Abstract:
Strategy offers regional stakeholders an opportunity to collaboratively influence the future direction of their region’s economy. However, limited research has been undertaken with respect to strategy processes that are being used by regional economic development organisations. While there are suggestions for the ideal content of regional economic development strategies, the processes by which these organisations develop and implement strategy have not been investigated. This thesis documents an exploratory research project that utilises a case study methodology to identify and consider the processes applied in three different regional economic development organisations. In order to appreciate the context of regional strategy development, theory on regions, collaboration and strategy is integrated to develop a detailed theoretical framework of twenty seven elements that are thought to contribute to implementation. The presence or absence of these elements in each of the three cases is explored deductively through a review of internal documents and semi-structured interviews with a mix of regional stakeholders. Elements are investigated within cases to understand how strategy is being applied within each particular context. Analysis across cases is documented, identifying both similarities and differences in the presence and absence of elements. The research found that relationships were important to the continuing future of the organisations. Long term planning was absent in all cases and this absence was attributed to contextual factors such as a dynamic external environment, and a dependence on government funding leading to short term planning cycles. There was also a lack of clarity regarding organisational goals. The processes utilised in all cases most closely matched Mintzberg and Waters’ (1998) umbrella strategy, however, all organisations lacked a strategic approach. A tentative model was developed to depict elements thought to be the most significant to collaborative regional strategy implementation. These elements are: leadership on strategic planning; good member to member relationships; realism; long term goals; performance measures tied to long term goals; ongoing review and updating of the strategic plan; relevance of the strategic plan; and consistency of activities with the strategic plan. The need for further research to investigate these potential relationships was indicated.

Networking plays a crucial role in an academic's professional development. The reason for this is locked up in the process of taking advantage of contacts with other people for career and professional purposes. In the past the biggest misconception about networking was that it was unfair to take advantage of your personal and/or professional network to further your career. Although this has been denied by various authors, the perception remains present. The important qualities/traits needed for successful networking are confidence, initiative and comfortable interaction with other people.

Smirnov, Vitaliy. "Business strategy and organisational development : organisational archetypes and sociocognitive processes in the frameworks of configurational approach." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/622112.

Full text
Abstract:
A large number of studies suggest that the content of strategy becomes more multifaceted and elaborate and characterised by progressive development over time. Recently, a growing number of researchers argue that strategy can become simple, stable and inert over time. This study investigates how changes of sociocognitive processes at individual, group and organisational levels influence organisational processes and strategic decisions. It adopts configurational approach to strategy development and its concepts (configurations, transformations, archetypes) as a framework. Thus, the purpose is to provide a characterisation of strategy development by analysing the integration of four key research dimensions (social, cognitive, organisational performance and contextual) into one coherent theoretical structure - the model of organisational archetypes. This four-dimensional model is developed from the analysis of fifty one Ukrainian organisations using quantitative and qualitative research methods (questionnaire, interview and group interview) according to the logical structure of configurational research (modelling the sociocognitive basis, modelling the "fit between research dimensions and modelling configurations and archetypes). Following on from this, the model of organisational archetypes is validated in four other organisations through the development of a test of organisational internal creative environment in order to identify their configurations (current conditions) and archetypes (strategic perspectives). The procedure of this test includes the following sequence of actions: identifying sociocognitive characteristics of organisational members and the organisational internal creative environment, identifying periods of transformation and configuration in the process of organisational development, researching characteristics of the business-environment, and identifying appropriate organisational archetypes. The model of organisational archetypes developed in this thesis allows the identification of current and prospective organisational conditions and making relevant strategic decisions that reflect and anticipate changes in organisational internal and external environments. Thus, changes in the organisational internal creative environment (sociocognitive characteristics of organisational members) reflect changes in the business-environment and organisational performance and transform the characteristics of strategic decisions from multifaceted and elaborate to simple and inert and vice versa.

Robinson, A. J. "Petrol engine development strategy : executive summary." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2000. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/66665/.

