Webb, Michael Blair. "Addiction and the law : a case-study of the Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Act." University of Canterbury. School of Law, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/2567.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis presents a case study of New Zealand's Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Act 1966 - a civil commitment law used to detain alcoholics and drug addicts for up to two years in state-certified residential treatment facilities. The thesis positions itself as a call for legislative reform. The central argument is that the Act is an anachronistic and potentially draconian piece of social legislation which has no place on the modern-day New Zealand statute book. In the first part of the thesis, Chapter 1 introduces the research, outlines the structure and methodology of the thesis, and locates the study within a wider tradition of scholarship on the management of people with alcohol problems. Chapter 2 summarises the analytical framework that is used to evaluate the Act, attaching particular importance to both the philosophical traditions and the practical strategies of harm minimisation and therapeutic jurisprudence. Chapter 3 gives a positivist reading of the legislation : outlining the evolution of the Act, essaying its major provisions, and noting the efforts that have been made to refine or reform the statute since it was passed in the mid-1960s. Chapter 4 draws on the limited amount of data available to describe how the Act is currently operating 'on the ground'. In the second part of the thesis, the Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Act is put into a comparative context by describing examples of similar-type statutes that exist in two other jurisdictions. Chapter 5 focuses on the New South Wales Inebriates Act 1912; Chapter 6 focuses on the Swedish Act on Care of Addicts in Certain Cases 1989. The final part of the thesis builds a case for reform of the Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Act. Chapter 7 identifies various practical and clinical problems with the Act, which mean that the statute does not work in instrumental terms. It is submitted that the Act cannot be said to make better provision for the care and treatment of alcoholics. Chapter 8 highlights several legal and philosophical difficulties with the Act, which mean that the legislation does not work in value terms. It is submitted that the Act is offensive to the right to refuse treatment and fundamentally conflicts with the principles of individual autonomy and informed consent. Chapter 9 proposes three options for reforming the Act, expressing a preference for the outright repeal of the statute. Finally, Chapter 10 draws conclusions from the preceding discussion, and speculates on the likelihood that the recommended reforms will be implemented.

Van, Stone Carolina A. "Emotional regulation through sugar addiction| A phenomenological study." Thesis, Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3718811.

Full text
Abstract:

Treatment of addictive processes is one of the specialties of clinical psychology. Practitioners hone their skills to relieve the suffering and ill affects of substance use. This dissertation explored sugar use, as an addictive process, through the lens of emotional regulation, addressing the research question: What is the lived experience of emotional regulation through sugar addiction? The study specifically excluded treatment.

Review of literature revealed ways to treat, supplement, or kick the sugar habit, examined sugar addiction qualifiers by comparing them to neural correlates of other drug dependencies, and provided recovering food and sugar addicts’ insights into America’s food supply and the harmful deceptions perpetuated by its food industry. The Food Addiction Institute’s library maintains over 2,700 peer reviewed articles.

The study employed a phenomenological research method to look at six co-participants’ lived experience—idiographically, to determine what characteristics and themes are unique to each co-participant, and nomothetically, to determine what universally characterizes the whole group.

Co-participant entry into the study required meeting the thresholds for the Yale Food Addiction Scale, abbreviated version. Interview transcripts provided a rich data base for analysis. Idiographic essential descriptions were used to create a narrative for each co-participant. The nomothetic aggregate used common denominators to create a universal picture of the whole group.

This study aimed for a greater understanding of the interdependent nature of sugar and emotions. What might a sugar addicted population express that facilitates recovery and emotional regulation? Due to its qualitative approach to data acquisition the research was personal and explored beyond the surface to obtain a unique and individualized story, yet was able to identify a picture common to the whole group.

The lived experience revealed that envy, deprivation, fear of sugar’s control, and lack of support from authority figures contributed to an inability to get enough of comfort foods or to stop overconsumption, and contributed to feelings of guilt, shame, and loss. Co-participants expressed excitement and gratitude that someone was interested in this topic.

Allie, Naaheeda. "Exploring problematic experiences : an IPA study of 'Internet Addiction'." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1016395.

Full text
Abstract:
In the past two decades, a considerable amount of research has been carried out on the phenomenon of excessive Internet use, variously termed Internet addiction, Internet dependency and problematic Internet use. Despite this, there is still little agreement as to what constitutes this phenomenon, whether it should be considered a clinical disorder or not and what leads to this excessive or maladaptive use. The terminology used in this study is that of Problematic Internet Use (PIU). Several theoretical models have been proposed in the understanding of PIU including personality models, operant conditioning models, social cognitive and cognitive behavioural models (Davis, 2001; LaRose, lin & Eastin, 2003; Young, 1999). A proposed gap in the literature is the lack of studies exploring participant experiences of problematic Internet use. It is for this reason that this study aimed at exploring the experiences of a small sample of individuals with self-identified problematic Internet use. The implications of this phenomenological data for the above-mentioned theoretical models were then reviewed. This study used an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach in exploring these aims. A sample of four participants was selected through purposive sampling techniques. Four major themes emerged from the analysis namely: Escapism, Social Insecurity and Validation, Perfectionism and Control. These experiences of participants were also explored in terms of the conceptual models reviewed in order to compare how closely they related to participant experiences. A strong inter-relationship was found between the four themes mentioned above. The Internet appeared to provide a sense of control and validation to these individuals while simultaneously rendering them unable to maintain control of their Internet usage in relation to this. This sense of control was experienced through an escape from negative emotions, offline obligations and at times a dissatisfactory position in reality. Of the four models reviewed, the Social Cognitive model proposed by LaRose et al. (2003) appeared to offer the most relevant understanding of PIU to participant experiences. The presence of maladaptive cognitions also appeared to feature strongly as an underlying factor in participants' PIU, as theorised by cognitive behavioural models (Davis, 2001; Young, 1999) Finally recommendations are made for further more detailed exploration of PIU using interpretative, experiential methods.

