Abstract:
The article examines scientific developments in the field of strategic management. Conscious strategic management allows the management of the enterprise to respond constructively to changes in its economic activity, to identify new opportunities and negative trends; evaluate alternative prospects for development in the future. The classification of scientific schools of strategy formation, which are based on different ideas about the determinants of strategic management, is presented. Each enterprise has its own configuration of initial strategic processes. Scientists have developed a wide range of enterprise management strategies. Enterprise management strategies are characterized by a constant focus on development, the desire to predict the future, and the direction to increase the efficiency of the enterprise. The article justifies the necessity of using a system of strategies. Theoretical approaches to development methodology, formation of a system of strategies for achieving enterprise goals are considered. It has been established that the economic strategy plays the most important role in combining individual elements of the general strategy of the enterprise. It is the main prerequisite for maintaining a high level of efficiency of the enterprise and its competitiveness. The process of forming an economic strategy includes interrelated stages: assessment of the current financial state of the enterprise and existing economic strategy; formation of a set of possible economic strategies; direct selection of an economic strategy using a comparative analysis based on certain principles and criteria. When forming an economic strategy, it is necessary to take into account the organizational and production features of the enterprise, in particular, the industry, goals, potential and resource opportunities, etc. The strategy must be adjusted taking into account the influence of external and internal environmental factors.

Abstract:
The article examines the evolution of strategic management, which consists of five stages: budgeting and control, long-term planning, strategic planning, strategic management (strategic management), strategic management based on flexibility. The first stage – budgeting and control – involves the development of annual budgets, followed by the analysis of deviations, their causes, and, if necessary, makes decisions about adjustments, the second stage – long-term planning – it is assumed that the trends that were in the past will continue in the future, that is, on based on retrospective data and past experience, the third stage – strategic planning focused on the market environment, the fourth stage – strategic management (strategic management) – takes into account the dynamism of the external environment, therefore cyclical planning is not applied. The first four stages are proposed by David Aaker with the author’s addition, and the fifth is rejected by us as a modern approach to strategic planning, since strategic management on the basis of flexibility is a need of the modern stage of enterprise functioning, and is based on the use of agile methods, as well as technologies and tools capable of processing a large array of information and learning. The article examines the essence of the concept of “strategy”. The study of various approaches and existing opinions made it possible to form the author’s view on the category “strategy”, that is, the strategy should be understood as a long-term direction of activity formed on the basis of an objective assessment of the external and internal environment, the resources of the organization, and oriented towards meeting the requirements of interested parties, development and continuous improvement of activities. Strategic management of the development of the organization is based on the choice of strategy depending on the goals and directions of development, so the article provides a hierarchy of the company’s strategies. Types of corporate, competitive and functional strategies are given.

Abstract:
The analysis of strategic potential for development strategy aimed at the effective use of synthesized capital is fundamental to solving the urgent problems of increasing the well-being of the population and promoting economic growth. Given the analysis of existing approaches on the principles of consistency and complicity, a system of indicators was developed to assess the components of the region’s strategic potential: investment capital, innovation capital, infrastructural capital, entrepreneurial capital, ecological capital has been developed. The author proposed groups of indicators of human capital, intellectual capital and social capital of the synthesized capital that directly affect the identification of territorial capabilities and allow to create an effective development strategy. Using these indicators, it is possible to carry out component-wise and overall assessment of strategic potential in the effective use of synthesized capital of the region. The author’s methodology of strategic potential analysis is proposed, which can be used to assess the strategic potential of the region and to determine the effectiveness of using the resource support of socio-economic system. Region’s strategic component objective assessment presupposes evaluation in dynamics and under the conditions of capacity buildup. Region’s strategic potential development is based on the dynamic evaluation of strategic potential. For the justification of forecast data for groups of indicators of strategic potential for future periods it is possible to use modern software products that allow using methods of econometric analysis to process statistics and predict them based on given sample.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the process by which Chinese universities carry out strategy formation. It aims to provide an insight into the lives of the managers of Chinese universities in the period 2002-2003 which was a time of transition from the regime of President Jiang Zemin to that of President Hu Jintao. Chinese refer to this period as the transition from the third to the fourth generation of leaders. Strategy was defined as a course of action aimed at achieving an organization's purpose and strategy formation was defined as including strategy development and implementation. Answers were sought to the following questions based on data from a small number of universities using stakeholder theory to inform the data collection process: · What is the process by which strategy development and implementation takes place in Chinese universities? · How is the process applied in different universities? · How can an understanding of strategy formation in Chinese universities assist in the development of joint ventures in China by foreign educational institutions? The method of data collection involved interviewing three levels of management in six different universities drawn from three major cities in China. In order to guarantee confidentiality, the identities of the instutions and the individuals involved has been concealed. Background information collected included the history of Chinese universities to 2002 and important features of Chinese culture, society and politics. Stakeholder theory was found to provide a useful framework for analysing the process of strategy formation. It was found that assumptions based on the operations of Australian universities did not apply in China, particularly in the areas of work relationships, reporting and performance management and in the conduct of research. Findings included: · Three approaches to strategy emerged, including the President making unilateral decisions, a consultative approach including stakeholders, and an approach involving consultation with staff. · The process varies between universities depending on factors such as the guanxi relationships of the President. · The learnings from this project can be applied to other joint ventures in education in China.

