Abstract:
This dissertation examines possible differences in media habits and tastes between Christians and non-Christians. The study utilizes data from singles Internet personal advertisements to determine whether or not Christians, especially those with high levels of religiosity or who may be part of the Christian Right, have different television viewing patterns. Three models were developed using multivariate data analysis and logistic regression to examine Christians' television viewing habits regarding reality shows, soap operas, and news. The first model looks at the viewing habits of Christians, the second model examines the viewing habits of Christians attending religious services at least monthly, and the third model analyzes the viewing habits of Christians attending religious services at least monthly and having conservative political views. No significant differences were found in viewing habits between Christians and non-Christians for any of the three models. Although the results of this study cannot be generalized to Christians as a whole, they suggest that Christians in this sample might have adopted secular practices with regard to their television viewing habits.

Du, Plooy Pierre. "A study of fruiting habits in pear trees." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/51626.

Abstract:
Thesis (MScAgric)--University of Stellenbosch, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The understanding of pear branching and bearing habits is required to optimise management practices. The objective of this study was to quantify the branching and bearing habits of pear cultivars under South African conditions of sub-optimal winter chilling. Two-year-old branches of Pyrus communis L. were classified into groups according to the proleptic (from dormant buds) branching habit. In Winter 1998 upright and flat, two-year-old branches were randomly sampled from trees of seven pear cultivars, i.e., Forelle (on Quince A and BPI rootstocks), Abaté Fetel, Flamingo, Packham's Triumph, Golden Russet Bose, Rosemarie and Beurre D'Anjou (all on BPI rootstock). Laterals were classified according to length « lem, 1-5cm, 5-20cm and >20 cm) and position (distal to proximal quadrants on the two-year-old axis). The number of shoots per cm of quadrant length, per length class for each cultivar was subjected to a cluster analysis, then a canonical and a stepwise discriminant analysis. The cultivars were grouped into four groups from Group 1 (Flamingo) which resembles a spurred growth habit with strong apical control, to Group 4 (Packham's Triumph and Golden Russet Bose) which resembles a spreading growth habit and weak apical control. The bearing habits of the same pear cultivars were quantified. In Winter 1998 ten unpruned branches were tagged on trees of each of the seven cultivars. The description started with the development of the main fruiting branch, forming several leaves in the first year of growth (designated year Y), with meristems developing in the leafaxils. In the following season (year Y+1), these axillary meristems have five alternatives: to remain as a latent bud (L), to develop as a vegetative bud (V), to become a flower bud not setting fruit (F), to become a flower bud producing a fruit (P) or to abort and leave a scar (S). Each year the development of these axillary buds were observed and classified anew, giving rise to a sequence. Between 50% ('Forelle/QA') and 75% ('Rosemarie') of buds remained in the growing phase (comprising of V, F or P buds) during the years of monitoring. It was shown that the predominant bud state in the growing phase was V. Although flower formation was low for all cultivars throughout the trial period, 'Packham's Triumph' and 'Rosemarie' displayed a relatively high proportion ofF and P buds in year Y+1. The latter two cultivars also displayed the bourse-over-bourse bearing phenomenon (PP), producing flowers and fruit terminally on bourse shoots. Artificial extinction of reproductive buds was applied in Winter 1999 to individual branches of the pear cultivar Doyenne du Cornice. This pear variety bears on spurs and is prone to biennial bearing. The objective was to reduce the number of growing buds, thereby increasing the allocation of assimilates to remaining reproductive structures. Three thinning intensities, i.e. 0%, 33% and 66% removal of reproductive buds and two methods, i.e. removal of proximal reproductive buds and removal of reproductive buds situated distally on spurs (by means of cutting back) were utilised. Autonomy of fruiting structures was not enhanced, but results warrant the repetition of this trial using whole trees as experimental units.
Tweejaar-oue Pyrus communis L. takke is volgens hul proleptiese (vanuit dormante knoppe) vertakkingswyse in groepe geklassifiseer.

