Abstract:
In this thesis, we consider heterotic string vacua based on a warped product of a four-dimensional domain wall and a six-dimensional internal manifold preserving only two supercharges. Thus, they correspond to half-BPS states of heterotic supergravity. The constraints on the internal manifolds with $SU(3)$ structure are derived. They are found to be a generalization of half-flat manifolds with a particular pattern of torsion classes and they include half-flat manifolds and Strominger's complex non-Kahler manifolds as special cases. We also verify that heterotic compactifications on half-flat mirror manifolds are based on this class of solutions. Furthermore, within this context, we construct specific examples based on six-dimensional nearly-Kahler homogeneous manifolds and non-trivial vector bundles thereon. Our solutions are based on three specific group coset spaces satisfying the half-flat torsion class conditions. It is shown how to construct line bundles over these manifolds, compute their properties and build up vector bundles consistent with supersymmetry and the heterotic anomaly cancellation. It turns out that the most interesting solutions are obtained from SU(3)/U(1)². This space supports a large number of vector bundles leading to consistent heterotic vacua with GUT group and, for some of them, with three chiral families.

Wilson, Andrew Philip. "The strong containment lattice of Schunck classes of finite soluble groups." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1985. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/73526/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation into some of the lattice properties of the strong containment lattice (H, «) of Schunck classes and also of its important sublattice (D, «). The general aim is to characterise lattice properties of Schunck classes by avoidance class properties. Our main result, Theorem 8.5, is an avoidance class characterisation of those D-classes all of whose maximal ascending proper chains of Q-classes to S have the, same length. The problem extended to H is much more difficult but in Corollary 4.3 we describe an avoidance class condition for a Schunck class only to have chains of finite length to S. The lack of duality in H shows up clearly in section 3. The fascinating problem of deciding whether or not H is atomic is considered in section 9. Our results suggest that it probably is since any counterexample must be very complicated.

Abstract:
El Sistema USA has grown to become an organization with over 100 programs across the nation. The organization has become known for offering free music instruction to the poorest neighborhoods and school districts in the country. The vast majority of these programs offer string programs that focus on ensemble- based learning. What is lacking is a uniquely El Sistema method of instruction for strings. This doctoral essay will discuss the current state of violin pedagogy for beginning violin group classes in El Sistema USA programs, examine areas where there is a lack of unity in teaching styles using information collected from a national survey, and propose a first-year teaching prospectus that incorporates the organization’s core values to be used for reference by instructors.

"The Othona Community : 'a strange phenomenon'." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7745/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to explore the “strange phenomenon” of the Intentional Christian Community Othona in Bradwell-on-Sea, Essex, Great Britain, founded in 1946 by Norman Motley, to cherish differences and diversity through reconciliation among nations that had been at war with each other. An old neglected chapel, St Peter-on-the-Wall, became the spiritual centre of this Community. A phenomenographic, auto-ethnographic and multi-dimensional research approach, designed to investigate and describe the Othona Community and its praxis and the researcher's involvement in it, is used for the empirical part of the thesis. The study seeks to discover a) the Lebenswelten ― or the world created by its life ― of the Othona Community, b) members'/participants' perception of the Community through interviews and Community literature, c) a way of understanding this “strange phenomenon” and its special charism with the help of an “endogenous theology”. This thesis shows that a two-fold encounter lies at the heart of the experience at Othona: encounter between a person and the “Other” (represented by the Stoep) and between a person and the “Wholly Other” (represented by the Chapel). Through examination of these encounters light is shed on the extraordinariness of Othona. The German term Heimat (a deeply spiritual home) is introduced here to encapsulate these “encounteral” experiences which induce a transformation of place and people alike. Theologically, the thesis claims that a combination of a Theology of Encounter and an understanding of Heimat can assist the appreciation of the Othona phenomenon as a Community of temporary withdrawal and restoration, where differences and a Kingdom model are experienced in narrative encounters on the margins by offering Heimat through belonging and significance.

