Full textChiral tertiary alcohols and quaternary stereocenters are important moieties widespread in natural products and pharmaceuticals, their enantioselective construction is therefore pivotal. During this thesis, we focused our interest on these motifs using an isothiourea-catalyzed indirect kinetic resolution. The strategy was decomposed in stereoselective two-steps sequence: 1) diastereocontrolled preparation of racemic substrates, secondary-tertiary diols and secondary alcohols bearing quaternary stereocenter, then 2) a kinetic resolution of the secondary alcohol indirectly controlling the adjacent center which is either a tertiary alcohol or either quaternary center. This indirect strategy, different from the previous studies, demonstrated its efficiency, its generality and its simplicity, by the discrimination of only two functional groups. On the other hand, by applying amplification of enantioselectivity on kinetic resolution of diols, we worked on enantioselective preparation of stereotriads. With this approach, several building blocks were obtained in a high level of enantioselectivity controlling the stereochemistry of fluorinated tetrasubstituted centers, of stereotriads and of a stereopentad. Finally, a straightforward access to flavonoïds was established combining the double kinetic resolution with an intramolecular nucleophilic aromatic substitution opening interesting synthetic perspectives towards a family of bioactive molecules

Full textThis thesis focuses on the process of demilitarization of war in Russian strategic thought between 1993 and 2016. While significant research has been carried out on the implementation of Russian indirect strategies in post-Soviet and Western countries, the analysis of their conceptual roots and of the military strategists who produce them is still lacking. Consequently, both the identification of the concepts and notions actually used by Russian military theorists, and the understanding of the underlying logics which structure post-Soviet Russian strategic thought, are hampered. Based on an analysis of Russian military literature, still hardly explored by research, on doctrinal documents and speeches by Russian military and political officials, this thesis in history also draws on a biographical examination of the main flag and field officers of the country, as well as civilians close to the Russian General Staff and the Russian Defense Ministry. This thesis goes beyond an analysis of the concepts, notions and debates by which Russian military theorists have tried to understand the characteristics of a modern war, which is less and less focused on armed struggle. It explores the cognitive frameworks of these strategists, comprised of beliefs and perceptions which, although often overlooked in the post-Soviet Russian military context, are key to an essential understanding of the Russian military doctrinal and institutional changes between 1993 and 2016

Full textThe aim of the current study was to examine the use of communication strategies in verbal interactions between secondary students of French as a Foreign language. To this end, a corpus containing the verbal interactions of 36 secondary students of French from four different high schools in the UK, was selected and scanned for communication strategies, drawing on Dörnyei and Scott’s taxonomy (1997) employing an interactionist lens. Findings reveal that students used mostly indirect strategies, notably filler words and self-repetitions in order to gain time to think and to maintain the conversation. Direct strategies were also employed frequently, in particular self-correction and code-switch, the change to a shared first language (L1). Self-correction served mainly the purpose of adjusting the message to achieve and enhance shared meaning, while the switch to the L1 was usually employed to alleviate communication difficulties and establish a relationship with the speaking partners based on a shared L1. It is noteworthy that interactional strategies, especially questions in the second language (L2), did not feature highly in the interactions. This points to a need for more explicit instruction, particularly in interactional strategies, so that students are able to negotiate meaning by asking questions and clarifying issue, achieve shared meaning and can sustain a conversation in the L2 without having to resort to the L1.

Full textThis thesis reports on an empirical study of 3rd and 4th grade students in a German-French bilingual school. The study consisted of research subjects solving exercises by using the thinkaloud method, after which film and transcription analysis allowed for a detailed examination of the strategies used during the exercises. Such strategies have been termed "language usagestrategies" and have been distinguished from learning and communication strategies. This distinction is important because when students use their L2 in this context, their goal is not to learn the language or to communicate, rather, it is to solve the exercise. The students used and combined many cognitive, compensatory, metacognitive, social and affective strategies during the Think aloud Protocols. Also the individual interviews revealed that the students manifested a large number of language usage strategies, suggesting that they are conscious of strategy usage when using their L2

Full textThe interest in manipulation is growing in all areas of human communication. It is fully realised mainly through the language, whether combined or not with other means of communication. However, in linguistics, studies conducted on this subject are virtually non-existent.Manipulation by the discourse is an effective solution for realising the communication that seems compromised when the tension is extreme between the goals of the speaker on the one hand, and the means available including constraints of the context, on the other hand. The strategy of manipulation by the discourse is similar to rhetoric, while diverting it, because manipulation must keep secret its objectives and its means of realisation. Although it may use argumentation, most often, it avoids it.Political discourse is one of the best examples of this extreme tension which is necessary to the manipulation. The 2007 presidential campaign in France is the most recent and perhaps most suitable model for the study of the manipulation by the discourse. This research aims to report on linguistic means of achieving manipulation strategies in a global approach of discourse analysis. It proceeds by a detailed examination of its various formal supports: semantic variations, syntactic and discourse organization, interactions between the constituents, the role of the repetition, the implication etc. Given the importance of the context in its realization, the pragmatic approach, with the theory of the speech acts, turned out to be the most appropriate choice. Through many examples based on a corpus of 195 political speeches, it helps explain how the macro-speech act of manipulation functions, and it helps develop a global theory of manipulation by the discourse
