Abstract:
This work tries to report and estimate some of the most significant evolutions that, under the name of «post-structuralism», have affected contemporary philosophy and culture. But, as the «post-structuralist» appellation seems obviously too general, Deleuze's, Derrida's ans Lyotard's texts are actually, all along this work, more specifically studied. Those texts don't indeed sum up by themselves the whole cultural mouvement. But they widely pass through it, and reflect on most of its components.Consequently, following their trajectories can be a way to come back to those components, from the post-phenomenological receipt of «methodological structuralism», to the most important philosophical works that assume a portion of its inheritance (especially Althusser, Foucault and Lacan), up to the assertion of Deleuze's, Derrida's and Lyotard's own originalities. As this mouvement is frequently said «french», this work also tries to report the international cultural and philosophical context in which it spreads out, and the particular position that it holds. This can lead to underline and estimate the value of its critical dimensions, in the spheres of art, morals or politics

Abstract:
The research subject comprises the structuralistic ideas that found the meaning in contemporary architectural design and realized projects of Lithuania. The research subject provides more comprehensive disclosure of artistic results in architecture and identifies their place within the context of different scientific and artistic disciplines, as well as contemporary architecture on the whole. The main objective of the research is to establish basic artistic principles and conceptions of structuralistic architecture in Lithuania, their geographic and interdisciplinary links, genesis and forms of expression. To this end, the following tasks have been raised: to establish philosophical-ideological background of structuralistic architecture and its links to the social being in the second half of the 20th century Lithuania; analyze the geographical and interdisciplinary context of structuralistic ideas; explore the social-cultural formants of artistic principles in Lithuanian architecture of the 1960-ies–80-ies; prepare theoretical pattern for valuation of structuralistic ideas in Lithuanian architecture; identify the most significant pieces of structuralistic architecture in Lithuania and their influence on general architecture development in the country. In making the research, the following results innovative on the field of architectural science have been obtained: significant phenomenon in Lithuanian architecture, although poorly analyzed before – Structuralism – has been... Abstract:
The central question of this thesis is: what is mathematics about? The answer arrived at by the thesis is an unsettling and unsatisfying one. By examining two of the most promising contemporary accounts of the nature of mathematics, I conclude that neither is as yet capable of giving us a conclusive answer to our question. The conclusion is arrived at by a combination of historical and conceptual analysis. It begins with the historical fact that, since the middle of the nineteenth century, mathematics has undergone a radical transformation. This transformation occurred in most branches of mathematics, but was perhaps most apparent in geometry. Earlier images of geometry understood it as the science of space. In the wake of the emergence of multiple distinct geometries and the realization that non-Euclidean geometries might lay claim to the description of physical space, the old picture of Euclidean geometry as the sole correct description of physical space was no longer tenable. The first chapter of the dissertation provides an historical account of some of the forces which led to the destabilization of the traditional picture of geometry. The second chapter examines the debate between Gottlob Frege and David Hilbert regarding the nature of geometry and axiomatics, ending with an argument suggesting that Hilbert’s views are ultimately unsatisfying. The third chapter continues to probe the work of Frege and, again, finds his explanations of the nature of mathematics troublingly unsatisfying. The end result of the first three chapters is that the Frege-Hilbert debate leaves us with an impasse: the traditional understanding of mathematics cannot hold, but neither can the two most promising modern accounts. The fourth and final chapter of the thesis investigates mathematical structuralism—a more recent development in the philosophy of mathematics—in order to see whether it can move us beyond the impasse of the Frege-Hilbert debate. Ultimately, it is argued that the contemporary debate between ‘assertoric’ structuralists and ‘algebraic’ structuralists recapitulates a form of the Frege-Hilbert impasse. The ultimate claim of the thesis, then, is that neither of the two most promising contemporary accounts can offer us a satisfying philosophical answer to the question ‘what is mathematics about?’.

Abstract:
This study presented a comprehensive review of Kenneth Waltz's structural realism of international politics. Waltz pursues parsimonious theory by adopting elegant definitions of structure. His neorealistic approach is an impressive intellectual achievement. It is an elegant, simple, deductively rigorous instrument geared for scientific contribution. Yet this pure structural realism provides an insufficient basis for explaining international relations. Neorealism is one presentation of reality among many. It does not pretend to reflect all realities. Thus, I suggest that we adopt the complex interdependence concept as a thought experiment regarding that which international politics might look like if the basic assumptions of realism were revised and how we overcome inefficient and over-consumptuous control of great powers that defend the status-quo via the excuse for international stability.

