Abstract:
Analysis of 56 outcrop exposures in cut banks along the Nottawasaga River in southern Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada, has led to the identification of eight stratigraphic units (SU1–SU8) that represent a record of changing environmental conditions during deglaciation and exhibit strong controls on shallow groundwater flow in the region. The stratigraphic succession is floored by the Late Wisconsin Newmarket Till (SU1), which is locally overlain by ice-proximal debris flow deposits (SU2). These glacial sediments are overlain by glaciolacustrine silt rhythmites (SU3) that pass upwards into deltaic sand (SU4) and channelized fluviodeltaic sand and gravel (SU5). Lying above the fluvial deposits are widespread interbedded glaciolacustrine sands and silt (SU6), which coarsen up-section toward the ground surface. The succession is locally capped by fluviodeltaic (SU7) and younger fluvial (SU8) deposits. These SUs record sedimentary environments that existed during deglaciation of the region and provide insight into the evolution of glacial lakes Schomberg and Algonquin and the Nipissing phase of the upper Great Lakes. The environmental changes described from sediments along the Nottawasaga River provide insights into basin-scale events that occurred throughout the upper Great Lakes during deglaciation. Qualitative observations of groundwater discharge from sediments at outcrop faces are used to characterize the hydraulic function of the stratigraphic units as well as possible preferential groundwater flow pathways in the shallow subsurface.

Abstract:
In this paper, we present the first ridge-gap waveguide resonator made with a polymer base. It is designed for the frequency range 220–325 GHz, and is fabricated solely using a Au coated two-layer SU8-based process. The design is based on previous work done with Si. The new process has advantages such as fewer and cheaper process steps. The SU8 ridge-gap waveguide resonator is made in order to obtain attenuation characteristics via the measured Q-factor of the resonator. The ridge-gap waveguide resonator has the same dimensions as the previous one fabricated in Si, and the same thickness of the Au coating. The SU8-based resonator shows an attenuation loss of 0.41 dB/mm at 282.2 GHz compared to the Si-based resonator with an attenuation loss of 0.043 dB/mm at 283.5 GHz. This makes the SU8 process a more cost-effective alternative to the Si process

The profound changes observed over the last twenty five years in the electronics world currently haves courses in biology, partly thanks to biotechnology. The concept commonly called "lab-on-chip" (LOC) owes its growth to the considerable effort that has been conducted on technology development of micro-fabrication. The number of technological tools currently available for the manufacture of microfluidic networks is important but the realization of complex three-dimensional systems remains a challenge. The development of micro and nanotechnology for new materials such as polymers, and especially the SU-8, opened the way for more sophisticated integration as we present it in this work. We expose the details of an approach in the design, modeling and fabrication of magnetic actuators integrated into SU-8 microfluidic networks for magnetic beads handling; all being developed on a flexible substrate of PET. The development of characterizations tools systems was also presented. They permit the establishment of an experimental protocol to assess and quantify the different electrical, thermal, fluidic and magnetic parameters contributing to obtain a LOC device in the efficient movement of fluids, trapping of magnetic balls, transfer of one area to another and to their orientation through preferred channels

Abstract:
This work presents a new design type of the older well known tunable micromachined Fabry-Pérot filter (FPI4). Compared to the previous system the new design (FPI5) aimed to avoid the problems as sticking, short circuit between the shield and the electrode as well as the malfunction in dicing and separation. Furthermore an identification mark and a new separated electrode were to be improved. The conclusion of this optimization was the new Design FPI5. The whole geometry was in addition to the adhesive bonding with SU8 moreover designed for the direct bonding, which was successfully verified in the FPI design with two moveable reflector carriers. Additionally a verification of the bonding strength at different bonding parameters was done. This verification showed that a 50 % higher bonding strength could be achieved by using the new bonding parameters in comparison to the normally used bonding parameters

