Abstract:
The present study has taken as leading text the Sigmund Freud s essay, written in 1919, titled The stranger. The research analyzed it, investigating about the viability of coming strange in this contemporary period. For doing so, it was used an approach according to what was suggested by Freud, and another one more in line with the point of view of Jentsch, mentioned by the author, who approximates the strangeness phenomenon to the intellectual uncertainly. From the stand point of the interpretation bias refered to the uncertainly, the sensation of strangeness was directed to applied to the esthetics, taken as the quality of feeling. This direction has facilitated the proximity of the analysis to the clinics of Sándor Ferenczi and Donald Winnicott. The contribution of these analysts, showing us how the stranger can be received, is opposite to the usual attempt of elimination of the otherness, of what can be seen as the other. Beyond the clinic, in the debate about how this phenomenon is perceived nowadays, and about the possibility of its occurrence, causing movement, we have also researched, based on some contemporary cartography s, made by researches of Psychoanalysis, as other areas too, like Sociology and Philosophy.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a study of the subassistant commissioners of the Freedmen's Bureau in Texas from late 1865 to late 1868. Its focus is two-fold. It first examines who these men were. Were they northern born or southern? Did they own slaves? Were these men rich, poor, or from the middle-class? Did they have military experience or were they civilians? How old was the average subassistant commissioner in Texas? This work will answer what man Freedmen's Bureau officials deemed qualified to transition the former slave from bondage to freedom. Secondly, in conjunction with these questions, this work will examine the day-to-day operations of the Bureau agents in Texas, chronicling those aspects endemic to all agents as well as those unique to certain subdistricts. The demand of being a Bureau agent was immense, requiring long hours in the office fielding questions and long hours in the saddle inspecting subdistricts. In essence, their work advising, protecting, and educating the freedmen was a never ending one. The records of the Freedmen's Bureau, both the records for headquarters and the subassistant commissioners, serve as the main sources, but numerous newspapers, Texas state official correspondences, and military records proved helpful. Immense amounts of information arrived at Bureau headquarters from field personnel. This work relies heavily on reports and letters in the Bureau agents' own words. This dissertation follows a chronological approach, following the various Bureau administrations in Texas. I believe this approach allows the reader to better glimpse events as they happened.

Abstract:
Before World War II, many Jewish communities began to worry for their children's safety. As a result, families and Jewish communities in Britain and Nazi- Occupied countries worked together to send their children to safety. Around 10,000 Jewish refugee children went to Great Britain on the Kindertransport transportations from Czechoslovakia, Austria, and Germany. These children came from many different nationalities and economic backgrounds and went to many different types of foster homes. Some of these children ended up with Jewish foster families while many ended up with Christian foster families. Same came from religious backgrounds and some came from non-religious backgrounds. While researchers in the past examined the impact of their religion on their adjustment as refugees, not many researched how life as a refugee and a foster child impacted their relationship with religion. To understand the lives of these children fully, historians must examine all parts, including their religious and cultural identities. Considering Nazis persecuted these children and their families for their religious and cultural identities, researchers must examine this to when studying these children and their experiences. When telling their stories, historians must include everything, especially the parts Nazis determined to end. How did they develop their religious and cultural identities considering everything happening in the world around them? How did British Christian culture affect their identity transformation? How did Nazi persecution influence their ideas about their Jewish identity, religion, and culture? The study examined this using a content analysis of 15 oral histories, a memoir, and the documentary film Into the Arms of Strangers. Each child's different life experiences impacted their different identities. This study was not meant to be generalized to the larger public and only meant to be the beginning of a larger study of other Kindertransport children. This particular study only focused on the specific experiences of those studied.

Stoyanov, Stoyan Petrov. "Strangers in a strange land : strategy development for diminishing liabilities of newness and foreignness in transnational entrepreneurial companies." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/17951.

