Abstract:
This study develops a method for estimating the angle of a passively stretched ankle joint from electroneurograms (ENGs) based on structural muscle spindle models of the tibial and peroneal nerves. Passive ramp-and-hold and alternating stretches of the ankle joint are performed on an anesthetized rabbit. Two cuff electrodes are employed to measure the ENGs of peroneal and tibial nerves simultaneously. From the two ENG signals and the joint angle trajectory, two intrafusal muscle fiber models are constructed and their inverse models are derived. The results of the two models are combined to generate the final angle estimate. An optimization method, called sequential quadratic programming, is employed to find the model parameters that minimize the squared errors between the ankle angles predicted by the model and the measured ankle angles. The performance of the proposed approach is compared with those of an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system and an artificial neural network model. The results reveal that the proposed model has the best performance in estimating the ankle joint angle in large-range movements and the smallest tracing error. The proposed method effectively estimates the passive ankle joint angle using the inverse physiological model of an intrafusal muscle fiber.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to assess, by means of available experimental results and numerical simulations, the possible extension of the range of application of the formula proposed by Ruol et al. (J. Wat. Port, Coast. Ocean Eng., 1, 2013), giving wave transmission for chain-moored -type floating breakwaters. The formula is here applied out of the range used for its calibration and even to other types of FBs. The error between predicted and measured values is described and discussed with reference to the main geometrical variables. It appears that the formula performs fairly well for the box-type FB, but not in cases characterized by very different mooring stiffness compared to the one used for calibration. For instance in case of fixed or tethered FBs, the formula significantly overestimates the wave transmission.

Abstract:
The development of safe subunit vaccines requires adjuvants that augment immunogenicity of non-replicating protein-based antigens. Current vaccines against infectious diseases preferentially induce protective antibodies driven by adjuvants such as alum. However, the contribution of antibody to host defense is limited for certain classes of infectious diseases such as fungi, whereas animal studies and clinical observations implicate cellular immunity as an essential component of the resolution of fungal pathogens. Here, we decipher the structural bases of a newly identified glycoprotein ligand of Dectin-2 with potent adjuvancy, Blastomyces endoglucanase-2 (Bl-Eng2). We also pinpoint the developmental steps of antigen-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T responses augmented by Bl-Eng2 including expansion, differentiation and tissue residency. Dectin-2 ligation led to successful systemic and mucosal vaccination against invasive fungal infection and Influenza A infection, respectively. O-linked glycans on Bl-Eng2 applied at the skin and respiratory mucosa greatly augment vaccine subunit- induced protective immunity against lethal influenza and fungal pulmonary challenge.

Abstract:
Nanogels represent an emerging class of drug delivery systems with enhanced renal clearance and serum half-life. However, synthetic polymeric nanogels are immunogenic and less biodegradable than other systems. Protein nanogels, being non-immunogenic; biodegradable; biocompatible; and mechanically, spatially, and temporally tunable, are gaining widespread attention. Elastin, a natural structural component of connective tissue, has enhanced vascular mobility and is highly biodegradable, biocompatible, temperature and pH sensitive, inert in the bloodstream, able to self-assemble, and able to permeate the blood-brain-barrier. In this study, the development of an Elastin Nanogel (ENG) and its functional capacity as a next generation injectable nano-drug carrier was studied. ENG was prepared via an inverse mini-emulsion technique and was characterized and found to be stable at room temperature and cytocompatible with five different prostate cancer cell lines of varied etiologies. Rhodamine-loaded ENG showed enhanced cellular uptake. Blood smear, hemolysis, CBC, PT/APTT, and C3a complement activation assays showed that ENG is vascular tissue compatible and hence meets the objectives of injectable nanogels. The formulated ENG can be efficiently used as an injectable nano-drug carrier for cancer therapy. Moreover, ENG has the potential to encapsulate hydrophobic drugs for targeted drug delivery.

