Abstract:
The global decision-making methodology is a simple and effective tool for decision-making. It bypasses the need to determine the cost of service or cost of product as well as the product’s or service’s profit. Global decision-making methodology works well for pricing decisions, make-or-buy decisions, termination of services, bid pricing, determining service mix, and investment decisions. The methodology consists of three stages and provides practical tools for decision-making such as the measurement profile and the cost-utilization diagram. The methodology takes into consideration economic benefits as well as strategic benefits and intangible ones. It is simple to use, intuitive, and clear to communicate.

Abstract:
Case study is an important pedagogical tool not only to facilitate classroom teaching, but is also a research tool used widely in academia and industry. Every workplace situation calls for decision making and managerial skill. While some situations are more complex and far-reaching than the others, all decisions are equally important for the businesses in the overall landscape. On one hand, strategic decisions call for sharp business acumen and experience; on the other hand, operational decisions call for tact and eye for detail. Businesses employ unique solutions to solve their problem which is often recorded as a case study. These case studies are an effective tool to enhance learning. It stimulates the students to integrate classroom-learning with application orientation to solve real live problems. The growth in case writers coupled with availability of good cases has made industry and academia to embrace case methods. An initiative to support and encourage build indigenous case studies, this book is a compilation of the cases presented at the Management Case Conference organised by PSG Institute of Management in 2021

Krebs, Dennis L. Survival of the Virtuous. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197629482.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Survival of the Virtuous offers an account of how moral traits evolved in the human species. It explains why we are not necessarily bad by nature, why we are not evolved to look out only for number one, and why nice guys need not finish last. It offers an account of how virtuous behaviors such as altruism, justice, honesty, loyalty, self-control, purity, and respect for authority evolved in our species (and in other species as well). It argues that the key to solving puzzles of morality such as what it is, how we acquire moral traits, why we sometimes behave badly, and how we make moral decisions lies in figuring out what adaptive functions moral traits served in early human environments and how they are influenced by social learning, culture, and strategic social interactions in the modern world. It offers evidence that the primary function of virtuous behaviors is to enable individuals to advance their interests by cooperating with others and that moral decision-making mechanisms evolved and develop in a Russian doll manner. Uniquely human “new brain” mechanisms that enable us to make moral decisions in rational ways evolved on top of “old brain” mechanisms that induce us (and some other animals) to make moral decisions in more emotional-intuitive ways. Although we tend to become increasingly rational as we develop, we retain the capacity to make moral judgments in primitive ways, and reason is a tool that can be used for good or evil.

Abstract:
The emergence of big data presents opportunities for corporate organisations to exploit massive data collection for strategical decision-making. Despite having access to these data, managers inherently struggle in taking advantages of available information for decision-making. Visualisation offers enhancement on managerial decision-making process via mental cognitive load reduction using visual representation. Albeit the advances of visualisation tools, visualisation for decision-making is rarely explored, leading to a limited understanding of suitable techniques. This book offers knowledge on leveraging information visualisation as a tool in public managerial decision making. In this book, we introduce a framework for supporting software designers in devising visualisation for decision-making support. Our framework encompasses guidelines on requirements and challenges in identifying decision-relevant information and recommended visualisations to represent it. This book discusses the underlying theories, techniques and models of information visualisation and associated with the decision-making process. This book characterizes processes and roles from organisational practices for extracting relevant information within a corporate data warehouse. The chapters within this book cumulatively demonstrate the information visualisation process in supporting organisational decision making. In addition, this book articulates a comprehensive knowledge of Malaysian public service’s decision-making processes and practices. This book highlights emerging opportunities and challenges in using information visualisation in Malaysia for the future undertaking.

Full text
Abstract:
Making Better Choices is about how we make decisions together and the tools we use to get to those decisions. We make joint decisions out of necessity because the choices we make affect each other. Each decision we take has a consequence. This book reinforces why we need better systems design and analyses given the consequences of our decisions. It is also about carefully thinking about the values of the choices we make, whether they occur in a small meeting of individuals in a local association or community or in a national election. It will illuminate the differences between sincere behavior and strategic behavior to defeat an opponent in voting, the latter being quite common. The book will also review different voting systems, what their original intents were, and what their deficits are. In trying to bring all these topics together and more, the authors realized that the book is in essence an outcome of the arranged marriage between social choice and systems engineering that they conducted. The more one begins to explore the aspects of social choice and systems engineering, the more one realizes how much they have in common, and how much more they can offer if they are unified.

Information Systems for Health: Lessons Learned and After-action Review of the Implementation Process in the Caribbean, 2016–2019. Pan American Health Organization, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.37774/9789275123607.

Full text
Abstract:
This publication reviews the work of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) with the countries of the Caribbean subregion and assesses the lessons learned to extend successful strategies and avoid obstacles. It also illustrates the shared achievements of the Caribbean subregion in advancing information systems for health (IS4H) and lights the way ahead on this shared journey. To identify key lessons for the future, this after-action review discusses four questions about the collective work done: What was expected to happen? What really happened? What went well and why? What can be improved and how? In the past four years, PAHO has provided support for IS4H strengthening through actions and strategies in collaboration with countries under the IS4H strategic framework. The IS4H initiative was created with the vision of implementing universal access to health and universal health coverage in the Region through the strengthening of interconnected and interoperable information systems that assure effective and efficient access to quality data, strategic information, and ICT tools for decision-making and well-being. The vision and leadership of the Member States in the Caribbean have contributed to the strengthening of IS4H for the entire Region of the Americas. PAHO remains keenly aware of the importance of strong national and regional information systems for health in reaching the targets of the Sustainable Health Agenda for the Americas 2018–2030.
