Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Technology itself does not currently offer a competitive advantage in this era of technological development. Innovative utilisation and application of technology does, however offer temporary competitive advantages. This innovative utilisation and application of technology is dependant on the creativity and innovation of the entrepreneur. CaliWatch™ makes use of existing technology namely cellular technology, watch technology and medical monitoring technology. The unique application of these technologies gives CaliWatch™competitive advantage in the market. The innovation does not only apply to the technology, but also to strategy and marketing to keep this competitive advantage in the market. This study analyses the different technologies and industries, identifying potential target markets and give projected financial information.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This business plan is a document focussing on creating a business which truly embrace the "New Economy", and by using technology, crafting a strategy which can ensure that the company become successful, and a market leader in the field of civil engineering. The plan focuses on two separate entities. Firstly, building a business by using current techniques in evaluating the industry, developing an initial strategy, and setting the tone for crafting a strategy in the future which will fulfil the goals and objectives of the company, thereby reaching it's initial vision. It use a combination of analysis, creativity, and learning to develop a market leader which has the main focus of being innovative, serving it's clients with service quality, becoming the leader in it's field. A key success factor interaction diagram was developed and combined with an industry value chain to change the operational process into a new market orientated process enabling the company to achieve it's goals. Secondly, the focus is to create wealth for its stakeholders. In that regard the current system in the engineering industry was challenged. New operational processes were developed which is in line with the company vision and mission. These processes was correlated with the financial structure and projections made to ensure that the crafting of the strategy will be done in a systematic way, but always focussing on the goals and objectives of the company. Finally, an implementation plan is developed which is a crucial action plan to ensure success in the future.

Transforming Belmont Estate from a traditional agricultural production business into a profitable agri-tourism enterprise is the issue addressed in this thesis. The importance of this problem rests on the fact that the author is the general manager of this family business and needs to organize it in ways that facilitates its ability to keep growing in a rapidly changing market environment. Given the increasing positioning of Grenada as a preferred tourist destination and the increasing number of people who are responding to this positioning, the management of Belmont Estate believes that transforming this traditional agricultural production business into an agritourism business will create significant value for shareholders and stakeholders. The process of transforming the organization needs to start with a new way of envisioning it. Therefore, a strategic direction and a compelling value proposition were developed. An assessment of the business environment was conducted to develop a framework where specific strategies could be developed to support the new strategic direction that has been established. Additionally, a financial analysis that focused on the contribution of the different enterprises to the new strategic direction was conducted to assess the potential financial outcome of this effort. The results show that Belmont Estate is well-positioned to benefit from increasing tourism business in Grenada. If the management of Belmont Estate can implement the strategic plan, it can successfully transform Belmont Estate from an agricultural production business into an efficient agritourism business that not only creates value for its shareholders and stakeholders but offers a welcome diversity to Grenada’s growing tourism industry.
Holm, Otto Franz. "Developing and implementing a strategic plan for Safety Transport Mirrors." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/51682.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Safety Transport Mirrors is a vehicle component manufacturer. The company is situated in Atlantis on the West Coast of South Africa. It manufactures rear view mirrors for the seven vehicle manufacturers in South Africa. The effect of the weakening Rand, low productivity ratios, the lowering of import duties and active union activities are some of the factors and causes, which decreases the profit margins and in some instances resulted in Safety Transport Mirrors not being competitive in the local market. The company has a vague vision and mission, and the personnel are not always aware of the internal problems that could have been prevented. There is no structured strategic plan that can be followed to ensure that requirements are adhered to. Therefore, crisis management is part of daily management. The opportunity existed to change and improve on the existing ideas and plans, which could improve the effectiveness of the company. This study project is aimed at using analytical tools to analyse the external and internal environment of the industry as well as the company. Using a situation analysis and the information gathered, a strategic plan will be developed, which will indicate the steps to be used to enable Safety Transport Mirrors to become a competitive and effective organisation. Furthermore, an attempt will be made to make a paradigm shift to management to enable them to look into the future with a new vision for Safety Transport Mirrors.
