Vincent-Ponroy, Julia. "Family Firms’ organizational identity and non-family employees, a case study." Thesis, Université Paris-Saclay (ComUE), 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016SACLH016.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores family firms’ organizational identity from a non-family member’s perspective. The family identity of these firms constitutes both an intangible asset, that is difficult to imitate – and a crucial stake as during their growth process, family firms incorporate external members who tend to progressively represent the majority of the payroll. This stake is even more salient as owning families aim at durably influencing their firms’ identity since the family’s and the firm’s history and reputation are interrelated. However, the role of non-family members’ in the family firm’s identity has not been directly investigated by researchers so far. My dissertation aims at filling in this gap, by investigating the way non-family members contribute to enacting the family identity of the firm. The case study I conducted in a French family firm leads me to formulate three main sets of results. First, the exploration of non-family members’ perceptions of the firm reveals that they associate what they consider to be the core attributes of the firm with the owning family. Secondly, I investigate the mechanisms leading to such perceptions and identify that the family’s image and values are “brought” into the organization through four mechanisms – embodiment, reminding, spreading and adaptation – that together constitute the overall process of “familization” of the firm. Lastly, I suggest a typology of non-family members depending on their motives for contributing to “familization” mechanisms. Two categories (the adopted and the converted) play a crucial role in these mechanisms. Moreover, I show that the top management is composed of adopted and converted, who use this specific family of owners as a managerial tool having a role-modeling function. They do it because they perceive this family as embodying an axiology that is symbolized by the Family – as a generic entity –, an axiology that they consider to be valuable in an organizational context. The theoretical and practical contributions of these results are discussed

Abstract:
Family businesses are one of the driving forces behind economic growth in South Africa. It is therefore very important to understand all the different aspects of family businesses to ensure sustainability and continuity through different generations. The reasons for their failure are often predictable and the fact that the 'family dynamics' and family business issues is not well understood. Family harmony is a situation where family members acknowledge each other's achievements, that they are emotionally attached and close to each other, where they support and care for each other's welfare and this gives them a competitive advantage and as a result are in a better position to work together, trust each other, and react faster to the changing economic environment. It also leads to better, wiser decisions being taken, leading to success in business. The research was conducted by means of a literature and empirical study. The literature study entails literature on the key dynamics of family businesses and factors that influence harmony in family businesses. A convenience sample, by means of a snowball sample technique was used to identify family businesses. A total of 13 family businesses and 91 respondents participated in the Lejweleputswa District in the Free State province in South Africa. Literature revealed that there are thirteen latent variables that could be used to assess family harmony in family businesses. These determinants of family harmony are: open communication, mutual t rust and respect, conflict between family members, family commitment, personal needs alignment, division of labour, fairness, leadership, governance, non-active family members, non-family members, senior generation of family members and financial performance. The reliability of the questionnaire was determined by calculating the Cronbach alpha coefficient of the variables. The Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient normally ranges between 0 and 1. The closer the Cronbach's alpha coefficient is to 1.0, the greater the internal consistency of the items in the data. The participating family members had the highest level of agreement with the following variables concerning the statements in the questionnaire; Family Commitment (x=5.877), Financial performance (x= 5.723) and Mutual trust and respect (x= 5.716). Mutual trust, respect and leadership are the more preferable variables for the participating family members because they have the highest correlation to family harmony in family businesses. In the relationships of, active and inactive family members and the gender of the family members in regard with family harmony (dependable variable) and the perceived future continuity ( independent variable) there is never a practical significant difference. Recommendations are made to improve family harmony in family businesses and subsequently the sustainability and longevity of the businesses

Clark, Rebecca E. "Perceived Need of Family Physicians for Their Patients to Receive Family Therapy Related Care." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33059.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the extent that family physicians believe their patients could benefit from marriage and family therapy-related care, the extent of their experiences of collaborating with family therapists, and their interest in future collaboration with family therapists. Limitations family physicians face when providing psychosocial care as well as roadblocks they face when making mental health referrals and collaborating with family therapists were also explored. Sixty-four percent of the 240 family physicians surveyed responded to the mailed questionnaire. Descriptive statistics are provided for the quantitative analysis, while content analysis was used to evaluate the qualitative data. Quantitative results revealed that family physicians do detect psychosocial concerns in patient encounters, even when those concerns are not the presenting complaint, but face limitations and roadblocks to adequately addressing these concerns. The most common form of collaboration that the respondents expressed interest in was referring out with collaborative communication continuing with the family therapist, but other forms were also identified.