Full text
Abstract:
The automotive industry is becoming more global and cosmopolitan, while the markets are becoming fragmented and differentiated because of the sophistication of the customer. This requires the automotive manufacturers to have a product well suited to these factors more quickly and cheaply, which necessitates the accurate definition of the product. Two European automotive manufacturers NPI processes were studied and this showed that poor performance in the product definition phase was deemed to be a major reason for sub-optimal performance in both companies, even though the approaches were very different. It was therefore decided to develop and apply tools to assist in the development of petrol engines to overcome these deficiencies. When these shortcomings are considered in the context of petrol engine development it can be seen through examination of the literature and industry that: • There is no method for the translation of the values of the company or product into tangible engineering terms and in the context of this project, with focus on vehicle and engine performance. This can result in the poor positioning of a vehicle in the market due to inappropriate characteristics • Having defined the required vehicle performance, it is not possible to demonstrate the feel of the vehicle until the hardware is physically available. This means that often there is a long lead-time between the setting of a target and the concept ratification through driving the new vehicle. This often results in a point of no (or very costly) return very early during the programme. • Fuel economy is becoming an increasingly significant issue with the introduction of fiscal penalties for poor fuel consumption vehicles. There are currently no processes available for the calculation of steady state or drive cycle fuel economy which allow for the accurate modelling to include combustion, pumping and friction losses, and the control of the engine with the engine management system To overcome these limitations three main groups of innovative tools/techniques have been developed and applied on new engine and vehicle programmes. • Marque engineering: a proposal to translate the brand objectives into engineering terms has been developed to a level where the engine torque output can be linked to the product position • Engine and vehicle performance simulation: a vehicle has been built to demonstrate how a new vehicle/engine will feel to drive by controlling the original engine performance to allow the simulation of the concept engine performance in the concept vehicle. This means it is possible to demonstrate and ratify a given engine/vehicle performance based on experience of the simulated product and to conduct sensitivity studies to discreet aspects of the performance feel of the vehicle • Steady state and drive cycle fuel economy: simulation programs have been written that take the basic engine efficiency relationships and through manipulation it is possible to determine the exact operating point of the engine, steady state or transient, and then determine the fuel economy. In order to determine the exact operating point it is necessary to consider detailed component data and key calibration data. Therefore it is possible to understand the effects of small changes to engine geometry, components or calibration on the fuel used. These developed techniques have been compared with traditional methods to determine the benefits in the concept confirmation phase of a new programme. This investigation showed that the reductions in phase duration, resource requirements and cost could be achieved in the order of 49, 27 and 17% respectively. This is coupled with the ability to obtain a more accurate product positioning through the capacity precisely to predict the product attributes. To conclude, the ability to define the product well is paramount to the success of an automotive manufacturer, and in support of this my project has developed tools and techniques that will greatly assist the development of petrol engines.

Holtzhausen, Marguerite. "Swartland social development policy and strategy." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/97399.

Full text
Abstract:
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The research question answered by this study is what policy and strategy would give the necessary direction to Swartland Municipality’s (SM’s) social development programmes to maximise its impact on the social well-being of the community? The motivation for the study is the need to prioritise social development projects in order to improve effectiveness and efficiency in this field. The methodology used was a qualitative study by means of a conceptual analysis of the term social development, a literature study of international, national and local legislation and policies as well as group interviews with internal and external stakeholders. Social development was defined for the purposes of this study as the process of strengthening the relationships/ partnerships and linkages between people, resources and/or systems within the scope of poverty reduction, expansion of employment opportunities and social integration, with the goal to achieve well-being for individuals, groups and/or communities. Furthermore a literature study explored relevant legislation and policy documents to give clarity on the municipality’s role of social development. Main findings were that the SA Constitution as supreme law, clearly states the municipal objective is to promote social development and states four functions that relate to social development namely child facilities, basic infrastructure, public amenities and sports facilities. Furthermore social development functions in all municipal departments need to co-ordinate to maximise social development resources. Lastly the municipality’s social development programmes must be supplementary and supportive to the work of the Department of Social Development. Furthermore, engagements were held with internal and external stakeholders of Swartland Municipality and the strategic direction was determined by means of a vision, mission and strategic focus areas. The vision identified is: We build and create sustainable social development partnerships with all our people for strengthening the social fabric of the Swartland community. The social development mission is: We initiate, build and promote social development opportunities with the focus on sustainability, which specifically refers to financial viability in the long term, forming partnerships with the community and service providers, not harming the environment and operating within legal powers and functions. Five strategic focus areas flowing from the vision and mission were identified. To promote collaboration and co-ordination is the pivotal focus area. Social development has to be co-ordinated by means of a social development forum represented of all sectors (government, NGO, faith-based, business, agriculture). The other focus areas were: promoting child development/establishing child facilities, lobbying for the vulnerable, facilitating access to the economy and promoting youth development. The impact of service delivery according to the five focus areas must be measured in totality by means of the Human Development Index and reflected in the integrated development plan.

Abstract:

Today’s industries face an increasing global competition. Decision makers have to deal with different kinds of uncertainty, a complex business ecosystem, a high pace of change, and an unforgiving market when less than best decisions are made. One, among many others, approach that can lead to these better decisions is to have a strategy.

The objective of this research is:

To design a model that supports the formulation of product strategy and manufacturing strategy in accordance to each other and thereby facilitate and encourage continuous communication and collaboration between product development and manufacturing system development.”