Full text
Abstract:
Entrepreneurial migration has become increasingly common as a result of globalization and regional economic integration, and the economic contribution of immigrant entrepreneurs is increasingly appreciated. Many of these immigrant entrepreneurs become transnational entrepreneurs (TEs), in that their business activities link the markets of their home countries and their new host countries. Entrepreneurship, International Entrepreneurship and Internationalization Process research has emphasized the role of networks and of social capital for entrepreneurs for addressing the liabilities of foreignness or of outsidership when they address new markets. Research has not, however, addressed the role of networks for TEs, nor the role of networks in their strategies. This thesis asks how participation in Diaspora networks helps transnational entrepreneurs diminish liabilities of newness and foreignness, and how transnational entrepreneurs successfully realize and manage business embeddedness at an interorganizational level. A qualitative study is undertaken with 12 Bulgarian-owned service-consulting companies in London. Data came from semi-structured interviews of the entrepreneurs involved and their employees, which was combined with participant observations and oral life story narratives. Three overall contributions are developed from the findings of the study. First, the study makes a theoretical contribution to the field, by introducing the ‘resource orchestration’ framework in the study of entrepreneurs’ capabilities and resource configurations. Modifying this framework with the inclusion of a time dimension adapts it to the dynamism of process research. This helps the study to show how TEs typically undergo a sequence of processes in which they leverage their Diaspora networks in order to access, acquire, and adapt knowledge and capabilities. It is these processes that allow them to reduce the liabilities of foreignness that they face, and embed themselves in their new local environments. Second, the study illuminates heretofore unexplored processes of TE integration that reduce their liabilities of newness and foreignness and help to align with their new foreign country market environment. This involves preparation, paradigm shift, and initiation stages, each one being facilitated by embeddedness within a Diaspora community. It is through these integration processes that entrepreneurial resource orchestration is achieved, and the synchronization of resource structuring and bundling processes. Third, the findings challenge an assumption often encountered in entrepreneurial and international entrepreneurial network and social capital research that the co-existence of strong ties and bridging ties – referred to by Burt (1992) as an ideal configuration – is exceedingly rare. This study finds evidence of their frequent co-existence in the Diaspora network, and shows this configuration to underpin the operation and growth of the network. It shows how TEs have a particular opportunity to access, orchestrate and employ this valuable form of social capital, and doing this in the ways shown not only enables their own entrepreneurial success, but also their economic contribution to their host communities.

Abstract:

This dissertation examines the theme of strangeness in Arabic and Latin American literature between 1880 and 1920. Through analytical readings of novels and other prose fiction of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, I show the salience of strangeness, alienation and estrangement as motifs in these works. In the first chapter of the dissertation, I examine earlier works of prose to provide context. In the second chapter, I focus on strangeness as manifested through sexual transgression. Finally, in the last chapter, I analyze narratives of physical estrangement, such as travel, urban alienation, and disconnect from nature.

In analyzing strangeness, I show its close relationship with modernity. Indeed, alienation is a hallmark of modernity, rising from a disconnect with one’s society and physical environment. Alienation and estrangement are also metaphorical ways of addressing the relationship with the Other, especially if that Other is a colonizer or ex-colonizer. Strangeness is therefore expressive of problematics of national identity, at a time of budding decolonization and post-colonial nation-building.

Finally, this dissertation shows how the early prose literature of the turn of the twentieth century, in Latin America and in the Arab world, has expressed essential anxieties of modernity, and set the course for the canonical works of the later twentieth century.

Abstract:
The aesthetic of emptiness in photography is as old as the medium itself. Its origin goes back to the early days of the technique, which, aimed at obtaining an exact representation of nature, was confronted with the resistive forces of reality. Unbeknownst to all, this aesthetic emerged from a tension between the act of the inventor, the creator, who wishes to accomplish his project - to force "nature" to his design - and the real that resists and hinders attempts. All "primitive" photography is plastically marked by this tension between antagonistic forces. The illusion, so much desired, of a faithful representation fainted, leaving to posterity the beauty of these unique images, opening space to possibilities. The dark, troubled and empty areas actively participated in endowing these photographs with an aura, plunging viewers into contemplations and endless reveries. The phenomenality of the world has marked with his seal the photographic aesthetics, paradoxically transforming technicist projects, loving precision, in singular and strange plastic adventures. This great gap between the desire for apprehension and the resistance of reality has produced effects, tangible traces of strangeness of the world. The maturity of the medium and its actors helping, there was, then, only a step to cross to coincide these traces and philosophical questions that result. The emptiness, a major element of this aesthetic, was appropriately used as a strategy in the service of the feeling of the sublime. To stage these issues, we convene together the history of the photographic medium and most famous actors. This will serve as a clue to glance to the two centuries that separate us from the invention of photography and see how, in the history of the medium, photographers have reactivated this aesthetic. This thesis proposes, through rich historical, technical and theoretical analyzes, to evaluate the resonances of the vacuum aesthetic in photography, which consists in emptying the representative space rather than filling it. Through case studies, reasoned practice of shooting in support, we will also try to demonstrate how photography has become, over time, a privileged medium of contemplation, observation, critical examination of spaces left vacant within the urban fabric and how the dialectic between real places and photographic representations allows, in return, a reflection on the landscape issues of our urban spaces