Collins, Bradley. "Crafting and executing an operational strategic plan for a retail product line." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/918.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The following research report is titled “Crafting and executing an operational strategic plan for a retail product line”. The report presents operational analysis which results in creating operational strategy which is relevant to current trading conditions and which is clearly aligned with both the organisation’s group and corporate strategic goals. The primary focus is therefore not on the development of organisational strategy, but on strategic implications, interpretation and operational execution. The central research question is described as follows: How can the current operational strategic planning process be improved in order to deliver strategic plans which are aligned and clearly support the key strategic thrusts at group and corporate level? A literature study was conducted by consulting a vast number of books, articles and websites in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the latest management thinking pertaining to the creation and implementation of strategy. Primary research, which took the form of informal interviews with key personnel, was also conducted in order to ascertain the opinions and insights of individuals who are directly affected by the operational strategic process. The research resulted in a one year operational strategic framework which can be used as a tool by all central buying teams when creating operational strategic plans. The framework allows teams to follow a standardised process which results in concise summary populated with key strategic points. Teams are thus guided by these points and are also prompted to corrective action by ensuring that each strategic action has a measurable outcome. The framework is also populated with group and corporate goals, which act as guiding principles to team members. The final recommendation is that teams allow for a degree of flexibility in the operational strategic actions which were identified in their initial analysis. While key strategic points at group and corporate level will most likely remain unchanged during the course of a financial year, certain operational activities may have to be reconsidered should the micro and macro trading environment change. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die titel van die volgende navorsingverslag is: “Crafting and executing an operational plan for a retail product line”.

Full textThe main intention with this essay is to conduct a study that can be used as a guide for women with high potentials who want to become top managers within the private sector. This study, which has a qualitative approach, investigates reasons behind the fact that there are so few women at the top management positions within the Swedish private sector. The results are then organized in a strategic plan which can be used as an informative tool for the young enthusiastic women. The research was conducted by interviewing four female executives and performance of a small survey answered by both manager and non-manager female employees. After a deep study of the subject, it was decided to base the research on four pillars: Culture, organizations, family and the internal factors. According to the existing theory, these factors are four of the numerous facts that partially contribute to the low ratio of women in the top senior positions. This study proves once again that women’s career is directly influenced by these aspects. The awareness of the preventions that are caused within these four categories can help women plan solutions and avoid making mistakes in their careers. They can consequently experience major developments and get to the top positions of the organizations more than before. The product of this essay is a strategic plan that provides guidelines on how young and motivated women should act in order to achieve career success. This plan covers elements such as: educational level, equality at home, the importance of a supportive boss that gives the right feedback and helps you with professional development, building a contact network, skills to promote yourself within the organizations and the necessity of finding a suitable job. We hope that this essay can assist women in achieving their career goals.

Full textHuman resource management is a widely researched field. However, the research done in terms of small to medium-sized enterprises, is extremely limited, especially in South Africa. The aim of this research was to investigate human resource management practices in one such a company, and to develop a feasible action plan to improve on these practices. The chosen company, Task Applied Science (Pty) Ltd, is a medical research company based in Cape Town, South Africa. The data for the study was obtained through a literature review and interviews. The data from the literature review identified best practices and frameworks. This was combined with interviewing company employees as well as HRM practitioners in the medical field to not only identify problems, but to also suggest possible solutions. These solutions were compiled in a comprehensive action plan. As such, the results offer a workable solution for Task Applied Science, and can serve as example for all small to medium-sized enterprises. The literature review further showed that smaller companies tend to ignore the importance of human resource management due to the time and costs involved and the fact that they are focussed on the external environment rather than the internal. This cannot simply be remedied by implementing practices developed in large companies. Best practices need to be customised to fit the needs of the specific company. The findings showed that only certain human resource management practices were implemented in reaction to crises, or as needs arose. This, combined with the rapid growth and lack of structure, caused a breakdown in communication, transparency, and trust. Staff loyalty decreased because they felt that they were left in the dark. Both the company strategy and values became vague, and thus staff could not be aligned to it. Noteworthy was that the increase in policies and documentation did not cause employees to feel restricted, but rather that it created a feeling of security. The study made it abundantly clear that the human resources department needs to be treated as a strategic partner in the planning and execution of the company strategy; especially in terms of efficient change management. Their role is to communicate the strategic direction, while at the same time acting as an activist for the staff, voicing their needs and capabilities. The proposed action plan focused mainly on the company culture and the alignment of staff with the company’s business strategy. This was done by addressing issues such as company culture, communication, company values, and staff development. The plan offers practical solutions within each of these categories. Furthermore, it suggests solutions in terms of efficient staff recruitment and knowledge management. By implementing this plan the company will be able to increase the synergy between the business units within the company, eradicating silos, and establishing the staff as a competitive advantage. In addition to this, it will establish the human resources department as a credible partner for the staff in developing both their personal and professional lives.