Abstract:
The development of new therapeutics against bacterial infections has aroused great interest over the last years in the context of drug resistance. The starting-point in the pursuit of new antibiotics for which bacterial resistance mechanisms do not exist is the identification of novel cellular targets. Genetics studies in the early 2000s have identified engA as a conserved bacterial gene whose product is a GTPase that could represent a potential drug target: it is conserved among bacteria, essential for cell survival, and absent in humans.Since EngA acts as an assembly factor for the bacterial ribosome, one of our aims was to develop an assay to screen inhibitors of the EngA-ribosome interactions. These interactions are modulated by EngA conformational changes that are in turn triggered by the binding of different nucleotides to the catalytic G-domain. As the interplay between all these events in bacteria is still not resolved, we have used a multi-technique approach to explore these questions in order to obtain useful information for the setting up of a robust screening assay.SAXS and limited proteolysis showed a conformational change occurring in solution upon addition of either di- or tri-phosphate nucleotides. While model validation analysis confirmed the GDP-bound conformation, the GTP-bound state does not match any known EngA structure. Binding studies have revealed modulation of interactions by different nucleotide-bound states. Furthermore, response to nucleotides occurs at high concentrations, suggesting that the role of EngA in promoting ribosome assembly could be monitored by the intracellular nucleotide concentration. Efforts on identifying the GTP-bound state 3D structure by crystallography have resulted in EngA structures in different crystal forms. Although all the obtained structures represent the GDP-bound state, packing analysis has revealed conserved crystal contacts that can potentially stabilise this conformation during nucleation. Specific mutations aiming at disrupting these contacts may help to promote crystallisation of alternative conformations. Cryo-EM investigation has been initiated in order to obtain the structure of the B. subtilis EngA:50S complex. So far, an electron density map at 6.4 Å resolution has been obtained and its interpretation is underway

Abstract: This work presents the study and development of a Structural Health Monitoring technique for identification and characterization of structural damages based on Lamb waves methodology using piezoelectric materials as actuators and sensors. Lamb waves are a form of elastic perturbation that remains guided between two parallel free surfaces. Lamb waves are formed when the actuator excites the structure's surface with a pulse after receiving a signal. When the wave propagates on the structure, it comes in a PZT sensor from different paths. One path is when the wave reaches the sensor directly, i.e. without obstacles in the path in which it propagated. Another possible path is when the wave reaches the sensor after spreads on discontinuities in the structure's surface. Damages can be detected and located through several features of the received signals and with the use of certain techniques of signal processing. In this context, several experimental tests were performed on different kinds of structures. Piezoelectric actuators and sensors networks were attached on the surface of these structures in order to make the Lamb waves configuration. The PZTs actuators excited the structure in high frequency ranges. Different kinds of structural damages were simulated by increasing mass, reduction of stiffness and cuts through the edge of the structures. Four damage-sensitive indexes were used to detect the presence of the damage in the structure: Root-Means-Square Deviation (RMSD), Metric Damage Index (MDI), H2 Norm and Correlation Coefficient Deviation (CCDM). These indices were computed in the frequency domain. The results showed the viability of the Lamb waves methodology for Structural Health Monitoring system using smart materials as actuators and sensors

Abstract: The Structural Engineering is a very important area in civil construction, since its essence is the optimization of designs. To attend the actual necessities, the numerical methods come to be excellent tools, which help professionals to obtain, with more agility, high quality designs, reducing the costs and deadlines. Besides, that structural masonry is a system that satisfies the searching for optimized projects, due to its agility in constructions, with modulated designs, specialized staff and equipments that warrant fast and low costs. In this scenario, this paper deals with numerical proceeding for analyzing the nonlinear behavior of two models of structural masonry beams subjected to bending. One, formed only for "U" blocks of concrete overlapping in two rows; and another, composed of channel blocks in the bottom row and the upper row made of hollow blocks, both models entirely grouted. The beams were discretized with linear regular prismatic finite element, and for the block, mortar and grout it was used the Mohr- Coulomb Criteria, to expect the rupture and reducers of rigidity based on the decreasing of strain modulus. In the end, the obtained numerical results with the presence and absence of reducers of rigidity were compared, with those observed in experimental models developed at the Structural Masonry Study and Research Center, Faculty of Engineering Ilha Solteira Campus, UNESP. The accomplished numerical analys produced satisfactory results for the two beam models, and it has been also possible to observe the increase of rigidity in the beam with channel and hollow blocks.