Abstract:
The knife is a major character in my work. Sections of paper, cut, painted, and bound together form shallow reliefs. In recontextualizing quotidian objects such as fruit, plants, curtains, and shrimp cocktails, they are reconfigured, their original functions replaced with those of physical pleasure and perversion. Caught in private moments of leisure and play, anonymous fetishistic and often mundane subjects pose with theatricality heightened by graphic forms and a high-contrast palette. Strangers exist between actions. Each composition appears to take place before or after an event. Restrained scenes reveal a conservative eroticism. Dark humor and absurdity distill queer images. Themes of control, anxiety, and desire embed within each psychological arrangement. Though based on true stories and real people, the following accounts are fictional, designed to contextualize the aforementioned scenarios.

Abstract:
As a dyslexic child, I always had trouble finding my voice. It's hard to express yourself in words, when you struggle with them. For me words always come later when I write. But most people don't understand how I feel. If your synapses fire off at the right time how can you image what it would be like it they didn't? That's where fiction comes in. If you can override someone's lack of experience with the use of a metaphor, then by distancing the reader from reality with an allegory, you can get to truth that's hard to capture any other way. You can also simply tell the truth in your writing with plain nonfiction. For me, fiction and nonfiction are a way for me to claim my voice and convey truth. Only a reader can decided what that truth looks like.

Abstract:

To bring movement into architecture, that eluding fixity into that fixed. The thesis begins here, in paradox, a paradox continuing throughout, in the form of various oppositions -- movement and stasis, the impulsive and the graphic (the graph), measure and disorder (or measured disorder).

The very form of an 'opposition,' and its subtext of mutual exclusion restated as an entwined tension, an impossible one-within-the-other, thought if not realized, oblique if not overt.

To work with flight, architecturally, with the movement of people and objects, departure and arrival, and, as architecture, with enclosure and disclosure.

The experience of air travel, specifically the boundlessness of one's gaze when in flight paired with the aircraft's insularity, interested me initially as a metaphor. To inhabit the infinitude of the sky within a protective vessel, moving through, and suspended within, space, extending the boundaries of the subject.

Each scale -- the scale of expanse, and the human scale of the aircraft -- opposite yet enmeshed, the aircraft physically, sensorially, framing the boundless. Aside from scale, the earlier question of movement, transience, within this expanse.

Transience as flux, flux as that antithetical to architecture's fixing in time, even as time is expressed.

A way to think while working -- to 'think' expanse while working with enclosure, to 'think' the meander while outlining the static.

The struggle between impulse and order, between ordered impulse and harmonic proportion, symmetry and the meander.

Allowing a strange measure, indeed, cultivating this irregular growth, a graphing of impulse, an impulse to graph.

Abstract:

A (plane) curve is called strange if all of its tangent lines pass through a fixed point, called the strange point. We study the $\mathbb{A}^1$-geometry, and moduli spaces of $\mathbb{A}^1$-curves on the complement of a rational strange plane curve $\Delta$ of degree $p$. On the one hand we observe that $\PP^2\setminus \Delta $ is $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected. On the other hand, these $\mathbb{A}^1$-curves can have large obstructions: therefore $\\mathbb{P}^2\setminus \Delta$ is only inseparably $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected. To understand the strange properties of $\mathbb{A}^1$-curves we study the moduli spaces which parameterize them. In each characteristic, we show the moduli spaces of $\mathbb{A}^1$-curves are connected and classify their irreducible components. The key to the above results are deformation of $\mathbb{A}^1$-curves along certain ``logarithmic" foliations. A direct, and very surprising, consequence of the existence of this foliation is that all $\mathbb{A}^1$-curves are strange. Using the above geometry, we construct for each $p$, new and very explicit examples of supercuspidal families of curves. That is, a fibration with smooth total space but {\it every} fiber is singular with a large number of cusps

Terry, Olufemi. "With Strange Aeons." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/10595.

Full text
Abstract:
With Strange Aeons is a contemporary diaspora story of alienation and stark choices. Wome, a quiet Cameroonian university graduate has just moved to New York City from Rhode Island to take up a job. There, he meets Shokare, a combative nonconformist who challenges him to break free of the "African bubble" to which Wome has begun to attach himself. Not wholly persuaded, Wome is nevertheless drawn by Shokare's charisma and eclecticism. Wome's eyes are opened to the energy and possibilities of life in 1990s NewYork and, despite his shyness he becomes involved with a Canadian woman, which further complicates his sense of belonging.

