Abstract:

Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/3543.

Abstract:

Ciszek, Erica. "Identity, Culture, and Articulation: A Critical-Cultural Analysis of Strategic LGBT Advocacy Outreach." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/18364.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines how LGBT activists and LGBT youth make meaning of a strategic advocacy campaign. By examining activist and advocacy efforts aimed at youth, this research brings to light how LGBT organizations use campaigns to articulate identity and, conversely, how LGBT youth articulate notions of identity. Through the lens of the It Gets Better Project, a nonprofit activist organization, this dissertation uses in-depth interviews with organizational members and chat-based interviews with LGBT youth to study the meanings participants brought to the campaign. Strategic communication has been instrumental in construction of LGBT as a cohesive collective identity and has played a vital role in the early stages of the gay rights movement. This research demonstrates how contemporary LGBT advocacy, through strategic communication, works to shape understandings of LGBT youth. Instead of focusing on the Internet as a democratic space that equalizes power differentials between an organization and its publics, this study shows that the construction of identity is the result of a dynamic process between producers and consumers in which power is localized and does not simply belong to an organization or its public. This research challenges the Internet as a democratic space and demonstrates that identity is a discursive struggle over meaning that is bound up in the intimate dance between producers and consumers of a campaign. In contrast to functionalist understandings of public relations that privileges the organization, this dissertation contends that a cultural-economic approach focuses on the processes of communication. A cultural-economic approach gives voice to the diverse audiences of a communication campaign and addresses the role communication plays as a discursive force that influences the construction of identities.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the causal relationship between the U.S. military's strategic culture and its Army doctrine FM 1 (Field Manual 1). The aim is to demonstrate the degree to which the military strategic culture influenced the development of the doctrine and whether this element can be said to constitute a natural basis for a doctrine context. The paper explains the significance of strategic culture, in particular from Colin S. Gray's theory. This theory is later used as the essay theory approach. Based on the theory, indicators will be created and used for a qualitative text analysis, in order to determine the degree of correlation between strategic culture and the doctrine. Study findings show that U.S. Army doctrine only has a certain degree of compliance with its military strategic culture and that this in particular depends on the army’s very high rate of adaptation to current threats, after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11th 2001.

Abstract:
The urban marketing and strategic planning have been used in a dynamic which the production consumption and profit are expected aspects in result of the actions of public power. The urban promotion re-creates new images to be sold in the global market, while promote spatial rearrangements in order to adjust them to the new local needs. The use of culture as a tool of strategic planning and urban marketing, using cultural icons buildings to leverage urban promotion and renew processes in different parts of the world. This thesis analyse the construction of Cidade da Música/Artes cultural complex in Rio de Janeiro, based on the hypothesis that although such insertion follows strategic dictates of urban promotion, it did not result in substantial transformations to the region and did not reach recommended targets for this model planning.

Paynter, Felicity. "Suburbs, culture and regeneration : cultural strategies in three English suburban boroughs." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2010. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/513.

Abstract:
This research explores why and how suburban local authorities are attempting to invigorate their cultural provision for economic, environmental and social ends by investigating how culture is used in suburban places as part of regeneration. In response to the perceived neglect and degradation of England’s suburbs and the ongoing significance of cultural regeneration strategies, this thesis examines the contemporary conceptualisation of suburban development at the national scale and considers three case study areas - Bury, Croydon and Sandwell - in terms of their cultural development and regeneration at the local authority scale. I argue that the national scale policy-contributing discussion employs many urban regeneration discourses when considering the future development of suburbs, while also reinforcing rather than unsettling many suburban stereotypes. From my analysis of suburban local authority cultural policies, development practices and resulting cultural venues and spaces, I conclude that the mobilisation of culture for suburban regeneration has similar characteristics, aims and assumptions to strategies in urban areas. Each of the case study areas demonstrates different plans and expectations for cultural development, with a range of resulting practices, challenges and outcomes. This thesis concludes that place-specific cultural development and regeneration approaches that avoid replicating urban regeneration rhetoric and practice should be a focus for future suburban development.