Abstract:
The main object of this thesis is to obtain numerous applications of fractional derivative operator concerning analytic and -valent (or multivalent) functions in the open unit disk by introducing new classes and deriving new properties. Our finding will provide interesting new results and indicate extensions of a number of known results. In this thesis we investigate a wide class of problems. First, by making use of certain fractional derivative operator, we define various new classes of -valent functions with negative coefficients in the open unit disk such as classes of -valent starlike functions involving results of (Owa, 1985a), classes of -valent starlike and convex functions involving the Hadamard product (or convolution) and classes of -uniformly -valent starlike and convex functions, in obtaining, coefficient estimates, distortion properties, extreme points, closure theorems, modified Hadmard products and inclusion properties. Also, we obtain radii of convexity, starlikeness and close-to-convexity for functions belonging to those classes. Moreover, we derive several new sufficient conditions for starlikeness and convexity of the fractional derivative operator by using certain results of (Owa, 1985a), convolution, Jack¿s lemma and Nunokakawa¿ Lemma. In addition, we obtain coefficient bounds for the functional of functions belonging to certain classes of -valent functions of complex order which generalized the concepts of starlike, Bazilevi¿ and non-Bazilevi¿ functions. We use the method of differential subordination and superordination for analytic functions in the open unit disk in order to derive various new subordination, superordination and sandwich results involving the fractional derivative operator. Finally, we obtain some new strong differential subordination, superordination, sandwich results for -valent functions associated with the fractional derivative operator by investigating appropriate classes of admissible functions. First order linear strong differential subordination properties are studied. Further results including strong differential subordination and superordination based on the fact that the coefficients of the functions associated with the fractional derivative operator are not constants but complex-valued functions are also studied.

Abstract:
The results given in this thesis deal with the design of high gain observers forsome classes on nonlinear systems. A class of multi-inputs/multi-output non uniformlyobservable systems has been first considered and an observer the gain of which is issuedfrom the resolution of a Lyapunov ordinary differential equation has been proposed. Theexponential convergence of the underlying observation error has been established underan appropriate persistent excitation condition. The design of the proposed observerhas then been reconsidered in order to account for the sampling and delay processeswhich may occur on the output. The redesigned observer assumes a cascade structurewith chained systems where the head of the cascade is an observer for the delayedstate while the state of the last system in the cascade constitutes an estimation ofthe system actual state. The second class of systems considered in this thesis is amulti-outputs observable normal form involving some uncertainties and with a delayedsampled output. A cascade observer allowing the estimation of the system actual statehas been proposed. The performance and main properties of the proposed observershave been illustrated in simulation by considering many examples throughout thisthesis

Abstract:

Dotson, Emily A. "Strong Angels of Comfort: Middle Class Managing Daughters in Victorian Literature." UKnowledge, 2014. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/english_etds/13.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation joins a vibrant conversation in the social sciences about the challenging nature of care labor as well as feminist discussions about the role of the daughter in Victorian culture. It explores the literary presence of the middle class managing daughter in the Victorian home. Collectively, the novels in this study articulate social anxieties about the unclear and unstable role of daughters in the family, the physically and emotionally challenging work they, and all women, do, and the struggle for daughters to find a place in a family hierarchy, which is often structured not by effort or affection, but by proscribed traditional roles, which do not easily adapt to managing daughters, even if they are the ones holding the family together. The managing daughter is a problem not accounted for in any conventional domestic structure or ideology so there is no role, no clear set of responsibilities and no boundaries that could, and arguably should, define her obligations, offer her opportunities for empowerment, or set necessary limits on the broad cultural mandate she has to comfort and care others. The extremes she is often pushed to reveals the stresses and hidden conflicts for authority and autonomy inherent in domestic labor without the iconic angel in the house rhetoric that so often masks the difficulties of domestic life for women. She gains no authority or stability no matter how loving or even how necessary she is to a family because there simply is no position in the parental family structure for her. The managing daughter thus reveals a deep crack in the structure of the traditional Victorian family by showing that it often cannot accommodate, protect, or validate a loving non-traditional family member because it values traditional hierarchies over emotion or effort. Yet, in doing so, it also suggests that if it is position not passion that matters, then as long as a woman assumes the right position in the family then deep emotional connections to others are not necessary for her to care competently for others.

Wang, Jinglong. "Insights into the mechanism of DNA double-strand breaks and classic NHEJ by single-molecule magnetic tweezers." Thesis, Université de Paris (2019-....), 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019UNIP7063.