Abstract:
This thesis undertakes a study of human addictions, particularly drug and alcohol dependency, from the disciplines of psychology and theology, working towards an integrated study. In the first instance it sets out to understand the aetiology of addictive behaviour, as an important stage in the process of helping addicted people to overcome their substance dependency. Secondly, it aims to provide a well-researched and robust framework for the pastoral care of people who are addicted as part of the Christian Churches’ response to serious social problems both for individuals and families. It is argued that confusion about the aetiology of addiction, and how best to treat addicted people, contributes to the failure of many treatment modalities to provide effective long term relief. A new model for understanding addiction is proposed. This model begins in a different place: it argues that we would have a better understanding of addiction and how to treat it if we began by investigating human desires and aspirations, before attempting to understand why for some people desire for drugs becomes excessive or distorted. It is suggested in the final section of the thesis that, in line with Augustinian thought, all human longing has its roots in desire for God, even though people may not be aware that the ultimate goal of their quest is an experience of the divine. In the concluding discussion and conclusion, we suggest that this model has important contributions to make as a discrete element in the clinical care of addicts and in the area of pastoral and spiritual care whether in parishes or other institutions where pastoral care is provided. The new model is then related to existing models of pastoral care, and examples are given of how the model is currently being presented in training programmes for pastoral ministry.

Shotton, Margret Anne. "An exploratory study of computer dependency." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1988. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/11210.

Full text
Abstract:
This research was initiated to investigate the syndrome of computer dependency, and to ascertain whether there was any foundation to the apocryphal stories which suggested that 'obsessive' dependency by some people upon computers and computing was detrimental to their psychological and social development. National publicity brought forth volunteers who considered themselves to be dependent upon computers. As a group they did not form a cross-section of the general population but consisted in the main of very well educated, adult males. (An additional study showed that there were distinct differences between the sexes in attitudes held towards computers to account for this lack of balance). As the computer dependent individuals were unrepresentative of the general population, control groups were established with whom comparisons could be made, matched with them on the criteria of sex, age and highest educational level. One control group was formed from computer owners who were not computer dependent and the other from people Who did not own a computer. Thus three groups were studied; a computer dependent group and two controls. The results established that the two computer-owning groups differed significantly from each other in their preferred computing activities, both quantitatively and qualitatively. As anticipated, the computer dependent individuals spent significantly more time computing than the others, but they were also found to use computers in a more exploratory and self-educational manner, rarely having a definite end-product in mind. All three groups were found to have enjoyed different types of hobbies throughout their lives. The computer dependent group had shown interests in technological and scientific artefacts before school age and rarely partook of either the social or physical activities of interest to the control groups. The dependent group had found in the computer the ultimate hobby; one which was constantly stimulating and exciting and which matched their psychological needs. Investigation of the social and psychological issues suggested that the group of computer dependent people had experienced different types of parenting from the control groups, leading them to become object- rather than people-centred at an early age. This bias had been perpetuated throughout life, leaving them shy and unable to form satisfactory relationships; they neither trusted humans nor needed them in many cases. Their lives had become dominated by task- and object-related activities, with the computer offering them a controllable form of interaction Which they had been unable to find elsewhere. Deleterious effects occurred within some marriages Where one spouse had become computer dependent, but only en very rare occasions did individuals express distress about their dependency. Tb the contrary, the positive benefits gained by their use of computers far outweighed any disadvantages. The research disproved the hypothesis that computer dependency was in general detrimental to the individuals' social and psychological development, and suggested that computer dependency was in fact therapeutic by providing an outlet for their high levels of curiosity and originality. Computing had brought them intellectual stimulation rarely found when interacting with the majority of humans and had provided a level of fulfilment to which many would aspire.

St, Germaine Jacquelyn, and Germaine Jacquelyn St. "Dual relationships: A national study of addiction counselors' beliefs and behaviors." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/186345.

Full text
Abstract:
The study of ethical beliefs and behaviors of mental health professionals has become important of late. Of particular relevance is the "dual relationship", a second relationship that occurs between counselor and client. Addiction counselors, many of whom are recovering alcoholics/addicts, are often placed in situations, such as 12-step meetings and recovery groups, that could result in dual relationships. A national survey of 2000 Certified Addiction Counselors was conducted to determine their ethical beliefs and practices in the area of dual relationships. The results were compared to the Borys and Pope (1989) national study of psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers. The majority of counselors rated 11 behaviors as "never ethical" and had never engaged in 19 of the 20 behaviors, a more conservative report than the subjects of the Borys and Pope (1989) study. No significant differences were found in reported practice of 13 behaviors between the two studies. Addiction counselors reported higher rates of practice on four items and lower rates of practice on three items than the Borys and Pope subjects. Respondents report the same rate of engaging in sexual dual relationships with current clients as the other group (.5%). While over half of counselors were recovering alcoholics/addicts, this variable had no effect on ethical beliefs or behaviors.

Hill, Patricia DiAna. "Addiction and Recovery Experiences of African American Women: A Phenomenological Study." VCU Scholars Compass, 2005. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/729.

Full text
Abstract:
Historically, substance abuse research has for the most part excluded African American women. The small body of existing substance abuse research regarding African American women does not examine gender and socio-cultural issues from African American women's perspectives. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to develop a deeper, contextual understanding of the experiences and perspectives of this marginalized population of women. The major goal of the study is to examine the perspectives of African American women about their substance abuse, treatment and recovery. The knowledge gained from this research with African American women regarding their experiences and specific needs in substance abuse treatment is vital to our understanding of this special population and the complex phenomena of substance abuse. In-depth qualitative interviews were used to capture the personal accounts of 25 African American women in substance abuse treatment and recovery. The sample of women in treatment was recruited from public outpatient and residential substance abuse programs in the Richmond, Virginia metropolitan area. Recovering women were recruited through community contacts using snowball sampling techniques. A semi-structured interview guide was used for data collection and interviews were audiotape recorded with the permission of the participants. The women in this study recalled specific events and experiences related to their substance abuse, treatment and recovery. Experiences with trauma were prevalent in the lives of many of the women in this study. The women identified a plethora of needs both met and unmet that are salient to their emotional and physical wellbeing. The women's perceptions of substance abuse treatment programs were influenced by a host of factors, however, the women overall expressed positive regard for substance abuse treatment. The women also evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of substance abuse treatment programs.Substance abuse disorders are complex and have far-reaching ramifications for individuals, families and communities. The paucity of funding and lack of equal access to substance abuse and other related services remains a challenge in an environment of conservatism, high health care costs and cutbacks in human services. Where substance abuse treatment is available, programs must improve services in a manner that matches the multiple and complex needs of women. If substance abuse treatment programs are to become more effective, a family-focused service model that promotes recovery of the family system must also be adopted. Moreover, the women's participation in their own care is salient to their healing, empowerment and recovery. Socio-cultural factors related to oppression play a significant role in the daily lives of African American women in both direct and indirect ways and thus warrant attention in substance abuse treatment.

