Abstract:
Is there such a thing as a history sculpture ? A comparative essay on the monuments to great men in 19th century France and Italy. Numerous studies have shown the extent to which sculpture, to an even greater degree than painting, was linked to ideologies and therefore to the interpretation of history. To question the validity of the term "history sculpture" can seem incongruous. Yet, public commemorative monuments rarely veer out of the field of portraiture. The present essay seeks to study the motives and consequences of such visual and iconographical choices by focusing on two countries, Italy and France. Both experienced, after 1870, a significant increase in public commemorations, most notably paying tribute to recent events. This paper will more particularly examine the reluctance of representing recent events, the relationship between sculptors, patrons and municipal officials, and the fraught coexistence between effigy and simulacrum in the field of realism.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of the experience and peculiarities of reconciliation of contradictions between Germany and France. The positions of the Presidents of France and Chancellors of the Federal Republic of Germany regarding the theoretical foundations and practical steps of the implementation of French-German reconciliation are studied. This paper deals with the problem of Alsace-Lorraine, a region with a border identity, which repeatedly became the cause of Franco-German disputes and passed from one state to another. The role of the individual in overcoming the contradictions between Germany and France is highlighted. The factor of European integration is considered, which not only contributed to the reconciliation of contradictions between Germany and France, but also turned the two states into leaders of a united Europe. The Elysee Treaty and its implementation were analyzed. The military cooperation between France and Germany is investigated. The problem of historical memory and the desire to reconcile the contradictions between Germany and France are revealed. It is proved that the experience and peculiarities of reconciliation of contradictions between Germany and France testify to the fact that the real reconciliation of the two leading states directed their efforts towards a more global goal – the creation of a common Europe. It was concluded that the mechanisms for achieving Franco-German reconciliation are interesting for studying and borrowing, taking into account national characteristics in the reconciliation of other European countries, and regions with borderline identities. The French-German experience may be useful for application in Polish-Ukrainian relations. The main conclusion from the analysis of the experience and the peculiarities of reconciling the contradictions between Germany and France is that their implementation led to unexpected and far-reaching consequences that once seemed just a dream. At the beginning of European integration in the 50s of the twentieth century, it was difficult to imagine the contemporary EU with its common currency, the Schengen area, developed economy, social programs. Franco-German reconciliation was transformed into the fruitful work of the Franco-German tandem, on the success of which depends not only the future of France and Germany, but the evolution of the entire united Europe.

Abstract:
For the first time in Russian-language historiography on the basis of an analysis of the most important components of Franco-German cooperation in the field of higher education the evolution of cooperation between higher education institutions of France and Germany in the post-war period is presented. The prerequisites for Franco-German cooperation after the Second World War are determined. The evolution of academic mobility between these countries is considered. The results of activities to create equivalents of documents on higher education in France and Germany are revealed. The Franco-German joint institutions of higher education are characterized. The aim of this work is to consider the evolution of cooperation between France and Germany in the field of higher education in the post-war period of time through the prism of its key aspects. The relevance of this study is due to the lack of research on this issue in Russian-language historiography. In addition, the study of Franco-German relations in the field of science and higher education in the post-war period is also of practical importance, since the experience of this cooperation, or its individual aspects, can be used in the field of higher education and science of our state. As a result of the analysis of key aspects of the Franco-German university cooperation, the following stages were identified in bilateral cooperation. 1. Establishment of Franco-German educational cooperation (1949–1963) – a period of post-war contradictions and the emergence of academic mobility between universities in France and Germany. The intensification of Franco-German cooperation in higher education was due to the unfolding Cold War and the ongoing process of European integration: the cultural sphere acted as a means of overcoming Franco-German antagonism. 2. Franco-German cooperation after the conclusion of the Treaty of Elysee (1963 – the end of the 1970s) – a period of expansion of academic mobility and the creation of new tools for its implementation; at the same time, this period of cooperation was marked by a shift in the attention of the governments of France and Germany towards national education issues. 3. The beginning of the process of institutionalization of Franco-German cooperation (late 1970s – 1993). The transition to the third stage of cooperation is due to the emergence of new trends in bilateral educational partnerships: the creation of coordinating institutes and joint educational institutions and the beginning of solving the problem of equivalence of diplomas. 4. The cooperation of France and Germany after the formation of the EU in 1993 – the Franco-German partnership at the present stage and within the European Higher Education Area. The implementation of the provisions of the Bologna Agreement in practice significantly unified the higher education systems of France and Germany, which facilitated bilateral academic exchanges, and the two countries’ participation in European educational programs became an additional incentive for their intensification.

