Abstract:
The Industrial Relations Commission of Victoria and its Conciliation and Arbitration Boards were established by the Industrial Relations Act 1979. The Act introduced some fundamental structural and procedural changes into the Victorian system, though the traditional emphasis on an informal and participatory approach to industrial regulation, which had made the system so distinctive, was preserved. Since 1979 many amendments to the Act and procedural changes to this system of industrial relations have been made. A number of the changes to the system may be characterized as cosmetic, as they do not affect the informal approach of the system. Others, however, are more intrinsic to the system, altering the structures, powers and operations of the tribunal. This paper examines the circumstances under which change has occurred, and it is argued that, in overcoming operational and jurisdictional problems, the changes of the last ten years have introduced a degree of formality into the Victorian Commission.

Abstract:
This research outlines the fluctuation in confirmed active cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), as related to the changes in the Victoria state government’s rules and restrictions. Further, this study examines the impact of government restrictions on the performance of construction in Victoria, Australia. The data analyses in this paper identify the specific effects on industrial production, during the different lockdown stages, in three local construction companies. Companies were selected from different points along the supply chain. Company A is a supplier involved in the manufacturing of structural steel. Company B conducts logistics and procurement. Company C is a construction engineering business specializing in foundations. After reviewing relevant case studies and theories, data analyses were developed in collaboration with these companies. The results revealed that the impact of restrictions on the workers on individual construction projects was not significant. Stage 4 restrictions (Victoria’s highest lockdown level) significantly impacted overall income by limiting construction to only servicing essential infrastructure or essential businesses. The novel contribution of this study is the data analysis outcome for Victoria, where a high level of restrictions were experienced, such as curfew and enforced isolation at home, relative to other countries. In 2021 and 2022 (omicron variant dominated), Victoria was again at the brink of an infection wave, which showed a similar pattern to July 2020, and endured the world’s longest COVID-19 lockdown. The research findings contribute to the body of knowledge by providing empirical data analysis of each company, representing the economic impact of ordinary small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in construction.

Abstract:
This paper emphasises the importance of locating contemporary abolitionist social movements within a continuum of broader struggles against structural injustice. Previous decades have seen the re-emergence of women’s penal reform programmes framed as progressive solutions for alleviating the structural disadvantages and harms associated with imprisonment. Abolitionists have provided fierce critiques of the risks these pose in reinforcing the legitimacy and scale of imprisonment. However, we have yet to articulate a clear vision regarding the utility of reform in relation to decarceration strategies. In presenting a critical exploration of anti-carceral feminist campaign work in Victoria, Australia, this paper advocates the need to move beyond the simplistically conceived dualism of reform and abolition. The analysis explores how anti-carceral feminists have used reform as a resistance strategy within Victorian anti-discrimination campaigns in the 1980s and 1990s. Placed in historical context, these campaigns demonstrate the transformative possibilities and risks associated with the necessary navigation and pursuit of reformist strategies that is fundamental to a politics and practice of abolition.

Abstract:
International data and data from a major household travel survey undertaken in Melbourne, Victoria—the Victorian Activity Travel Survey (VATS)—are used to address the following questions: ( a) to what extent can older people meet their own transportation needs when they cannot drive, and ( b) what special safety concerns are raised now and in the future by the growing number of older drivers. VATS data show that Australian travel patterns parallel those observed in other developed countries: older people are increasingly more reliant on the car. The number of trips that will be lost when they must give up or reduce driving is substantial. Policy makers must start now to understand the dimension of the problem and the ways in which it can be addressed.

Abstract:
Objective: Australia adopted a national mental health strategy in the early 1990s and each State has had to go through its own implementation process in the intervening years. The present paper describes the process of reform in services in Victoria, and ventures explanations as to why the process may have been more comprehensive and successful than in other States. Conclusions: Victoria adopted a Statewide ‘framework’, defining structural elements of area-based services, with rational resource distribution. A transitional process involving a population health approach and relatively rigid implementation of a tightly specified service framework, within a political environment that favoured strong health services management, was successful in achieving desired structural reforms in this State. This was undoubtedly at the cost of promoting a model of public mental health service delivery that is generally rationed so as to accept only a restricted range of types of referral. New initiatives from the current State government are explicitly targeted to correcting this situation.