Allan, Neil Peter. "Kafka : phenomenology and post-structuralism." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2001. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/59472/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study seeks to identify a coalition of philosophy and literature in the work of Franz Kafka, and begins with a grounding of his output in the philosophical context from which it emerged. This relatively under-researched philosophical backdrop consists in Kafka's study, at university and in a discussion group, of philosophical positions derived from the "descriptive psychology" of Franz Brentano. Kafka was hence conversant with several philosophical agendas, notably those of logic, Gestalt psychology, and a nascent form of phenomenology, which all derived their impetus from Brentano's work. The initial issue, therefore, is that of assessing the extent of a purported influence of such theories on Kafka's texts. What emerges as a "strategy" of Kafka's work is the aesthetic exploitation of such positions; a tactic which constitutes an almost parodistic subversion of these early forms of phenomenological thought. Thus on the one hand it is implied that the narrative technique of Kafka's work, and in particular the representation of consciousness and its "world", is derived from Brentanian thought, and on the other that this influence is modulated in a specific direction, which renders these texts so singularly amenable to post-structuralist thought. My project consequently proceeds to examine the post-structuralist response to Kafka while juxtaposing this analysis with the grounding of his work in proto-phenomenology. Central to this stage of the study are Blanchot, Derrida, Foucault, and Deleuze and Guattari, and the scrutiny of their perspectives will be organized by the themes of authorship, interpretation, power, and desire. The exploration of the "deconstructive" standpoint, represented primarily through Blanchot and Derrida, will be guided by an account of why such a stance seems to be accommodated so readily by Kafka's work, and also of the extent to which his texts could be said, on the basis of the influence of Brentanian thought, to resist such appropriation.

Lesic-Thomas, Andrea. "Barthes, Bakhtin, structuralism : a reassessment." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2001. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/1491.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is a comparative analysis of the shared ideas and concerns in the works of Mikhail Bakhtin and Roland Barthes from the point of view of differences between French and Slavic literary structuralisms. Its background argument is that the structuralism developed in the later works of the Russian Formalists and by Prague Structuralists and Soviet Semioticians is more historically and socially oriented than its French version, defining the structure of a literary work as a system of all of its elements and effects (even those that take us outside of the text, like literary tradition and historical and political circumstances). In this sense, Bakhtin can be seen as a part of the Slavic structuralist tradition (and not opposed to it as is often claimed), and Barthes (seen throughout his career) is on the whole perhaps closer to the Slavic structuralism than he is to the French. The particular problems discussed are those of the relationship between literature and ideology, the notions of intertextuality, heteroglossia, dialogism and polyphony and the differences between them, and the role of the author. Barthes and Bakhtin shared a lifelong interest in the role of ideology in literature and the influence of authoritarian language or myth on culture in general and the literary text in particular. They looked for ways in which the deadening effect of the mythological (epic, monological) thought and word can be counteracted through literature, and different versions of what Kristeva termed 'intertextuality' played an important part in their treatment of the subject. They also both discussed the role of the author and their voice in the literary text, and the question of their power over the text, its characters (Bakhtin) and the reader (Barthes). The main thread of Barthes and Bakhtin's thought focuses on the problem of counteracting authoritarian language through literature, and the solutions they proposed can fruitfully be seen in the light of Slavic structuralism's notions of literary structure.