Abstract:
This dissertation studies meetings from a process perspective. Such an approach, which can be labelled ‘process organisation studies’ is promising in that it directs attention to social processes continuously in the making. The thesis builds on the current development in process organisation studies in two ways. The first centres on an elaboration on key assumptions of approaching organisational life from a process perspective. I here bridge process organisation studies with Bakhtin’s work on dialogue into a dialogical becoming perspective. This perspective calls for a distinct way of understanding processes of becoming which makes it possible to explore meeting practices as situated, emerging and relational world-making activities. The second is a comprehensive processual account based on a collaborative field study with two owner families. Organised meetings held in a family that owns a business (or several) has proved to be of importance for family business longevity in that the family members can help to develop strong family relations and a healthy business. In this setting, where people are dealing with that which is often most important to them in life, such as their identity, work, family relationships and future wealth, a process approach is useful since it helps to understand the emotionally loaded, complex and intertwined issues at stake. What emerges as central in understanding movement and flow is the need to understand the here and now moments in meetings. I refer to these moments as ‘living moments’ as a reminder of the once-occurring, unique and momentary transformation that can take place between people in such encounters. Thus, the living moment is the moment of movement.

Abstract:
This study defined family mediator effectiveness as ‘having a lasting positive impact on parties after mediation has concluded’. The purpose of this research was to uncover the nuances that give some family mediators effectiveness. This study used Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology as presented in the book, Idea: General introduction to pure phenomenology (Husserl 1962/1913). Since this was a phenomenological study, advanced family mediators shared their lived experience to provide valuable information. Participants for this study were selected for their family mediation experience. A group of 18 advanced family mediators who had at least 15 years of experience and at least 75 mediated cases in the area of adult family and divorce (all issues) were selected from Mediate.com. The data analysis process for all five research questions yielded 1,750 horizons with a final 224 themes. The final outcome was an integrated phenomenological framework for understanding family mediator effectiveness.

Randall, Troy D. "Assessing Family Strengths Using the Family Profile: Study to Validate and Evaluate Constructs Across Four Models of Family Functioning." DigitalCommons@USU, 1995. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/2398.

Full text
Abstract:
The concurrent criterion-related validity of the Family Profile (FAMPRO) was investigated using the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scales II (FACES II), the Self-Report Family Inventory (SFI), and the Family Assessment Device (FAD) as criterion measures . Further analysis was conducted through a principal component factor analysis with a varimax rotation and correlations with a Family Satisfaction Scale. The Family Profile is an easy-to-administer, -score, and -interpret instrument designed for use in family life education. It is a 35-item instrument that measures seven areas of family functioning: Family Fun, Family Decisions, Family Pride, Family Values, Family Caring, Family Communication, and Family Confidence. The total scores of the Family Profile had strong correlations with the total scores of the three criterion instruments. Additionally, the individual constructs of the Family Profile showed moderate to strong relationships with the corresponding subscales found in the criterion instruments. Factor analysis of the FAMPRO with this sample indicated that the most important factor explaining the largest portion of the variance is the ability of family members to display positive regard to one another in an open and warm manner. The Family Satisfaction Scale created for this project was moderately to strongly correlated with all of the Family Profile's Subscales. The sample used for this study was taken from undergraduate Family and Human Development classes at Utah State University and had a total N of 194. This nonrandom sample was mostly young, single, and female. The religious preference for 80% of the sample was Mormon (LDS). While the sample limits generalization of the results, these preliminary results provide sufficient evidence to warrant further research using the Family Profile. Because the FAMPRO is easy to use and interpret, it holds promise as an effective tool for family life educators and clinicians alike.

Abstract:

Bakgrund

Background

The vast majority of all Swedish companies are family businesses. Research within the field of family businesses has not until recent years been developed. Moreover, the research regarding valuation of family businesses is close to non-existing. Family businesses differ in many ways from non-family businesses, for example when it comes to culture, ownership and management. Hence, there is a possibility that family businesses are valuated differently from non-family businesses.

Purpose of this thesis

The purpose with this thesis is to describe how valuation of family businesses is done from the perspective of an acquiring company.

Method

For this thesis a qualitative, hermeneutic approach was applied in order to understand the whole picture of the valuation of the family business phenomenon. A case study approach was carried out by carefully studying three acquisitions of small private family businesses in the service sector made by Company X.

Conclusions

The crucial skills to possess are experience, industry knowledge, intuition and most of all family business knowledge and experience when determining a fair value of a family business. The intangible assets of a family business, for instance reputation, culture and knowledge, together with different valuation methods contribute to the estimation of the value of a family business.

Zayats, Tetyana. "Family study of high myopia : association studies." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2010. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54943/.