Abstract:
Health promotion has proved to be crucial in most areas of health, for example, cardiovascular health, cancer control and injury prevention. However, mental health promotion has hitherto been a very poor cousin by comparison with funds spent on other health promotion areas, and also by comparison with funds spent on mental health services. This situation is understandable. First, there has been a need to shake mental health services out of antiquity to ensure that they not only meet fundamental standards of human rights, but also begin to develop a focus on rehabilitation. Second, the amorphous, unspecific and often haphazard nature of the few existing mental health promotion programs has, to a degree, given mental health promotion a bad name. As mental health promotion initiatives must inevitably relate to social and structural issues, the health content of mental health promotion has sometimes been hard to identify.

Abstract:
Aspects of ecology and reproduction of small mammals in a heathland community near Anglesea were investigated in the field by means of mark-recapture trapping. Population size, animal movements and reproductive state were estimated. The floristic and structural habitat preferences were also determined. The most common species were Antechinus stuartii, A. minimus maritimus, Sminthopsis leucopus, Rattus fuscipes assimilis and R. lutreolus. For Antechinus the populations were maximal throughout February-June (A. stuartii) and December-June (A. minimus) inclusive. A marked decline in numbers of Antechinus during late winter and early spring was associated with the total loss of males from the population. The maximal numbers of animals (per hectare) were 21 (A. stuartii), 14 (A. m. maritimus), 14 (R. f. assimilis) 7 (R. lutreolus), and 8 (S. leucopus). Young were born to A. m. maritimus during August, and 1 month later to A. stuartii. R. f. assimilis bred during late winter and spring, and S. leucopus from September to November. None of the species showed an overall preference for any floristic or structural vegetation type. This study confirms male 'die-off' in A. m. maritimus. The data also indicate that the difference in breeding times of A. m. maritimus between Anglesea and Dartmoor, Vic., is due to climatic or habitat differences rather than to sympatry with A. stuartii.

Abstract:
This study examined the leadership practices of a sample of network and hospital administrators in metropolitan Victoria, Australia. It was undertaken in the mid-1990s when the State Liberal-National (Coalition) Government in Victoria established Melbourne's metropolitan health care networks. I argue that leadership, and the process of leading, contributes significantly to the success of the hospital in a time of turmoil and change. The sample was taken from the seven health care networks and consisted of 15 network and hospital administrators. Bolman and Deal's frames of leadership - structural, human resource, political and symbolic - were used as a framework to categorize the leadership practices of the administrators. The findings suggest a preference for the structural frame - an anticipated result, since the hospital environment is more conducive to a style of leadership that emphasizes rationality and objectivity. The human resource frame was the second preferred frame, followed by the political and symbolic. These findings suggest that network and hospital administrators focus more on intellectual than spiritual development, and perhaps this tendency needs to be addressed when educating present and future hospital leaders.

Abstract:
Abstract As the population in Victoria continues to grow, there has been a corresponding increase in building approvals across the State. Houses characterised as low-rise residential buildings often take the largest share of these approvals, with incessant residential building activities being driven by record low interest rates. Low-rise residential buildings comprise various building forms that use a number of specified construction materials to construct the building envelope and other structural and non-structural elements. As materials used for constructing residential building envelopes continue to evolve, these materials must be fit for purpose, and satisfy design criteria and performance requirements, while being aesthetically pleasing. This research analyses the trend in construction materials used in building envelopes of low-rise residential buildings using data from building permits issued between 1996 to 2019. The trend analysis shows that traditional double brick wall systems and suspended timber floors have reduced in popularity for houses built in the 21st century. The analysis also shows that brick veneer wall cladding systems built over slab-on-ground footings is the dominant construction form while the roof cladding material is influenced by geographical location. Insights from the data analysis indicate very little innovation has emerged in materials for residential building envelopes despite its crucial role in providing thermal comfort for inhabitants. Results from this research will serve as a basis to provide quantitative assessment of the trend in materials resource; provide insights about the impact of new building envelope products on existing industries; and perspectives on materials for future building envelopes.

Abstract:
Although the Otway Basin is oriented west-north-westerly, and previously recognised major structural elements follow a similar trend, other structural trends have been found on recently obtained geophysical data.In 1989, an aeromagnetic and radiometric survey of the onshore Otway Basin was completed for the Victorian Department of Industry and the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics. This survey, together with a recent gravity compilation by the Geological Survey of Victoria, enables analysis of magnetic and gravity data trends reflecting basement and intra-basin structure. The trend analysis was carried out using modern image processing techniques including simulation of real-time sun-angles of the magnetic and gravity data, and composite images of the radiometric data, to highlight lineaments. This technology enables integration of magnetic, gravity, radiometric and, potentially, seismic, Landsat, topography and bathymetry data for basin structure analysis. The magnetic, gravity and radiometric trend analysis was compared to an earlier Landsat study (Baker, 1980) and a previous seismic data compilation of the Otway Basin (Megallaa, 1986).The present study has revealed the significance of major early Palaeozoic north-south and east-north-east to easterly trends. The latter trends have not previously been identified or discussed in earlier basin reviews. There appears to be a difference between trends reflected in the radiometric and seismic data and trends apparent in the gravity and magnetic data. This could indicate a change in principal stress directions during the evolution of the basin. The shape of the northern margin of the basin appears to be controlled by major north-easterly structures.

