Wu, Hsiang-mei. "Chaucer and prejudices : a critical study of 'The Canterbury Tales'." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2015. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/58523/.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the prejudices in Geoffrey Chaucer‘s The Canterbury Tales. There are thirty pilgrims and twenty-two tales in this grand work. As it is unlikely to discuss all of them in one thesis, I focus my research on four pilgrims—the Miller, the Prioress, the Wife of Bath, and the Pardoner—to demonstrate Chaucer‘s prejudices in various aspects. The chapter on the Miller analyzes how men and women interact in sexual terms in the public domains and private spaces, investigating the poet‘s sexual discrimination in his final distribution of punishments for the characters as well as his chauvinistic disregard of the female body and its autonomy; Chaucer‘s punishment is not entirely of 'poetic justice' as it is dispensed at the cost of class victimization and the vilification of the female body. The Prioress‘s chapter discusses the poet‘s prejudices against female religious, exploring how Chaucer is affected by conventional descriptions of courtly ladies and contemporary conception of female religious‘ sexuality when he contradictorily glosses the Prioress as a romantic beauty; Chaucer‘s language prejudice and his innuendo of the Prioress‘s sexual attraction reflect his contempt and mis-evaluation of the Prioress‘s status, social function, and professional abilities. The chapter on the Wife of Bath examines 'The Wife of Bath‘s Prologue' as a manifestation of a medieval woman‘s life education, demonstrating how Alisoun is molded by mercantile marriage transactions, the tradition of misogyny, and the auctoritees‘ ill-meant religious instruction through garbled texts; the Wife‘s deafness does not signify her resistance or inability to understand men‘s 'truth', but an undeserved punishment from her frustrated educators. The Pardoner‘s chapter examines the Pardoner as a feminized and marginalized figure, exhibiting the narrator‘s, the Host‘s, and the Canterbury pilgrims‘ fear and hate of the 'different', the 'perverse', and the non-heterosexual; the Pardoner is treated as 'Other' of the Canterbury group and is brutally 'Othered' by the pilgrims despite his efforts in heterosexual identity and conformity. My study of Chaucer‘s prejudices will naturally extend to the investigations of modern readers‘ prejudices, particularly critics‘ false interpretation of the Miller‘s Alisoun‘s 'escape', denial of the Prioress‘s beauty, misconception of Jankyn‘s violence, and unconscious siding with patriarchy in the 'Othering' of the Pardoner, among others.

Stewart, Kristy Gilbert. "Blogs, Books, & Breadcrumbs: A Case Study of Transmedial Fairy Tales." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2014. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4319.

Full text
Abstract:
Understanding transmedial storytelling is particularly important to fairy-tale studies. Monomedial views have long been unable to account for all of fairy tale tradition. Although the form originated in oral culture, it has long been a liminal, hybrid form that retains aspects of orality even while its principal mode of transference for some time has been something other than face-to-face communication. Transformations and adaptations across different media and contexts has resulted in a system of fairy-tale tradition that is massively intertextual and transmedial. No one medium can claim primary control over the fairy-tale tradition. Throughout time, oral tellings have inspired literary adaptations; literary renditions have influenced oral and theater performances; oral, print, and theater performances have spawned any number of retellings and adaptations within audiovisual media. This case study, investigates one example of adaptation to social media and integration across media: Tim Manley's satirical blog Fairy Tales for Twenty-somethings and his book Alice in Tumblr-land. In Manley's fairy tale creations, we see an instance of what Henry Jenkins calls convergence culture. This convergence should be of particular interest to folklorists because corporate and mass-media systems continue to influence and integrate with existing forms of interaction. Manley's overall narrative approach integrates two media, which permits him to use fairy tales to express a broader range of narrative impulses than would a project tied to only one medium. Media integration is an important concept to recognize and investigate because so many individuals see different media as inherently combative rather than mutually beneficial systems. Just as intertextuality has become a foundational concept in many humanistic studies, intermediality needs to enter the folklorist's discussions as well. With only some media under consideration, we only get some of the message.

Shaiful, Bahri Radzi. "Malay humorous tales : performance, corpus of oral texts and its study." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2000. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/29573/.

