Bibliography is the key to open human knowledge. It not only plays a supporting role for library services but also strengthens the study in human behavior for document research. Bibliographic control is a comprehensive bibliographic record which preserves various types of information systematically in order to let users search for academic research easily. The purpose of bibliographic control is not just how to manage and transfer the data. The bottom line is it how to make user to obtain the required data source quickly and effectively through a variety of methods. Despite the wide range of codified bibliography, this thesis focus on the linguistics and literature subject bibliography, history subject bibliography, philosophy and Chinese classic subject bibliography since 1945 Taiwan Recovery Period. The author gives the description and review on each title, especially on its character and history. Special bibliography regarding literature, history and philosophy are classified and discussed in different catalogs in this thesis as follows, bibliography of bibliographies and series bibliography, rare books and general of the wire-bound bibliography, catalog of collections, bibliography of works of one person, Tunhuang bibliography and humanities books and periodical indexes. Recent twenty to thirty years, electronic bibliographic database is a growing trend; therefore, another chapter is included for analysis of Taiwan humanities bibliographic database. The author tries to demonstrate a whole picture of Taiwan humanities subject bibliography during past six decades. At conclusion, the author not only summarizes the different character and advantage/disadvantage among various stages of humanities bibliography on bibliographic control from Taiwan Recovery Period till now, but also has recommended directions for further research.

Despite the considerable bibliographic compilation of Weng Fang-Gang, previous researchers fail to study him at the perspectives of bibliography. Thus, this paper aims to inquire him at such perspectives and further explores theory and practice available to bibliographic researchers by realizing his ideas on literature via his works. In particular, the author attempts to suggest new thoughts as academic references in terms of significance of literature and bibliography. The compilation of Si Ku Quan Su by Weng was pretty impressive; therefore, a lot of sections of this paper discuss the historical facts and details. Also, Weng’s motivation and views on literature are compared and responded. Also, his attitude to Si Ku Quan Su is inferred under how he discussed it in terms of texts or materials. The understanding of Weng’s theory of bibliography evidences that he was good at poetry, calligraphy and classics and how he related with literature. This paper employs bibliography as the core to comprehend the object of his wisdoms in order to master precisely and accurately the aim thereof. All his wisdoms relate closely to his insistence on firming his wisdoms by literature as a footstone. This paper is organized in 3 parts consisting of 8 chapters as follows: a. the introduction and the conclusion present theory in details, which demonstrate the author’s discourse as well as views on literature; b. the review of Weng Feng-Gang as the entity of his biography and academic object; and c. Weng’s compilations of bibliography and his performance in terms of 5 chapters: bibliography, edition, emendation, bibliotics and epigraphy.

You Mao, also known as Yen Chi, is one of the “Four Great Poets of Rehabilitation” in the South-Song Dynasty. His poetries played a vital role in that era, however, most of his poetries and articles were destroyed in a fire incidence, which occurred in the first year of Ching Yuan. The dramatic loss of his poetries is one of the main reasons why later generations barely mention his poetries. Most of the private cataloged collections of books in Song Dynasty doesn’t exist anymore. Nowadays, only three catalogs of them are available: “Jun Zhai Bibliographic Guide” edited by Chao Gong-Wu, “Sui Chu-Tang Bibliography” edited by You Mao, and “Problem-solving of Zhi Zhai Bibliography” by Chan Zhen-Sun. Among those three editors, You Mao is the pioneer for bibliography. Unfortunately, there is no literature available about the bibliography of You Mao. The main reason of unawareness about you-mao's creation were accidental loss of the literature and improper referencing in “Sui Chu-Tang Bibliography. For the other two editors, a monograph of studied on the bibliography of Chao Gong-Wu is available as “Chao Gong-Wu and his Jun Zhai Bibliographic Guide” published by Liu Chao-Yu, and another monograph studying Chen ZhenSun is available as, “Chen Zhen-Sun and the Research on his publications” published by Ho kwong-yim. You Mao had extensively and innovatively disscussed the bibliography, which had a great impact on later generations. Hope this study will help us understand more about You Mao and his “Sui Chu-Tang Bibliography”. In order to understand more about You Mao’s life, this study was based on the biography of You Mao in “History of Song” and You Yi’s “Chit-chat by Million Willows Creek” and others articles, such as “The Collation and Research of the Compilation of Song's Regulations”, “The Southern Song Dynasty's 'Guan Ge' record”, “Liang Yue Unpublished Manuscripts”, Yang Wan-li’s “Cheng Jhai Anthology” , and “Sui Chu-Tang Bibliography”. This thesis was divided into six chapters: the first chapter is introduction, which shows the motive and objective of this topic. The pedigree of You Mao’s family, the background of his family, and some records of important characters in his family were presented in chapter two. The chapter three is about the background of You Mao, indicated on yearly basis with further details of his social activities and his publications. The chapter four is the main part of this thesis. Futher investigation of “Sui Chu-Tang Bibliography” and the background, writing and features of this book have been elaborated in this chapter. The main character of “Sui Chu-Tang Bibliography” is the detail records of different versions of books according to different dynasties. The chapter five illustrates the influence and impact of “edition index” of You Mao on later generations. The last chapter is overall conclusion and some field investigation results, such as pictures of You Mao’s house and his tombstone. The literatures of You Mao have mostly vansihed and are un-recognized, however, the “edition” method of biblography used in his “Sui Chu-Tang Bibliography” is not only an innovative method of biblography, but also brought the attention of following generations.