Abstract:
Frege's arithmetical-platonism is glossed as the first step in developing the thesis; however, it remains silent on the subject of structures in mathematics: the obvious examples being groups and rings, lattices and topologies. The structuralist objects to this silence, also questioning the sufficiency of Fregean platonism is answering a number of problems: e.g. Benacerraf's Twin Puzzles of Epistemic and Referential Access. The development of structuralism as a philosophical position, based on the slogan 'All mathematics is structural' collapses: there is no single coherent account which remains faithful to the tenets of structuralism and solves the puzzles of platonism. This prompts the adoption of a more modest structuralism, the aim of which is not to solve the problems facing arithmetical-platonism, but merely to give an account of the 'obviously structural areas of mathematics'. Modest strucmralism should complement an account of mathematical systems; here, Frege's platonism fulfils that role, which then constrains and shapes the development of this modest structuralism. Three alternatives are considered; a substitutional account, an account based on a modification of Dummett's theory of thin reference and a modified from of in re structuralism. This split level analysis of mathematics leads to an investigation of the robustness of the truth predicate over the two classes of mathematical statement. Focussing on the framework set out in Wright's Truth and Objectivity, a third type of statement is identified in the literature: Hilbert's formal statements. The following thesis arises: formal statements concern no special subject matter, and are merely minimally truth apt; the statements of structural mathematics form a subdiscourse - identified by the similarity of the logical grammar - displaying cognitive command. Thirdly, the statements of mathematics which concern systems form a subdiscourse which has both cognitive command and width of cosmological role. The extensions of mathematical concepts are such that best practice on the part of mathematicians either tracks or determines that extension - at least in simple cases. Examining the notions of response dependence leads to considerations of indefinite extensibility and intuitionism. The conclusion drawn is that discourse about structures and mathematical systems are response dependent but that this does not give rise to any revisionary arguments contra intuitionism.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis involves an investigation of the value of traditional and self-generated fairy tales for children's educational and emotional development. The study draws on theories of analytical psychology and on models derived from structuralism. An analysis of two Icelandic traditional fairy tales, Golden Tooth and The Story of Princess Pussycat, is undertaken on a psychological and a narrative level. A comparison is made between the narrative structure of the tales and the structure of psychic processes identified in them. The study is taken further with an analysis of eleven fantasy tales generated during a field study by a group of ten to eleven year old Icelandic children. The mode of expression of the tales is also compared to the style, motifs, notion of time, setting, and characters, as they appear in traditional Indo-European fairy tales. The variants of the two traditional fairy tales analysed originate from Fljötshlic' a region in the south of Iceland. A study of the background, upbringing and personality of four women, who shared and brought further the story telling tradition in this area, is undertaken with the aim of throwing light on the nature of fairy tales and their transmission. The study suggests that patterns operating in the process of individuation, that is differentiation, transformation and integration, are embedded in the structure of traditional fairy tales. Furthermore it is proposed that this theory can be expanded to tales of fantasy generated by children of today. It is argued that the manifestation of these patterns in fairy tales embodies qualities that invite a creative operation in the interaction of children's conscious and unconscious psyche, thus simultaneously stimulating their directed and undirected modes of thinking, which is essential for the development of the creative, individual personality

Ajam, Aladdin. "An holistic approach to architectural theory and structuralism." Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/26546.

Full text
Abstract:
The author's interest in this subject emerges from seeing the environment as a whole, consisting of entities which are systems for transformation and which are responsible for the evolution of society. The approach comes from the mutual interaction of man and the environment. This interaction is expressed in many cases by building concepts, rules and theories. Architecture is considered one of the obvious means of this type of interaction by which man, over time, tried to clarify this interaction by building his shelter to accommodate his different life activities. This led to the creation and establishment of rules, constraints, and then theories in architecture that control this interaction. Architecture cannot be seen as a synchronic phenomenon but it is diachronic and in a continous evolution and development. There is a distinction between what one can see in the environment as surface structure and the embedded meaning and symbolism of deep structure. In order to analyse this distinction, the research adopts structuralism as an holistic tool to address this relationship within the environment. For this reason, architectural theories and structuralism are the two pillars to build and test the statement of the study that leads to the provision of an holistic approach to architectural theory based on structuralism. The study takes an empirical approach to test and confirm the holistic approach, hence, it adopts a methodology to analyse and interpret the case study entities. This methodology follows two main approaches to fulfil these objectives: Deductive: A theoretical investigation of the ideas of the interaction between man and the environment which leads to emphasising environmental entities as systems for transformation. This premise leads to the adoption of structuralism as an holistic method and as a tool for the better understanding and analysis of these entities. Inductive: An empirical approach takes Salt city in Jordan as a case study area. This part represents a real field of information and application. The empirical work supports the propositions that architectural phenomena are an embodiment of cultural values and the social structure. The empirical work collected and elicited people's opinions and preferences through an open -ended questionnaire and drawings of cognitive maps. This study helps architects and designers to understand and then analyse the deep structure of the society as a base to design, after taking into consideration the mechanism that connects the surface structure to the underlying cultural values and meanings that are responding to people's needs and requirements. This may be achieved in architecture and urban planning through holistic thinking that is based on structuralism.