McDougle, Kenny O. (Kenny Odell). "Predicting Academic Achievement from Study Skills Habits among Upward Bound Students." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1989. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc330930/.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem of this study was to determine if study habits can be used to predict academic achievement. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between selected study skill habits and attitudes and achievement of secondary students in English, mathematics, and spelling. The sample for this study consisted of 82 secondary school students participating in Upward Bound programs at two universities in the north Texas area in a six week period during the summer of 1988. Eighteen different high schools were represented in the study. The sizes of the schools ranged from small to very large. Instruments used were the Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes, (SSHA) the Stanford Test of Academic Skills, (TASK), and the Otis-Lennon Mental Abilities Test (OLMAT). The statistical analysis indicated that the four subscores of the SSHA are not accurate predictors of academic achievement. However, some of the correlations among the subscores for the SSHA and the TASK were significant. Most noteable of these were work methods and mathematics, teacher acceptance and mathematics, and work methods and spelling. The recommendation is made that the SSHA should not be used to predict academic achievement in Upward Bound programs. Improving study habits and attitudes should be addressed as a method of refining academic programs, not of predicting academic achievement.

Garcia, Eileen. "Supplemental instruction, study habits, and the community college student." FIU Digital Commons, 2006. https://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3871.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to demonstrate if the academic assistance program Supplemental Instruction (SI) facilitates the acquisition of effective study behaviors through strategies that transcend simple double-exposure to the course material. Its advocates claim it increases academic achievement using learner-centered knowledge and acquisition of effective study behaviors. SI sessions are specifically related to particular courses that students are taking. Sessions are facilitated by the SI leader who has taken the subject matter course in the past. Students review the content of the previous subject matter class using collaborative learning strategies coordinated by a SI leader. In addition, the SI leader models appropriate study behaviors in his or her interactions with the students. An instructor at a large Florida community college who taught five classes of an Anatomy & Physiology I course (traditionally supported by SI) was identified. Two of the classes were randomly selected to participate in SI activities, and two classes were random chosen to participate in alternate, computer-based activities that dealt with the course content, but did not include work in developing students' study behaviors. These treatments were carried out over the course of an entire semester. Participation was mandatory. Data were collected on two variables. Academic achievement in anatomy and physiology content was measured both pre- and post-treatment using an instructor developed examination. Student study behaviors were measured using pre- and post-treatment administration of the Study Behavior Inventory, a valid and reliable instrument that provides scores on three categories of study behaviors: (a) Academic self-efficacy, (b) Preparation for routine academic tasks, and (c) Preparation for long range academic tasks. Measures obtained at the end of the semester of treatment revealed no significant differences between the SI and alternative treatment groups in post-treatment achievement test score and the post-treatment scores on the three study behaviors categories when adjusted for pre-treatment scores. These results suggest that the development of appropriate study behaviors requires more time than SI, as it is now implemented, can provide. In addition, results indicate that improved academic achievement may be attained through any number of means that include repeated exposure to course material.

Carpenter, Robert M. (Robert Marshall). "The Relationship of Self-Concept and Study Habits of At-Risk Students as Measured by the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale and the Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1990. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc331180/.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between self-concept and study habits among different subgroups of 9th grade at-risk students. The study included the administration of two independent measures: The Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale and the Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes. Other data were self-reported by the students. The five subgroups selected in this study were: (1) male and female, (2) white and non-white, (3) socioeconomic groups determined by eligibi1ity in the Free/Reduced Lunch Program, (4) retained and non-retained students, and (5) participants and non-participants in school activities. Raw scores from the self-concept scale and study habits survey were converted into percentile scores. A correlation coefficient was calculated for each subgroup. The significance of the two correlation coefficients was tested using Fisher's Zr transformation. Of the five hypotheses tested at the .05 level, all were rejected. Major findings of the study verify other research regarding characteristics of at-risk students. Also, more than half of the subjects had deficient study habits but only a small percentage (19,5V#) had signif icant ly low self-concept scores. In addition, at-risk students who participate in school activities had higher self-concept scores and study habits scores than non-participating at-risk students. It was concluded that low self-concept does not appear to be as significant a factor of students being at risk as does their poor study habits. Recommendations were made to encourage school districts to include self-concept and study habit evaluations for at-risk students and to involve more at-risk students in school activities.