Voigt, Thomas J. K. Jr. "Learning as it relates to addiction recovery| A case study of the learning experiences of men in a faith-based addiction recovery program." Thesis, Northern Illinois University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3611362.

Full text
Abstract:

This case study is about learning as it relates to addiction recovery within the Men's Ministry (a pseudonym) program at an urban, faith-based mission, hereafter referred to as WCM (an acronym). The program is free and long-term residential. Its purpose is to be a "life transformation ministry for troubled men whose lives are out of control as a result of drugs, alcohol or some other destructive behavior pattern."

The study examines the described experiences of 13 WCM residents from the perspectives of two researchers: Cranton and DiClemente. Cranton's work explains change through adult learning, which can be transformative. DiClemente's work describes steps of change of becoming addicted and of recovering from addiction.

At my request, the chaplain at WCM selected Men's Ministry residents willing to share their life experiences as part of this study. During three 90-minute interviews based on Seidman's interview model, 13 residents shared their experiences before WCM in the first interview, their experiences at WCM in the second interview, and reflections on the first two interviews in the third interview.

The research questions that guided the study were (a)-How did the subjects in this faith-based addiction recovery program describe their own learning? and (b)-What were the subjects' perceptions of changes they experienced while in this faith-based addiction recovery program?

Participants' descriptions resulted in four conclusions: Multiple formal activities affected each participant; informal learning occurred throughout the WCM facility; participants' descriptions of changes at WCM resulted in recognition of changes throughout their prior lives; there was no single description by participants of a change, or a motive for change, at WCM.

Implications for future research include conducting longitudinal studies of this program's graduates, conducting studies with different participants to compare to this study, analyzing subsets of the data obtained, determining the indicated key programmatic elements, conducting studies about nonfaith-based residential substance addiction recovery programs to compare to this study.

Implications for practice include seeking adult educator's advice about including adult learning principles in substance addiction recovery, using adult educators as instructors in substance addiction recovery, and co-ordinating all practice activities with research findings.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND:The teenage years are the years when adolescents seek their identity, and part of this involves experimenting with tobacco. The use of tobacco as such, and norms among their friends, is more important to the adolescents than the norms of parents when it comes to using tobacco or not. The aim was to explore the significance of using snus for adolescents, and attitudes to snus, as well as the reasons why they began using snus and what maintained and facilitated the use of snus.METHODS:Adolescents who use snus were interviewed in focus groups. The material was analysed using content analysis.RESULTS:Four groups of boys and one group of girls were interviewed, a total of 27 students from the upper secondary vocational program. Three themes related to the students' opinions on and experiences of using snus were found: Circumstances pertaining to snus debut indicate what makes them start using snus. Upholding, which focuses on the problem of becoming addicted and development of identity, and approach, where the adolescents reflect on their snus habits in relation to those around them. A number of factors were described as relevant to behaviour and norm building for the development into becoming a snus user. Attitudes and actions from adults and friends as well as - for the boys - development of an identity as a man and a craftsman influenced behaviour.CONCLUSIONS:The results showed that development of identity was of major importance when adolescents start using snus. The adolescents were initially unable to interpret the early symptoms of abstinence problems, but subsequently became well aware of being addicted. Once they were stuck in addiction and in the creation of an image and identity, it was difficult to stop using snus. These factors are important when considering interventions of normative changes and tobacco prevention in schools as well as among parents.

Depippo, Amanda. "Compassion Fatigue and Self-Care Strategies among Addiction Professionals: A Qualitative Study." Scholar Commons, 2015. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5677.

Abstract:
Addiction is a prevalent disorder and is on the rise. Addiction has serious symptomology and can negatively impact an individual’s life in several areas. Not only can the person addicted become negatively impacted, but the addiction professional that treats this disorder can become negatively impacted as well. Because there is often a high co-occurrence of addiction and trauma among addiction clients, this intensifies the clinical profile of such clients which compounds the risk for addiction professionals. It is the addiction professional’s response to this combination of addiction and trauma that can cause these professionals to experience compassion fatigue. Research has been done to examine compassion fatigue among a variety of populations, but there has been limited research specifically with addiction professionals. This study aims to add to the literature by focusing on addiction professional’s experiences with compassion fatigue and associated symptomology, and to explore the participant’s training and their self-care strategies in relation to compassion fatigue. Seven addiction professionals in the Tampa Bay area participated in in-depth interviews that focused on their experiences with compassion fatigue, training, and self-care. The data collected was analyzed qualitatively using thematic analysis. Results indicated compassion fatigue was present among six out the seven participants and that there was a lack of training among these participants. All of the participants shared several self-care strategies they use to address compassion fatigue. The study concludes by providing implications of the research, limitations, and recommendations for future research.