Full text
Abstract:
High myopia (more severe than -6.00 Diopters) is one of the leading causes of blindness and vision impairment in the world. Its prevalence has rapidly been growing and the estimated number of myopic people worldwide is expected to be 2.5 billion by the year 2020. My experimental work covered three topics: (1) characterization of the quantity and quality of mouth wash-extracted DNA (2) genetic association studies, and (3) evaluation of an imprinting effect in high myopia. Mouthwash-derived DNA is an important source of human DNA for large-scale genetic studies. Thus, potential methods of DNA quantification (spectrophotometry, fluorometry, gel electrophoresis and qPCR) and quality assessment (gel electrophoresis and PCR) were evaluated. Regarding DNA quantification methods, fluorometry compared favorably to the gold-standard qPCR. DNA quality assessments revealed that -10% of collected buccal DNA samples were severely degraded—a phenomenon that was shown to be partly subject-specific. Myopia association studies were performed for: genes in MYP regions, the myocilin gene, the collagen type I alpha 1 gene and the collagen type II alpha 1 gene. These genes have been linked to myopia because of their function and/or previous positive findings. All tests were performed on a combined dataset of complex high myopia pedigrees and cases/controls, applying likelihood ratio statistics and Bonferroni correction to account for multiple testing. The results suggested that none of the genes examined have an important influence on susceptibility to high myopia. There is greater resemblance of refractive error between siblings than between parents and offspring, implying the possibility of imprinting in the aetiology of myopia. Thus, tests for imprinting were performed on "trio" pedigrees, applying Z-score and T2-test statistics and permutation to account for multiple testing. The results tentatively suggested that parent-of- origin effects and/or by maternal effects contribute to myopia development.

Pitfield, Christy. "The Family Connections programme : a feasibility study." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2017. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1574484/.

Full text
Abstract:
AIMS: Being a family member to an individual with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is associated with high levels of burden, grief, depression and low levels of personal mastery. The aim of the study was to assess the feasibility of the Family Connections programme in the UK. The programme offers education, skills training and support to family members supporting an individual with BPD over 12-weekly group sessions. METHOD: Family members of individuals with BPD were recruited from an NHS trust. Recruitment, retention and the acceptability of the intervention were recorded to assess feasibility. Burden, grief, mastery, depression, mindfulness and emotional invalidation (EI) were measured at pre, post and at one month follow up to assess preliminary effectiveness of the programme. RESULTS: 31 participants started the programme and three of these dropped out. At the end of the programme there were significant reductions in family members levels of burden, grief, mastery, depression, mindfulness and EI. Participants reported that the intervention was acceptable. CONCLUSIONS: The Family Connections programme is a promising intervention for family members of individuals with BPD that requires further study.

Klee, Robynne. "The influence of family business resources on transgenerational success: a family business case study." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/11124.

Full text
Abstract:
Family businesses are major contributors to the economies of most countries and are known to be one of the best performing, most prevalent and resilient forms of business throughout the world. Despite their importance and based on the vast amount of research done in the field of family businesses, this form of business appears to be laden with challenges and is short-lived. Amongst others, one of the most fundamental challenges and contributors to the short-lived nature, and thus high failure rate of family businesses is poor succession planning. In order to address this challenge, the Successful Transgenerational Entrepreneurship Practices (STEP) research framework was developed to ascertain the factors that contribute to entrepreneurial performance and the effective transgenerational potential and success of family businesses globally. Transgenerational potential, entrepreneurial performance, the external mediating factors influencing family businesses, Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) and the Resource Based View (RBV) of familiness resource pools are the components that make up the STEP research framework. By adopting the STEP research framework, the primary objective of this study is to establish how a transgenerational family business creates new economic activity over time by using and transferring familiness resource pools from one generation to the next. Due to the primary focus of the study being to research familiness resource pools and how they generate transgenerational potential for family businesses, this component of the STEP research framework is investigated in detail. The literature review therefore highlights the eight dimensions of familiness resource pools, namely: leadership, networks, capital, decision-making, culture, relationships, governance and knowledge, and are the main focus of this study. An interpretivism research paradigm is selected for this study. Interpretivism paradigms are associated with qualitative research methodologies. Owing to the fact that much still remains to be discovered in terms of familiness and familiness resource pools, a descriptive, single-case study is the type of research method undertaken. The sample is identified based on non-probability purposive sampling as per the strict guidelines of the STEP project. The sample size in this study consisted of one family business operating in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The STEP interview schedule, which consists of semi-structured questions, is the research instrument used to collect the necessary data from five participants involved in the family business (a prominent motorcar dealership). Once all the data is collected, a combination of directed content analysis and explanation building are used to analyse the data. The findings of the study reveal that the leadership values present in the family business stem from that of the founder. Contrary to the current CEO’s beliefs that the family business investigated operates primarily under his participative leadership style, the interviews reveal that while the CEO does demonstrate participative leadership, his leadership style is somewhat autocratic in nature. This autocratic leadership style has caused the employees and the business as a whole, to become too reliant on the CEO, especially in terms of strategic decision-making, which may be a threat to the future succession of the business. The CEO’s expert leadership however, ensures that the business adheres to strict guidelines in terms of employing the best person for the job, regardless of whether the candidates are family members or not. As such, the prominent motorcar dealership is marketed as a family business and together under the family leadership, has helped attract customers and well qualified non-family employees to the business. While there is ample leadership available within the business, the lack of succession planning is reiterated to be a major threat facing the future of the business. Almost all of the original networks established by the founder in the prominent motorcar dealership studied still exist in the business in 2014. It is established that employees, especially those in the third generation, are encouraged to build their own networks within their relevant spheres of responsibility. Moreover, the business family’s history, reputation and goodwill have helped create and establish networks for the family business, especially within the Eastern Cape. These networks have helped the business drive sales and have contributed to the success of the business.