Abstract:
This thesis brings together theories from multiple disciplines in order to investigate the role of design and cultural events in city branding and urban regeneration, through a specific focus on the case study of the Gwangju Biennale in South Korea. This research responds to developing trends: spurred by globalisation, cities are becoming increasingly competitive, as policymakers seek new ways to develop a distinct identity (brand image) in order to boost tourism, as well as economic vitality and urban regeneration . This thesis argues that design, as a creative problem-solving process, plays a broad and important role in the creation of these city-based cultural events, informing management and leadership decisions as well as shaping the promotion and imagery of the event. Furthermore, this thesis attempts to investigate the extent to which cultural events can be determined to have a direct affect on the perception of a city's brand and its drive towards social, economic, environmental and cultural regeneration . Through one major case study (based on extensive fieldwork experience) and four minor case studies of city and place-based cultural events taking place in the UK and South Korea, this thesis compares and contrasts the varying approaches and outcomes on a .global scale, concluding with a series of observations and recommendations that suggest a new way to understand how these events can use design in order to achieve their potential for truly transformative change.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis is the translation strategies used to translate culture specific items in the Lithuanian and English versions of Peter Mayle’s book A Year in Provence. Peter Mayle (b. 1939) is a famous British author, known for his educational books for children and travel writing. A Year in Provence is a book about a British couple who decides to settle in a small village of Ménerbes in France. New people and places offer many adventures while trying to know better the French culture and cuisine. The Lithuanian translation of the book was done by the translator Ina Jakaitė (2008). At first, this thesis analyses the concept of cultural adaptation and explanations of the concept of the culture itself. Translation strategies for culture specific items (CSIs) are also discussed in the present paper. Furthermore, some methods of the translation by different scholars are introduced. Translation strategies for culture specific items in the paper are proposed and discussed according to the approach discussed by the famous scholar Eirlys E. Davies. Translation strategies (preservation, addition, omission, globalization, localization, transformation and creation) are used in analyzing and discussing the translation of proper nouns and food items in the book A Year in Provence. The section of proper names is divided into two categories: proper names ( the first names and surnames) and geographical names (names of cities, names of towns, names of streets, names of cafés and... Abstract:

Can the lack of functional cross-cultural communication among individuals within an international organization be the reason for cultural clashes to occur, and lead to conflict between two cultures within the same organization?

Our aim is to try to create a potential model of how cross-cultural problems can be studied, in order to contribute to the solution of the problem. And to examine whether the theories, which form the basis of our model can be applied in reality.

The research have assumed from the hermeneutical approach for a holistic view of the problem area. The deductive approach has been used in order to distinguish whether the theories can be applied to reality, and qualitative research method for collecting data.

The focus lies within cross-cultural communications, which defines the various cultural factors that can affect organizational culture. Hofstede dimensions and the social structure are mentioned and cultural factors as language and religion. The piece includes the national and organizational culture theory and the establishment strategies. Subsequently the culture clashes, the international business relations and conflict resolution.

Our conclusion is that culture clashes occur and the further away from our own values, attitudes and norms, we get, the more tolerant we relate to other cultures. We note that organizational culture is influenced by individuals which constitutes in it and the theory and reality may not always correspond. That culture is a complexity to study, where tolerance, acceptance and understanding are the most important tools for cross-cultural communication.

Abstract:

In this essay I want to investigate the internal communication of an transcultural company to see how different cultures are shown in different styles of negotiation. I have been looking at sixteen emails between a German businessman and a Swedish businessman, both working at the transcultural company Volkswagen.

The essay’s research questions are: 1. Do the German and the Swede differ when it comes to manner of speaking, and if so, how does that effect the negotiation?  2. Which styles do they use in negotiation? What kind of consequences do the styles cause? 3. Would carefully prepared rhetorical strategies make the negotiation more effective, and in that case, which strategies would that be?

To answer these questions I have made a stylistic and a structural analysis, followed by an analysis of the negotiation style and strategies. At last I studied the two cultures and made a comparison between them. I have built my essay on the theory of cultural dimensions by Hofstede and Ghauri’s idea about the phases of negotiation, to mention a few.

Conclusions I’ve made are that there are bigger differences between Germans and Swedes then I expected. I’ve also seen that education in negotiation could be profitable for transcultural companies, which I with this essay would like to convey.

Salash, Malvina. "Differences in Perceived Stress and Coping Strategies Between Ukrainian and US College Students." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3720.