Abstract:
The overall objective of this study was to expound on the relationship between attitudinal change toward addiction and addictive behavior among substance abusers entering an inpatient treatment programs. To achieve this objective the following determinants were addressed by the author: 1) Effects of Substance Abuse, (2) Attitudinal/Behavioral Change and (3) Inpatient Treatment Program. The study involved thirty adults, males and females, ranging between the ages of 18 to 57. The participants entered an inpatient treatment program at a local treatment facility in Atlanta, Georgia. This study was an attempt to look at the change of attitude and change of behavior among substance abusers entering an inpatient treatment program. The results indicated there was a change in attitude, but did not indicate if there was a change in behavior. In observing the participants in the study there was a decrease in addictive behavior. This may have occurred because the client went through four weeks of educational classes about addiction and its consequences during the course of this study.

Graham, Matthew Donald. "Recovery from addiction as a joint and gendered project : an action theoretical study." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/13077.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative study described the process of addiction recovery as it unfolded within close relationships and delineated the ongoing impact of gender on this process. The sample included five dyads that identified as being in a close-relationship and at least one of whom that self-identified as being in addiction recovery. The guiding research questions underlying the process included, “how do persons in close-relationships form and enact joint goals of addiction recovery?” and, “how are addiction-recovery projects gendered?” Data was collected using the qualitative action project method and participants were asked to describe how they came to view themselves as in recovery, what they were doing together to achieve recovery goals and how they each viewed his or her gender as impacting the ongoing process. Processes were identified and clarified in the form of joint projects and were monitored over approximately three months. Data analysis was based on the processes outlined as part of the qualitative action-project method (Young, Valach, & Domene, 2005) and informed by Stake’s (2005) instrumental case study method. The research findings yielded five detailed action-theoretically informed narrative descriptions of each dyad’s recovery project including the impact of gender on each case. Assertions about the addiction recovery process and the gendered nature of recovery were presented at the end of each case (Stake, 1995). Five overall (key) assertions about addiction recovery, as experienced by these participants, were drawn from a cross case analysis. Findings identified that addiction recovery was an inherently relational process and that when relationship goals and processes were going well these could supercede recovery goals and processes. The findings also identified that addiction recovery was gendered and gender role flexibility was identified as helpful for addiction recovery. Assertions drawn from the study indicated that addiction recovery would lose its meaning without consideration of its interdependency with close relationship and work-vocational pursuits. Although the research design precludes generalizing from the data, the knowledge generated herein may be helpful to others in the fields of psychology, social work, psychiatric nursing, and related health care disciplines, at the levels of education, training, and practice.

The application of smartphone has attracted a lot of attention in the mobile communication era. The smartphone provides us the richness and convenient life. However the negative impact of smartphone using on health and spirit issues, such as smartphone addiction and mobile phone addiction, have been discussed in recent years. There are a lot of discussions for internet addiction or social network addiction in previous studies. However, there are a few researches on smartphone addiction. In this study, we based on the Self-efficacy theory model, extended by technostress, time flexibility and compulsive anxiety as our research model and try to figure out the facts influence smartphone addiction. Hypothesis testing was performed using SmartPLS on data collected with 268 smartphone users. The results show that smartphone addictions were affected by compulsive anxiety, technostress and smartphone self-efficacy. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed.

The application of computer and ineternet were rarer commodity in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. But if there is a precursor to today’s social networking sites, it was the AOL (America Online) for many people. Internet social networking is social networking where individuals with similar interests connect with one another through their internet device or mobile.A virtual community is a social network of individuals who interact through specific social media, in order to pursue mutual interests or goals. However, the negative impact of social network using on health and spirit issues are discussing a lot, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and stress. In this study, we based on the Self-efficacy theory model, extended by low self-control, loneliness and social interaction anxiety as our research model and try to figure out the facts influence social network addiction. Hypothesis testing was performed using SmartPLS on data collected with 315 social network sites users. The results showed that social network sites users were affected by loneliness, low self-control, and computer self -social interaction anxiety. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed.

ABSTRACT University students currently live in the age of wireless networking and have almost ubiquitous Internet access. Generally characterized as being in a phase of seeking self-affirmation and self-identity, university students long to achieve a sense of belonging and accomplishment from peers and schooling. To achieve these goals, university students may use the Internet as a means for expressing their emotions and of finding support from virtual communities. In addition, because most university students live on their own or with friends, they are prone to becoming overly dependent on the Internet. To determine the factors contributing to Internet addiction in university students, this study investigated the problems encountered by university students when adapting to university life. This study used in-depth interviews to investigate the online-gaming usage behavior of five university students, all of whom had different personal backgrounds. Online gaming addiction was divided into early, middle, and late phases to examine the effect of online gaming addiction on related student problems (e.g., school, personal relationships, family life, and physical and psychological health). Finally, the study determined methods for recovery and proposed recommendations.

Abstract:

Consumption of addictive substances poses a challenge to economic models of rational, forward-looking agents. This dissertation presents a theoretical and empirical examination of consumption of addictive goods.

The theoretical model draws on evidence from psychology and neurobiology to improve on the standard assumptions used in intertemporal consumption studies. I model agents who may misperceive the severity of the future consequences from consuming addictive substances and allow for an agent's environment to shape her preferences in a systematic way suggested by numerous studies that have found craving to be induced by the presence of environmental cues associated with past substance use. The behavior of agents in this behavioral model of addiction can mimic the pattern of quitting and relapsing that is prevalent among addictive substance users.

Chapter 3 presents an empirical analysis of the Becker and Murphy (1988) model of rational addiction using data on grocery store sales of cigarettes. This essay empirically tests the model's predictions concerning consumption responses to future and past price changes as well as the prediction that the response to an anticipated price change differs from the response to an unanticipated price change. In addition, I consider the consumption effects of three institutional changes that occur during the time period 1996 through 1999.