Abstract:
The impacts of active transportation planning on equity are often overlooked, potentially leading to disparities in who receives benefits of infrastructure investment. This study examined income inequalities in spatial access to bicycling infrastructure in three mid-sized Canadian cities: Victoria and Kelowna (British Columbia), and Halifax (Nova Scotia), using non-spatial and spatial methods. We compiled municipal bicycling infrastructure data and calculated access to bicycling infrastructure (m/km2) for dissemination areas (DAs) within each city. We analyzed trends in access across median household income quintiles, and characterized spatial patterns using a local measure of spatial autocorrelation. DAs in Kelowna ( n = 168) had the greatest access to infrastructure (median infrastructure = 2,915 m/km2), followed by Victoria ( n = 386 DAs; median = 2,157 m/km2), and Halifax ( n = 312 DAs; median = 0 m/km2). Lower income areas in Victoria and Kelowna had greater access to infrastructure compared with higher income areas. The majority of DAs in Halifax had no infrastructure (59%), consistent across income quintiles. Spatial pattern analysis identified clusters of low income areas with poor access in each city, which may be targets for strategic, equitable investment. Although in many cities bicycling infrastructure planning is not driven by equity considerations, there is increasing political pressure to ensure equitable access to safe bicycling. Measuring and mapping trends in access to transportation resources from an equity perspective are requisite steps in the pathway toward healthy, sustainable cities for all.

Abstract:
To understand where driver training should focus to contribute to improving the safety of cyclists, this study compared bicycle-motor-vehicle (BMV) crashes involving novice drivers (under 25 years) with those involving experienced drivers in the Australian states of Victoria, Queensland, and South Australia. Novice drivers were involved in only a small proportion of BMV crashes and were not over-represented on a per-license basis. For both driver groups, most crashes happened on lower speed roads, at intersections, and during the day. In contrast to expectations, the distribution of types of BMV crashes differed little between experienced and novice drivers. The absence of major differences between experienced and novice drivers may result from learning opportunities being too infrequent in low-volume cycling countries, but this hypothesis needs further testing. A comparison between Queensland and Victoria showed three situations with a higher proportion of young driver crashes: in the evening in both states, Right through-opposing directions (Victoria only), and From footway-maneuvering (Queensland only). These patterns are likely to be indicative of young driver experiences. When their time on the road increases, so does their exposure to risk and to challenging driving conditions (e.g., driving in darkness). On the other hand, these patterns may also point to effects of legislation on young driver crashes, for instance cycling on the sidewalk in Queensland. The results suggest that training for novice drivers needs to supplement a wider strategy to improve cyclist safety (including infrastructure and traffic management improvements) and that training needs to be tailored to state-specific conditions.

Abstract:
Experimental seismic reflection profiling was employed for groundwater studies in southeastern Australia. Equipment consisted of a simple engineering seismograph and tape recorder, and data reduction was carried out on a minicomputer using a graphics‐based processing system specifically written for the project. The investigation area is the site of a proposed induced groundwater recharge scheme in which surface water would be diverted to infiltrate aquifers outcropping several kilometers from a bore field which supplies up to half of the drinking water for the city of Geelong. The unconsolidated Tertiary aquifers of the region are known to be interrupted in places by steep normal and reverse faults. Since similar faulting had been inferred along the proposed recharge avenue, the objective of the seismic study was to verify, if possible, the assumption of aquifer continuity along the survey line. The reflection results reveal monoclinal folding in the upper unconsolidated sediments produced by recent movement on bedrock faults. The seismic study confirms that the aquifers are continuous between the proposed recharge and extraction areas despite structural complexity along the recharge avenue.