There are a number of factors that influence an individual's ability to design. Designers vary by characteristics of their designs. Some product designers may be very practical, while others attempt to induce surprise and delight in their target user. Even when selecting what design to move forward with, designers' personalities and their classification as either satisfiers or maximizers greatly impacts their final designs. We surveyed a number of students from MIT class 2.97, Designing for People, in order to gauge their design habits. The data we extracted provided us with information on their design experience and comfort, their attitudes towards surprising designs, and their characterization as satisfiers or maximizers. Due to the relatively small sample size, we did not find any overarching trends, but the results do establish some correlations between self-reported confidence in personal designs and their potential to surprise the user.

Prescott, Margaret Mary. "Food and work : a sociological study of the eating habits of shiftworkers." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2003. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20785/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a sociological study of the eating habits of shiftworkers. It explores the relationship of male and female shiftworkers to food purchase, food preparation and food consumption in the home and at their place of work. This included exploration of the interaction of attitudes and beliefs about food and health on shiftworkers' diets and patterns of eating, and their perceptions of the influence of shiftworking on food consumption and eating patterns. The research used a mixed methods approach and collected both quantitative and qualitative data; two workplaces were observed, 120 shiftworkers responded to a self-completion questionnaire and 43 semi-structured interviews were conducted with a sub-sample of shiftworkers employed in a variety of industries in Sheffield. A critical review of the background academic literature also informed the study. Quantitative data was analysed to provide a description of the facilities available to obtain food at work and the patterns of eating of shiftworkers on their last working and last non-working day. A typology of eating patterns, and profiles of the eating patterns types which were more associated with various groups of shiftworkers, were also developed through analysis of the data. Qualitative analysis explored the interaction of attitudes and beliefs about food and eating on shiftworkers' diets and patterns of eating both at home and at work, and their perceptions of the factors influencing their eating patterns. Conceptions of the 'proper' meal and 'family' meal were important influences, particularly on female shiftworkers' ideas of appropriate patterns of eating in the home. Factors within the workplace also constrained shiftworkers' eating patterns at work; notably the facilities available to obtain food at work; formal rules and regulations within the workplace; the organisation of the labour process, and informal social norms relating to uses of food. Gender appeared as an important influence on the relationship of male and female shiftworkers to food and eating. The study explored gender divisions of labour in foodwork in shiftworkers' households and found that female shiftworkers were primarily responsible for food purchase and preparation. The study found shiftworkers were dissatisfied with their eating patterns at work and at home as a result of what they perceived to be the constraints of shiftwork. The study contributes to increasing theoretical and practical understanding of the social influences on food purchase, preparation and consumption at home and at work.

Merrington, David John. "The tripod in the dunny : a study of Patrick White's sylleptic habits." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/21973.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a study of relations between aspects of Patrick White's prose style and his perception of a moral equivocation that is entailed in the construction of identity and in the making of fiction. Chapter One presents examples of White's sylleptic style. The virtuosity of the figure is seen to reflect the discursive puissance of a detached and ironic narrative stance. His habitually ironic perspective is ascribed to his apparent sense that human life is governed by fiction, and that such governance is morally equivocal. The chapter concludes with the specification of gossip as a malicious social discourse which, for White, also reflects the practice of narrative fiction. In Chapter Two the analogy between fiction and gossip is developed. The discourse of repute is seen to exercise a perverse and vicarious dominance over its object. This governance by a morally equivocal discourse is considered to illustrate White's habitual apprehension of a universally ironic dispensation under which the human subject exists. The role and the conduct of authorship is examined as the "voice" which governs and articulates such a dispensation. Aspects of M.M. Bakhtin's theory of carnival are adduced, in Chapter Three, to the analysis of-narrative irony. The figure of syllepsis is considered as a stylistic formula for the carnivalesque. The concept of a reactionary "counter-carnival" is formulated, and is used to examine the equivocal energies of White's ironic dispensation. Chapter Four focuses on the carnivalesque dialectic between the orthodox and the grotesque "other". "Illicit knowledge" of the grotesque is seen to be cognate with the discourse of repute and gossip, and the artist is found to be guilty of vicarious appropriations. Chapter Five is an extended analysis of The Twyborn Affair as White's allegory 'of fiction. The chapter is in two parts: the first focuses on the discursive means by which the· fiction of "Eudoxia Vatatzes" is constructed. The flaws in such "authorship" are examined, and this "text" is seen to be a vulnerable and unreliable narrative structure. The second part traces the development of Eddie Twyborn as a fictional "text", through his personae as a jackeroo and as Eadith Trist the brothelkeeper. The Coda comprises brief illustrations, from Three Uneasy Pieces, of Patrick White's last thoughts on authorship.