This dissertation aims to identify the family role in the internationalization process of two family businesses: JBS, the world’s largest protein producer and Cutrale one of the world’s leader in the orange juice market. Family businesses have characteristics that are intrinsic to this type of firms. Many of the internationalization reasons or even the way they internationalize has several characteristics that are common among other family businesses. Therefore, through a qualitative research the two case studies were analyzed based on the internationalization and family businesses theories. However, in those companies the role of the family was not a key role on the firms’ internationalization processes. This aroused questions such as whether the size and/ or industry of the company had an impact on the family’s role on the internationalization process of the business. These questions were not the focus of this study but are subsidies for future research.

Abstract:
This study examined how current family counseling/therapy programs train students to work with families with young children and made recommendations for training in this area based on recommendations of child and family therapy experts and the research and clinical literature. These recommendations explored what knowledge and skills all students should acquire versus students who want to specialize with this population. Changes to accreditation standards were also proposed as well as a description of resources to support changes in program curricula. Current training was measured by examining curricula from master's level marriage and family counseling/therapy programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) and master's level social work programs with a family-related concentration accredited by the Council on Social Work Education Commission on Accreditation (CSWE), the accreditation standards from these three organizations, course syllabi from the COAMFTE and CACREP programs, and surveys of COAMFTE and CACREP program directors (60% response rate). Recommendations for training were obtained through a qualitative analysis of quotations from the literature concerning training and through interviews of child and family therapy experts (65% response rate). The results revealed the number of courses recommended by the literature and experts was much greater than the number of child-related courses per program and a great variety of textbooks were used. Accreditation standards also required little child-related course material. The on-campus clinics had low percentages of child-related facilities but high percentages of child-related resources. The results also showed the experts recommended much greater percentages of experiential activities than were required by the programs. Finally, a much larger percentage of experts than program directors agreed that accreditation standards should be changed to include more child-related courses.

Abstract:
Geographically dispersed organizations are becoming increasingly common, however, the organizational culture is often weaker in this type of organization due to geographical distances. One important aspect of the organizational culture is the organizational values, and if shared by all organizational members they can benefit the company on many levels, for example by increasing motivation and communication. If employees, on the other hand, fail to interpret the organizational values it may lead to decreased working moral and overall dissatisfaction. In family businesses it is the values of the family that constitute the organizational values, and these may be difficult to communicate to non-family employees, because family businesses often rely on informal communication.   The purpose of this thesis is to describe how non-family employees interpret the organizational values of a family business, as well as to increase the understanding of whether geographical distance affects their interpretation. In this thesis we have conducted a qualitative case study, in which ten semi-structured interviews were made in a geographically dispersed family business. We have assumed an employee perspective and have, thus, interviewed non-family employees on the different geographical locations of this family business.   The findings from the empirical data showed that the case studied organization does not have any formally written organizational values and the non-family employees have as a result interpreted the values slightly differently. The employees state the organizational values in general terms, which would make them applicable to any organization, or even society at large.   In the analysis we compare the theoretical framework and the empirical findings in order to present conclusions for the organization being studied. The analysis will be divided into themes; organizational structure, organizational culture and values as well as the relation between the non-family employees and the family business.   We were able to conclude that informal communication is not sufficient in order to efficiently communicate the organizational values in a geographically dispersed organization. Nevertheless, the geographical distance for each workplace respectively could not be identified as the only influencing factor that affects the employees’ interpretation of the organizational values. The organizational structure emerged as a contributing factor. The non-family employees’ interpretations were broad and general in terms of the organizational values. One of our recommendations is for the organization to write down the organizational values and distribute them throughout the organization, which will enable the organizational values to be correctly interpreted by all organizational members.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: Family businesses have traditionally operated within their domestic borders and with a more global competitive market, family firms are more compelled to extend their operations abroad (Casillas & Acedo, 2005; Kontinen & Ojala, 2010). Times are changing and old internationalization theories is becoming outdated and new theories are evolving, the revised Uppsala model from 2009 is one of them. With the help of the revised Uppsala model we will try to see how family firms internationalize from a business network perspective. Purpose: The purpose of this work is to augment the research field of small and medium family business’s internationalization process with regards to the specific features of family firms. More specifically, we intend to develop an understanding of how specific features of family firms influence their international activities with regard to the network perspective of the Uppsala model.    Method: This is a qualitative study with an abductive approach which is founded on a multiple case study with two family firms. We look at how networks and relationships influence family firm’s internationalization process by conducting interviews with the top management of two family SMEs. We have conducted the interviews mainly with the two CEOs of the respective firm. Conclusion: The internationalization process of family SMEs has developed when relationships and networks have been established. The ownership structure of family firms convey particular aspects that has to be considered when investigating the internationalization process of family SMEs. Risk-avoidance and long-term orientation are central features for Family SMEs international activity.