Abstract:
Today the e-commerce market has become a bigger part of both organizations’ and consumers’ everyday-life. Earlier established strategies within retail can't be relied upon. The online-based organizations don’t act on the same conditions as traditional shops in terms of location, customer service and personal interaction to name a few. These are factors generally important to the traditional strategy formation within retail. E-commerce is an emerging market and to survive a well-formulated strategy formation is crucial in order to endure the environment. The aim of this research is to create an understanding of how strategy is formed in e-commerce organizations. In order to answer the research questions, a qualitative research, including a case study, have been performed. Empirical material has been conducted mainly through semi-structured interviews, with one of Sweden’s largest internet retailers, regarding their ink- and beauty supply segment. Whittington’s (2001) two perspectives; evolutionary and classical, have been used to get different viewpoints on the organization studied. We came to the conclusion that the key factors in strategy formation within e-commerce are experience in combination with available information about the environment they act within. When making recommendations for future studies, a suggestion has been made to examine the whole strategic process and review successful strategies as a consequence of well-analyzed formation. Finally, to examine the impact of maturity of organizations in relation to their strategic processes, would create an understanding of how the relationship between experience within the organization and the data accessible is constructed.

Leavy, Brian. "Strategy formation in Irish complex organisations." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1988. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/34721/.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a comparative study of strategy formation in Irish complex organisations. Four organisations were chosen for study which are representative of the four main types of organisation to be found in the Irish economy,a state agency,a public limited company,a state-owned entreprise and a producer cooperative. The approach taken in this research is multi-level and contextual,an approach which is still very rare in organisational studies. Insight is sought through intensive, longitudinal study of the four organisations over their whole life histories. The central thrust of the inquiry is the empirical examination of how situational context and autonomous organisational behaviour influence organisational strategy and of how these two elements interact. The context - strategy formation link,in particular, is under-explored in the strategy literature. The small national context facilitates the development of a multi-level perspective on the interaction of situational context and organisational action that includes the national, industry and organisational levels of analysis. It also throws the context-organisation interrelationship into greater relief than would be possible through using a similar research design in a much larger national context. The empirical analysis identifies SITUATIONAL CONTEXT,ORGANISATIONAL LEADERS and ORGANISATIONAL HISTORY as the three main elements in strategy formation. It isolates and empirically analyses FIVE important CONTEXTUAL FACTORS that shape strategy, and provides a greater elaboration of the contextual influences on organisational action than that to be found in much of the organisational literature, where the environment of organisations tends to be viewed as homogeneous and residual. It also reveals that the contextual influences on organisational action often arise from INTER-LINKING PROCESSES OF SOCIAL VOLITION across multiple levels of social and economic structure and it examines the nature of these processes. In this way the study goes beyond the predominant conception of contextual influences as 'impersonal forces', a perspective on situational context that also predominates in the organisational literature. The study also provides a FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON the role of LEADERSHIP in strategy formation. It deflects attention away from the predominant pre-occupation in the leadership literature with the personality and personal attributes of the leader. Leadership effectiveness is also seen to be related to the ongoing processual dynamics of leading(i.e. to ongoing performance and the maintenance of credibility over time) and to the nature of the historical challenge presented to individual leaders by situational context and organisational history. A classification of leaders in terms of their historical roles is developed and offered as a useful way of organising future research into the leadership phenomenon. The study then develops, from the data and the analysis,a model of organisational development, based on the concept of ORGANISATIONAL CAREER,which is more existential and less deterministic than that based on the life cycle analogy. These insights are finally synthesised into A RELATIONAL MODEL OF STRATEGY FORMATION and the study ends with an assessment of the utility of this model, and of the related findings, for future research and practice.