Full text
Abstract:
Repairing DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) by non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ) requires multiple proteins to recognize and bind DNA ends, process them for compatibility, and ligate them together. We constructed novel DNA substrates for single-molecule nano-manipulation allowing us to mechanically detect, probe, and rupture in real-time DSB synapsis by specific human NHEJ components. DNA-PKcs and Ku allow DNA end synapsis on the sub second timescale, and addition of PAXX extends this lifetime to ~2s. Further addition of XRCC4, XLF and Ligase IV resulted in minute-scale synapsis and led to robust repair of both strands of the nanomanipulated DNA. In contrast with PAXX, a long non-coding RNA LINP1 can also help DNA-PK to tether DNA ends together, which could be more required when DNA ends falling apart in distance. Moreover, we also interrogate the bacteria Bacillus subtilis NHEJ system, which just composed Ku and Ligase D, bacteria Ku also can tether DNA together and introducing the Ligase D strengthen the synapsis and lead to ligation. The energetic contribution of the different components to synaptic stability is typically small, on the scale of a few kCal/mol. Our combined results define assembly rules for NHEJ machinery and unveil the importance of weak interactions, rapidly ruptured even at sub-picoNewton forces, in regulating this multicomponent chemomechanical system for genome integrity. Moreover, we also identify a novel the DNA double strand cleavage pattern regulated by Cas9 PAM. In sum, this PhD work investigates the DSB generation and the detailed process from DNA end tethering to ligation

Abstract:
The desire to change life, to be accomplished and emancipated in the 1830s was found through artistic expression. This continues today in other forms. The proletariat of the nineteenth century decided to no longer live the unbearable. They took hours on their free time, to educate and cultivate themselves. They founded newspapers, composed songs, poems, pamphlets, read the texts of thinkers like Saint-Simonian and Fourierists. Their struggle followed the routes of the aesthetic regime. This experience of emancipation is the link, through time, with other multiple attempts that continue to transform society, with highlights in 1936, 1968, 1995. During the social movements in 1995, the strikers chose cinematic expression to recount their struggle. A flood of images followed the strikers throughout demonstrations and General meetings. These films led to creating a different vision of strikes and to building a working memory by the workers themselves. They are a counterpoint to the images and comments offered by most of the media. They are also aesthetic experiences. This very use of the camera by workers is not new. It is part of the history of militant cinema that creates a social representation of the working world. It is necessary to understand these different periods of emancipation, to build and to analyze the figures in this history of the emergence of aesthetics in the field of working history. We must also question the political and anthropological significance of these breaking points where the desire for emancipation and fulfillment is part of an aesthetic dimension When the working class is being overhauled its identity, when the disappearance of its values is evoked, it is essential to show its fight and struggles that continue to stake its history

Abstract:
This research provides a new assessment of Mertonâs classic strain/anomie theory and addresses some of its empirical and theoretical problems. First of all, it compares alternative operationalizations of classic strain and reports the results of a test of the theoryâs generality using the survey data from Ukrainian adolescents. Second, the research evaluates the chances of improving classic strain theory by elaborating and possibly integrating it with other explanations of crime and delinquency, particularly those featuring such constraints on behavior as perceptions of punishment, social bonds, self-control, and morality. The findings from this study confirm that additional clarifications of the concept of classic strain may be promising. They also demonstrate the applicability of Mertonâs account to the Ukrainian context and indicate the importance of socio-cultural macro-level influences. Furthermore, the results concerning the possibility of theoretical elaboration of the classic strain/anomie theory provide limited support for mediating or moderating effects of the constraint variables on the strain-crime relationship. However, they show that some measures of classic strain as well as all crime-inhibiting factors exert significant independent effects on involvement in juvenile delinquency. Therefore, empirical evidence seems to suggest that more drastic transformations of Mertonâs theory may be required in order to turn it into a more satisfying account of misbehavior. In particular, it indicates the necessity of theoretical integration of the classic strain/anomie explanation of crime with those featuring constraints on behavior.

Biswas, Subal C. "Efficiency and effectiveness of deep structure based subject indexing languages : PRECIS vs. DSIS." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1988. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7280.

Full text
Abstract:
A 'Subject Indexing Language' (SIL) is an artificial language used for formulating names of subjects. Although classificationists have sought for universals in many fields of study such as, philosophy, biology, general systems theory, etc., the search for a deep structure of SILs formally began with Ranganathan's idea of 'absolute syntax' and was brought to the present by G. Bhattacharyya and D. Austin. Whereas Bhattacharyya's deep structure of SIL is primarily based on classificatory principles (parallel to 'absolute syntax'), the deep structure proposed by Austin has a linguistic connotation. The present study describes and compares two such deep structurebased SILs, viz., PRECIS (PREserved Context Index System) and DSIS (Deep Structure Indexing System), a recent computerized version of POPSI (POstulate-based Permuted Subject Indexing), developed by F. J. Devadason at Documentation Research and Training Centre, Bangalore, India. Both also belong to the category of SILs typified as 'string indexing' languages. The study involves: i) writing of a suitable DSIS index entry generation program, ii) using both PRECIS (in-house) and DSIS programs to index a collection of representative sample documents from the soft sciences, iii) analyzing and comparing their respective syntactic and semantic aspects in terms of both linguistic and classificatory principles, and iv) applying some measures of efficiency and effectiveness. It was realized that certain modifications in the existing DSIS string manipulation algorithms are necessary to make the program fully operational. Although, no attempts have been made to quantify the measures of effectiveness and efficiency as such, suggestions have been provided as to what these probably would be. Some indications of their searching difficulties for a prospective searcher have been put forward as well.