Abstract:
Family businesses are the backbone of almost every country on earth, but their contributions towards local, national and the global economies have been and are still underestimated by millions of people. Family businesses can range from very small businesses to multinational empires found in every country and city one can think of, covering all household items, industrial equipment, automobiles, hotels and many more. Millions of people would be jobless if it was not for family businesses, but many have also lost their jobs due to the inability of families to solve their differences in order to sustain their legacy's existence. Many possible reasons exist for these businesses that have failed, but one of the most common reasons is a lack of family harmony within families. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the determinants of family harmony of family businesses and to make recommendations to enable family businesses to obtain family harmony to ensure the future continuity of family businesses. The research was conducted by means of a literature review and an empirical study. The purpose of the literature review was to gain an in-depth knowledge on family businesses. Specific topics covered in the literature review include; definitions of family businesses, the uniqueness of family businesses, the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses, family harmony, the determinants of family harmony and perceived future continuity. The determinants or constructs of family harmony were empirically tested in twenty-nine family businesses by means of a structured measurement instrument (questionnaire) and subsequently evaluated. A total of one hundred and twenty questionnaires were collected from participating family businesses. Eighty-one of these respondents were actively involved in the day-to-day activities of the family business; the other thirty-nine respondents were inactive. The reliability of the questionnaire was determined by calculating the Cronbach alpha coefficient of the constructs. None of the constructs' Cronbach alpha coefficients were lower than the routine cut-off value of 0.70. This suggests that the questionnaire used in this study to measure the latent constructs has acceptable reliability and can be accepted as internally consistent. The evaluation of the constructs determining family harmony revealed that the average score ranges between (3c = 6.250) for the construct, family commitment, and (x = 4.350) for the construct corporate governance. This indicates a high level of agreement with the statements / items concerned with family commitment and a relatively low agreement with the statements / items concerned with corporate governance. The correlation between the dependent variable, family harmony, and the independent variables revealed that based on Cohen's rules, it is evident that the independent variables, non-family members ( r= 0.313), governance ( r= 0.392) and inactive family members (r = 0.465) have a medium effect on the dependent variable, family harmony. The rest of the independent variables, however, have a large or practical significant effect (/-> 0.50) on the dependent variable, family harmony. No practical significant differences could be found between the means of the demographical variables and the constructs. Practical recommendations are suggested to improve family relationships in family businesses.

Abstract:
Introduction: Family firms serve as major block in the economy all over the world, i.e. it’s significance cannot be understated. In spite of this, many firms fail to continue the firm’s quest beyond the second generation partly because of conflicts in the firm. Conflicts, which could be divided into task, relationship and process conflict, have been deemed to only be detrimental for family firms. As such, limited knowledge exists as to what positive effects conflict may bring about in family firms. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore what the positive effects of different conflict types may be in family firms. The different conflict types are in this respect deemed to be task, relationship and process conflict. Method: The empirical material used for the purpose of this study has been gathered through 10 semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 9 different family firms. The data collected has subsequently been analyzed and conceptualized using grounded analysis (codes to themes) with an overall inductive method. Conclusion: Our findings and analysis suggest that several positive effects are associated with the different conflict types in family firms and that the family dimension of the firm work as enablers for these effects to occur. Task conflict produces a sharpened environment for task accomplishment through the enabler proximity to top level of firm. Relationship conflict result in stronger group cohesion through the enabler family feeling. Process conflict generate improved focus on task through the enabler going concern of the firm.

