Abstract:
This chapter locates Emerson’s late-phase interest in aggregated, communal forms of intellection within similar fixations that permeated a broader cultural ambience during the 1850s and 1860s. This milieu included the oceanographer Matthew Fontaine Maury, whose crowdsourced researches captured public imagination as a model of communal thought; Herman Melville, whose mention of Maury in Moby-Dick (1856) portends his own vision of a proliferating and ever-closer association upon the waves; Walt Whitman, whose similar interests in communality inform the oceanic and liquid setting of “Sun-Down Poem” from the second edition of Leaves of Grass (1856); and indeed Emerson, whose 1862 “Perpetual Forces” foreran the even more fluid social subjectivity of Natural History of Intellect (1870–71). Finally, the chapter argues that Emerson’s ideas in these last two works provided a template for the radical pluralism of William James’s Principles of Psychology (1890) and “How Can Two Minds Know One Thing?” (1905).

Abstract:
This chapter takes a single song, Dibdin’s ‘A Voyage to Margate’, and examines its social resonances. It begins with an account of what the song can tell us about the way the seaside resort of Margate figured in the popular imagination, and then moves into a study of the mutually reinforcing domains of song and visual culture, from slip songs and street ballads, through graphic satire and finely produced drolls, to aspirational mezzotint engravings based on oil paintings by George Morland. The author describes a feedback loop between song culture and visual iconography in which songs borrowed tropes from graphic satires, which were then illustrated across a range of print media, and were later reabsorbed into song culture in further parodies and adaptations.

Abstract:
Street cries had long defined the ambiance of Paris in the nineteenth century. From the Middle Ages through to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, street cries were used by hawkers to publicize announcements or news and to sell merchandise of all kinds. Each trade had a distinctive cry, a combination of words and a characteristic tune, such that buyers could identify each peddler by a sound marker. The peddling sounds of the streets constituted shared memories that evoked childhood and fostered a sense of place for Parisians. A nostalgic longing for better days combined with the antiquarian's interest in Old Paris also motivated efforts to document and preserve traces of sounds perceived as having survived through the ages, but now at risk of disappearing. This chapter traces street criers' functions as noisemakers, place-makers, and “sound souvenirs,” in the musical, graphic, and textual traditions of the Cris de Paris.