To help meet the objective, three chapters of frame of reference are presented; Strategy, development processes and design for X. The frame of reference together with discussions in industry (ITT Flygt) has in an iterative manner lead to a suggested model that supports the formulation of product strategy and manufacturing strategy.

Future research will improve, evaluate and validate both the usability of the model and the results from using it in practise. A method for using the model will be developed.

The research project presented in this licentiate thesis is one of seven parallel research projects with a shared objective – to develop systematic working procedures, a generic decision model and decision sub models that support the practical design of a workshop that supports the business strategy of the company.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the process by which Chinese universities carry out strategy formation. It aims to provide an insight into the lives of the managers of Chinese universities in the period 2002-2003 which was a time of transition from the regime of President Jiang Zemin to that of President Hu Jintao. Chinese refer to this period as the transition from the third to the fourth generation of leaders. Strategy was defined as a course of action aimed at achieving an organization's purpose and strategy formation was defined as including strategy development and implementation. Answers were sought to the following questions based on data from a small number of universities using stakeholder theory to inform the data collection process: · What is the process by which strategy development and implementation takes place in Chinese universities? · How is the process applied in different universities? · How can an understanding of strategy formation in Chinese universities assist in the development of joint ventures in China by foreign educational institutions? The method of data collection involved interviewing three levels of management in six different universities drawn from three major cities in China. In order to guarantee confidentiality, the identities of the instutions and the individuals involved has been concealed. Background information collected included the history of Chinese universities to 2002 and important features of Chinese culture, society and politics. Stakeholder theory was found to provide a useful framework for analysing the process of strategy formation. It was found that assumptions based on the operations of Australian universities did not apply in China, particularly in the areas of work relationships, reporting and performance management and in the conduct of research. Findings included: · Three approaches to strategy emerged, including the President making unilateral decisions, a consultative approach including stakeholders, and an approach involving consultation with staff. · The process varies between universities depending on factors such as the guanxi relationships of the President. · The learnings from this project can be applied to other joint ventures in education in China.

Abstract:

Purchasing is a function that has developed form a more clerical function to a function of strategic importance over the last 20 years. As a result of this development we have observed that many fi rms engage in supplier development activities as a part of their purchasing strategy.

This thesis consists of four different essays describing various aspects of supplier development and an essay that summarise and connects the four essays as well as giving a broad introduction to the fi eld of research.

Small and medium sized firms are of special interest when studying supplier or supply chain since they are important links in their supply chains but have fewer resources and therefore limited possibilities to develop by themselves. In the thesis three of the essays describe different ways in which this can be conducted.

Positive benefits from supplier and supply chain development reported in the thesis are lower costs, shorter lead times, increased competence and an overall improved competitiveness.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous research has generated a substantial body of knowledge regarding the exploration and exploitation of opportunities, two of the main manifest activities of entrepreneurship. This thesis does not primarily examine any of these activities; instead it investigates an important question regarding what happens between them. It seeks to answer why some of the identified opportunities are selected for exploitation. It does so by building on, and contributing to, a research stream that struggles with the link between the entrepreneurial activity of firms and theory about strategy. One of the main contributions of this thesis is the identification of a number of strategic motive dimensions that are associated with the pursuit of corporate ventures. It also demonstrates how these motives are related to significant venture differences, thereby connecting corporate entrepreneurship to strategy in a means-ends relationship. In other words, it provides insight into how strategy is the why of entrepreneurship, and entrepreneurship is the how of strategies (that involve business development). The analysis was based on quantitative data from 274 venture attempts in 222 firms, belonging to a population of 1737 small- and medium-sized manufacturing firms in Sweden. Target respondents were the CEO:s. The findings indicate that venture selection can be influenced by both offensive and defensive strategic motives. In addition, it turned out that ventures can be of both proactive and reactive nature. Together, these two dimensions describe how the venture relates to the firm’s strategic circumstances. To better understand top managers’ intentions, the two dimensions were complimented with measurements of what the firm tries to affect with the venture, i.e. to which facet of business the venture efforts are directed (economy, competition, or competence development). The three dimensions, identified through factor analysis, were labeled “posture”, “adaptive style”, and “orientation”. Alternative non-strategic motives, as well as items for validity evaluation, were included in the survey for comparison. Combinations of the motive dimensions were then presented as “motive profiles”, for four types of ventures identified through clustering techniques. Furthermore, another important contribution is the examination of Roberts & Berry’s hypothesis: That the extent and direction of business development determine the amount of uncertainty faced during venture execution, which in turn is proposed to influence the probability of a positive outcome. Regarding these issues, the study was able to refine the mixed findings in previous research, through the investigation of larger firm- and venture-level samples. The obtained results imply that the distance between the venture and the current business of the firm, in terms of products and technologies, is unimportant for venture outcome. However, a small negative effect of market uncertainty, in turn related to market development distance, was confirmed.