Abstract:
Under favourable conditions, the child in the senior primary phase (from Grade 5 to Grade 7) should lead a happy and carefree life with few real problems for himlherself or his parents. At this time the child is at his/her most receptive stage, therefore it is very important that the child should acquire good study habits, study attitudes and study methods. Attitude plays a very important role in learning. If the child has a negative attitude towards study, his academic achievement will not be as desired. The child who has a negative attitude also has a negative or poor self esteem. It is important to lead the child in the senior primary phase to develop and adopt a positive attitude and self esteem. The aim for this study is to determine whether the pupils (learners) in the senior primary phase will develop a positive disposition towards learning if they are given guidance. The characteristics of the senior primary child in relation with his physical, social, emotional, moral and personal development is closely scrutenised. The focus is on study attitude and the factors that would influence it such as language, stress, self esteem, hereditary, abilities and environment. Thus the study guidance program for the child in the senior primary phase with a negative study attitude has been set out comprehensively. The focus fell upon study guidelines for study guidance in the form of group guidance and the ten sessions into which the study guidance program was set out. The study guidance program consisted of orientation of the group, aims or objectives, study attitude, self esteem, study habits, study methods, facors which influence learning, facets of the memory, attention and concentration, compiling a works program and study roster, motivation, listening, effective reading, memory aids, memorising, summarising, underlining and preparation and writing of the examination. During the empirical investigation the following steps were followed: • The school guidance teacher selected fifteen pupils (learners) from the senior primary phase (grade 6) who showed a negative study attitude. • Questionnaires about study habits, study attitudes and study methods were completed by the group before and after the study guidance program. The pupils also had to write a General Science test before and after the study guidance. The results of the General Science Tests before and after the study guidance, were compared with each other. The presentation and interpretation of the response of the questionnaire about study methods, study attitudes and study habits regarding the General Science test marks were recorded. The test marks before and after were compared. Furthermore, from the examination it came to light that the questions in the questionnaire showed a marked changed namely a great effect (0,8) except in questions 41, 46 and 49 which showed a medium effect. This improvement or change in the Science Test marks are thus educationally viable. As a result of the positive change in the questionnaire's response and the General Science test marks, it appears that the program was successful. It also shows that a study guidance program can play an important role in cases where the Senior Primary pupil (learner) has a negative study attitude. There is a definite yearning by the child in the senor primary phase to be guided during learning and thus being influenced positively. Guidance implies assistance, Le. during learning/study the child must be assisted so that learning can be effective and the potential of the child be optimally unfolded or developed. If the child's potential is optimally developed, the child will become a happy adult who will be an asset to him/herself and to the community.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to explore the relationship between students’ reading habits, the reading habits of their home-environment, and how these are perceived to relate to the literary practices of the school. This study examines the reading habits of 14 students at an upper secondary school in Stockholm, Sweden, and Skolverket’s proposed methods of developing reading-skills among students. The data was empirically gathered through qualitative interviews with students enrolled in the course English 7. The results show that while the students do read frequently, and a variety of different text-types, they do not perceive their reading habits to be beneficial to their schoolwork. There is a clear disassociation in students’ minds in regards to the reading that they undertake as part of their daily routine and that which they engage in at school. The results indicate a need for further studies on the subject due to the small scope of the gathered data.