Abstract:
The benefits of microwave technology in materials processing is well documented and researched. It offers many potential advantages over conventional processing such as rapid heating, faster processing times and more consistent product quality. However the actual implementation of this technology has been lacking and the benefits have gone largely unrealised. This is due largely in part to the non-uniform heating obtained in multimode cavities in conventional microwave processing. Recently, a new processing method dubbed the Variable Frequency Microwave (VFM) Technique has been developed to overcome the inherent problems associated with conventional microwave processing. By sweeping through a bandwidth of frequencies, the limitations observed in conventional processing, and specifically the problem of heat uniformity, are avoided. With the increase in research activities in alternative processing methods for new and current materials that will provide better product quality as well as time and cost savings, the VFM technique has the potential to rejuvenate interest in microwave processing. This thesis documents the research work undertaken on the VFM technique with emphasis on its characterization, optimisation and implementation to suitable applications in particular in the upcoming area of Microfabrication. A commercial Variable Frequency Microwave with an operating bandwidth of 2.5-8.0 GHz was investigated through modelling and experimental work to determine the energy distribution within a multimode cavity and to provide an insight of the mechanisms of the method. Modelling was found to be an efficient and cost-effective tool to simulate VFM and to examine the reported advantages of this new technique. Results obtained confirm the superiority of the VFM method over the conventional fixed-frequency processing showing a marked improvement in the heating uniformity achieved. Quantitative analysis of the three major VFM parameters that influence heat uniformity - Sweep Rate, Bandwidth and Central Frequency - indicate that although slight variation in heat uniformity was observed when changing these parameters, these variations are only small which implies that the VFM technique is quite insensitive to changes in the parameters making it quite a robust system. An analytical model of the Variable Frequency Microwave technique was developed and it was found that the heating uniformity could be further optimised using a sweep rate that varies as the inverse of the frequency squared (weighted-sweep). In this study, VFM Technique was successfully extended to the Micro-Electro- Mechanical Systems (MEMS) industry as an alternative method for the processing of a polymer system - negative-tone SU8 photoresist - which is gaining widespread use in Microfabrication. The VFM method was compared to conventional hotplate curing as well as a new hybrid curing method introduced in this work and the product quality assessed optically and by thermal analysis. Results from this work indicate that the Variable Frequency Microwave technique is a viable alternative to the conventional cure currently used in practice. With proper optimisation of the VFM parameters, VFM was found to provide samples that are comparable or better than conventionally cured samples in terms of properties and microstructure quality. Using the VFM method, enhancement in cure rates and drying rates, which are described by others as microwave effects, were observed and investigated. A significant increase on the degree of cure of up to 20% greater than conventional cure was observed when VFM was utilized and an apparent enhancement in solvent evaporation in the thin SU8 films observed. Experiments undertaken show that microwaves irradiation can enhance diffusion rates of cyclopentanone in the SU8 system by approximately 75-100%. The findings signify that SU8 curing at lower temperatures or rapid curing are possible and long drying times could be reduced significantly thus alleviating many of the problems associated with conventional thermal curing. Outcomes of this study demonstrate the ability of the new VFM technique to provide uniform heating which is essential for materials processing. Its application to the emerging field of Microfabrication exhibits its unique advantages over conventional curing methods and establishes itself to be a versatile and robust processing tool. The experimental observations made under microwave irradiation are further proof of the existence of specific microwave effects which is one of the most debatable topics in the Microwave processing field. A mechanism based on the Cage Model by Zwanzig [1983] was put forward to explain the increase in transport rates.

Abstract:
The miniaturization, fabrication and integration of RF passive components are current major challenges, also taking into account the fabrication cost which is very important especially for consumer applications. Passive components such as inductors and transformers are subject to an ongoing development to improve their performance and reduce the area occupied. The work described in this manuscript is part of that context and target the development of a new technological process allowing the production of low-cost three-dimensional high-performance inductive components. The work presented in this paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter describes the state of the art of integrated inductors and transformers by addressing the main topologies used fabrication technologies and applications. In the second chapter, the study and optimization of solenoid inductors and transformers is discussed after describing the origins of performance limiting losses. For this, we use the 3D electromagnetic simulation. In the third chapter, the problem concerning the characterization of inductive components with high Q factor is raised. After finding that the measurement environment artificially reduces performance, some solutions are proposed and experimentally verified. Finally, the last chapter discusses the fabrication and characterization of developed components. The best measured performance corresponds to a quality factor of 61 to 5.4 GHz for an inductance value of 2.5 nH and a maximum available gain of -0.5 dB to 0.39 dB over the range from 3.8 to 6.5 GHz for a 2:2 transformer. These results place these components among the best current achievements