Buzuloiu, Carmina Manuela. "The process of strategy formation in high-growth SMEs." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/285100.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the topic of strategy formation in high-growth SMEs. High-growth SMEs represent the growth and job creation engine of an economy; however, little has been understood on how strategy forms and develops in high-growth SMEs. The focus on large organisations has led to a literature gap regarding strategy making in SMEs (Wisener and Millett, 2012). "There is a need for deeper understanding" of strategy formation processes in SMEs (Lofving et al., 2014) and "research focusing on questions such as how firms grow [...] has been neglected." (Wright and Stigliani, 2012) The research objectives are: to understand how strategy forms and develops in high-growth SMEs; to develop a framework for the qualitative study of strategy formation processes in high-growth SMEs; and to identify enablers and barriers related to strategy formation processes in high-growth SMEs. A multiple, retrospective case-study methodology has been used. Extensive case studies built on in-depth interviews with management have been compiled to understand the complexity of the studied phenomenon. The research develops two qualitative research tools based on the literature review: a preliminary framework and an assessment matrix to study strategy formation processes. Furthermore, the research introduces a new approach to strategy charting. The key contributions of this research are as follows: • A holistic view of how strategy processes in high-growth SMEs form and develop is provided. New insights into the structures, characteristics, and other aspects of strategy formation processes have been articulated. • A framework for the qualitative study of strategy formation processes in high-growth SMEs has been developed by applying the cross-case analysis findings to the preliminary framework. • New enablers and barriers related to strategy formation processes in high-growth SMEs have been identified. New findings on the role of strategy formation in achieving growth have been outlined. This dissertation narrows the gap between strategy formation in academia and real life by providing practitioners with detailed case studies which can be used as guidelines for the development of strategy formation processes. The research can also help SMEs' managers to tackle challenges encountered in strategy formation and to support catalysts which enable strategy formation. This dissertation provides exploratory findings into a phenomenon which has been limitedly researched. Further research should seek to generalise and test the findings on additional SMEs.

Edh, Mirzaei Nina. "Involving individuals in the manufacturing strategy formation : Strategic consensus among workers and managers." Doctoral thesis, Chalmers University of Technology, Department of Technology Management and Economics, Operations Management, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-30031.

Full text
Abstract:
Decisions made and actions taken by individuals in the operations function impact the formation of a company’s manufacturing strategy (MS). Therefore, it is important that the MS is understood and agreed on by all employees, that is, strategic consensus among the individuals in the operations function is essential. This research contributes to the current body of knowledge by including a workers’ perspective on MS formation. It is the workers on the shop floor who bring the MS to life in the actual operations through their daily decisions and actions. The MS falls short if the priorities outlined do not materialise in practice as intended. The purpose of this research is to investigate how the individuals in the operations function perceive the MS in order to understand how these individuals are involved in the MS formation. The research is based on five studies, differing by evidence, as follows: one theoretical, three qualitative in the setting of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and one quantitative at a large company. Based on the findings presented in the six appended papers, the results show that empirically and conceptually, workers have been overlooked or given a passive role in the MS formation. Empirically, it is seen that workers and managers do not have a shared understanding of the underlying reasons for strategic priorities; hence, the level of strategic consensus is low. Furthermore, the level of strategic consensus varies among the different MS dimensions depending on their organisational level. Moreover, the empirical findings reveal that internal contextual factors influence the individuals’ perceptions of the MS and the possibilities for strategic consensus. Regarding the external context, the results show that major customers’ strategies influence the subcontractor SMEs’ MS formation. The usage of means of communication in the operations function has also shown to be of importance for how the MS is perceived. Conceptually, the findings indicate that the MS literature tends to treat individuals in the operations function in a deterministic manner; individuals on the shop floor are regarded as manufacturing resources. To ensure a successful MS formation process, where the patterns of the decisions made by the individuals in the operations function forms the MS, the view on human nature within the MS requires a more voluntaristic approach. This research suggests to view the MS formation as an iterative “patterning process” which builds on a reciprocal relationship between workers and managers. The introduction of the patterning process contributes to the research on MS formation by explaining the perception range within the hierarchical levels, by re-defining the hierarchical levels included in the MS formation and by detailing the activities in the MS formation.