Full text
Abstract:
Like other societies, the Malays enjoy stories which make them laugh. Numerous stories appear and are transmitted by word of mouth when people are gathered at leisure. They bring laughter and joy to teller and audience. The stories usually portray the characters' clumsiness, slow-wittedness, or cunning in their escapades. Up to the present, the subject matter of these stories has never been fully examined. Further studies have mainly focused on the traditional type of humorous tales, their classification, and functions and have based these examinations solely on written texts. This study seeks to investigate the current practice of the performance of humorous tales in Malay society. It will focus on the roles played by the narrator and audience in order to enliven the performance. In this connection, it is essential to look at the background of the storytelling tradition; the whole corpus of the Malay humorous tales : traditional, modem and contemporary type of tales; also other aspects related to the performance ; techniques of delivery, setting, the audience's reception, and the narrator's background (status in the community; personality; level of education; and the way in which they acquired their fund of stories). The introduction of four different types of classification systems - based on themes, heroes, modes of creation; and plots, - shows that the tales consist of a variety of themes; heroes; tales, and actions performed by the heroes respectively. The thematic classification in particular will give an alternative classification scheme which could fit numerous tales that exist in oral form. It also shows why the Malay are fascinated by this kind of tales; who are the butt of humour; why they are targeted; and what laughable actions they perform. The poetic values of Malay humorous tales are evident through their linguistic and literary features. In linguistic terms, the storytellers use colloquial Malay, classical Malay, Malay dialects and some foreign language to execute their repertoire. Literary features take the form of storytelling techniques, which include repetitions, insertion of poetic verses, and shortening phrases. The combination of these linguistic and literary features, reveals that even such colloquial presentation also possesses its own stylized forms of delivery. Discussion of poetics also includes an analysis of the tales' devices of humour and their functions. On the basis of the classification schemes, especially the classification of heroes and plots, it appears that incongruity, ambiguity, absurdity, surprise and a combination of several such elements are the devices of humour that provoke Malays to laughter. Such stories are used to express elements of didacticism in negative terms; for socializing purposes; to represent a form of social and political criticism; to enhance self-respect and arouse a sense of national awareness and integrity.

Keys, Timothy J. "Resolving the paradox of a multicultural society : the use of international folktales for the promotion of multicultural values in the classroom." Thesis, McGill University, 1996. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=26738.

Abstract:
In a multicultural society educators face the problem of identifying and promoting values that help people to interact in a peaceful and just manner. Instead of imposing values through indoctrination educators can promote multicultural values by designing and enacting curricula that help children to self-generate and choose these values.
I have developed a curriculum that uses international folktales to promote multicultural values without imposing them. This thesis is a holistic rendering of theory and practice in respect to the curriculum developed. The theory emphasizes multiculturalism and folktales as children's literature with a brief discussion of values education, qualitative research, anthropology, and curriculum design. The research comprises the procedures, results, and conclusions of a pilot study exploring children's value responses to international folktales and a principal study of teaching the curriculum to a sixth grade class. Through the synthesis of theory and practice a better understanding of multiculturalism emerges along with a researched curriculum.

Stubbs, Estelle Vivien. "A study of the codicology of four early manuscripts of the Canterbury Tales." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2006. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/15177/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of the physical features of the four earliest manuscripts of the Canterbury Tales all dated to the first years after the death of Geoffrey Chaucer. I assess the ways in which codicological examination can contribute to the understanding of a complex textual tradition and inform the study of the text. The thesis is divided into two volumes. The first volume contains the seven chapters which make up the thesis. The first chapter contains a review of the printed editions of the poem since Caxton's first edition of 1476 and a summary of the most important contributions of scholarship in the twentieth century. It reveals that many influential editions and much scholarship on the textual tradition of the poem have been achieved with scant consultation of the extant manuscripts. The second chapter addresses the problems which have arisen as a result of this neglect and offers suggestions for a different approach to manuscript analysis which will be provided as a result of the examination of the manuscripts in the remainder of the thesis. Chapters three to six contain detailed analyses of the four manuscripts in the survey: Aberystwyth, National Library of Wales MS. Peniarth 392D (Hengwrt), Oxford, Corpus Christi College, MS. 198 (Corpus), London, British Library MS. Harley 7334 (Harley 4), and California, San Marino, Huntington Library MS. El. 26 C 9 (Ellesmere). In chapter seven, I summarise the findings and offer suggestions for future research. The second volume contains all the appendices numbered 1-20 followed by 22 Plates. For each manuscript there are four or five separate appendices which provide details of the following: a visual overview, a detailed analysis of individual quires, a list of all rubrics, lines added, omitted or variant in each manuscript, and a list of catchwords.