Zhang, Tingting. "Elucidating Mechanisms of IgH Class Switch Recombination Involving Switch Regions and Double Strand Break Joining." Thesis, Harvard University, 2011. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10047.

Full text
Abstract:
During IgH class switch recombination (CSR) in mature B lymphocytes, activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) initiates DNA double strand breaks (DSBs) within switch (S) regions flanking different sets of the IgH locus (IgH) constant \((C_H)\) region exons. End-Joining of DSBs in the upstream donor S region (Sm) to DSBs in a downstream acceptor S region \((S_{acc})\) replaces the initial set of \(C_H\) exons, Cm, with a set of downstream \(C_H\) exons, leading to Ig class switching from IgM to another IgH class (e.g., IgG, IgE, or IgA). In addition to joining to DSBs within another S region, AID-induced DSBs within a given S region are often rejoined or joined to other DSBs in the same S region to form internal switch deletions (ISDs). ISDs were frequently observed in Sm but rarely in \(S_{acc}s\), suggesting that AID targeting to \(S_{acc}s\) requires prior recruitment to Sm. To test this hypothesis, we assessed CSR and ISDs in B cells lacking Sm and found that AID frequently targets downstream \(S_{acc}s\) independently of Sm. These studies also led us to propose an alternative pathway of "downstream" IgE class switching that involves joining of DSBs within the downstream \(S\gamma1\) and \(S\epsilon\) regions as a first step before joining of \(S\mu\) to the hybrid downstream S region. To further elucidate the CSR mechanism, we addressed the long-standing question of whether S region DSBs during CSR involves a direction-specific mechanism similar to joining of RAG1/2 endonuclease-generated DSBs during V(D)J recombination. We used an unbiased high throughput method to isolate junctions between I-SceI meganuclease-generated DSBs at a target site that replaces the IgH \(S\gamma1\) region and other genomic DSBs of endogenous origin. Remarkably, we found that the I-SceI-generated DSBs were joined to both upstream DSBs in \(S\mu\) and downstream DSBs in \(S\epsilon\) predominantly in orientations associated with joining during productive CSR. This process required the DSB response factor 53BP1 to maintain the orientation-dependence, but not the overall levels, of joining between these widely separated IgH breaks. We propose that CSR exploits a mechanism involving 53BP1 to enhance directional joining of DSBs within IgH in an orientation that leads to productive CSR.

Full text
Abstract:
Jorge Luis Borges's story "El Zahir" describes a moment where the protagonist finds rest from his monomania by reworking one of the central texts in Old Germanic myth, the story of Sigurd and Brynhild. The approach taken here by the protagonist is the paradigm used in this thesis for understanding Borges's own strong readings of Old Germanic literature, specifically Old Scandinavian texts. In chapter one, a brief outline of the myth of Sigurd and Brynhild, with a particular emphasis on Gram, the sword that lied between them, is provided and juxtaposed with Borges's own family history, focusing on the family's storied military past. This image of the sword as the symbol for the north and its relation to Borges's family and political interests is sustained throughout the thesis. Chapter two is a survey of the various facets of Borges's literary output that were influenced by Nordic myth and literary styles: first, literary criticism, second, poetry and prose, and third, translation. The survey shows that Borges's engagement with the north began early and was maintained throughout his life. Likewise, after working through seven works from disparate periods it becomes clear that Borges is not merely introducing the Spanish speaking world to Old Scandinavian texts, but, in the same fashion as the protagonist in "El Zahir," subsuming them in a way that is uniquely Borgesian. The third chapter follows the same approach as the survey but focuses on Borges's short stories, specifically two short stories from his collection entitled Libro de Arena: "Ulrica" and "Undr." Many of the conclusions that emerged in the survey are further validated in the analysis of these two stories, but with greater emphasis on how they relate to Borges's later years, and the themes that begin to surround his preparation for death. The concluding chapter summarizes the findings of the previous three chapters by way of a close reading of Borges's tombstone. Each aspect of the stone is connected to Old Germanic myth and how that symbolized the eventual consummation of his joy: the sword that kept him separated from love was eventually lifted, as it was for Ulrica and Javier in "Ulrica."

