing conception-based framework was more effective than the full text. Especially, the content-oriented and the document-oriented indexing approaches were found more effective than the full text. Among three indexing conception-based approaches, the content-oriented approach and the document-oriented approach were more effective than the domain-oriented approach. In other words, in the context of a typical scientific journal article data set, the objective contents and authors' intentions were more focused that the possible users' needs. The research findings of this study support that incorporation of human indexers' indexing approaches or conception in conjunction with semantic sources has a positive impact on the effectiveness of automatic subject term assignment.

Abstract:

McGrath, Donna Lynette. ""Doing serious work or just playing?" : computer games in subject English." Queensland University of Technology, 2004. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/15832/.

Full text
Abstract:
The central focus of this study is to look at the legitimacy of using computer games for textual study in subject English and to understand the value that non-traditional forms of narrative text can have in enhancing student learning and enjoyment. This thesis argues that when students are engaged in textual study that is pleasurable, learning outcomes can be enhanced. Narrative computer games are appropriately placed within the realm of popular cultural texts, therefore, this study is also located within a cultural studies field of inquiry. A range of theoretical lenses which are appropriate to this field, such as critical theory, poststructuralism, reader response theories and narratology, are drawn upon in order to provide different perspectives on knowledge, relationships of power, and elements of story. These multiple perspectives are combined to construct a methodological framework for my research that brings a richness to data analysis. In locating my study within this multi-dimensional methodological framework, it is possible to achieve a layering and interpretation of the many different responses to the binaries of “work” versus “play” inherent in my title. The study focuses on a junior secondary English class at a school in South-east Queensland. The students undertook a curriculum unit which used a critical literacy framework to study the narratives and cultural identifications inherent in a number of computer games. The participants’ responses to “play” within the classroom forms one facet of the study; the depth of narrative experience enabled by computer games forms another facet; and the final facet examines the cultural responses to newer forms of literacies. The study concludes that using narrative computer games as a form of text for study in subject English allows for an examination of new forms of literacies that are student-friendly. A hybridised form of communication and pedagogy is also suggested. Narrative computer games allow for pleasure and play in the classroom, albeit in a less traditional way, and a hybridised communication can allow students and teachers access to a dialogue that values the learning experiences associated with this textual medium.

Abstract:
The Arizona Child Acoustic Database consists of longitudinal audio recordings from a group of children over a critical period of growth and development (ages 2-7 years). The goal of this database is to 1) document acoustic changes in speech production that may be related to physical growth 2) inform development of a model of speech production for child talkers. This work was funded by NSF BSC-1145011 awarded to Kate Bunton, Ph.D. and Brad Story, Ph.D, Principal Investigators. This database contains longitudinal audio recordings of 55 American English speaking children between the ages of 2-7 at 3-month intervals. Since children began the study at different ages, some children have fewer recording sessions than others. The database can also be used to provide cross-sectional data for children of a specific age. Please refer to the subject data table for information on specific sessions available. All children were recorded using the same protocol; therefore, task numbers are consistent across children and sessions. A calibration tone is included as Record 1 for all sessions. The speech protocol focused on production of English monopthong and diphthong vowels in isolation, sVd, hVd, and monosyllabic real words. In addition, the protocol includes several nonsense vowel-to-vowel transitions. Speakers were prompted either verbally by investigators or by graphical prompts. Details of the protocol with reference to task numbers can be found in the protocol spreadsheet. Details on data recording: All samples were recorded digitally using an AKG SE 300B microphone with a mouth to mic distance of approximately 10 inches. Signals were recorded digitally using a Marantz PMD671, 16 bit PCM (uncompressed) at 44.1KHz. Recordings are made available in .wav format. Individual zip files contain all recordings from a single session.
Recording sessions included 5 years; 3 months.