Ybos, Cynthia. "Barely There Tales: A Phenomenological Study of Stories Told by Pre-service Teachers." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2010. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1240.

Full text
Abstract:
Teacher stories were once relegated to informal gatherings but more recently this aspect of teacher development is being carefully studied in more formalized settings because it is believed to be an important part of teacher development. New ways are being sought to use various aspects of storytelling to help pre-service teachers develop important teaching skills through reflection on experience, dialogue journals, case studies and autobiography. Despite these efforts at the university level, it is especially difficult for pre-service teachers to integrate and apply theories from their methods courses to actual classroom practice. Less effort has been focused on storytelling processes that may occur outside these formal approaches. This study, therefore, looked at how pre-service teachers used stories told in an informal setting to process aspects of learning to teach. This study revealed that pre-service teachers engage in story telling for reasons and in ways that are different from teacher educator intents. Using interviews and private dialogues, patterns of when, how and why six pre-service teachers used oral stories emerged that illuminate challenges to using personal and appropriated stories in coursework. The findings of this study include how oral storytelling is used by pre-service teachers to process emotion and demonstrate specific identities and personal characteristics.

Dong, Shufang. "Fairy Tales and Students' Literacy Learning at Amaze Elementary School| A Case Study." Thesis, University of Rochester, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10927964.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to investigate the meaning of a class of second graders’ fairy tale learning experiences. This study is unique four key reasons. First, it focuses on a group of students whose school has been lagging in state English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency tests; second, it provides perspectives on how fairy tales affect the reading and writing of this group of students; third, it contributes to educational theory in terms of how to understand literacy practices by utilizing sociocultural theories; fourth, it implies that when it comes to educational policy, policy makers and educators should call for attention and efforts to tackle the problem of low ELA proficiency instead of putting students on the front line of low ELA test results and having them suffer the consequences of the outcomes. The current study employs a qualitative case study methodology supported by class observation and its fieldnotes, interviews, and materials that document second-grade students’ fairy tale learning experiences. Grounded theory was used as analytical tool. The study found that students’ fairy tale learning experiences were social practices built up in the community of fairy tale practices learning and expanded the capacities of students’ reading and writing.

McSeveney, Anne-Marie. "Telling tales together : a study of children's collaborative oral story-making and performance." Thesis, Open University, 2010. http://oro.open.ac.uk/54497/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is of relevance to primary teachers, teacher educators and librarians interested in developing storytelling with children. It sets out to establish the key skills involved in the process of children's collaborative creation of stories and in their collaborative performance of these stories for and audience. Children's collaborative story-making and telling was studied in two Scottish primary schools. In one school the context was an after-school storytelling club for children in Primary 3 and 4. In the other school, the context was a series of class storytelling sessions with a composite PS-? class. The research indicates that development of the skills involved in children's collaborative story-making and storytelling are dependent on their previous experience and are also complex and interdependent. It indicates that these skills include: the collaborative skills of creating, understanding and applying ground rules, of turn taking, listening and building on previous contributions; the social skills of interacting with peers and with an audience; the learning skills of memorising and of evaluating their own and others' performances; the linguistic skills of creating a narrative with structure and themes which satisfy an audience, of recognising and using different types of talk in different contexts and of borrowing language appropriately from other contexts; the performance skills of performing a narrative that satisfies an audience, of use of voice and of interaction with an audience.

Full text
Abstract:
Isak Dinesen's Seven Gothic Tales is part of a literary tradition whose most important feature is its subversiveness. This subversion involves supernatural or fantastic elements in the creation of a temporary alternative world. The ensuing struggle between the real and the fantastic worlds is often embodied by a bourgeois heroine and an aristocratic male villain, respectively. The role of the heroine is pivotal to the plot for it is her survival that signals the defeat of a subversive alternative world. But what happens when the villain is a woman? Can her subversion be feminist in nature? The popularity and financial success of women writers of the Gothic means they could not have contradicted dominant views of gender. Yet, Dinesen's fiction demonstrates that subversion is indeed possible. A look at her life and her nonfiction works will facilitate an investigation into the subversive nature of her Gothic tales.