Abstract:
Structuralist theories of properties state that properties are individuated by their nomological or causal roles. It has previously been suggested that structuralism is incompatible with robust conceptions of qualia. In this paper, I argue that structuralism should be taken as a theory of de re representation, and under this formulation it is able to accommodate qualia as intrinsic, introspectable properties of experiences. I then turn to various thought experiments used by qualia theorists to expand the notion of qualia, and find the majority of these compatible with structuralism as well. I conclude that the structuralists and qualia theorists need not be at odds with each other.

Abstract:
Hilary Putnam's model-theoretic arguments are closely affiliated with arguments for, and against, structuralism. In this thesis I show that this is no coincidence. Internal realism and structural realism are similarly motivated by worries about intentionality, the way that our language and theories "latch onto" the world. Putnam's model-theoretic arguments challenge a traditional epistemological duality thesis that posits an underlying noumenal world beneath the appearances described by our theories. Internal realism and ontic structural realism both deny that there is such a duality. So, one conclusion I draw is dialectical: that there are strong similarities between internal realism and ontic structural realism in both their motivation and their claims. I also address whether ontic structuralists are right to argue that worries about the way that our theories latch onto the world means that we ought to opt for a structural ontology. Might the problem instead lie with the theories' representation of the facts? I consider this question in relation to mathematical structuralism, and argue for an alternative to the ontic structuralist position about mathematics which responds to the same worries about intentionality in terms of the underdetermination of representation, rather than to the structural nature of the objects being described.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis I undertake a critical examination of the work Hirgen Habermas and the poststructuralist thinkers William Connolly, Ernesto Laclau, and Chantal Mouffe and I compare their respective notions of the 'subject' and politics. The objective of my thesis is to use the conceptual distinction between contradictions, dialectical oppositions, and paradoxes to demonstrate three central hypotheses. First, I show that Habermas's charge of 'performative contradiction' levelled against the post-structuralists' supposedly 'totalising' critiques of reason does not hold up to scrutiny, because the post-structuralists acknowledge the paradoxical nature of their ontological foundations. Second, I demonstrate that a simple dichotomy cannot be drawn between the work of Habermas and post-structuralism with him on one side as a rationalist and them on the other as 'anti-rationalists' or 'relativists'. Instead, what I elaborate in this thesis is a complex map of similarities and differences between Habermas and the post-structuralists. For example, I show that on a more straightforwardly political level Habermas shares a number of distinct similarities with the post-structuralist theorists and especially with Mouffe. Indeed, I make the case that Habermas's work cannot be reduced to a form of 'Kantian proceduralism' as it is often said to be. There are in fact distinctly 'Hegelian' elements in Habermas's conception of 'reason' and 'rationality'. Habermas's conception of rationality shares important parallels with the work of Michael Oakeshott, who is a significant influence on Mouffe. Third, I make the case that Habermas's founding principles - despite his claims to contrary - appear to be masking a paradox. I argue that paradoxes have an important place in the in the history of Western philosophy. I show that the acknowledgement of paradoxes has existed alongside the law of noncontradiction, and reconciliation since the ancient Greeks. I conclude the thesis with the suggestion that an 'agonistic' style of democracy is especially conducive to the idea of paradox because it is predicated upon the idea that there is no objective ontological truth or 'complete' identity. Finally, I suggest that it is essential to maintain the distinction between a performative contradiction, a reconciliatory logic, and a paradox, because it is potentially an injustice when a paradox is 'declared' to be resolved and beyond argumentation or contestation.

Abstract:
This thesis concerns the period in which the Cahiers du Cinéma applied an ideological reading to popular film. It highlights the debates and various critical theories concerning social struggles within French, Italian and American cinema from 1973 until 1978. This work analyses the articles published in the Cahiers after Serge Daney and Serge Toubiana began managing the magazine. The changes which then occurred showed an intrinsic desire to revive film criticism after a period marked by the political commitments of the editorial staff (dating back to 1968). This merging of film criticism with a militant approach was achieved through a reading of the ideological intentions hidden within popular cinema. Film was understood by the magazine as a way for the bourgeois class to normalize its conception of the world, society and history. Along with the philosophers Michel Foucault, Jacques Rancière and the historian Marc Ferro, the critics of the Cahiers would go on to refine a historiographical approach of the representation of the working-class masses. From Charles de Gaulle’s France to Valéry Giscard d’Estaing’s election and to François Mitterrand’s socialist program, the editorial staff of the Cahiers du Cinéma focused its analysis on the transformations and fractures which characterized successive governments. This work reflects on the different readings that the critics developed, regarding the editing of historical and documentary films which recorded revolutionary movements like the May 1968 events. It also looks at the way films resorted to archive images, and the political decontextualization of the militant discourse, as well as the social and historical function that the critics of the Cahiers du Cinéma theorized, drawing from films such as Moi, Pierre Rivière..., Le petit Marcel, Milestones or Jonas qui aura 25 ans en l’an 2000