Abstract:
Conduct disorder (CD) is a psychiatric syndrome in childhood and adolescence that is one of the most common childhood disorders with continuously increasing prevalence but uncertain pathogenesis. We performed a genome-wide, family-based association study of CD using P2BAT/FBAT software. The data is gathered from Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) and International Multi-Center ADHD Genetics Project (IMAGE). Using COGA data, we identified 20 markers which showed suggestive associations (p<10-3) with CD. Nine of them are located in known genes. Two genes, ADAM10 and CAMK2A, which had been reported associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD), bipolar disorder, and depression, were of more concern. Using IMAGE sample, our results were well replicated. This study identified several CD associated genetic variants, especially two novel candidate genes. These findings may serve as a resource for replication in other populations to elucidate the potential role of these genetic variants in CD.

Abstract:
Family businesses are rapidly becoming the dominant form of business enterprise in both developing and developed economies. Family businesses are also being recognised as a potential driver of economic growth and wealth creation in the world. Family businesses in particular, have been making a positive contribution towards the South African economy for the last 300 years. Approximately 80% of businesses in South Africa could be classified as family businesses and they comprise 60% of the companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. Family business wellness, which often forms the underlying causes for a lack of family harmony, is, however, a neglected area of research. The primary objective of this study is to explore selected determinants of family business wellness in small and medium-sized family-owned businesses in South Africa and to make recommendations to ensure effective management of these determinants in the family business. Topics such as the characteristics of the job, work stress and burnout, job engagement, family member commitment, the perceived success of the family business, among others, was investigated. In order to achieve the primary objective of this study, a survey was undertaken using a structured questionnaire. The reliability of the questionnaire was determined by calculating the Cronbach alpha coefficient, which indicated that the questionnaire used in this study conformed to the criteria of acceptable reliability and can be regarded as internally consistent. The survey yielded 45 usable questionnaires from 17 family businesses restricted to Gauteng and the North-West provinces in South Africa. Because this study was exploratory in nature, descriptive statistics was then used to analyse the statements that captured the information to measure the selected determinants of family wellness. The correlations between the variables were assessed using Pearson’s correlation coefficients and the relationships between the variables assessing family wellness were used for the discussion and conclusion points. Practical recommendations are suggested to improve family business wellness and, subsequently, increase the sustainability of such business.

Abstract:

The context within which firms exist today is lined by the opportunities and threats of globalization, increased competition and a constantly intensifying pace. Ever since the 19th century mergers and acquisitions (M&A) have been an important way for firms to compete. Mergers and acquisitions are largely fuelled by the desire to attain synergies, market power, competitiveness and economics of scale and scope. Today, much focus in media and theory is directed towards publicly traded corporations, however, the importance of smaller to medium sized, privately owned companies, e.g. family businesses, should not be overlooked. Family businesses differ from other corporations, not only on the ownership structure but also on other organisational and strategic characteristics. Further, research within acquisitions and family businesses is very limited and there seems to be gap in literature regarding this constellations.

Purpose

This thesis will investigate acquisitions in family businesses in order to enhance the understanding of their acquisition strategy and motives. Further, the authors will study to what extent culture influences the acquisition strategy.

Method

A case study approach was chosen to achieve the purpose. The case concerned the acquisition strategy within two medium-sized family businesses, ROL AB and Bröderna Brandt Bil AB. Both companies has used acquisitions as tools for growth. The data was collected through interviews with strategists at the two companies.

Conclusion

The acquisition strategy seems to be mostly influenced by the culture in the acquiring and acquired company. Further, the acquisition motive also affects the chosen acquisition strategy. The authors also identified that whether a acquisition is successful or not depends on the time-frame. In family business, success also seems to be determined by more aspects than in e.g. public companies where success is driven by financial returns. In order to act in an international environment, one also needs to be prepared to accept higher risks.

The objective of the study is to investigate the relationship between family economic security and family careers, and whether this relationship will vary across generations. Using Taiwan’s data from the Survey of Family Income and Expenditure in 2004. The results are as follows: First, family economic security differs with family careers. Families with preschoolers tend to be the most economically insecured. Second, the degree of family economic security varies with generations. The generation aged between 35-44 is the most economically insecured. Third, family economic security shifts with demographic characteristics such as gender of head of family and family size. Finally, the relationship between family economic security and family careers differs with generations. The generation aged between 54-64 with preschoolers is the most insecured. This investigation thus has policy implications for social security and family education plans.