Abstract:
Earning a college degree yields many benefits. In addition to an increased income, college degree earners generally have greater job satisfaction, make healthier life choices, are better communicators, and have greater social mobility. Even with all of these benefits, however, some colleges are seeing graduation rates as low as 32%. One of the greatest contributing factors affecting the dropout rate of undergraduate college students is poor academic performance in their courses. In this study, we sought to identify several academic resources, study behaviors, academic self-confidence scores, and demographic information to assess what types of behaviors and resources may lead to higher academic performance. There were 148 undergraduate student participants, out of 696 possible students (21.3%), from three sections of Introductory Psychology courses at Utah State University. They participated in a multi-phase survey to assess study habits, and resources that they used when preparing for their psychology course exams. Statistical analyses identified several significant differences between men and women, and between first generation and non-first-generation students. Women studied almost twice as much, compared to men, in terms of hours spent, and course content covered. Academically, first-generation students struggled in almost every way, compared to non-first-generation students. After identifying how the study behavior and resource variables influenced each other, we also identified which variables were the most influential on the students’ final course grades. We found that a student’s GPA (grade point average) was the most important factor, followed by their self-confidence in their academic abilities, followed by their class attendance, followed by how many hours they work outside of school. All of those variables likely affect a student’s final grade, and it is important that college students are informed about which study resources and behaviors they should utilize, to be as successful as possible.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to investigate how participation and racing in ultra-endurance events contribute to an executive's self-leadership habits. Some research indicates that physical fitness is a key component of an executive's program (e.g., Neck, Mitchell, Manz, Cooper and Thompson, 2000; Neck and Houghton, 2006; Lovelace, Manz, and Alves, 2007; Moore, 2015, Manz, 2015). However, much of this research reflects approximately one hour of physical fitness work per day, five to seven days a week. Scant research exists on how extreme levels of exercise (i.e., 18–30 hours per week) can contribute to successful self-leadership. Some research indicates that participation in ultra-endurance sports increases self-efficacy (e.g., Simpson et al., 2014). Likewise, a growing body of research (e.g., Baker, 2015; Simpson et al., 2014) shows that ultra-endurance athletes commonly apply constructive thought patterns, behavioral strategies and natural rewards strategies synonymous with the self-leadership literature without realizing it. This study will investigate how an ultra-endurance athlete develops self-leadership habits through the formative experience of ultra-endurance racing and how he/she applies these habits away from racing. Furthermore, this study intends to lay the foundation for the creation of a prescriptive theory of self-leadership habit building that other executive leaders can apply to their own lives.

Ngomani, Noluyolo. "Radio convergence: young people's radio listening habits in Cape Town - a comparative study." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/27922.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore young people's radio listening habits in a time of radio convergence in South Africa. This study explores how the radio listening practices of youth studying and living in a township, for example Khayelitsha, differ from the practices of those who attend school in an urban area, for example Rondebosch, and acknowledging the University of Cape Town as a 'grey area' where diverse youth come together, by comparing Humanities and Science students. Drawing on Bourdieu's theories of capital, the study argues that various issues related to Internet access in South Africa, including communicative ecology, the historical background, and 'cultural capital' (Bourdieu, 1986; 1990), make the radio listening experience different for different groups, and strongly influence young people's radio listening habits. This argument is contextualized in relation to radio convergence which is seen through the use of social networking sites by radio stations, young people and people at large, and focusing especially on the growth of online-only radio with evidence of it being accessible to those that have access to the Internet. Furthermore, this study used both quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate the uses and gratifications as well as the social and individualistic act of radio listening, and the phenomenon of online-only radio. This study analyses the online radio stations Assembly Radio, CliffCentral and Ballz Visual Radio as case studies to show the dynamics of this medium, specifically highlighting programming, revenue, access to stations, and the reasoning behind their conception. In conclusion, the study argues that radio convergence should not be viewed as an erosion of the nature of traditional radio, but rather argues for convergence as an extension of the medium.