Abstract:
This study investigated the role of language in the frequency and nature of preschool children's memory strategies. Twenty children, aged 18-33 months, were observed during a memory-for-location task for their use of potentially strategic behaviors. Each child accompanied the researcher while she hid a stuffed toy in a natural location (e.g., under a pillow). The children were told to remember the toy's location, in order to retrieve the toy when a bell rang after a delay of 3 minutes. During the delay interval, six behaviors occurred: looking, pointing, approaching, attempting to retrieve, peeking, and verbalizations. These behaviors could be used by the child in order to aid their memory of the hiding place. A control trial was also included and was like the experimental trial in all respects except that the toy remained visible during the delay interval. Frequencies of the target behaviors were compared among themselves and also were correlated with scores on two standardized language measures. There were three main findings, (1) these young preschool children produced more of the target behaviors when memory was required than when it was not, (2) non-verbal strategies were used more often than verbal ones, and (3) verbal proficiency predicted the use of memory strategies. Post-hoc tests indicated that children who had more advanced language skills were less likely to use overt memory strategies but, as the task progressed, children who earned higher percentile scores on the language tests talked more during the experiment. These results are consistent with developmental theories that emphasize the initial cost of using memory strategies to solve a problem and the constraints inherent in low language knowledge. They also point to the importance of attending to non-verbal behaviors when evaluating cognitive skills in very young children.

Abstract:
Nowadays there are several different types of ways to build a mobile application, through web technologies, or through mobile manufacturers’ languages. Thus, in this study we focus on the three major mobile application development strategies: Native, Hybrid, and Web to Native. This plurality of solutions renders the selection of a mobile application development strategy complex. Hence, this study aims at understanding how developers deal with the selection of a mobile development approach. This thesis analyses their behaviour thanks to a survey that collects crucial information about developers searching habits. The latter analysis concludes that general guidelines are not sufficient to provide a tailored and accurate selection of mobile application development approach. Therefore, this study aims at improving the activity of finding a mobile application development strategy. In addition to this, the past and current states of the subject are discussed in a critical manner, which therefore results in using an analytical research approach. Knowing the aforementioned, a design science research approach is used to outline the iteration processes that occurred during this study. Each step of the study is thoroughly treated thanks to a tailored design cycle. Consequently, a mobile development strategy-finding model has been built by combining literature review and survey’s results. This model highlights the importance of the criteria extracted from the literature review and the survey. To support and allow constant self-evolution of the model, a suggestion of web platform is proposed. Finally, this model has been compared with a Titanium model. The result of this comparison outlines that the model created in this study seems more usable because it comprises the three major mobile application development strategies whereas the Titanium model only focuses in native solutions and its own hybrid solution. Moreover, the Titanium model focuses on selling its product rather than showing why it is better than the other mobile application development strategies.

Abstract:
Twenty years ago the UAE was one of the least developed countries of the world. Now, the UAE has achieved an income level comparable to that of the industrialized countries. The UAE did not pass through the hypothetical development "stages" that most developed countries are argued to have passed through. Rather, the UAE's large oil-revenues have enabled her to move immediately to the stage of high mass consumption. However, the UAE is still dependent on the export of a single depletable product, oil, and would be unable to maintain its economic growth if there were to be a fall in oil prices. Looking ahead to the economic development of the UAE in the twenty-first century, this thesis reviews alternative strategies of development that take into account new insights from economics and social science. The thesis explores a possible role for exports of services from the UAE, to diversify the economy and to sustain economic development. It is claimed in the thesis that there is a link between international trade in services and induced "knowledge-based" growth, which can contribute to development. The thesis concludes that a development strategy based on knowledge-based services could diversify the sources of national income in the UAE and sustain long-run economic growth performance. It explores further the policy implications of such a development strategy.

Mega-cities are the centers of population, economy, culture and political power. Yet, along with these characteristics, they are also the greatest source of energy consumption, resource depletion, and pollution. In order for developing countries to take a more sustainable development path, they must address their growing demand for energy and strive to find solutions to reduce their demand and increase their efficiency. Mega-cities stand out as natural targets for such solutions given their extreme population and waste generation. Specifically, urban sprawl is a major source of energy inefficiency. Not only does it lead to more vehicle miles travels, more fuel consumption, more air pollution, but also to inefficiencies in infrastructure provision. De-densification of residential and commercial districts causes an increase in both energy services and materials. Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is an effective method of fighting the negative impacts of urban sprawl, by reshaping the travel and land-use patterns into a more sustainable form. To achieve the full potential of a TOD it is critical to have long-term strategic planning, and cross-jurisdictional, complementary, and comprehensive policies and institutions. To effectively reduce energy consumption through TOD the policies must span multiple jurisdictions and cover the areas of transportation, urban planning, and land-use. These policies must be aimed at reducing vehicle miles traveled while blustering transit ridership.