Abstract:
Social support is associated with mental and physical health. It is important to consider culture in order to understand stress responses to everyday hassles and use of coping strategies. The current investigation hypothesized that (1) Ukrainian college students representative of a collectivistic culture would have lower levels of perceived stress than would US college students representative of a highly individualized culture, (2) Ukrainian college students would have evidence of greater social support compared to US college students, and (3) social support would mitigate differences in perceived stress between the two cultures. Based on 61 US participants recruited from Brigham Young University and 100 Ukrainian participants recruited from Sumy State University in Ukraine and using linear regression to predict college students perceived stress level from culture and MANOVA to investigate the differences in social support between two cultures, American and Ukrainian respondents scored similarly on measure of perceived stress. Moreover, American respondents reported using more social support for coping with stress than did Ukrainian respondents. These results challenge the hypothesis that collectivistic cultures use more coping strategies based on social support than do individualistic cultures and suggest that certain groups within an individualistic culture may cope with stress with social support.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to analyze the different solutions used when translating cultural references. The source text is an extract from The Omnivore’s Dilemma. A Natural History of Four Meals (2006), written by Michael Pollan, and the material that this study is based on is taken from that text, as well as from my translation of that extract. The theme of the book is American food culture from various perspectives, which results in a culturally specific text. The cultural references in this study regard phenomena such as food-related items, geographical places and names, etc. In the translation of these cultural references, I used a combination of methods. The strategies used were Ingo’s complementary addition, Vinay and Darbelnet’s equivalence and adaptation, as well as Newmark’s transference. The analysis of the translation showed that the most used strategy was transference, which was expected considering that the purpose of the text is to present American food culture and the ambition and aim of the translation was to keep as many cultural references as possible in the target text. One conclusion that could be drawn from the study was that the purpose of the text and the intended TT reader are main factors when deciding how to translate cultural references.

Abstract:
Today’s business world is facing a continual increase of globalization that opened the borders of nations. Organizations see in multicultural teams and cultural diversity a way to respond to this phenomenon. Cultural diversity in multicultural teams is a new challenge for leaders. Indeed, they need to develop new strategies and skills to include individuals coming from different cultures in order to ensure the proper functioning of the team and achieve effectiveness. The purpose of our thesis – labeled “Leading Cultural Diversity: Strategies and Skills” – is to find out, through interviews and conversations with actual leaders, which strategies and skills are necessary in global organizations. The findings might be applied in other fields where cultural diversity plays an important role.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the American approach to war and strategy within the context of a theoretical framework consisting of two parts: Clausewitzian theory and strategic cultural theory. The introductory chapter serves as the literature review and lays the foundation for the whole of the study. Chapter Two establishes the theoretical framework. Chapter Three exphcates what is commonly referred to as the "American way of war," and traces the roots of the Network-Centric Warfare (NCW)/Effects-Based Operations (EBO) construct. Chapter Four analyses the American strategic approach within the context of strategic cultural theory and finds that America's strategic behaviour is a product of her "culture of technology." The fifth chapter analyses the NCW/EBO construct within the context of Clausewitzian theory and finds that America's strategic paradigm is inconsistent with Clausewitz's teachings. Chapter Six provides a vignette to support earlier contentions. Chapter Seven summarises the Study, re-states preliminary findings, and offers some general conclusions about the American strategic approach.

Abstract:
Corporate support has become increasingly important to guarantee long-term viability in museums and cultural organizations. The topic is presented at different levels, from the simplest forms of donations to long-term agreements of partnerships between organisations and private firms. First, this paper will present a model framework of Italian cultural entities, describing the progressive transformation of their funding system from a preeminently public-dominated to a more mixed one, with particular reference to the competitive advantage and benefits arising from successful partnerships both for cultural and economic organisations. To investigate the phenomenon, a qualitative, explorative approach has been chosen, focusing on the case study of Fondazione Brescia Musei. In 2020, following up to its latest management model, the Foundation has launched Alleanza per la Cultura, a public-private non-competitive long-term agreement that has been signed by nearly 40 local corporate firms to boost the promotion and the conservation of the Foundation’s cultural heritage. Taking into consideration the internal characteristics of the organisations and the environment in which they act, this research will identify the efficacy of the project, arguing the positive long-term effects of similar partnership models in bringing a positive impact for all parties.