Pike, Stephen Mace. "A model of mind from the perspective of temporal structuralism." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Humanities, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/4624.

Full text
Abstract:
Symmetry and symmetry-breaking have, in the last one hundred and fifty years, become incorporated as central explanatory concepts within the natural sciences and mathematics. An abbreviated review of the incorporation of symmetry within the disciplines of mathematics, physics, philosophy and biology, provides a frame within which to develop of a model of mind. This thesis combines the framework provided by symmetry and symmetry-breaking with a structural understanding of self-referential dynamics in examining the implied Kantian model of mind. It considers that Kant’s assumption of a transcendental self unnecessarily isolates consciousness from being understood as a product of complex natural processes. Kant’s structural model of mind is examined and reformulated in terms of a more fundamental form and process. The space required for any non-reductionist model of mind is proposed as being generated through an enfolding of dimensionality in the occurrence of categorical level symmetry breaking during evolutionary development. The temporally extended function is accounted for in terms of self-referential structural dynamics operating within the primary temporal asymmetry. The model of mind proposed is created through application of naturalistic explanations incorporating symmetry and has attributes that may prove of interest to non-reductionists. The phenomenological geometry established provides a framework to understand the experiential phenomenon of qualia while conforming to the requirements of a natural explanation. Information is conceived as being transmitted inwaveforms propagated across spaces of enfolded dimensionalities through structural framesdemarcating nested spaces and condensing in the synthesis of unity in the object of attention,or image, and returning to distribute, the now reformulated, information outward acrosscontextual frames and spaces. This simplified dynamic is considered to operate at all levels of natural phenomena and involves the reintroduction of Bohm’s concepts of implicate and explicate order. The result is a model of mind employing a minimum structural form and self-referential dynamics that has potential for integration across the discipline theoretic frames of the natural sciences while retaining, for the domain of conscious phenomena, an independent causal significance in terms of a temporal structuralism.

Abstract:
My dissertation develops and defends a broadly Kantian account of perceptual experience. I call this account structuralism. Put briefly, the account holds that perceptual experience has a structure that is the manifestation of its priori content. I defend this account by showing that it provides a unified framework for understanding perceptual intentionality.I develop and defend structuralism by defending three theses. The first thesis is phenomenological. According to this thesis, perceptual experience has proprietary perceptual phenomenal intentionality only if it has a unity structure. I explicate the idea of the unity structure of experience in the process of defending this thesis. The second thesis is epistemic. Put roughly, this thesis holds that perceptual experience provides reasons for perceptual beliefs only if it has a priori content. I develop an account of the a priori content of perceptual experience in the process of defending this thesis. The third thesis unifies the phenomenological and the epistemic theses. According to this thesis, the dynamical unity structure of perceptual experience is the phenomenological manifestation of its a priori content. These three these, in conjunction with some plausible ideas provide a systematic account of perceptual intentionality.

Cardoso, Pinto Miguel Marlon. "À la marge et hors-champ : l’humain dans la pensée de Fernand Deligny." Thesis, Paris 8, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA080020/document.

Abstract:
Since Fernand Deligny’s Works were published in 2007, a rediscovery of this author and his work is taking place. During more than fifty years Deligny worked with children and young people living in the fringes of the society, individuals considered socially maladjusted by the medical, social and juridical institutions. This dissertation aims to reconstitute Deligny’s multiple practical experiences and to systematize his thinking. This task is possible on the basis of a global vision of his work and of the extensive archival work done during this research. We propose to expose how Deligny’s thinking became more precise in the course of these decades and especially after his encounter with mute autistic children. After 1967, Deligny and others settled in Cevennes where they created a network of living places for these children. Without aiming to establish a therapeutic or rehabilitative milieu, they developed an apparatus having a clinical, aesthetic and anthropologic dimension. We propose a detailed analysis of this apparatus, which includes the writing, the cartography and the shooting of films, in order to grasp the approach chosen by Deligny to live with these children. Furthermore, we propose to see how research was continually undertaken within these practices. Thus Deligny was capable of building a very particular philosophical thinking. This thinking, based on the concept of the “human” and a radical critique of every form of humanism, is at the same time very singular and very connected to a large contemporary debate in the anthropologic, psychoanalytic and French philosophic fields