Abstract:
The principal matter that disposes this thesis is concerning the changes in the chemical firms for “new strategic boundaries”. The main objective is to understand and characterize the heterogeneous chemical companies’ strategies and to classify in distinct groups. The first premise of this thesis is that the accumulative scientific learning or IPR (Intellectual property rights) is not anymore the main barrier to new entrants into the segment; it was replaced by finance supremacy, HESQ (health, environmental, safety and quality) certifications and intangible values (brand, supply chain, network, clusters, customer understanding, marketing, social responsibility, management and skilled labor). Several new players appeared supported by national governments and using licensees or technologies from specialized engineering firms (SEF), raw material suppliers & equipment fabricators to produce locally and replace imported products, furthermore those new players through foreign direct investment( FDI), merger & acquisition (M&A) or joint ventures (JV) expand their operations abroad in direct concurrence with the traditional groups. Second premise is that the latest competitive environment are recreating new strategic firms’ boundaries separated in sub sectors like hybrid science, basic or specialty chemical inducing the main player’s actions in product portfolio , fixed assets, process, R&D , M&A, network, JV, alliances, licenses , knowledge capital and marketing. The thesis concludes that the changes in the chemical sector evolve inside a new framework typify at 4 main axes: value creation, globalization, restructuring and regulation

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 269-279.
Initiated by the Second Carnegie Conference on Poverty in South Africa, this study analyses the causes and extent of underdevelopment and poverty in Namaqualand and outlines a possible approach to redress these problems. Namaqualand is shown to be a sparsely populated area, the physical characteristics of which are both a fundamental cause of underdevelopment and a constraint on future development. It is argued that competition for land and other resources is an important cause of poverty in the region. The processes by which the indigenous population was forced into uninhabitable areas, and mission stations were established to reserve land for local people, are traced. The contradictory role of missionaries is analysed as well as Government and other's efforts to coerce the region's inhabitants into wage labour. Relevant literature is reviewed to elucidate underdevelopment and the scope for future development. The conclusion drawn is that no body of theory adequately explains Namaqualand's underdevelopment or offers workable solutions. An eclectic approach is adopted. The present socio-economic characteristics of the population and the state of development in the major economic sectors are described. It is evident that there is little economic diversification. Namaqualand's inhabitants depend heavily on economic activities vulnerable to marked fluctuations. Employment opportunities are limited. Living standards are constrained by poor education, physical and social mobility. Current development projects and strategies are listed and analyzed. Initiatives taken by various development agents are found to have been retarded by the constraints already mentioned. It is concluded that they lack co-ordination and do not form part of a clearly formulated development strategy. A development proposal encompassing distinct strategies is presented. These are: (i) to enhance economic mobility (ii) to improve the quality of life (iii) to exploit development potential. The ways in which these strategies complement one another are outlined, and government's role emphasized. It is argued that efforts should be concentrated on activities in which Namaqualand appears to have a comparative advantage. The need for applied research into appropriate projects and techniques is stressed as is community involvement in all phases. Close co-operation between development agents is essential. Finally in an addendum some constraints and parallels between Namaqualand and some smaller black homelands in South Africa are drawn. Statutory influx control has not determined Namaqualand's low population mobility. Emigration is possible and should constitute a vital element of any development strategy for the region. The effect on the rest of South Africa would be negligible compared to the black homeland's surplus population. At the same time the need for local government initiatives and for the transfer of public resources into such regions is stressed.

This report describes my experience of 9 months as an intern in the department of Research & Development and Innovation at Eurotrials Scientific Consultants, a company dedicated to clinical research and scientific consulting. Pharmaceutical Companies are struggling to deliver improved R&D productivity in the face of rising development costs, stagnating revenue forecasts and continued late stage terminations. In order to increase the number of New Molecular Entities, Pharmaceutical Companies are establishing partnerships with academia and research institutes. With this purpose I researched Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices partnership areas of interest, developed basic research projects with academia and research institutes and participated in technology transfer activities. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to participate in clinical research projects namely investigator driven studies and to be part of an external formation. In conclusion, the training allowed me to put in practice what I learnt in the University, functioning as a bridge between the academic and the working worlds.