Case Study on Addiction to On-Line Game ABSTRACT The study aims to understand the addiction factors by which junior-high students would fall victim to on-line games. The subjects were three first-grade students, one of whom was female, the others male. Qualitative research was conducted in order to obtain and then analyze necessary data which consisted of in-depth interviews with three subjects, their home-room teacher and parents. The major findings of the present study were summarized as follows: 1. The three cases of playing on-line games: The study found that (1) all the subjects began to play on-line games when at elementary schools and the average length of experiences of playing on-line games reached from two to three years. (2) They started to play on-line games through introduction of their relatives or peers. (3) The average time of playing on-line games per week were at least 15 to 24 hours and the time would double or triple on weekends. (4) The on-line games played by the subjects all belonged to role-play games. 2. The socioeconomic backgrounds of the three cases: The study found that the education status and occupations of parents bore no direct relationship with the addiction factors by which the subjects fell victim to the on-line games. Besides, it was found that whether or not family members played on-line games would affect the motivations of subjects. Thus, family members and relatives played important roles when introducing and accompanying the subjects to play on-line games. 3. The subjects' symptoms of addiction to the on-line games: This study found that addiction to the on-line games stemmed from psychological dependence on playing on-line games which could relieve and eliminate the pressure from outside surroundings. No physiological dependence was revealed in the study. 4. The relationship between the subjects' motivations of playing on-line games and the addiction factors: The study found that the major motivation came from the desire to relieve and eliminate the pressure from outside surroundings and the stimulating motivation then generated psychological crises and alteration of moods which once again gave a reason to play on-line games. In a word, the cause-and-effect relationship between the outer stimulating pressure and inner psychological alteration of moods resulted in the build-up of addiction to the on-line games. 5. The relationship between parents' attitudes towards the subjects' playing on-line games and the addiction factors: The study found that addiction to on-line games may be attributed to parents' insufficient training of using computers and surfing the Internet, their overconfidence in self-control of the subjects, and their lack of knowledge about the contents and methods of playing on-line games. In addition, whether or not family members or relatives accompanied subjects while they played on-line games would affect the attitudes of parents towards playing on-line games.

Internet Addiction is a critical issue for mental health for adolescents in Taiwan. In order to prevent the adolescents from harm of internet addiction, preventive program developed according the risk factors of it was very important. Unfortunately, mountains studies focus on the risk factors of internet addiction lack assessment tool and diagnostic tool based on empirical data. Besides, most studies are cross-section study. It is difficult to clarify the causal or temporal relationship of these factors. In present study, by prospective study designed, we develop two cross section investigations for genius high school students in one year. In the first investigation, we assess the severity of internet addiction, the self esteem, the mental health, the family support, the life satisfaction, the personality, the stress level, family factor, online behavior, and demographic data. In the second investigation one year later, we investigate the severity of internet addiction, the self esteem, the family support, the life satisfaction, and the ADHD symptoms. Based on above assessment, higher sensation seeking, lower reward dependence, lower self esteem, lower family support, the sibling’s internet habit, online gamine, and higher hostility were revealed to be the associative factors for emergency of internet addiction. Besides, higher interpersonal sensation, higher hostility, and “not live with mother” were revealed to be the associative factors for maintenance of internet addiction. The result could provide to establish the guild for preventive and treatment schedule for internet addiction.

Abstract:
Heroin addicts are often misunderstood and stigmatised. The aim of this investigation was to provide the reader with a description of the life world of heroin addicts who seem unable to recover from their addiction. The phenomenological method was used in order to achieve the aim of this study. Themes which emerged were that heroin traps the addicts in a paradox - creating meaning for them and robbing them of it at the same time. They develop a personal love relationship with the heroin, which turns into an abusive relationship. Recovery holds no guarantees as the addicts experience the process of recovery as a never ending cycle. This study highlights the value of the phenomenological method in describing the life world of the heroin addict undergoing treatment. Recommendations are made which may be of value to the professional working with the heroin addict.

With the progressive development of information technology and the open access of online games to the public, using computers to connect to the Internet for playing online games offers a new communicative media and activity zone. However, the popularization of online gaming has let partail consumers make playing them as a daily habits, and then gradually and unconsciously, they has become addicted to online games, become online-game addicts. The purpose of this study is to understand what factors has led to online-game addiction. Through the image based on interviews with a metaphor for the extraction technology (Zaltman Metaphor Elicitation Technique, ZMET) , I, as a reserchers, tries to establish a consensus map of the players to find out the inner and metal factors that leads to online-game addiction. Also, based on the core symptoms of Internet addiction (IA-Sym) , this study tries to adapte them to set up a standard to measure online-game addiction, and then to verify the impact of these symptoms and inner factors on online-game addiction for the consumers. After interviewing 12 players in ZMET way, and through the establishment of a consensus map, this study gains 19 addictive factors, and going a step further, relates them to 16 constructs. According to these 16 constrcts, the resercher designs its questionary for the follow-up quantification reserch in online-game factors. After the resercher received 286 valid smapling(questionaries)in return, response rate 95%, and then analyzed them, the result showes that the 16 constrcts can be divided into two factors, "virtual and achievement" and "passion and enthusiasm”, and furthermore, that this two categories of factors have significant and positive influences on the core symptoms of those online-game addicts.

