Abstract:

AbstractThe topic of this article is the structural similarity of neighboring languages belonging to two different branches of the Germanic languages. The German-Danish border region is characterized by longitudinal language contact between West and North Germanic varieties which have developed common features not to be found in other varieties of these languages spoken outside the contact area. These shared features are results of contact and/or of language shift(s). This paper focuses on convergence in verb phrases. Nine examples of different aspects of verbal convergences are presented covering mainly semantic and syntactical code-copying.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper examines two different strategies found in direct object encoding on the basis of a sample of 159 languages. In particular, this paper deals with the differences between symmetric (i.e. the alternation between two or more overt markers) and asymmetric (i.e. the alternation between a zero and one of more overt markers) alternations. The investigation is aimed at determining whether there are any evident cross-linguistic regularities with respect to the factors involved in these two kinds of alternation. It will be argued that the difference in the formal realization of direct object encoding is related to the distinct functions that these two structures perform cross-linguistically.While asymmetric alternations are regulated by referential properties of the direct object referent, symmetric alternations are governed by parameters related to verbal semantics, such as affectedness and boundedness, polarity, and quantification.

Abstract:
The issue of developmental models of human beings and their implementation in both pedagogical practice and theory are critically reflected within this thesis. In the beginning, preliminary considerations of the etymology and systematization of development (between nature and nurture) and model (as opposed to theory, simulation, scheme) are framed. Based on Günther Bucks''s approach (from „Beispiel“ to „Beispiel“) several developmental models by Rudolf Steiner, Maria Montessori, Jean Piaget, Lawrence Kohlberg, Erik Erikson and Werner Loch are critically examined. Subsequently, considerations on addressing the phenomenon of development from the perspective of education theory and „Bildung“ in an appropriate contemporary way are given expression. On the basis of the outlined models it is depicted that only a concept of development that is exempt from absolute teleology and linearity can be compatible with modern ideas of educational anthropology and ethics. Hence, developmental models may only serve visualizing and regulating purposes. They often contradict fundamental principles such as „Bildsamkeit“ (the ability and necessity of self-forming) and participation within the process of education. Nevertheless, the rehabilitation of development thinking proves beneficial due to its ability to indicate the complex genealogy of human life and the opportunities as well as limitations of pedagogical actions.

Abstract:
STF is a large ensemble work in three movements: "Fatwa," "Hitchens," and "Albino Sex." It is scored for piano, double bass, cello, viola, violin, French horn, clarinet in Bb, bass clarinet in Bb, flute, baritone, tenor, alto, soprano, narrator, and electronics. Its underlying concept is how religious worldviews can collide with freedom of speech, atheism, and fundamental human rights. In extreme cases, zealots will interpret disease as evidence of divine intervention or even demand the death of blasphemers. The text in the first movement, “Fatwa,” expresses freedom of speech and incorporates passages from Salman Rushdie’s “The Satanic Verses.” The second movement, “Hitchens,” centers on atheism and incorporates two audio excerpts from Christopher Hitchens’s lecture at the 2009 Festival of Dangerous Ideas. In the final movement, “Albino Sex,” I construct a narrative using media headlines, paraphrased biblical verses, and my own text to depict the human rights crisis during the 1980s A.I.D.S. epidemic. Various organizational approaches to text and pitch distinguish one movement from the other; the three movements cohere through unifying devices that I draw from set theory.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate which difficulties Swedish students of German typically have and at the same time which structures they master without problems in order to give me, as a future teacher, some ideas how to create productive German lessons. Furthermore the students’ progression over the years is the main focus of this analysis. Students from the sixth grade up to the twelfth grade from two Swedish schools were asked to write essays which provide the corpus of this analysis. At the same time they were asked to fill in a questionnaire to conduct some, for the analysis, crucial background information. I begin my analysis by comparing the students’ essays within the classes and after that the essays of the different classes are compared with each other. At last a comparison with essays that were written as part of the national test during the late 90s will be made in order to find out whether students’ skills in German have changed over the years. Some theories concerning second language learning, for example Processability Theory, will be tested whether they apply for my test group or not.

Full text
Abstract:

In ASME 2018 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. Abstract:
Effective short-term load forecasting (STLF) plays an important role in demand-side management and power system operations. In this paper, STLF with three aggregation strategies are developed, which are information aggregation (IA), model aggregation (MA), and hierarchy aggregation (HA). The IA, MA, and HA strategies aggregate inputs, models, and forecasts, respectively, at different stages in the forecasting process. To verify the effectiveness of the three aggregation STLF, a set of 10 models based on 4 machine learning algorithms, i.e., artificial neural network, support vector machine, gradient boosting machine, and random forest, are developed in each aggregation group to predict 1-hour-ahead load. Case studies based on 2-year of university campus data with 13 individual buildings showed that: (a) STLF with three aggregation strategies improves forecasting accuracy, compared with benchmarks without aggregation; (b) STLF-IA consistently presents superior behavior than STLF based on weather data and STLF based on individual load data; (c) MA reduces the occurrence of unsatisfactory single-algorithm STLF models, therefore enhancing the STLF robustness; (d) STLF-HA produces the most accurate forecasts in distinctive load pattern scenarios due to calendar effects.

Abstract:
Abstract While there are many factors that should be considered when determining if a stud can be reused, one of them is the nut factor. The study described in this paper set out to determine if the nut factor of a Xylan 1424 coated stud is significantly affected by the age of the coating and/or the cycles of tightening. A load cell was used to compare the nut factor: 1) of previously installed (used) studs to new studs, 2) of a new and used stud that were tightened more than once, and 3) associated with the first tightening pass to subsequent passes for a new stud. The results show that the age of the stud and the amount it has been tightened contribute to an increased nut factor for used Xylan 1424 studs.

Abstract:
The boiling water reactor (BWR-3) in the Quad Cities (QC) Unit 2 Nuclear Power Plant experienced a significant increase in steam moisture under extended power up-rate (EPU) conditions. Inspection of the stem dryer showed it was likely that BWR steam dryer had been damaged by high cycle fatigue due to acoustic-induced vibration. The cause of the dryer failure was considered as flow-induced acoustic resonance at the stub pipes of safety relief valves (SRVs) in the main steam lines (MSLs). Acoustic resonance was considered to be generated by interaction between the sound field and an unstable shear layer across the closed side branches of the SRV stub pipes. We have started a research program on BWR dryers to develop their loading evaluation methods. Moreover, it has been necessary to evaluate the dryer integrity of BWR-5 plants which are the main type of BWR in Japan. In the present study, we used 1/10-scale BWR tests and analysis to investigate the flow-induced acoustic resonance in SRV stub pipes and propagation of fluctuating pressure from SRVs to the dryer through the MSLs. The test apparatus consisted of a steam dryer, a steam dome and 4 MSLs with 20 SRV stub pipes. Acoustic analysis was also applied to evaluate the propagation of fluctuating pressure from MSLs to the dryer. We demonstrated that acoustic resonance occurred in SRV stub pipes at higher velocity flows than in the normal operation and fluctuating pressure propagated from SRVs to the dryer. The amplitude of the fluctuating pressure due to several stub pipes was much larger than that in one stub pipe because of interaction between them. The fluctuating pressure generated in stub pipes was propagated to the dryer through the MSLs with decreasing amplitude. The amplitude of the fluctuating pressure observed at the top of stub pipes was reduced significantly in the MSLs and maintained fairly well in the steam dome. The flow-induced acoustic resonance did not occur for Strouhal number above 0.6 in the MSLs system of the BWR-5. Results of the tests were compared with those of acoustic analysis. The acoustic analysis could well predict the dryer loading.
