Abstract:
In an automated online telepathy test, each participant had four senders, two actual and two virtual, generated by the computer. In a series of 12 30-sec. trials, the computer selected one of the senders at random and asked him to write a message to the subject. After 30 sec., the participant was asked to guess who had written a message. After the computer had recorded his guess, it sent him the message. In a total of 6,000 trials, there were 1,559 hits (26.7%), significantly above the chance expectation of 25%. In filmed tests, the hit rate was very similar. The hit rate with actual senders was higher than with virtual senders, but there was a strong guessing bias in favour of actual senders. When high-scoring subjects were retested, hit rates generally declined, but one subject repeatedly scored above chance.

Abstract:
Although usability tests are typically conducted with a purpose of making products less stressful for people to use, the usability testing process itself can be stressful for many test participants. The combination of trying to use a new product, being videotaped, and being watched by others, is a potentially stressful environment for many people. Although the Subject Precautions section of the Human Factors Society Code of Ethics clearly states that “the exposure of human or animal research subjects to … stress” should be “commensurate with the significance of the problem being researched,” the Code of Ethics does not provide guidance for reducing exposure of human subjects to stress. This paper describes several practical extensions to the Subject Precautions that can help reduce stress associated with participating as a subject in a usability test. The recommendations in this paper are based on anecdotal evidence gathered in numerous usability tests conducted in both laboratory and field settings. Recommendations are included for preparing the test environment, recruiting test participants, and interacting with participants during testing.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to address the concept and the step-by-step procedure of a high-precision optical alignment test for spacecrafts using digital theodolites. The proposed scheme focuses on the non-contact alignment qualification of spacecraft components during the integration and test phases until the launch event. Design/methodology/approach The proposed approach is based on the exploitation of the auto-collimation feature of theodolites and several prisms attached to the requested component and satellite configuration. As soon as the misalignment measurement including the difference between the real and desired attitude or position aberration of an instrument is made, the results must be transformed from the component level to the system level for misalignment error identification in the spacecraft dynamic model. Findings The paper introduces the main instruments, the defined coordinate systems and the architecture of the optical spacecraft misalignment test. Moreover, the guideline of the test implementation and the resulting data process have been presented carefully. Research limitations/implications There is no limitation associated with this method because the procedure is applicable for high-precision typical missions. Practical implications This paper describes a fully implementable scheme to examine any possible inaccuracy in mounting of the spacecraft components both in position and orientation. The test can be performed without the need for a huge budget or complicated hardwares. Originality/value The contribution of this work revolves around illustrating the context and procedure of the spacecraft misalignment test which has remained unknown in literature despite the frequent implementation in the different satellite projects.

Abstract:
The thesis is made up by four studies, on the comprehensive theme of integrated and subject-specific science education in Swedish compulsory school. A literature study on the matter is followed by an expert survey, then a case study and ending with two analyses of students' science results from PISA 2003 and PISA 2006. The first two studies explore similarities and differences between integrated and subject-specific science education, i.e. Science education and science taught as Biology, Chemsitry and Physics respectively. The two following analyses of PISA 2003 and PISA 2006 data put forward the question whether there are differences in results of students' science literacy scores due to different types of science education. The expert survey compares theories of integration to the Swedish science education context. Also some difference in intention, in the school case study, some slight differences in the way teachers plan the science education  are shown, mainly with respect to how teachers involve students in their planning. The statistical analysis of integrated and subject-specific science education comparing students' science results from PISA 2003 shows no difference between students or between schools. The analysis of PISA 2006, however, shows small differences between girls' results with integrated and subject-specific science education both in total scores and in the three scientific literacy competencies. No differences in boys' results are shown on different science education.

Abstract:

Massey, Ingrid Ahrens. "Faculty and Student Perceptions of Reading and Language Arts Preparation and Preparedness for the State Subject Area Test." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/3177.

Full text
Abstract:
Since changes to the reading/language arts State Subject Area Test (SSAT) in late 2010, elementary education teacher candidates at a teacher training college in the Southern United States have experienced declining scores resulting in test failure and delaying student teaching and graduation. The purpose of this case study was to identify factors that students and faculty perceived as most beneficial in preparing students to pass the SSAT. Constructivism served as the conceptual framework for this study addressing the effects of collaboration, hands-on learning, and application of knowledge. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit 6 elementary education students who had taken the SSAT and 4 full-time reading and language arts faculty members who participated in semistructured interviews. Analysis of coded data indicated themes of preference for experiential learning, intensive strategy instruction, and a review of tested content. Based on study findings, a 3-day professional development training was created to provide students a review of tested subject matter through embedded strategy instruction and opportunities for hands-on application of learning. Implications for positive social change include preparing students to pass the SSAT in fewer attempts so they can graduate on schedule and begin their careers. Local communities may benefit from the addition of highly qualified teachers ready to enter elementary classrooms across the state during a critical teacher shortage.