Abstract:
The article examines the evolution of Franco-Spanish relations in the late XVIII – early XIX centuries. The subject of the study is the peculiarities of the development of relations between France and Spain, the analysis of various factors that influenced the diplomacy of the two countries. The object of the study is various treaties, armed conflicts and specific political steps characterizing Franco-Spanish relations. Special attention is paid to the role of the union of the two countries in the confrontation with Great Britain. The purpose of the study is to analyze the causes and consequences of changes in relations between France and Spain in the late XVIII – early XIX centuries. A special role in the evolution of Franco-Spanish relations is noted for the coup d'état of 18 Brumaire in France and the rise to power of Napoleon Bonaparte. The active foreign policy of Napoleonic France eventually resulted in a full-scale war on the Iberian Peninsula. The author uses chronological, historical-comparative and historical-systemic research methods in his work. These methods allowed to analyze the evolution of the Franco-Spanish relations in the late XVIII - early XIX centuries. Periods of military confrontation were interspersed with the time of the union of the two countries. There was a certain duality at the heart of the Franco-Spanish alliance. On an ideological level, most of Spanish society did not accept the ideas of the French Revolution. From an economic point of view, it was not profitable for Spain to enter into the Anglo-French confrontation. Ties with the Spanish colonies were disrupted. From the point of view of European politics, Spain, isolated by its geographical location, did not always benefit from an alliance with France, since it was an unequal partner in it. A special contribution of the author to the study of the topic is the proposed periodization of the history of Franco-Spanish relations of the late XVIII – early XIX centuries, its division into a number of stages. This makes it possible to better structure the work and identify the interrelationship of the changes that determined the nature of Franco-Spanish relations at each stage. The novelty of the research lies in the fact that in this work the evolution of Franco-Spanish relations in the late XVIII – early XIX centuries is considered as a whole and continuous process, the influence of domestic political events on changes in the foreign policy of the two countries is analyzed.

Abstract:
Human Resource Management (HRM) conceptually encompasses policies, practices and systems that influence employee behaviour, attitudes and performance. The comparative research of HRM between France and Egypt, countries from different continents, Europe and Africa, used the literature study method with a descriptive-qualitative approach. The results showed significant differences in HRM practices between the two countries. France has an intuitive recruitment approach with the use of multiple interview methods, while Egypt tends to use internal and informal recruitment. In development, France focuses on internal relations, while Egypt involves government initiatives. Regarding termination of employment, France has a collective policy (RC), while Egypt is unstable in the tourism sector. Performance appraisal in France is subjective, while in Egypt employees care more about procedural justice. The compensation system in France involves fixed and flexible salaries, while Egypt has government regulations. Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) regulations are stricter in France, reflecting cultural and labour law differences. Thus, cultural and legal differences create different frameworks in France and Egypt, influencing the implementation of HRM in each country.

Abstract: In this research we propose to analyze, in an exploratory way, the nine classes taught by Grotowski in the Collège de France, between 1997 and 1998, within the course The organic lineage in the theater and within the ritual. Taking the question of organicity as a lens, we work on a perspective of seeking to understand the processes and notions brought by Grotowski, through the study and analysis of this material, in association with the works developed by scholars of his works. Because they are the latest formulations, the classes taught at the Collège de France are valuable for understanding the work, research and life of the Polish artist

Moore, Charlotte. "Does Childcare Accessibility Encourage Entrepreneurship? A Case Study of France." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2018. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/1128.

Abstract:
Globally, developed economies show the largest gender gaps in entrepreneurial activity. This analysis examines one potential cause of low rates of female entrepreneurship, work-family policies, specifically in France. The objective of this paper is to test whether or not there is a relationship between entrepreneurship and childcare accessibility in France, and if this relationship exists, to learn about its nature. Using data from 2009 to 2013, probit regressions are run for different outcomes of entrepreneurial activity with early childhood care aid eligibility as the explanatory variable of interest. These regressions are run separately for men and women and for the whole sample. This paper does not find conclusive evidence that childcare accessibility significantly affects the probability that one is involved in entrepreneurial activity either for women or for the whole sample. However, it does suggest that if the relationship is significant, childcare aid has a negative impact on the decision for entrepreneurship. Finally, I consider other variables closely correlated with childcare financial aid that may negatively impact involvement in entrepreneurial activity.

Both finance and construction of major projects have dramatically evolved in the past ten years. Technological breakthrough such as computer orientated design, new cements, new machines have led to a more efficient production process. In the mean time, project financing has been greatly advanced and new techniques have appeared. Large and complex projects have started to be partially funded by the private sector as a result of the will to cut public spending. Indeed, States and governments realized that the returns should be taken more seriously in publicly supported infrastructure projects. To make many projects bankable, new mixes of public-private partnership with new financing schemes have been developed. Financial engineers have developed new securities, backed by the future stream of cash flows generated by the project income. Those securities, enhanced by risk-specialized agencies, will maybe constitute a major innovation and will allow financial engineers to access a new set of investors: small bondholders. This thesis is focused on one such scheme: the financing of the Stade de France.