Abstract: The results of a detailed geologic-strutural mapping in the scale 1:200 are presented for a pilot area (Knawa quarry in the village of Cláudio, state of Minas Gerais). Geologic reconnaissance studies in adjacent areas and GPR surveys were performed to identify geologic structures. The main objective of those works was to guide geologic-structural mapping in the quarry to optimize production of dimension stones. The rocks in the region spam from the highly metamorphic Campo Belo composed of gneissic-migmatites to supracrustal Rio das Velhas supergroup in the geotectonic context of the southern São Francisco Craton. Knawa quarry is located in the domains of the Cláudio shear zone, where predominant lithology corresponds to a banded stronghy migmatized and deformed biotite gneiss showing ligh grey to whitish color, small felsic masses, pink in color and xenoliths of basic and ultrabasic rocks. These rocks predominantly exhibit gneissic to migmatitic structures but are very heterogeneous, allowing to individualise other lithotypes within the framework, as such: banded biotite gneiss (predominant) xenoliths of anfobolite and ultramafic rocks, granite, dioritic bands, pegmatitic veins migmatitic zones, migmatitic veins in shear zones and anfibolitic dykes. From the analysis of the structural and geologic features a sequence of structural events was identified, consisting of three main geologic events in the gneisses (Dn, Dn+1& Dn+2) plus the deposition deformation of the supracrustal and the intrusion of basic dykes. Evaluation and optimization of mining started from the identification of the geologic factors that affect production. These parameters were drawn from the assessment of the geologic map and of the commercial recovery deriving maps of optimized and three-dimensional geologic models. The volume calculation of the fifth level of the quarry identified a total volume of 33731, 28 m3, the volume of sectors with a recovery below 15% equal to.

Abstract: This work was done to determine the Neoproterozoic evolution of a southern Brasilia Fold Belt segment, Tapira area (SW Minas Gerais state), using detailed geologic mapping and structural metamorphic characterization. A complex structural evolution is deduced for these rocks and the main structure recognized is a low angle S4 foliation (N43W/30SE), associated with N50W/10 stretching and/or mineral lineation of the D4 phase. The S4 foliation is a crenulation cleavage, where the pre-existing S2 foliation was folded parallel to sedimentary bedding (S0). In some areas, S4 is a schistosity or a continuous cleavage. The S4 foliation also affects kilometric normal folds of the D3 phase. Two post-S4 groups of folds are recognized with low angle axes and high angle axial planes: D5 and D6 with axes in NW and N-S direction, respectively. Three transcurrent shear zones are associated with the D5 phase, dividing the area into three tectonic stratigraphic domains: Western, Eastern and Southern. Two thrust sheets separated by a thrust fault characterize the Western Domain (WD). Metapelitic rocks and graphite-bearing pelites with metapsammitic lenses represent the thrust sheet 1. A muscovite + quartz + garnet l chlorite l biotite l chloritoid l graphite l albite association defines the rocks of thrust sheet 1 as upper greenschist facies (garnet zone), with T = 540 ºC and P = 7.5 kbar conditions. At the top, thrust sheet 2 is characterized by metapelitic rocks and metapsammitic lenses and hornblende-bearing garnet-muscovite schists intercalations, with metamafic and metaultramafic rocks. The muscovite + quartz + garnet l hornblende l chlorite l biotite l oligoclase and the hornblende + oligoclase + biotite associations suggest amphibolite facies with a range of T= 585 to 610 ºC and P= 8 to 10 kbar. The Eastern Domain (ED) comprises three...(Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract: The study of mineral lineations has been of fundamental importance in the comprehension of tectonic evolution in orogenetic belts. However, in polydeformated areas,, while the newest lineation's orientation can be found, the oldest lineations tend to be obliterated by the newest deformation events. This thesis launches a new methodology to the rescue of mineral lineations' orientation included within porphyroblasts, using the Universal Stage, and testing the methodology in the Elephant Island, Antarctica. It has been made a theorical study, analyzing the behavior of a mineral lineation, considering various hypothesis, like the initial position, different morphologies of porphyroblasts, the possible temporal relationships with the lineation's generator event and various mechanisms of deformation and rotation (or not) of porphyroblasts. The methodology was applied in the study and direct measurement of mineral lineations in porphyroblasts of Elephant Island using the Universal Stage, obtaining an orientation pattern similar to the same structures in the field, proving the validity and viability of the method. The methodology presented is useful in polideformated areas, once that helps to identify the orientation of paleovectors of stress.