Abstract:
Full integration of energy conversion devices for compact power supply circuits is still encountering strong technological locks, especially to integrate passive inductive and capacitive components. The increasing working frequency of those devices, which already reaches 1 Megahertz, would enable the size reduction of passive components and then their integration. Nevertheless, losses, which highly depend on frequency and technology, may complicate or even stop this increase. The objective of this thesis is the systematic study of integrated inductors structures through the developing of precise modeling and simulating methods on the frequency range from 0Hz to 1GHz. First, an analytic model based on PEEC (Partial Element Equivalent Circuit) method has been developed. This modeling approach has been adapted to the studied components: rotational symmetry, not negligible section conductors, inhomogeneous media, etc… The final model splits the physical study of the component into two steps: electromagnetic computations on subparts of the set (partial elements) and global frequency response calculus with the equivalent electrical models of the subparts. A full process for the technological realization of inductive components has also been achieved in order to experimentally verify the modeling. The improvement of design resolution and increase of copper electroplating thickness, as planarization of conductor levels with SU8 resin have been specifically studied. Those overhangs have permitted the realization of multilevel and multiconductor inductors which present good features at high frequency. Finally, the characterization of prototypes at low frequency has been enabled by the realization of an impedance measurement bench we developed for the range from 40Hz to 110MHz and high frequency characterizations have been performed with a network analyzer. This work has been completed by the development of a very fast computing analytical model for the calculus of the magnetic field in integrated inductors. This method has been used to find the repartition of the magnetic field generated by integrated planar magnetic actuators excited by a DC current for a microsystems and microfluidics application

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis was to demonstrate the potentialities of inkjet printing for driving an HLED containing red phosphorescent metallic clusters, with organic field effect transistors. To achieve this goal, the project was divided into two parts: I) The fabrication and optimization of n-type organic transistors by photolithography and then transfer to inkjet printing. II) Parallel to the development of transistors, I focused on designing luminescent hybrid materials for HLED realization. Concerning transistors, we obtained a better understanding of the factors influencing the charge injection but also the electrical stability for bottom gate/ bottom contact geometry transistor with evaporated C60 semiconductor. We have demonstrated that the contact resistance is on the one hand governed by the morphology of the SCO at the electrodes and on the other hand independent of the metal work function. In addition, we have observed that transistors electrical stability of is strongly impacted by the source and drain contact nature. The optimization of photolithography transistors, which essentially consisted of modifying the interfaces, allowed us to develop efficient n-type transistors with saturated field effect mobilities of up to 1.5 cm2/V.s for a maximal process temperature of 115 °C. The technological transfer to inkjet printed transistors was then performed. We then demonstrated that gate electrode and insulator morphologies deposited by inkjet printing, have a negligible impact on transistors performances. For our printed structure, charges injection at the S/D electrodes is in fact the key factor for high performance transistors realization. Finally, red phosphorescent materials based on molybdenum octahedral metal cluster have been developed. The resulting hybrid copolymer showed photoluminescence quantum yield up to 51%. The realization of the HLED was then carried out by combining a commercial blue LED and the copolymer doped with octahedral molybdenum clusters for possible applications in biology or lighting

Abstract:

Corsani, Gabriele, Leonardo Rombai, and Mariella Zoppi, eds. Abbazie e paesaggi medievali in Toscana. Florence: Firenze University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.36253/978-88-6655-645-9.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thermal micro-actuators are a promising solution to the need for large-displacement, low-power MEMS actuators. Potential applications of these devices are micro-relays, tunable impedance RF networks, and miniature medical instrumentation. In this paper the development of thermal microactuators based on SU8 is described. A polymeric sacrificial layer allows the removal of the SU8 mold to occur without the use of harsh etching conditions. In addition to silicon non-traditional for MEMS substrates such as RF-printed circuit boards have also been successfully utilized to fabricate the devices. The PCB-based devices exhibited similar characteristics, thus opening the possibility of integrating RF MEMS directly on PCBs. The actuators were benchmarked with respect to power consumption, stroke, and response time. The fabricated nickel actuators are shown to be robust with displacements in the range of 76 micrometers using 80 mW of power. Actual cooling transients were captured using a two-step constant-current excitation method. It is further demonstrated through analytical models that the thermal cooling times limit the bandwidth of these devices below 1KHz. Several commercially relevant applications of the developed actuators are also discussed. One such application is a vibro-tactile display for disabled individuals.