Abstract:
As of 2013, the damage caused by corrosion on highway bridges has been estimated to cost approximately 14 billion dollars annually, and this cost has been increasing over the years. Corrosion is one of the natural phenomena that has been slowly deteriorating infrastructure systems across the United States. One of the most problematic types of corrosion is crevice corrosion, which is defined as the formation of rust between overlapping surfaces, such as the case of a splice connection where flanges are attached by splice plates. A significant number of steel bridges in Indiana have developed crevice corrosion in splice connections. Therefore, this research focuses on the crevice corrosion, or “pack rust,” occurring in these structural elements. The application of coatings alone has not been enough to stop pack rust at these connections. In an attempt to look for approaches that can effectively mitigate this problem and maintain the designed service life of bridges, different strategies have been studied and tested. It was found that the proper use of penetrating sealers can be effective in delaying the development of further corrosion, while the use of caulk alone may be problematic as a repair method.

Sgobbi, Francesca. How intentional are the employability strategies of Higher Education Institutions? DINÂMIA'CET-Iscte, November 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.15847/dinamiacet-iul.wp.2023.02.

Abstract:
An employability strategy communicates the commitment of higher education institutions (HEIs) towards students’ future, signals effectiveness and efficiency in resource allocation, and positions HEIs against competing institutions. However, not all HEIs display the same awareness when it comes to the design of a coherent bundle of actions in support of their graduates’ employability. This paper focuses on the formation of employment strategies to test the contrasting hypotheses of planned strategy, that frames strategy as an explicit and purposeful plan fully designed before deployment, and emergent strategy, where the adopted plan gradually unfolds from the interaction among different players and circumstances. Four case studies of Italian and Portuguese HEIs reveal emergent employability strategies that surpass the limitations set by modest intended employability targets. However, lack of guidance from an explicit action plan and limited resources may question the long-term viability of the emerging approaches.

Full text
Abstract:
The Original Objectives were modified and two were eliminated to reflect the experimental results: Objective 1 - Identify additional genetic variability in SlGLK2 and IPin wild, traditional and heirloom tomato varieties Objective 2 - Determine carbon balance and horticultural characteristics of isogenic lines expressing functional and non-functional alleles of GLKsand IP Background: The goal of the research was to understand the unique aspects of chloroplasts and photosynthesis in green fruit and the consequences of increasing the chloroplast capacity of green fruit for ripe fruit sugars, yield, flavor and nutrient qualities. By focusing on the regulation of chloroplast formation and development solely in fruit, our integrated knowledge of photosynthetic structures/organs could be broadened and the results of the work could impact the design of manipulations to optimize quality outputs for the agricultural fruit with enhanced sugars, nutrients and flavors. The project was based on the hypothesis that photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic plastid metabolism in green tomato fruit is controlled at a basal level by light for minimal energy requirements but fruit-specific genes regulate further development of robust chloroplasts in this organ. Our BARD project goals were to characterize and quantitate the photosynthesis and chloroplast derived products impacted by expression of a tomato Golden 2- like 2 transcription factor (US activities) in a diverse set of 31 heirloom tomato lines and examine the role of another potential regulator, the product of the Intense Pigment gene (IP activities). Using tomato Golden 2-like 2 and Intense Pigment, which was an undefined locus that leads to enhanced chloroplast development in green fruit, we sought to determine the benefits and costs of extensive chloroplast development in fruit prior to ripening. Major conclusions, solutions, achievements: Single nucleotide polymorphisms in the promoter, coding and intronicSlGLK2 sequences of 20 heirloom tomato lines were identified and three SlGLK2 promoter lineages were identified; two lineages also had striped fruit variants. Lines with striped fruit but no shoulders were not identified. Green fruit chlorophyll and ripe fruit soluble sugar levels were measured in 31 heirloom varieties and fruit size correlates with ripe fruit sugars but dark shoulders does not. A combination of fine mapping, recombinant generation, RNAseq expression and SNP calling all indicated that the proposed localization of a single locus IP on chr 10 was incorrect. Rather, the IP line harbored 11 separate introgressions from the S. chmielewskiparent, scattered throughout the genome. These introgressions harbored ~3% of the wild species genome and no recombinant consistently recovered the IP parental phenotype. The 11 introgressions were dissected into small combinations in segregating recombinant populations. Based on these analyses two QTL for Brix content were identified, accounting for the effect of increased Brix in the IP line. Scientific and agricultural implications: SlGLK2 sequence variation in heirloom tomato varieties has been identified and can be used to breed for differences in SlGLK2 expression and possibly in the green striped fruit phenotype. Two QTL for Brix content have been identified in the S. chmielewskiparental line and these can be used for increasing soluble solids contents in breeding programs.

