Abstract:
The image of the dramaturg resembling a stuffy librarian, as opposed to the largely intuitive process of theatre making, belongs to the past. Contemporary theatre performances not only tell a story, but constantly reflect on the world in which that story takes place and is shown. As a result, dramaturgy has become part of the artistic process. Thus everybody involved in a theatre production is concerned with dramaturgical thinking, i.e. how to relate to material, process, audience and society. The dramaturg crosses borders between theory and practice, between theatre makers, performance and audience. Dramaturgy. An Introduction provides a broad overview of the concept of dramaturgy and the profession of the dramaturg. It is intended for students and teachers of theatre and performance studies, but also for directors, scenographers, actors and for all lovers of theatre.

Abstract:
This book appraises the multiple experiences connected with the dramatic activities of a group of students on two degree courses in the Faculty of Arts in Prato, namely: the three-year course in artistic events and enterprise management and the two-year course in music, art and textile production. This experiment, which greatly enhanced the creative and organisational skills of the young people, exploited theatre to inject new blood into the university teaching approach, translating theory into practice. Beyond the textbooks, the Prato theatre workshop experience illustrated here shows how drama can be transformed into an authentic switch point between university and life beyond.

Abstract:
Premiered at the National Theatre and winner of both the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best Play, Alan Bennett’s The History Boys confronts issues of education, sexuality, and peer pressure through a group of boys preparing for their Oxbridge exams. Written specifically for Key Stage 4 students, this GCSE Student Guide offers a critical commentary on the text through an overview of the play and extensive analysis of themes, characters, contexts, dramatic technique, critical reception and related works. In addition, there is a section on how to write about the play, a glossary of dramatic terms and new interviews with Alan Bennett and the play's original director, Sir Nicholas Hytner. Throughout the guide are suggestions for activities and exercises pitched at the GSCE student, making this an indispensable resource for anyone studying the play at this level.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 7, ‘Inventing New Forms of Political Theatre’, covers the 1960s and 1970s. It situates the chosen productions in the socio-political climate of the GDR—that is, within the discussions on the leadership of the Party—and in the Federal Republic of Germany, where the anti-authoritarian movement, the student movement, and the emergence of the Red Army Faction provide the context. The aesthetics of Benno Besson’s Oedipus Tyrant (1967, East Berlin), Hansgünther Heyme’s Oedipus (1968, Cologne), Hans Neuenfels’ Medea (1976), and Christoph Nel’s Antigone (1978, both in Frankfurt/Main) is evaluated in terms of their contribution to this discussion and their political stance. The last three productions serve as examples of how the Bildungsbürgertum—still the majority of the theatregoers in West Germany—wanted the politicization of theatre to be not merely justified but mandatory.

Abstract:
This chapter introduces the book as a primer for radiographers working in theatres, and as a quick reference guide to cases that they may be unfamiliar with. Perfoming imaging during surgical procedures is one of the most common functions of radiographers, yet there is a dearth of available information on this topic. Radiography practice (including theatre imaging) is often learned on-site at teaching hospitals, concluding with a practical assessment once students have gained enough experience. However, the long duration of many surgical procedures coupled with limited placement time prevents many students from gaining exposure to sufficient numbers of procedures. In addition, similar procedures may vary widely depending on the surgical requirements of each case. This book is aimed at helping students and recently qualified radiographers in improving their knowledge and skills while not on theatre placement.