Abstract:
This thesis discusses the working class formation, particularly the class consciousness formation of the working class during the Democrat Party period. Class consciousness formation is evaluated as a dimension of class formation process. Getting organized, trade unionization and collective action, especially calling a strike are among the significant aspects of class consciousness formation. During the DP period, right to strike is the most controversial and noteworthy issue. It is the basic debate in the trade union newspapers. This is the reason of discussing class consciousness with reference to right to strike as handled by the trade union newspapers. According to this study, class consciousness should be perceived as a phenomenon composed of different levels. In addition, class struggle can take place in different ways and class consciousness can have different forms. Although, it is hard to say that there is a class consciousness in the Leninist sense of the term, it is possible to talk about an economic-corporate consciousness with Gramsci&rsquo
s words. Trade unionization during the DP period and trade union publications are important experience of the workers in class consciousness formation process. Working classes do not generally taken into consideration in the studies of the DP period and also in the researches on Turkish labor history. The study also asserts that, experiences of trade unions or the workers in general during the DP period are worth to analyze for the Turkish labor history.

Raney, Catherine A. "From Housewife to Household Weapon: Women from the Bolivian Mines Organize Against Economic Exploitation and Political Oppression." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2013. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/591.

Full text
Abstract:
Drawing from oral histories which I gathered while living in Bolivia, this thesis tracks the start, growth, and development of the political movement led by women from the Bolivian mines from 1961 to 1987. This movement helped create a new political culture that recognized the importance of women’s participation in politics and human rights. Today, this culture lives on. Bolivia has not experienced a coup since 1980, and the nation’s human rights record has improved dramatically since the 1980s as well. Prior to the mid-1980s, Bolivia was often under the control of oppressive military regimes that resorted to many different types of coercion in attempts to silence resistance in the mining centers, the national government’s main source of conflict. This uneven power struggle between working class activists and the national government motivated many women to challenge gender roles and involve themselves in politics. After establishing their political organization called the Housewives’ Committee, women activists organized and acted collectively to challenge political oppression and mitigate the effects of extreme poverty. They frequently employed compelling tactics, most commonly hunger strikes, to win attention for their issues. They also involved themselves in many other diverse projects and demonstrations depending on their communities’ need. Women’s political development resulted in a number of personal transformations among those who participated: it awakened a political consciousness and also enabled women to recognize the importance of their paid and unpaid work in the mining economy. These changes eventually altered women’s understanding of how women’s oppression fit into the broader struggle of working class activism by convincing them of the deep connection between women’s liberation and the liberation of their community. These transformations led to the acceptance of women as political activists and leaders, which continues in the present. This work also tracks the United States’ impact on the relationship between the mining centers and the state. This analysis serves to remind us that as United States citizens we must be very critical of our nation’s impact; because of our ability to enormously affect small land-locked countries like Bolivia, we must also hold ourselves accountable to understanding our historical impact so that we can make informed decisions in the present.

Abstract:
This study evaluated the effect of different degrees of plastic deformation or heat treatment on the transformation of austenite into martensite of an HSLA steel plate API 5L X80 for pipelines. A 19 mm thickness plate would be submitted to UOE forming process, but the cold work instead occurred by cold rolling at room temperature, with reductions of 5 up to 20%. The purpose was to better understand the MA constituent, explore the strain-induced martensitic transformation (SIMT) and austenitic decomposition by heat treatment with emphasis on its magnetic behavior. The transformation was accompanied by saturation magnetization measurements, compared with the mass density and X-ray diffraction. The plastic deformation or the heat treatment altered the saturation magnetization and the mass density in a manner consistent with the elimination of metastable retained austenite. The density method is sensible to measure phase transformations induced by strain. The data obtained shows a volumetric expansion of about 0.13%, corresponding to an amount of retained austenite of the original material of 3.2%, while the values obtained by magnetization saturation are 2.8% by hysteresigraph and 2.1% by VSM. By X-ray diffraction there is a clear drop in first peaks of austenite of the samples under deformation or heat treatment compared with the sample as-received.