Abstract:
The two areas of theory upon which this research was based were 'strategy development process' (SDP) and 'complex adaptive systems' (CAS), as part of complexity theory, focused on human social organisations. The literature reviewed showed that there is a paucity of empirical work and theory in the overlap of the two areas, providing an opportunity for contributions to knowledge in each area of theory, and for practitioners. An inductive approach was adopted for this research, in an effort to discover new insights to the focus area of study. It was undertaken from within an interpretivist paradigm, and based on a novel conceptual framework. The organisationally intimate nature of the research topic, and the researcher's circumstances required a research design that was both in-depth and long term. The result was a single, exploratory, case study, which included use of data from 44 in-depth, semi-structured interviews, from 36 people, involving all the top management team members and significant other staff members; observations, rumour and grapevine (ORG) data; and archive data, over a 5½ year period (2005-2010). Findings confirm the validity of the conceptual framework, and that complex adaptive systems theory has potential to extend strategy development process theory. It has shown how and why the strategy process developed in the case study organisation by providing deeper insights to the behaviour of the people, their backgrounds, and interactions. Broad predictions of the 'latent strategy development' process and some elements of the strategy content are also possible. Based on this research, it is possible to extend the utility of the SDP model by including peoples' behavioural characteristics within the organisation, via complex adaptive systems theory. Further research is recommended to test limits of the application of the conceptual framework and improve its efficacy with more organisations across a variety of sectors.

“Without a strategy the organization is like a ship without a radar, going around in circles” (Joel Ross and Michael Kami). Any company has at least one orientation, a goal or a plan for its business. Long-term operational plans or orientations can be considered as business strategy, and after a strategic implementation, strategic managers or business owners should review and evaluate the strategy implementation results to ensure the right direction or adjust the strategy in line with the practice to achieve the highest efficiency according to the objectives of the strategy. Viet Nam Development Bank (VDB) is a governmental tool to manage the State’s development investment capital. Although VDB has just been established and operated for non-profit purposes, VDB has also developed an operational strategy to gradually reduce the pressure of subsidizing interest rates on the State budget, and to make VDB become a professional bank. Therefore, the aim of the study is to examine the strategies that VDB has built; and evaluate the relevance of those strategies to the practices. By this, the study will help to revise VDB’ strategies as a kind of main results.

China still presumed as a menace to other countries. The experience of China development is different from the westerns. The purpose of strategic culture studies attempt to explain the strategic operations which the general theory hardly explain. The research is based on China’s strategic culture, behavior and character to survey the intension of the strategy of "Peaceful development". After the study found that "Peaceful development" strategy can prove that it is useful to seize time and space for China, as well as the stable economic relationship with other countries. Full text
Abstract:
The current burgeoning property boom coupled with new opportunities created in and around Umhlanga has enabled Moreland (MD) to capitalize on lucrative property development. Although MD's residential division has attained phenomenal sales growth, this is however, not altruistically representative of a demographically multiracial South Africa. Demographic sales representation is exemplified by a discriminatory bias towards specific race groups. Residential sales portfolio reflects a discernible absence of Black African customers. Research undertaken for MD indicates that affluent Black Africans possess the wealth necessary for MD purchases. The problem statement delineates MD's desire to target and capitalize on emerging market trends by restructuring the division's strategy in the delivery of multiracial, especially elite black African, residential consumer patterns in Durban. This exploratory study through perceptual mapping, investigates multiracial market perceptions of Durban's residential consumer behavioral emerging trends. Primary data collated from intercept interviews with: real estate managers representing two affluent Durban areas (Westville and Umhlanga); affluent Black professionals as well as respondent data gleaned from the research questionnaire survey, is comparatively evaluated with similar studies conducted in America, United Kingdom, Australia and the Far East through an intensive literature review. Distinguished global emerging residential trends supplemented by eminent SA emerging patterns are identified for the assessment of local applicability. The amalgamation of primary and secondary data is utilized as a platform to identify strategies that would enable Moreland Developments to materialize the company's objective of attaining enhanced market expansion through the fulfillment of multiracial target consumer needs. This study encloses a strategically analytical expose, outlining the implementation of strategic options available to the company. It is envisaged that through the implementation of a selection of apposite strategies necessary to capture and exploit a lucrative multiracial emerging target market, MD would elevate its position to carve an enviable niche of a market leader and global player in the residential arena. Identifiable areas for future research are proposed.