Abstract:The studied area in this PhD thesis is located in the northeast portion of Goias State, near Cavalcante Town. Basement rocks of Brasilia Fold Belt, composed basically by Granitic-Gneiss Complex, mega quartz veinz and the Ticunzal Formation, characterize this area. Overlying these rocks are the Araí Group Metassediments. The basement rocks of Brasilia Fold Belt, in the studied area, are strongly deformed, showing a highly structural complexity, which indicate these rocks were submitted by different deformational events. For a better understanding of geological evolution, different techniques and tools to distinguish the deformational events have been applied. The work done defined the identification of five different foliations, which were ordered and separated in three different deformational events because its generations. To refine its events separation, 40Ar/39Ar dating in muscovites belonging in each foliation has been done. The Event denominated generally by "1" presents an EW direction foliation (S1) with a sub vertical dipping. Such foliation was generated as consequence for an NS direction compression. The dating done in white micas formed during this event, yielded a minimum age of 1.5 Ga. The "Event 2", consequence of a close EW direction compression, generated a close NS direction foliation (S2) with vertical dipping. The white micas dating suggest a minimum age of 1.4 Ga for this event. Petrographic analysis indicated rocks that were submitted by the Events "1" and "2", were affected by similar metamorphism conditions, where might have reached temperatures between 450 and 500o C. The mega quartz veins possibly have been generated during the Event "2". Accomplished studies showing that its geometries are conformable with the cinematic aspects found in this event...(Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract:
The filling of the prefield in Modern German is determined by information-structural constraints such as scene-setting, contrastiveness, and topichood. While OHG does not yet show competition between these constraints, competition arises from MHG onward. This has to do with the generalization of the V2 constraint (i.e. the one-constituent property of the prefield) for declarative clauses, in which context the information-structural constraints are loosened. The syntactic change whose result eventually was the loss of multiple XP fronting comprised a change of the feature endowment of C because the fronting of expletive thô (roughly in the OHG of the ninth century) led to the reanalysis of XP fronting as a semantically vacuous movement whose only function is to check the EPP feature of C. Data from doubly filled prefields in ENHG and post-initial connectives indicate that an articulated split CP-structure, as proposed within the cartographic approach, is also at play in German.

AbstractWe present here a criterion to conclude that an abstract SPDE possesses a unique maximal strong solution, which we apply to a three dimensional Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equation. Motivated by the work of Kato and Lai we ask that there is a comparable result here in the stochastic case whilst facilitating a variety of noise structures such as additive, multiplicative and transport. In particular our criterion is designed to fit viscous fluid dynamics models with Stochastic Advection by Lie Transport (SALT) as introduced in Holm (Proc R Soc A: Math Phys Eng Sci 471(2176):20140963, 2015). Our application to the Incompressible Navier-Stokes equation matches the existence and uniqueness result of the deterministic theory. This short work summarises the results and announces two papers (Crisan et al., Existence and uniqueness of maximal strong solutions to nonlinear SPDEs with applications to viscous fluid models, in preparation; Crisan and Goodair, Analytical properties of a 3D stochastic Navier-Stokes equation, 2022, in preparation) which give the full details for the abstract well-posedness arguments and application to the Navier-Stokes Equation respectively.

Abstract:
AbstractThe seminal recognition by Ned Seeman that DNA could be programmed via base-pairing to form higher order structures is well known. What may have been partially forgotten is one of Dr. Seeman’s strong motivations for forming precise and programmable nanostructures was to create nanoelectronic devices. This motivation is particularly apt given that modern electronic devices require precision positioning of conductive elements to modulate and control electronic properties, and that such positioning is inherently limited by the scaling of photoresist technologies: DNA may literally be one of the few ways to make devices smaller (Liddle and Gallatin in Nanoscale 3:2679–2688 [1]). As with many other insights regarding DNA at the nanoscale, Ned Seeman recognized the possibilities of DNA-templated electronic devices as early as 1987 (Robinson and Seeman in Protein Eng. 1:295–300 [2]). As of 2002, Braun’s group attempted to develop methods for lithography that involved metalating DNA (Keren et al. in Science 297:72–75 [3]). However, this instance involved linear, double-stranded DNA, in which portions were separated using RecA, and thus, the overall complexity of the lithography was limited. Since then, the extraordinary control afforded by DNA nanotechnology has provided equally interesting opportunities for creating complex electronic circuitry, either via turning DNA into an electronic device itself (Gates et al. in Crit. Rev. Anal. Chem. 44:354–370 [4]), or by having DNA organize other materials (Hu and Niemeyer in Adv. Mat. 31(26), [5]) that can be electronic devices (Dai et al. in Nano Lett. 20:5604–5615 [6]).