In an era with plenteous gourmet foods, tasting and chasing after gourmet foods is a way of savoring fine flavors in one’s life. As addiction refers to an individual’s repeated actions for gratifying one’s psychological needs and the general public’s pursuit of gourmet foods has become an ordinary scene, isn’t modern people’s with zealous obsession with gourmet foods a behavior of gourmet addiction? Having said that, further investigations are required to determine whether the concept of addition is utterly equal to gourmet addiction Considering that there were no discussions of issues pertaining to gourmet addiction in previous studies, this study aimed to explore the being of gourmet addiction, conceptualize gourmet addition, and come up with types of gourmet addition. Adopting qualitative research methods, we conducted in-depth interviews with nine passionate gourmet good lovers, each of which had a background in the food and beverage industry or other related fields. Further, we analyzed and coded content of the interviews with content analysis and put forward our conclusions and suggestions. This study categorized components of gourmet addiction into three factors: ravishing and captivate for all people (gourmet addiction triggered by visual stimulation), overwhelming and irresistible aromas that make passengers stop to smell (gourmet addiction triggered by olfactory stimulation), astonishing and heartrending sensation (gourmet addiction triggered by auditory stimulation), tantalizing and lingering sensation to the taste bud (gourmet addiction triggered by gustatory stimulation), lingering memories and a strong desire to continue or relive an experience (gourmet addiction resulting from psychological reasons), and a constant craving and need for food (gourmet addiction resulting from one’s lifestyle). The visual stimulation factors included love at first sight, a scene which recalls past memories, previous happenings leaping before one’s eyes, memory at first sight, quenching one’s desire with illusions, and looking on with longing eyes. The olfactory stimulation category included lingering and faint scents, aromas filling one’s robes, and smells that penetrate into one’s nostrils. The auditory stimulation category included sonorous, resounding and prolonged sounds, enchanting notes that persist long after the end of an event, and not knowing the taste of meat for three months. The gustatory stimulation category included flavors that cannot be narrated, a lingering taste in one’s mouth, finger sucking deliciousness, mouthwatering deliciousness, and licking one’s chops. The psychological reason category included an experience of sudden and striking realization, bearing in one’s mind constantly and obsessively, failing to control one's mind or emotion, being deeply ingrained, being engraved in the bones and printed on the heart, and as if thirsting or hungering for something. The life category included not objecting to the finest food and eating being an integral part of people’s life. In addition to putting forward a few definitions of gourmet addiction and connotations of management as a referenced for the food and beverage industry, this study also offered suggestions for the directions of future studies.

People can surf the Internet using their phones or tablet PC at any time and any place. Due to this change, this research aims at discussing the relationship between internet using motivations of people with different background variables and their actual internet using behaviors, and then discussing that internet using behaviors affect internet involvement, and involvement has positive effects on internet self-efficacy, or its negative effects can cause internet addiction. It collects literature of related fields regarding the five constructs, i.e. internet using motivation, internet using behavior, internet involvement, internet self-efficacy and internet addiction and conducts a questionnaire survey. There are 263 respondents and the number of valid questionnaires is 230. The number of male and female respondents is 128 and 102 respectively and their age is between 19~35; undergraduates, graduate students and social beings are included. The statistical analysis methods it uses are descriptive statistics analysis, validity and reliability analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, regression analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results of ANOVA show in internet addiction, men outnumber women, and in self-efficacy, graduate students are superior to undergraduates. The results of correlation analysis show a positive moderate or high correlation between internet using motivation, internet using behavior, internet involvement, internet self-efficacy and internet addiction, but there is a low correlation between internet self-efficacy and internet addiction. The results of regression analysis show “Social Motivation”, “Instrumental Motivation” and “Entertainment Motivation” in Internet Using Motivation all have positive effects on internet using behaviors. “Information Learning”, “Leisure and Recreation” and “Communication and Making Friends” in Internet Using Behavior all have positive effects on internet involvement. Internet involvement has positive effects on “General Self-Efficacy”, “Self-Efficacy for Communication” and “Self-Efficacy for Internet Learning” in Internet Self-Efficacy. Internet involvement has positive effects on “compulsive internet use”, “Withdrawal from Internet Addiction”, “Tolerance of Internet Addiction”, “Time Management” and “Healthy Relationship Management” in Internet Addiction. This shows the overall regression model above is statistically significant.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of how a problem-determined system developed around a case of drug addiction within the context of a system of relatedness. The epistemological framework informing this qualitative study was constructivism. The six participants who took part in the study represent the most prominent role players in the particular context of living. The individual battling with drug addiction, his parents, older sister, maternal grandmother and maternal aunt were interviewed. The methods of data collection employed were semi-structured interviews, a family-chronological event chart, genograms, and an eco-map. The interviews were interpreted using the hermeneutic approach. The different themes that emerged from each participant’s story were integrated in relation to each other and with respect to the collaborative sources of data. The most dominant themes extracted within this study are the initial reactions to Andrew’s drug addiction, life changes experienced due to Andrew’s drug addiction, support, as well as the meanings attributed to Andrew’s drug addiction. Further research into problem-determined systems in different cultures is recommended.

With the popularity of the ADSL, which resulting in the development of the online game, it is the fact that more and more people have the trend to the addiction of online game. So, we emphasized the topic of research on Massively Multiplayer Online Game and discussed the main reasons resulted in the addiction of Online Game. Besides, according to review of the references, flow experience is the crucial influence causing the addiction of Online Game. Therefore, depending on the skills and properly adjusted challenges which were used by flow experience, we tried to testify whether the occurrence of flow experience would be came into effect by means of users. We used the experiment design in this research. According to the skilled users’ level, we gave them with from high level challenges to low level ones. The tools we also gave to them are “Yolgang” this kind of game, and we mainly focused on the users having playing this kind of game. The results of this experiment told us that different skills and challenges of those users will result in different addiction of this kind of game. By the way, we also found that either higher skilled users with higher challenges or lower skilled users with lower challenges are all can reach the addiction of online game. However, the experiment in online game, the number of the completed mission, and the number of the treasure of the users who also played this kind of game are not significantly related to the research we did in this topic. Besides, except that the users’ external locus of control are related to the addiction of online game, the others are not having obvious relationships with the effects of addiction. According to the references, this research found that uses and gratifications, online game flow experience, and online game self-regulation personality have the great influence on the addiction of online game. Moreover, personal interaction also results in flow experience. We tried to discuss the causes and effects between structures by means of Structual Equation Model. Finally, we indeed found that individual interactions have the positive influence on addiction and that flow experience has the positive influence on online game. However, self-regulation personality has the negative effect on the addiction of online game, and also the uses and gratifications of the online game have the negative influence on the addiction, too。