Fu Zeng-Xiang (1872-1949), a bibliographer born in Jiang An Si Chuan, is famous for his achievement in bibliography, edition and textual criticism. Fu searched and rushed for books all his life with great devotion and thus he had a fabulous book collection. The collection is amazing both in quality and quantity amounted more than 200 thousand volumes. Within his abundant possession, there are engraving editions produced in Song, Jin, and Yuan Dynasty, refined engraving, refined proofreading, archaic transcripts and precious books from Ming and Qing Dynasty. Following four great bibliographers in late Qing Dynasty, Fu scaffolded criteria in bibliography for modern researchers. Fu is also a copious writer. His Inscription on Books in Recluse Garden; A Review of Books in Recluse Garden and Bibliography of Amending Shao Ting Legacies in Recluse Garden are essence of his accomplishments in Ancient Bibliography. Though in Taiwan and China, lots of articles and theses were conducted to this great scholar and his masterpiece, yet none of them applied the method of constructional analysis to do the research. With the view of better understanding how Fu constructed his approaches to ancient bibliography, this study elaborates the processes step by step to acquire the appreciation to this scholar. This thesis consists of seven chapters. Chapter One is Introduction, involved research motivation, purpose, comparisons and discussions. Chapter Two presents Fu’s causes and principles in Ancient Bibliography while establishing. In this chapter, three subtitles respectively show history background, Fu’s social connections and the results of the application afterwards. Chapter Three outlines Fu’s dedication in editions, how he verified the originals, and what his attitude and spirit was in proofreading ancient books. Chapter Four depicts the contents of Fu’s construction, his inheritance, his opinions toward ancient bibliography as well as his assertion of ancient version value from those of forgeries. Chapter Five focuses on Fu’s three significant categorizing methods with which Fu enabled himself to distinguish the ancient bibliography. Some illustrations are offered in compliance to help systematically tease these methods in application. Chapter Six evaluates Fu’s influences and achievements in academic contribution. Chapter Seven, the last chapter, poses the conclusion of all my comprehension by studying the brilliant scholar Fu Zeng-Xiang.

“The Leishuo” is a collection of short stories (the Miscellaneous writings), compiled by Zeng Zao in the Song Dynasty. Over two hundred and sixty notes and fiction from before the Qin Dynasty to the early Nan Song period were included in “The Leishuo” in which many of lost books after the Song Dynasty were cited. Scholars believe through the citation of “The Leishuo” they can have a glimpse of ancient books appearance and bring a new topic for academic research. “Sikuquanshuzongmutiyao” says “There are many ancient books at the beginning of Nan Song, Zeng Zao has the ability to appreciate them. Therefore, the lost and rare books in “The Leishuo” are informative. ” One of the features of “The Leishuo” is collection of the lost texts, which offers a great help in study of ancient literature. The topic of this paper is to study on the versions and the cited bibliography of “The Leishuo” written by Zeng Zao. However, the most common version- Ming Dynasty Tien-Chi edition is not the original edition of “The Leishuo”. By examining other versions, we can see the number of volumes, cited books, and texts are different in many ways. In this paper, description of the author's life and writings is firstly introduced, and explanation on the historical and cultural background comes next. Furthermore, the format in its compilation and printing are stated. In order to collect various versions of “The Leishuo”, I don't only read the domestic collection of rare books, but also read the existing hand-written books by visiting Peking University Library, National Library of China, National Science Library, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Library, Nanjing Library, Seikado Bunko Library. Then clarified the similarities and differences between versions, analyzed the origins of versions. I decided to use the Shanghai Library's collection of 50-volume hand-written book in the Qing Dynasty as the master copy. The purpose of this paper is to analyze each entry of “The Leishuo” and study the lost texts with supplement of Ancient Series, Genus-book(Encyclopedias), notes, fiction and other related materials. Finally, explore the value of “The Leishuo” in Chinese literature, of the impact on the later redaction, and review the drawbacks of codification. By revealing the overall appearance “The Leishuo”, I hope this book can be used in academic research appropriately as a valued tool in the future.