Johnston, Kim Amanda. "The influence of cultural selection on strategic communication." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2011. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/46264/1/Kim_Johnston_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Strategic communication is held to be a key process by which organisations respond to environmental uncertainty. In the received view articulated in the literatures of organisational communication and public relations, strategic communication results from collaborative efforts by organisational members to create shared understanding about environmental uncertainty and, as a result of this collective understanding, formulate appropriate communication responses. In this study, I explore how such collaborative efforts towards the development of strategic communication are derived from, and bounded by, culturally shared values and assumptions. Study of the influences of an organisation‟s culture on the formulation of strategic communication is a fundamental conceptual challenge for public relations and, to date, a largely unaddressed area of research. This thesis responds to this challenge by describing a key property of organisational culture – the action of cultural selection (Durham, 1992). I integrate this property of cultural selection to extend and refine the descriptive range of Weick‟s (1969, 1979) classic sociocultural model of organizing. From this integration I propose a new model, the Cultural Selection of Strategic Communication (CSSC). Underpinning the CSSC model is the central proposition that because of the action of cultural selection during organizing processes, the inherently conservative properties of an organisation‟s culture constrain development of effective strategic communication in ways that may be unrelated to the outcomes of “environmental scanning” and other monitoring functions heralded by the public relations literature as central to organisational adaptation. Thus, by examining the development of strategic communication, I describe a central conservative influence on the social ecology of organisations. This research also responds to Butschi and Steyn‟s (2006) call for the development of theory focusing on strategic communication as well as Grunig (2006) and Sriramesh‟s (2007) call for research to further understand the role of culture in public relations practice. In keeping with the explorative and descriptive goals of this study, I employ organisational ethnography to examine the influence of cultural selection on the development of strategic communication. In this methodological approach, I use the technique of progressive contextualisation to compare data from two related but distinct cultural settings. This approach provides a range of descriptive opportunities to permit a deeper understanding of the work of cultural selection. Findings of this study propose that culture, operating as a system of shared and socially transmitted social knowledge, acts through the property of cultural selection to influence decision making, and decrease conceptual variation within a group. The findings support the view that strategic communication, as a cultural product derived from the influence of cultural selection, is an essential feature to understand the social ecology of an organisation.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the cultural education programs that have been developed over the past two decades by Canada's First Peoples. These programs are designed to strengthen and maintain indigenous cultures by promoting cultural identity and by developing cultural curriculum materials for a broad range of education programs. This thesis gives particular emphasis to cultural education centres and their unique integration of a characteristic set of programs which have been designed to systematically collect, preserve and communicate indigenous cultural knowledge. Despite the effects of more than a century of colonization, and against all expectation. Native cultures have persisted. Native people are now actively communicating a renewed confidence in their own cultures, their values and their ways of doing things. Community-based self-government and the maintenance of a land base are ideologically inseparable from the retention of culture and language, and Native people today view these as integral to their survival and self-determination as distinct peoples within the fabric of the majority society. Cultural education programs and centres perform a significant communication function in the agenda of self-determination by both ensuring and affirming the continuing viability of Native cultures. This thesis explores the ideology of cultural survival and examines its current expression as a program of action directed at the damaging effects of cultural disruption. The background to the emergence of cultural goals is discussed, with reference to their central place in the socio-economic development strategies and education policies developed by Native organizations in the 1970's. A variety of cultural education programs are described with a specific focus on two cultural education centres in British Columbia. Cultural education programs, as they are defined and carried out by various Native agencies, are presented as significant innovations in the definition and management, overall, of cultural heritage. The organizational integration of these programs also represents a significant innovation in the area of community development. In this context, museological themes are explored. Native concepts of culture are contrasted to non-Native concepts of heritage, with particular attention given to some of the problems in the way non-Native museums have traditionally represented Native cultures.