Abstract:
Paul Auster’s City of Glass contains a jumble of identities. In fact, the identities are more numerous than the characters, and consequently, characters have several different identities. Some of these identities are obvious constructs, but with others the degree of construction is less evident. Poststructuralist theory, however, puts forward the idea that these seemingly original identities are in fact constructs to the same level as all others. Thus, this essay argues that there are no original identities; identities are constructed by outer factors. This essay discusses three outer factors contributing to the construction of identities, factors commonly discussed in poststructuralist criticism, these three being language, cultural codes and chance.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I examine the relationship between folk tales and Japanese animation, or anime. In spite of the popular association between animation and adolescence, animated television series and films have a dynamic and compelling relationship with various age groups and nationalities. Additionally, anime and animation draw liberally from a number of folk tale traditions. Consequently, in this essay, anime is understood as a global phenomenon that draws on international cultural elements and is consumed in several international markets. Before entering an analysis of the use of folk tales in anime, a history of animation and the place of anime within a Japanese and global matrix is provided. This history not only looks at the development of anime, its connection to Western cinema and animation studios, but also its connection to other Japanese artistic genres, such as manga. Once this foundation is established, it is possible to connect anime with folk tale scholarship in chapter two. This chapter explores this connection in three ways, namely similar content, structure and function. Chapter three builds on the analysis in the preceding chapter and examines the ways anime, as a visual, televised, episodic series, builds on and alters the folk tale tradition. This is primarily explored through the use of visual storytelling techniques and the proliferation of advanced technology. Additionally, this chapter addresses a major point made against the use of folk tales in mass media, specifically the loss of variation. The final chapter concludes and summarizes the ideas, and analysis throughout the thesis. It is in this final chapter that suggestions for further research can be found. This thesis looks not only at the use of folk tales and folk tale characteristics in new media, such as anime, but how these new media contribute to and help to pass on folk tale traditions. Ultimately, this paper suggests anime is an example of a contemporary form of tale telling, which draws on traditional elements as well as catering to a contemporary audience.

Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes post-structuralist theses concerning the literary work's potential for political critique and impact. By placing contemporary claims as to the inevitably oppressive or ineffectual character of the literary work next to the texts and reception of novels by John Dos Passos, James T. Farrell and Richard Wright, I examine whether such claims can account for the political achievements of actual literary works. Locating in Dos Passos's U.S.A., Farrell's Studs Lonigan and Wright's Native Son instances of an effective oppositional literature, I argue against the post-structuralist position and for a reconsideration of the Sartrean assertion of the "negative," and thus potentially critical and oppositional, agency of writers and readers, and thus, too, of the literary work. In using a particular case study as a corrective both for recent theory and for the excesses of Sartre's own arguments for "committed" writing, "Crisis and Dissent" contributes both to on-going critiques of post-structuralism and to recent re-evaluations of Sartre's own literary theory.

Wallden, Rea Emilia Alexandra. "In between and outside : deconstruction and structuralism on semiotics and its limits." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2008. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54510/.

Full text
Abstract:
The topic of my thesis is the complicated interconnection between deconstruction and structuralist semiotics, developed around the problematic of the sign and its limits. I argue that Jacques Derrida's project of deconstruction can be seen as an extension of the project of structuralist semiotics in two ways: on the one hand, it extends the applicability of its principles beyond the semiotic realm on the other, it investigates its conditions of possibility. Thus, to a significant extent, deconstruction develops on the basis of structuralist semiotics it needs structuralism both as its own foundation and as its exemplary object. I investigate the way deconstruction affects the structuralist definition of signification and its epistemological implications. Louis Hjelmslev and the linguistic Circle of Copenhagen occupy an exceptional position in this context. Derrida's quasi-meta-theory of signification looks in some ways very much like Hjelmslev's stratification, put into motion and thrown out of balance, flattened or multiplied ad infinitum. Moreover, glossematics is probably the closest semiotics can get to posing the question of its limits without exceeding a strictly immanent point of view. Throughout the history of Western metaphysics, signification was defined in terms of mediation and exteriority. Structuralism retains the structure of this definition, while completely emptying it of any metaphysical import. Derrida proceeds to question that same structure nevertheless, he also retains a residue of dualism so as not to fall back into metaphysics. In a dualistic structure, the question of bridging is of utmost importance. Having defined the object of knowledge as constituted by the semiotic articulation, both structuralist semiotics and deconstruction are faced with the structural impossibility of bridging the epistemological gap. Therefore my thesis, which begins as a study of the limits of semiotics, epistemological and other, turns out also to concern the semiological limits of epistemology.

