Abstract:
Abstract The main advantage of inductively coupled plasma spectrometers with axially viewed plasma relative to the radially viewed plasma is the better detection power. The detection limits of the former are about 5-10 times lower than the latter. On the other hand, the axially viewed plasma has disadvantages. The most notable is the increased number of interference effects. In this paper, the study of the interference effects of aluminium on the atom- and ion-lines of alkaline earth metals are presented by examining different types of sample-introduction devices, such as a simple Meinhart-type concentric nebuliser, a V-groove nebuliser using a Sturman-Masters spray chamber, and an ultrasonic nebuliser

Abstract:

"Sigma-delta quantization and Sturmian words." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/14203.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, our main focus is Sigma-Delta quantization schemes. These are commonly used in state-of-art Analog-to-digital conversion technology. Their main advantage is the ease of implementation and more importantly their insensitivity to certain circuit imperfections. When we compare sigma-delta scheme with pulse-code modulation (PCM), sigma-delta is inferior in terms of rate distortion because an N-bit kth order sigma-delta quantizer produces an approximation with the error of order O(N-k) whereas the corresponding N-bit PCM scheme has accuracy of O(2−N)). However, this is a raw estimate of the actual rate-distortion characteristic of sigma-delta as one can further compress the bitstreams obtained via sigma-delta quantization. Even though this observation was made earlier in [10] under certain assumptions, to our knowledge, it was not investigated fully. In this thesis, such an investigation is made for first-order sigma-delta quantizers by using some results from symbolic dynamics literature on “Sturmian words”. Surprisingly, it turns out that the approximation error is a function of the “actual bit-rate”, i.e., the bit-rate after compressing an N-bit first-order sigma-delta encoding. In addition, in this thesis, we will introduce a new setup for sampling a bandlimited function and then quantizing these samples via first-order sigma-delta scheme. This simple but surprisingly efficient technique will allow us to get a better bound for the approximation rate of sigma-delta schemes and it will allow us to apply the derived results for compression of the bitstreams.

Day, Henry Clive. "Floquet calculations of atomic photo-electron spectra in intense laser fields." Thesis, Durham University, 1997. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/4709/.

Full text
Abstract:
We present the results of Floquet calculations of rates of photo-detachment from a short-range three-dimensional model atom in an intense high-frequency laser field. We find that beyond a certain intensity the atom becomes progressively more stable against ionisation and that at this intensity the ATI spectrum exhibits a plateau of the kind that has recently been reported in the literature [101]. We also discuss the angular distribution of the photo- electrons and examine the special case of a laser-induced degeneracy in the frequency-intensity plane. In the Floquet method one represents the time-dependent Schrodinger equation by an infinite series of coupled time-independent equations, although in practice one must truncate these to a system of finite size. We study the consequences of this truncation by performing a series of calculations for the rate of (resonant) multiphoton detachment from a one-dimensional model atom in a laser field. We find that if the wavefunction is modified to take full account of the truncation then the number of equations which must be retained in order to obtain accurate results is significantly reduced. In performing a Floquet calculation for a real atomic system it is generally assumed that the atom remains at all times in a single diabatic Floquet state, rather than in a superposition of such states. By constructing a suitable two- state model we investigate the validity of this approximation and discuss the usefulness of the Floquet method in modelling an actual experiment. We present results for the multiphoton ionisation of H(1s) by a monochromatic circularly polarised field and by a linearly polarised bichromatic field of commensurable frequencies. In the monochromatic case we draw qualitative comparisons with the predictions of Keldysh theory and use the concept of a propensity rule to explain why the angular distributions remain essentially perturbative at high intensities. In the bichromatic case we study the structure of the ATI spectrum and in particular the role played by a relative phase. The angular distributions are found to be strongly affected by the low- frequency field even when its intensity is too small to cause any appreciable ionisation of the system.

Abstract:
We investigate a class of minimal sequences on a finite alphabet Ak = {1,2,...,k} having (k - 1)n + 1 distinct subwords of length n. These sequences, originally defined by P. Arnoux and G. Rauzy, are a natural generalization of binary Sturmian sequences. We describe two simple combinatorial algorithms for constructing characteristic Arnoux-Rauzy sequences (one of which is new even in the Sturmian case). Arnoux-Rauzy sequences arising from fixed points of primitive morphisms are characterized by an underlying periodic structure. We show that every Arnoux-Rauzy sequence contains arbitrarily large subwords of the form V^2+ε and, in the Sturmian case, arbitrarily large subwords of the form V^3+ε. Finally, we prove that an irrational number whose base b-digit expansion is an Arnoux-Rauzy sequence is transcendental.

Abstract:
In the paper, we show a connection between a regular fractional Sturm-Liouville problem with left and right Caputo derivatives of order in the range (1/2, 1) and a 1D space-time fractional diffusion problem in a bounded domain. Both problems include mixed boundary conditions in a finite space interval. We prove that in the case of vanishing mixed boundary conditions, the Sturm-Liouville problem can be rewritten in terms of Riesz derivatives. Then, we apply earlier results on its eigenvalues and eigenfunctions to construct a weak solution of the 1D fractional diffusion equation with variable diffusivity. Adding an assumption on the summability of the eigenvalues’ inverses series, we formulate a theorem on a strong solution of the 1D fractional diffusion problem.