Abstract:
The paper examines the impact of seasonal influences on Australian housing approvals, represented by the State of Victoria[1] building approvals for new houses (BANHs). The prime objective of BANHs is to provide timely estimates of future residential building work. Due to the relevance of the residential property sector to the property sector as whole, BANHs are viewed by economic analysts and commentators as a leading indicator of property sector investment and as such the general level of economic activity and employment. The generic objective of the study is to enhance the practice of modelling housing variables. In particular, the study seeks to cast some additional light on modelling the seasonal behaviour of BANHs by: (i) establishing the presence, or otherwise, of seasonality in Victorian BANHs; (ii) if present, ascertaining is it deterministic or stochastic; (iii) determining out of sample forecasting capabilities of the considered modelling specifications; and (iv) speculating on possible interpretation of the results. To do so the study utilises a structural time series model of Harwey (1989). The modelling results confirm that the modelling specification allowing for stochastic trend and deterministic seasonality performs best in terms of diagnostic tests and goodness of fit measures. This is corroborated with the analysis of out of sample forecasting capabilities of the considered modelling specifications, which showed that the models with deterministic seasonal specification exhibit superior forecasting capabilities. The paper also demonstrates that if time series are characterized by either stochastic trend or seasonality, the conventional modelling approach[2] is bound to be mis-specified i.e. would not be able to identify statistically significant seasonality in time series.According to the selected modeling specification, factors corresponding to June, April, December and November are found to be significant at five per cent level. The observed seasonality could be attributed to the ‘summer holidays’ and ‘the end of financial year’ seasonal effects. [1] Victoria is geographically the second smallest state in Australia. It is also the second most populous state in Australia. Australia has six states (New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia), and two territories (the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory).[2] A modelling approach based on the assumption of deterministic trend and deterministic seasonality.

Abstract:
As part of the Victorian Gas Program, new geological modelling of the Cretaceous to recent deposits in the Port Campbell Embayment and the Mussel Platform was carried out to investigate fault seal and trap integrity. Structural characterisation of the Late Cretaceous to present-day sedimentary sequence highlights cross-cutting fault trends defining potential structural traps containing Waarre Formation reservoirs. The fault trends are primarily controlled by Cretaceous-Paleogene extension and are reactivated during the Paleogene. Seismic facies in the top seal suggest an N-S environmental shift from open-marine to proximal nearshore marine. The quantification of fault membrane seals suggests that while reservoir-on-reservoir juxtapositions may enable some degree of lateral flow, efficient trapping relying on juxtaposition seal against the Belfast or Skull Creek mudstones is widespread. Fault geomechanics suggests that NW-SE and E-W faults accommodated most of the extensional strain and could have been associated with increased vertical structural permeability; however, there are no leakage indicators to support widespread vertical migration. These results do not support previous assumptions that fault seal integrity and top seal bypass represent a critical and widespread issue within the nearshore Otway Basin.

Abstract:
This article provides a general methodology for calculating the retreat of the coastline and the volume of sand necessary to renourish a beach due to sea level rise (SLR) in the medium-long term. An example is presented, Victoria Beach, and a projection is made for the years 2030, 2040, 2050, and 2100. The results obtained take into account global sea level rise (GSLR), which is worldwide, and local sea level rise (LSLR), which considers climate variability and vertical land movements. Regarding GSLR, data were provided by the projections from IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) scenarios and empirical models, such as Rahmstorf and Pfeffer. The LSLR data came from the tide gauge station located in Cadiz. Finally, the results obtained showed that global warming impacts erosive effects and the subsequent volume of sand required to renourish beaches. The total sea level rise (TSLR) projections indicated for Victoria Beach are relatively higher than the GSLR projections. Even in the best IPCC scenario (RCP 2.6), Victoria Beach presents a significant erosion of 52 m, requiring a volume of sand of 1.0 Mm3 to supply renourishment.

Abstract:
The global agenda for natural resource management espouses the principle that disputes between riparian states are resolved in a peaceful manner. The management of economic security on Lake Victoria transboundary disputes between Kenya-Uganda which are about resources within the maritime zone has been negatively affected by transboundary dispute since resolutions on the same do not focus on the economic security aspect. This paper evaluates the contribution of national fisheries policy implementation to economic security management between Kenya and Uganda. Structural-functionalist, social conflict and John Burton’s conflict resolution theory guided the study. The study employed descriptive research design while purposive and simple random sampling techniques were used to determine samples. Philosophically, the study contributed towards a better understanding of the transboundary disputes and their management as well as forming a basis for future research. Study findings indicated that statutory instruments regulate fishing operations or the conduct of fishing as public revenues of both Kenya and Uganda on Lake Victoria. The study recommends a robust reform in the national policies on fishery by both Kenya and Uganda to militate against the Lake Victoria transboundary dispute and bolster economic security management. The statutory instruments for fishing should be revised to provide an enabling fishing environment for fishers and fish traders.