Kaushal, Sidharth. "Reconceptualising strategic culture as a focal point : the impact of strategic culture on a nation's grand strategy." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2018. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3841/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes to remedy some of the theoretical lacunae surrounding the topic of strategic culture by reconceptualising it in a way that is compatible with existing expected utility models of executive choice. Current theorising regarding strategic culture has been paralysed by an ongoing debate between the first and third generations of strategic culture theorists and by the persistent inability of scholars to provide a predictive framework based on the concept - meaning that it is unable to operate as anything other than a residual variable. The hypothesis of this thesis is that conceptualising strategic culture using Thomas Schelling's concept of a focal point permits us to sidestep some of the theoretical debates that have divided rationalists and theorists of strategic culture by allowing culture to be grafted on to a rational actor model of executive choice in a way that is progressive rather than degenerative. In order to test this theory, the thesis develops and subsequently tests the idea of a liberal strategic culture, utilising both the congruence method and within case process tracing to demonstrate the external validity of the theory being developed. The cases chosen span American administrations from the Cold War to the contemporary era and demonstrate the utility of a re conceptualised model of strategic culture across a range of geopolitical and domestic contexts.

The analysis of institutions is a subject widely researched in the health-care area. The organizational dynamics of its services is studied with a view to understand its implications for the care process. In this context, the culture of organizations is understood as a symbolic possibility contained in a greater dimension called “national culture”. Though it does not determine the values produced in the ambit of the organization, it shall “establish” the limits of their variations. This premise justifies the incorporation of a socio-anthropological approach into the studies of organizational culture. In this perspective, this study had the purpose of discovering the perceptions of workers in two basic health-care services belonging to the municipality of Niterói/RJ and of the meaning of friendship and kinship relations, as well as the strategies of social navigation usually employed — founded on the theoretical perspective developed by Roberto DaMatta. According to this author, Brazil is a relational society resulting from the coexistence of values associated with the definitions of “individual” and “person”. Both correspond to the ideological constructions that guide some opposed but complementary ways of being, living and thinking. This conflicting relation demands the mobilization of social navigation strategies and among them the “jeitinho brasileiro” in order to cross over the values of the individual and the person. Using the qualitative approach 15 interviews were carried out divided between workers from a traditional health-care unit and from a service belonging to Programa Médico de Família de Niterói (PMFN). In subsidiary fashion, field observations made possible the contextualization of that social reality, complementing information arising from the talks. The selection of the workers was made through indications from each informant, enabling a sketch of social networks apparently constituted within both services. The results evinced the relational character associated with the Brazilian stereotype. The manifestation of this cultural trait in different contexts materializes conflicts resulting from the coexistence of values based on the “individual” and the “person”. Among them, we can highlight the distortions observed between discourse and practice, as well as the mobilization of social navigation strategies — among them the “jeitinho brasileiro” — with a view to establishing a mediation between impersonal law and person. It is also necessary to emphasize that PMFN services’ organizational form apparently imposes on its workers the concrete challenge of equating the egalitarian principle that founds SUS, with values set on which are based personal relations in Brazilian society.

Abstract:
The relationship between a country's political decision-making and top military leadership is central, but also debated. Not least whether the military side should take political life into account and to what extent one should become a part of it. This essay aims to increase the understanding of the challenges of the military-political relationship, focusing on the borderland between peace and war that is usually described as a gray zone. Through scenario-based interviews with senior officials and politicians within the Swedish government and government office, it is investigated what impact a gray zone problem can have on the military advice provided. By combining a future scenario with interviews, an empirical material unique to the research field is created. The results show that the gray zone affects the strategic decision-making process, but not really by adding any completely new challenges, but mainly by strengthening and partly developing existing ones. The logic of peace, rather than war, on strategy should therefore form the basis for how the gray zone is viewed from a decision-making process perspective. The gray zone's character of ambiguity creates and reinforces tensions between different actors in the strategy process, which in turn risks delaying strategic decisions. The ambiguities arise mainly in three areas: the view of the strategic problem, the political consequences and the organization that will deal with the gray zone. Some of the ambiguities are amplified by the opponent, while others are more the result of internal factors. In order to reduce the negative effects of the gray zone problem, a much closer integration between the military and politics is proposed than in peacetime: policy-making must take place jointly and traditional boundaries need to be redrawn. The key is spelled relationships and these must be created and maintained in good time before the gray zone enters.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Although there has been a growing interest in policy and among scholars to consider culture as an aspect of sustainable development, the understanding of culture within the framework of sustainable development has remained vague. This study sought to discover what influence culture may have on the practical application of the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD). The research focused on the approaches FSSD practitioners take in their application of the framework within different cultural contexts in an attempt both to uncover patterns and to develop guidelines for applying the framework in those contexts with cultural sensitivity. A qualitative research approach was selected, and a literature review and semi-structured interviews were used to elicit the approaches of thirteen FSSD practitioners with experience applying the framework outside of Europe and North America. The results revealed four main cultural factors FSSD practitioners account for when applying the framework in different cultural contexts and four practical strategies used to account for those cultural factors. Based on these discoveries, strategic guidelines were created to complement the FSSD so that it can be more easily applied in different cultural contexts, thereby contributing to the framework’s ultimate goal of accelerating the global transition toward a sustainable society.