Abstract:
Ilar A. Students´ experience of responsibility for friends´ alcohol habits- a qualitative study at Campus Helsingborg. Bachelor thesis. Program in Public Health. Faculty of Health and Occupational Studies, University of Gävle; 2011.   The aim of this study was to explore students’ experience of responsibility for friends´ alcohol habits, using a qualitative method. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 16 students at Campus Helsingborg and the transcriptions were analyzed using content analysis. The findings suggested that the majority (62,5 %) of the participants felt a responsibility for their friends´ alcohol habits in contexts where alcohol was consumed. Responsibility was most often built on reciprocity in the friendship and the fact that they cared about each other not to end up in harmful situations. Perceiving a responsibility did not seem to be associated with taking responsibility to help, thus helping was rather linked to how well they knew each other, if they themselves were under the influence of alcohol and the severity of the situation. Further research is needed to understand students´ experiences of responsibility for friends´ alcohol habits in other contexts. These studies would provide more information to health policy makers and Student Health Service workers as they attempt to reduce alcohol-related health problems in Swedish Universities and colleges.

No Alvão/Padrela, Peneda/Gerês e Sul do Douro há grande dependência do lobo ao gado; Study of Iberian wolf food habits in Trás-os-Montes, Portugal: Present and Past Abstract: The main difficulty for wolf conservation is the human conflicts due to predation on livestock. The study of wolf food habits is important to understand the variation of wolf prey in different areas. Our study areas were Natural Park of Alvão and Natural Park of Montesinho. The study of the different wolf prey in these areas was based on scats. To evaluate the temporal variation of wolf diet, we reviewed studies from 1977 to 2017. The results show a different type wolf prey: in Alvão, with great human pressure, wolves depend on livestock. While in Montesinho wolf feeds on natural prey. Over time the diet has change in Bragança (from domestic to wild ungulates). While in other areas didn’t change. Abstract:
Objective: To examine associations between eating disorder (ED) risk and dietary habits. Also, to determine if ED risk changes after exposure to nutrition education and to investigate how the dietary habits in both at-risk (AR) and not-at-risk (NAR) college students compare the Dietary Guidelines (DG). Design: A longitudinal observational study over one academic year. Self-reported dietary intake was collected via seven-day food records. The Eating Attitudes Test 26 (EAT-26) was used to assess ED risk. Subjects underwent measurements of height, weight, skin fold, waist circumference and hip circumference. Subjects/Setting: Data from 507 students enrolled in one of two fall 2005 nutrition/health courses at a land grant university in southwest Virginia were analyzed. Main Outcome Measures: ED risk, mean daily intake of fruits, vegetables, fiber, whole grains, protein, total calories, and changes in ED risk over one academic year. BMI, weight change, percent body fat, and waist circumference were also evaluated. Statistical Analysis Performed: Associations between ED risk and mean daily intake of dietary variables were assessed using independent samples t-tests (p<0.05). Changes in mean EAT-26 scores were assessed using paired-t tests. Changes in the proportion of subjects categorized as AR and NAR were evaluated using Chi-square analysis. Results: This study was completed by 192 subjects. Those AR consumed significantly fewer calories than NAR subjects in both September. In April, AR subjects consumed significantly fewer fried vegetable servings than NAR subjects. Chi-square analysis in April revealed that the size of the NAR group increased thus reducing the size of the AR group. Overall, subjectsâ diets failed to meet the DG for fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and dietary fiber. Conclusion: Overall dietary intake did not vary significantly between AR and NAR subjects, excepting lower caloric intake and fewer fried vegetable servings in those AR. Both groups failed to meet the DG for fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dietary fiber. Application: Educational interventions emphasizing the DG may improve ED risk but warrant more specific targeting of poor dietary habits in order to increase the college populationâ s compliance with the DG.

The objectives of this study were to explore whether a significant relationship exists between study habits, study attitudes, academic locus of control and academic results in a group of learning disabled adolescents. In order to investigate this relationship, all of the grade 8 students at a remedial high school were required to complete the Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes, as well as the Intellectual Achievement Responsibility Scale. Rank order correlations on the above variables yielded significant relationships between study habits and study attitudes, study habits and locus of control, study attitudes and locus of control, study attitudes and academic results and locus of control and academic results. Implications of these findings are discussed, as well as their significance in designing intervention programmes for learning disabled adolescents.