Raymond, Alberta. "Southeastern High School Teachers' Perceptions and Experiences in Preparing Students for Required Standardized Testing." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/2684.

Full text
Abstract:
The reauthorized No Child Left Behind requirement for annual state-mandated student examinations led some teachers to believe that they must teach solely for test preparation. This case study explored teachers' perceptions of preparing students for the state-mandated tests at an economically disadvantaged high school in the southeastern United States. Ten teachers were interviewed to understand their perceptions of 'teaching to the test,' feelings of pressure and stress, motivation to teach, and recommendations for integration of creative teaching strategies. The researcher collected demographic data, such as gender, grades taught, and subjects taught, and manually calculated frequencies and percentages. With an electronic software program for qualitative data management, the researcher analyzed the data manually by iterative review of the interview transcripts for codes and themes. Teachers' perceptions of standardized test preparation were both positive and negative. Preparation fostered discipline and content mastery but inhibited teacher creativity and stressed students. Teachers experienced pressure and stress with unhealthy physical reactions, lack of competence, and responsibility to students. Teachers' motivations were both positive and negative. Some experienced increased self-efficacy, and other experienced decreased motivation; commitment to students; and inadequate institutional support. Teachers recommended incorporation of creative teaching strategies and professional development (PD) programs. Findings led to a PD for addressing the problems and creative strategies (e.g., reciprocal teaching, graphic organizers). Findings may help teachers reduce negative feelings toward standardized test preparation and use innovative strategies for students' more effective learning.

Andreasson, Eva. "Fairness and Flexibility in Oral Examination." Thesis, Umeå University, Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, 2005. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-717.

Full text
Abstract:

This is a descriptive ethnographical study with the purpose of examining teachers’ and students’ experiences of oral examination at a State Pedagogical University in western Russia. The study also focused on finding the characteristics of oral examination and the contextual factors influencing its implementation. The research was done using participatory observations and interviews. The results show that interviewees experience oral assessment in general as positive. Their descriptions are summarised and analysed using a number of key concepts, of which flexibility, subjectivity, individualisation, and fairness are the most important. The study also shows that contextual factors such as culture, traditions, and organisational framework have large impact on how the examination is done. The conclusion is that oral examination has both gins and losses, since the teacher’s active participation creates possibilities for individualisation and deep probing of the students’ knowledge, but is also a source of bias because of its subjectivity.

Thesis, Luleå tekniska universitet, Institutionen för hälsa, lärande och teknik, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:ltu:diva-85937.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction Lateral elbow pain is a common disorder and affects 1-3 % of the population each year. Beside the typical characterization with pain in restricted dorsal and radial deviation of the wrist and local tenderness of the lateral epicondyle, a neurodynamic dysfunction of the radial nerve can co-exist with the tendon dysfunction.  Purpose The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of individualized neurodynamic treatment in combination with neurodynamic self-treatment in patient with persistent lateral elbow pain with a neurodynamic dysfunction of the radial nerve on grip strength, pain, disability, and function.  Method A single subject experimental design with A-B-A design was conducted. Seven participants with lateral elbow pain and a neurodynamic dysfunction of the radial nerve were recruited for the study. Five participants completed the study which consisted of individualized neurodynamic treatment directed to the neurodynamic dysfunction in combination with home exercises which included self-mobilization with sliders and/or tensioners in combination of the strengthening- and stretching exercises. The treatment was evaluated by pain-free and maximal grip strength, the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) and Patient-rated Tennis Elbow Evaluation (PRTEE) questionnaires and range of motion of the upper limb neurodynamic test (ULNT) biased n. radialis.   Results The result of this SSED shows that neurodynamic treatment with manual mobilization and self-mobilization improves the ROM of the ULNT n. radialis in all five participants. Neurodynamic treatment also improved outcomes of DASH and PRTEE in 3 of the 5 participants.  Conclusion Neurodynamic treatment including manual mobilization and self-mobilization in combination with individual strength exercises tends to improve self-rated pain and disability, function and mechanosenstivity of the radial nerve in patients with persistent lateral elbow pain.

Abstract:
Medical imaging technologies offer the benefits of faster and accurate diagnosis. When the medical imaging combined with the digitization, they offer the advantage of permanent storage and fast transmission to any geographical location. However, there is a need for efficient compression algorithms that alleviate the taxing burden of both large storage space and transmission bandwidth requirements. The Perceptually Lossless Medical Image Coder is a new image compression technique. It provides a solution to challenge of delivering clinically critical information in the shortest time possible. It embeds the visual pruning into the JPEG 2000 coding framework to achieve the optimal compression without losing the visual integrity of medical images. However, the performance of the PLMIC under certain medical image operation is still unknown. In this thesis, we investigate the performance of the PLMIC by applying linear, quadratic and cubic standard and centered B-spline interpolation filters. In order to evaluate the visual performance, a subjective assessment consisting of 30 medical images and 6 image processing experts was conducted. The perceptually lossless medical image coder was compared to the state-of-the-art JPEG-LS compliant LOCO and NLOCO image coders. The results have shown overall, there were no perceivable differences of statistical significance when the medical images were enlarged by a factor of 2. The findings of the thesis may help the researchers to further improve the coder. Additionally, it may also notify the radiologists the performance of the PLMIC coder to help them with correct diagnosis.