The use of the methods and content of Bibliographic description is the fastest way to understand the content of books. However, there are different. In ancient China, the contents of catalogs varied; some were complex and come were simple. In ancient China, people mainly focused on classification instead of cataloging. There were few available publications about cataloging. The purpose of this study is to describe the development of the cataloging of books in ancient China and to compare early cataloging with today’s development of bibliographic cataloging, to thus understand the evolution and content of Chinese Bibliographic description in order to discuss ancient and present Chinese bibliographic description, and to analyze existing bibliographic description similarities and differences from ancient times to the present. In the conclusion we have given both an analysis of the development of Chinese Bibliographic description and some proposals for its future development.

The research aims to observe the bibliographic coupling (BC) of patent citations. Usually, we use a fixed bibliographic coupling strength (BCS) as the threshold when analyzing bibliographic coupling pair (BC pair). In this research, we find out that the time differences between BC pairs would affect the strength of BCS. This study selects the United States patents in the field of carbon dioxide capture, storage, recovery, delivery, regeneration and collects, with a total number of 34,813 patents. With these patents, we acquire 155,076 pairs of DC and 1,609,549 pairs of BC. After that, we do BC time characteristic research on the forgoing data, in order to analyze in what condition would a BC pair be formed and what effect would it do to the BCS. In this research, using the time difference obtained by subtracting the earliest published patent’s publishing date with the earlier published patent’s publishing date in BC pairs, we analyze it with the annually publishing amount of patents. We have observed that the larger the time span of publishing date in the BC pair is, the more the patent accumulates. This way, the more the patents that can be co-referenced by the BC pair, the more the chance the BCS being higher. However, in previous researches, when using a constant as the threshold of the BCS, it would cause the BC pairs with smaller time differences to have an inborn smaller BCS, because of the lack of patents able to be referenced, and causing those patent precluded from the following analysis. The research provides a determination of BCS standard, which is different from the past researches using a constant threshold to determine the BCS of BC pairs. The research uses polynomial trend lines to provide different thresholds for BC pairs with different time differences. Thus, doing so may avoid the BC pairs precluded from the analysis because of the time characteristic.

The information technology is changing and developing rapidly, and the needs of data applications is urgently. It makes libraries think of new information service models. In order to meet the RDA standard and FRBR model to describe library resources and facilitate the use of library data, the proprietary MARC data format should be migrated to Linked data format gradually. The study is conforms the linked data principle, it developed a procedure to convert the MARC format to Linked Data format based on the library bibliographic data of National Taiwan University. The study has implemented a linked data information system <LIPS-LOD> to present various kinds of services as well. The library catalog is the main finding tool for items owned or made available by a library. How to enhance and enrich the library catalog to improve its functionality and efficiency has become one of the major concerns of the library and information science field. Studies have revealed that enriched and enhanced bibliographic records are welcomed by catalog users. However, what do catalogers, who are the actual doers of the cataloging task, think about the bibliographic record enhancements? So far, we do not know much. The aim of this study is to explore the question from the perspective of library catalogers. The purpose is twofold: (1) to survey and investigate the status quo of the OPAC enhancements services provided by university and college libraries in Taiwan, and (2) to acquire knowledge about the catalogers’ understanding, opinions, and experiences of bibliographic record enhancements. This study includes two stages. First, the researcher carried out a questionnaire survey of 162 university and college libraries in Taiwan to investigate the state of their bibliographic enhancements. 124 institutions (76.5%) responded. Second, 14 library catalogers were subsequently invited to participate in an in-depth interview about their opinions and experiences of the bibliographic enhancements services they provided. The results of the questionnaire survey indicate that 56 of the 124 responding university libraries have provided enhanced bibliographic records. The top three collection types chosen for enhancement are Chinese books, foreign language books and audio-visual materials. The three most common added items are table of contents, abstracts and other websites. The most common way for presenting enhanced bibliographic records is through providing hyperlinks to external information. The library catalogers are the major source for generating the enhanced information. In addition, most librarians tend to agree on the value and utility of bibliographic record enhancements. They also believe that users need enhanced bibliographic records. Their opinion on keeping or planning to serve bibliographic enhancements is generally positive. For the future development of bibliographic enhancements, the interviewees suggest that we should pay attention to the progress of linked open data, big data, web-scale discovery service, and the WebPAC interface. During the process of enhancing bibliographic records, different approaches may encounter different problems and difficulties. The factors that affect the implementation of bibliographic enhancements include librarians, library directors, users, organization environment, the library scale, budget and funds, ILS systems, time pressure, the quality of enhanced bibliographic records, and workloads.