"The Evolution of Addiction: A Case Study of Nicotine Dependence." Doctoral diss., 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.24832.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: A variety of studies have shown that the tendency toward nicotine dependence has a genetic component. The work described in this thesis addresses three separate questions: i) are there unidentified SNPs in the nicotinic receptors or other genes that contribute to the risk for nicotine dependence; ii) is there evidence of ongoing selection at nicotinic receptor loci; and, iii) since nicotine dependence is unlikely to be the phenotype undergoing selection, is a positive effect on memory or cognition the selected phenotype. I first undertook a genome –wide association scan of imputed data using samples from the Collaborative Study of the Genetics of Nicotine Dependence (COGEND). A novel association was found between nicotine dependence and SNPs at 13q31. The genes at this newly associated locus on chromosome 13 encode a group of micro-RNAs and a member of the glypican gene family. These are among the first findings to implicate a non-candidate gene in risk for nicotine dependence. I applied several complimentary methods to sequence data from the 1000 Genomes Project to test for evidence of selection at the nicotinic receptor loci. I found strong evidence for selection for alleles in the nicotinic receptor cluster on chromosome 8 that confer risk of nicotine dependence. I then used the dataset from the Collaborative Studies on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) and looked for an association between neuropsychological phenotypes and SNPs conferring risk of nicotine dependence. One SNP passed multiple test correction for association with WAIS digit symbol score. This SNP is not itself associated with nicotine dependence but is in reasonable (r 2 = 0.75) LD with SNPs that are associated with nicotine dependence. These data suggest at best, a weak correlation between nicotine dependence and any of the tested cognitive phenotypes. Given the reproducible finding of an inverse relationship between SNPs associated with risk for nicotine dependence and cocaine dependence, I hypothesize that the apparently detrimental phenotype of nicotine dependence may confer decreased risk for cocaine dependence. As cocaine use impairs the positive rewards associated with social interactions, reducing the risk of cocaine addiction may be beneficial to both the individual and the group.

Morphine has been widely used as one of the most potent and effective analgesics in clinics. However, the utilization of morphine was limited due to the development of tolerance and dependence after its long-term treatment. Morphine dependence includes physical dependence and psychological dependence. The physical dependence could be partially attenuated by certain drugs, such as clonidine and anti-depressants. But the psychological dependence, so far, lacks of effective drug for its treatment. Because of the property of morphine to induce strong euphoria, morphine has been seriously abused for non-therapeutic purpose. Although the psychological dependence seems to be seldom observed under the rule of clinical use, it has been recognized as the most important factor of relapse for morphine addicts. To investigate the possible psychological effects of morphine, a number of experimental methods have been developed and employed. Among the methods, the measurement of conditioned place preference (CPP) was commonly used to examine the possible rewarding from drugs. In 1996, Del Pozo et al. reported that the NMDA antagonist, MK-801 could suppress the CPP induced by morphine. The drug to be investigated in the present study, dextromethorphan (DM), is a non-competitive NMDA antagonist as well. It is generally used as an anti-tussive drug and clinically considered to be safe and non-addictive. In addition, DM was also found to be able to attenuate morphine tolerance and withdrawal syndromes when co-administrated with morphine. Therefore, we predict that DM should have substantial interaction with morphine psychological dependence. In the present study, we aim to study the effects of DM on morphine rewarding and to further investigate the possible mechanism. Using various experimental methods, we attempt to find out the answer of the following questions. Can DM attenuate the CPP induced by morphine? What is the effect of DM on morphine tolerance and physical dependence? What is the possible role of DM to interfere the development of morphine addiction? Is there any effect of DM to act on morphine-induced behavioral sensitization? Overall, what are the neurotransmitters (e.g. dopamine, glutamate, and 5-HT) responsible for the effects from DM? To answer the last question, the technique of microdialysis was applied to study the mesolimbic pathway in the brain since the neuro-pathway was proved to be highly related with drug addiction. We targeted at the nucleus accumbens (NAc) for microdialysis, which is an important area receiving many projections from major dopaminergic and serotoninergic pathways. From the results of the CPP experiments, it was found that DM could attenuate the drug reward by morphine. That may also imply that DM could be useful for the prevention of drug-seeking behavior after chronic morphine treatment. From the result of the locomotion experiments, there was no effect observed for DM (10 mg/kg, i.p.) to affect the morphine-induced behavioral sensitization on locomotion. As to the analgesic tolerance, DM showed significant inhibition on morphine tolerance. However, DM (10 mg/kg, i.p.) was unable to significantly reduce the total severity of naloxone-precipitated (4 mg/kg, i.p.) withdrawal syndromes. In the microdialysis experiment, the probe was inserted into the NAc and perfused with aCSF (1 μl/min). The dialysates were collected every 15 min and analysed by HPLC. The concentration of DOPAC, HVA, and 5-HIAA was determined online. It was revealed that the acute administration of morphine could result in a drastic increase of dopamine in NAc, which could be partially attenuated by DM. When morphine was chronically administrated, the acute morphine-induced increase of dopamine was changed to a much lower extent. This phenomenon could be explained by the development of tolerance on morphine rewarding and the change of neuronal sensitivity in the mesolimbic pathway. Moreover, the decrease of dopamine after chronic morphine may possibly make the animal stay in the discomfortable state constantly and further result in the occurrence of drug-seeking behavior. If DM could significantly reverse the decrease of dopamine release, it would be extremely useful for the relief of discomfort and even suppress the drug-seeking behavior. For morphine addicts, DM could be of great potential for clinical use in the near future. In summary, DM may possibly prevent the drug-seeking behavior and analgesic tolerance induced by chronic morphine treatment. But it has no significant effect on morphine-induced locomotive sensitization and possibly even for the physical dependence, under the dosage of 10 mg/kg, i.p.