Bertolino, Xavier. "La construction des valeurs par le juge : une étude du discours doctrinal." Thesis, Toulon, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017TOUL0110.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis tempts to clarify the ambiguities surrounding the concept of value, by means of a critical study which focuses on the dominant doctrinal discourse. The clash of values might be a clash of gods according to Max Weber who affirms (in Science comme vocation, 1919) that the sociological nature of cultures is irreducible. For this purpose we do that in a relatively open framework, that of the legal system in the Occident, including the United State of America and some other regional legal organisations like the European legal human right system and the theological system. We think that these ambiguities can be explained by the fact that this doctrine is quite often subject to predetermined issues which limit the focus of its analysis. One of these issues, related to traditional “jusnaturalisme” and to a kind of some legal positivism, is the one which deals with values in terms of integration (or not) of some particular norms in a system which is supposed to be closed or relatively self centred. Such a suggestion can only lead to a dead end. In order to bypass such a dilemma we have adopted a double directive methodology: -Suggesting a dialectical theory of values which enhances the role of the judge, especially that of a constitutional judge, within a constitutional process, with a specific system, sometimes called “system of values”. - Making use of a large set of legal sources, to allow analysis of this process, where the doctrine can be considered not as an authority but as an entity, as Ph. Jestaz and Ch. Jamin call it, considered with relation to other legal sources. In this regard and by means of some basic principles revisited through questions of values (including the principle of democracy) we have managed to provide aspects of a general theory of values by turning it into one of the elements of the people’s legal culture. Legal realism, especially interpretive realism, has a particular significance in this framework, and allows transition from the first to the second part of this thesis. The first part is dedicated to criticism of the existing explicative system, through its philosophical and theological origins, while the second is in fact quite constructivist. Accordingly, reality seems to be a constructed thing, whereas the “real” appears as a given data in an environment where different factors should bring society together, and which the judge should take into account. In conclusion, we have come to distinguish the « real », or said otherwise, the environment and the legal reality, by analysing the relationship that these two terms share with values. The latter terms appear sometimes as specific legal categories (law and principles), while in others as a necessary background for the functioning of the overall

Doney, Jonathan. "'That would be an Ecumenical matter' : contextualizing the adoption of the study of world religions in English religious education using 'statement archaeology', a systematic operationalization of Foucault's historical method." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/18518.