The library catalogue is the most important tool to bridge a library’s collection and its users. Nowadays, users are often faced with the problem of information overload and find it difficult to search for relevant and useful information. Thus, how to provide a better platform and mechanism to enhance users’ searching experiences has become a very important issue. One of the possible directions is to improve the way that search results are displayed. Traditionally, libraries prefer to catalog each book as an individual bibliographic entity. This practice will not be able to collocate related works properly. Moreover, people are getting used to the search interface provided by Google or Amazon.com, this change makes the aforementioned practice a more critical issue. Amazon.com is the first and the most successful Internet bookstore. Amazon.com employs some means to keep the visitors continually browsing its products. One of its mechanisms is to create a lot of linkages among its products to encourage its visitors to keep clicking on them. The goal of Amazon.com is to sell more of its products. Similarly, the library wants to increase and facilitate the use of its collection as well. This functional similarity suggests that the library professionals should understand and learn how Amazon.com provides links and how they work. This study, thus, aims to explore the linking relationships and linkage types presented in the book search results of Amazon.com. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was chosen as the target work because it is a classic and has many different versions and various formats. The complication of its publishing status is useful in helping us get an overall picture of Amazon.com’s link relationships. The investigation was divided into two stages. First, a search for Romeo and Juliet was conducted on Amazon.com, and the first 100 titles of the search results were selected for further analysis. The reason why the first 100 titles were selected is because most people would not examine more than 100 records during a search session (Wiberley, Daugherty, & Danowski, 1995). The results of the first stage analysis reveal that nine types of linking relationship are found in the first 100 titles. These are equivalence relationships, derivation relationships, descriptive relationships, content relationships, accompanying relationships, whole-part relationships, responsibility relationships, subject relationships, and title relationships. In the second stage, five titles were purposively selected from the first 100 titles examined in the first stage. These five titles represent the following selection criteria: a version of Romeo and Juliet, a descriptive work of Romeo and Juliet, an adaption of Romeo and Juliet, a translation of Romeo and Juliet, and a version of Romeo and Juliet in different media. The results show that there are 13 types of linking relationships found in the Web pages of these five titles. These relationships comprise of equivalence relationships, derivation relationships, responsibility relationships, subject relationships, items viewed by the same customer relationships, link by system analysis or suggestion relationships, items bought by the same customer relationships, customer review relationships, the same booklist relationships, the same customer tags relationships, link by system advertisement relationships, citation relationships, and the same key phrases relationships. The last 9 kinds of relationships are different from the traditional bibliographic relationships. These linkage relationships are based upon two factors: the relationship is either linked by customers or connected by the system. These relationships can be viewed as shared characteristics relationships as well. Based on the findings, the researcher then proposes the following suggestions. First, in Amazon.com, the page of each book record comprises of various information blocks. The contents of these information blocks will vary according to user’s browsing movements. In other words, the contents are based on user’s interests and the purpose is to attain the user’s attention. It means that the display of library OPACs could be more targeted toward the users. Second, in Amazon.com, an item might repetitively appear in different information blocks. The purpose is to increase the linkage to the item and enhance the visibility of the item. If we believe that every book has its reader, we should take this approach into consideration when designing an OPAC. Finally, more and more catalog user studies report that users prefer one-stop-shopping system. Amazon.com may not be an ideal information model to satisfy the needs. However, it does demonstrate a model which is focused on attracting and attaining its visitors. From the perspective of bibliographic relationships, it does employ many linking mechanisms that have been neglected by the library professionals. We definitely can learn something from Amazon.com to improve our OPAC systems.
