Abstract:
In this chapter we critically review and evaluate the evidence supporting one of the core assumptions of basic and applied research on emotion: the pan-cultural “recognition” of facial expressions of “emotion.” We do so by focusing on the body of evidence, as well as the methods used in emotion perception studies conducted in indigenous, small-scale societies. We also assess the criteria used to interpret the results as supporting evidence for the universality thesis. Finally, we look forward to future research in indigenous societies and outline two potential research paths to advance our understanding of human diversity.

Abstract:
What are the purposes and uses of comparison for the historian? What is the heuristic value of comparing countries, cultures, and societies in the past? And how and why did historical actors deploy comparison in practice? The chapter focuses on two archetypal contemporary and neighbouring societies, France and Britain in the eighteenth century. Instead of the classic comparisons made by philosophers or travel writers, it is the comparisons formulated in situ by a much broader variety of actors that will provide the case studies. Prisoners of war who were complaining about their jailors or criminals who requested asylum resorted to a rich stock of arguments, highlighting the universality of moral norms and legal values that transcended national state borders or the superiority of one national model over another. Ultimately the chapter emphasizes the necessity for historians to engage in a reflexive analysis of what they compare and why.

Abstract:
This article shifts the discussion of race from Afro- to Indo-America, focusing on a corpus of historical studies that underline how Amerindians, anti-Indian racism, and Indigenism have played a central role in the formation of nations and national identities along the mountainous backbone of Spanish America. With the crisis of the Spanish colonial system and the rise of independence movements, emerging elites interested in projects of nation-state formation entered into new forms of negotiation and confrontation with indigenous peoples and their visions for both inclusion and autonomy. While these negotiations differed markedly from those that had earlier taken place between Natives and the colonial state, they were conditioned by the forms of conquest and colonization that had gone before, as well as by emerging political, geographic, military, and economic distinctions among the newly independent societies.