Abstract:
Objective: We consider the following problem from credit risk modeling: Our sample (Xi; Yi), 1 < i < n, consists of pairs of variables. The first variable Xi measures the creditworthiness of individual i. The second variable Yi is the default indicator of individual i. It has two states: Yi = 1 indicates a default, Yi = 0 a non-default. A default occurs, if individual i cannot meet its contractual credit obligations, i. e. it cannot pay back its outstandings regularly. In afirst step, our objective is to estimate the threshold between good and bad creditworthiness in the sense of dividing the range of Xi into two rating classes: One class with good creditworthiness and a low probability of default and another class with bad creditworthiness and a high probability of default. Methods: Given observations of individual creditworthiness Xi and defaults Yi, the field of change point analysis provides a natural way to estimate the breakpoint between the rating classes. In order to account for dependency between the observations, the literature proposes a combination of three model classes: These are a breakpoint model, a linear one-factor model for the creditworthiness Xi, and a Bernoulli mixture model for the defaults Yi. We generalize the dependency structure further and use a generalized link between systematic factor and idiosyncratic factor of creditworthiness. So the systematic factor cannot only change the location, but also the form of the distribution of creditworthiness. Results: For the case of two rating classes, we propose several estimators for the breakpoint and for the default probabilities within the rating classes. We prove the strong consistency of these estimators in the given non-i.i.d. framework. The theoretical results are illustrated by a simulation study. Finally, we give an overview of research opportunities.

Abstract:
From the begiining of the 20th century producer co-operative bacon factories were established in the south of Sweden. In his thesis Lars Hansson studies how class relations were shaped and transformed within this rural industry. The producer co-operative slaughter associations consisted of a large number of members from smallholders to large scale agrarian producers. The power of the associations was concentrated in the hands of the big producers, but the manangers also had a considerable power, due to their expert knowledge of the buisness and the bacon markets in U.K. The workers of the producer co-operative slaughter houses were mostly unskilled workers, with little or no knowledge of butchering. From the 1910’s the workers unionized but their organisation was not accepted by the employers and harsh labour disputes took place during the 1920’s. From the 1930’s the farmers producer co-operative movement grew all over Sweden and they formed a political alliance with the Social democratic Party. The Swedish labour market became more peaceful as the employers and the unions began to co-operate to a greater extent. The Food Workers Union was more and more integrated in the Swedish society and thereby lost its earlier antisystemic character and were more and more transformed into a systemic movement. The slaughter house workers union had a distinct patriarchal characters from its start and its attitude towards women workers was ambivalent. During WWII, however, the attitude changed and more women were active in class practice in order to improve their situation.

Abstract:
This thesis is a monograph on The Play about the Norberg Strike 1891–92, a pioneering project and performance relating to working-class cultural expressions. The project was initiated in the summer of 1975, and the first successful performances were held in June and July 1977. The democracy of cultural life was very positively manifested in The Play and in Swedish media, it was described as the first working-class play. It served as a model for other similar productions, set in many places in Sweden. The investigation began with field studies, which facilitated the choice of a suitable theory. A starting-point was that a specific working-class culture exists, subordinated to the dominant middle class culture. Social class distinction is an underlying concept for hegemony, and also for the spanning theoretical framework used in my investigation. It comprises a public sphere theory, formulated by Oskar Negt and Alexander Kluge in their book Öffentlichkeit und Erfahrung (1972). Their concept counter-public sphere is applied to The Play. The main purpose was to describe the characteristic features of The Play, by delineating and analysing the production phase, particularly the aesthetically elaborated parts, i.e. the script production, the staging, the performance, and the reception, all consistent with the working-class culture and the local conditions in Norberg. A more subordinated purpose was to complete the common definition of the term working-class play. The Play about the Norberg Strike succeeded in putting the negative influences of the bourgeois public sphere aside, replacing it with positive categories. The work processes were of vital importance, as was the forming of new platforms and communication channels based on the local working-class experiences and lives. Consequently, The Play became a genuine expression and a solid breakthrough for working-class experiences.