Digital Family Tree which is developed through data digitization, will make data preservation much easier, and photos can also be added as digital collection. It’s easier for us to remember information and stories in recent years; however, it’s easy for us to know nothing about the stories in elder’s childhood or teenage generation before marriage. Documentation and edition can be performed any time through the help of digital family tree, so that these stories can be preserved as soon as possible , and these stories can be reviewed though investigation. These stories are not priceless, but are precious memories for ourselves and our children. Gene-builder is used in this study for users to make Digital Family Tree. There are totally 13 subjects with deep interview, information of gene product, and the stories behind the information. Research result demonstrates that the experiment of Digital Family Tree using has the effects of “performance promotion” and “preserve, memorize and review some stories through video files”. In addition, digital familly tree can find out the related memory and the relation of “growing-up condition and memory of the past”, “family condition and family recognition” and “values in different generations”. In growing-up condition, parent’s social and economic status will not affect children’s family values. When there are more members in the family, their feelings and recognition toward family will be deeper. Social condition in growing-up generation, traditional concept and customs will make different values for people in the same condition. Review stories are concluded and summarized in study conclusion, and related suggestion toward future studies are proposed.

With the population of the computer technology, internet has become one of the tools of parent-child communication. Parents and children nowadays also interacted and communicated on line, just like any other relationships. However, parental communication rarely became the topic in the study about the internet. In family communication research, the researchers always talked about whether the internet interaction reduces the actual interaction in family life. In this thesis, the context of this idea lacked the communicative function of the internet., This study investigates how children have different perception of media characteristics and different internet communication behavior in the social oriented families (that emphasis parent’s power) and concept oriented families (that encourage children to share their opinions). Firstly, the study finds that the children from social oriented families are more likely to feel that they have more various topics which are unable to show while being together with their parents by face-to-face. Secondly, they consider that they are able to arrange their ideas more perfectly before talking with their parents. Moreover, the finding also indicates that the children from social oriented families are willing to share their secrets and express understanding for their parents on line. Thus, for the social oriented families, the internet provides another way to improve parental relationships.

Based on the structural family theory developed by Minuchin (1974), this study uses the data of “Panel Study of Family Dynamics” to analyze the relationship of family harmony and family structure. We expect the study can promote affection of the spouses, parents and sibling, so as to the entire family harmony. The empirical results are as follows. A clear boundary can promote a family subsystem’s affection when husband and wife can cooperate in key questions and show respect to each other; when caring, loving, and supporting behaviors exist in parental interaction; when sibling incline to the team cooperation in key questions. On the other hand, the enmeshment and disengagement boundary will result in family subsystem’s instability when traditional concept for spouse bothers each other; when parents fight frequently. Besides, we find the more consciousness degree of piety the more it promotes the parental and sibling’s affection.

The main focus of this paper is to explore the motives of income, saving, and asset portfolio responsible to uncertainty. Unlike the previous studies which focus on income and life-cycle, we focus on the effect of marriage uncertainty. The topic is important and interesting because the divorce rate is increasing dramatically in this decade. Therefore, we extracted our data from Chinese Household Income Project Data in 2002, and use OLS to investigate the relationship between marriage uncertainty and income, saving, and asset portfolio. Furthermore, we tried to understand how the effects vary with the household’s demographic variables such as age, gender, education level, and employment status. Finally, the family then divided into low, medium and high income and to investigate the relationship between saving, consumption, MPS and MPC. And the empirical result of study is found, there is the following influence below items: 1. Marriage, income, household’s age, gender, education level, and employment status has remarkable influence on precautionary saving and consumption. 2. Under different household income, variables has remarkable influence on precautionary saving, consumption, MPS and MPC.

The researchers want to explore alternative care mechanisms. After children and adolescents temporarily live in the resettlement institutions to stabilize their lives, the placement of juveniles from the original family to the resettlement process will extend to the end of the resettlement and return to the family. Personal background factors and family background factors, the relationship between family and family relationships, trying to understand the young people who have experienced the resettlement process, facing the broken and disintegrated family, experienced the original family who returned after leaving home, the family Whether the interactive relationship affects the willingness of young people in their resettlement institutions to return to their native families. Therefore, the researchers would like to know more about the actual situation of family relationship attachment and interaction after the return of adolescents in the resettlement institutions. It is necessary to understand whether the young people in the resettlement institutions face the situation before and after resettlement, whether there is any difference in the return to the original family, and explore their personal background. Relevance and influence of family background and family interaction. This study uses a structured self-compiled questionnaire, which includes "Basic Data Questionnaire" and "Family Background" and "Family Relationship Interaction" as the main variables. It analyzes the family dilemma of resettlement organizations and uses reliability analysis and factor analysis. Descriptive statistics, independent sample t- test, single-factor variance analysis, correlation analysis, and the results of the research under the project: 1. There is a significant difference between the “individual background change” and the “family interaction relationship” among the youth in the resettlement institutions. Second, the resettlement agencies' youth "family background change" and "family interaction relationship" have significant differences. 3. Resettlement organizations' youth "personal background change", "family background change" and "family relationship" Related. Researchers use practical work and research findings to explore the factors that establish their family's interactions. In the relationship between the youth and family members in the resettlement agencies, they find that different "family types" affect the family's interaction and communication patterns. Differences and fragility are related to family relationship dependence and family relationship trust, family relationship functional family relationship is affected, because the young people in the resettlement institutions experience their separation from their families during their childhood, affecting the emotional attachment to family relationships and the trust of family members. Lack of family relationship emotional support and family role responsibilities to imitate or defame factors, face the abandonment of relationships and unacceptable factors, etc., affecting the interactive willingness and communication posture of family members, testing the resettlement institutions for the return of families to the family The influence of internal and external factors.