Berry, Emily. "'_____' : Elegy's Ghost ; and, Stranger, Baby." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2017. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/67859/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis comprises a creative and critical exploration of grief, loss and absence in what I call elegiac writing. The critical portion of the thesis, ‘____’: Elegy’s Ghost, marks out the terms of my creative work, by examining how other contemporary writers have addressed these themes and by considering the uses and limitations of ‘elegy’ as a formal category. My particular interest is in writings that embark from a particular loss to explore loss itself as a concept beyond (or alongside) its object and how this manifests in language. In chapter one I lay the groundwork for my study, which goes on to closely focus on elegiac works by three writers, Kristin Prevallet, Anne Carson and Noelle Kocot. This includes an overview of the history and evolution of elegy, looking at both the literary background and the influence of psychoanalytic writings in the genre, in order to position my argument. I maintain, for example, that Freud’s ‘Mourning and Melancholia’ has been profoundly misinterpreted. I argue that contemporary writers exploring grief often use the term ‘elegy’ ambivalently, as evidenced by their engagement with the concept in their work. My term ‘elegiac writing’ seeks to acknowledge this ambivalence in writings which – in keeping with the ‘vexed experience’ of writing about grief – wrestle with both content and form. Chapters two, three and four are each devoted to examining a single elegiac work, considering the different ways loss can be registered in language through, for example, holes, gaps, negation and obscurity. My poetry collection Stranger, Baby, written in conversation with the creative and critical works examined here, is an encounter with my own experience of grief and the process of writing about it. I conclude the critical portion of the thesis by reflexively examining this process and its relationship to my critical research.

Selman, Jennifer M. "Lasting impact : the compassion of strangers." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/63344.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore and understand the lasting impact of compassion from strangers. Eight participants graciously shared their experience of a period of suffering, the unexpected compassion they received from a stranger, and the lasting impact it had on them. Six people participated in a single interview with the researcher and two participants chose to write letters to describe their experience. Each interview was transcribed. An arts-based methodology was used. I approached the study as an a/r/tographer, utilizing poetic inquiry, photography, contemplative spaces and life-writing as ways to explore, describe, and understand the multi-faceted experiences of the participants. The compassion of strangers was unexpected and had a lasting impact on the participants. It broadened their perspectives about strangers, helped build feelings of gratitude, and positively altered their sense of self. Inherent in the eight experiences were threads of suffering, compassion, unexpectedness, interconnectedness, gratitude, and self.

Pikovsky, Arkady, and Ulrike Feudel. "Characterizing strange nonchaotic attractors." Universität Potsdam, 1994. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2007/1340/.

Full text
Abstract:
Strange nonchaotic attractors typically appear in quasiperiodically driven nonlinear systems. Two methods of their characterization are proposed. The first one is based on the bifurcation analysis of the systems, resulting from periodic approximations of the quasiperiodic forcing. Secondly, we propose th characterize their strangeness by calculating a phase sensitivity exponent, that measures the sensitivity with respect to changes of the phase of the external force. It is shown, that phase sensitivity appears if there is a non-zero probability for positive local Lyapunov exponents to occur.

Onishi, Brian Hisao. "Strange Matter, Strange Objects: An Ontological Reorientation of the Philosophical Concept of Wonder." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2016. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc849711/.

Full text
Abstract:
Wonder has had a rich and diverse history in the western philosophical tradition. Both Plato and Aristotle claim that philosophy begins in wonder, while Descartes marks it as the first of the passions and Heidegger uses it as a signpost for a new trajectory of philosophy away from idealism and nihilism. Despite such a rich history, wonder is almost always thought to be exhausted by the acquisition of knowledge. That is, wonder is thought of almost exclusively in epistemological terms and is discarded as soon as knowledge has been achieved. In this dissertation, I argue for an ontological reorientation of wonder that values wonder beyond its epistemic uses. To do this, I read the phenomenological and ontological work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty through recent developments in object-oriented ontology and new materialism. Much of Merleau-Ponty's work is directed toward dissolving the distinction between subject and object. His insights regarding the mutual constitution of the world lead to the possibility of an operative wonder that occurs between subject and object. Both object-oriented ontology and new materialism radicalize these insights by articulating them in terms of a vibrant or quasi-agential material world. Objects and assemblages of objects are capable of performing the becoming of the world that includes human activity, but is not reduced to it. As such, the world is capable of both self-organization and practice. Ultimately I use the philosophy-physics of Karen Barad to argue that operative wonder acts like a kind of superposition of relations between objects, and thereby accounts for a concept of wonder that is both ontologically significant and acutely generative.