Abstract:
One of the main risks associated with the underground storage of CO2 is the possibility of leakage from the reservoir to the surface. Among the most likely pathways for CO2 migration are permeable fault systems and highly fractured caprocks. It is thus important to develop a detailed understanding of geometrical characteristics of fault systems to assess the long-term storage and reactivation potential of fault dependent reservoirs. This extended abstract describes the results from a detailed structural analysis of the Rosedale Fault System (RFS) in the Gippsland Basin, Victoria, which is undergoing assessment for CO2 storage, using high-fidelity 3D seismic data. The RFS is a long-lived fault system that has experienced significant reactivation since the late Miocene and continued activity on this fault. Conventional structural mapping has been supported by seismic attribute analyses using a dip-steering cube. The coupling of seismic attribute analysis with fault displacement analysis has enabled the geometry of the RFS to be defined and to delineate associated damage zone. This extended abstract's analysis shows that the RFS is an anastomosing normal fault system that displays lateral changes in the degree of late Miocene-onwards reverse reactivation, which has affected the Latrobe Group and older units. This analysis has also revealed an extensive polygonal fault-system confined to post-Top Latrobe (Eocene) sediments, showing that this component of the stratigraphy is structurally decoupled from the older sedimentary section. This extended abstract concludes by assessing the roles that both the RFS and the polygonal fault system play in fluid migration in the western Gippsland Basin.

Abstract:
Abstract This study looks at the Chinese-learning experiences of six classroom learners who continued to the end of secondary school in Victoria, Australia, through in-depth interviews. Various systemic deterrents to continued Chinese language study are identified by the participants, including: (1) the schooling journey, including transition between primary and high school and disruption from uninterested students in compulsory classes; (2) the curriculum and the learning demands dictated by the form of assessment; (3) the risk of poor assessment results prejudicing post-school study options, in particular because the cohort includes large numbers of home speaker learners. In Victoria, Australia, a large part of what schools provide is dictated by the metasystem of education and the assessments at which it aims. Thus the structural deterrents to Chinese classroom learner continuation identified are within the power of government agencies to change, in order to enable more of these students to continue.

IntroductionThe Nyamwezi and Sukuma area of Tanzania covers about 50,000 square miles from Lake Victoria in the north to the southern edges of Tabora District. The area probably contains between 4 and 5 million people, about one fifth of the total Tanzanian mainland population. The two peoples speak regional variants of a single language—the name Sukuma simply meant ‘northerners’ originally—and they share many common social structural and cultural forms (Abrahams, 1967b).

Abstract:
The water industry in the state of Victoria, Australia underwent significant structural and pricing reforms in the 1990s. Now, attention is focussed on introducing independent economic regulation, and on the sustainable management of water resources. Experience in Victoria, Australia, provides an interesting opportunity to consider the challenges of reconciling independent economic regulation of profit focused businesses while meeting goals for sustainability in the most efficient way. We conclude that effective integration of sustainability and economic regulation requires consideration of the incentives in economic regulation; investment in defining and collecting data and information to support decisions; greater utilisation of market based instruments; wider and extended use of existing evaluation tools and more explicit linking of these tools to decisions about allocation of resources. However we consider that priority should be given to institutional arrangements; we consider that reform will be required to align arrangements with objectives and thus facilitate efficient and consistent decision-making.

Abstract:
Recently, Victoria Hattam and William Forbath have separately defended new explanations of the development of the distinctive, relatively apolitical labor movement in the United States. Their explanations differ from earlier accounts that saw the failure of socialism in the United States as the result of either the distinctive liberal tradition in the United States or of ethnic and other divisions within the working class. Their alternative view is that distinctive structural features of the U.S. state – in particular, the independent judiciary – played a decisive role in shaping the development of the labor movement. This paper questions some of the shared assumptions of these new accounts, focusing on Victoria Hattam's recent book,Labor Visions and State Power. Without denying that the judiciary played an important role in the development of the U.S. labor movement, I want to suggest a different account of the relationship between the judiciary and the legislative and executive branches.