This chapter is devoted to monitoring of central and autonomic nervous system (ANS) in patients with verified sepsis to recognize the specific functional and anatomic changes in the brain and its important autonomic centers which is named sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE). Fluctuation of conscience level from agitation to delirium and coma, muscle tone, and severity of pain syndrome is evaluated with different scales (SOFA, SAPS II, RASS, CAM-ICU, FOUR, PBSS, BPS, MRC, MAS, CNS). Multimodal neuromonitoring includes EEG, EPs, ENMG, cerebral oxymetry, saturation in the bulb of the jugular vein, TCD, and neuroimaging (MRI, PET). Dysfunction of autonomic brainstem structures is detected with variational cardiointervalometry, pupillometry, thermometry (peripheral and central), photoplethysmography assessment of perfusion index, quantitative assessment of muscle strength on the MRC scale and MAS, and diagnostics of the severity of the PSH syndrome. Monitoring data help clinicians to make decisions on SAE patient management tactics.

All sorts of bridges have been built by humans ever since they have decided to cross an obstacle on their way. Historically, various materials have been used as tension structural members carrying most, if not all, loads in all sorts of bridge-like structures for thousands of years, i.e. rope walkways in Chinese mountains. All sorts of hemp (and other natural fibers) ropes were utilized for smaller temporary structures, and in the sail ship industry, of course. Later, in mid centuries iron chains have been used to carry heavy loads of bridges and draw platforms.

In XIX century, one of the pioneers in light bridge structures was Eng. John Roebling, who introduced new materials and new technologies, which revolutionized the way bridges are constructed. Wire rope, cables and other high-tension structural members have evolved since those times, and new tensile materials have been invented to build bridges and other structures. Also, the advancement of engineering methods provides the scientific justification over the empirical believes for the advantage of tensile technology over traditional, gravity defying structural solutions. This paper will demonstrate new achievements in the development of tensile structural members and building methods.

Abstract:
In recent years, the most explosive technologies in electronic systems have demanded ever-higher functionality, ever-faster circuit speeds, and always increasing interconnection density. Electrolytic and electroless nickel/gold (Ni/Au) deposition process are used commonly to provide flat, solderable pad surface finish on area array (BGA or CSP) packages and printed wiring boards (PWB). The electroless nickel/immersion gold (ENIG) process is widely used which do not requires plating lines for electrolytic plating, better meets the fine pitch wiring requirements. However, ENIG deposition process may cause or contribute to catastrophic, brittle, interfacial solder joint fractures. ENIG plating has previously shown lower reliability at solder joints. This is because Phosphorous segregation at the interface Sn-Ni intermetallic and Ni layer caused poor adhesion at that interface, especially high phosphorous content (10∼15%) of the electroless Ni. There have been many studies verified that Ni3P formation is a major factor, which causes weaker joint strength and flat fracture surface. Owing to sodium hypophosphite (NaH2PO2) was used to provide electron and return Ni ion to deposit on Cu pad for ENIG plating, it is not dodge that phosphorous element exist at the Ni layer. Hence, ph value, temperature and loading factor (plating area/ plating tank volume) in the plating path are controlled to reduce phosphorous content (less than 10%) to avoid Ni3P formation. Furthermore, ENIG has a potential risk of black pad, because Porous Au plating layer caused the oxidation of Ni layer underneath the Au plating to occur solder joint failure and low shear forces after assembly. In order to overcome foregoing problem, a flip chip ball grid array (FCBGA) test vehicle is used to compare three kinds surface finish electroless Ni/Au, direct gold and solder on Cu pad in this study 63Sn/37Pb solder bump is reflowed onto these substrates. High temperature storage test (HTS) is used to evaluate thickness and structure of IMC to affect solder joint attachment reliability. Ball shear test is used to measurement joint strength at various HTS time. Optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron mcroscopy (SEM) are used to observe failure modes after ball shear.

Abstract:
Abstract To investigate the microstructural mechanisms of decreasing microvascular permeability induced by the enhancement of intraendothelial adenosine 3’,5’-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) levels, we extended the previous analytical model developed by Fu et al. (J. Biomech. Eng., 1994) for the interendothelial cleft to include multiple junction strands in the cleft and an interface between the surface glycocalyx layer and the cleft entrance. Based on the electron microscopic observation by Adamson et al. (Am. J. Physiol., 1998), that elevation of intracellular cAMP levels would increase number of tight junction strands, numerical method was applied to test the case in which there are two junction strands in the cleft and there are large discontinuous breaks and a small continuous slit in each strand. Results from this two-junction-strand and two-pore model can successfully account for the experimental data for the decreased permeability to water (Adamson et al. Am. J. Physiol., 1998), small and intermediate-sized solutes (Fu et al., Am. J. Physiol., 1998) by cAMP.