Thomson, Claire Elizabeth. "A transcription and study of British Library MS. Lansdowne 851 of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1998. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.299595.

Full text
Abstract:
British Library MS. Lansdowne 851 has never been viewed as central to the Canterbury Tales tradition and only two hypotheses regarding its priority within the transmission of the poem have ever been proposed: I) that La and Cp shared the same exemplar or sets of exemplars, and 2) that La is a direct copy of Cpo This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive analysis and description of La and to review in detail its relationship to Cp; thereby testing and ascertaining the relative priority of these hypotheses, proposed by Manly and Rickert (1940) and Blake (1985) respectively. To complete a comprehensive analysis of the La manuscript I have transcribed it into electronic format to permit accurate cross-referencing with a base text and other transcribed witnesses; an electronic copy of the transcription is provided with this thesis. A meticulous and exhaustive consultation of the La manuscript itself has also been completed, the detail of which is described within the chapters and appendices of this thesis. Chapter I discusses and reviews the history of Canterbury Tales editions and scholarly attitudes regarding the textual tradition. A thorough description of the La witness is presented in Chapter II. The provenance of La and a reassessment of Manly and Rickert's work in this area is discussed fully in Chapter III. Chapter IV considers the tale order, and major textual omissions and additions of La and Cp, and begins to explore the genesis of the La and Cp text. This is investigated further in Chapter VI by close study of the minor omissions, additions, dialect and spelling, and glosses of the two manuscripts. These chapters yield firm evidence of sufficient detail to test the hypotheses of Blake and Manly and Rickert. Chapter V discusses the inclusion of unique links in La. Chapter VII considers the decoration of La and the plausibility of it having been produced in a commercial scriptoriurn. The Conclusion forms Chapter VIII in which it is established that Blake's hypothesis may be dismissed, and that Manly and Rickert's hypothesis is inconclusive. I have proposed an equally viable conjecture supported by both textual and other evidence, that La and Cp share a common ancestor, the c archetype, but that La was produced by conSUlting an intermediate, and now unknown exemplar.

Abstract:
Much scholarship devoted to the study of the text of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales has focused on the Hengwrt and Ellesmere manuscripts, attempting to reconcile their many differences in the content and presentation of the poem. In concentrating on these two manuscripts, and a small group of other witnesses dated to the first quarter of the fifteenth century, scholars have largely ignored over forty complete manuscripts copied throughout the remainder of the century. Study of the manuscripts has relied on features external to the text of the poem itself in order to chart the development of the tradition, such as the order of tales, while details of text, language and metre have remained relatively unconsidered. The subject of this study is a manuscript that has been neglected by scholars due to its date of copying, c. 1430-50, and certain idiosyncracies in the tale-order. Despite these factors this manuscript contains a text closely related to that of Hg, the earliest extant copy of the poem. In addition to preserving an accurate copy of an early exemplar, Ad3 also shows close links with El, particularly in its ordering of the tales and the inclusion of marginalia. This is therefore an important copy of the poem, highlighting the restrictions and limitations of current attitudes to the textual tradition, and with much to offer as an independent witness to an early exemplar, with unique access to materials used in the production of both Hg and El. This study draws on recent technological developments, such as the availability of electronic versions of Middle English texts and collation software, in order to provide a detailed and comprehensive analysis of Ad3. In addition to this an electronic version of the text is included to enable further research of this kind.

Goode, E. J. "Beyond Persephone : a study of the twice-told tales in Ovid's Fasti and Metamorphoses." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2012. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1367616/.