Brown, C. W. "Household dust and respiratory allergy : a study of household dust exposure and respiratory allergy in UK households." Thesis, University of Surrey, 2000. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/843797/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is designed to explore the hypothesis that settled dust in a domestic environment can contain significant levels of allergens and that common cleaning methods employed to remove dust can result in sufficient airborne exposure to potentially trigger an allergic reaction. Qualitative feedback from respondents in studies of furniture dusting habits indicated that household furniture dusting could elicit an allergic response. A consumer questionnaire was fielded to confirm the problem and it's magnitude. This indicated that it affected approximately 20% of allergy sufferers (or approximately 5% of the total UK population). Further work was performed to estimate the level of allergen exposure during dusting. Additional consumer research was fielded to ascertain the surface area being dusted, (approximately 54000cm2 for frequently dusted areas and 10000cm2 for frequently dusted areas). Domestic dusting habits were probed for the relative frequency of dusting method, which split evenly between dry dusting, wet dusting with water and wet dusting with a furniture polish. Surface sampling techniques were adapted to make in-home measurements of the rate of dust settling which was found to be approximately 3.19x10 -7 g.cm-2,day-1. In-home sampling was also undertaken to measure the mean allergen content of surface dust for major allergens, yielding 24667ng.g-1 combined dust mite, 47696ng.g-1 Fel d 1 and approximately 126 8 08ng.g-1 Can f 1. Laboratory-based studies determined the relative amount of dust rendered airborne during dusting of different furniture surface types and comparing different cleaning methods. This was found to be between 2.3- 43.0%. From these experiments, a model "average" home was constructed and used to estimate the exposure towards dust allergens during a typical dusting task. Exposure was estimated to be as much as 16500ng total dust mite, 124000 mug (31000 mU) cat allergen and 275000 ng (IU) dog allergen per dusting method. These results indicated that allergen exposure, under certain circumstances, could exceed the threshold levels that have been proposed for the onset of sensitisation.

Abstract:
Seabirds are often used as indicator species for changes in marine ecosystems due to the species visibility and sensitivity to changing conditions, such as changes in prey abundance. They often reside in habitats affected by anthropogenic impacts such as large-scale fisheries and pollution. Understanding the connection between seabirds and their surrounding environment can give us important insight about the ecology of the ocean and how anthropogenic pressures affects it. Studying feeding habits, and foraging behavior especially, is useful for understanding seabird´s responses to changing environments. Feeding studies are commonly used in seabird monitoring and requires a lot of time and resources. Monitoring of seabirds are also logistically challenging, and the risk of disturbing bird colonies must be considered. It can be especially complicated when studying cliff nesting seabirds such as the common murre, Uria aalge, the study species for this thesis. Photography as a method for monitoring seabirds may limit the need of people on site, hence minimize disturbance and save time and resources. This study provides insight in whether it is a viable option to use photography instead of on-site field studies when monitoring sea birds. This was accomplished by installing cameras and monitor a feeding study at Stora Karlsö, Sweden, parallel with performing the usual monitoring in the field. This thesis makes it clear that a camera study very well could replace the field study without any larger concerns, although, improvements need to be considered if the study is to maintain a high quality and for results to be reliable.

Abstract:
For musicians of all kinds, practice is an essential component in establishing and refining their skills. How a musician learns the art of practicing, and at what point in their musical and cognitive development can vary drastically. The purpose of this research is to understand how two groups of musicians, undergraduate vocal performance majors and undergraduate piano performance majors, developed (or consequently failed to develop) their respective knowledge pertaining to effective practice prior to entering the university setting, and how their practice habits changed (or consequently failed to change) after beginning study with a university instructor. This is accomplished by comparing the practice habits of the two groups prior to entering the university setting, and, after gaining admission into the degree program. Findings are supplemented with recent research pertaining to the study of learning and various types of practice.