Abstract:
The population growth and sophisticated demands of present day lifestyle place tremendous pressure on organisations resulting in industrialisation and diminishing the planets natural resources. Sustainability of the environment for both the present and future generations calls for a paradigm shift of stakeholders especially business organisations to take measures to curb wastage and become more environmentally conscious. A business's survival depends on the strategy it pursues in conjunction with the demands it faces in its operating environment. This thesis has evaluated Total's business using the tools of strategic management and studies the sustainable development strategies and initiatives adopted by this multinational corporation. The study is exploratory and links Total's business strategy to sustainable development. An in depth literature review was carried out on the theoretical aspects of strategic management and sustainable development. These included the strategic process, macro; industry; and internal environments, Porter' five forces model, core competencies, strategic intent, and the evaluation of strategy using the criteria of suitability, acceptability and feasibility by Johnson and Scholes. This followed through with a discussion of the major landmarks on sustainable development including the World Conservation Strategy, Brundtland Report, evolution of sustainable development, evaluation criteria, indicators, and the development of a model that was used in chapter four. The case study of Total is also presented discussing historical, financial, strategic and sustainable development material both at Total's international operations in France and the South African subsidiary. The research findings indicate that Total is a world-class company demonstrating success in the business, environmental and social arenas. It committed resources to both sustainable development and business development, producing good results in 2003. The company acceded to the requirements of Agenda 21, which called on countries to reduce pollution, emissions and the use of precious natural resources. Governments need to lead this change but emphasises that everyone can play their part in tackling non-sustainable practices. In this way, local actions can lead to the solution of global problems. Successful realisation of sustainable development involves a change in both ideas and actions. Globally sustainable development has gained prominence and hence it is time that it became an integral component of the strategy development process.

Tourism business development has become a trend around the world. Many governments have paid more attention on the development by knowing the advantages that tourism business could drive other local business business, create more job opportunities, and also raise the living standard. Tourism business has even become the major resource of foreign exchange in many countries. After the martial law got released, Taiwan government also speeded up its tourism business development and had created evident achievement. Since 1993, the year Matsu terminated its military base administration regulation; its local economy, which mainly encircled military service business during those old days, has been seriously influenced due to the deduction of military force. Tourism business development seems to be the only choice for Matsu. With specialties as the granite hill terrain, traditional East-Fujian style buildings, plus constructions such as rugged combat sap, Matsu are in very good conditions to develop tourism business. So, “To build up the tourism county” becomes the common target for all in Matsu. However, because of some geographic limitation and its incomplete development on transportation, electricity and water supplies, and accommodations, its tourism business is still at the basic stage and needs more study and work to support its development. This essay will focusing the exploration of the tourism business development in Taiwan, Jin-men and Peng-hu islands that possess of the same conditions as Matsu and by adapting the theory of TOWS matrix analysis, value chain analysis to develop the competitive strategy of tourism business development in Matsu.

This study seeks to develop a model to evaluate a Technology Cluster in terms of its resources, fields of business, and direction of its development. The Cluster has its own linkages between firms in-and-outside of the Cluster for making business as well as all obtaining the resources required. Then, the author proposes the methodology to operationalize current state of necessary elements of the Cluster including human resources, supply chains, social networks, financial resources, and entrepreneurship activity. The study further extends to propose the model to plan desirable state of the Cluster. Analysis of differences between current state of the Cluster with desired one gives the possibility to construct Strategic Program of Cluster Development. The ultimate goal of this assessment of the Cluster is to increase index of entrepreneurship activity to the point where the Internal Forces of Cluster are prevailing on External Forces or, in other words, activities of Cluster Management. The increase should be achieved by developing model which uses Complement Forces provided by Cluster Management or Government Institutes as purpose to improve all needed weak nodes of the Model. With the technology now highly developed, the world has become an era of globalization, high speed processing, and knowledge-intensive, how to meet the rapidly changing market needs and the competitive environment has become an important topic in organizational development. Previous studies have shown that a market-oriented development strategy of the organizations will play a vital role which has a significant impact on organizations to gain their competitive advantage and to create their customers’ value. That is, if a company's policy does not meet the organization's mission and goals, it will undermine the competitive advantage and business development. This study explores the issues of aligning strategy and organization development from a market-oriented perspective (i.e., customer orientation, competitor orientation, cross-functional coordination among the departments). By means of depth interviews to collect data and data analysis, this study shows: in the telecommunications environment and under technology considerations, the developing process of case corporation can be divided into three phases, each phase of the business thinking is reflected to the allocation of resources activities. The first phase: the changes in market conditions? case corporate adjusted its organizational structure to reduce personnel costs and related equipment. The second phase: the early development of network technology, the formation of teams helps case corporate to improve its service quality. The third phase: organization growth, case corporate expands its sales team and led the design of training mechanisms. The results of this study show that case corporate passed through three developing process under different business environment and adjusted its strategy to develop new policy. A market-oriented strategy allows case corporate to improve its service quality and enrich its business activities. Furthermore, case corporate developed its own aligning strategy which is able to react to market changes and create its customers’ overall value.