Full text
Abstract:
It is claimed that during the 1960s and 1970s a new chapter in the history of English Religious Education (hereafter RE) began. Christian Confessionalism, whereby children were introduced to, nurtured in, and encouraged to adopt, the Christian faith, was swept aside and replaced by a non-confessional, phenomenological, multi-faith model, in which children were introduced to a variety of World Religions, with the aim that they would become more understanding of and tolerant towards others. Subsequently the study of World Religions (hereafter SWR) was adopted at all phases of the school system. Whilst this transition has been subjected to a wealth of historical analysis, existing accounts concentrate on narrative reconstructions of what happened, rather than investigating the complex interaction of discourses that created circumstances in which the change became possible. By framing analysis within national boundaries these reconstructions also overlook supranational influences. Thus, the supranational ecumenical movement (concerned with achieving greater unity and co-operation between denominationally separated Christian groups) has hitherto been largely overlooked. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s historical methods, I have developed a critical methodology, which examines how certain practices become possible. This method, Statement Archaeology, follows Foucault in emphasizing ‘discontinuities’, ‘statements’, and the search for the ‘relative beginnings’ of particular practices. Deploying the method entailed a detailed forensic exploration of relevant primary, unutilized, sources drawn from relevant domains of ecumenical discourses at both supranational (World Council of Churches) and national (British Council of Churches) levels. These sources were identified by tracing the provenance, and origin, of ecumenical statements repeated within Schools Council Working Paper 36 (1971). A ‘compound’ framework of understanding, combining the notions of Governmentality and Normalization, has been used. The thesis presents a number of original contributions to knowledge. By focusing on the multiple intersections of supranational and national domains of ecumenical discourse, Statement Archaeology reveals a much greater level of complexity than has hitherto been described and exposes a more nuanced understanding of how it became possible for SWR to be adopted, suggesting that the ‘relative beginnings’ of the practice are located—to some extent—in national ecumenical discourses. Further, supranational issues that affected these processes are unearthed, and motivations behind them are exposed, thus highlighting the importance of incorporating ecumenical discourses into the historiography of RE. The research also problematizes some assertions that have become characteristic of the existing historical narrative. Amongst other things, it disputes the existing positioning of Working Paper 36, highlights the problematic positioning of ‘mass immigration’ as a causal factor in adoption of SWR, and exposes a complexity of terminology, none of which appear to have been examined previously. These findings have application both in England and elsewhere, and are briefly discussed in relation to two other national contexts where approaches akin to SWR have been adopted. Finally, the limitations of the study are discussed and recommendations made for further work.

Abstract:
Young women who serve time in adult prisons in New Zealand mix with adult prisoners, unless it is not considered safe to do so. If they do not mix, they serve their sentence in relative isolation, unable to participate in programs, recreation or other aspects of prison life. This is in contrast to male youth in prison who are placed in have specialised youth units to mitigate against the perceived negative effects of mixing with adult prisoners. Using discursive strategies to analyse texts from semi-structured interviews with young women in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) prisons and focus group interviews with iwi representatives, this study offers a challenge to dominant framings of both young and adult women prisoners. The study has shown that young women prisoners’ resilience is likely to be strengthened, and opportunities for health and well-being improved, within stable relationships with adults with whom they relate. Whanau-type structures in prison are in keeping with indigenous values and have the potential to provide mentoring relationships which may broaden the current limited subjectivities experienced by young women prisoners.

Abstract: Shape Grammar, a formalism developed by Stiny and Gips (1972) in the 1970s, has been applied mainly to characterize design languages. It has also been employed in shape synthesis. The present work proposes as a comparative method the use of grammatical rules of a certain language for the verification of similarities in works not belonging to the same language. In case the applicability of the rules is not identified in the analyzed work, in thesis, one could conclude that such influence of the language does not exist, or that this influence is only superficial, not affecting its compositional structure significantly. Some Brazilian modern architecture critics, such as Bruand (1998), Sanvitto (1992b) and Irigoyen (2002), have suggested that Frank Lloyd Wright's prairie houses have influenced João Batista Vilanova Artiga's early work. This study intends to verify this influence through the method described above, which exploits the compositional structure of the models. For this purpose the rules developed for the roofs of Frank Lloyd Wright's prairie houses were applied to the roofs of Artiga's houses, so that they could be compared. Contrary to expectations, it was impossible to prove the compositional influence of one architect on the other using this method. The proposed method proved to be efficient in indentifying architectural influences clearly and objectively. Thus the experiment suggests the possibility of applying shape grammars in architectural education, as an auxiliary method for comparing architectural languages

Abstract:
The continued commitment to and assertion of the primacy of the sovereign state within international relations theory has resulted in a discourse which theorizes and examines only those issues and conflicts of international politics which can be made to fit neatly within the prism of the neorealist discourse. As such, there exists a void in the examination of such issues as the nature and possibilities of alternative forms of political community, or into the political and economic effects these alternative forms of political community (such as social, economic, religious and environmental) pose to the traditional state and the envisioning of a global society. The aim of this thesis is two-fold: first, to renew interest and inquiry into the discursive limitations of the neorealist discourse of difference and negation; and secondly, to call attention to how the practical and discursive constraints of the neorealist conception of the state as political community effects the ability of international relations theory to address current conflicts and issues on the international stage. The intent of this analysis is to spark a renewed interest in exploring not only the emergence of new forms of political community but the possibility of being able to speak about these new forms within a discourse of international relations. Only through a commitment to the critical examination of its discourse can international relations theory uncover new ways to re-envision such concepts as political community and international politics.