Full text
Abstract:
There are several narratives told by Ovid in both the Fasti and Metamorphoses and, excluding the rape of Persephone, there has been little or no analysis of them. This thesis is the first focused comparison of all of the twice-told tales in the Metamorphoses and the Fasti. This thesis presents a close-reading of four of the most substantial twice-told tales, the rape of Callisto, the rape of Europa, the apotheosis of Romulus, and the death of Hippolytus. We find that the Metamorphoses and Fasti are woven together with strong invitations to compare between the two texts. Broadly this thesis finds that genre and, in particular, interest in divine action is an important distinguishing feature between the twicetold tales; divine action being present to a greater degree in the Metamorphoses narratives. This thesis then surveys the remaining twice-told tales with an emphasis on their position within the text. Here we find that the twice-told tales are positioned so as to increase the intertextual pull between the Metamorphoses and Fasti. Comparison of the twice-told tales also reveals insights into the individual texts, and in this respect the Fasti, as the lesser investigated of the two texts, particularly benefits. We argue that the twice-told tales in the Fasti reveal that the Fasti is a text characterised by the flux of genre and tone. Sexual comedy, a theme found to be present in several twice-told tales, is an important part of the way the Fasti maintains this flux. Comparison of twice-told narratives is then complemented by a comparison of a non-narrative discourse on animal sacrifice. This thesis demonstrates that comparison of this non-narrative episode is both invited with strong verbal echoes, and reveals useful insights into the two versions. Non-narrative operates in a similar way to narrative in the Metamorphoses and Fasti.

Abstract:
This thesis is on the Canterbury Tales written by Geoffrey Chaucer (1340 – cc. 1400). My main aim is to describe Chaucerian creation in terms of the system-event dialectic as per Bakhtin. According to the Bakhtinian theory, an event takes shape from a system through adherence and departure from that very system. The thesis focuses on three constituents in the production of the Canterbury Tales, namely the interplay between different narrative perspectives, the adaptation of generic conventions and the translation of extracts from a French text. The study opens with a close reading of some extracts of the Tales with a view to circumscribing and defining the narrative perspective(s). The scope of the study then widens by the focus on Chaucer's technique of adaptation of three genres to create an evential text. The three genres in question are confession, sermon and the fabliau. Lastly, I dwell upon sociolinguistics considerations related to Chaucer's translation of some extracts of Jean de Meun's Roman de la Rose. I conclude upon Chaucer's feat in creating an original text within a period where literary themes and techniques limited. Most of all, he uses a linguistic medium which is far from being a firmly established one in literature, that is Middle English

Postcolonial theory has been critiqued for essentializing the North and being too theoretical. Yet it has also been described as essential for the ongoing decolonization of our world. Scholars in a range of disciplines have therefore suggested the need to 'examine specific practices and devises in particular times and places' in order to expose and challenge the ways that certain forms of discourse function to maintain imperialist interests and misrepresentations of Africa in the 'West.' To these ends, this study looks at the construction of early European/American travelers' tales and the experience of study abroad in South Africa as two particular practices that are relevant to the concerns of postcolonialism. While much has been written about each of these phenomena on their own, little has been done to bring them into a conversation with each other. To fill this gap, this dissertation draws on narrative analysis, symbolic convergence theory, discourse analysis and postcolonial theory to explore the dominant narratives that emerge in the pre-trip, embodied trip and post-trip tellings of both types of tales. In order to discover the meaning-making processes of these narratives, qualitative methods were used. Firstly, an extensive literature review was undertaken of early travelers' tales (written between 1600 and 1900), images of Africa in the United States, travel and tourism theory and study abroad literature. Eight focus groups and six one-on-one interviews were then conducted with a total of 36 American students, who were either directly enrolled at the University of Cape Town or participants in the School for International Training (SIT) in Cape Town. These interviews were then followed up with email correspondence once the students had returned home. This study found that while study abroad narratives have enormous potential to challenge the negative and inaccurate stereotypes about Africa in the United States, many strains still exist that mirror the rhetoric of early travelers' tales and promote notions of Africa as 'wild', 'dangerous' and 'underdeveloped' and South Africa as the 'light' version of Africa. However, in contrast to the writers of early travelers' tales, the students who participated in this study demonstrated many more instances of critical self-reflection and desire for change.

In this work we identify the goals and guidelines the National Curriculum Guidelines, the third and fourth cycles, on the study of geometry. We searched on the Biography of Thales of Miletus, where we do a story, and history of the region, the era in which he lived, we count some of their deeds, and enumerate the theorems whose statements are allocated. We analyzed six textbooks in 9th grade of elementary school, comprising the National Plan of Didactic Book 2014, observed how the geometry is crafted, and what activities and statements made with respect to the Thales’ Theorem. We use and recommend the Geogebra software for the study of geometry. We propose diversified activities for use in the classroom when the Thales’ Theorem is working. We suggest a demonstration of Thales’ Theorem, where we use the definition of the triangle area, and properties of the parallelogram.

