Hannah Arendt is often read as author of the crisis. Being born in the short 20th century, bearing witness and even living herself, while she was among men, many of the catastrophes that had place at the world s stage. As a thinker, she made her systematic meditation over the totalitarian phenomenon the starting point for many works which intention resided on trying to understand the world, and, from this comprehension, to be able to reconcile herself with it. Comprehending the totalitarian regime as a radical novelty, that embarrass our categories of thought, as well as our ability to act in the world and discourse about the human affairs, Arendt ended up approximating this terrible event with another one, which essence itself is the novelty: the Revolution. Understanding the Revolution as a foundation of a Constitution of Freedom and of a New World Order, the author faces the difficult challenge of conciliating things that seem to be completely contradictory in contemporaneity: the capacity of political action to start something entirely new and the necessity to stabilize the public space where action must happen. It is at the intersection of this unresolvable dichotomy that this work intends to explore fundamental concepts of the Arendtian thought, as authority, freedom, action, power, among others. With them I will try to understand the immersion that Arendt do to the depths of the past to give new dignity to the political field, in a time where the humans beings take, each passing day, less responsibility for the world and for the possibilities it reserves.

Full textThe thesis studies the works of English war poet Isaac Rosenberg (1890-1918) with the main aim of analysing the influence of his pictorial training on his poetic production, an aspect which has been generally acknowledged, but scarcely investigated by critics. The first three chapters examine the social, cultural and artistic context in which Rosenberg lived before enlisting in the army; in particular, the focus is on the Jewish community of London’s East End, the involvement in the First World War, and the art scene of the early Twentieth century. The study also considers the art school he attended, the Slade, his limited pictorial production, and his thoughts on aesthetics, as included in the letters and prose. The fourth chapter, core of the thesis, proposes an analysis of the poems which aims to show how Rosenberg exploited his experience as a painter in his writing, especially in the war poetry. Among the identified strategies are the symbolic use of colours, the imagery related to light and shadow, the adoption of a particular perspective, the fusion of abstract and concrete. These techniques are seen as attempts to respond to the difficulty of representing and communicating war experience.

Abstract The fox spirit has the universal image of being tricky and the image of ghost is gloomy and terrifying, no matter in eastern or western culture. However, no one has ever encountered with a fox spirit or a ghost for sure. Then how do the writers describe the things they have never experienced? In Aesop’s Fables, which is a common introductory literature for children, there is an impressive character, the fox, the smart, witty, wicked and tricky animal. The image of fox stays in children’s mind firmly. Listening to ghost stories is one of the favorite exciting experience in childhood. Children are curious about the ghost stories and are at the same time afraid of listening to them because of the fear of overwhelming gloomy darkness. The making of images, like tricky fox spirit and the gloomy ghost, is artificial. If this assumption is true, does every maker think of an identical image? Do Chinese writers agree with foreign writers on the ideas of fox spirit and ghost? Human, who called themselves the lord of all creatures, always makes the judge of good and evil. However, can human be detached when he makes the judgment? Considering from another perspective, if a certain convention is subverted, will the roles meet conflicts? These questions are good research topics. Sung-ling Pu, the writer of Strange Stories from a Chinese studio, provided a total different perspective from the convention. He has subverted the images of fox spirit being tricky, and ghost being gloomy. This subversion carries some implied meanings, which the writer intended to express. In this thesis, the research attempt to give an interpretation which is clear and close to the writer’s intentions through analyzing and generalizing the types, characters, images, themes, and traits of fox spirit and ghost stories in Strange Stories from a Chinese studio.

This thesis provides a theoretical account of the concept of hospitality so as to explore the cultural clash and identity conflict experienced by the immigrant characters with ethnic background in Zadie Smith’s White Teeth. Hospitality is a virtuous social code of providing necessities to unknown strangers, treating them as guests or friends without hostility. However, such a generous mechanism conceals a power structure. To be recognized as a guest is a means of obeying the laws of the host. Hospitality in this sense is conditional. Therefore, the dichotomy of self-other or host-guest is unable to sufficiently welcome strangers but highlights their identities as the foreigners. The thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter One broaches relevant critical accounts of White Teeth along with a brief introduction to the text, discussing the issue of immigration in light of hospitality to consider the problematic encounter between metropolitan indigenes and transnational immigrants. Chapter Two elaborates on the power structure of hospitality discussed by Jacques Derrida. By looking into Smith’s text, treating the immigrants as guests still implies they are not “real” British, which reveals that the white Britons still exercise their power over minorities. Chapter Three keeps following Derrida’s deconstructive viewpoint about the interchangeability of host-guest paradigm, discussing the possibility of making an immigrant guest become a British host. Chapter Four argues that the restricted mode of host-guest paradigm forces immigrants to choose either integration or marginalization—to be a recognized insider or repulsed outsider, violating the unselfish spirit of hospitality. Chapter Five summarizes the above-mentioned aspects, arguing that Smith’s novel is not a naïve celebration of multiculturalism, but an introspective mirror reflecting the inextricable relationship between self and other in a mobile era.