ABSTRACT 85% Vision quality is determined by lower order aberrations. It includes myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. About 15% Vision quality is determined by higher order aberrations. The prevalence of myopia in Taiwan adult is almost 90%. And high myopia is around one fourth. Myopia has serious complications and is the most commonly seen eye problem in the ophthalmologic clinics. According to twin and family study, gene is related to myopia. The main theme of my dissertation is to investigate the role of genetic factors and family history in myopia. Our team first asked a fundamental problem – has myopia familial tendency and does parental myopic status influence offspring refraction, onset of myopia and ocular components? Our study found that family history was a strong risk factor for myopia. When there was one highly myopic parent, the odds ratio of developing high myopia was 6 and when both parents the odds ratio was almost 8. In addition, high myopia parents tended to have children whose onset of myopia was earlier than children with normal parents. Parental myopic state was also associated with ocular axial length, but not with anterior chamber depth or corneal curvature. To combine others and our result show that gene is an important role for myopia. When we found that genetic component is likely to play an important role for myopia, we proceeded to identify susceptibility genes. We hypothesized six candidate genes: MMP2, MMP3, TIMP1, COL1A1, HGF and PAX6. These genes are either involved in the eye development or eye ball structure. These genes have been implied in myopia pathogenesis in either animal studies or linkage analysis. We conducted several large case-control to test for the associations between tagging single nucleotide polymorphisms (tSNP) of each candidate genes and high myopia (defined ≦ -6D). Several statistical methods were used including single SNP analysis, haplotype analysis, subset analyses (based on presence of family history or education level). However, none of the six candidate gene is associated with high myopia. Therefore, whole genome-wide study for myopia will be our major direction in the future. There was one member of the proposal committee to ask us to include higher order aberrations for our study. But the result can’t be compatible with myopic gene study. Therefore we put this part related article to appendix.

Abstract Hsiao Sa was a bestselling female author in the 80s. Since winning the United Daily Literature Prize for “My Son Han-sheng,” she has written fiction that depicts the opportunist love between urban men and women, transgressions of love and lust, growth of females, and adolescent problems. Her detailed observations and precise words portray the society and the details of lives within society, receiving critical acclaim and praise. Liu Shao-ming also said that her work was “a sampling of the era.” Hsiao Sa’s novels explore the cold hard realities of the industrial-commercial society, complexities of romantic relationships, affairs, and youth issues. Ku Chi-tang once used the title “Hsiao Sa, Proficient at Writing about Affairs” to describe the characteristics of her works. Hsiao’s writings on youth problems have also made her unique among female writers of the same period. In this author’s eyes, she is the most “social” of the female writers. However, a fundamental consideration reveals that the key to “social problems” is the family. This dissertation uses the “family novel” orientation to consider Hsiao’s works, and uses the three aspects of “characters,” “plot,” and “aspect” to fully evaluate the deep meaning of “narration on family” in Hsiao Sa’s works.

Family is the fundamental unit of society. Traditionally, it plays the roles of producer and protector,it educates and raises the generations, and has the functions of entertainment and religion.Along with rapid industrialization, social diversi- fication and commercial over-development,the functions and roles of family has changed.France started to take the system of fami- lies'' allowances into the social security system from the 1930s to complement the roles of family and has highly developed expe- riences of family policy,so I decieded to study it by utilizing the retrospective information on this subject, introducing its history, concept and also its further development with the hope that this might be of help to those who are making research along this field. There are four chapters:(1)Definition of con- cept and objectives of family policy and introduction on its developed history which is divided into five periods.(2)Analysis of the real contents of French family policy, including three parts:fiscal aid, families'' allowances and social services;Dis- cussion on the administrative and fiscal structure of French family policy.(3) Comparison of the family policy of France with other members states of European Union; Emphasis on similarities and differences of these countries'' family policy can help figure out how European Union will coordinate and integrate the family in favor of every family.(4)Evaluation on how French family poli- cy is being implemented, and discussion on what problems France has to face and on how to resolve them. In the future, for French government, the most important issue must be to revaluate its functions and goals,to reexamine how it is implemented, and to harmonize with the other members states of European Union in this field.