Full text
Abstract:
Perameles gunnii was greatly affected by the introduction of European agriculture to the volcanic plains in Victoria. At Hamilton, agricultural areas possessed little structural complexity and supported a fairly homogeneous composition of pasture species that were generally shorter than 100 mm because of heavy stock grazing. No P. gurznii were caught in agricultural areas at Hamilton. At the Hamilton Municipal Tip, most captures and nest sites occurred where food resources and structural complexity were greatest. Descriptions of 16 diurnal nest sites indicated that a range of natural and artificial materials was used for shelter, including fallen branches, sawn timber, cement culverts, galvanised iron, and scrap metal. Earthworms were most frequently observed in faecal and stomach material, while beetles and crickets were also common. Optimal habitat for P. gunnii was defined by high structural complexity and habitat heterogeneity. Older P. gunnii may usurp optimal habitat and force subordinate adult females into sub-optimal habitat. Associated with their occupation of optimal habitat, older P. gunnii may utilise smaller nocturnal foraging areas. Analysis of the movement of P. gunnii within the Hamilton Municipal Tip indicated that males occupied significantly larger nocturnal foraging areas than females. Mean female and male home ranges (defined by Minimum Convex Polygon analysis) were 1.6 ha (n = 13, range 0.02-5.9 ha) and 4 ha (n = 18, range 0.8-9.0 ha), respectively. Also, nocturnal foraging areas were analysed on the basis of pattern of use of an area, and these were referred to as utilisation distributions. The mean utilisation distributions (defined by Minimum Area v. Probability [0.95] analysis) for females and males were 0.64 ha (n = 13, range 0.01-4.7 ha) and 4.0 ha (n = 18, range 0.01-19.6 ha), respectively. Mean female and male observed range lengths were 173 m (tz = 26, range 0-364 m) and 249 m (n = 34, range 50430 m), respectively. Mean ( +/-s.e ) observed range length (214+/-20, n = 60, range 50-430 m) was less than half the grid width (500 m), which suggests that grid size did not negatively bias the calculated home-range sizes.

Abstract:
The Torquay Sub-basin lies to the south of Port Phillip Bay in Victoria. It has two main tectonic elements; a Basin Deep area which is flanked to the southeast by the shallower Snail Terrace. It is bounded by the Otway Ranges to the northwest and shallow basement elsewhere. The stratigraphy of the area reflects the influence of two overlapping basins. The Lower Cretaceous section is equivalent to the Otway Group of the Otway Basin, whilst the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary section is comparable with the Bass Basin stratigraphy. The Torquay Sub-basin apparently has all of the essential ingredients needed for successful hydrocarbon exploration. It has good reservoir-seal pairs, moderate structural deformation and probable source rocks in a deep kitchen. Four play types are recognised:Large Miocene age anticlines, similar to those in the Gippsland Basin, with an Eocene sandstone reservoir objective; The same reservoir in localised Oligocene anticlines associated with fault inversion;Possible Lower Cretaceous Eumeralla Formation sandstones in tilted fault blocks and faulted anticlines; andLower Cretaceous Crayfish Sub-group sandstones also in tilted fault block traps.Maturity modelling suggests that the Miocene anticlines post-date hydrocarbon generation. Poor reservoir potential and complex fault trap geometries downgrade the two Lower Cretaceous plays. The Oligocene play was tested by Wild Dog-1 which penetrated excellent Eocene age reservoir sands beneath a plastic shale seal, however, the well failed to encounter any hydrocarbons. Post-mortem analysis indicates the well tested a valid trap. The failure of the well is attributed to a lack of charge. Remaining exploration potential is limited to the deeper plays which have much greater risks associated with each play element.

Abstract:
A regional seismic interpretation was carried out over the onshore Otway Basin in western Victoria to produce two-way time formation top and thickness images and a structural elements map showing the ages of faulting. This interpretation improved the understanding of tectonic events controlling the evolution of the basin and associated hydrocarbon plays. The early development of the basin involved rifting due to NE–SW extension in the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous, producing a number of half-grabens. The rifting conforms with established rift development models, in which half-grabens of alternating vergence are separated by transfer zones displaying complex folding and faulting patterns. Within the northern margin of the basin these half-grabens were filled and rifting ceased prior to the Aptian. An unconformity in the Wangerrip Group has been identified in the basin, corresponding to a change in Southern Ocean spreading rates from slow to fast (52Ma).Compression, resulting in right-lateral wrenching and inversion of previous faults, occurred during the Miocene–Recent.A number of hydrocarbon play types were identified based on the structural mapping carried out. These play types include anticlines associated with transfer zones, tilted fault blocks, buried basement highs, stratigraphic traps, post-Albian horst structures, syndepositional roll-over structures and post-Oligocene normal and reverse fault related structures.