Abstract:
Despite a growing literature on transnational couples, little is known about the challenges they face. The aim of this paper is to study these challenges and to identify coping strategies. In order to understand these issues, qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven couples. Responders consisted of partners from different cultural backgrounds and were either married or in a romantic relationship. The paper looked at the cultural changes that lead up to the acceptance and growth in transnational relationships. Furthermore, the study examined how these changes have affected and are still affecting the individual couples. Through the interviews, the research looked at the interpersonal dynamics to identify the role of culture within the relationships. Culture, it was found, still plays a great role in the day-to-day life of the transnational couples, in spite of the shift from traditional to more liberal values identified in the study. The challenges faced by the couples were very different from each other as the study represented couples from different backgrounds together with their partner, a native Swede. However, a common issue among the couples was communication breakdowns and a lack of understanding of the partner’s background.

Oliveira, Carlos Alberto Arruda de. "Societal culture and managerial decision making : the Brazilians and the English : an international comparison of the making and implementing of strategic decisions in organizations." Thesis, University of Bradford, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/4373.

Full text
Abstract:
Many features of the making of major managerial decisions have been covered by research - complexity, politicality, innovations, and so forth. Yet one - to which all others may be subject - remains almost untouched by research. It is the effects of societal culture on the way managers from different nations make, and implement, such decisions. This study compares the effects of a New World Latin dominated culture with those of an Old World Anglo-Saxon dominated culture, namely in Brazil and England respectively. It arises from the proposition that decision making, as well as other managerial practices, must be shaped by the cultures of the societies of which senior executives are part, in ways of which they themselves may be unaware. Methodologically, in response to the criticisms of earlier research which often attributed managerial and organizational differences to culture without direct evidence for that, this study began by composing portrayals of both cultures. The purpose of the portraits was to enable predictions of culturally affected elements in decision making, prior to empirical investigation. Data was collected by interview on twenty Brazilian and twenty English decisions in sixteen Brazilian and seventeen English organizations, ranging through a variety of manufacturing and service industries as well as universities. The examination of the results confirmed most of the predicted cultural characteristics. Differences although small on each variable were remarkably consistent across all variables. Brazilian strategic decision making was found to be dominated by a clique around the chief executive, who make fast decisions in a process strongly based on the social relationships between the participants. This style of decision making leads, in Brazil, to very informal processes, with little or no delays and, relatively speaking, less search for information. English decisions were found to be more consultative with more interests being involved in different stages of the process. Decisions in this country were characterized by caution and conservatism with some tendency to postpone decisions. Methodologically, the value of the prior conceptualization and description of societal culture is demonstrated since this gives meaning to the extensive differences found in all aspects of decision making. Theoretically, an attempt is made to elucidate the interconnectedness of societal culture and managerial behaviour.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose: This dissertation aims to explore artistic representation investments by property developers. The report aims to analyse how property developers formulate their strategies and how they invest in artistic representation. In addition the report investigates which elements affect their decision to work with artistic representation. These are the research questions that formed the basis for the investigation. Frame of reference: The study is done in the light of theories about how different values can be generated based on cultural expressions along with theories about strategies, investment and decision making. Method: One municipality and three property developers with ongoing construction projects have been the object for this study. Data were collected through interviews and participation in seminars and through secondary data such as reports and policy documents. Conclusion: The study concludes that there is a disagreement between how municipalities and property developers view art. The results show that the property developers do not use capital budgeting as funding for artistic creation. A common finding for all the companies is that they include the artistic interpretation in the overall budget estimate. It was also discovered that the developers themselves believe that they do not have a conscious strategy. However, in the survey, three common factors were identified that are crucial for whether the property developers include artistic representation in their construction projects: financing, the clients requests and the demands of the municipalities. Finally, the results also suggest that property developers do not take into account other values that art and culture can generate.