This project gives an approach of what constitutes the culture and the reasons why international firms, by trying to conquer foreign markets, have to consider it for doing advertising. A literature review and an observation were made in this thesis and the goal is to find out if the culture really matters when doing advertising in a foreign country. This is taking into account Hofstedes dimensions and other factors like traditions, values and language. In this particularly case observation was made by analysis of advertisements in Mexico and in Germany. At the end of the research it is find that Hofstedes cultural dimensions can be also reflected in the commercials. Nevertheless, Individualism and Masculinity are the two mainly dimensions that were observed in the TV spots analyzed. Therefore, Hofstedes dimensions can be very helpful as a basis when an International marketer wants to expand their products and reach markets in other countries..

Since 1990s, a lot of new fairy tale authors revealed their talent. In one of them, Tang Cong, is regarded as one of the representative authors in the field of contemporary fairy tales in Taiwan because she has kept writing in these decades. Her works are much praised neither on quality or quantity. Other authors and she have made much effort on creating novel themes and unconventional subjects. The papers will start from the growth background of Tang Cong, learn the reasons why she engaged in children literature, explore the viewpoint of her creation spirit, and also study on her works by using the methods“ documentary analysis and text analysis” to know the characteristics in three parts of her fairy tale creations from 1988 to June, 2010 which Including contents, characters, and structure. 1. Discussion of the fairy tales contents Tang Cong’s fairy tales mainly deal with life philosophy, and that of “love and care “being the second. These themes are mainly expressed through the dialogue of characters clearly. Most of the subjects are adopted from “social phenomenons”and “life skills and moral”, which obviously come from the real life. It guides children to explore the world and cultivate their ability of daily life. 2. Discussion of the characters in fairy tales. In Tang Cong’s fairy tales, it is the anthropopathic character has been illustrated the most with the personified animals as the main character then the role of ordinary human, both have been largely used than the super hero icon or the talisman character. Although the author hasn’t put a lot of emphasis on both of the above mentioned, yet the presence of the new characters like aliens or tech products have shown how “in-time” Tang Cong’s works could be. In the techniques of characterization, the author has used more on direct characterization over the indirect one yet the alternate application has further evidenced her ability and flexibility in skills. Direct narration by author, Dialogue between characters, Indirect narration by others and Motion have been the four main skills applied the most in her works other than the rest sub-techniques. 3. Discussion of the fairy tales structures. The structure of Tang Cong’s fairy tales could be divided into three parts- introduction, body paragraph, and conclusion. Among the above three mentioned, the introduction and conclusion is well-tailored to match the different age group of the target readers. For example, young children fairy tales focus on being straightforward and integrated; children fairy tales, on the other hand, are more after “performances” such as moves and dialogues, or including additional questions or humors out of the main thread to arouse readers’ aspiration for more when finished. The skills of contrast/comparison and repetition have been largely applied in body paragraph for over quarter of the whole structure respectively. These skills have not only perfectly matched the characteristic of the structure but outstood the story theme, while subverting tradition to stand out from cliché. Among the whole linear structure, fairy tales tend to use more single-story structure than bilinear structure and the former accounts for 56% while 44% for the latter. As the linear structure emphasizes more on positiveness, the highlight on rising action than falling in conclusion part has further proved Tang Cong’s preference on good ending.

ABSTRACT Many people regard fairy tales as the shared memories during childhood. In the serial of stories, people use their imagination and life experiences to construct different dreams and images. In the domain of image art, picture book is part of image, which has its symbolic meaning. Using the symbolic meanings is the most common way to understand the picture books. However, how to use the images to show the significance and its meaning of the picture books worth our careful consideration. Grimms Modern Fairy Tales is the book which has won several international children books prizes and was translated into several foreign languages. It was released by the Grimms culture limited corporation, established in 1993. The current study focuses on the 20 books from Grimms Modern Fairy Tales, narratively analyzing and comparing different plots to explore their symbolic meaning and their narrative structure. From the analyses of characters and images between the original and adapted picture books, this study concluded elements that affect the design of picture books. The result of this study showed that by adapting stories, the overall principles about the design of picture books could be concluded as follows: 1.the transition of different plots, 2. the style and meaning of characters, 3.personal life experiences, and 4. the influences of the viewpoints about the society. The strategy is that we could base on the Grimms Fairy Tales to create better modern fairy tales which accords with the viewpoints about modern society.