Abstract:
We consider various generalisations of the string class of a loop group bundle. The string class is the obstruction to lifting a bundle whose structure group is the loop group LG to one whose structure group is the Kac-Moody central extension of the loop group. We develop a notion of higher string classes for bundles whose structure group is the group of based loops, ΩG. In particular, we give a formula for characteristic classes in odd dimensions for such bundles which are associated to characteristic classes for G-bundles in the same way that the string class is related to the first Pontrjagyn class of a certain G-bundle associated to the loop group bundle in question. This provides us with a theory of characteristic classes for ΩG-bundles analogous to Chern-Weil theory in finite dimensions. This also gives us a geometric interpretation of the well-known transgression map H[superscript]2k (BG) → H[superscript]2k−1 (G). We also consider the obstruction to lifting a bundle whose structure group is not the loop group but the semi-direct product of the loop group with the circle, LG ⋊ S¹. We review the theory of bundle gerbes and their application to central extensions and lifting problems and use these methods to obtain an explicit expression for the de Rham representative of the obstruction to lifting such a bundle. We also relate this to a generalisation of the so-called ‘caloron correspondence’ (which relates LG-bundles over M to G-bundles over M × S¹) to a correspondence which relates LG ⋊ S¹-bundles over M to G-bundles over S¹-bundles over M.

Abstract:
The caloron correspondence (introduced in [32] and generalised in [25, 33, 41]) is a tool that gives an equivalence between principal G-bundles based over the manifold M x S¹ and principal LG-bundles on M, where LG is the Frechet Lie group of smooth loops in the Lie group G. This thesis uses the caloron correspondence to construct certain differential forms called string potentials that play the same role as Chern-Simons forms for loop group bundles. Following their construction, the string potentials are used to define degree 1 differential characteristic classes for ΩU(n)-bundles. The notion of an Ω vector bundle is introduced and a caloron correspondence is developed for these objects. Finally, string potentials and Ω vector bundles are used to define an Ω bundle version of the structured vector bundles of [38]. The Ω model of odd differential K-theory is constructed using these objects and an elementary differential extension of odd K-theory appearing in [40].

Abstract:
This thesis explores the issues around the process of brand building, brand positioning, and brand management in emerging countries. Despite these topics being largely debated, some important multinationals still have been showing an inconsistency in its emerging markets strategies. The purpose of this thesis is to give a real and practical example of a brand which was built from scratch adopting its marketing strategy to Angola and to Angolans' needs and which faced some problems related to consumers' brand knowledge. Quantitative and qualitative studies were run in order to understand the main habits and attitudes of the Angolan middle-class segment when buying Furniture and Decoration products, as well as their relationship to the home, the different rooms in the home, and decoration. The empirical findings indicate that the branding policies and marketing strategies in emerging countries are highly influenced by the following factors: Complexity on segmentation, differences on communication channels, on consumers’ needs and desires, on frames of reference being significant the traditional commerce, a lack of trust in brands promises and fear regarding modern distribution. In conclusion, based on the research done, I came up some executable rules and policies for brand management and brand building on Furniture and decoration retail industry in emerging markets.

Abstract:
The Strong Black Woman Schema (SBWS) refers to the collective believes, behaviors, resources and responses Black women are socialized to embody. The SBWS was developed as a positive counterimage to the negative stereotypes of Black women, such as the mammy or the jezebel, and is an important image among Black women. Observations suggest that the SBWS may affect how Black women experience and interpret stress and mental illness. I assert the SBWS may serve as one comprehensive explanation for the mental health outcomes observed for Black women. Qualitative and quantitative studies have identified a set of characteristics (i.e. strength, emotion regulation, caretaking) related to the schema. However, scales developed to measure the schema lack the ability to isolate adequately a unique typology for Black women. I argue that the SBWS is representative of a specific compilation of psychosocial resources (i.e. mastery, self-efficacy, resilience, self-esteem) representative of the cultural response to historical experiences of racism and sexism. I explore how the SBWS influences the reporting of depressive symptoms, depression and anxiety through a secondary data analysis of African American, Caribbean Black and White American women using data from the National Survey of American Life. Through a three part analysis, I answer the following questions: 1) Is a compilation of psychosocial measures an appropriate measure of the Strong Black Woman Schema? 2) What sociodemographic factors influence distinct typologies reflective of at least one uniquely Black form of the Strong Black Woman Schema? And 3) Does the Strong Black Woman Schema influence depressive symptons, depression, and anxiety? Results of this study clarify how socio-cultural aspects of oppression influence the mental health of Black women.

Abstract:

This study examines whether trajectories of multiple social role occupancy, measured by level and dynamics of spouse, parent, and worker roles, are associated with mortality and concurrent trajectories of depressive symptoms and self-rated health. I frame hypotheses with role strain, role enhancement, role context, stress process, and life course theories to examine both within-person changes over age and between-person predictors of health status.