Abstract:

In this paper, we are going to study the relations between France, the European Unionand the Eurozone. The involvements of France in the European Union and the Eurozone aswell as the effects of the European evolutions in France. As France has played many roles indifferent areas for the European Union, the relations are social, political, juridical andobviously economic. We cannot analyse these relations without interest in the historicalpart, which shows the chronological involvements of France in the EU, from the firstagreement in 1951 to the Treaty of Lisbon in December 2009. Beside this, our analyse needsalso to focus on the European Union as several institutions; as well as the Eurozone and itseconomic consequences in Europe and in France. To do so, we are going to raise monetaryand institutional questions and develop the most important European stakes as theenlargements, the European budget, the common policies and the European institutions.France can be considered as a founding father of the European Union, and in spite ofsome difficulties; both France and the European Union have had positive influences on eachother and the European Union could not have grown in this way without France.

Abstract:
To fully understand a technological development one must appreciate social, political and economic factors in addition to the technological components (Hughes, 1991). The systems perspective, asserted by Hughes, implies that technologies cannot be understood in isolation, but only in their contexts, especially in their systemic contexts. This theory is illustrated through an examination of France’s implementation of its nuclear power program in the early 1970’s. Nuclear power provided France with the opportunity to achieve energy independence and, as a result, political control over its energy supply. The scope of this case study is limited to consideration of the socio-technical influences on the rise of nuclear power in France and includes an examination of the technical aspects of the innovation. In considering the socio-technical system encompassing France’s adoption of nuclear power, this case study will contemplate: how France was able to persuade its people to accept nuclear power; what it is about French culture and politics that allowed them to succeed where most other countries have failed; the break throughs that led to the broad commercialisation of nuclear power in France in the 1970’s; and how France achieved its status as one of the world’s top producers of nuclear energy. The time period during which this study is based is limited to the early 1970’s, when France was reliant upon external energy supplies, up until the present day, where nuclear power has become France’s main source of energy, thus contributing to France’s autonomy in terms of its energy supply. This study will not address the issue of nuclear waste or the nuclear power safety debate which is also beyond the scope of this study.

ABSTRACT With the rise of China and the escalation of tension between China and the United States, European countries led by Britain, France and Germany pay increasing attention to the regional situation in the Asia-Pacific (now known as "Indo-Pacific"). Among them, the South China Sea (SCS) is one of the main areas disputed by China, the United States, Southeast Asian countries and some European countries. Western countries are worried that the rise of China's military power will break the stability of the situation in SCS and alter the balance of power among major powers. Therefore, they tried to balance China's rise through alliance. In France's Indo-Pacific strategy, France aims to build a regional order with the alliance of France, India and Australia as the core, and regularly carry out military exercises targeting SCS with the United States, Japan and Southeast Asian countries. This paper aims to study the activities and motivation of France in the South China Sea, and put the situation in SCS under the perspective of Balance of Power Theory, focusing on China, America and France. It will be argued that great powers are carefully maintaining the balance of military power in SCS, and it is highly possible that this trend would still last in the middle and long term, particularly via military deployment and strategic alliances. KEYWORDS: South China Sea, France, China, Balance of Power theory, Indo-Pacific.

Yusgiantoro, Filda C., I. Dewa Made Raditya Margenta, Haryanto Haryanto, and Felicia Grace Utomo. Carbon Tax Implementation in the Energy Sector: A Comparative Study in G20 and ASEAN Member States (AMS). Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center, June 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.33116/br.003.

Full text
Abstract:
1. This report shows that six G20 countries (Japan, South Africa, Argentina, France, Ireland, and Mexico) and one ASEAN Member States (Singapore) have implemented a carbon tax. 2. The energy sector is the primary GHG emissions contributor in most member states, except Indonesia. However, the energy sector in Indonesia will highly contribute to the national GHG emissions considering the rise of energy demand due to economic and population growth. 3. The effectiveness of carbon tax is specific to which sectors are taxed and which sectors are exempt to a country member. Specifically, a higher emissions price may not cover a large share of emissions in the country. The high carbon tax in France only covers 35% of total emissions in its jurisdiction. Meanwhile, Japan and Singapore’s low carbon tax covers 75% and 80% of total emissions in their jurisdiction, respectively. 4. The numbers of sectoral coverage by emissions price will impact the level of revenues generated from the carbon tax. France obtained the most significant carbon tax revenue for more than USD 9.6 billion. Meanwhile, Argentina generated less than USD 1 million, likely due to tax exemptions in natural gas commodities. 5. The contribution level of carbon tax revenue to the government’s total revenue varies for each country. France and Ireland’s carbon tax revenue contributes 0.71% and 0.53% of their total government revenue, respectively. Meanwhile, the rest of the countries’ carbon tax revenue contributed less than 0.3% each to their government revenue.