Modern images of witches have been simplified to the point where they can be depicted in very few words or a single outline, or even represented by a hat. Witches are among the most traditional images in western art. They originated from the goddess of wisdom in mythology and developed into fairy tales. Witches have evolved into symbols of magic and evil power. As circulating in various texts they have never been absent in the history of art. Through popular prints and art works, the collective imagination of the world's image of witches has been fostered, which has been deeply rooted in western culture. After the 17th century, stories full of magic and fairy fantasies were welcomed by the masses. Fairy tales thus were assembled from folk sources, not only have rich legendary characters but also various exaggerated or marvelous descriptions therein. And witches have common features such as magic power, cruel, brutal or stereotyped as stepmother, even an image of utmost ugliness. Hunting witches in Europe belongs to one period of women's history of persecution, mainly comes from religious conflict, economic change, state power operation, class bias, power dominance and patriarchal social factors such as gender discrimination and misogyny. Although foresaid mechanism left ineffaceable historical marks, witchcraft representation has been recorded and evidenced through different eras, as in medieval and early modern theological books, manuals of hunting witch illustration, paintings and even literary works. The increase of evil witch images in fairy tales is closely related to this historical background. Witch punishment in stories also imitates real historical scenes. With the rise of feminist movement and the awakening of female consciousness in the 20th century, people have realized the deeply rooted patriarchal ideology in traditional fairy tales and its negative impact on children and women. There are many interactions between female characters in classic fairy tales, but their relationship is not harmonious in usual, especially the prevalent conflict between stepmothers and stepdaughters. A Stepmother is often depicted as vicious and mean, with hatred and persecuting children not biologically her own, and such invariable plot might reveal well one apparent prejudice in our secular society.

Folktales crystallize a folk’s living and thinking, while folktales for children form a source of knowledge and pleasure for a folk’s youngsters. Children’s tales, when based on or originated from folktales, re-created under norms and demands of children’s literature, and shared in the same time with characteristics of children’s and folk literature, can flavor our cultural legacies left by ancestors with modern elements, and therefore provide children with more pleasure of reading. This thesis contains contents involving children literature, folklore, and comparative literature. To start with, concepts of folktales, children’s tales, original tales for children, and folktales for children are accounted respectively. After this follows the part of extrinsic study, which begin with an introduction to the object text and then carry on to other intertextual works that are still circulating. Topics and materials of each story from the object text are analyzed in the part of intrinsic research. As for the part of form research, the focus is laid on characterization, structure arrangement, and scenery description. Adaptation techniques can be concluded and a more systematic set of adapting methods formulated through the analysis of the text--in the aim of utilizing these methods as a guide for beginning writers committed to children’s tales, or adopting them as standards in teaching children how to compose an adaptation writing.

This thesis is trying to research Chia Chen Wang’s works based on the background of her growing up, the origin of her writing career, the cultivation of reading with pleasure and her thoughts about creation. As the characteristics of Chia Chen Wang’s creations, I would analyze and conclude the subject genres of her fairy tales, discussing the meanings within the subjects, the presentation of her works, the cogitations of the plots, the writing skills of developing each plot, the cogitations of scenes, the images of characters, how she described each character and the features of characters in the stories, to search for the creating styles of fairy tales in Chia Chen Wang’s works. In short, the subjects in Chia Chen Wang’s fairy tales mainly show the life philosophy. She tried to establish children to have a positive and aggressive value. The plots are mostly used the one-way structure ‘fore-dropping and post-rising’, the plot arrangements tend to emphasize the positive. Each character could solve the problems successfully and get to the perfect endings. The scene architectonic is most based on the factious and fantasy world existed in the reality. The scenes she created include the reality within the real world, the illusory world, even the combination of fake and reality. She has children experience the novelty and delights. The character settings are most the anthropopathic images. She integrated human nature and creatures successfully and conceived relevantly and wonderfully. We could see the originalities and humors within Chia Chen Wang’s works. Chia Chen Wang is good at applying fairy tales to her teaching. She makes efforts for popularizing children’s literature and falls over herself in it. The features in her fairy tales are: clear and definite subjects, aiming at children’s life issues. She makes the vivid and colorful stories, endows with generous the delights of children’s imaginations. The scenes she made are illustrious and factual, building the atmosphere of children’s sights.