Full textEveryday, systems around the world are invaded by hackers, people fall victim to virus attacks, sensitive data are stolen, and firms find their operations screech to a halt. Information Security is responsible for the protection of the information resources of companies and people. The business continuity plan (BCP), one of the many issues that fall under the label of Information Security, is the object of this study. Previously confined to esoteric research journals, BCP gained significant coverage in the mainstream media in the wake of the attacks on the World Trade Center. The primary goal of a business continuity plan is the avoidance, or substantial reduction, of losses that a firm might suffer as a result of security incidents. Put simply, a BCP's goal is to keep firms operating as normal as possible during a disaster and get the firm back to standard operations as quickly as possible. The purpose of this study is to illustrate the current utilization of business continuity plans in Brazilian businesses and suggest how to make them less vulnerable to internal and external threats, regardless of whether they are old, new, or as yet undiscovered. To achieve this objective, 112 companies were selected and the executives could express their perceptions filling the surveys and through interviews. The research demonstrates that firms are not prepared to face incidents which may cause interruptions of their activities. Finally, the research recommends that companies to evaluate carefully the risks involved in their businesses and what consequences the security incidents may cause. The impacts can certainly justify the investments in Business Continuity Plan.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The real-life problem in strategy communication is generally defined as that strategic plans are not generally well communicated to the workforce and therefore not executed to their full potential. This leads to subordinate problems such as that the strategic plan is not bought into by the employees, which leads to a lack of commitment and involvement. When not well understood, the strategic plan loses its motivational power because employees do not know what their role is. The strategy thus is not likely to have the desired effect on the market. Isolated cases of successful communication and implementation of company strategic plans do exist, which raises the question of what is required from an internal strategy communication plan, and what makes it successful. The research report attempts to answer this question and hence contribute to this knowledge field to benefit future implementers. The literature was reviewed on current approaches to establish criteria for successfully communicating a strategic plan, and a successful communication strategy used at Sishen Iron Ore Mine was documented as a case study and critically analysed. Recommendations for future implementations as well as further research were made. This report identified five main groups of requirements for a successful implementation communication strategy. These areas include the need to engage in two-way dialogue, the need to repeat the message, the need to plan the communication rollout, the important role of the middle manager and the need to show the bigger picture. The methodology is more important than the medium (visual, auditory) used. It is further concluded that, if the skill levels of the workforce differ significantly. it may be necessary to have two or more different communication strategies. Simply delegating the responsibility of communication to subordinates creates the risk of failure. It is recommended that middle managers be trained for this purpose and that the progress in each department be appropriately monitored.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: "The national education leadership is unanimous that our system of education and training has major weaknesses and carries deadly baggage from our past. Large parts of our system are seriously dysfunctional. It will not be an exaggeration to say that there is a crisis at each level of the system" (The Natal Mercury, Tuesday 27 July 1999). The above heart-wrenching statement by Professor Kader Asmal, Minister of Education, echoes the sentiments and concerns of all stakeholders within the KwaZulu-Natal schooling fraternity. This study project proposes that the biggest reason for the present crisis in education in KwaZulu-Natal is that there is no formal, structured and focused strategic management process. The objective of the study project is to craft a strategic plan for the KwaZulu- Natal Department of Education and Culture (hereafter referred to as KZNDEC), thereby providing a catalyst to the department in realising the importance of strategic management, while illustrating the application of the strategic management process in the department. The first part of the study project is intended to set the scene. Chapter 2, firstly, provides an overview of strategic management, and, secondly, discusses the application of strategic management in the public sector. It emphasises that public organisations function in an environment where there is a lesser degree of market exposure and a greater degree of reliance on appropriations from authoritative bodies than with private sector organisations. This significant difference has necessitated two minor adaptations to the model, as designed in chapter 3. The model as proposed by Thompson and Strickland (1996: 4) was adapted to suit the needs of the KZNDEC. The second part of the study project is the practical application of the model, designed in chapter 3, to the KZNDEC. Given the seriousness of the situation, the widespread and complicated "cancerous" problems plaguing the department, and the expectations of stakeholders, chapter 7 