I use data from the Americans' Changing Lives Study, a nationally representative accelerated cohort panel study of U.S. adults interviewed in 1986, 1989, 1994, and 2001/2 with mortality tracking through 2006. I use latent class analysis to estimate disaggregated trajectories of role occupancy, role strain, role satisfaction, depressive symptoms, and self-rated health across the adult life course. I then use multinomial and logistic regression analyses to examine associations between role trajectories and health outcomes.

I find that (1) there is significant heterogeneity in trajectories of role occupancy and characteristics across the adult life course; (2) higher levels of social role occupancy are associated with better depressive symptom and mortality outcomes; (3) lower levels of role strain and higher levels of role satisfaction are associated with better depressive symptom outcomes, and (4); the association between role occupancy and health is robust to the inclusion of role characteristics. Thus, I find support for the role enhancement hypothesis in that higher levels of role occupancy are associated with better health outcomes irrespective of reward and strain associated with those roles.

Cho, Jaehyun. "Automorphic L-functions and their applications to Number Theory." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/32684.

Abstract:
The main part of the thesis is applications of the Strong Artin conjecture to number theory. We have two applications. One is generating number fields with extreme class numbers. The other is generating extreme positive and negative values of Euler-Kronecker constants. For a given number field $K$ of degree $n$, let $\widehat{K}$ be the normal closure of $K$ with $Gal(\widehat{K}/\Bbb Q)=G.$ Let $Gal(\widehat{K}/K)=H$ for some subgroup $H$ of $G$. Then, $$ L(s,\rho,\widehat{K}/\Bbb Q)=\frac{\zeta_K(s)}{\zeta(s)} $$ where $Ind_H^G1_H = 1_G + \rho$. When $L(s,\rho)$ is an entire function and has a zero-free region $[\alpha,1] \times [-(\log N)^2, (\log N)^2]$ where $N$ is the conductor of $L(s,\rho)$, we can estimate $\log L(1,\rho)$ and $\frac{L'}{L}(1,\rho)$ as a sum over small primes: $$ \log L(1,\rho) = \sum_{p\leq(\log N)^{k}}\lambda(p)p^{-1} + O_{l,k,\alpha}(1)$$ $$ \frac{L'}{L}(1,\rho)=-\sum_{p\leq x} \frac{\lambda(p) \log{p}}{p} +O_{l,x,\alpha}(1). $$ where $0 < k < \frac{16}{1-\alpha}$ and $(\log N)^{\frac{16}{1-\alpha}} \leq x \leq N^{\frac{1}{4}}$. With these approximations, we can study extreme values of class numbers and Euler-Kronecker constants. Let $\frak{K}$ $(n,G,r_1,r_2)$ be the set of number fields of degree $n$ with signature $(r_1,r_2)$ whose normal closures are Galois $G$ extension over $\Bbb Q$. Let $f(x,t) \in \Bbb Z[t][x]$ be a parametric polynomial whose splitting field over $\Bbb Q (t)$ is a regular $G$ extension. By Cohen's theorem, most specialization $t\in \Bbb Z$ corresponds to a number field $K_t$ in $\frak{K}$ $(n,G,r_1,r_2)$ with signature $(r_1,r_2)$ and hence we have a family of Artin L-functions $L(s,\rho,t)$. By counting zeros of L-functions over this family, we can obtain L-functions with the zero-free region above. In Chapter 1, we collect the known cases for the Strong Artin conjecture and prove it for the cases of $G=A_4$ and $S_4$. We explain how to obtain the approximations of $\log (1,\rho)$ and $\frac{L'}{L}(1,\rho)$ as a sum over small primes in detail. We review the theorem of Kowalski-Michel on counting zeros of automorphic L-functions in a family. In Chapter 2, we exhibit many parametric polynomials giving rise to regular extensions. They contain the cases when $G=C_n,$ $3\leq n \leq 6$, $D_n$, $3\leq n \leq 5$, $A_4, A_5, S_4, S_5$ and $S_n$, $n \geq 2$. In Chapter 3, we construct number fields with extreme class numbers using the parametric polynomials in Chapter 2. In Chapter 4, We construct number fields with extreme Euler-Kronecker constants also using the parametric polynomials in Chapter 2. In Chapter 5, we state the refinement of Weil's theorem on rational points of algebraic curves and prove it. The second topic in the thesis is about simple zeros of Maass L-functions. We consider a Hecke Maass form $f$ for $SL(2,\Bbb Z)$. In Chapter 6, we show that if the L-function $L(s,f)$ has a non-trivial simple zero, it has infinitely many simple zeros. This result is an extension of the result of Conrey and Ghosh.