Abstract:
This report focuses on approximately thirty French markets, contributing to local debates and research as part of the Global Media and Internet Concentration Project (GMICP). It explores the dynamics of diversified economic players in cultural industries (press, audiovisual, books, music), emphasizing the coexistence of 'traditional' and 'new' entrants. The study provides sector-based and global analyses, revealing a dual dynamic of diversification and concentration in the production, distribution, and broadcasting of cultural and information content. Audiovisual content broadcasting, both free and pay, demonstrates national dominance but faces challenges from foreign groups. Financialization and concentration affect media and cultural goods industries, posing risks to diversity of opinion. The dominance of North American groups in digital services, particularly in advertising, is noted, impacting traditional media revenues. Telecom operators lead the French market, with regulators monitoring concentration dynamics for potential negative impacts on diversity.

Barbuscia, Anna, and Chiara Comolli. Gender and socioeconomic inequalities in health and wellbeing across age in France and Switzerland. Verlag der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, June 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1553/populationyearbook2021.res2.2.

Full text
Abstract:
There is increasing evidence that wellbeing is unequally distributed across sociodemographicgroups in contemporary societies. However, less is known about thedivergence across social groups of trajectories of wellbeing across age groups. This issue is of great relevance in contexts characterised by changing populationstructures and growing imbalances across and within generations, and in whichensuring that everyone has the opportunity to have a happy and healthy life courseis a primary welfare goal. In this study, we investigate wellbeing trends in Franceand Switzerland across age, gender, and socioeconomic status groups. We use twohousehold surveys (the Sant´e et Itin´eraires Professionnels and the Swiss HouseholdPanel) to compare the unfolding inequalities in health and wellbeing across agegroups in two rich countries. We view wellbeing as multidimensional, followingthe literature highlighting the importance of considering different dimensions andmeasures of wellbeing. Thus, we investigate a number of outcomes, includingdifferent measures of physical and mental health, as well as of relational wellbeing, using a linear regression model and a linear probability model. Our findings showinteresting country and dimension-specific heterogeneities in the development ofhealth and wellbeing over age. While our results indicate that there are gender andeducational inequalities in both Switzerland and France, and that gender inequalitiesin mental health accumulate with age in both countries, we also find that educationalinequalities in health and wellbeing remain rather stable across age groups.

Abstract:
This is the last version available of this study, in which we will review the water charge experiences in France, Mexico and Brazil. However, prior to country cases, the next chapter sets the theoretical and conceptual boundaries of the study. It will not attempt to propose new analytical insights relevant to economic instruments. Instead it will point out the most important issues brought up in the literature that will be useful to the understanding and the evaluation of the country case. In doing so, it will not only present these theoretical and practical issues but also it will bring in existing experiences that will help to elucidate the discussion. These country reviews were undertaken by local experts and are presented in the following sequence: France in Chapter 3, Mexico in Chapter 4 and Brazil in Chapter 5.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1692, in the context of the Nine Years War (1689-1697), Admiral Tourville’s French fleet faced the Anglo-Dutch alliance along the Norman coast. Five large French men-of-war were reduced to ashes close to Tatihou island in St-Vaast-La Hougue bay (Manche county, France). Discovered in 1985, these shipwrecks have been excavated from 1990 to 1995 by Michel L’Hour and Élisabeth Veyrat, from the Département des Recherches Archéologiques Subaquatiques et Sous-Marines (DRASSM, Ministry of Culture). Among the numerous remains, fish bones were found in large quantities on one of the wrecks. Preliminary studies conducted between 1990 and 1992 by Myriam Sternberg determined that the fish remains were cod (Gadus morhua L.) which were reserved for food aboard. The data recovery during the year 2020-2021 allowed the acquisition of new knowledge on the supplying and the process carried out on this fish.

Lacroix, Aurélien. Crossings of the Sambre: An Archaeological Map of the River in Belgium. Honor Frost Foundation, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.33583/mags2021.04.

Full text
Abstract:
The study focuses on the Belgian part of the Sambre River, between the border with France and its confluence with the Meuse River at Namur. This part was canalized in the 19th and 20th centuries, during which time its length was reduced from 103 to 87.6 km. First, a recovery of its initial length was undertaken, using a Geographic Information System (GIS) and comparing old and current maps. Then, the river crossings (fords, bridges, and ferries) indicated on old military maps from the 17th to the 20th centuries were placed on the proposed restitution.