The entire system of air transportation safety included aviation safety and aviation security. Aviation safety refers to issues of aircraft damage or people injured which caused by mental carelessness, machine failure or bad weather. Aviation security confers about people injured or dead because of malfunction on ground facilities and aircraft that caused by intended destroy. Aviation security may seem to be a symbol of national security, it occurs as threaten of a nation’s safety. Because aviation security is related to personal intention which bring great damages or even deaths. It is very difficult to find a way out to prevent it. The main purpose of this research is to make a survey of the tendency toward international aviation security development, and to analyze the existent constriction of aviation security in our country. Furthermore, we should plan out strategies of aviation security development in the near future by observing the tendency toward international aviation security development and try our best to solve urgent problems efficiently. In the beginning of the research, we used the Ground theory, by the steps of open coding, axial coding and selective coding to collect relative references and information, and organized the perfect structure of aviation security composed of aviation security system and aviation security scheme. Meanwhile, we combine Delphi method to calculate the consensus deviation index(CDI) with investigations of all the suggestions and advises by all the experts whom I interviewed. The strategy of aviation security development is approximately divided into aviation security system and aviation security scheme. By the demand of discretion, we figure out a strategy according to the characteristics of both the aviation security system and scheme. And the development of strategy must rely on the connections and assistance of relevant measures. Therefore, the most important thing of this research is to put it into practice. Especially the task of aviation security, which need complete aviation security scheme to accomplish.

After the Cold War, trade liberalization has become a modern trend. Both multilateral frameworks under the WTO (World Trade Organization) or regional and bilateral free trade agreements are all important means for every country to develop trade liberalization. Now FTA has become an important way to achieve trade liberalization especially after the Doha Round which could not be effectively carried out. Since 1978, China's reform and open policy, economic development has become the primary goal. With the enhancement of economic strength, China has more integrated into the global economy, and in 2003 it formally joined the WTO. Then China committed to the development of FTA strategy. The signing of the FTA is not only for economic interests but also some other important factors such as security and diplomacy, domestic politics and economy and leverage. In conclusion, taking China - ASEAN FTA, China - Australia FTA and China - Iceland FTA as examples verify these four factors.

Since the popularization of the Internet and the ever-changing computer technology, online learning has become an important way of learning. Many universities have set up online education courses in the curriculum. However, it has become an important research topic to explore if students’ learning performance has been upgraded after investing so much manpower and financial resources. Previous studies asserted that learning strategies affect learning performance. This study emphasizes a key factor of successful learning is how to utilize learning strategies. Thus, an assessment which can evaluate on-line learning strategies is essential to know students’ learning performances. In this study, the researchers have developed a measurement to assess on-line learning strategies based on Pintrich’s Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ), on-line questionnaire and interviews. Practically, the results of this study can help students to identify where insufficient uses of the strategies are, and thus enhance trainings on learning strategies. The results also provide schools valuable resources when designing online courses, and incorporate learning strategy training courses into online education.

Tourism industry is an important non-smokestack industry that many countries highly valued. Tourism and IT industries are considered to be the star industry for the 21st century, especially of creating employment opportunities and earn foreign exchange. With the development and progress of social economy, Taiwanese started to pay attention on their leisure life and spend more time on travelling. As a result, Taiwan tourism is growing better and better. The tourist amusement enterprises keep investing on massive equipments and carnival theme activities, which not only provides tourists better entertaining experiences but also favorable ticket price to attract more traffic flow. However, due to shorter life cycle and heavy cost of the mechanical equipments, competition among operators is intensified. On the other hand, the increasing of amusement substitutes offers tourists more choices, thus, Taiwan tourist amusement enterprise has faced serious impact on both operation and development. The purpose of this research is to find out Taiwan tourist amusement industry’s competitive edges and future development strategy by exploratory research and market competitive analysis, and via SWOT and Porter''s Five Forces Analysis to approach Taiwan’s tourism industry structure. Base on the research have discovered that the Taiwan tourism products are abundant and diverse. Except the competition among 24 tourist amusement operations, there are more substitute products competition from lower entrance fees state-own recreation properties and recreation farm. Tourists can choose and achieve their purpose based on their requirements. Facing the fierce competition environment, the development strategy for amusement operators to take into account are updating facilities, hold a carnival activities regularly, and offering favorable prices. Thus, it makes Taiwan tourism industry development into a competition circulation of “price” and “quality”. However the favorable price can approach high revenue in a short period of time, but in return just only a virtual market sharing. As Taiwan tourism industry facing the decreasing of travelling population and ageing- society, they should develop the business in full range. Except installing exciting facilities to attract youth group, furthermore they should provide an appropriate products to ageing group and family. Improving service quality and creating brand image is the core strategy for the operators to achieve. Tourism industry provides high quality services to clients which is benefit to promote industrial image, and make it not so easy to be replaced. It would make tourists would like to revisit the venue and create tourism value and bring in revenue.