proposes that the primary means of achieving its vision, and thereby meeting its new demands and challenges, is to reinvent the department by creating a high-performance organisation. The following strategies are proposed: • The recruitment, into key strategic positions in the department, of a team of high powered business-cultured individuals that are fully empowered and supported by the national and provincial Ministers of education; • The design and implementation of management structures, as proposed in Figure 3.3, to cost-effectively support the core activities of the department; • To create a performance driven culture underpinned by good work ethic and a strong value system; • Develop the professional quality of the teaching force by educators being well trained and thoroughly prepared in organisational, administrative, managerial and research skills in order to run schools like successful businesses; • Develop administrative competence that fully supports the core activities through rationalisation of the administrative functions at "centres of excellence" to overcome scarce skills and budgetary constraints; • The building of capacity through focused and intensive training and developmental programmes; • To restrict personnel costs to at most 85% oftotal costs; • Address the inequity in education provision through the implementation of the norms and minimum standards for the funding of public schools; • Fostering public-private partnerships with International Donor Agencies to assist by way of financial aid, skills transfer, and training and development; • Improve the public image of the department; and • A commitment to the concept of Ubuntu with emphasis on caring. The end result of the study project is a clearly defined, thorough and well thought-out strategic plan for the KZNDEC, which could be of immense benefit in assisting the department to compile their own strategy. There are a few thought-provoking strategies that are sensitive and radical, as good strategy should be.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: A sound strategic approach to the management of the Mine Technical Services (MTS) department at Styldrift is critical. There are numerous areas of influence that play a role in the success or failure of the department. All these influences have an impact on each other and these influences need to be carefully understood. Within the MTS department there are also several subdepartments that have to be staffed, equipped and managed very well in order to get the best interdependent relationship between departments as possible. It is only through this interdependent relationship that the department can function complementarily and excel in achieving its strategic goals. Mineral resources at a mine are managed through the services from the mine technical team. There are few strategic documents in the mineral resource management (MRM) field that provide a guideline to set up a department successfully. Departments throughout the country operate on different levels with different standards without the knowledge shared from the one section to the next. For the purpose of this assignment, some of the ground principles were investigated and documented to create a link between departments, mines and companies to enable the move towards operational excellence within the MTS. Through the application of relevant literature, research was conducted on the industry to determine best practices. The industry best practices are discussed and referenced to Styldrift Specific. The strategy and management philosophy were evaluated and are highlighted in this assignment. With the literature firmly understood and the required direction from the company placed in perspective, the strategy for the MTS department could be crafted to an extent that it can be executed. Each department was broken down to manageable elements to understand the functioning of the department. The fundamental OR requirements were evaluated and are stipulated in this paper. The MTS department was then dissected through the available theory to guide the process of crafting and executing the departmental strategy. The journey through to operational excellence and the fundamental guideline of crafting and executing a strategic plan for an MTS department to manage mineral resources become clearer as the chapters of the assignment are completed. The end goal of the project was to have a document that can guide staffing, equipping and management of the MTS department at Styldrift in order to ensure success for the project, mine and surrounding communities.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: It is normally very difficult for an entrepreneur to start a new business. One of the most difficult things is to raise capital from financial institutions or venture capitalists. This mini study project shows the importance of a well thought-through business plan. The business plan not only concentrates on the positives, but will also indicate the risks involved. This will show financial institutions that the entrepreneur is serious about his idea and positive about its chances for success. In the business plan a lot of emphasis are put on the importance of a successful marketing plan. The marketing plan will determine the success of a new business. It is however very important not to loose site of the importance of a very thorough financial and economic review. There will always be risks involved in starting a new business. Entrepreneurship is all about risk-taking by individuals willing to pioneer new paradigms. A successful business plan will however remove some of the risk and make it more attractive to financial institutions.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Dit is normaalweg baie moeilik vir 'n entrepreneur on 'n nuwe besigheid te begin.