Abstract:
The objectives of this study were to provide a detailed biopsychosocial description of the characteristics of a sample of 100 individuals screened and referred by the National Responsible Gaming Programme helpline for their outpatient treatment programme over an eighteen month period, and, importantly, to measure the success of this specific treatment programme at set intervals, up to a one year follow-up period. While 80% of the sample did not relapse during the six-week treatment programme, the number of treatment seekers without any gambling relapses during each follow-up period declined, and those falling back into gambling increased as time went on. After one year 47% of treatment seekers managed not to revert back to gambling – total abstinence. A further 28% reported having relapsed once or twice or that their gambling was controlled. 25% of treatment seekers reported that they reverted back to gambling fulltime which leaves the success rate of the treatment at 75%. Treatment seekers reported an overall reduction in gambling participation, debt and expenditure and an overall improvement in social and vocational functioning. There is evidence in this study to support the perspective that pathological gambling is a multidimensional disorder and that certain sub-groups of gamblers have distinct gambling behaviour.

The increasing rate of heroin addiction in female is a universal problem. It is obvious that women are different to the male physically, psychologically and even in social context. However, the present researches on substance abuse are usually concentrated on the general situation and as a result ignore the unique situations of the female heroin dependents. This study therefore tries to fill the gap and focuses on the interaction between the life course of drug-addicted females and their substance abuse behaviors by examining their original family conditions, their relations to partners and friends and their self-opinion of being a drug abuser. This research adopts oral history interview as the main methodology and has interviewed nine female rehabilitants in Yulin Female Detention Center who had used both amphetamine and heroin. They all agreed to join this research project under free will and signed a letter of consent. In order to understand their life course and experience of substance abuse, the nine interviewees were asked to fill up structured questionnaires and the interviews were guided by semi-structured outlines. After data analyzing, it is found: (1) Their parents usually do particular kinds of jobs, such as gambling. Their parents are in divorce and therefore the interviewees have been suffering from estranged relations to the family. (2) Their first use of drugs is normally driven by curiosity, then followed by frustration caused by family conflict, vexation or interrupted education. (3) No matter the primary use or recurrences, female heroin dependants are usually induced by peers or partners, or as a result of depressions or misestimate their capability of rehabilitant. (4) It is hard to break the emotion connection between heroin-addicted female and their partner even the male are in charge of criminal. (5) Advices of rehabilitation from family members or partners have positive influence on them. (6) The interviewees normally share a pessimistic life perspective. It is suggested that the female heroin dependants have to adjust their pessimistic attitudes about life, accept job-training and use social supporting system wisely. As for those having a drug addicted partner, it is recommended that they should strengthen their emotion control and look for a proper substitute. In addition, the government has to design specific supporting system for the female rehabilitants, including baby rearing and subvention during their rehabilitation.

The purpose of this research was two-fold: (1) to examine the relationship among personality, computer games playing places and computer games addiction tendency (CGAT) with Eysenck’s personality model, and (2) to find the risk factors of CGAT and find the best predictors of it with stepwise regression technique. The subjects were 559 students (mean age 20.35) from some classes of the general education courses at the Chung Yuan Christian University. Using Griffiths’ 8-item checklist, each subject was assigned to either the CGAT group or the control group. The other instruments used were the Chinese version of Eysenck Personality Questionnaire and the Computer Games Usage Patterns Questionnaire, which was developed by the researcher. Logistic regression, Chi-square and t test were used to test the hypotheses. The results indicated: (1) Introversion-Extroversion did not predict CGAT. Besides, there was no interaction between Introversion-Extroversion and computer games playing places. But, in the female group, extroverts were apt to have CGAT. (2) Neurotic subjects were apt to have CGAT. (3) Psychoticism predicted CGAT, but it failed to predict this tendency when gender was included in this model. (4) Gender, online game, neuroticism and ‘possessing game machine at home’ were the best four predictors of CGAT. In conclusion, the results of this research suggest that the arousal hypotheses of Eysenck personality model cannot explain the development of CGAT. Neuroticism may be an important personality factor in its development. The implications of these findings and future research directions were discussed.

The spread of Wireless Lan causes a sharp increase in net-using population, and makes users spend more and more time on the Net. However, due to excessively or improperly using the Internet, it also easily causes users to be unable to invest their spirit and time in the real world, and then affects interaction with others in the real world. For teenagers, excessively or improperly using the Internet has an influence on their interpersonal relationships, academic performance, and recognition of social norms. The development of teenagers’ personality is a transitional period filled with storm and pressures, so it is necessary to set up their right ethics to make them have positive attitudes towards lives. Nowadays, there are changes in Taiwan’s cultures, society, economy, etc. Whether it has an effect on teenagers’ meaning of life is an issue which is worth discussing. At present, researches on teenagers’ meaning of life and Internet addiction are not so enough; the researcher hopes to conduct an in-depth study on Internet addiction and teenagers’meaning of life, and then probe into them intensively. According to the researcher’s observation, students’confusion about meaning of life is certainly related to Internet addiction. For them, Internet addiction not only has negative influnences on their academic performance and health of body and mind, but also is a concern to families and the society. If we can seek the reason for this and give them proper guidance strategies at the right moment, it will be believed that it’s beneficial for guidance effectiveness of students and the whole society. This study investigates the relevance between teenagers’ meaning of life and Internet addiction, and discusses how different sex, grades, academic performance, parenting styles, and family conditions affect teenagers’ meaning of life and Internet addiction. This study takes certain complete school in Hsinchu County as the object, and 485 junior and senior high students of 16 classes were selected from the school as the subjects of research. Based on the 485 students’ reaction to the ‘’Meaning of Life Scale” and ‘’ Internet Addiction Scale‘’, the researcher used Descriptive Statistical Analysis, T test, ANOVA, and Pearson product-moment correlation. The main conclusion of this study is the fact that there’s a negative correlation between teenagers’ meaning of life and Internet addiction. Besides, at present, teenagers’ senses of meaning of life conditions are at middle to high level; their Internet addiction conditions are at middle to low level. There isn’t a notable difference in teenagers’ meaning of life for teenagers with different sexes, but there is one in Internet addiction. There isn’t a marked difference in teenagers’ meaning of life and Internet addiction for teenagers in different grades. There is a significant difference in teenagers’ meaning of life and Internet addiction for teenagers with different academic performance, different parenting styles, and different family conditions. The study finally proposes some suggestions according to the research results for reference of future practical application.
