Abstract:
This study contributes to the history of social changes in Iran during the Abbasid Caliphate (AH 132–656, AD 750–1258) by foregrounding the perspective of Persian language historians – from Abu Ali Bal'ami (AH 363, AD 974), the first known Persian historian, to Atamelak Joveyni (AH 623–681, AD 1226–1283), the great historian of the Mongol Era. By applying the insights of Anthony Giddens and the theory of structuration to address the interactions of social agents and structures, this book provides a coherent narrative of social transformation in medieval Iran.

Abstract:
This chapter excavates Bourdieu’s theoretical insights concerning political sociology to develop a theory of transnational structuration processes. The early Bourdieu implicitly imagined the state as a nationally bounded actor. Only later in his career did he begin to grapple with issues such as globalization, transnationalism, and neoliberalism; and it is this later germ of ideas that this chapter develops. Transnational social fields, this chapter argues, are not reducible to institutional or organizational structures. They require a more holistic analysis of institutions and their underpinnings. To provide an example of how Bourdieu’s political sociology can be extended to transnational spaces, this chapter considers the case of the European Parliament.

Abstract:
Are information and communication technologies (ICTs) connecting families? And what does this mean in terms of family routines, relationships, norms, work, intimacy and privacy? This book takes a life course and generational perspective covering theory, including posthumanism and strong structuration theory, and methodology, including digital and cross-disciplinary methods. It presents a series of case studies on topics such as intergenerational connections, work–life balance, transnational families, digital storytelling and mobile parenting. It will give students, researchers and practitioners a variety of tools to make sense of how ICTs are used, appropriated and domesticated in family life. These tools allow for an informed and critical understanding of ICTs and family dynamics.

Fried, Andrea, ed. Understanding Deviance in a World of Standards. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198833888.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Standards have become widespread regulatory tools that promote global trade, innovation, efficiency, and quality. They contribute significantly to the creation of safe, reliable, and high-quality services and technologies to ensure human health, environmental protection, or information security. Yet intentional deviations from standards by organizations are often reported in many sectors, which can either contribute to or challenge the measures of safety and quality they are designed to safeguard. Why then, despite all potential consequences, do organizations choose to deviate from standards in one way or another? This book uses structuration theory—covering aspects of both structure and agency—to explore the organizational conditions and contradictions under which different types of deviance occur. It also provides empirical explanations for deviance in organizations that go beyond an understanding of individual misbehaviour where mainly a single person is held responsible. Case studies of software developing organizations illustrate insightful generalizations on standards as a mechanism of sensemaking, resource allocation, and sanctioning, and provide ground to rethink corporate responsibility when deviating from standards in the ‘audit society’.

Powers, Shawn M., and Michael Jablonski. The Economics of Internet Connectivity. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252039126.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the link between information commodification and structuration by focusing on the economics of internet connectivity and the fight over which international institutions are responsible for the regulation of digital information flows. It also discusses the uneven relationship between connectivity and economic growth as well as the economic motivations behind criticism of the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) potential role in internet governance. The chapter first considers how the U.S. government, with the aid of the private sector, wired the world and profited handsomely as a result. It then explains how economies of scale strongly favor established actors in the Internet economy, challenging the idea that increased connectivity is equally profitable for all. It also looks at the controversy surrounding the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT), with particular emphasis on how the negotiations were shaped by economic concerns. Finally, it describes economic externalities, the basis for a “network effect” theory, and suggests an alternative framing to the neoliberal, modernization, and “information sovereignty” discourses that often dominate debates surrounding internet governance.

Chaisty, Paul, Nic Cheeseman, and Timothy J. Power. Cabinet Authority and Coalition Management. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198817208.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines how presidents manage coalitions through the allocation of cabinet portfolios to their party supporters. It discusses the ways in which presidents seek to mitigate the costs of cabinet portfolio allocation—such as policy and agency loss—and the system-level factors (electoral incentives, party system structuration, political democracy), coalition-level factors (‘Day One’ decisions, and the fragmentation and heterogeneity of the coalition), and conjunctural factors (time and crisis) that affect these costs. It also explores cases of cabinet tool deployment in Kenya, Benin, and Ecuador. Finally, it presents evidence from surveys of MPs to illustrate the significance of cabinet tools in coalition management, and to infer the motivation of parties (votes, policy, and the spoils of office) when seeking cabinet posts.