Cook, Joshua, Laura Ray, and James Lever. Dynamics modeling and robotic-assist, leader-follower control of tractor convoys. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), February 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/43202.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a generalized dynamics model and a leader-follower control architecture for skid-steered tracked vehicles towing polar sleds. The model couples existing formulations in the literature for the powertrain components with the vehicle-terrain interaction to capture the salient features of terrain trafficability and predict the vehicles response. This coupling is essential for making realistic predictions of the vehicles traversing capabilities due to the power-load relationship at the engine output. The objective of the model is to capture adequate fidelity of the powertrain and off-road vehicle dynamics while minimizing the computational cost for model based design of leader-follower control algorithms. The leader-follower control architecture presented proposes maintaining a flexible formation by using a look-ahead technique along with a way point following strategy. Results simulate one leader-follower tractor pair where the leader is forced to take an abrupt turn and experiences large oscillations of its drawbar arm indicating potential payload instability. However, the follower tractor maintains the flexible formation but keeps its payload stable. This highlights the robustness of the proposed approach where the follower vehicle can reject errors in human leader driving.

Abstract:
Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary is among the world's most successful and omnivorous fungal plant pathogens. Included in the more than 400 species of plants reported as hosts to this fungus are canola, alfalfa, soybean, sunflower, dry bean, and potato. The general inability to develop resistant germplasm with these economically important crops to this pathogen has focused attention on the need for a more detailed examination of the pathogenic determinants involved in disease development. This proposal involved experiments that examined the involvement of protein phosphorylation during morphogenesis (hyphal elongation and sclerotia formation) and pathogenesis (oxalic acid). Data obtained from our laboratories during the course of this project substantiates the fact that kinases and phosphatases are involved and important for these processes. A mechanistic understanding of the successful strategy(ies) used by S . sclerotiorum in infecting and proliferating in host plants and this linkage to fungal development will provide targets and/or novel approaches with which to design resistant crop plants including interference with fungal pathogenic development. The original objectives of this grant included: I. Clone the cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA) catalytic subunit gene from S.sclerotiorum and determine its role in fungal pathogenicity, OA production (OA) and/or morphogenesis (sclerotia formation). II. Clone and characterize the catalytic and regulatory subunits of the protein phosphatase PP2A holoenzyme complex and determine their role in fungal pathogenicity and/or morphogenesis as well as linkage with PKA-regulation of OA production and sclerotia formation. III. Clone and characterize the adenylate cyclase-encoding gene from S . sclerotiorum and detennine its relationship to the PKA/PP2A-regulated pathway. IV. Analyze the expression patterns of the above-mentioned genes and their products during pathogenesis and determine their linkage with infection and fungal growth.

Abstract:
Use of the digital technologies is new and very productive approach for balance of different data. It is very important for balance of supply and demand and for increase of competitiveness of products. Various types of digital models were developed as a result of scientific research, they found reflection in article. Digital models for the description of the list of the sequences of steps and operations of various stages and process in general allow to install system of interrelations between operations and steps and to reach necessary log-ic, increase of effectiveness of any process. Object-relational models for establishment of communications between data of various blocks of databases and functional models of the choice of strategy of data balance form analytical base for justification of the choice of the direction of transformation of data. Models of a combination of a plurality of various data of the offer of products in the form of matrixes of multi-purpose optimization have double effect, because they allow not only to develop various options of data combina-tion, taking into account opportunities of change of location of products over the markets and temporary phases, but also to estimate aggregate useful effect from products. These models together with models of comparison of various options and the choice of optimal solutions allow to generate compatible strategic and current programs of the offer of products as a plurality of the output data balanced with each other and with data of demand. It is providing the best synergetic result. The developed methodology of creation of system of the interconnected digital models for transformation of data and generation of the output data of the situational-strategic program of the offer of products is a cornerstone of formation of new digital econ-omy – of economy of balanced data.