Schneider, Sarah, Daniel Wolf, and Astrid Schütz. Workshop for the Assessment of Social-Emotional Competences : Application of SEC-I and SEC-SJT. Otto-Friedrich-Universität, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.20378/irb-49180.

Full text
Abstract:
The modular workshop offers a science-based introduction to the concept of social-emotional competences. It focuses on the psychological assessment of such competences in in institutions specialized in the professional development of people with learning disabilities. As such, the workshop is primarily to be understood as an application-oriented training programme for professionals who work in vocational education and use (or teach the usage of) the assessment tools SEC-I and SEC-SJT (Inventory and Situational Judgment Test for the assessment of social-emotional competence in young people with (sub-) clinical cognitive or psychological impairment) which were developed at the University of Bamberg. The workshop comprises seven subject areas that can be flexibly put together as required: theoretical basics and definitions of social-emotional competence, the basics of psychological assessment, potential difficulties in its use, usage of the self-rating scale, the situational judgment test, the observer-rating scale, and objective observation of behaviour. The general aim of this workshop is to learn how to use and apply the assessment tools in practical settings.

Filmer, Deon, Ezequiel Molina, and Waly Wane. Identifying Effective Teachers: Lessons from Four Classroom Observation Tools. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), August 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-rise-wp_2020/045.

Full text
Abstract:
Four different classroom observation instruments—from the Service Delivery Indicators, the Stallings Observation System, the Classroom Assessment Scoring System, and the Teach classroom observation instrument—were implemented in about 100 schools across four regions of Tanzania. The research design is such that various combinations of tools were administered to various combinations of teachers, so these data can be used to explore the commonalities and differences in the behaviors and practices captured by each tool, the internal properties of the tools (for example, how stable they are across enumerators, or how various indicators relate to one another), and how variables collected by the various tools compare to each other. Analysis shows that inter-rater reliability can be low, especially for some of the subjective ratings; principal components analysis suggests that lower-level constructs do not map neatly to predetermined higher-level ones and suggest that the data have only a few dimensions. Measures collected during teacher observations are associated with student test scores, but patterns differ for teachers with lower versus higher subject content knowledge.

Robinson, W. Evaluation of thin flexible pavements under simulated aircraft traffic. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), December 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/39161.

Full text
Abstract:
A full-scale airfield pavement test section was constructed and trafficked by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) to evaluate the performance of relatively thin airfield pavement structures. The test section consisted of 16 test items that included three asphalt pavement thicknesses and two different aggregate base courses. The test items were subjected to simulated aircraft traffic to evaluate their response and performance to realistic aircraft loads and to evaluate the effect of reductions in tire pressure on thin asphalt pavement. Rutting behavior, pavement cracking, instrumentation response, and falling weight deflectometer response were monitored at selected traffic intervals. The results of this study were used to extend existing Department of Defense pavement design and evaluation techniques to include the evaluation of airfield pavement sections that do not meet the current criteria for aggregate base quality and minimum asphalt concrete surface thickness. These performance data were used to develop new aggregate base failure design curves using existing stress-based design methodology.

Gaponenko, Artiom, and Andrey Golovin. Electronic magazine with rating system of an estimation of individual and collective work of students. Science and Innovation Center Publishing House, October 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.12731/er0043.06102017.

Full text
Abstract:
«The electronic magazine with rating system of an estimation of individual and collective work of students» (EM) is developed in document Microsoft Excel with use of macros. EM allows to automate all the calculated operations connected with estimation of amount scored by students in each form of the current control. EM provides automatic calculation of rating of the student with reflection of a maximum quantity of the points received in given educational group. The rating equal to “1” is assigned to the student who has got a maximum quantity of points for the certain date. For the other students the share of their points in this maximum size is indicated. The choice of an estimation is made in an alphabetic format according to requirements of the European translation system of test units for the international recognition of results of educational outcomes (ECTS - European Credit Transfer System), by use of a corresponding scale of an estimation. The list of students is placed on the first page of magazine and automatically displayed on all subsequent pages. For each page of magazine the optimal size of document printing is set with automatic enter of current date and time. Owing to accounting rate of complexity of task EM is the universal technical tool which can be used for any subject matter.
